Why My Fears Are Now Tears Of Happiness!
There are two reasons why my fears are now tears of happiness: Today (January 7, 2025), I will be getting the bandages and stitches removed from the pacemaker surgery on December 30, 2024. Tomorrow (January 8) is my 75th birthday. My previous story outlined the details of the surgery and the difficulties I experienced afterward. Many of my friends and readers sent me words of encouragement…

One other HUGE one (like, the other one in the top three including quit smoking and move more) is QUIT DRINKING ALCOHOL.
I know I know. It's so incredibly normalized that it's almost impossible to imagine, especially certain cultures (I'm staring my province in a mirror, and also looking at you, Ireland and Australia).
Alcohol, smoking, large amounts of meat are some of the highest causes we currently know for cancer and other early deaths. Obesity is another one, but there are also conflicting studies there. "Early death" doesn't just mean you're healthy until you die young, it means you're miserable for years until you die young.
To reiterate OP - these are not moral judgments. They are facts about health and life. And they are just as important for those of us with mobility issues or other conditions and diseases (I'm full of them myself) as they are for currently healthy people.
A lot of younger people have no idea what aging actually looks and feels like, and the reasons behind it. That ignorance is so dangerous. If you don’t want to “be old,” you aren’t talking about a number of years. I have patients in their late 80s who could still handily beat me in a race—one couple still runs marathons together, in their late 80s—and I lost someone who was in her early 60s to COPD last year. What you want is not youth, it is health.
If you want to still be able to enjoy doing things in your 60s and 70s and 80s and even 90s, what you want to do, right now, is quit smoking, get some activity on a regular basis (a couple of walks a week is WAY better for you than nothing; increasing from 1 hour a day of cardio to 1.5 will buy you very little), and eat some plants. That’s it. No magic to it. No secret weird tricks. Don’t poison yourself, move around so your body doesn’t forget how, and eat plants.
If you have trouble moving around now because of mobility limitations, bad news: you still need to move around, not because it’s immoral not to, but because that’s still the best advice we have. I highly recommend looking up the Sit and Be Fit series; it is freely available and has exercises that can be done in a chair, which are suitable for people with limited mobility or poor balance. POTS sufferers, I’m looking at you.
If you have trouble eating plants because of dietary issues (they cause gas, etc.) or just because they’re bitter (super taster with texture issues here!), bad news. You still want to find a way to get some plants into your body on a regular basis. I know. It sucks. The only way I can do it is restaurants—they can make salads taste like food. I can also tolerate some bagged salads. On bad weeks, the OCD with contamination focus gets so bad I just can’t. However, canned beans always seem “safe,” and they taste a bit like candy, so they’re a good fallback.
If you smoke and you have tried quitting a million times and you’re just not ready to, bad news. You still need to quit. Your body needs you to try and keep trying. Your brain needs it, too. Damaging small blood vessels racks up cumulative damage over time that your body can start trying to reverse as soon as you quit. I know it’s insanely, absurdly addictive. You still need to.
You cannot rules lawyer your way past your body’s basic needs. It needs food, sleep, activity, and the absence of poison. Those are both small things and big asks. You cannot sustain a routine based on punishment, so don’t punish your body. Find ways to include these things that are enjoyable and rewarding instead. Experiment. There is no reason not to experiment—you don’t have to know instantly what’s going to work for you and what won’t, you just need to be willing to try things and make changes when things aren’t working for you.
You will still age. Your body will stop making collagen and elastin. Tissues you can see and tissues you can’t see will both sag. Cushioning tissues under your skin will get thinner. You’ll bruise more easily. Skin will tear more easily. Accumulated sun damage will start to show more and more. Joints will begin to show arthritis. Tendons and ligaments will get weaker and get injured more easily, as will muscles. Bones will lose mass and get easier to break. You’ll get tired more easily.
But you know what makes the difference between being dead, or as good as, in your 60s vs your 90s? Activity, plants, and quitting smoking. And don’t do meth. Saw a 58-year-old guy this week who is going to have a heart attack if he doesn’t quit whatever stimulant he’s on. I pretended to believe it was just the cigarettes, and maybe it is, but meth and cocaine will kill you quicker. Stop poisoning yourself.
Baby steps; take it one step at a time; you don’t need to have everything figured out right now. But you do need to be working on figuring things out.
#when i was in the hospital i shared a room with a 64 year old woman with COPD and bronchitis#she was supposed to be quitting smoking#had a patch on#woke up every single night multiple times coughing her lungs out#she was overweight and barely moved the 3 days she was in the room with me#other than to go downstairs and have a smoke#and she couldn't wait to get home to have a drink with her husband#the second woman who came in and took her place was also 64#same name too#she had just had a pacemaker installed#she was average weight#didn't smoke or drink#and went for a walk multiple times a day#she had no idea she had a heart condition#she actually ran to her doctor's appointment the day she had her surgery#because it was time for her daily run!#so she ran#he looked at her like she was crazy and wondered how the heck she was standing let alone running#she had her pacemaker installed that night#i met her the next day#they were the same age#same part of the world#very different lifestyles#and very different expected outcomes

Pacemaker surgery is like a special fix for heart problems when it doesn't beat right. It's a surgery where doctors carefully put a small but strong device called a pacemaker into the chest. This device helps keep the heart on track by sending tiny electric signals to make it beat steadily. It's helpful for people with slow heartbeats, known as bradycardia.

Feeling this extra right now because my body reminded me I am doomed to need surgery every three or four years for the rest of forever 🙃
(If someone could please invent wireless charging for Enterra devices, that would be sexy as hell)
That chronic illness feeling where you don't want to die soon, but the idea of spending another 60 or so years in this body makes you want to scream.
#the wait time between “oh your battery is dying ” to “here's surgery to put in a new battery so you can eat” is 3 or 4 months in nausea jail#whose dick do i have to suck [and probably vomit on] to get a way to charge this thing???#enterra implant#gastric stimulator#gastric pacemaker#chronic illness#gastroparesis

What I Wanted You To Know!
It is 3:18 AM on December 28, 2024, and I woke up feeling uneasy a few minutes ago. It’s kind of like feeling guilty for something you did before you did anything. In July 2009, when I was diagnosed with stage 3 throat/tongue cancer and only given a 40% chance of survival, I was 59 years old. I don’t believe in praying, but I desperately wanted to survive until my 60th Birthday on January 8,…

A Health Update
Last year, around about this time, I began having difficulty with my stamina. After numerous tests, it became obvious I was struggling with Bradycardia (slow heart rhythm). I wore a Holter monitor for a week and on one night my heart rate dropped to 26 bpm. I could barely walk from the bedroom to the kitchen without getting winded, tired, and feeling a strong urge to just sit or lay down. After…
