The propensity for duality in China may elude Westerners, simply to put, duality is the dual juxtaposition in a pair. Different from the notion of trinity, duality is starred in the design with a singular focus: spreading the gospel of harmonies in a very Chinese manner.

The designer gives his explanation on the concept of his design, which is grounded on a strong form of externalisation of traditional Chinese philosophies: individuals being manifesting their humblest demeanor in an effort to show reverence to the Mother Nature and reach the oneness with the nature. That’s why the elements of nature is literally everywhere in the space.

The consistency of neutral tones flows throughout the main level. The kitchen focuses more on the elegance of the ambient conditions whereby there are fewer distractions from savouring every mouthful of cuisines with preoccupied relish.

The staircase is more like a vertical meandering sculpture leading upwards to the privacy of the dwellers.

The sculpture, Coupling, by PoLin Yang The sculpture receives the bulk of the effort that was put into the enhancement of ‘coupling’. Created by a figurative artist, PoLin Yang, the silhouette of it stays true to the intimacy and interdependence of dual elements. T.K. Chu wants to modernise the space through the agent of indescribable abstraction principally because its sophistication and complexity is a gateway to evoking the emotions.

A whiskey bar is a fixture in the boutique hotel thereby to showcase the dwellers’ high air.

The liveliness thrives in the space so that it allows dwellers to unwind.

Horology as Functional Art with Sandro Fratini Hotel L’orologio

They say a watch is used only for telling time. Well, tell that to billionaire businessman, Sandro Fratini, a self made billionaire, founder of Rifle Jeans and owner of Whythebest hotels. Sandro, got his first luxury watch, a Longines, for his first communion at the age of 8. Since then he has collected more than 3,000 pieces over his 60 years of watch collecting.

Today, Sandro has more than 2000 “important” watches featuring all major watch brands. He developed a theme of hotels centered around his passion for watches and breathtaking watch collection.

PASSION FOR TIME

We toured his hotel in Florence, Hotel L’Orologio, the first hotel of its kind, based solely on watches. If you are a fan of Vacheron Constantin, Rolex, or Patek Philipe, staying at this hotel is a must; however, if you are not a watch lover, you should stay anyway as to be here is like staying in a museum of watches.     Each floor has been dedicated to a watch brand and the rooms have been named after the corresponding watch modelsof that brand. The hallways are decorated with images from Dr Fratini’s most rare pieces, such as the Patek Philippe Round Button.

In the lobby and common areas, you will see interesting features such as the Rolex links as mirrors.  A Rolex sign acquired from a Swiss train station from the 1940s. You will also see busts of Patek and Philippe, Hermes scarfs based on Rolex watches, pictures of famous people including Martin Luther King, JR wearing a Presidential Rolex, Paul Newman wearing his Paul Newman Rolex Daytona, President JFK wearing an IWC, and more.

He commissioned craftsmen to make bathroom taps and bidet knobs based on the Rolex designed crown. The Mercedes emblem which stands for the rising stars on many public door handles. In ciomo, one hour of the world, a representation of a sundial on the floor to the bar with a zodiacal map and analema. No detail has been spared on this property.

AUTHENTICITY

Sandro feels authenticity and provenance are real concerns in today’s market especially in vintage. In the beginning, he purchased from people he could trust and trusted watchmakers. Over time, he was able to take more risks because he had seen so many over his tenure as a collector. I guess you have to kiss a lot of frogs :) In today’s world, confidence in a watch investment is codified by the presentation of box and papers. Of Sandro’s watches, only 100 have papers. I asked if he’s concerned… he says…”I am the papers / the authority.”  This is true. He is so special that Patek, Rolex, Cartier other major brands call him and request him loan one of his rare pieces because, in some cases, he is the only person in the world who has the watch. When asked what’s missing in today’s market for people lacking his level of expertise, he said “an authority providing trust and security, e.g., Provenance, such as what WatchFacts is doing.”

FUNCTIONAL ART

A watch is the only functional piece of art that says something about its owner. You can’t drive your car into a meeting. People don’t know where you live or what designer clothes you are wearing. A watch however, will make the statement that you belong at the table. It’s your official invitation.  What you wear and how you wear it makes all the difference.  Take the following pieces in his collection as an example:

Patek Philippe reference 2523 "World Time”

Launched in 1953, the 2523 reference comprises the two-crown system that replaced the former reference 1415, a single crown model with its bezel engraved with cities to be switched manually. With a case size of 35.5 mm, very large for the time, the watch is fitted with superb faceted lugs that are among Patek’s best ever produced.  The dial features 41 cities and is estimated worth between $2.5MM to $3MM based on recent auction sales.

Patek Philippe King Farouk, reference 159318

Patek made only 54 made of these amazing pieces. Sandro has his placed at the top floor representing what one might think is the crescendo of all his pieces, but not really. The most recent auction price of $1 millon places this watch in top 5% of Patek Philippe timepieces. The cloisonné enamel dial depicts Egypt and Sudan, the Nile river, parts of the Mediterranean and the Red Sea, the capitals Cairo and Khartoum marked by applied diamonds, the applied Royal Crown of Egypt. The reference 1518 1593 was unveiled in the 1940s1 and was the first perpetual calendar chronograph ever produced in series. Only 281 examples were produced over the watch's 14-year life. This stainless 1518 dates to 1945 and was formerly owned by King Farouk of Egypt.  Latest auction value is over $11MM at Phillips in Association with Bacs & Russo!!!

The Patek Round Button reference # 1463J

Circa 1960s is a highly sought after chronograph that came with a white face. Sandro, however, has the ONLY Patek Philppe 1463J with a black face. Priceless. Not even a Sheik in Dubai can get this watch. Who can top that! His holy grail!

Sandro also has L’Oroggio branded watches, L’O.  In fact, he actually designed two different watches available for sale only at Hotel L’Orologio in Florence. One which is a goof / joke, but is available for hotel guests; however, the more serious watch was inspired by the Patek Phillipe Enamel America, referenced 2523, as seen above, acknowledging his hotel would cater to visitors from all over the world.  The base version only has 190 editions. The more limited edition, of which 10 were produced comes with a hand painted dial by a local Florentine artist. Encased in stainless steel with PVD coating, only 4 unique hand painted dials were created.

 I loved the watch so much, I purchased one…The Double Dragon, as seen below.

AS AN INVESTMENT

People look to art, e.g., Monet, Picasso, Rothko, Kandinsky and others as investments noting the beauty and rarity of the artist’s work. Watches are in a similar class. Both are hidden asset classes with value determined by the secondary market. They exist in a world where provenace is everything, are easily transportable from place to place and can become extremely valuable. A example is the Henry Graves Patek, which was recently auctioned for over $11 million. The King Farouk, Round Button, Cartier Reverso, and others were not purchased by Sandro for investment purposes, in fact, they were sought after and acquired because of their rarity and complexity. He views watches as art, which is completely logical given the scarcity and beauty of his gems. His collection has grown significantly in value and because some of the pieces there is no real valuation says the billionaire.

ADVICE TO THE COLLECTOR

Buy what you love as the market will come and determine what is valuable vs what is not. Enjoy the watch. I welcome this advice coming from one of the most respected watch collectors of my generation.
