How Chanel Became Synonymous with Handbags

Founded in 1909, French fashion house Chanel, led by the now-iconic Gabrielle, known as Coco, Chanel, was focused on designing women’s clothing and accessories that were stylish, elegant and ready to wear. 

Their simplicity, chic sense of style and use of comfortable fabrics made the clothing lines instantly popular, and by the late 1920s, the Chanel clutch bag had taken shape. The popularity of the clutch bag is a testament to 2 features of the time period – the minimalist styling and the fact that women didn’t regularly leave the house all that often, meaning that larger bags were unnecessary.

Although the Chanel fashion house had been designing bags and other accessories for over 45 years, they didn’t make their most famous contribution to the industry until February 1955, when they added a few extra details that their competitors were lacking – most notably, the women’s shoulder bag. 

This simple addition to the design revolutionised the lives of the ladies who used them – it was the very first time they had been able to keep their belongings safe and keep their hands free. The other added details included the slim leather strap that was woven through the links of the metal chain in the shoulder strap, a deep burgundy interior, in tribute to Chanel’s childhood, a slim pocket at the back to hold cash and a centre compartment exactly the right size and shape to hold the most important ladies’ accessory of the day – a lipstick.

The 2.55, named after the date of its creation, was an instant hit for its style and its convenience. With the diamond-padded outer, mimicking the jackets men wore to the races at the time, and its sleek, metallic embellishments, the 2.55 was an instant fashion icon and is arguably one of the most famous handbags ever created.

It is also iconic as a sign of its times. Women’s liberation was becoming more prominent across Europe. Women were taking jobs and spending more and more time outside of the home, but they also still had societal pressure to look good and to provide whatever a man or child may need, placed upon them. Accessories like this, which helped them along their newly won freedom, were treasured.

 Today, Chanel’s range of bags is world famous, and encompasses everything from the original clutch design right through to things like make up bags, luggage, camera cases and backpacks. They have also diversified their range of materials considerably, from the original calf skin to things like denim, PVC, velvet and even wood. 

Many things about the company and the world it inhabits may have changed over the years, but Chanel is still a brand that is synonymous with quality, luxury, opulence. Their contribution to the design will ensure that the name of the company will always be tied to the handbag.
