Remove the overflow and the plug. The overflow usually consists of a plate with one or two screws, to which a lever with stopper is attached. Once the plate is unscrewed and removed, use your fingers to pull the lever hook off the linkage rod. Next, release the stopper from the drain by unscrewing or pulling it out, depending on the type.

Remove the drain flange using a special drain flange removal tool or insert a pair of needle nose pliers into the drain flange, turn it counterclockwise and pull it out. If it's a freestanding tub, gather your strong friends: you may be able to lift the tub out of the drain pipe at this point. For built-in tubs - or if the drain flange of a freestanding tub is stuck - proceed to the next step.

STEP 4

Loosen the drain pipe. For a freestanding tub, reach under the drain pipe and cut it close to the bottom of the tub with a reciprocating saw equipped with a metal blade. For built-in tubs, you will need to gain access from below, through a basement or crawl space, to remove the drain pipe. Use a pipe wrench or water pump pliers to grab and loosen the pipe at a connection. If the connections are made of bonded PVC, cut the pipe with a reciprocating saw.

STEP 5

Cut away a horizontal strip of the wall about six inches above the bathtub to expose the tub flange, and remove any screws that secure the flange to the wall studs. You can use a reciprocating saw to cut the wall plates, but be careful not to cut through the studs or any mechanical items such as wires or pipes that may be in the stud spaces. If the wall is tiled, use a grinder with a diamond wheel to cut a horizontal grout line, then use a chisel to loosen the individual tiles underneath.
