Far away in the land of Sylvania, some woodland creatures have gathered to celebrate Pride. There’s a cross-dressing fox, a PVC-clad boar, a rabbit in full drag on a float. Rainbow flags and bunting abound. But just out of sight, perched above an ice-cream kiosk, are three sinister little figures in black face masks. They could be hedgehogs. They could be squirrels. One of them has a machine gun.
Isis in Sylvania was the work of the satirist Miriam Elia, a set of tableaux which was meant to be shown at the Passion for Freedom art exhibition at the Mall Galleries in London in 2015. The pieces were withdrawn after police said they might cause offence. That the gallery capitulated so easily would suggest that its self-declared “passion for freedom” was limited.
Elia’s display brilliantly lampooned our infantile response to the growing threat of Islamic terrorism, and it seems more relevant today than ever. After the police had sent emails to the gallery declaring that Isis in Sylvania was “not art” and that “all mentions of it should be removed from the promotional materials, social media etc”, Elia responded:
“The decision to censor shows that our establishment is more threatened by satire, clarity and truth than by young men willing to kill, rape and pillage in the name of Islam. Apparently my images were ‘potentially inflammatory’ to terrorists. This is the equivalent of saying an anti-Nazi cartoon in the late 1930s was offensive… to Nazis. Those who justify and protect barbaric totalitarianism, in whichever form, are on the fast track to becoming totalitarian themselves.”
The reaction of the police, of course, exemplified the very problem that Elia had been satirising in the first place.
It should be clear to everyone by now that kowtowing to the wishes of terrorists only encourages them. Last week Lindsay Hoyle, speaker of the House of Commons, was pressurised into overriding parliamentary convention because of an apparent risk to security. He spoke of “absolutely frightening” threats directed at MPs because of their reluctance to call for a ceasefire in Gaza. He also alluded to the murder of MP David Amess by an ISIS sympathiser. “I never want to go through a situation where I find a friend from any side has been murdered,” he said, “I also don’t want another attack on this House.” The word “Islamist” was not mentioned, as though not talking about the problem might make it disappear.
Hoyle is correct that the threat of violence is very real. Nobody would seek to downplay the murder of David Amess at his constituency surgery in Essex in 2021, or the beheading of schoolteacher Samuel Paty in Paris in 2020, or the massacre at the offices of satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo in 2015. But our tendency to forget these atrocities, and move on as if nothing has happened, is chilling. Many of our politicians are too afraid to address the issues out of fear of being branded “islamophobic”, an absurd neologism often deployed to conflate anti-Muslim hatred with legitimate criticism of Islam.
How much reflection was there after the Manchester Arena bombing in May 2017 in which children and teenagers were slain? After the killing of Amess there was endless discussion in parliament about how we needed to crack down on social media, as though the radical Islamist responsible was motivated by online trolling rather than the creed of a medieval death-cult. We are like the woodland animals in another of Elia’s scenes, blissfully enjoying a picnic while armed and masked assailants appear on the horizon.

[ Credit: Miriam Elia ]
So while I have sympathy for Hoyle’s very human reaction to the spectre of violence, it is clear that the failure of politicians to accurately diagnose the problem is only making matters worse. Those few brave individuals who are prepared to speak out are putting themselves in danger. But with a collective effort the risk could be spread and at least become tolerable. After the Charlie Hebdo atrocity, media outlets refused to show the offending cartoons of the Prophet Mohammed, but if all of them had done so simultaneously, the threat could have been diluted.
If the speaker of the House of Commons is prepared to modify parliamentary procedures due to threats from far-left cranks and radical islamists, where does this leave our democracy? It is hardly surprising that increasingly we are seeing commentators claiming that the values of liberalism cannot be sustained against this particular brand of authoritarianism. They suggest that liberals are too weak to tackle those who do not share their commitment to individual freedom.
It is true that too often exemptions have been made out of fear of causing offence to religious minorities. Police in the north of England failed to enforce the law against predominately Pakistani grooming gangs for fear of being branded “racist”. The inquiry into the Manchester Arena bombing found that security guards held back from intercepting the killer for similar reasons. Sharia courts have been operating in the United Kingdom for decades and, although their rulings have no legal standing, they do hold authority within Muslim communities. And we have seen how police have overlooked some of the worst behaviour at the now regular pro-Palestine marches in London.
But this is not a weakness at the heart of liberalism; it is the failure to properly follow its principles. All branches of liberal thought – from the conservative liberalism of Friedrich Hayek to the social liberalism of John Rawls – share an understanding that the rule of law is paramount. Individual autonomy cannot be preserved if the state is unable to maintain the peace and impartially resolve the natural conflicts of human existence.
A well-intentioned commitment to multiculturalism has enabled parallel societies to flourish within the United Kingdom. In turn, this has granted authority to the most reactionary elements within religious communities. Sharia law may be an ambition for ultra-conservative theocrats, but many female and gay Muslims will not find it such an appealing prospect. We need to stop appeasing these minorities within minorities, small groups of extremists that by no means represent the average British Muslim. And this means that our parliamentarians must retain their courage, even in the face of violent threats.
More than anything, we need to be able to talk about this crisis with honesty and candour. However comforting it might be in the short term, our political class cannot go on living in their Sylvanian fantasy, wilfully oblivious to the masked elephant in the room. This denialism is a form of procrastination, putting off the inevitable for another day. The values of our liberal democracy and our hard-won rights are under threat. It’s time to grow up.
A limited edition book of all the images in Miriam Elia’s “Isis in Sylvania” series is available to buy here. A signed limited edition print of the picnic scene is available here.

Exploring Different Types of Exterior Doors

The best types of doors for residential exterior doors should be chosen based on security and durability. The top materials for exterior doors are fiberglass, wood, and steel, and when choosing an exterior door make recommendations considering all the factors including budget, climate, aesthetic preferences, and more. Here are different types of exterior doors to choose from.
Fiberglass doors:
The fiberglass doors are very durable, energy-efficient, and low-maintenance. They are available on a low budget and are also easy to install. Fiberglass doors have a very smooth finish and have a wood-like look. Many people like fiberglass doors because they can be created in different styles.
Steel Doors:
Steel doors are very secure options and great for installing as front doors, or garage doors to prevent theft and burglary. They are durable for years and generally don’t need replacement. Steel doors are a safe and durable option. But to make it last longer repainting and adding an anti-rust coat frequently is advised.
Wood-clad Doors:
Wood-clad doors are a combination of wood and other materials for increased stability and strength. The wood-clad doors generally have an interior of wood with sturdier material in the exterior. Wood-clad doors are best for traditional as well as minimal aesthetic designs with increased durability. You can check out or browse different designs of traditional as well as wood-clad exterior doors at Beaumart in London, Ontario.
PVC or Vinyl Doors:
PVC or vinyl doors are low-maintenance, resistant to moisture, and provide good insulation. They are commonly used for sliding and patio doors. However, they may not offer the same level of security as steel or fiberglass doors. But it is an affordable option for quick fixes.
Mixed Material Doors:
It is probably one of the best materials for installing a front door, and back door, and hence it’s made with a mix of materials that brings the best of all the components. Fiberglass doors with metal coating are a great example of a cheap yet resistant option for exterior doors.
Conclusion
In the process of going through different types of exterior doors, consider factors like insulation value (R-value), energy efficiency, security features, maintenance requirements, and the local climate. Additionally, consider the architectural style of your home and your personal design preferences to ensure that the door complements your overall exterior aesthetic. It's also a good idea to consult with a professional or a specialist to help you make the best choice for your specific needs and budget.

#1yrago Company behind the Grenfell Tower fire says it could have been put out with a simple fire extinguisher

It's been a year and a half since London's Grenfell Tower burned and at least 72 people died.
The fire's deadliness was attributed to a combination to a combination of bad advice once the fire broke out and renovations to the building to sheathe it in Reynobond aluminum composite cladding from Arconic, a measure that was taken to make the building more attractive to people in nearby luxury towers.
Now, Arconic's lawyer has told a Parliamentary committee that the panels were not to blame: he says the fire was so deadly because the building had been renovated with PVC windows, synthetic insulation, and different decorative panels used elsewhere in the building.
He claimed that "a simple fire extinguisher in his hands would have made a big difference to the outcome."

LET IT BURN: YEARS & YEARS
With Years & Years’ second album ‘Palo Santo’, Olly Alexander is smouldering away all negative energy and shaping communities from the dancefloor.
By El Hunt on 27th April 2018
Years & Years’ ringleader Olly Alexander - clad in a magnificent pair of PVC overalls; his second costume change of the day - is currently milling around an East London photo studio, thoughtfully munching on cookies, and discussing Mariah Carey in great detail. The megastar pop icon has hit the news this same week after speaking publicly about her bipolar disorder diagnosis for the first time, and Olly’s quick to commend her bravery in letting down her barriers. “I think it would be nice to believe that pop stars and famous people are just incredibly happy and fabulous; that they move glitteringly through the world, and that everything they touch turns gold,” he reasons. “But it’s a fantasy. Actually, I think vulnerability - and being able to be vulnerable - is a sign of real strength.”
You sense that Olly Alexander lives by these same words as he navigates the landscape of being a pop star in 2018. In the three years following Years & Years’ rapid rise to the highest echelons of the charts, Olly has gradually morphed into something of a public figure, too. A prominent spokesperson on mental health and LGBT activism in particular, Olly dedicated the band’s landmark Glastonbury show in 2016 - which took place roughly a year on from the release of their debut album ‘Communion’ - to pride, promising to “shove a rainbow in fear’s face” in an emotional speech to the assembled crowds. A year later, Olly took a camera crew back to his unassuming hometown for a moving BBC documentary titled ‘Growing Up Gay’, and was very honest in discussing his experiences with bullying, eating disorders, and anxiety. ‘Palo Santo’ - Years & Years’ second album - is a continuation of this, combining ridiculously overblown, brilliantly lavish sci-fi landscapes and gigantic pop ambition with an amped-up sense of honesty, and a space-reclaiming edge that defies the presence of negative energy. Today, Olly observes that one of his chief goals as an artist is to write the songs that would’ve lifted him up as a teenager still searching for a community.
After spending several years moving around the country living next to a variety of theme parks - the singer was born in Blackpool, where he lived next door to the Pleasure Beach, before moving down the road from both Alton Towers and Staffordshire’s Drayton Manor - Olly Alexander and his mum settled into rural Gloucestershire life when he was thirteen. Trading in the garish Blackpool illuminations for the distant glimmer of the Severn Bridge, it was a drastic change in pace .“It always gets described as sleepy, Coleford,” Olly grins, having swapped his neon-orange PVC vest and chain necklace (another of today’s outfits) for something a little more practical. Up until it became the hometown of Years & Years’ frontman, the small market town boasted a ukulele expert as one of its most famous residents, and was perhaps best known for being the location of the world’s only Ribena production plant. It wasn’t exactly the epicentre of queer culture for a teenager searching for a community, especially given that the nearest gay bar - Flamingos - was thirty miles away in Bristol, and located the other side of a toll bridge.
“I was actually too scared to go to Flamingos,” Olly remembers, laughing. “I love that as a name for a gay bar. Flamingos!” he announces, with grand intonation. ”[Coleford] was never a place that felt connected to anything queer when I was growing up.”
“I did like growing up around trees and fields, pretending I was a fairy,” he adds, chirpily. “I enjoyed getting that experience.”
“Being able to be vulnerable is a sign of real strength.”
Rather than heading to the now-closed Flamingos (R.I.P), Olly surrounded himself with a sea of pop bangers growing up instead, worshipping at the altar of Christina, Britney and TLC. And speaking of worship, he also remembers taking notice of another prominent community in the town: the church next door to his house. Though organised religion wasn’t his bag, the strange rituals - decorating an orange for Christingle, reciting the Lord’s Prayer at his local Church of England primary school - proved intriguing. Later in life, he’d grow to view songwriting as a cathartic and mysterious kind of healing ritual, as well as noticing odd parallels between a church’s sense of belonging, and the celebratory freedom that exists in a space filled with dancing, thrashing bodies, and filthy, sexy pop.
As Years & Years were starting to etch out the first strokes of ‘Palo Santo’ at the beginning of last year, Olly explains he was newly single”, and reading a lot of books in his spare time. Besides taking on the mammoth task of conquering David Foster Wallace’s Infinite Jest, he also picked up Andrew Holleran’s cult novel Dancer From the Dance; set amongst New York City’s LGBT disco scene in the 1970’s. As well as being flamboyant and fun - presenting a campy, fabulous surface world that’s soundtracked by The Marvelettes and Sister Sledge - it’s also a heartbreaking read, documenting the “psycho-sexual drama” of desire, and touching on both loneliness and immense inequality. It’s a double-edged sword that also exists in ‘Palo Santo’.
“It talks a lot about how the club is like a church; a church for gay people to go and dance, and I was like, yes!” Olly says, excitedly. “This is putting into words how I’ve been feeling for so long, and what I’ve been trying to communicate in music. It really inspired me to write a lot,” he says. One song on ‘Palo Santo’ directly credits the book as an influence. ‘I breathe the rituals of the dancer’s dance,’ Olly sings on ‘Sanctify’.
“When I see dancers, their body is their medium,” Olly notes. “The art is their body. What an amazing embodiment of creativity, to literally be your limbs and your expression and movement! I’ve always been enchanted by dance,” he says. “Plus, I think a pop video should have dance in it, too. It’s a prerequisite! A bit of choreography! You want that fantasy moment where everybody’s going to burst into dance. Some choreo! I just think, if you can’t do that in a pop video, where can you?”
Such considerations rule on ‘Palo Santo’, an album that pushes every last bold facet of pop to the maximum extreme. Set in a high-concept, futuristic world which plays on traces of real life to sneaky, allegorical effect, it also sees Years & Years more fearless than ever. One pulsing highlight, ‘Hallelujah’ dives straight onto the dancefloor to find healing in letting loose, while Olly’s current favourite ‘Lucky Escape’ confronts the more unlikeable aspects of our own emotions. “It’s such a petty song!” he reasons. “I was quite sick when I recorded the vocal for it, and I can really hear when I listen to the song that I’m not feeling very well. I don’t like the person that’s saying those words in a way, but it’s an honest reflection of what I was feeling at the time. I’m proud to put that on there.”
“I’ve always been enchanted by dance.”
Over the past three years, Olly says, he has started to realise that pushing his own boundaries reaps creative rewards. “Putting yourself in an uncomfortable position - in terms of the creative process - it usually means you’re going to get something worthwhile,” he adds. “I really had to get past the levels of pettiness…. sometimes it made me laugh. I’d be writing a song when I was so angry at my ex boyfriend. I would never want to present this to the world, where I’m just this bitter ex who’s still hung up on him!’ Olly admits. “[But] actually, sometimes we are hung up! It’s an ugly, but also truthful and beautiful, side to our humanity. I had to be okay with it.”
Another standout track called ‘Rendezvous’, meanwhile, contains hints of Jennifer Lopez’s euro-banger ‘On the Floor’ (“it does!” Olly exclaims in agreement) and explores hook-up culture, along with unpacking his immediate feelings as a relationship draws to a close. “After a relationship you think, maybe the things they did weren’t as well intentioned as I thought they were?” Olly says. “I was in my petty, angry phase. I have had a lot of experiences with guys where the sex has felt like this depressing inevitability. We’re gonna meet up, and we’re going to have sex. That’ll kind of be it, and then onto the next person. What’s happening in that interaction, and what happens in that interaction when it’s someone you want more from?” he asks, pausing. “I also just really wanted to write a song called ‘Rendezvous’!” he adds. “I think I’d smoked a really big joint before I wrote that song, so there’s that, too. Beyonce would have a song called ‘Rendezvous’ and she’d kill it! She has ‘Deja Vu’, of course. Britney loves a French moment, too. With stuff like that, you just need conviction.”
Conviction is a world that springs to mind easily when you’re talking to Olly Alexander. As well as his commitment to sharing his own experiences with unwavering honesty, this new era of the group feels like a step onwards from the anonymous throngs of bodies that once grabbed at Olly way back when the band released their video for ‘King’. Performing solo gyrating routines for a panel of extra-terrestrial judges as Years & Years returned with ‘Sanctify’ - a bit like a filthier Strictly Come Dancing if it were set in an alternate universe - it’s the very definition of conviction. And with his bandmates Emre Turkmen and Mikey Goldsworthy also taking on a slightly different role this time around - acting as behind the scenes production wizards and, as Olly puts it, “his musical husbands” - there’s a sense that he’s also careful when it comes to handling his newfound platform responsibly.
“What is the point of a pop star in 2018? What should they be saying?”
“What is the point of a pop star in 2018?” Olly asks nobody in particular. “What should they be saying?”
Heading into ‘Palo Santo’ with the aim of creating a record that tackles the intricacies of belonging in a world that feels increasingly dangerous and fragmented, the band crafted an entire fictional landscape to explore the darker grit. “It felt too monumental, hard or depressing to set everything in our real world,” he reasons. “I thought a lot about where I could make a place where we take out all the rules surrounding gender identity and sexuality. I thought, well, why don’t we just have everybody be androids?” Olly laughs.
“I’ve always loved artists that take people to their mad world with them, like Bowie, Prince, Gaga. I thought, I want to do something like that, and go as big as possible,” he concludes with resolve.
In ‘Palo Santo’, Years & Years have done just that, flinging open the doors on a vastly ambitious universe that ignites life’s bullshit in a blaze of euphoria. Infiltrating the mainstream with dagger-edged pop - and doing it in fantastical, glittering style - Olly Alexander might just be the most important pop star we have in 2018.

Ten purple projects that range from deep violet to light lilac
From a playful furniture collection to a collapsible dress, we've rounded up 10 of the best purple projects from Dezeen's archive that recall Pantone's latest colour of the year.
Last week, colour company Pantone named Very Peri as its colour of the year for 2022. Made from a combination of violet-red undertones and shades of blue, the colour sits somewhere within the purple spectrum. However, the colour company is describing it as a "periwinkle blue".
Purple is historically connected with royalty and creativity and its use in architecture and design often reflects these connotations.
"The colour is still routinely associated with royalty, extravagance, wealth and power," wrote Michelle Ogundehin in an opinion piece on Dezeen.
"It was the colour of the elite. A portent of vanity, greed and pride," she added.
Read on for a selection of projects that make the most of this versatile colour:

Further key findings from the report suggest
The key function of cladding systems is to reduce the need to modify the indoor environment in the building as little as possible in response to the environmental load from the outdoor climate.
Recently, The Building Products (Safety) Act 2017 (BPA) was passed by New South Wales Government to regulate building products that are unsafe or could be deemed a safety risk. The catalyst for the BPA was the well-known Lacrosse fire in Melbourne in 2014, the Grenfell fire in London in June 2017 and most recent one in the Neo Apartments in Melbourne, which all involved combustible external cladding. Buildings with combustible external cladding now require registration with the NSW Government. External combustible cladding comprises of metal composite panels, including aluminum, zinc and copper, that is applied to any of the building’s external walls or to any other external area of the building
Bricks are commonly used as a cladding material due to its properties such as high durability on well-designed footings, non-toxicity, recycling ability into new bricks (cradle to cradle) or crushes for fill. Is has the lowest maintenance if unpainted and not rendered
Also, vinyl cladding (polyvinyl chloride (PVC)), is available in a range of profiles, colors, textures and low or no maintenance finishes. Usually it is not regarded to be an environmentally preferred application. It has high embodied energy and emits toxins during manufacture and life cycle use, including end of life disposal. Advances are being made with PVC recycling but current recycling rates remain low due to cost and complexity.

The White Princess Diaries- Ep 2

This is how the Yorks do York!!
The White Princess –Episode 2 but feels as if it should be Episode 14…
And he’s still not in it – even as a ghost…
Good news TWP diary readers!
This one will be a lot shorter!
Partly because I got bored half way through and decided to find out how long it took my colour-changing kettle boil water. Honestly!
BUT – I had been told my most favourite guy (next to Aneurard) would be making a star appearance – which was very magnanimous of him as he never appeared anywhere in TWQ (at least not in the Starz version eh diary readers…he! he! he!)
So – I girded my loins, poured a very tall drink, and began:
Warning! Social media revelation!
Remember that little craze about the ‘is the dress black and blue or blue and gold?’ I bet you didn’t know it was a Tudor invention. Mini-Lizzie-ish wears one gown throughout the whole of this episode, despite getting rounder with a big- but big- but definitely a bit bigger baby. I was so relieved to see that the Battle of Bosworth made very little change on the budget for women’s clothing (apart from a significant reduction in the size of Cecily’s hat collection and the fact that Henry now seems to be clad in the finest carpet)
Going back to said gown (yes we are) What is interesting ( to me anyway) is that the top of the gown was blue (I think) and the bottom of the gown was gold ( I think) and to me it seemed in danger of merging totally into one colour as she got bigger.
Or – it could have been a cleverly crafted represented her transition from the House of York to the Bungalow of Tudor – so she sort of became a Yudor - not to be confused with Yoda! (Jedi is she? In the wrong production she is).
That’s that lot off my chest, so here we go, *strains of all too familiar music are heard ..*
Well – King Whoenry appears to be wearing a smoking jacket (pity its not blazing) and Mini-ish Lizzie s in said confused about its identity dress. (apparently now available to buy £40 should do it). All to show you that he now really fancies the bloomers off her and she is playing all hard to get (see that attitude disappear by episode three…) #spoileralert?
Oh for George of Clarence’s sake – now we have the Battle of Bosworth being reenacted in a bird cage. Honestly! It’s a bird cage! ‘How cheep’ I hear you say! And you would be right to twitter! I think they made it out of all the spare wood from the trees they hauled into Bruges – er I mean – Westminster –when Eddie had that marvelous masked ball! You know! The one where his wife wore a unicorn head and his brother went beserk!
But who is that by the door? Oh my god – its Moaning Morton – we know it is him because he tells it is and is very helpful by also reeling off all his titles because he is also very peeved that he was not in the earlier episodes. After all, did you know it was him who actually persuaded Rory of Buckingham to have that awful haircut!
Now Dr Whoenry is going on a royal progress. An ideal time for the flowers in the attic (which is where Woodiwitch and her children now appear to live) to regale us with lots of little details that we would not know have happened since King Richard was killed (sob sob sob wail! I will never get over that….obviously)
Apparently Stafford has not bent the knee (well there were two of them really so there would be four to bend)
Hang on! Cursed Codpieces! Francis Lovell did what?
Now apart from all you first time TWQ watchers who may be going “Who?” I can assure you that Francis Lovell (King Richard’s best mate and part-time camoflague expert) NEVER EVER EVER bent his knee to Tudor.
Now – I admit. He may have wanted to bend his knee and plant it squarely in the royal jewels area of a certain Chewdor bloke, but that’s it. Now it appears “Lovell is our man and when we find him…”
Well best of luck with that then as I searched all ten episodes three years ago with a tooth comb and a magnifying glass and never got a sniff! But, for dramatic licence I bet Nokia Ned may suddenly have his GPS turned on and find him with no trouble at all #spoileralert
Now they are all getting dressed in up in everything to go everywhere (Yes they are EE Mobile) – but not York. It seems there is no service there. Or no one wants to pay service to him. King Henrywho decided to wear black (very fitting) and even found a sword to play with. Even if he wasn’t quite sure which was the sharp end.
Shirking Stanley loves his new velvet beret so much he has hardly taken it off at all since he bought it. And I bet is it reversible!
Even the horses are decked in gold plastic – sorry – expensive gold armour.
King Whoenry is in a real strop because he keeps telling us there is NO WAY he is going to York as they are all bad men up there who loved a man who according to some historians never ever went further than Warwick. But Mini Lizzie-ish is determined he will go to York, because she is secretly writing to her ex-lovers very best ex-mate who you haven’t seen before and asking him to kill the husband she now has and making him an ex-husband! This series is almost ex-rated. (its certainly not ex-citing)
Because King Whoenry is scared, he puts his best crown on and crows on about Margaret of York (last seen in 1468 exiting over the channel) has attacked two ships with the aid of Captain Jack Sparrow – and has obviously done that because Henry is such a clever usurper he has stopped all her trade restrictions (God this is painful and apologies – I invented the Capt Sparrow bit in there just to liven up the script. It was actually Capt Birdseye)
The silent ladies-in-waiting can't be bothered to wait and all bugger off somewhere to be silent somewhere else but no one realises – or cares.
Now there’s rather a lot of royal mail – and no where near enough of a certain royal Male –as there are letters flying about all over the place. To Francis Lovell, and Harry Stafford (the dead one?) and my sainted the king’s lady mother.
Ooh look – just in time! it's Nokia Ned. And he has a letter saying Henry’s no good in bed – does no one realise he could have just sent a text and stayed in the stables?
Lizzie-Mini-ish is now off to York because King Whoenry has been told if he doesn’t go to York he will have to go to bed with no dinner.
Everyone is worried about Mini-Lizzie-ish because although her child is blooming no-one can even see it beneath the very slim 22 inch waist encased in the gold-not blue-not gold gown. I’m not. She is not pregnant – obviously – only in this epic – sorry episode!
But now she can’t go because of the swearing sickness – oh sorry – it’s the sweating sickness – its just this episode which is making me swear. So instead of her daughter the older Lizzie-ish decides she is going to York and even packs a nice flock suitcase –and uses Nokia Ned to print off her bedding – sorry – boarding passes.
I then got very confused – but maybe because my kettle actually started to boil colourfully! There were some children, the sight of King Henrywhos chicken legs in bed and then the children appeared to be being attacked by Cardinal Moaning. (Well we didn’t see any of that in TWQ did we ladies! Hmnnn? What does that say about a Tudor court?)
Basically Lizzie-Maxi – is now a prisoner to prevent her going north of Warwick and Moaning Morton will pray for her - like bugger he will!
Can I summarise this next bit? Please? Great!!
1. Henry has a cloak by Axminster. It certainly isn’t a shag pile!
2. His armour appears to be gold PVC
3. Everyone is getting sick (I know the feeling)
4. Lady Elizabeth De La Poodle (geddit?) is shocked when she is told she can no longer ride side-saddle because times have changed! Bloody hell! Thank god for the Tardis! We are obviously now in the 19th Century!
So they all sod off to York (other northern cities are available)
Lizzie Maxi is now ripping up her underwear, writing on it with blood, and giving Nokia Ned another ring. Unluckily this time, he doesn’t pick up. He’s a bit thick and it takes his horse – Shergar – to tell him his phone is ringing (sorry – show him where Elizabeth’s ring has landed in the long grass!)
Suitably engaged (he! he!) – she now flings her underwear out of the window so that Nokia Ned can hoof it up to a nice country mansion where Francis Lovell may well have been living since 1473.
Now that King Whoenry has left London – Moaning Morton is shutting the whole of the city down and leaving everyone in the dark. Teddy (the Earl of Warwick – not the dead one tho) wants to play “Fox and Geese” but Moaning Morton has hidden all the toys away. Bloody spoilsport! I bet that is because even Teddy could have beaten Dr Whothehellishe at board games.
Now The Duchess of Hatlessfield is back and so goes to visit everyone in the dark and is so pissed off she decides she is going to Burgundy because that’s where all the booze is!
But meanwhile…somewhere in leafy England… the postman has arrived…..Nokia Ned rings a bell ….a door opens… an old man with an Aneurin-Bur coloured beard answers the door and takes a letter from him…no one speaks a bloody word mind you during this scene…..so this could be a completely different programme or the adverts…but then, the letter says….something like…
“Dear Francis Lovell, I know you really have lots of important titles as you were the most influential man in England apart from the King in 1483-85 but I am rapidly dying of blood loss and have already written 40,000 words. We are so sorry but we won’t be able to meet you in York now as my battery is flat and London is completely in the dark. As we can’t get there would you mind awfully forgiving Emma Frost and Philippa Gregory for leaving you out of The White Queen completely and for not casting Henry Cavill in your character now they have realised you actually existed - and go and stab Henry for me. Thanking you in anticipation. Ex Queenie and her sprogs”
Now I know we didn’t see Aneurard’s best mate inTWQ (neither did he) but I know a few things about Frank (we are on good terms!)
a) He was not older than Aneurard – or King Whoenry – in fact he was about the same age as King Whoenry.
b) If he had a beard – it would not have been that one.
c) He did not spend his months after Bosworth living in a house, a very nice house in the country….he spent most of them in sanctuary
d) He did not bend his knee….oh, done that one.
So – after a lot more of whatever went on – we are in York! And the good people of Yorkshire have already heard about King Whoenry as the mayor ( I assume) steps up – looking all northern in the best Starz tradition – ie he is wearing a pork pie hat – and hands over all his money to the king. You didn’t see that in TWQ either #justsaying
There is a flurry of activity, Gandalf in a blue cloak – oh sorry I think that is supposed to be Francis – and because King Henrywho can’t hide behind anyone this time he gets wounded. Disclaimer – other versions of this historic visit to York are available.
Cue horses riding about in Sherwood Forest ( aka Yorkshire) Bells ringing – a very dark church where the king takes refuge and a sudden clarity when he remembers he is 28 years old. Nice to know they got his age right here – they couldn’t make their minds up in TWQ.
So, the rebels with a bloody good cause ride north and are chased by Stand Up Stanley. But him and his 30 men are stopped by 5 rebels parked across the road and as Francis disappears into Sherwood forest in his hood ( this is how legends start girls and boys) Stanley – or it could have been Grasper Chewdor – bored now - decides that 30 against 5 is not good odds for him so they let them go.
They then report back to King Whoenry that they lost him at Middleham. Where? Is a entire audience now looking around at each other and saying “Where’s Middleham?” OK – think north of Sheriff Hutton…sorry Woodville Manor North Yorkshire!
And still Francis has not said a word as he rides of back to Bestwood…with his merry rebels and a friar – they are so tired they need to find some tuck….
Well that excitement over – heres the rest in a nutshell…
I. Lizziemini is still in the same frock
II. People are dying of the swearing sickness – I call it that because Dr King Whoenry swears it was nothing to do with his mercenaries brought out of prision to usurp a country
III. Lizzie maxi is playing Rapunzel in a Tower
IV. A priest is smoking in the diddly diddly cloister
V. Henry can write (see below)
VI. Lizzie ish pisses off Moaning Morton by breaking into the treasury and stealing all Henry’s (well Aneurard’s really) gold
VII. Breathing in very deeply is apparently a medieval form of abortion
VIII. Teddy and his sister give all the gold away to the poor ( Hurrah for the Yorks)
IX. Everyone is now playing ‘Fox and Geese” at least they are all wearing beaks
X. Lizzies (x 2) are both fed up of being cooped up ( I told you HortonhearsaWho was a chicken!)
XI. James of Scotland needs a wife – so Henrywho thinks it could be Lizzie (which one? Who cares? It doesn’t happen!)
XII. Mad Cags is told to stop flirting with NotGrasper
XIII. Princess Cecily doesn’t do much but at least she’s got off the bed but is writing secret letters to Mad Cags – well no one else want to hear her whinge
XIV. All of the people are suddenly cured and thank MiniLizzi for it – which pisses of her mum because she wanted everyone to die, whoever was left to blame the king, and whoever was left, probably Francis, to kill Dr Who.
XV. Yes, I am losing the plot. And the will to live (and what plot?)
XVI. King Henrywho suddenly realizes Teddy is not so bare of lineage as he thought – remembers he is a York – and locks him up in the Tower. That will be the last you see of him – until he is at least 54 and meeting Perkin Warden
XVII. Oh yes – where has he gone?
XVIII. The peasants are revolting ( the old ones are the best)
XIX. Dr Whoenry is so frightened that Mag Cags is going to knit him a personal bodyguard.
XX. The king is not at all happy that his wife is more popular than him and people shout out for her in the street (note to Lizzie – avoid Paris and Mercedes Benz cars)
XXI. Francis is now in Burgundy – I hope he has taken his Visa-card with him as if he ends up in the wine bar with Duchess Dyson it could be expensive. I bet she sucks up some drink!
XXII. Grasper and Strange – or it’s that Strange Grasper are being sent to Burgundy (psst don’t mention the trade restrictions!)
XXIII. Stanley is pissed that he wont get the chaunce to shew erf his accent and his nuu beret!
XXIV. As it is now raining the king is in a pac-a-mac. Its not just any pac-a-mac – it’s a designer leather pac-a-mac. Its DickheadNY!
XXV. Suddenly Not so Mini-Lizzi is nine months preggers and it is time for her confinement. The bloody lycra in that blue-but gold-but blue dress is amazing!
The end – I can’t wait for Ep 3 – apart from I can- just to see what happens when the booze cruise hits Burgundy.
Appendix 1
“Dear Mrs King Whoenry, this is your husband writing to you from York. Well, its my scribe writing actually as I don’t now how to and all the furniture has disappeared and so I am stuck with standing up, swanning around in my best Berber, and glowering at everyone like a sulky teenager. A man you will never have heard of called Francis Lovell has stabbed me in the flesh! Yes! Me! I have flesh! Ok I know it looks like scales but I am using medication and hope it will get better soon….anyway… so I am wounded. Not mortally. In fact, its barely a fleshwound. More of a scratch really. In fact, it probably never happened at all. So, I am coming home. Its raining, my carpet is very wet and heavy, my plastic armour chafes and as I have eaten my fill of Yorkshire Parkin. In fact if I ever hear the word ‘Parkin’ again, I will have someone’s head. Honest! Your Tudor husband, Doctor King Henry the King of Kings. PS…will you still be wearing that blue-but gold-but blue dress when I get home you minx? You know how partial I am to a bit of parti-coloured damask!”
Appendix 2 –
Dear Francis Lovell
If you fancy a pint, I can hop on the next P&O Ferry!
Much love – your favourite diarist (and author of Desmond’s Daughter).

Finishes and Fire Resistance

Following the Dame Judith Hackett’ report on Grenfell Tower, there has been a great deal of development regarding the specification of finishes and materials for use in dwellings over 18m in height in England. The recent spate of balcony fires have also questioned the use of combustible materials in these areas. It’s safe to say that the industry is quite confused and in some areas trying to gain clarification of what falls into legislation. So where do we currently stand and what should we be specifying for windows, doors and curtain walls to be compliant with current legislation?
The government has just released its feedback on its recent consultation ‘Review of the ban on the use of combustible materials in and on the external walls of buildings including attachments’. Whilst not a definitive document, it does demonstrate the way the wider construction industry is moving, it highlights areas where further clarity is required and I would encourage anyone involved in the external envelope to offer feedback on the consultation document which will close on 13th April 2020 at 23:45.
Currently the legislation is only applicable to apartments or dwellings over 18m in height, all other buildings are currently exempt. Whilst most window materials used at this height are supplied in aluminium, there are quite a number of existing buildings in other materials such as PVC. Although anodised aluminium is completely fire resistant, coatings, such as powder coat can have a ‘limited combustibility’.
In the external envelope we are talking about fire resistance and the possibility of surface spread of flame. This will mean that specified products will need to be non-combustible and gain a Euroclass A1 rating under BS EN 13501-1 or a Euroclass A2-s1,d0 rating of ‘limited combustibility’, but what are these classes and what do they mean?
The BS EN 13501-1 classification comprises three ratings. The first is the main Euroclass rating, will be the reference A1, A2, B, C, D, E or F, with A1 having the highest resistance class, as shown in the simplified tables below.
The second classification relates to smoke emission when subject to fire. This is given by a rating of s1, s2 or s3, with smoke emission classifications not being provided for ratings of E to F.
The third classification relates to the level of production of flaming droplets or particles when subject to fire. This is given by a rating of d0, d1 or d2, from highest to lowest performance.
Window, door and curtain walls are currently exempt from the ban on combustible materials used above 18m England. This includes the glass and aluminium frames for the glazing. Together with this, all backing rods, sealants and membranes used in the fixing of these windows and doors are all exempt. However, and there is always a ‘but’, any opaque spandrel panels used within the glazing are not exempt, as well as other cladding items such as cills and column casings.
Anodised aluminium will carry an A1 rating as it is ‘non-combustible’, powder coated aluminium can carry an A2-s1,d0 as required in the legislation as long as the powders have been fire tested and the thickness of the powder coating controlled.

To further complicate matters, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland currently have slightly different recommendations:
Scotland over 11m: A1 or A2 - latest update 2019 Wales over 18m: B-s3, d2 - latest update 2016 Northern Ireland over 18m: B-s3, d2 - latest update 2012
As a specifier independently specifying powder coat, you should ask the powder coater to provide certification that the powder they use is tested for both fire resistance and the maximum thickness that their powder must be applied onto the aluminium to achieve the rating.
“So are all your current specifications for powder coated products that fall within this legislation, used over the maximum height in apartments and dwellings, meeting the minimum standard of a fire rating of A1 or A2-s1,d0?”
As the legislation continues to be in a state of change, if specifying fenestration and cladding products for apartments or dwellings over 18m from GFL, then speak to your aluminium systems company who should offer clear guidance on the subject. Here at Aluprof we specialise in fire rated screens and facades and are well placed to offer architects and specifiers clear and current advice.
Since setting up the Aluprof Project Office at the Business Design Centre in London the systems company has rapidly grown their specification influence in the UK with their high performance architectural aluminium systems. Further expansion of the companies headquarters in Altrincham now provides specifiers with meeting facilities and an extensive showroom of commercial systems to view. With overseas growth across Europe spreading into the Middle East and firm roots already in the East of the USA, the company is becoming a global player in facade supply. Further information is available on the companies website at aluprof.co.uk or direct from their UK office in Altrincham on 0161 941 4005.

The evolution of tennis fashion
More than any other sporting attire, tennis uniforms have played an important role in reflecting fashion trends and cultural shifts, and players have always been scrutinised for their style choices as well as their performance. In the early 1900s, when modesty and elegance was prized over comfort and practicality, women had to prove their highest athletic skills donning bulky ankle-grazing skirts, tucked-in, long-sleeved blouses, neckties and the occasional voluminous hat over perfectly coiffed hair. This constrictive dress code partially relaxed in the 1920s, when Suzanne “La Divine” Lenglen became an international trendsetter by bringing the flapper style of the decade onto the court. Her uniform—sleeveless dresses with just-below-the-knee pleated skirts, monogrammed cardigans and chic crimson and bright orange bandeaus—was designed by French couturier Jean Patou and landed her in the pages of Vogue in 1926.
Other sartorial innovations were less easily celebrated. In 1949, American tennis player Gussie Moran stunned her Wimbledon crowd by wearing an unusually short skirt that revealed a glimpse of her lace-trimmed underwear at every movement. The designer behind the scandalous outfit, British-born Ted Tinling, was accused of bringing “vulgarity and sin into tennis”, but he was simply forerunning the shortening of hemlines that would race through fashion in the next decade. Despite being banned from his Wimbledon hosting duties for the following 33 years, Tinling continued to design one-of-a-kind outfits for the best athletes in the field, from Maria Bueno’s Dacron and PVC minidress to the rhinestone-encrusted green and blue dress that Billie Jean King wore for her famous match against Bobby Riggs in 1973. Tinling’s revolutionary ensembles opened the doors to new colours, materials and silhouettes and paved the way for the more extravagant outfits of the 1980s and 1990s, culminating in the Williams sisters’ unique fashion choices. To celebrate the opening of the oldest tennis tournament in the world, revisit the history of tennis fashion in 15 images.

Rihanna Turns Heads In Curve-Hugging Dress With Crazy Socks & See-Through Heels
Rihanna has been busy taking over the fashion and makeup industry (basically the world), but Tuesday night the 29-year-old stepped out to enjoy a SZA concert in New York. Clad in head-to-toe Burberry, Rihanna donned a baseball cap, vintage trench coat and red wool socks from the spring ’18 runway, which were featured at London Fashion Week in September. Underneath her jacket, the “Kiss It Better” singer sported a curve-hugging black minidress that flattered her body. And as for footwear, Ri Ri wore barely-there PVC mules from Manolo Blahnik. With two transparent straps, it almost appeared as if the Puma designer’s feet were totally unsecured and she was merely walking on her tiptoes in Burberry socks.
