I have a strong headcanon that during Pale Kings, reign, consuetudinary rituals were very common. So, before the hollow knight were sealed, he offered himself to tidy their armor and, since it's a gijinka, braid their hair as well. Being their last time though, it was meant to be a solemn way to bid farewell.
