Anyway, Roumen Antonov claims to have successfully completed the certification tests for his Rumen. Honda, Nissan aim to merge by 2026 in historic pivot
TOKYO (Reuters) - Honda and Nissan are in talks to merge by 2026, they said on Monday, a historic pivot for Japan's auto industry that underlines the threat Chinese EV makers now pose to the world's long-dominant legacy car makers.
The tie-up would create the world's third-largest auto group by vehicle sales after Toyota and Volkswagen.
It would also give the two companies scale and a chance to share resources in the face of intense competition from Tesla and more nimble Chinese rivals, such as BYD.
The merger of Honda, Japan's second-largest automaker, with Nissan, its No. 3, would be the biggest reshaping in the global auto industry since Fiat Chrysler Automobiles and PSA merged in 2021 to create Stellantis in a $52-billion deal.
Smaller Mitsubishi Motors, in which Nissan is top shareholder, was also considering joining and would make a decision by the end of January, the companies said.
The chief executives of all three held a joint press conference in Tokyo.

Pour optimiser toujours plus leurs gestes, les travailleurs sont observés en permanence et on rogne sur chaque seconde. Par ailleurs, la concurrence fait maintenant son entrée sur les chaînes : les salaires sont individualisés, le recours aux intérimaires est systématique. Honda, Nissan agreed to discuss merger
Honda and Nissan agreed to examine the possibility of merging to form a joint holding company, potentially leading to the world’s third-largest automaker, according to Reuters.
The two companies would aim for combined sales of 30 trillion yen ($191 billion) and operating profit of more than 3 trillion yen as a result of the potential merger, according to the statement. The automakers intended to conclude talks by around June 2025 and then create a holding company by August 2026, after which both companies’ shares would be delisted.
The consolidation would create the world’s third-largest auto group by car sales after Toyota and Volkswagen to counter growing challenges from Tesla and Chinese rivals. Honda, Japan’s second-largest carmaker after Toyota, has a market capitalisation of more than $40 billion, whereas Nissan is valued at about $10 billion.
The integration of the two iconic Japanese brands would mark the biggest reorganisation in the global automotive industry since Fiat Chrysler Automobiles and PSA merged in 2021 to create Stellantis.
The merger with Mitsubishi Motors will take the Japanese group’s global sales to more than 8 million vehicles. South Korea’s Hyundai and Kia currently hold third place. In March, Nissan and Honda said they were considering co-operation in electrification and software development. They agreed to conduct joint research and in August expanded the co-operation to Mitsubishi Motors.
Last month, Nissan announced a plan to cut 9,000 jobs and 20 per cent of its global production capacity after sales fell in key markets in China and the US. Honda also reported worse-than-expected earnings due to lower sales in China.
However, Nissan’s former chairman, Carlos Ghosn, said in an online press conference with the Foreign Correspondents Club of Japan on Monday that the Honda-Nissan alliance was unlikely to succeed. Ghosn is wanted as a fugitive in Japan for jumping bail and fleeing to Lebanon. His arrest in 2018 for financial irregularities led Nissan into crisis.

We have pretty much always ran PSA group vans. Primarily Citroen Dispatches, and last year we added a Vauxhall Vivaro, same van, different badge. The Vauxhall was the LWB version which came in handy when transporting our gourmet burger units. To be fair, they have been pretty reliable. Normally we swapped the oldest one in each year. Covid, mucked the system up, and we found ourselves needing three new vans. Originally in 2021 we ordered a new Dispatch. It was going to be delivered for September. Then October, November December, January, and finally some time after March. At that point we cancelled it. That turned out to be a mistake, since between ordering and cancelling it, the price had gone up some four grand, and the spec had been cut in half. Everywhere we looked, they were quoting, pretty much indeterminate delivery times. Eventually I happened on a garage with a Vauxhall Vivaro, still at a reasonable spec, but a lot more expensive then we had been paying for vans. We added that to the fleet last March. Vauxhall Vivaro Roll around 2023 and the decision was made that we needed another two vans. Queue a look around our usual suppliers. What we found was that they had gone up another four grand since last year, while simultaneously the spec was cut again. So in effect, we would be paying more per van than the top of the range versions had been a couple of years ago. And for our money we would be getting something not much above the minimum spec. Enter Nissan Primastar To be honest, the cut in spec pissed me off as much as the jump in price, so I decided that maybe it was time to look around. Now that isn't as easy as it sounds. Citroen, Peugeot, Fiat, Toyota and Vauxhall are all the same van. We hired a couple of Ford Custom's one Christmas, and everyone refused to drive them, the handling was that poor. My experience with Mercedes vans, is that if you drive through a puddle of water they start to fall apart with rust within the week. VW transporters were liked, but just too bloody expensive for what you got. Eventually we turned up at Nissan. The vans were a nice drive, slightly larger inside both the load area and the cabin than our previous vans which was a plus. Similar on fuel economy. Came with a shorter service interval than Citroen which is a bit crap, but were twenty per cent cheaper and came with a top of the range spec. they didn't come with twin side loading doors as standard, but it was an option for only £280. Comme le résume Alain Seften, délégué FO : « On fait tout pour que le salarié sur la ligne de montage soit un robot, ne se déplace plus et ait toutes les pièces nécessaires à proximité. » Autrement dit, la cadence de travail s'accélère, les postes sont réorganisés pour limiter les déplacements de l'ouvrier, leur taille est réduite pour faire tenir un maximum de matériel sur une surface minimale. Automotive: Stellantis and Orano join forces in battery recycling

The car manufacturer and the nuclear specialist will create a joint venture aimed at recovering waste from used vehicle batteries and gigafactories.
Orano takes another step towards the automotive sector. This Tuesday, the nuclear specialist announced an agreement with Stellantis[1] “aimed at creating a joint venture specializing in the recycling of end-of-life vehicle batteries and production waste from gigafactories” in Europe and North America.
This new entity must rely on an “innovative low-carbon process” developed by Orano[2], “enabling on the one hand the recovery of all the components of lithium-ion batteries and on the other hand the manufacture of new materials for the cathodes”. It will also make it possible to produce “black mass”, a powder of lithium, cobalt and nickel.[3]
Production launched in early 2026
The elements thus upgraded should enable Stellantis “to consolidate its position in the battery value chain by securing additional supply […] necessary for the electrification of the sector and the energy transition”. The manufacturer also ensures that it complies with the European Union's 2031 batteries’ directive, which provides for the use of recycled materials, in a circular economy approach.
“We are delighted with this partnership concluded with a major player such as Stellantis and to be able to work together on the recycling of used electric batteries,” said Guillaume Dureau, director in particular responsible for Innovation, R&D and batteries at Orano. Production is scheduled to start in early 2026 and will reuse the automaker’s “existing infrastructure and resources.”
This agreement is not Orano's first foray into electric battery recycling[4]. In May, the group announced an agreement to create two joint ventures in Dunkirk with the Chinese company XTC[5], specializing in the production of materials for batteries. Formalized by French president Emmanuel Macron during a trip to the North, of the country this project is estimated at 1.5 billion euros and should create around 1,700 jobs.
