It's like.
It's like yes. Yes, harm has been done. No, we can't undo it. We can't unkill the forest spirit. But we can minimize the fallout. We can try to stop making it worse. We can find a way forward. It won't ever be the same, but you can't just give up. You have to keep trying because you're still alive and you can make it less bad.
And it just.
It just makes me want to cry.
But like, in a cathartic way.

so there's a new fish (Branchiostegus sanae). it's named after San from Princess Mononoke because of its cheek stripes and I'm in love with the picture they used to illustrate this:

San looking lovingly at this fish while it is giving me the worst side eye imaginable.

Princess Mononoke is THE MOVIE that got me out of the typical western-storytelling/American mindset. The first time I watched it, I noticed something was odd, and then on a second watch, I realized, NO ONE WAS EVIL in that villainous, mustache-twirling way. Everyone was human and selfish, but also was either doing good in some capacity or just their job. There was no one to root for, and that came together in the spirit of the forest, who was both life and death. And anyway, it's incredible and there's so much more nuance and things I continue to uncover as I strip away what was "expected" and embraced a different culture's perspective. But the way I learned to appreciate it was to reformat my brain to accept a new approach to a narrative.
there's something uncomfortable about western millennials/gen z's deep obsession with watering Studio Ghibli movies down into "wholesome bean comfort flicks aesthetic uwu japan" when half of these people completely miss the point of these films and the complex nuanced topics they deal with, especially when it comes to post war Japan.
