Just found this and I'm already SO looking forward to it!! A question of purely intellectual curiosity: how much of an a-hole arrogant Greek-god-style deity can the MC get? Somehow Seth is really giving me vibes of those vaguely psychopathic, no I mean morally ambiguous G/god(s) that are the norms in ancient mythology, and I've always been a fan of "we bring out the worst in each other" messed-up relationship dynamics ... in fiction only of course!!

Also, sorry in advance if this is spoilery or you don't feel like answering, in which case feel free to ignore! Just curious: what would be your personal "favorite" MC type for each of the ROs? (Not necessarily most healthy or the one you most approved of, just "favorite" in the sense that you personally find interesting/like to write.) For example, I'm all for opposite attraction, so I'd probably play a mortal-despising MC when romancing Dawn, a cinnamon roll MC when romancing Vex, and a laid-back and humorous, wow-technology-is-so-fun-I-want-to-die-in-VR-who-cares-about-revenge-YOLO!! MC when romancing Bruno ... if any of these options are possible, of course haha. But I'm really curious about what combination you personally enjoy writing!

Exactly! He's really assumed and embraced what it means to be a God. If I ever write his povs (I've a few plans) you'll get to see what I mean! I think his inner monologue is very interesting.

THIS! Okay I agree with the opposite-attraction sentiment lgwkkgsk I'll try to give a bit more variety for people who aren't into it as much^^

Dawn- she's mean but it's very easy for her to pity MC and feel bad for them. I'd really feed into the rivals dynamic and try to get into her bad side kgskkf just proving Dawn that Deities are entitled.

Bruno- MC who really feeds into the worshipping dynamic. This man is on his knees and willing to kiss the ground MC walks^^

A- I like the past friends over the lovers dynamic personally. Just MC agonizing over the fact that they're reuniting with who looks like their friend, but oh no now they're having feelings for them😔

Vex- Vex is very protective so I think soft MCs would mesh really well with them.

Eris- fake dating fake dating! Also a MC who distrusts VR and shows Eris how real dreams are. I think grumpy MCs with a secret soft side would mesh well with her, especially knowing how flirty she is (and how she has a secret soft side too^^).

Werewolf– favorite antagonist/villain you have ever written for?

Oooof. This is hard. I tend not to write antagonists per se, because up until now I have rejected typical story structure and had a sorta more ambiguous conglomerate/organisation as The Bad Guy or just, no Bad Guy. (Or, perhaps most frequently, a Bad Guy who becomes a Love Interest, so. 😅)

However! Whilst writing that I remembered that I quite enjoyed writing some of the scenes with the primary antagonist in Hellbent, in a similar way to which I enjoyed writing the climax of ATN; taking both of those observations, I realise that I think what I enjoy the most about writing villains/whatever is writing the reaction of the 'protagonist' to the big confrontations that occur. Both of the scenes I'm thinking of are super emotionally charged and basically climactic, and I think I enjoy the dynamic that comes into play with that. ^_^

Also I'm hella looking forward to writing a couple of antagonists for D&D, so this answer may change when I eventually get to that project, too. :P

Mummies – what would 3 of your oc’s be dressed for Halloween?

Oh lord, should've expected a Halloween question from the Halloween asks. 😆 Legit though I am useless at these kinds of things because I strongly dislike dressing up myself, so it's hard to think of what the heck my characters would like to do because of my visceral hatred of the whole enterprise.

Unreasonably vehement dislike of costumes aside, let me think...

So I reckon Latrell would be most like me; he's got such solid walls up against the entire world that dressing up would be way too close to feeling vulnerable. So -- given his work 'uniform' is a suit, think TV detectives sorta idea -- he'd probably dress as, like, a lawyer. (Think Jeff Winger from Community as David Beckham sorta idea. 😂)

Ronan actually is pretty easy too, he'd go as like a sexy firefighter or something like that. He works hard to look like he does, he wants to show it off! But it'd be as 'tasteful' as that sorta costume could be, not like a tongue-in-cheek joke costume, because he takes everything way too seriously.

Oh, Albie! Now Albie would be wayyyy into Halloween. She would likely go as a very well-known character -- I'm thinking something like Red Riding Hood? Or another classic fairytale sorta thing that everybody knows. Even a witch; yeah, I'm seeing her with some outrageous over-the-top cloak sorta idea. Her costume would not at all be revealing, but she'd still fucking work it, y'know? Because that's what Albie does. :D

(That took... an alarming amount of thought. Talk about ways to get to know my characters better! 😂)

Ghoul - Top 5 tropes that you enjoy/hate writing?

Oh, man. Oh, lordy. Now here's a question.

Now, I'm not so great at tropes, so I did have a bit of a look through tvtropes for inspiration. The first couple in each list came to me immediately, the others I had to look up names for:

LOVE: forbidden romance; rivals to lovers; found family; a specific combo of badass in distress and defiant captive; and character undercover, whereby a character pretends to be on one side and they're actually on the other (and then they potentially actually switch sides? Or they don't! So much potential in this trope ahhhh).

HATE: instalove; one-solution only love triangles (meaning if the solution is some type of poly situation, I'm waaaay more on board); clumsy is a flaw where literally the only consequence of their clumsiness is falling into the Love Interest's arms; kinda dovetails with doesn't think she's beautiful where the (usually first person POV) narrator goes on and on about how plain they are and then ends up in the aforementioned love triangle by the end of the first chapter; aaaaand... oh! Not sure if this is a trope per se, but I hate writer as main character. Something about it seriously rubs me the wrong way, like an author has taken the write what you know advice way too far. Like, I actively avoid books that have MCs and/or narrators that are supposed to be authors. This really should have been my first one on the hate list because damn, I really hate it. 😅

Whew, that was... a lot. Looks like I primarily hate badly-written YA? 😅 But yeah! Thanks for making me think on that, was a lot harder than I expected! :D

🦉 – multiple pov or single pov?

Used to be multiple POV, always. ATN is probably the first story I've ever written where I didn't get to a certain point and be like 'oh man, I'm gonna need [character]'s perspective in here too!'. Given my musing about finding different character's voices, I also think single POV is something I'm gonna make an effort to stick with for my next few projects! ^_^

I always end up doing this thingy when the concept is changing XD this like my, what, 6th novel prep tag? Always helps.

FIRST LOOK

1. Describe your novel in 1-2 sentences (elevator pitch)

Cultural scientist Acacia can finally realize her dream of doing field notes in different mage regions, but has to team up with a cold and judgemental bodyguard and his careless dragon-shifting brother in the process.

The story is basically about three exceptional people that don't fit in in various ways - Wes by nature, Kyler by force and Acacia because of her interests - and how they deal with it.

2. How long do you plan for your novel to be? (Is it a novella, single book, book series, etc.)

One novel, maybe a series later on.

3. What is your novel’s aesthetic?

Trains, mountains, cities, lakes and fog, spirts, sandstorms and hurricanes, rain. 

4. What other stories inspire your novel?

Naruto, Frozen 2, Mash, Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, Star Wars, Atla, Avatar, The greatest Showman.

6. Who is your protagonist?

The protagonist Acacia drives the story with her goal of acquiring field notes for her research. But both Kyler and Wes are main and pov characters.

Acacia is analytical scientist and a imaginative dreamer, passionate but insecure inside. Her quick mind and abstract philosophic thought process is hard to keep up with.

7. Who is their closest ally?

Her reluctant bodyguard Kyler is son of one of the most significant Pulsor families and the most powerful and dedicated Pulsor mage (controls lighting) of his generation - but rather cold and closed off.

Kyler's younger brother Wes is the reincaratnion of a dragon - the rarest and most ancient spirits - basically a god. Mischievous, reckless but cunning, he has never been allowed to leave home before.

8. Who is their enemy?

There are no enemies per se. There are obstacles, energy thieves and Phatoms on the way, people that mean harm when they see someone different, but there is no antagonist. 

9. What do they want more than anything?

Acacia wants to make ethnographic research on the similarities between magic types and the ways of expression and attitude that add up to be the same thing - people living their lives and looking at the world through the taught lenses of their respective magical culture. 

10. Why can’t they have it?

Doing research in different regions is hard, because travelling between regions is limited and dangerous. There are Phatoms, energy thieves and people that hate differences and loathe people interested in magic not their own. 

In the end the biggest obstacle is probably the way hybrid magicians are loathed - it’s considered a betrayal and weakness not to follow one’s born in type and learn other ones as well. Something Acacia loves, and other people like Wes could use.

11. What do they wrongly believe about themselves?

Kyler believes he has failed. Wes that he is not enough. Acacia that magic is the most magical thing.

13. What is the internal conflict?

Acacia’s internal conflict is mostly about staying true to her belief that different magics can coexist and learn from each other. She is the impact and main driving character of the story - she changes the others and struggles to stay true to herself and her love for different magics and learning from them. 

Kyler’s conflict is about his perfectionalism that was recenltly ruined by his kindapping by the Shadow Cult that forced a magic upon him he hates and he can’t forgive himself for being weak enough to succumb to it. It's something that was forced upon him but became part of him nonetheless.

Wes deals with his original spirit memories not returning as they should.

14. What is the external conflict?

Acacia’s external conflict is about her love for Sight, ability to see nature spirits on another plane of existence and the danger she might lose connection to reality and her body if she spends too much time in it. 

Kyler’s conflict is dealing with the very real consequences of Shadow Craft magic being now part of him. It’s always there when he is torn or angry or hurt, crawling under his skin and he hates he can’t control it completely. 

Wes’s conflict is about finding a balance between his love for his family and the human world and the foreign yearning for his wilder dragon side. 

15. What is the worst thing that could happen to your protagonist?

For Acacia to lose her connection to her body by not being able to stay in the moment. 

For Kyler it would losing control of Shadow Craft and having it rule him.

For Wes it would be being abondoned by his family and brother and losing the life he has when his memories come back and he finds out about his spirit life. 

16. What secret will be revealed that changes the course of the story?

No magic is really bad. Or good. The key is balance and intent.  

17. Do you know how it ends?

I can envision several ending scenes that would fit, they all mostly fit together.

18. What is the theme?  

The main theme is self-worth, from self-understanding, acceptance of who you are with all the sides and flaws and yearnings and self-love and confidence in who you are and going after what resonates with you. Keeping the storm inside you alive so to say. 

19. What is a recurring symbol?  

Storms? XD The symbols representing each of the four main magics are moon sicle, sun, lightning bolt and a spiral. 

20. Where is the story set? (Share a description!)

It’s set in modern age in a made up country divided into four regions accoriding to its dominating magic practice. These are also very different in landscapes - from mountain village of Pulsors, skyscapers of Aurals, lake bungallows of Sensors to deserts of Resonants. 

21. Do you have any images or scenes in your mind already?

The big tentpole scenes are pretty sure, the rest I will figure as I go. 

22. What excited you about this story?  

The way I can use magic types as metaphors for fictional cultures and explore their related views and approaches. The different value systems are much clearer in such a excessive example. 

Also all my favourite tropes fit into the story! From rivals to lovers, brothers, trio dynamics, gradual friendships, bodyguards, spirits, Shifters, reincarnations, dragons, healing, deeling with the fixed and growth mindset, perfectionalism and vulnerbility, how to stay in the present moment, how to find balance, different ways to express emotions, how to deal with differences, understanding vs tolerance vs acceptance, how to find - cope - stay true as well as have faith and confidence in who you are...all questions I'm personally very curious about.

23. Tell us about your usual writing method!  

Building and living with characters in countless AUs, finding their arcs and a story to best realize them, magic system, themes and thematic questions I want to explore, finding a story to frame those, brainstorming, outlining and hopefully writing before the idea loses its spark.

As predicted, dear old predictable me is procrastinating again, but I’m fixated on the fact that @itsrottenvibes proposed that within my football!AU Yooker shippers call Yusuf/Nicky “Yucky” WHICH IS THE MOST AMAZING THING AND 100% ACCURATE

This is three Inception levels deep nonsense (The Old Guard > football alternate universe > “RPF” within this football universe) but I’m OBSESSED with thinking what the in-universe fandom is like. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, check out The Beautiful Game before you @ me.

Yusuf/Booker: MAJOR FANDOM SHIP. This ship attracts fans from rival clubs. Even AC Milan fans hate-follow Yooker on IG just to view their stories. There are wonderful, moderate Yooker fans, and then there are some SERIOUS DELULUS who comment on every IG post that Yusuf and Booker make with 4th wall breaking bad shit like “THIS REMINDS ME OF CHAPTER 14 OF [YOOKER FIC WITH 1000 KUDOS ON AO3]

Booker’s fanon characterization: major yt boi woobie, he is somehow the main character in 75% of Yooker fics, reflecting the unconscious racial biases of the fandom. He is granted all sorts of magical powers and leading roles in the most egregious AUs. Top or Bottom Booker discourse is something you never want to touch with a 10 foot pole. Top!Booker fans basically never interact with Bottom!Booker fans since the Great Fanwars of bad discourse.

Yusuf’s fanon characterization: depends on which part of fandom you look at, Yusuf is either the Gary Stu of Gary Stus, or some sort of Manic Pixie Dream Boy who fixes Broken White Boy Booker and helps him achieve his dreams. The most popular Yusuf POV fic is one in which he is a quasi-James Bond type character, and Booker is some sexy villain that seduces him on a mission. Fans with a Yusuf bias tend to be...the coolest part of fandom, and they have an incredible skillset in producing gifs/edits/media from clips of Yusuf floating on the internet (that Armani ad has been milked to death 28937428934 ways)

Yusuf/Nichi, aka “Yucky”: only Fandom Olds ship this, and even so it’s kinda a rarepair since so many left the fandom. It was a bit of a thing back in 2021, but like, there was this post about how problematic the Yucky BNFs were and everyone did a hate-pile on and since then Yucky’s kinda...an icky ship no one wants to touch.

The Yucky fans are disturbingly literate, and write incredibly prescient fics, but also kinda weirdly elitist about it. A group of Yucky fans, who apparently attend Ivy League-level colleges, made an exclusive community of fanfic writers where they write fics for each other. It’s this elitist group that attracted the hate. A lot of the good Yucky fics have either been deleted or orphaned on AO3, because their authors work in governmental-level positions now. The best Yucky fanfic is a space academia AU written by an actual PhD candidate and the quality of that fic is like...Margaret Atwood style prose.

Nicky’s fanon characterization: The Yucky writers write Nicky as a thoughtful, intelligent human being (despite...the misspelled tattoo and Eurotrash haircuts), which the Yooker shippers think is extremely OOC. These days (in the year of our lord 2027), Nicky is often the stock villain in Yooker fics. In Yooker fics, he is always some sort of weird possessive ex-boyfriend (of Booker, surprise twist), bc Booker is the woobie that needs to be saved from the evil captain by Yusuf.

Booker/Lykon: the cute happy corner of the most sensible fans. They know they’re not a big ship, but they love each other, and they write the cutest fics and they’ve offended no one.

Rachida/Booker: this pairing surged in popularity during the Women’s World Cup, for that enemies to lovers dynamic. However, as a het ship, just doesn’t reach the heights of Yooker, and is kinda seen as a crack thing.

Nile/Booker: someone wrote this fic after Nile 1 Booker 0 (it’s super porny and basically consists of Nile domming the heck out of Booker), and everyone went crazy over it like OMG THIS IS THE BEST CRACK...two months later WAT THE HECK THIS SHIP IS REAL??? 

Yooker fans pretty much have a total meltdown at the reveal that Nile/Booker is canon. Most go into delulu mode, and write compensatory fanfics in which Booker is somehow so deeply closeted he marries Nile to prove he is very het, but then he goes back to training at Inter and he can’t resist Yusuf anymore. The worst Yooker fans make Nile a total bitch, but they are just a vocal minority (like 10% of the fandom). Most Yooker fans continue because they are still being fed new content on an extremely regular basis, like when Booker posts photos of shakshuka captioned “brunch with the bestie”. Another 10-15% of the Yooker fandom start writing Nile/Booker/Yusuf threesome fics.

Andy/Booker: ...why. But they exist. They often get hate for the age gap in their ship.

Unfortunately, no one really knows that Quynh/Booker are a thing, although it is known Andy and Quynh are married (I think the...Olympic ski fandom is like...minuscule). But Andy + Quynh/doing kinky things to Booker fics exist on the internet.

On the eve of Yusuf’s wedding to Nichi, Booker gets invited to spa day with Yusuf. Of course he posts about this on his IG “spa day with the bestie”, which sparks 283291321932 Yooker angst fics. The predominant plotstrains are: (1a) Booker has been secretly in love with his best friend the whole time, and finally confessions to his friend at the spa. Yusuf calls off the wedding, and Yooker ride into the sunset. (1b) Yusuf and Booker have been on and off the whole time, and Yusuf confesses to Booker that he has doubts on his compatibility with Nichi. Booker makes a grand romantic gesture, and Yusuf calls off the wedding, and Yooker ride into the sunset. (3) Nichi is forcing Yusuf to marry him for [flimsy reason]. Booker, the hero of the day, swings in to saves Yusuf from abusive big bad Nichi. (4) Blatant pwp hammam porn fic

I’m a big trope fan in general– faves include rivals/enemies to lovers, friends to lovers, bed-sharing, trapped in an enclosed space, mutual pining, secret dating/sneaking around, slow burn, FWBs that turns into something more. Subversions of tropes are also great, so don’t feel like you have to go the obvious route if you choose to write something tropey! I have a weird (not weird because it’s uncommon, more weird because it doesn’t fit in obviously with the rest of my likes and favored tropes) love for Secret Service/bodyguard/witness protection AU type fics, as well as Vampire Slayer AUs. I prefer to read about the getting-together parts of a relationship over established relationships, though I’m not totally opposed to the latter.   I love strong female friendships, strong-but-flawed-and-realistic female characters in general. Ladies kicking ass, preferably through cleverness and wit and competence as much if not more than through brawn, is the best, and I love it when they’re allowed to make mistakes and fuck up and dig themselves into a hole, too. I’m a big fan of the friends to lovers dynamic, and how they have always been it for each other in some way. As Elizabeth Henstridge put it, he’s deep down in her bones, and vice versa.

I’m also a big fan of AUs for this fandom, and love the idea that they’d come together in any universe.

A story driven by secret messages-- they are in a situation (could be SHIELD-verse or a full-on AU) where they are forced to communicate with coded/secret messages. Epistolary or otherwise is fine!

Paranormal investigators AU where they are super skeptical of what they're hunting for, or maybe they are hunting for it to prove it DOESN'T exist

Crazy Ex-Girlfriend - Rebecca Bunch/Greg Serrano

This is one of my favorite shows on TV right now, for so many reasons. It’s clever, it’s feminist, it’s funny, it’s real (even as it features elaborate musical sequences!), and the characters are so flawed but so great. I ship Rebecca and Greg so hard, in spite of their many flaws, and am so bummed that Greg’s gone, and hope they find a way to bring him back someday. I just love their chemistry-- bickery battle-of-wits style relationships are a huge favorite of mine. I also really just love Rebecca as a character. She’s such a mess and makes so many mistakes but I find her really relatable.

Feel free to write something that takes place before Greg left, or something canon-divergent as if he never left, though future fics with them are also totally great!

Prompts:

Rebecca/Greg + any number of tropes– stuck somewhere together; inconvenient bed-sharing; fake dating, the works.

The Good Place - Eleanor Shellstrop/Trevor, Eleanor Shellstrop & Trevor

There’s not much on Earth I love more than a Mike Schur show, and I’ve always loved Kristen Bell, so I was pretty destined to dig this show. It’s just so clever and interesting and fun to watch!

That said, I wasn’t really shipping anything on the show yet. I like all the characters but nothing leapt out for me romantically. But then they introduced Trevor, and the thing is, Adam Scott is my weakness. If he exists on a show, I can’t help but ship him with somebody, and I have loved his and KBell’s chemistry together in other shows (Party Down! VMars!). I’m not proud of it, but my mind immediately went there.

Bottom line is, I know the show’s not going to go there, and I know Trevor is literally the worst, but I can’t help but want all the enemies-to-lovers, bickery fic for them.

Sidenote: Not that interested in actual AUs (as opposed to just like, canon divergence) for this fandom. The universe is so interesting on its own!

Any sort of stuck together/trapped in an enclosed space tropefic would be great-- especially if they start to have feelings for each other.

Mad Men - Peggy Olson/Stan Rizzo

I love and miss this show so much. It was so smart and made me feel so many things, and in truth, Peggy Olson is one of my favorite characters in all of fiction.

Peggy and Stan is such a great ship, to me, and one I was on board with from the very beginning. Omitting his boorish behavior early on, once they established a rapport, they were such equals, and he seemed to respect her so much, and vice versa. They got on each other’s nerves and knew how to push each other’s buttons, but that’s just because they connected so well and really got each other.

What are things like now that Peggy and Stan are working together and being together (and possibly living together)? It’s got to be frustrating at times but worth it in the end, right?

I absolutely adore the time period where they’re basically phone buddies. Maybe an AU where they get together earlier in the series, during that time? How their phone conversations evolve from discussing work to discussing everything to falling for each other (or realizing they already had)? Phone sex (or getting ever-so-close to it before realizing they’re in the office and it’s inappropriate) is a-okay here too.

In the same vein, epistolary fic could be really fun to play around with here. Maybe a story told through a series of interoffice memos, messages, notes in the margins of copy pitches and along the edges of spec art?

Hands down one of the funniest things about tlh Valgrace is how badly Leo wants them to be in some sort of imbalanced rivalry/prince and stablehand situation but Jason just. Being way too nice for it to work?
