Morbi Bridge Wikipedia:- On 30 October 2022 at Morbi Bridge, at 6:40 pm, Julto Pul, a 143-year-old suspension bridge in Morbi, Gujarat, India, which intersects the Machchhu River fell down. tons of people were on the bridge at the time, 135 people have been reported dead since, more than 180 people have been rescued, and still many people are missing. Morbi Bridge Wikipedia
Julto Pul (in Morbi, Gujarat) is a 230.429-meter (756.00 ft) long walker bridge built during British rule in India in the 19th century, and it was inaugurated on 20 February 1879. Sir Waghji Thakor (who ruled Morbi till 1922), was simulated by the pioneer influence and sure to construct the bridge, an "Artistic and Technological Marvel" of that time, to connect Darbargadh Palace with Nazarbag Palace (the residences of the then royalty).
Morbi Bridge Collapse
On 30 October 2022, a suspension bridge in the city of Morbi, Gujrat, India, which crossed the river collapsed. The accident happened just 4 days after the bridge was restarted following repairs. The bridge had been closed for repairs for 6 months. The bridge is possessed by Morbi municipality, which signed a contract with the private trust Oreva for maintenance, repair, and operations a few months prior. The bridge had been closed for 2 years before the occurrence and it was reopened after renovation on 26 October 2022 on the occasion of Gujarati New Year. #GujaratBridgeCollapse | Gujarat Minister Harsh Sanghavi doesn't respond as NDTV questions why there was no fitness certificate for the bridge which collapsed in Morbi, killing over 140 people. pic.twitter.com/lGhmKyhaxh — NDTV (@ndtv) October 31, 2022
Morbi Bridge History
The bridge was 1.25 meters broad and spanned 233 meters, and it was designated to give a special identity to Morbi using the newest technology available in those days in Europe.
Morbi Bridge Collapse Cause
Member of Parliament Mohanbhai Kalyanjibhai Kundariya (an Indian politician) said that he believed the cause of the bridge collapse was overloading. Mr. Vijay Goswami, who was a visitor from Ahmedabad told reporters that "Before leaving the place, we alerted the on-duty staff to stop people from trembling the bridge, and hours later, our fears become true as the bridge eventually collapsed.
Rescue Operations
As per the latest information, more than 135 people lost their lives in the mishappening and some are still missing, and more than 180 people have been rescued. Narendra Modi (India's Prime Minister) announced on Twitter PMO India that he would be giving 200,000 rupees to family members that have lost a member in the incident, and the wounded victims would receive 50,000 rupees. Amit Shah (Union Home Minister of India) also has given condolences. PM @narendramodi has announced an ex-gratia of Rs. 2 lakh from PMNRF for the next of kin of each of those who lost their lives in the mishap in Morbi. The injured would be given Rs. 50,000. — PMO India (@PMOIndia) October 30, 2022 Also. Read About:- Who is Faisal Vawda Second Wife? Read the full article

THE SHRADDHANJALI EXPERIENCE - A TRIBUTE TO THE LIVES LOST
Interactive Installation
Smritivan Earthquake Memorial & Museum, Bhuj, India, 2022
About
Interactive tech studio Craftech360 commissioned generative artist Function Store and myself to create software for an immersive installation for a Memorial museum in Bhuj, India.
The 2001 Bhuj Earthquake took lives of almost 13,000 people in the region. The new Smritivan Earthquake Museum commemorates this loss and focuses on the renewal that comes after every storm.
The Shraddhanjali Experience is an interactive dome projection that invites visitors into to pay a tribute to their loved ones. Utilizing multiple Kinect sensors, the installation reacts to gestures of prayer which are able to energize the souls on the walls and burst them into stardust to ascend towards the dome apex and join the collective soul.

Technical
I created a software in TouchDesigner that uses Kinect point cloud data to create images of souls, performs gesture recognition and generates real-time visual effects (glow and particle animation) based on the input from the visitors.
Utilizing Kinect pointcloud data to create particle animation
A glow appears around palms when a person does namaste gesture
The figure bursts into particles after a certain time that the person has been praying
As the final stage of the real time animation, letters that have been floating in the air align into names of people who died in the earthquakes. The names are pulled randomly from sadly long text files provided by the installation team and are displayed in 3 languages Gujarati, Hindi and English. The language switch is signalled to the installation from the projection server through TCP protocol.
Gujarati and Hindi letters align into names
Together with Function Store we've provided the team with a configurable project whose parameters could be adjusted on site. We've produced hardware specifications for the installation, documented it and consulted Craftech360 on the deployment.
Parameter interface
Content previewed on the dome 3D model
Challenges
One technical challenge for me was the fact that Kinect would be placed at floor level filming the person from that perspective. The particle figure had to be filmed by a virtual camera from another angle. For the glow effect I utilised a component that was using screen space UV coordinates of hands. However, I could not use UV coordinates as provided by Kinect, since they would not align with the figure filmed from camera's perspective. As a solution, I wrote a Python script that recalculated Kinect space UVs into Camera space UVs using camera rotation matrices.

A large number of Twitter accounts that followed Biden's appear to have been created exclusively for that purpose. And a large number of the users are located in small towns in rural India—in places where English-speakers are rare, and from handles run by people who don't speak English as their first language, nor appear to be genuinely invested in American politics.
A Zenger News investigation reveals that Biden's increasing social media footprint in India came from the country's infamous troll farms boosting his candidacy.
Kamala Harris's ethic heritage is in part rooted in India, but her share of Indian and apparently Indian followers is far lower, about 0.12 percent.
Sock Puppet Sweatshop
Some of the operators who worked on the campaign spoke at length about how propaganda agencies in New Delhi and Mumbai activated a widely distributed troll network to amplify Biden's campaign impact on Twitter.
In discussions over the Telegram app, Harshit Patel and Yajpal Yadav discussed the part they played.
Patel runs a small cybercafé near the railway station at Umbergaon, a small town four hours north of Mumbai near the Maharashtra-Gujarat interstate border. From 8:00 am to 8:00 pm, he scans IDs of customers and allots them a PC for twenty rupees an hour. On the side, he and his Photoshop-savvy wife Sejal make photocopies, print ID cards, do small design jobs and offer lamination services.
"This was started as an internet café by my father in the late 1990s," Patel said, speaking in Gujarati-accented Hindi. "Back then, men came in mostly for chatting in IRC [Internet Relay Chat] rooms and surfing porn. It was brisk business. But then internet became so cheap and everyone got smartphones and business petered out. We had to rely on passengers asking to print railway tickets, fill up online forms, and get documents photocopied. But that didn't even cover the costs of maintaining the PCs and paying the electricity bill. Things changed in 2012–13 when [Narendra] Modi started his campaign for prime minister. And this became my main business."
What Patel means by "this" is the business of running a troll farm after his shutters go down at 8:00 p.m.—which is 10:30 a.m. in New York and 7:30 a.m. in California.
Four of his employees, young men who live in the neighborhood, take their stations at long desks that line two walls of the tiny shop, and open up task sheets assigned to them. A Google Doc tells each one of them who to follow, who to retweet, what to retweet and what comments to leave on specific posts.
Using aliases—each worker controls several hundred—they schedule tweets, check engagement stats and, at the close of their shifts, fill up a spreadsheet with their analytics from the previous day.
Started mostly to serve the 2014 Narendra Modi campaign, India's troll farm business is now one of the most decentralized and robust in the world. They offer nearly anything to paying customers, according to Patel: fake news, Photoshopped images, support and "hate" campaigns, and even incitements of mob violence.

ShareChat’s TikTok rival Moj sees massive surge in downloads
By: Tech Desk | Updated: July 5, 2020 7:08:11 pm
ShareChat’s Moj App has seen a massive surge in downloads (Source: Moj App/Play Store)
ShareChat launched Moj, a social video-sharing platform earlier this week. With anti-China sentiment prevailing due to tension on the Indo-China border and the government banning 59 Chinese apps including TikTok, ShareIt, etc, Moj registered over one million downloads within a week. Similar to the popular app TikTok, Moj allows users to create short videos with special effects, stickers, and emoticons.
There is a massive surge in downloads since the ban on TikTok resulting in demand for alternate Indian apps. Moj has received mostly positive ratings resulting in a 4.2 rating on Play Store after over eight thousand reviews.
The app has been made to cater to the Indian audience as it supports 15 languages including Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, and others. It does not support the English language.
The newly-launched app lets the users create 15-second videos using different filters, stickers, emoticons, etc. It also has a lipsyncing function to recreate movie dialogues.
The app is also a rival to Chingari, a TikTok-like Indian app. Chingari app has over 10 million downloads after three weeks of launch and a 3.9 rating on Google Play Store. Over one lakh users have reviewed the app so far. One of the founders of the video-sharing platform, Sumith Ghosh revealed that the app recorded over 5,33,170 users live in a period of three minutes at one point.
Amidst, the surge in downloads of Indian apps, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday launched the Aatmanirbhar Innovation Challenge, inviting India’s tech and community to create an Aatmanirbhar App Ecosystem. It also has plans to promote the existing Indian apps and platforms in categories like E-Learning, Work from home, gaming, business, entertainment, etc.
Earlier the Ministry stated they banned the 59 Chinese apps because were “prejudicial to sovereignty and integrity of India, defence of india, security of state and public order.”

‘Garibi Chupao’: Sena says PM Modi hiding poverty during Trump’s visit - india news
The Shiv Sena on Monday accused the Narendra Modi government of trying veil poverty by building a wall to “hide homes of the poor” along the route President Donald Trump is scheduled to take in Ahmedabad during his visit next week.Referring to former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi’s slogan to eradicate poverty, an editorial in the Sena mouthpiece ‘Saamana’ said, “There was a time when the slogan ‘Garibi Hatao’ was criticised, but it appears the new agenda is Garibi Chupao.”Saamana also criticised the preparations in Gujarat to welcome Trump, calling it a remnant of India’s ‘Slave Mentality’ from the time when the country was ruled by British, and would gear up for a visit of a king or queen.“Trump’s visit is scheduled for three hours, but the preparations for it are costing the country’s exchequer Rs 100 crores, including making of 17 roads in Ahmedabad, and building walls on these roads,” Saamana has said.It has also questioned if Trump or the US would pay for these walls, and if they will be pulled down after Trump’s visit, or will continue to “choke the poor who live behind it”?It also said that the American’s President’s visit would not help boost the rupee. “Trump’s visit to India is not going to stop the value of the rupee from falling, or put an end to poverty.”The editorial also took a swipe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, calling him the “biggest endorser of development”. Saamana said, “Narendra Modi is the biggest endorser of development. Nobody developed the country before him, and no one will develop the country after him. When he was the Chief Minister of Gujarat for 15 years, and the Prime Minister of India for five years, why has it come to this that poverty needs to be concealed?”Saamana called the ‘Kem Cho Trump’ event, planned in Ahmedabad part of a political understanding between Trump and Modi. It said, “Before the American presidential elections, Kem Cho Trump event is being organised because USA has a large population of Gujaratis.”In Ahmedabad, Trump is scheduled to visit the Sabarmati Ashram and take part in a roadshow with Modi. The two leaders will also inaugurate a new cricket stadium in Motera and address a gathering with an expected audience of over a lakh people. Read the full article

New Delhi [India] October 20 (ANI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi pleasantly surprised many on October 19, during his interaction with beneficiaries of Pradhan Mantri AawasYojna in Maharashtra, when he broke into chaste Marathi. No sooner did the PM finish the interaction that various media houses began to speculate the roots of Modi's near perfect Marathi. Some media houses linked it to Modi's close association with top RSS leader Laxmanrao Inamdar 'Vakil Saheb' (who Modi named during the interaction, referring to his origins in Satara) and subsequent interactions with Mohan Bhagwat in Gujarat. The real story of PM Modi's conversant Marathi has a much simpler and more benign origin. Sources close to PM Modi revealed that Narendra Modi picked up Marathi during his days as a RSS Pracharak, when he used to stop over for meals at the residence of the Bhate family, based in the Calico Mills area in Gujarat's Ahmedabad. The Bhate family was based near Behrampura in Ahmedabad, which locals also refer to as the Calico Mills area, due to the presence of one of the earliest textile mills in Ahmedabad. Like all Pracharaks, Modi's role too involved close interaction with local families. Due to that, he would closely interact with the Bhate family, particularly over meals. Since the Bhate family traced their roots to Maharashtra, they would talk in Marathi in front of Modi, who would gradually pick up the language. In fact, the Bhate family and Modi had an informal arrangement of sorts that they would serve Modi food only when Modi asked for it in Marathi. In the same neighborhood that the Bhate family resided in, lived another family with multi-ethnic roots. In that family, there was a small girl who was proficient in six languages owing to the fact that her mother was a Bengali, father a Malayali but all inhabitants of Ahmedabad (hence, Gujarati) that lived in a locality that spoke predominantly Marathi, including a close friendship with the Marathi speaking Bhate family. Taking inspiration from this girl's ease in being conversant in roughly six languages Narendra Modi continued to interact in Marathi, albeit in a rudimentary fashion at first but gradually, he became confident enough to make a promise to this girl that whenever they would meet, Marathi would be the language of choice when they would interact. Later on, Modi was sent to Vadodara for RSS work. Vadodara, with a strong influence of the Gaekwad dynasty had a strong Marathi presence. This sharpened Modi's Marathi. In fact, he also interacted with the founder of the Bhartiya Mazdoor Sangh Dattopant Thengadi in Marathi. What surprised many on October 19, when PM interacted in Marathi came as no surprise to those that knew the story of Narendra Modi, the RSS Pracharak, that picked up a language from the by-lanes of the Mill areas of Ahmedabad. Opinion: 'Modi-fied' Gujarat Polls 'Trumps' all
Going by the outcome of Gujarat exit polls, pollsters are indicating a clear majority for BJP in the state. It gives a fair assessment of the outcome, none denying the fact that BJP is set to form the government in Gandhinagar. Many political pundits and politicians who doubted BJP’s victory are bound to be surprised with these projections. The perception was and is that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is fighting the toughest electoral battle of his life to retain Gujarat, to maintain “Gujarat Model” which he sold to win over elections after election since 2014 General Elections. This was not a battle between Congress and BJP, it was Modi vs the rest.
This was not a battle between Congress and BJP, it was Modi vs the rest.
×
Angry Gujarat
No doubt, there was anger amongst different sections of Gujaratis’. The state population largely linked to the trader community, got shock after shock in the policies of Demonetisation and then rolling out of GST. When it hurts Gujarati’s pocket, they are bound to be angry. Though Patel’s which comprise 12 percent of Electorate traditionally vote for BJP. Even the tallest of their leader Keshubhai Patel who formed his own outfit, “Gujarat Parivartan Party” couldn’t wean them away from the BJP.
In the current context, mishandling of Patel movement for reservation by Anandiben Patel and later by Vijay Rupani Government did alienate young population of the community. Una incident of attack on four Dalits skinning the carcasses of dead cow in Mota Samadhiyala village of Gir Somnath district did hurt 7 percent of caste population as many of them were in the business of skinning dead animals for a living. On the leaderless soil of politically fertile castes, anger translated into the emergence of new Turks Hardik Patel a Patidar leader, Jignesh Mewani a Dalit leader and Alpesh Thakor, a Rajput and OBC leader. They became the symbol of anger of their respective communities and, thus, raged a war against BJP.
On the leaderless soil of politically fertile castes, anger translated into the emergence of new Turks Hardik Patel a Patidar leader, Jignesh Mewani a Dalit leader and Alpesh Thakor, a Rajput and OBC leader.
×
Congress virtual strategy a me too
The opposition Congress built their strategies around these scenarios. Cyber army of Congress IT cell camping at Ahmedabad closely monitored by 15 AICC office bearers were trying to do what BJP did in 2014 General elections on social media, create content, pass on to volunteers share and flood the cyberspace. They picked up from a Facebook post by one of Hardik Patel’s supporter, engineering student Sagar Savaliya, who wrote: “Vikas Gando Thayo Che” (with the photo of wheels behind a crashed bus) meaning Development has gone crazy. This created a great traction on social media and thus became the theme of Congress campaign in Gujarat.
They didn’t stop here, made Rahul Gandhi ask a question to Modi in the last leg of the campaign. Made him fly passenger class like a normal citizen standing in a queue, eat lots of Fafda’s and Jalebi at roadside Dhaba’s and above all, pronounced him as “Janeudhari Brahmin” by temple pilgrimages during the campaign. Not talking about likes of Mani Shankar Iyer as for one they do not mind their language. Congress made two major mistakes, propagating caste and adopting soft Hindutva in the run-up to Gujarat polling. It was a major shift in the grand old party which has been a victim of new cast based regional parties blocking the re-emergence of Congress to reclaim its base.
Congress made two major mistakes, propagating caste and adopting soft Hindutva in the run-up to Gujarat polling.
×
Modi’s art of turning anger into sympathy
It was natural for Narendra Modi to give lesser attention to his home state Gujarat compared to when he was the chief minister before 2014 because of his larger role as Prime Minister of the country. He never lost the base with state though. Hosting Chinese President Xi-Jinping and recently Japanese PM Shinzo Abe at Ahmedabad and increasing the Hight of Sardar Sarovar Dam. Prime Minister started focusing on Gujarat post-September this year with inauguration of Ahmedabad-Mumbai high speed (Bullet) train with the assistance of his friend Abe. Congress made a joke out of it and termed it a waste of money.
During his visit to Ahmedabad for this ceremony, Modi noticed potholes around the city, though administration patched roads taken By Modi and Abe during their stay. Narendra Modi gave 48 hours’ time to the administration for making roads pothole free which they did. Sensing the anger Modi made Finance Minister Arun Jaitley make amendments in GST to make it easy for traders and SMSE’s. He got CM Vijay Rupani to decrease VAT on petrol and diesel to give relief to commuters. To the Congress charges of “Vikas Gando Thayo Che” Modi touched the emotional chord by declaring “Hun Vikas chum” meaning I am development.

Launched 31-km long RoRo ferry service between Ghogha and Dahej that cut travel time from eight hours to one and half hour will benefit people working in the diamond-cutting and polishing hub of Surat. The first phase of voting was over by now. Congress was claiming the lead in this phase and few BJP leaders also were apprehensive. Before the second round of voting, Modi asked, “What did I do to deserve this” on Mani Shankar Iyer’s “Neech” comment during his campaign. Throughout he spoke in Gujarati. Reminded people how he used to be part of that area when he was in Gujarat. Made that connect with the masses of Gujarat. On congress’s “Janeudhari Brahmin” tactic Modi raked up Mani Shankar Iyer dinner with former Pakistani former Foreign Secretary and other diplomats.
Former PM Manmohan Singh and Former COAS Deepak Kumar were in presence in this dinner meeting. This was the kind of the first instance wherein Prime Minister accused other nation, Pakistan of muddling in Gujarat elections. Pakistan had to clarify officially that they do not have any role in domestic politics of India, but it played well. Many in Gujarat did not perceive it well for Congress. End of the campaign was the most dramatic. Denied permission for a road show in Ahmedabad, Modi holding the door bar of Seaplane did a River Show on Sabarmati Riverfront.
Any Amdavadi, Gujarati or for that matter Indian would have felt proud to see this happening on Sabarmati which use to be a nullah of drains till 2005, emotionally. On polling Day standing in the queue after dedicating INS Kalvari to the nation in Arabian sea Mumbai. Taking a walk near the poll station and while returning waving to crowd from his SUV, inviting Congress to charge Chief Election commissioner working as Prime Ministers PS. This war will go on but Gujarat chapter is closed for now. Those in doubts will be clearer on 18th December by 10:30 AM.
One thing is clear, Modi’s magic or Modi Election Winning machine is still intact. He is the leader who knows the pulse of people, engage with them through social media, Mann Ki Baat, Namo App, speeches. He knows when to Bow as he did after demonetisation, seek time for hardships. It is that connect which makes Modi the leader whom people relate, trust and believe.

New Post has been published on http://www.visionmp.com/rahul-gandhi-promptly-admonished-aiyar-prompting-the-senior-leader-to-apologise/
Mani Shankar Aiyar spells trouble for Congress ahead of Gujarat poll, calls Modi 'neech'
New Delhi/Surat: Congress leader Mani Shankar Aiyar on Thursday set off a political firestorm when he called Prime Minister Narendra Modi a “neech kism ka aadmi” (a vile man), a remark the latter claimed was a casteist slur against him.
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi promptly admonished Aiyar, who has often courted controversy with his off-the-cuff comments, prompting the senior leader to apologise.
Modi, who was on campaign trail in the Patidar belt of Surat in poll-bound Gujarat, quickly seized on the comments that may prove potentially damaging for the Congress coming as it did on the last day of electioneering for the first phase of poll in the state on December 9, insisting he was targeted over his caste.
Modi said Aiyar’s remark was an “insult” to Gujarat as he once again sought to stir a sense of Gujarati pride among the voters.
“He (Modi) is ‘neech kism ka aadmi’ (a vile man) who has no ‘sabhyata’ (civility),” Aiyar said, attacking Modi after the latter accused the Congress of seeking votes in B R Ambedkar’s but trying to erase his contribution to nation building.
Modi quickly lapped up Aiyar’s comment to launch a scalding attack on the Congress leader and his party.
“Shriman (Mr) Mani Shankar Aiyar today said that Modi is of ‘neech’ (lower) caste and is ‘neech’ (vile). Is this not an insult to Gujarat?
“You called us donkey, you called us ‘gandi nali ka keeda’ (worm of a dirty drain), you called us ‘maut ka saudagar’ (merchant of death), you said I am of ‘neech jaati’ (lower caste man) and ‘neech’. But we will live according to our ‘sanskars’ (values),” Modi said, launching an onslaught against Congress leaders who called him names in the past.
“This is a Mughal mentality where if such a person (who comes from a humble background) wears good clothes in a village, they have a problem,” he said.
Modi said he was following in the footsteps of Mahatma Gandhi who devoted his entire his life to the cause of poor and the “neech” (people of the lower strata of society”. “I am sitting with the ‘neech’ and will continue doing so even if you find me vile, my caste low,” he said.
Rahul Gandhi, who is all set to take over the mantle of the Congress president from his mother Sonia Gandhi midway through the Gujarat polls, ticked off Aiyar.
“BJP and PM routinely use filthy language to attack the Congress party. The Congress has a different culture and heritage. I do not appreciate the tone and language used by Mr Mani Shankar Aiyer to address the PM. Both the Congress and I expect him to apologise for what he said, Gandhi said on Twitter.
Chastised, Aiyar was soon on national television proffering clarification, insisting it was because of his poor understanding of Hindi language that he used the word, and tendering apology.
“I am told that ‘neech’ has many meanings, many connotations in Hindi, and if Mr Modi chooses to distort it to claim that it means low born, then all I can do is to apologise for having used a word that could be interpreted as low born. But that was not my intention at all and certainly not a part of my culture.
“Therefore, for the misinterpretation that can be given to the word, I extend my apologies, particularly since it is going to harm the Congress party’s interests in Gujarat,” he said.

Political Journey of BJP President Amit Shah
Amit Shah was born to Kusumben and Anilchandra Shah, an affluent Gujarati family in the year 1964 in Mumbai.
He lived and studied in his paternal village Maansa, Gujarat until the age of 16, when upon completion of his school education, his family shifted to Ahmedabad. As a young boy he was always inspired by the stories of the great patriots of the nation and dreamt of working for the progress of the motherland. He was especially inspired and influenced by the nationalist spirit and vision of Rashtriya Swayam Sevak Sangh (RSS) and became its active member in Ahmedabad. This was one act that was to change his life forever and set him on a momentous journey towards the leadership of the Bharatiya Janata Party.
After joining the RSS, Amit Bhai worked for the student’s wing of the RSS – the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad for over four years. It was during this period that BJP emerged as the political arm of RSS and Amit Bhai became a member of the party in 1984-85. His first assignment was that of a poll agent at Ahmedabad’s Naranpura ward, followed by secretaryship of the Naranpura ward. Successful completion of these missions earned him the higher responsibilities as National treasurer of BJYM and then as the State secretary and State Vice-President of Gujarat BJP. In these roles, he actively campaigned to expand the base of the young political party.
His abilities to keep his ear to the ground and establish deep and lasting connect with party workers enabled him to hone his organizational capabilities. These abilities came to fore and to the notice of people when as in charge of the Amhedabad city; he successfully handled mass mobilization of people in favour of the Ram Janambhoomi Movement and EktaYatra. The Ram Janambhoomi Movement resulted in a groundswell of support for BJP and drew tremendous response from Gujarat. These mass movements were followed by the Lok Sabha Elections in 1989, wherein he was entrusted with the task of managing the election campaign of BJP’s mass leader Shri L.K. Advani from Ahmedabad constituency. This was an association that would last for over two decades with Amit Bhai formulating electoral strategy for Shri Advani till the 2009 Lok Sabha polls. He was also the election in-charge of former Prime Minister Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee when he contested from Gandhinagar. Amit Bhai had earned a reputation for himself as an astute election manager.
The political upheaval in Gujarat during 1990 overturned established fortunes and BJP emerged as the principal and only opposition party to the Congress in the state. During this time, Amit Bhai, under the able guidance of Shri Narendra Modi the then Gujarat BJP’s Organisation Secretary, initiated and successfully completed the difficult but all important task of documenting party’s primary members across the state. This was a critical first step to garner the party’s strength and electoral prowess. The subsequent electoral victories of the BJP in the state demonstrated the efficacy of harnessing and motivating its party workers in the pursuit of state leadership.
BJP’s first stint in political power in Gujarat was relatively short lived as the party that stormed into power in 1995 fell in 1997. Yet, during this short period, Amit Bhai, who was made the chairman of Gujarat State Financial Corporation, turned around the company and even got it listed on the Stock Exchanges. This was also Amit Bhai’s first foray into the election arena, as in the by- election that followed the fall of BJP government; he successfully contested assembly polls from Sarkhej winning the seat by a margin of nearly 25,000 votes. Realizing the pressing need to regain the confidence of voters and mandate from the people, Amit Bhai dedicated himself to the task of strengthening the party in the state. At the same time, he continued to discharge his duties as a MLA and even won from the same seat by over 1.30 lakh votes in 1998.
A key achievement of Amit Bhai’s political career was breaking the stranglehold of the Congress over Gujarat’s cooperative movement, which was a source of electoral strength and influence. In 1998, barring a single Cooperative Bank, all other cooperative institutions were controlled by the Congress. This was set to change as thanks to Amit Bhai’s political acumen and ability to carry people along, BJP started to win elections for cooperative banks, milk dairies, and agriculture market committees. These successive victories established BJP political strength and influence in rural and semi-rural areas. His success though was not limited to electoral affairs. Under his Chairmanship, the Ahmedabad District Cooperative Bank, the largest district cooperative bank in Asia – turned profitable in just one year. The bank also declared a dividend for the first time in a decade. Given his wide experience, and commendable success, Amit Bhai was made the national convener of BJP’s cooperative committee in 2001.
In 2002, as a prelude to the assembly elections, AmitBhai was made the co-organiser of the ‘Gaurav Yatra’. The party stormed into power in the state under Chief Minister Shri. Narendra Modi. This time too, Amit Bhai won his seat from the Sarkhej constituency for the third time in a row. This time, the margin of victory was even bigger at 1,58,036 votes. Amti Bhai was given the key ministries of Home, Transport, and Prohibition and his work as Gujarat Home Minister was much appreciated. His popularity and connect with people increased with time. In 2007, Sarkhej electorate again showered its blessings on Amit Bhai with a victory margin of a massive 2,32,832 votes. He returned to the state cabinet and was given responsibility of a number of key portfolios including Home, Transport, Prohibition, Parliamentary Affairs, Law, and Excise.
His policies were appreciated by many as going beyond the norms. An avid chess player himself, Amit Bhai became Chairman of Gujarat State Chess Association and introduced chess on a pilot project basis in Ahmedabad’s government schools. This resulted in making students more alert, raised their concentration levels and improved their problem solving abilities. In 2007, Shri Narendra Modi and AmitBhai became Chairman and Vice Chairman of Gujarat State Cricket Association, respectively and ended the 16-year old Congress domination. During this period, he was also Chairman of Ahmedabad Central Board of Cricket.
The year 2010 was one of unprecedented challenges. The UPA government under Congress slapped charges of a fake encounter against Amit Bhai and he was imprisoned. His innocence was vindicated later when the Gujarat High Court observed that there was no prima facie case against Amit Shah. The Congress conspiracy met the same fate, as did earlier electoral encounters with Amit Bhai. He was released on bail within 90 days and the politics of vendetta was badly defeated. Later, a special CBI Court also absolved AmitBhai of all charges on the ground that the case was “politically motivated”.
Amit Bhai’s electoral victories continued unabated. In 2012, he won his fifth straight victory from the newly carved Narayanpura assembly segment. This time he won by over 60,000 votes despite the delimitation reducing the number of voters to a mere one fourth of the original number. The party recognized his electoral talent and in 2013 when he was made General Secretary of the BJP ahead of the crucial Lok Sabha polls in 2014. This was a high point in his long and arduous political journey. There was little time for celebrations though as Amit Bhai realized that he had the huge task of leading BJP to a comprehensive victory in the general elections. As one who was known as a master of electoral mathematics with an eye for smallest of data points, AmitBhai knew that a win in Uttar Pradesh was the key to taking power at the Centre. He spent the next year visiting every nook and corner of the state, energizing and motivating party workers, and pushing BJP’s development agenda along with BJP’s PM Candidate Shri Narendra Modi’s vision. The results were spectacular with BJP and its allies winning 73 of the 80 seats in the state. With this big push from Uttar Pradesh, BJP crossed the 272-mark in Lok Sabha with a majority on their own strength.
The BJP recognized the commitment, hard work and organizational capabilities of Amit Bhai and made him the President of the party in 2014. With more power comes more responsibility. In less than one year of taking over as BJP’s National President, Amit Bhai travelled to each and every state in the country to push the party’s ideology and enlarge party membership. The results of this drive were startling. He made BJP world’s largest political party with over 10 crore members. His resolve to strengthen BJP did not end at making it world’s largest party as he initiated number of programs to spread party ideology and its mass connect. One of such programs was “Mahasampark Abhiyan” aimed at engaging newly acquired members in party’s programs.
The combination of PM Modi’s leadership and Amit Bhai’s well-crafted election strategies resulted in BJP winning four of the five assembly elections held during first year of his tenure as party president. While the party had its chief ministers in Maharashtra, Jharkhand and Haryana, it formed coalition government in Jammu & Kashmir.
Despite his hectic schedule and numerous public engagements, Amit Bhai loves to unwind by listening to classical music, playing chess and watching a game of cricket. He has keen interest in “stage performances” also as he himself performed on several occasions during his student life.
