The Proving Grounds XXIII Promo!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Eorzeans and guests from near and far, the time once again is upon us for the running of the Proving Grounds! Only a few suns separate you from the bone-crunching, blood-spilling, skull-shattering feast for the eyes that only the premiere venue of violent glory can bring! A truly unique night in ‘Grounds history is set to unfold staring old faces in new roles, new challengers hunting for glory, and hungry veterans ready to grasp their first Rosewood Dagger! All under the care of a very special guest Games Master that you won’t want to miss!
The night will start with the man recently disqualified from taking part in a dagger match, Eigengrau Hatasashi face off against former Games Master turned fighter, I’llia Mitnu in her debut as a combatant. Will the fan-wielding xaela dancer take steps towards redemption, or will his opponent be there to announce his defeat herself?
Next we have perhaps the most lopsided weight class matchup in the history of the Proving Grounds; Tiny-Terror-turned-guard-turned-fighter Scorching Orchard and her mouthful of distressingly sharp teeth will be taking on none other than the champion herself, Bremwyda Abylnpfefwyb! As only the second lalafell to take the sands, Orchard is going to have an actual mountain to climb as her first trial, but the sea wolf has been on a losing streak since their change of weapons. It’s anyone’s match!
The third match of the pre-lims marks the return of the De’uden’s feral fighter ‘Dagger’ and his beast-like savagery against newly minted fighter Den Ashfell! While it’s always good to see fresh meat take the sands, one can only hope he can manage against one of the most aggressive creatures involved in the Proving Grounds, and her fighter!
And the last of the early matches brings us the battle-smith A’lera Tristelle in her second appearance in the Proving Grounds aiming to smash expectations against long-toothed veteran and recent Rosewood Dagger winner Delesta Dorel and her punishing cesti! A pair of blunt-weapon specialists set for a proper bruising contest to usher in the semi-finals can’t be missed!
Don’t find yourself left listening to others tell the tales of glory, come watch the victors claim their glory as it happens! Bring your friends, your kids, even your pets! It’s a blood sport for the whole family! This has been Pressed Ham encouraging you all to come take in the bounty of blood on ((Saturday, May 28th at 8 PM EST / 5 PM PST)) in the 1st Ward of the Goblet, South of the Brimming heart!

Hickey Prank
Concept: another prank on ruel but instead of pregnancy it’s the hickey prank since I love the idea of pranking him and making him freak out before being all cute with him. Like usual dm me or whatnot for a request. Also don’t worry I’ll be doing a pt. 2 for him doing the prank as revenge (Sorry that this is so long lmao, do y’all like long imagines? Or should I shorten them in the future) Hope you enjoy :)
“What’s going on whores? Y’all requested I do another prank on Rueloff, so I decided that the pregnancy prank wasn’t enough, it’s time to up the game. And you know what that means... HICKEY TIME” I screech at my camera sitting in front of me with a giant smile.
I continue my intro and what I’m going to do, before introducing Coco as my professional makeup artist for the fake hickey, both of us laughing since we know it’s going to be a good video. We joke around and film while she starts applying the eyeshadows on my neck.
“Honestly I’m so good at this, like I could be a professional. Ruel could never leave a hickey as good as me, like fuck real ones, we only rocking fakes ones from here on out bitches” Coco cheers as I laugh. Trust her to be the only person to ever say something like that, but I mean she is the best Van Dijk for a reason.
“Wait am I doing one, or like one that’s more noticeable than the others with a few scattered around? Like I guess my question is what does my brother do so we can do something he’d know wasn’t his” she questions, fake gagging as she thinks about Ruel giving me a hickey. I instantly burst out laughing, knowing she’s gonna hate what I’m about to say.
“Okay welllll you see he doesn’t usually leave any on my neck because of paps and fans trying to take pics, so he’ll know they aren’t his if they’re above my collarbones” I laugh out, covering my face at my confession, feeling it heat up under my hands. Coco chokes on air at my statement, not wanting to know what her little brother does in his free time with me.
“Wow I definitely did not want to know that but I’ll do one more noticeable one with a few light ones scattered around” she mumbles, continuing on with her makeup application on me, as I turn off the camera, deciding to just start filming again once it’s time. I put on one of my Spotify playlists, both of us just singing along and talking about how we think he’s going to react. I start to fiddle with my promise ring as my hands start to sweat, before deciding to just take it off and set it on the nightstand, making a mental note to put it back on before we start the prank.
“Honestly like I’m really not sure about what he’s going to do, like he’s so unpredictable. The fans never see it but he can get pretty angry sometimes when it has to do with people he loves.” Coco muses while setting the makeup and making sure it looks like it’s my skin and not super fake, knowing he’ll really stare at it to see if he’s just losing his mind. I ponder over what she says, genuinely unsure of what his reaction will be since it’s basically me tricking him into thinking I’m cheating.
“Yeah, I definitely get what you mean. I’m not sure if he’s going to be really sad and hurt or if he’s going to be really hurt but fucking pissed with me” she hums in agreement, knowing that there’s no way to be sure of his reaction, but just hope that he doesn’t lose it completely.
“Well no matter what I’m here, so as soon as shit goes too far , I’ll come down to make my appearance to confirm that it’s a prank since he will still be worked up a little even after you show him it comes off with water” she says, confirming our plan for when we tell him it’s just a prank. We both go around the house setting up the cameras, so that we can get footage in any of the rooms we may go into, during what we assume is going to be him pacing through the rooms completely pissed with me.
“Okay guys, we’re back and ready for this prank! Ruel texted me saying he’s on his way back from the studio, I picked up Coco today so he will have no clue anyone’s here but me since her car is at her apartment” I say to the main camera in our bedroom, placing it so that it gets a full view of the room if we come in here.
“Get ready bitches because it’s show time” Coco smirks at the camera. We both leave the room and I take her into the music room, where Ruel has his instruments and music sheets everywhere. I tell her to just hang in here while everything happens so that she can still hear it all, but will be out of sight. We both highfive and I leave the room to head downstairs to the living room, nervous for what’s about to happen. As I settle on the couch and pull a blanket on me, I hear the jingle of keys as the front door opens, before hearing footsteps head to where I am.
“Hey baby, sorry I got back a little late today. Do anything fun while I was gone?” Ruel mumbles, placing a kiss to the side of my head, before sitting next to me and taking off his shoes to carelessly toss them next to the coffee table. I lean my head onto his chest as he wraps his arm around my shoulders, throwing a quick smirk to the camera hidden in here.
“Nope, saw Coco earlier and had lunch with her, that was why I was really slow at texting you back earlier” I explain looking up at him as he nods his head and listens to my explanation. He grabs my hand and starts playing with my fingers, before taking another close look.
“Where’s your promise ring? You literally never take it off” he questions, completely throwing me off since I forgot I had taken it off when my hands started to get sweaty, but realizing it adds more to the whole hickey thing.
“Huh I must’ve taken it off when cooking this morning and just never put it back on, I’ll put it on once we head upstairs later” I answer, trying to act as calm as possible as he stared me straight in the eyes with an unwavering look.
“You never take it off? Why are you starting to now?” He decides to question me further, making me try my hardest to hold back a laugh, knowing he’s falling right into my plan. I give him a soft smile and kiss his cheek before cuddling into him even more, feeling his arms tighten around me.
“I think because it was a little messy I didn’t want to get anything on it, so I just slipped it off and placed it upstairs” I said trying to convince him, seeing him give me an unconvinced look from the corner of my eyes. I turn to look at him before deciding it’s time to get everything in motion for the big freakout.
“I missed you today” I whisper out, my chin on his chest as I look up into his green eyes, smiling at the soft love filled look he gives me. He leans down and presses his lips to mine, before lifting me up and placing me across the couch, one hand rests on my hip while the other rests on the side of my neck as he hovers over me. I try to keep everything as pg as possible, not wanting to have to cut anything out of the video since this is the buildup to everything. He’s resting between my legs as he starts to kiss around my jaw before slowly making his way down to my neck on one side, before moving to the other side that holds the hickey.
“what the fuck?” He whispers, completely freezing all movement as he stares at my neck. I turn my head to slightly cover it, giving him my most innocent look. I rest my hand on his cheek as he stares at me with complete shock on his face. He pushes away from me and stands up turning on all the lights he can in the living room, since I had it all a little dim so he wouldn’t see right away.
“Stand up.” He slightly snaps out, looking at me with an emotionless face. I hesitantly stand, keeping my hair over my neck and my chin pointed a little lower than usual. He rolls his eyes, before firmly but carefully grabbing my head and lifting it up, completely causing my neck to be exposed.
“Ruel what’re you doing? Stop it” I mumble out, pushing his hands away from my neck as he tilts my head to the side. He watches me with a look of pure betrayal, causing me to freeze up for a second at the pain he was feeling. He lets out a scoff and rolls his eyes, pacing around for a couple of seconds before turning back to me.
“Are you fucking cheating on me? Who the fuck did that?” He hisses out, eyes going from their beautiful green, to almost black. I give him a fake nervous glance, wringing my hands out in front of me before fake stuttering a reply to him.
“R-ruel you did that? They’re from last night” I say trying to reason with him as I reach for his hands, feeling him rip them away from my grip. He gives me a look of complete horror, that I’d dare try to pin this on him.
“We both know damn well I didn’t do that, I never leave them where they’re visible. Especially not fucking more than one. I can’t believe you’d do this to me” he spits out with so much pain that I start to debate whether or not to stop the prank already. Before I can tell him the truth he takes off upstairs towards our bedroom, causing me to run up after him to see what he’s going to do. He throws open the closet and starts grabbing clothes, throwing them onto the bed. In complete panic I jump onto him and stop him from grabbing more clothes.
“Wait Ruel baby stop, calm down for a second please.” I plead, trying to get him to stop so I can tell him it was just a prank and that I would never cheat on him. I guess he decided to take the angry and hurt route rather than the sad one. He shakes me off of him and tosses me onto the bed so that I land in the pile of clothes. He starts throwing his hands in the air in an exasperated manner, trying to figure out what to say.
“Don’t fucking call me baby, I’m not your baby anymore. You cheated on me, after everything we’ve ever promised to each other, you went and fucking cheated. Who was he? Since obviously he can do more for you than I can” he venomously hisses out, with hurt clear in his eyes, the beautiful green eyes that are starting to get misty with unshed tears.
“Ruel I didn’t cheat on you, give me a second to explain, please I love you and I promise it’s not what you think.” I try to reason with him grabbing his hand and pulling him to sit on the bed next to me. He pulls away from me but remains seated, running his hands down his face.
“Theres no explaining. I can see your neck, I know what it is... you never loved me” he chokes out, a single tear falling down his face. I reach out to wipe it away, knowing nows the time to stop this prank, it’s gone farther than I wanted. I never wanted it to go this way, I truly didn’t think it’d go this way or I wouldn’t have done it.
“I love you. You know I love you and that I’d never cheat on you. No other guy compares to you. Bubs it’s just a prank, I promise it’s just a prank.” I whisper to him, watching his head whip towards me with a glare. He stands up and starts pacing around, making me anxious on his reply.
“It looks real. I don’t fucking believe you. Your ring was off, you weren’t replying earlier, Coco never made a post of you together, and the hickey didn’t come off at all and when I rubbed it. Why’re you lying to me!” He shouts out, completely hurt to believe me, veins in his neck slightly popping out from his distress.
“Ruel follow me.” I mumble out, walking to the bathroom as he follows me, still in view of the camera frame. He stands against the bathroom door as I wet a wash cloth and hand it to him. He holds it and stares at me incredulously.
“I’m not touching you nor am I going to wipe your neck. We should just breakup now to get it over with” he deadpans, still too angry to believe me. I honestly can’t blame him, Coco did an amazing job making them realistic and smudge proof. I feel my heart sting at him wanting to break up, but I just roll my eyes before grabbing his hand and using it to drag the washcloth down my neck. He stands there in silence, moving my hand from his so that he can wiping at my neck, watching as the shades of red and purple slowly wash away. He sets the cloth on the counter before standing across from me and just staring at me, not saying a word.
“Are you going to breakup with me?” I mumble out, terrified at what this prank could have done. I need him, I should have known that this prank was too risky, especially when it comes to someone who puts their all into a relationship. Someone who’s biggest fear is getting cheated on or left behind. He drags his hands through his hair, giving me a slight glare before reaching out and tugging me into his arms.
“I want to kill you right now for doing this, where is she? I know Coco was a part of this prank since she used to make fake bruises to get out of pe in school.” He mutters into my neck, holding me tighter than ever. We both hear shuffling and turn our heads to see Coco standing there with a sheepish smile on her face, also not expecting this to have been the outcome.
“Hello dearest brother of mine, I love you” she says with a big grin, watching as he glares at her and walks into the bedroom. He picks up my ring on his nightstand and beckons me over to him, making Coco and I listen and walk to him. He grabs my hand and slides the ring back on, pulling me in and kissing the top of my head. I pull away and grab the camera, setting it up in front of the bed, as we sit down, ruel sitting in the middle of us.
“Well you guys that did not go as planned, or maybe it did? Like the point was to get a reaction, but I personally think it was a little too far. I hope you enjoy this wild ass prank video and you better like it, you guys almost cost me my whole ass relationship” I groan out to the camera, leaning my body against Ruels.
“You guys are all assholes, I honestly was about to have a heart attack. Not gonna lie I was about to go through your phone and find the guy so I could beat his ass, I’ve never been more angry than I was today” he states with a chuckle causing Coco and I to instantly lighten up, realizing that Ruel was fine now that he saw it was just a prank. I was truly scared this was going to affect our actual relationship.
“Honestly we didn’t think it’d go this far, it was supposed to be a simple prank, but as you can tell shit blew up” Coco states as all of us laugh and agree, knowing it was never the intention for this to all happen when we made the video, no one was supposed to actually get hurt.
“well guys that’s the end of this video and I love you all, don’t forget to leave a thumbs up and subscribe, also comment down below what you want to see next, but please spare my poor baby next time” I laugh out as Ruel nods his head vigorously, before giving me a kiss on the cheek. We all wave to the camera before shutting it off. Coco goes downstairs to shut the other ones off, before coming up to give us hugs and say goodbye, claiming this prank made her too tired to stay and hangout.
Ruel pulls me back on the bed with him, having me lean against the headboard as he lays with his chest against my back. I intertwine our fingers and rest them against his stomach, pressing a kiss to the top of his head. He turns his head and kisses my arm before tilting his head to look at me.
“I love you so much, I know you could never cheat on me, but seeing that made me so mad that I honestly couldn’t rationalize anything, like it looked so real” he says, with a small frown, upset with himself that he could even believe for a second that I’d cheat on him. I smile at him and give him a soft kiss, before pulling away to kiss his forehead.
“I can’t blame you, they looked real as fuck. Honestly it’s not your fault, I didn’t know what I’d do if I was in your place, like honestly I’d lose my shit. I’m sorry if it went too far bub” I mumble back, giving him a soft look, feeling terrible that he was in so much distress because of a prank. He laughs and presses his lips to mine, giving me a slow but love filled kiss, before pulling back to give me a smirk as I lay underneath him completely breathless. His smirk never fades as he reaches a hand up and caresses my cheek, before dragging it down to lightly tug on my bottom lip with his thumb.
“Don’t worry, it wasn’t too far. I think you did a perfect prank, but beware love, you’ve started a war. Trust me, karma is a bitch and she’s going to bite you in the ass soon” he smirks, causing me to roll my eyes at his dramatics.
I mean what’s the worst he can do?

Depth and Cultural Appropriation in Witchcraft
So I started reading Penczak’s Temple of Shamanic Witchcraft in order to see what was up. I already knew he was pretty low on the “Understanding Cultural Boundaries” scale, and was expecting to score out more advice than I would take in, but even early on in the book I was stopped by what he said.
After he became “...a little bored with witchcraft [and]...needed to explore other forms of mysticism, including shamanism” (pg. xvii), he “...found himself studying the rituals and lore of the Native American tribes.” Although he “...love[d] and respect[ed] them, Native American traditions didn’t touch [him] the way witchcraft did, so [he] kept looking”. (pg xviii).
Although this was a throwaway passage in an introduction, it kind of stuck with me. Witchcraft, the New Age era, and Neo-Paganism often butts heads against Native traditions in the least complementary (if you can call thievery “uncomplimentary”) way. I had always sort of wondered why- after all, most of how the New Age and Neo-Paganism movement in the US had started was derived in the slapped-together European tradition brought over from the witchcraft imported from Britain. So why were Native and Asiatic religions such prominent cultural inspirations for the longest time?
I wonder, almost, if it was a need for depth.
Hear me out. If you take out any religious aspects of the most basic, basic witchcraft, a lot of depth is lost. Sure, you can cook up a mean crystal collection, and become a gardening whiz with home-grown herbs, and have an excellent knowledge in sigils and symbols for every occasion, but you’re not facing the fabric of reality in the same way that, say, someone who regularly takes flying ointments in order to reshape themselves from the inside out would.
I won’t declare that one way is better than any other. But I would say that if you’re looking to entangle yourself in the physics of spirituality in a way that is not easily accessible in the same way that tarot decks are in a Barnes and Noble, you’re kind of out of luck. Nowadays, it’s not so hard to find a recommendation for an “advanced” title, whether it be a grimoire or someone’s in-depth study of a particular field, but it used to often be the case where the only way to get real, concrete information on how to deepen your relationship with the divine and your spirituality used to only be found in select, invite-only, initiation-only covens and groups.
At the same time as the rise of the New Age/Neo-Pagan era, however, I believe (if my understanding of the time frame is correct) that Native people were busy fighting for their right to their own religious practices.
I can and will declare that deprivation of the spirit is a genuine tragedy. I can and will declare that persons who are turning away or are disillusioned from their family’s religion deserve alternate outlets. But wow, is it a horrifically awful move to take practices and traditions from a population in crisis and turn around and repackage them for a population with all the same qualities as the oppressing power. I can see why someone might choose to do it, if they had no base respect for the people they’re taking from; having a system from which you can pull from in order to understand yourself and your place in the world gives grounding into spiritual practice. It informs how one acts, when, and the perspectives one carries while doing so.
But cultural appropriation is not respect.
Native religions, Asiatic religions that I still don’t understand the nuances of so I won’t try to be more specific, Jewish traditions, and African Diasporic traditions and religions are closed for a reason. They have a depth that is amazing to see and walk through, but respecting and loving them doesn’t mean looking into them without contact from the actual culture. It doesn’t mean recreating their rituals, even if you do it “perfectly” to the letter. If you want depth, if you need depth, there are open practices out there that can fulfill your spiritual needs. Promise. I pinky swear. And if for some reason you cannot find it at all, it is up to you to be responsible and care for your own needs before infringing on someone else’s spiritual rights.
And hey, maybe Penczak was getting genuine information and initiation from the source, and some tribe was genuinely interested in teaching him their ancestral ways. (If so, I would wonder why he didn’t clarify who he was working with to “research”, but I digress). Maybe he had a Native teacher. But, really, this isn’t about him specifically. I made this post mostly to contemplate how we got to this point in the first place- where Chakras are on oracle decks, oils and powders sold in crystals shops, and smudging bundles are $10.50 with an eagle feather included.
If you actually love a closed cultural practice, you will stand very far away, listen to their opinion on their culture before anyone else’s, and pay and tip them for their goods and services.
Blessings!
If you liked this post, consider a tip?

The 7th Prince (XII)
Author: kpopfanfictrash
Pairing: You / GOT7
Rating: PG
Word Count: 4,001
Genre: Royalty!AU
Summary: A land under a curse. Seven mysterious princes. A decision that will make or break the Kingdom. (idea from this post here, by@cyjsgirl)
Tumblr media
Continuing on, until reaching a curve in the wall. You slip beyond this. Hurrying down a stone-damp hallway, glancing over your shoulder as you leave. You’ve known your way around Quinque’s castle since the time you could walk. You know the in’s and out’s, know this path will lead past the kitchens. It exits into the gardens – which lead you back to Senary.
Rather than deter you, Jinyoung’s words have given you hope.
Tonight, you find your shadows.
Tonight, you find Mark.
And tonight, he tells you. Everything.
You slip from Quinque, edging the path in the garden so as not to disturb the gravel and stones beneath your feet. The sky is clear, aside from a sprinkling of clouds on the horizon. The light above you is gentle, made softer by the fact that tonight there’s no moon. Your body thrums with the energy of the night, savoring the fervor of magic and darkness around you.
As you round the corner, you can’t help but recall Jaebum’s revelation – his magic. The Prince of Unum has the same, for lack of a better term, symptoms as Jinyoung. It’s odd, Jaebum, with his magic and Jinyoung with his. What could it mean? Jinyoung with foresight, Jaebum with will, Youngjae with healing. Unable to see a connection, you wonder what else you’re missing.
Tiptoing across the lawn, you move quickly so the guards don’t catch you - breath catching, as you dart along the wall. You clutch the worn and weathered stones with your hands, small frown appearing on your lips. Perhaps you’ve been looking at this all wrong. Perhaps it’s not how Jinyoung, Jaebum and Youngjae are different – but how they’re similar.
All of them are princes, all of them are from the seven Kingdoms. All of them are gifted in magic, two in the same kind. All born after the curse took place, next in line for their thrones. Brow furrowing, you reach a break in the wall; the same one which leads to Senary and hesitating, you glance up the lawn to Quinque. It gleams before you, a hazy jewel in the night. Frown deepening, you consider Bambam and Yugyeom.
Wasn’t it just the other day, Yugyeom spoke of Bambam’s talent? His discernment of truth, understanding of people, the way he gathers information close to him. What if – here, you hesitate, mind leaping. What if it’s not just natural disposition, but something else? Slipping quietly through the hedge, your thoughts being to spin. You’ve heard of a power called Clarity. Only whispers of it, since it’s rare, but it’s said that the user cannot hear lies. More so, they can see to the very truth of the world, the absolute reality of things. They’re said to be incredibly powerful, especially in positions of leadership.
If Bambam had such a gift – but then you stop, shaking your head. It’s impossible. Bambam would know, if he were so inclined. Although – Jaebum didn’t know he held magic. Only Jinyoung knew, and only because his power is most the obvious of them all, the most strong. Even with this though, he denied the occurrences for months. Bambam is younger than Jinyoung, perhaps his power hasn’t begun to manifest yet.
Grasping hold of the idea, you nearly turn around. You almost return to the hill, head back to the party – but then you stop, shaking your head. That can wait. That can wait, because right now Bambam and Yugyeom are concentrated on the Knot. There will be time enough tomorrow to discuss but the one thing you’re certain of tonight, is Mark.
Senary is close to Quinque, near enough to walk and so, moving quickly, you mentally rehearse what your story for if you get caught. You were feeling unwell, left the party because you didn’t want to bother the others. You’re heading to Senary now, with the intention of sleep.
At the stables of Senary you stop though, glancing around the smaller courtyard to duck hastily inside. Here, you stashed a small bundle of cloth, the dress of a serving girl, a cloak and twin, plain slippers. That much you’ve learned from your first encounter with Mark.
Removing the silken gown and gloves from your body, you place these and your tiara in a burlap bag to stick behind a barrel of hay. You’ll come back for those later. Adjusting your hood so it shadows your face, you exit the stable and look up at the sky.
All you have to guide your search is Jinyoung’s words. That night of the ball he had a vision, one of darkness swallowing you whole – and later that night, you met Mark. Mark’s presence hid you from Jinyoung, his shadows cloaked you from Jinyoung’s power and tonight, Jinyoung saw you covered by shadow once more.
Steeling your thoughts, you set down the path towards the village. You have no Jinyoung to guide you, so you move at a much slower pace than before. In this regard, you’ve also learned: keep to the shadows, don’t talk to any merchants. People tend to ignore you for the most part, their gazes slide past, melt into the shadows as you feel a small glimmer of pride.
You’re getting better. Straightening slightly, you consider asking Jaebum for help with future expeditions. He’s grown up in the army, would probably have a pointer or two in terms of deception but then there’d be the awkward question of why. How could you explain the real reason – that you wish to sneak away? You wish to abandon your post, shirk your duty, ignore your responsibility.
All because you wish to see Mark.
Footsteps slowing, you reach the place the two of you first met. The center of town is surrounded by shingles and drainpipe – tonight, there is no Midnight Market though. There are aren’t many vendors either, no townspeople dancing. You stare out at the brown expanse of stone, and wonder what the hell you’re doing.
You have no future here, with Mark. At the end of this charade – however long that might be – you need to choose a husband. One from a very select group of people and Mark is not one of them. Thinking this causes your stomach to drop, because seeing him is pointless. Even as you know this, you continue to wander. Ducking down a side alley, you wander aimlessly, not sure what you’re even looking for.
The night is dark, streets humid, feeling like summer but also not. The air itself is alive, a lurid warmness as something, someone pulls you on. You tell yourself you need answers, tell yourself that’s why you’ve come. It’s so much more than that, though. You want to see him, feel him, want everything Jaebum spoke of, earlier when he talked about the woman he loved.
Because when he was describing her, when he was describing his Katherine – you kept on picturing Mark. The realization makes you stop, lifting your head to the night. The sky is cool, detached above you. It’s not htat you love Mark. No. But you could – stomach sinking, you know that you could.
“What use is a hood, if you’re going to expose your face entirely.”
Whirling around, you nearly hit the wall when you stumble. “Mark,” you gasp, squinting into the dark.
He’s leaning against the side of the alley, watching you warily; but unable to keep from smiling, when you take a step closer. Your hands reach out for his forearms, fingertips sliding over his own. Mark’s gloves are back, hood shading his head – but his expression seems lighter, looking at you.
“Mark,” you smile – faltering, the moment you remember. You recall the feel of his skin beneath your hands, the second he removed his gloves.
Seeing you gaze, noting your change in expression, Mark stiffens. “I,” he starts, then stops. “How did you find me?”
Frowning, you look up at him dazedly, “How did I find you?”
Mark nods. “I’ve been searching for you since that night,” he confesses, tepid. “I’ve been coming here, roaming the streets to find you. Did you,” he breaks off, suddenly hesitant. “Did you… try and find me?”
His question hangs before you in the air, heavy with uncertainty. It’s darker now. The night sky above is heady, the clouds closer than when you first walked into town. It’s chillier, too, and you find yourself stepping closer. Subconsciously you seek the heat of his body – breath fogging in the air between you.
“What happened that night,” you ask. Letting go of his arms, you stare down at his palms. “What did you do to me?”
“I,” Mark seems frozen, pressed to the wall – as though he’s trying very hard to be part of it. “I wasn’t, it wasn’t –"
“Don’t say it wasn’t you, since I know that it was.”
Mark stops, jaw tensing. “I shouldn’t have come,” he responds, eyes hard. “This was a mistake.”
When he treis to leave, your hand flies out. It surprises even yourself, when you shove him back to the wall. It takes all of your strength to keep him there, moving until you’re within inches of his face. Mark doesn’t seem to notice, hardly expending his effort.
“No,” you counter, tilting your head. “You shouldn’t have. You shouldn’t have come into my life at all, Mark. Shouldn’t have found me at Bambam’s party, shouldn’t have come to the ball, shouldn’t have danced with me.” Stepping even closer, you shove a finger against his clothed chest. “You did, though,” you declare. “You did, you made me feel this – and now you don’t get to walk away. You don’t get to leave me, don’t get to disappear. Now, you explain what the hell is going on.”
Mark stares at you for a second, then nods. “You’re right,” he admits – which is surprising.
“I know I am,” you nod, taken aback.
Mark looks away, air between you somehow gentler. “What do you want from me?” he asks, uncertain.
“The truth.”
A smile twists his mouth. “What an awful thing to wish for.”
“It’s not a wish,” you explain. “Just an ask.”
Mark thinks for a moment, then nods. “I don’t know where to begin,” he admits, eyes darkening. “There’s so much to say, things I’ve never told anyone. Things I’m not supposed to tell.”
“Well,” you hesitate. “I don’t want to make you break your promises.”
Mark laughs, the sound harsh. “I’ve been broken enough times to warrant such things, I wager. It’s about time I did the breaking.”
When he says this, a shiver trails your spine. Mark’s eyes are hard, expression too close and when you realize you’re still touching his chest, you lower your finger. “The truth,” you remind, softer than before.
Mark swallows. “Well. Why don’t I start with my name?”
“It’s not Mark?” you ask, lifting a brow.
He shrugs, letting this shoulder fall. “Yes and no. The name given to me at birth is Marcus.”
“Marcus,” you consider, turning it over in your mouth. “I like Mark better.”
Mark’s lips twitch. “Me, too.”
As you stare at him, your smile slowly disappears. “Why did your name change?”
Mark swallows. “I didn’t like what it meant,” he responds slowly. “Didn’t like hearing it, didn’t like being reminded who I was.”
“Who is?” you ask. “We’ve been standing here for nearly ten minutes, and I still feel no closer to the truth.”
“I – Y/N, gods. Will you just,” Mark huffs, pushing a hand through his hair. His gloves slide between the blonde strands, falling wild about his face. “I don’t know how to tell you this,” he blurts.
“Well, tell me something,” you demand, whrling around. Stomping in the same direction you came, you seem to forget you were the one who sought him out in the first palce. “Or I’m leaving.”
“My name is Marcus,” Mark calls out from behind.
Legs coming to a halt, you remain facing the street. Thunder rumbles in the distance and between its strikes, you can hear the pad of Mark’s boots walking closer. Leather on cobblestone, a swish of his cape though you don’t turn around to see him.
“My name is Mark,” he explains, still not visible. “I am the Seventh Prince of Morsus, heir to the throne of Septum.”
Though you continue to stand, the world becomes a sudden blank. All around there’s just the clear, cold pulse of night and Mark – who steps around you and meets your gaze.
“Say something,” he begs, shaking words loose from your lips.
“You – what?”
The idea is... impossible. Wholly unbelievable, he must be lying. Either that, or crazy; or some combination of the two.
Mark’s eyes, though – his eyes stop you. He seems sad, almost desperate and this, more than anything else, which makes you believe him. Clutching your cloak tighter, you stare Mark in the eyes – and you don’t leave.
“I,” he clears his throat. “I’m the sole Prince of Septum.”
“Septum,” you repeat, barely audible. “That’s impossible. The last Prince of Septum died the night of the curse.”
Mark’s gaze remains haunted. “I didn’t die.”
It’s this – a small, simple sentence – which hardens your resolve. There’s so much anguish behind the words, such contradictory meaning. Yes, Mark is alive. But no, he isn’t because his parents – his parents. With sudden understandng, you realize what this means. Mark’s parents pretended he was dead, have lied to the Kingdoms for all these years.
Pieces shifting, you stare at the risen man before you. “Why,” you whisper, eyes large, “would your parents pretend you’d died?”
Mark doesn’t move, hands twisting over each other. “Because I’m cursed,” he explains, gaze wild. “The witch gave me a curse, along with the Kingdom. She was in love with my father, and he chose another. She became crazy, mad with the pain and grief of it all and when I was born – my birth was the final straw.”
You don’t respond to this, just watch as Mark hastily tears off his glove.
“My mother explained it to me,” Mark mutters, staring down at his hand. “Just once, but I never forgot. She told me I was young, barely more than an infant when the witch came to our castle and threatened my mother. When my father stood between them, siding with his family, the witch sought revenge in response.”
Staring at him now, you don’t interrupt. You sense this  story is hard for him. Pieces of what Mark has said come floating back, and you recall this is the first time he’s confessed this aloud. This is the first time he’s admitted who he is – which means that the way you respond will be very important.
It’s hard. It’s hard to place this man, your mysterious stranger with the dead Prince of Morsus. Because that’s who the seventh Prince of Morsus is to you. A dead man, a future gone by, the one who disappeared and left your Kingdom to chaos.
But to find out he’s alive and not just alive, but he’s Mark. The King and Queen of Septum lied, all this time. Not just to you, not just Senary – they lied to their people. To the other city-states, other royals. They lied to everyone – and for what? A curse? Swallowing your anger, you return Mark’s gaze.
Mark exhales. “She cursed this Kingdom. She wanted to break the rule which forced royalty to marry other royalty.”
“Ah,” you respond, a small noise. “Which is why the curse produces only male heirs.”
“Exactly,” Mark nods. “That is why. That was not the only curse she bestowed, though.”
Thunder claps, a timid stirring in the corridor between you.
“No? What else?”
Mark stares at his hands, splayed in mid-air. “She cursed me,” he explains flatly. “She gave me power, handed me this weight. ‘A curse,’” he quotes, looking back up. “’A curse, where you’re as hated and despised as I am.’”
You blink back at him, not understanding. “What is that?”
“What she said to me,” Mark admits quietly. “My mother repeated the words to me often enough. I was given magic like the witch’s. Darkness, like hers. The witch gave me this curse, knowing it would hurt my mother – knowing I’d be a blight, each time she looked at me.”
“I,” the words die in your throat, shaking your head. “I don’t believe that for a second.”
“No?” Mark arches a brow. “Which part, exactly?”
“That you’re a blight,” you scoff, suddenly angry. “I don’t believe anyone could feel that way about you.”
Mark’s expression softens. “Thank you. I appreciate the sentiment”
“It’s not just sentiment,” you snap. “What happened is terrible, that witch cursing you is terrible but what’s worse, is that your parents let you think you’re a burden.”
“I.” Mark pauses. “They don’t say that, not exactly. It’s just that the witch’s powers are darkness, are awful – and since I’ve inherited them, so am I. It’s why you’re right, I shouldn’t have come here tonight.”
Rather than be appeased by this, he sets fire to your veins. Anger burns bright in your veins, hot enough to cast aside doubt because here, you know Mark is wrong. He’s so wrong, so blind – the dark is not inherently bad. “What powers did she give you?” you return, fierce in meeting his gaze.
Mark looks up at you, startled – as though amazed you’re still here. “Many,” he shrugs. “Even I’m unsure of them all. I can command the shadows,” Mark tells, crooking a finger. All around, the night seems to waver, shimmering closer as your eyes widen – the dark flows to Mark, as though sensing an equal. “I can destroy it, as well,” he adds softly, closing his fist.
The shadows wrap around a brick for it to disintegrate, turning the stone to nothing but a fine, dark powder. This falls listlessly downwards, drifted away on the breeze. Mark stares as it goes, his expression half-broken.
“I have pain, too,” he finishes, the words barely audible. Pressing two fingertips together, he stares down at his skin. “I can cause pain.”
You remember. You recall that bleak, awful agony the touch of his skin brought. It speared you entirely, left you gasping and helpless. It tried to keep you, tried to drag you under. You remember this struggle, remember only Youngjae’s warmth able to pull you back from the edge.
“Have you tried controlling that?” you respond, also staring at his hands.
Mark tugs back on his glove. “I have.”
“And?” You arch a brow. “Has anything worked?”
Mark stops, fabric half-on while he gives you a look. “If it had,” he waves said hand, “would I be standing here pulling on my gloves, for fear that I’ll hurt you?”
These words make you smile.
Mark notices this and frowns. “Why are you smiling?” he demands, incredulous. “You shouldn’t smile. I just said I’m a liar, that I’m cursed and quite literally cannot touch you. Not without severe pain to you or dying – and here you stand, smiling at me. Stop that!” he demands, when you continue.
Lifting a shoulder, you let this fall to your side. “Yes, well. You also don’t want to hurt me.”
Mark’s jaw drops. “That’s it? That’s all it takes to gain your favor? May I request,” he huffs, taking a step closer, “that you gain some higher standards.”
“In the entire time we’ve known each other,” you muse, as though he hasn’t spoken, “you’ve been nothing but good. Maybe a bit of an ass, but that’s not the same thing as evil, Mark. It’s my opinion,” you start, hesitating. “I think your parents are wrong.”
Mark goes still. “What?”
“Listen,” you exhale. “This is all… very new, to me. I’m trying to understand, but,” you shake your head. “It seems to me that in hiding you, the King and Queen made you think you have something to hide.”
Mark’s gaze flickers, and you know you’ve hit the nail on the head.
When you reach for his hand, he doesn’t move – though his gaze darts lower, widening at the sight. “Why hide who you are?” you ask. “Why hide your powers? Since when does a name make a person?”
“Y/N,” Mark manages to respond. “I hurt you. It was selfish, because I wanted to see you. I wanted that more than I’ve ever wanted anything before in my life– and that was selfish. I shouldn’t have come at all,” he whispers, shaking his head. “I should have saved you from myself, but I didn’t. I saw you and wanted you, and look what happened. I hurt you,” he responds, gaze fierce. “My hands, my power. It was me, all me!”
Looking back, your gaze hardens. “You wanted me?”
“Is that,” Mark breaks off, eyes wide. “Is that all you heard? I tell you I’m cursed – you don’t care. I tell you I hurt you – you don’t care. I tell you my parents literally lock me in the tallest room of the tallest tower – and you don’t care. All you care, is that I want you?”
“Yes,” you return, looking fiercely up. “Because I want you, too, Mark.”
Mark stares back at you, dumbfounded. “You… want me?”
You nod. Only nod, since you’re just now realizing he has yet to respond. Seconds pass – maybe years, honestly – while Mark just looks at you, dark eyes wide and fearful.
“But,” he swallows. “Aren’t you afraid of me, of what I could do?”
“No,” you respond, steadily. “Are you afraid of me?”
“Yes,” he nods, rather timid. His hands reach, shaking where they touch you. “I’m terrified of this.”
“Good,” you whisper, tilting your head upwards. “Perhaps that’s why I’m not, then,” you explain, as his expression softens.
“You want me,” Mark repeats, somewhat incredulous.
“I want you.”
Mark just stares, warm gaze tracing over your skin. His shadows disentangle from the alley, pooling around the skin of his ankles.
“How,” your gaze moves down, distracted. “How did I not notice that before?”
“Oh,” Mark starts, somewhat guiltily and the shadows retract, though not very far. “I can bend the shadows easily. It’s how I move between places, how I sneak into unattainable spaces. I blend into the darkness, become the shadow itself.”
“So,” you frown. “Why is it so hard with your other powers, then? With the pain, with destruction?”
Mark’s expression falters. “I don’t know. With my skin,” he inhales. “It’s kind of hard to experiment with. It’s not something I care to subject others to.”
A lightbulb dawns. “Youngjae,” you blurt out. Wincing, you remember your promise not to tell but now it’s too late, so you continue. “Youngjae has magic.”
“He what?” Mark seems taken aback. “Of what kind?”
“Healing,” you hasten. “I think. He acted like it was more, though I don’t know the extent.”
Mark pauses. “I see. He’s my opposite.”
“In power,” you respond, “perhaps. In person, I think you’re remarkably similar. He’s a tad louder. Less sarcastic, more kind.”
Mark arches a brow. “Me? Sarcastic?”
“Never,” you tease. “But Youngjae also has a mentor. A tutor, helping him control his magic. Youngjae said it was difficult to harness. That it can’t be harnessed, without practice and training. Mark,” you implore. “What if that’s it? What if this destruction, this pain – it’s just because you can’t control it?”
Mark hesitates, wavering. “It sounds too good to be true.”
“What’s worse,” you challenge, lifting your chin. “Accepting things the way they are out of fear? Or trying to change the way things are and potentially failing?”
Mark doesn’t move, before his hands slide down your arms. Shifting his weight, you feel the warmth of his body. He doesn’t touch you further, though – never more than this.
“Why,” he exhales. “Do you say one thing, and I suddenly feel as though change might be possible.”
“Because I’m incredibly intelligent,” you respond, raising both brows.
Mark smile – a gesture which changes his face. It lightens his features, smooths over his brow. “You,” he whispers, bending until he hovers a half-centimeter from your lips. “I wish I could kiss you.”
You stare up at him, feeling the grasp of his hands on your waist – when did that happen? – and struggling to control your racing heartbeat. You struggle to control your hands, which tremble like butterflies. “I want you to do something for me,” you murmur.
He nods. “Anything.”
“I want you to learn.”
“Anything in particular?” he asks, eyes gleaming. “Or...?”
You blush at the implied tone. “Learn to control your power. Learn to control your magic. After all,” you arch your brow. “I’m supposed to marry a Prince.”
“Interesting, that.”
“I hear,” you stand taller, almost on tip-toes, “there’s a Prince I’ve yet to consider.”
Mark stares back, a hint of a smile to his lips. “Very interesting. I have heard,” he leans, hand finding the wall behind you –
As light, clean and bright, sweeps across the alley.
“Who goes there?” a voice yells. Male – deep.
You whirl, eyes widening – and freeze, when you turn back to the wall. It’s empty. Nothing before you, nothing behind, nothing around. No one else is in the alley. Only the shadows, as the slide away into darkness.
Slowly, you turn to face the palace guards. “It is I,” you sigh, removing your hood. “Y/N, of Morsus.”
The guard’s face whitens, dropping his sword. “Princess?” he gasps.

Build a Native Desktop GIF Searcher App Using NodeGui
NodeGui is an open-source library for building cross-platform, native desktop apps with Node.js. NodeGui apps can run on macOS, Windows, and Linux. The apps built with NodeGui are written using JavaScript, styled with CSS and rendered as native desktop widgets using the Qt framework.
Some of the features of NodeGui are:
native widgets with built-in support for dark mode
low CPU and memory footprint
styling with CSS including complete support for Flexbox layout
complete Node.js API support and access to all Node.js compatible npm modules
excellent debugging support using Chrome's DevTools
first-class TypeScript support
NodeGui is powered by the Qt framework, which makes it CPU and memory efficient compared with other Chromium-based solutions such as Electron. This means that applications written using NodeGui do not open up a browser instance and render the UI in it. Instead, all the widgets are rendered natively.
This tutorial will demonstrate how to install NodeGui and use it to build a meme searcher that lives in the system tray and communicates with the GIPHY API.
The full source code for this tutorial is available on GitHub.
Installation and Basic Setup
For this tutorial it’s assumed that you have Node.js v12 or greater installed. You can confirm that both Node and npm are available by running:
# This command should print the version of Node.js node -v # This command should print the version of npm npm -v
If you need help with this step, check out our tutorial on installing Node.
Install CMake and Compilation Tools
NodeGui requires CMake and C++ compilation tools for building the native C++ layer of the project. Make sure you install CMake >= 3.1 along with a C++ compiler that supports C++11 and up. The detailed instructions are a bit different depending on your operating system.
macOS
It’s recommended to install CMake using Homebrew. Run the following commands in a terminal after installing Homebrew:
brew install cmake brew install make
You can confirm the installation by running:
# This command should print the version of CMake which should be higher than 3.1 cmake --version make --version
Lastly, you need GCC/Clang to compile C++ code. Verify that you have GCC installed using this command:
gcc --version
If you don’t have GCC installed, make sure you install Command Line Tools for Xcode or XCode Developer tools from Apple's developer page.
Windows
You can install CMake on Windows by downloading the latest release from the CMake download page.
It’s strongly recommend you use Powershell as the preferred terminal in Windows.
You can confirm the CMake installation by running:
# This command should print the version of CMake which should be higher than 3.1 cmake --version
Lastly, you need a C++ compiler. One possibility would be to install Visual Studio 2017 or higher. It’s recommended you choose the Desktop development with C++ workload during the installation process.
Linux
We’ll focus on Ubuntu 18.04 for the purposes of this tutorial. It’s recommended to install CMake using the package manager. Run the following commands in a terminal:
sudo apt-get install pkg-config build-essential sudo apt-get install cmake make
You can confirm the installation by running:
# This command should print the version of CMake which should be higher than 3.1 cmake --version make --version
Lastly, you need GCC to compile C++ code. Verify that you have GCC installed using the command:
# gcc version should be >= v7 gcc --version
Hello World
In order to get started with our NodeGui meme app, we’ll clone the starter project.
Note: Running this requires Git and npm.
Open a terminal and run:
git clone https://github.com/nodegui/nodegui-starter memeapp cd memeapp npm install npm start
If everything goes well, you should see a working hello world NodeGui app on the screen.
Tumblr media
By default, the nodegui-starter project is a TypeScript project. However, in this tutorial we’ll be writing our application in JavaScript. In order to convert our starter to a JS project, we’ll make the following minor changes:
Delete the index.ts file in the src folder.
Create a new file index.js in the src directory with the following contents:
src/index.js
const { QMainWindow, QLabel } = require('@nodegui/nodegui'); const win = new QMainWindow(); win.setWindowTitle('Meme Search'); const label = new QLabel(); label.setText('Hello World'); win.setCentralWidget(label); win.show(); global.win = win;
As far as development is concerned, a NodeGui application is essentially a Node.js application. All APIs and features found in NodeGui are accessible through the @nodegui/nodegui module, which can be required like any other Node.js module. Additionally, you have access to all Node.js APIs and Node modules. NodeGui uses native components instead of web-based components as building blocks.
In the above example, we’ve imported QMainWindow and QLabel to create a native window that displays the text “Hello World”.
Now run the app again:
npm start
Tumblr media
Now that we have our basic setup ready, let's start building our meme searcher 🥳.
Note: If something doesn't work while following this tutorial, check your package.json file to ensure that the starter project has pulled in the most up-to-date version of NodeGui.
Displaying an Animated GIF
Since memes are generally animated GIFs, we’ll start by creating a basic window that displays a GIF image from a URL.
To do this, we’ll make use of QMovie along with QLabel. QMovie is not a widget but a container that can play simple animations. We’ll use it in combination with QLabel.
An example usage of QMovie looks like this:
const movie = new QMovie(); movie.setFileName('/absolute/path/to/animated.gif'); movie.start(); const animatedLabel = new QLabel(); animatedLabel.setMovie(movie);
Since, we want to load an image from a URL, we can’t use QMovie's setFileName method, which is reserved only for local files. Instead, we’ll download the GIF image using axios as a buffer and use the QMovie method loadFromData instead.
So let's start with the axios installation:
npm i axios
Now let's create a function that will take a URL as a parameter and will return a configured QMovie instance for the GIF:
async function getMovie(url) { const { data } = await axios.get(url, { responseType: 'arraybuffer' }); const movie = new QMovie(); movie.loadFromData(data); movie.start(); return movie; }
The getMovie function takes in a URL, tells axios to download the GIF as a buffer, and then uses that buffer to create a QMovie instance.
You can think of QMovie as a class that handles the inner logic of playing the GIF animation frame by frame. QMovie is not a widget, so it can't be shown on the screen as it is. Instead, we’ll use a regular QLabel instance and set QMovie to it.
Since getMovie returns a promise, we need to make some changes to the code. After some minor refactoring, we end up with the following.
src/index.js
const { QMainWindow, QMovie, QLabel } = require('@nodegui/nodegui'); const axios = require('axios').default; async function getMovie(url) { const { data } = await axios.get(url, { responseType: 'arraybuffer' }); const movie = new QMovie(); movie.loadFromData(data); movie.start(); return movie; } const main = async () => { const win = new QMainWindow(); win.setWindowTitle('Meme Search'); const label = new QLabel(); const gifMovie = await getMovie( 'https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/e/e3/Animhorse.gif' ); label.setMovie(gifMovie); win.setCentralWidget(label); win.show(); global.win = win; }; main().catch(console.error);
The main function is our entry point. Here we create a window and a label. We then instantiate a QMovie instance with the help of our getMovie function, and finally set the QMovie to a QLabel.
Run the app with npm start and you should see something like this:
Tumblr media
Fetching GIFs from the GIPHY API
Giphy.com has a public API which anyone can use to build great apps that use animated GIFs. In order to use the GIPHY API, you should register at developers.giphy.com and obtain an API key. You can find further instructions here.
We’ll be using the search endpoint feature for implementing our meme search.
Let’s start by writing a searchGifs function that will take a searchTerms parameter as input and request GIFs using the above endpoint:
const GIPHY_API_KEY = 'Your API key here'; async function searchGifs(searchTerm) { const url = 'https://api.giphy.com/v1/gifs/search'; const res = await axios.get(url, { params: { api_key: GIPHY_API_KEY, limit: 25, q: searchTerm, lang: 'en', offset: 0, rating: 'pg-13' } }); return res.data.data; }
The result of the function after execution will look something like this:
[ { "type": "gif", "id": "dzaUX7CAG0Ihi", "url": "https://giphy.com/gifs/hello-hi-dzaUX7CAG0Ihi", "images": { "fixed_width_small": { "height": "54", "size": "53544", "url": "https://media3.giphy.com/media/dzaUX7CAG0Ihi/100w.gif?cid=725ec7e0c00032f700929ce9f09f3f5fe5356af8c874ab12&rid=100w.gif", "width": "100" }, "downsized_large": { "height": "220", "size": "807719", "url": "https://media3.giphy.com/media/dzaUX7CAG0Ihi/giphy.gif?cid=725ec7e0c00032f700929ce9f09f3f5fe5356af8c874ab12&rid=giphy.gif", "width": "410" }, ... }, "slug": "hello-hi-dzaUX7CAG0Ihi", ... "import_datetime": "2016-01-07 15:40:35", "trending_datetime": "1970-01-01 00:00:00" }, { type: "gif", ... }, ... ]
The result is essentially an array of objects that contain information about each GIF. We’re particularly interested in returnValue[i].images.fixed_width_small.url for each image, which contains the URL to the GIF.
Showing a List of GIFs Using the API's Response
In order to show a list of GIFs, we’ll create a getGifViews function that will:
create a QWidget container
create a QMovie widget for each GIF
create a QLabel from each QMovie instance
attach each QLabel as a child of the QWidget container
return the QWidget container
The code looks like this:
async function getGifViews(listOfGifs) { const container = new QWidget(); container.setLayout(new FlexLayout()); const promises = listOfGifs.map(async gif => { const { url, width } = gif.images.fixed_width_small; const movie = await getMovie(url); const gifView = new QLabel(); gifView.setMovie(movie); gifView.setInlineStyle(`width: ${width}`); container.layout.addWidget(gifView); }); await Promise.all(promises); container.setInlineStyle(` flex-direction: 'row'; flex-wrap: 'wrap'; justify-content: 'space-around'; width: 330px; height: 300px; `); return container; }
Let’s break this down a bit.
First, we create our container widget. QWidgets are essentially empty widgets that act as containers. They’re similar to <div> elements in the web world.
Next, in order to assign child widgets to the QWidget, we need to give it a layout. A layout dictates how the child widgets should be arranged inside a parent. Here we choose FlexLayout.
Then, we use our getMovie function to create a QMovie instance for each GIF URL. We assign the QMovie instance to a QLabel (named gifView) and give it some basic styling using the setInlineStyle method. Finally, we add the QLabel widget to the container's layout using the layout.addWidget method.
Since this is all happening asynchronously, we wait for everything to resolve using Promise.all, before setting some container styles and returning the container widget.

THIS MINIDOCUMENTARY IS ALREADY ROCKING IT! Stay updated with the movie and like our page here: https://www.facebook.com/pg/moringasop/photos/?ref=page_internal I have a few options for our fans of theMoringaKingdom Royal Champion ALLIANCE. So listen closely here....We have it already broken into many segment parts, this is because we want to ensure optimum quality of picture in the video and the audio layering of songs. With that said, I know it is ranging in the 3 hour mark, but I am thinking about making ONE FULL Part the hour and half (1 hr 44min) With the most dramatic scenes with Music and the story, but also still the huge message, that I have never offered until now from the past. THE SECOND PART 2, will also be very important information on the HISTORY of Belize, Rules/Laws, The education system and what news is happening now between Belize and Guatemala; I AM PLANNING On Making this all RAW, meaning no music or audio clips added, just the full story with no added productions. I NEed to know your opinion, because I already have the First Picture video complete and you can view now, this has the first part, actually, of the Dream Theater Album, "Astonishing", which will also be the main theme for the entire section of PART 1. The rest of the album will be in that part, so the first portion, is 41:41 found in this video, which I didn't want to promote until I was done. This is sort of like a Sneak Peak of the Entire PART 1 & 2 of the MiniDocumentary. To make matters more complex, I am still undecided on whether or not, I want to BUNCH PART 1 & 2 TOGETHER for an entire 3 hour special, which will take a great deal of many more hours of mine, and even more rendering, publishing, and uploading patience; it could take another many days; praying it isnt another week. Breaking this up into parts, I believe will take less time, however it will not be a FULL MOVIE Experience, for it would be broken in half; plus dont forget the picture video section found here: https://vimeo.com/216821113 WHAT DO YOU THINK I SHOULD DO? DEAR ERIC PLOTT: " and you need to talk about how our healthcare system needs to change" ERIC'S REPLY: It will be mentioned sir, I promis
