Annabeth has been told her entire life she needs to earn love and glory and respect. Her father neglected her and her mother makes her earn her love. She has been raised to believe she has to be the best or nothing at all. She was told love was conditional. And then she meets Percy and in less than a WEEK she is questioning her beliefs, the gods, and learning that other people can and will put her first. Percy jumped for her. Percy got in the chair for her. Percy sees her. There is no limit to how much they will do for each other.

HELLO HOW did i never pick up on the fact that annabeth gives percy her camp necklace for good luck in the lightning thief. and in the battle of the labyrinth when she kisses him, percy considers it a good luck kiss. and then OBVIOUSLY, in the last olympian: “don’t i get a kiss for luck? it’s kind of a tradition, right?” HOW DID I NEVER REALIZE

I saw a post abt this the other day but it's been eating me up inside so I gotta get it in writing. Plus it was in meme format when I saw it so I wanna make sure the gravity of this particular thing is out there somewhere bc I said so.

Annabeth was under the impression for most of her life that she had to earn love and respect from those around her. First from her father after he remarried, and she had to earn his attention back from his wife and kids. Then once she got to camp, she had to earn the admiration of the other campers, her siblings, Chiron and Mr. D, and basically everyone but Luke (because she earned his and Thalia's respect by simply surviving so long after running away). AND THEN she had to earn Athena's respect. That was the ultimate reward in her opinion, because that's kinda what I imagine they teach at camp: "You have to earn the respect of the gods to get them to look at you, let alone respect or, heaven forbid, love you." It's fucked up but its true. It's one of the first things Luke tells Percy upon his arrival. It's how you get claimed, earn a quest, and get all these things that Camp deems so important.

And then Annabeth meets Percy.

Percy, who, despite having his own traumas and tough road to hoe, still knows the feeling of an unconditionally loving home and person. He never had to earn Sally's love. She loved him despite him getting kicked out of school every year, despite him being stubborn and kinda an ass sometimes. She loved him despite his own view of himself. She shoved all that aside and loved her son because THATS HOW PARENTING WORKS.

And then you shove these two little kids together who've had wildly different backgrounds and I bet you'd get some interesting conversations (although they aren't shown a lot in the book or the show). Like Annabeth having to explain all the shit she's done to get her mother's attention and Percy being like "well damn."

And then he starts to notice that she applies this to other relationships too. She starts doing certain things that Percy notices as trying to gain his respect and it gets worse as they get closer and he finally has to be like "hey, you know I like you, right? like you don't have to prove yourself to me" and Annabeth has whiplash because she's never not had to earn love.

It just makes their relationship so much better to me.

I love the idea that percy was fully aware of his own crush on annabeth since the beginning, but he was COMPLETELY oblivious to annabeth's crush on him

we know the annabeth's had a crush on percy since TLT, i personally think that she realized she liked him during the tunnel of love scene where he was protected her from the spiders and all.

just picture twelve year old annabeth who couldn't understand for the life of her why this annoying, random boy keeps making her feel a certain type of way. and then, he protects her from mechanical spiders and it all just clicks.

BUT i think percy began to develop a crush on annabeth pretty early on in TLT (my personal theory is it started when they were playing hacky sack and annabeth was SO impressive that percy was just in awe.. like that’s the most twelve year old thing ever and i could die from cuteness aggression)

and then right after, annabeth is quick on her feet to think of a solution to get percy out of the bus and dodge the furies, and that’s when his crush was in full effect.

nowww, i dont think percy realized his crush until like SoM, but it definitely had been there since TLT (annabeth’s is the opposite i think, she realized her crush immediately because she knew what having a crush felt like, luke, before and she’s just more in touch with her emotions in general)

one thing i love about percy jackson and annabeth chase is how they're both the sunshine to each other's midnight rain.

percy's childhood wasn't an easy one. and when he finds camp half-blood, the closest thing to a safe place, his life was still filled with constant quests, monster attacks, tragedy, near-death experience, war, tartarus and a lifetime of trauma. yet, yet, in the midst of all the chaos annabeth was his biggest source of comfort. when he met aphrodite he saw annabeth. when he bathed in styx he saw annabeth. when he lost his memories he remembered annabeth. when he saw her falling in hell, he chose to follow her to the world of dead over everything else. he dreams to settle down and grow old with her. his past and present was filled with struggles and trauma yet his dream to have a future with annabeth keeps him going. she was the happiest and best thing which happened to him since sally and even if his life is an exhausting one, as long as he has annabeth, he will always have something to look forward to.

annabeth's childhood was equally bad. this girl was desperate to be loved properly almost all her life, only to be constantly denied or abandoned. her step mother resented her and her father chose his other family, forcing her to run away. luke promised her a family, only to betray her and leave her broken. thalia was tragically killed and when she was brought back to life, she chose a new life with hunters. and then there's percy, who continued to chose her over and over and over again. when annabeth was kidnapped, no one was as desperate as percy to rescue her. when she was stabbed, no one acted as frantic as percy. when she was falling in tartarus, percy didn't think twice before jumping after her. whenever she felt she's be abandoned again, he proved her wrong. and loved her unconditionally to go to hell and back for her. he promised her he will never let her get away from him. and he kept his word.

The possibility of Ace having a big fat crush on Yuu is astounding. Like if they're (this probably won't happen) canon, I want them to have percabeth type of development and maybe dynamic too. Literally peak friends to lovers trope 🤭
