Last Iceberg Radio takeover with Murdoc! This one's the longest Iceberg Radio takeover, with almost double the talking time of 2-D and Noodle's takeovers.
Iceberg Radio was initially a Canadian Internet radio service back in 2005 and has since been bought and renamed to AccuRadio. The site no longer has these radio spots uploaded, so the takeovers are considered lost media.
Audio taken from Blur Archive Project’s archive folder (with their permission), which you can find for yourself here:
You can listen to the full uncut radio takeover with songs included there!

Transcript under the cut!
Radio announcer: This is the Hour of Mayhem with Gorillaz' bassist, Murdoc Niccals! Exclusively on icebergradio.com!
Murdoc: Hi kids, y'know, this is your Uncle Murdoc Niccals, y'know? Bass player and king of Gorillaz. This is Murdoc's Hour of Mayhem, all you lucky people. *laughs*
And for the next sixty minutes, y'know, I've got total control over these turntables! *evil laugh and assorted Murdoc noises*
So pour yourself something wet and cold and let's kick the show off with a big, fat ear blaster from my friends and yours: Motörhead. Oooh yeah! This bugger doused out your ears: take one look and DIE!
[After "Ace of Spades"]
*Note: Take one look and die is a lyric in "Ace of Spades".
Murdoc: Ooooh yeaaaah, man. That was...y'know what? I'm-That was so soothing, yeah? Floating now. Nice one, Lemmy. This is Murdoc Niccals of Gorillaz and I'm hosting-ah-ah-er-Murdoc's Hour of Mayhem for you tonight, so what's up next?
Aaaah, yeah, dear, old Ozzy. Mmmm, aaaah, mmm, aaaah.
So much to answer for. This is where it all started for me, y'know? This is Black Sabbath with, uh, "Sabbath Bloody Sabbath". Hey, y'know what? I had that Kelly Osbourne back in my cab the other day. Oh, she's a lovely girl. Has very, um mmm, strong forearms. *laughs*
[After "Sabbath Bloody Sabbath"]
*Note: Lemmy is the lead singer and bassist of Motörhead. Ozzy refers to Ozzy Osbourne, the lead singer of Black Sabbath. Kelly Osbourne is his daughter.
Murdoc: Ooooh yeah, man, I'm just-Oh, I'm having such-
I-I'm having such a good time here, y'know? I haven't had, uh, such a good time since I-I had a-a lovely time...that other time, but this is good.
And, y'know, coming up next we got Guns n' Roses with "Mr. Brownstone". I hear, uh, Velvet Revolver are covering this next track live, which should be a bit of fun, but, uh, y'know. If only, really, to see, y'know, that, uh, old, uh, Scott Weiland mincing up and down the stage. *Murdoc noises*
That'd be good. I'll tell you, y'know what? If I was Axl Rose, I'd sssmash that guy's face in. I mean, he's got-he's got half the original Guns n' Roses, y'know? He-He's playing Gunner songs and he's even nicked Axl's dance. Y'know? HE'S GOT AXL'S DANCE, MAN!
Y'know, what is he doing? Y'know, if that isn't bad enough, the guy's even wearing the same bleedin' hat! Ponce!
Anyway, here's the original, proper version of Guns n' RRRoses!
*Note: Velvet Revolver is an American rock band that had three former Guns n' Roses members in it [Slash (lead guitar), Duff McKagan (bass) and Matt Sorum (drums)] after the latter changed its lineup again (due to creative differences allegedly). Scott Weiland was the lead singer for Velvet Revolver. Axl Rose is the lead singer for Guns n' Roses.
[After "Mr. Brownstone"]
Murdoc: Yeeeah, baby! Oooh, we like it. That's Guns n' Roses with, uh, "Mr. Brownstone".
Oi, Axl! How long are we gonna have to wait for the-the next GNR album? I mean, come on, mate! Please, y'know? Listen, for pity's sake, y'know.
And, uh, this is Murdoc's Hour of Mayhem with me, Murdoc Niccals from Gorillaz. This next one's from Queen and this is "Tie Your Mother Down!" Mm...
[After "Tie Your Mother Down"]
Murdoc: "Tie Your Mother Down"! Ooooh, yeah. Hey, I sug—I don't suggest actually that you do that at home. I mean, y'know, don't-don't even go there, y'know? It's just a song. It's not real. Doesn't mean you gotta do it. It's not an instruction, y'know? It's just a bit of rrrrock 'n roll.
Okay, uuuuhhh, AC/DC, uh, "Jailbreak". Hmmm, what d'ya think of that? Having just escaped from a jail down in Mexico—that's me, that is—uuuummmm, this track, yeah, means quite a lot to me. And, uh, if you, uh, police boys down in Mexico are listening tonight, as I said then: "ADIOS, MIS AMIGOS! SUCKERS! LOSERS!"
*wheeze-laughing*
I bet you thought you were gonna catch me then, eh? Buncha losers.
[After "Jailbreak"]
Murdoc: AC/DC there! D'you know what? I went to see their tribute band recently. Uh, they're called AB/CD. *laughs* No, true! It was close, y'know, but not the real Bon Scott, if y'know what I mean.
Anyway, next up, we got—
Hey, wait a minute! Wha—Rush?! What's...What's goin' on, y'know? What's happening, man? W-What's all-W-What's this doing in my collection?!
*clicks tongue*
Has someone been muckin' around with my records? Feckin' Rush, I mean, are you serious?
*sighs* Oh well. Okay. Apparently, this is Rush. Huh. "Tom Sawyer". Prefer the book.
*Note: AB/CD is a real AC/DC tribute band lol. Bon Scott was the second lead singer for AC/DC.
[After "Tom Sawyer"]
Radio announcer: H-H-H-Hour! Of! Mayhem!
[After "Unchained" by Van Halen]
Murdoc: Anyway, that's, ah, Van Halen, and, uh, thank you to Mr. Edward of Van Halen. That's his full name, you know? I raise my glass and salute your fine, fast fingers. You sir are truly of a gifted grrrrrandmaster of the axe-playing skills, y'know?
Coming up we got KISS. *Murdoc noises* And uh, this is Murdoc's Hour of Mayhem! And, uh, if, uh, tongues could tell tales, y'know, Gene Simmons would be, uh, top-shelf, baby. *chuckles*
[KISS's "Cold Gin" playing in the background]
Okay, this is, uh, this is KISS with, uh, "Cold Gin". Mmm. *clears throat*
*away from the microphone* Pass us a bit of that, will you? Yeah, cheers. Hm. *smacks lips* Oh! Do you come here often? You're nice. Mm, mm, mm!
*Note: Edward refers to Eddie Van Halen, the guitarist, keyboardist, and primary songwriter for Van Halen. Gene Simmons is the bassist and co-lead singer for KISS.
[After "Cold Gin"]
Murdoc: Oh. Oh! *clears throat*
*away from the microphone* Thank you very much. That was very nice.
*clears throat* Sorry, sorry! Um, yeah. *clears throat and hums*
That was, uh, that was KISS and, uh, this is Murdoc's Hour of Mayhem with me, Murdoc Niccals from Gorillaz. Oooh, you're lucky! Let's, uh, let's sort of slap another one on quick, shall we, before I lose my stroke.
Uh, this next band released a track called "Don't Fear the Reaper". Yeah, I remember that. Oooh, Blue Oyster Cult! But you know, uh, that's easy for them to say. *chuckles*
I tell you, when-when-when-when you see the bloke, y'know, nine-foot tall, big scythe, black cloak, bony fingers. Serious! I guarantee you! You are going to crap yourself, y'know.
Anyway, this is Blue Oyster Cult with, ah, "Cities On Flame with Rock and Roll", and boy, do I know that feeling.
[After "Cities On Flame with Rock and Roll" and "Too Fast for Love" by Mötley Crüe]
Murdoc: Ooooh yeah! Joy, yeah. There we are. There we are. How's about that, then? Oh yes, it's Murdoc's saddle. Oop. Guys and girls, as it happens.
*laughs*
You don't know what I'm talking about, do you? Uh, that was Mötley, um... *clears throat* Mötley Dude there with, uh, "Too Fast for Love".
Hey, hey, y'know, I-I know what they're on about, y'know? I do. I know what they're on about. Y'know. I'm a busy man. Sometimes I've gotta be in and outta there like a shot, y'know. Sorry, love, but, uh, time and tide wait for no man!
That T-Bone Tommy Lee, he's a big boy, isn't he? Have you seen the videos? *laughs* Mm, oi, you got a license for that python, sonny? *laughs*
Coming up, uh, Metallica's tribute to that most painful of side effects when someone shunts your back-end. "Whiplash"! This is Metallica!
*Note: T-Bone is the nickname for Tommy Lee from Mötley Crüe. He was apparently given the nickname because he's very tall and lean.
[After "Whiplash"]
Murdoc: Oooh yeaaah. Oh, I love it! I love it! Just let it wash over you, y'know. Uncle Murdoc take control. Just sit back and relax. Let Uncle Murdoc mmmmassage you with mmmayhem. Lovely, innit?
That was Metallica, and, uuuhhhhh, this is Murdoc's Hour of Mayhem, with me Murdoc from Gorillaz. Why not? And this next track is from my band. Gorillaz. This is, uuuhhh, this is—
Oooh, that was good. D'you know what? I managed *smacks lips* to get a sort of a *whistles through his teeth* finger in there. S'whistles.
Anyway, this is a big punk rock anthem from our brand-new album Demon Days. What I did. And uuuhhh, yeah. It's all about, well, drinking booze and stuff. Actually, y'know, I'm feeling a bit giddy already. Y'know?
And somebody said to me the other day, "Murdoc, you know, you look a bit wan."
I'm not sure what they were talking about. Big track coming through! Look out!
[After "White Light"]
Murdoc: Thank yoooou, Gorillaz. And actually for the first time in any of these links, that is gotta be the first time I meant what I said. *laughs*
No, seriously, I meant it every other time. But, uh, there we are.
[Gorillaz' "Clint Eastwood" playing in the background]
That's, um, "White Light" from our new Demon Days, uh, album. Oh dear. What a shame. Last song tonight. Y'know, it's a bit sad, isn't it? I mean, it's very poignant moment, this. Um, if I had to pick one tune to sum up the last four years of my life in Gorillaz, this would have to be it. Definitely. Definitely.
Well, that or "Shut Up or Your Face", y'know. So, well, that's it, y'know. As the sun sets like a shy satsuma below the horizon—*laughs*
I've, uh, I've played you every record I've, uh, ever owned, so, um, therein lies the sum set of influences that make up my band Gorillaz.
Um, well! Since our new album Demon Days came out, yeah, I'm like a total magnet, y'know, for all these chubby, little Spanish tarts, which is great fun. I love that Rubenesque-kinda look, y'know? Something to get a hold of, y'know? *Murdoc noises*
Actually, there's not a whole lot of me to get a hold of, but, erm, that's not my problem, really. *chuckles* Hm, well, except in the, uh...y'know department. *Murdoc noises*
So anyway, you've been listening to me, Murdoc Niccals' Hour of Mayhem. Ciao, my infants. And remember: Satan loves you!

If you'd like, u can talk about any other songs you like too, since the 5 song limit seems to have wounded you
:3
*cracks knuckles* Alright bitches (affectionate) let's fuckin go. To keep things simple I'll try to stick with artists, but I do have a few stand alone songs that I think deserve attention. This is gonna be a long one, so apologies in advance.
The Spy and the Liar/ Cog in the Machine from I Expect You To Die 2 and 3 respectively. The game series itself is highly underrated and I couldn't suggest watching a playthrough more, but these two songs perfectly encompass the vibe of the game. I even included a link to the opening credits for both games because hearing the song is one thing, but seeing it with the video is a goddamn experience. Puddles Pity Party is responsible for the vocals in The Spy and the Liar and Haley Reinhart for Cog in the Machine, and their voices are fucking incredible. I could not possibly do any explanation on how good they are proper justice.
Ronnie James Dio. Probably my favorite voice in metal music. He was the lead vocalist of Black Sabbath for a bit after Ozzy Osbourne left as well as a vocalist in the band Rainbow for a while, and although his performances in both bands are stellar I think he really comes into his own in Dio. Some songs of his I would recommend are Holy Diver (my favorite of his), Caught in the Middle, Rainbow in the Dark, and The Last in Line. I feel like the best way to describe his music is "epic ballad", and that's very much reflected in the music video for Holy Diver.
Motörhead. This band was a prominent influence for Metallica, and at it's head is Lemmy Kilmister, the lead singer and bassist. His gravelly voice is incredibly distinct and is absolutely fantastic, and he was also close friends with Ozzy Osbourne. My favorite song of Motörhead's is by far Hellraiser, but some other highlights of theirs are Ace of Spades, Motörhead , and Heroes (a cover of David Bowie's Heroes which is just as good as the original).
Living Colour. If Motörhead is The Father and Dio is The Son, then Living Colour is the Holy Spirit of metal to me. As I said in a different ask, everybody seems to forget about Living Colour or dismiss them because they tend to lean into the funk metal genre, but I think that’s one of the many things that makes them such a strong metal band. Their lyrics have touched on so many social and racial issues that Im in no way qualified to talk about, but for a genre that at the time was dominated by white men (with a few important exceptions such as Jimi Hendrix, Lita Ford, Ann and Nancy Wilson, etc) it wasn’t something you heard very often. Their music is phenomenal and definitely deserves more attention. Some songs of theirs that I would recommend are Cult of Personality (my favorite of theirs), Open Letter to a Landlord, Song Without Sin, and Sacred Ground.
Jim Nabors. This man was a huge part of my childhood and was actually born close to where I lived most of my life. As a queer Southerner himself, he means a lot to me personally. He is well known for his role as Gomer Pyle on The Andy Griffith Show and Gomer Pyle USMC, as well as for his incredible baritone singing voice. And holy fuck that singing voice. My two favorite songs sung by him are The Impossible Dream and Blowin' in the Wind, the latter unfortunately only on the show Goner Pyle USMC. I actually own one of his records from the 60s and it's one of my most prized possessions.
Tom Lehrer. Lehrer is one of the greatest satirical songwriters ever. This man walked so Weird Al could run, and he was actually a math teacher at MIT and Harvard of all fuckin things. It's hard to just choose two or three songs of his to recommend, but some of my favorites are We Will All Go Together When We Go, So Long Mom (A Song For WWIII), The Vatican Rag, and Wernher von Braun. Two of his most popular songs however are The Masochism Tango and The Elements. I also own one of his records from the 60s, and it's another prized possession of mine.
The Aquabats!. Probably my favorite ska punk band ever. They've got everything: funky outfits, a tv show, Jimmy the Robot. I used to watch the show when I was younger, and I've been a fan of theirs ever since. Their music is just plain fun, and let's be honest "I ride an otter like a motorcycle" is probably one of the greatest lyrics ever known to mankind. Some of my favorite songs of their are Super Rad! (my beloved), The Shark Fighter!, Cat with 2 Heads!, and Fashion Zombies!. I'm also just now realizing how many of their songs have an exclamation point in them
Now I was originally going to add some country and bluegrass artists to this list, but I think I'm going to make that into a separate post because I can't talk about bluegrass without talking about my personal journey with both the genre and my Southern culture. Again, my apologies for the long post, but I had fun with it and hopefully maybe gave some interest to some underrated songs and artists.
#thank you so much for enabling me#I had a lot of fun going through songs to list#also if you ever need movie recommendations for any genre or vibe I'm your man#I watch way too many movies lmao#answered asks#ask

LEMMY THROWS SHADE AT SABBATH IN '81 -- ESSENTIALLY CALLS 'EM "HAS-BEENS" FOR CANCELLING A GIG.
PIC(S) INFO: Spotlight on 1981-era MOTÖRHEAD, during their "Ace of Spades" Tour date somewhere in Germany, plus concert tour shots of "Mob Rules" era BLACK SABBATH, also from 1981.
"The bill was to have been topped by the Ronnie James Dio-fronted BLACK SABBATH, with MOTÖRHEAD appearing as special guests, though an 11th-hour cancellation saw Lemmy and company promoted to headliners, with Ozzy Osbourne’s BLIZZARD OF OZZ added to the roster.
Though the latter represented a welcome if slightly ironic bonus, Sabbath’s non-appearance ruffled a few feathers. Talking during his band’s first American tour (supporting Ozzy), Lemmy offered an explanation of his own, telling "Record Mirror":
"Well, look at it… we have an album that went straight to No.1 ["No Sleep ’Til Hammersmith"] and all they have left is a name. Obviously, they’re afraid of us blowing them offstage – I’d feel the same in their position.""

33 years ago, on this day (June 1) Johnny attended the premiere of “Decline of Western Civilization Part 2 - The Metal Years” at Cinerama Dome, in Los Angeles, California.
“Decline of Western Civilization Part 2 - The Metal Years” is a 1988 documentary that follows the late 80's heavy metal scene in Los Angeles. Featuring a mix of live concert footage and interviews with heavy metal performers such as Lemmy (from the British rock band Motörhead), Ozzy Osbourne, Aerosmith, Alice Cooper, Kiss, Megadeth, W.A.S.P. and several unsigned club bands, the documentary is also known for showing what happens on the daily lives of a rock star, such as drug usage, heavily drink, intoxications and fights.
On that day, Johnny attended the premiere with Nicolas Cage, who introduced him to the Hollywood movies world.
> Curiosity: Johnny’s t-shirt.
For some unknown reason, Johnny was wearing his shirt inside out. 😂 Originally, he was wearing a 1988 t-shirt with the logo of the American motorcycle manufacturer, Harley-Davidson Motorcycles...

YYH and Togashi's musical references
I always find new references every time I read the manga, so I’ll probably edit this post in the future with new ones. If anyone knows more refs, please leave a comment or a message and I’ll add in the post giving the credits.
1. International artists: most of the bands and artists are from the rock/metal scene.
Keiko reading UDO in her English Class (v.2, p.98)
UDO is a German heavy metal band founded by the lead vocalist Udo Dirkschneider (ex-Accept) in 1987.
Keiko is reading an adapted version of the lyrics of “Unspoken Words”:
My thoughts are going back - back to the time When I was young to live a life A life of lies - full of lies
Then you came into my life And you've changed so many things That I've done before - that I've done before...
Togashi commented on the Table of Contents in 1991 that he was listening to UDO and Led Zeppelin as BGM. (WSJ issue 6, 1991)
Kuwabara’s “Moter-head” T-shirt (v.3-4, Genkai’s Tournament)
A reference to “Motörhead”, English rock band formed in 1975 by bassist, singer, and songwriter Lemmy (RIP, 2015). We can also see the names of two famous Motörhead‘s albums on his shirt: “Bomber”, 3th studio album (1979), and “Iron Fist”, 5th studio album (1982).
“Sodom” is probably from the German metal band formed in 1981 and “Sabbat” is probably a reference to “Black Sabbath”, English rock band formed in 1968 whose vocalist Ozzy Osbourne is very famous.
Michael Jackson in The Dark Tournament (v.6, p.132)
A man who needs no introduction. Michael Jackson wearing his famous white gloves and 'Smooth Criminal' hat, bringing a thriller night into the Tournament ;-)
The Scalper of the Dark Tournament and AC ϟ DC (v.6, pp. 172-173)
The suit, necktie and newsboy cap have everything to do with Angus Young’s famous costume. He is the co-founder, lead guitarist and songwriter of AC/DC.
So, most of us believe that the ticket seller was modeled after him. “I’m on a Highway to Hell”!
Imajin from Team Rokuyukai and John Lennon (v.6, p.170)
The name “Imajin” is a reference to the song “Imagine”. His character’s design also had some inspiration from John Lennon, such as John's famous round glasses.
Chapter 62 Opening and The Clash (v.7, p.132)
The Clash were an English rock band formed in London in 1976. Yu Yu Hakusho 62nd Opening Act. "The Second Round Begins!!" was inspired by the cover of The Clash’s self-titled debut studio album (1977).
Paul Simonon (bass): Kuwabara;
Mick Jones (guitars): Yusuke;
In Joe Strummer’s place (RIP) there’s a suspicious couple in the background ⬇ XD
Kuwabara and Megallica (v.14, chapter 124. "Fierce Rain...!!)
This is a classic and everyone knows it, but it definitely deserves a mention. The day Kuwabara threw everything away to attend a Megallica’s concert.
A tribute to Metallica or both bands - Megadeth and Metallica - as Dave Mustaine's exit from Metallica and the founding of Megadeth in 1983 was a pivotal moment in the metal scene.
We can also spot a Metallica’s poster on the wall of Kuwabara’s bedroom in volume 6, chapter 46. "Springtime for Kuwabara!!" (p.14)
And another poster above the TV with the letters “ETH” written on it. Probably, a poster of “Megadeth”. It’s hard to tell, because the image is small, but it looks like the skeleton hand of Megadeth’s mascot Vic Rattlehead. (v.6, p.9)
2. Japanese artists: I included some actors as well, as most of them are also singers.
Daisuke Motomoto and Youki Kudoh (v.1, p.197)
Daisuke's type of woman is the famous actress and singer Youki Kudoh.
Shizuru: Bunta Sugawara & Ken Takakura (v.2, p.131)
Shizuru’s favorite type of man was two elder and renowned actors. Both were born in the '30s and appeared in almost 200 Japanese feature films.
Born in 1931, Ken Takakura, known as Ken-san, was an actor and singer. He died of lymphoma on November 10, 2014. Born in 1933, Sugawara was also the model for the design of the One Piece character Sakazuki “Akainu.” He died from liver cancer on November 28, 2014 . Isn’t it a huge coincidence they both passed away of cancer on November 2014?
REBECCA [レベッカ] (v.1, p.192; v.3, p.163)
REBECCA are a Japanese rock band that had a great success in the 80′s, fronted by singer Nokko. Natsuko, Keiko’s friend, says a curiosity about REBECCA’s song “MOON”:
“It's true, there is a voice saying "SENPAI" at the beginning of the bridge” (note: bridge from the song structure).
It is said in the middle of this song, there is a mysterious woman voice calling "senpai" (veteran, senior). Honestly, I’m not sure if I can hear it lol.
There’s also a rumor that the three guys and girl who appear in volume 3 (upper left of page 163) during the lottery of Genkai’s Tournament are REBECCA. What do you think?
Eisaku Yoshida, actor and singer (v.4, p.46)
Kuwabara and Yusuke arrived in front of the Maze Castle in Makai in only 2 hours. Togashi made a joke about it and wrote a small text below the scene:
“Fast as the development of Eisaku Yoshida’s doramas.”
Akiko Matsumoto (v.6, p.152)
The actress and singer Akiko Matsumoto is a Japanese 80's idol. When Yusuke is sleeping in the ship, Kuwabara says Yusuke is so tired that he won’t get up even if Akiko Matsumoto was next to him.
Eriko Tamura in the Dark Tournament (v.6, p.158)
The super famous singer and actress Eriko Tamura appears in a panel during The Dark Tournament in the Hanging Neck Island’s Hotel. It was probably a reference to her manga/anime version of “Idol Densetsu Eriko” (1989).
Kuwabara’s Energy Drink and Pierre Taki (v.6, p.160)
The name of the front man for Japanese synth-pop group “Denki Groove” appears on Kuwabara’s energy drink. I’ve already made a detailed post about it and the polemic involving his name.
Space Battleship Yamato Opening Theme (v.13, p.62)
When the guys are about to leave the Hanging Neck Island, Yusuke starts to sing: “Saaaraaabaa” (Farewell) which is the beginning of the opening theme of the super famous anime “Space Battleship Yamato” (Uchuu Senkan Yamato, 1974), sung by Isao Sasaki.
Sensui, Itsuki and Jun Togawa’s performance on Hit Studio (v.16, p.17)
Sensui spares Itsuki’s life after he confessed he wanted to live one more day to watch the singer Jun Togawa on Hit Studio. Sensui also watches the show. In the anime, the line was changed to “the last episode of the dorama”.
Fun fact: Jun Togawa actually performed a few times on Hit Studio and Togashi said in an interview this was a moment he really experienced.
This performance is from 1984 and Togawa was promoting her debut album as a solo artist “Tamahime-sama”:
youtube
Trivia: to celebrate the 35th anniversary of Jun Togawa’s musical career in 2016, an album alongside the metal band Vampillia entitled "Watashi ga Nakou Hototogizu" ("I Will Sing Like a Cuckoo") was released. Togashi created black & white illustrations for their collaboration:
I know Togashi said in “Yoshirin de Pon!” (1994) that Mukuro was modeled after Kushana (Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind) but Jun Togawa’s famous robotic arm from the 80′s reminds me Mukuro’s. She also performed the song “Radar Man” on Hit Studio wearing the cybernetic arm.
Akiko Wada and the earthquake (v.16, p.119)
When Sensui releases his sacred energy and the ground starts to tremble, a female citizen makes a comment: "Isn’t this Akiko Wada tapping her foot?". Akiko Wada is the famous singer, known as The Queen of the Japanese R&B. If you watch her performances, specially the from the 80s-90s, you’ll notice the peculiar way she shakes her legs and taps her foot while singing. When she debuted, she was also known for her tall stature, large physique and high tone voice.
“Otoko Nara” (v.17. p.171)
After saying goodbye and being dumped by Keiko, Yusuke starts to sing the famous military and wartime song “Otoko Nara” (男なら - “If you are a man”) from 1937. Translation to English
Yusuke: “Otoko nara, larilarila....”
3. Other mentions and references
WSJ issue 25, 1992; v. 6 opening illustration and v.8 cover
According to Togashi’s comments from the Artbook, these guys next to Yusuke were inspired by two black guys Togashi saw on a music video or magazine. But as he doesn’t remember where the inspiration comes from, it’s hard to tell the origin.
Anime: I’m only taking the manga and Togashi’s refs into consideration here. But you can always have fun searching in the animation for other references, like the Oingo Boingo poster in Kuwabara’s bedroom and Roger Dean’s artwork in the Makai landscape.
Other celebrities:
↪ Downtown (v.19, p.114-115): is a Japanese comedy duo consisting of Hitoshi Matsumoto and Masatoshi Hamada. Formed in 1982, they are one of the most influential comedy duos in Japan and famous for hosting variety shows, such as Downtown no Gaki no Tsukai ya Arahende!! Togashi has stated he’s a fan and even the name “Hunter × Hunter” came about while he was watching their TV show, in which the hosts often repeat what they say to make the audience laugh. People believe the TV program Juri, Koto and Ruka were attending in the last volume is a reference to the variety show. Juri calls one of the hosts Yamazaki-san which is probably a reference to Hosei Yamasaki one of the five members of Downtown Gaki no Tsukai's regular cast. The man watching the TV while smoking is Togashi.
↪ Kurama comparing himself to Kazaguruma no Yashichi from the dorama “Mito Komon” (v.5, p.201). I made a post about it.
↪ The family name “Minamino” was taken from the singer Youko Minamino, but other Japanese celebrities were also considered. I made a post about it.
↪ A mention to the late sumo wrestler Kurama Tatsuya (v.13, p.89). When one of Kurama’s senior overhear Kuwabara calling Minamino as Kurama, instead of using his human name, he says: Kurama? (using the kanji of the fighter’s name), the former sekitori?
↪ Byakko bringing up Carl Lewis (v.5, p.57) was hilarious. Kuwabara needed to jump a distance of 10 meters, 2 meters more than Carl Lewis. Probably a reference to the 1991 World Championships in Tokyo and Lewis' greatest achievements during the competition. These chapters from the Saint Beasts saga were being written during this time.
↪ Kuwabara’s name was inspired by two baseball players as Togashi explained in the comics and the databook. But he also mentions some achievements from other baseball players during the series and incorporates them in his sword techniques:
→ Hiromitsu Ochiai (v.4, p.74): The “Ochiai-ryuu Shui-dasha-ken” (The Leading Hitter Ochiai Style Sword) used by Kuwabara to bat Rando’s fireballs technique (Kashou Happa-ken) is a reference to the baseball player Hiromitsu Ochiai. He is considered one of the most important players in the history of Japanese baseball and was given the title of “shui-dasha” (leading hitter), a player who ends the season with the best batting average score. That’s why Kuwabara mentions “shui-dasha” in the name of the technique.
→ Satoshi Inamoto (v.5, p.55): During the fight with Byakko, Kuwabara wants to use his “Teikyo High School Sayonara Two-Run Homer Sword” to bat the Tiger Scream but he is stopped by Kurama.
There’s a small text written below the panel: “August 17, 1991, 12h45PM, hitter Inamoto”. It’s a reference to a match between Teikyo High School and Ikeda High School in 1991. Teikyo High School turned the game around and won thanks to Inamoto’s home run.
↪ Fubuki Sato and Masato Hagiwara (v.17, p.120): while her brother Kaisei likes to watch TV, Fubuki likes the actor, voice actor and professional mahjong player Hagiwara Masato-kun.
↪ Hiei and Medaka Ikeno (v.19, p.88): a woman on TV describes the ET (Hiei) who abducted her. “His height is about Medaka Ikeno”. He is a Japanese comedian known for his short stature, about 149cm, and for being the man whose 'size is same as a tie'.
↪ Arnold Schwarzenegger (v.19, p.113): when Kido goes to the movies, there’s a billboard announcing: “The Crying Game” (on the right) and “Schwarzenegger - Last Action Hero” (on the left). Toguro is said to be modeled after Schwarzenegger’s Terminator, but Togashi mentions in the Yu Yu Hakusho Artbook (2015) that "Younger Toguro is Sato", referring to Koji Sato, the main antagonist of 1989 film "Black Rain”, played by the Japanese actor Yuusaku Matsuda.

When Hair Metal Was King: The Sunset Strip in the 1980’s
Guns N’ Roses was a Los Angeles band. They had all met during the 1980’s on the Sunset Strip. An important part of their story involves the Strip during that time. In order to understand the group as a band, I think it is relevant to take a look at the music scene in LA in the early to mid-1980’s. The Sunset Strip had long been a hotbed of rock music in the 1960’s and the 1970’s. In the late 1970’s, the music scene became grittier and dirtier as bands went from glam rock to punk rock. Yet, everything began to change into decadence with the arrival of Motley Crue in 1981.
A new genre of music, glam or hair metal, began to overtake the Strip fully embraced by Vince Neil, Nikki Sixx, and Tommy Lee of Motley Crue. As they began to make a name for themselves musically at clubs along the Strip, they moved into an apartment right by the Whiskey A Go-Go. They would hold after hours parties at their place that soon took on the stuff of legends. Vince Neil would later say, “We played the Whisky, half the crowd would come back to our house and drink and do blow, smack, Percodan, quaaludes, and whatever else we could get for free… There would be members of punk-scene remnants like 45 Grave and the Circle Jerks coming to our almost nightly parties while guys in metal newborns like Ratt and W.A.S.P. spilled out into the courtyard and the street. Girls would arrive in shifts. One would be climbing out the window while another was coming in the door.” He would go on to say in his autobiography, “We’d get drunk, do crazy amounts of cocaine and walk the circuit in stiletto heels, stumbling all over the place. The Sunset Strip was a cesspool of depravity.” The group would be discovered by a record company talent scout who saw the hundreds of kids wearing tight leather and big hair waiting in line to see them. Soon enough, more and more bands began to pop up including W.A.S.P. and LA Guns. A little later groups like Faster Pussycat Kill and Poison showed up on the scene. These bands begin to do more and more outrageous things in order to bring attention to their live show. For example, W.A.S.P. would throw raw meat into the crowd. Not to be outdone, Motley Crue would have Nikki Sixx pour gasoline on his leather pants, then at some point Vince Neil would set him on fire during the show.
One of the centers of the metal glam scene on the Strip was Tower Records. The store was for the most part completely employed by local musicians. Some would say that when you walked into the place; everybody that worked there looked like they were in Motley Crue. Axl Rose would become a manager at Tower, even hiring Slash to work there until he was fired. Columnist Alison Martino recalls, “Everybody from Elton John to David Bowie to Van Halen, they were all in Tower Records. I saw all of them there, buying their own records. I remember seeing Valerie Bertinelli with her mother at Tower Records the week that ‘Jump!’ came out. They used to have on the wall all the number one singles. I remember she went up to the cover of the ‘Jump!’ 45 and turned it around to see Eddie’s face and left it that way.”
Headbangers would line up all along the Strip at night, so much so that you could not even walk on the sidewalk. They would all be waiting to get into clubs like the Troubadour, Roxy, Gazzara’s, the Whiskey, and more. More than 75 bands would be competing for headlining slots at these clubs, which would eventually include Guns N’ Roses. For a while, this was merely a local music phenomenon until Quiet Riot released their album, Metal Health, eventually reaching number one on the charts. This event changed everything as record companies began to sign Los Angeles-based hair bands left and right from that moment on. Hair metal represented the most popular kind of music in the country. This led to people migrating from the northwest like Duff McKagan or from the Midwest like Izzy Stradlin and Axl Rose to become rich and famous chasing their rock and roll dreams. Another such band was Poison, who came all the way from Pennsylvania sensing that Los Angeles was the only place that they could make their name. As these bands fought for fans along the Strip, advertising on a flyer became ultra competitive. There would be flyers posted everywhere promoting in the most creative of ways usually emphasizing sex and drugs. Each morning, along with the plethora of booze bottles lining the streets, there could be found fliers everywhere making Sunset Boulevard look like New Orleans after Mardi Gras.
Another center for the hair band movement on the Strip was the Rainbow Bar and Grill. This place opened in 1972 to host rock and Hollywood royalty like John Lennon, Ringo Starr, John Belushi, and Elton John. Lemmy Klimster of Motörhead had become a mainstay at the corner of the bar for a very long time playing games on the video machine. Tommy Lee offered up this assessment of the Rainbow. “When the clubs began to close, we’d go to the Rainbow. The place was set up like a circle, with the coolest rockers and richest deviants sitting at the center tables. Guys had to be twenty-one to come into the club, but girls could be eighteen. The guys would sit at their regular spots and the girls would walk around the ring until they were called over to someone’s empty chair... Afterward, everyone would spill out into the parking lot: Randy Rhoads, Ozzy Osbourne’s guitarist, would be hanging upside down from a tree screaming while junkies tried to score dope and everyone else tried to scam on girls.” No matter where you went along the strip at that time, you were bound to see some sort of insanity going on. Stephen Pearcy, lead singer of Ratt recalls, “I saw so many people f*** on the lawns behind Gazzarri’s that I actually got bored of watching and started to throw empty beer cans at them.” For its part, the Rainbow usually only saw people having sex in the bathroom stalls, not its lawn, but on occasion the dumpster.
The strange but true thing about all of these bands trying to get discovered on the Strip was that they were seemingly connected in some way. The 6 degrees of separation of all these groups has been noted by writers looking back at that music scene. Slash almost ended up in the band Poison. Tracii Guns of LA Guns helped to form the Guns found in Guns N’ Roses. GNR had a bit of a feud with Motley Crue, who’s founder Nikki Sixx once played in a band with Tracii Guns. The feud would later escalate to national headlines as guitarist Izzy Stradlin began hitting on Vince Neil‘s wife at a party. Axl Rose then got involved, which saw Vince Neil state on MTV News that he wanted to challenge Rose to a fight anytime, anywhere. For this reason, you cannot compare Seattle’s music scene to the Strip because to this day a lot of those bands that are still connected absolutely hate each other. These musicians would actually be members of multiple bands at any one time. In a VH1 documentary, the drummer from Quiet Riot said that before they were signed to a record deal, he had been in at least five bands at one time. One of the reasons for this also emerged in the fact that playing these clubs did not make you any money. All of these groups that would become very famous and very rich in the next few years were also struggling to find enough to eat or a place to sleep. For their part, Guns N’ Roses lived in a tiny apartment infested with cockroaches and squalor. Journalists have referred to their existence before Appetite For Destruction as street urchins. Their only saving grace was the financial assistance of waitresses and strippers, who served these bands as groupies. The females in Los Angeles at that time were completely enamored with any guy in a hair metal band. Half the time, they did not even care if you were any good or not.
With the arrival of Axl Rose on the music scene, one thing stood out at that time. Word began to spread that there was this singer, who gave off this incredibly intense and mesmerizing energy every time that he performed. The other guys in GNR always had to audition for any group, but Rose was wanted by every band on the scene that did not have a singer. Everyone wanted him to front their band. The second that this happened probably was the beginning of the end as far as Axl acting in any way humble towards his other bandmates. The question now becomes as to how the particular members of Guns N’ Roses actually came together. One answer to that was that Rose truly wanted to be in a band with Izzy Stradlin. They had been in one together with Hollywood Rose, but at the time of GNR’s formation, they were still trying for their own band. As for the other members, it represented a situation of the right place at the right time. Slash could have been in Poison by that time, but he still remained a free agent. Tracii Guns could have decided that he wanted to remain in that group with Axl Rose, but he did not. One important thing to remember is that unlike other groups, the guys in Guns N’ Roses really did not know each other too well when they got together. Axl and Izzy had been friends, while Slash, Steven Adler, and Duff knew each other quite well.
As for the scene itself, by the time of the release of Appetite For Destruction hair metal was slowly beginning to wear out its welcome. The death knell would not occur until the arrival of grunge in 1991. Yet, GNR did contribute just a little bit to this backlash as they represented something that was very anti-hair metal. They went out of their way to make sure the media portrayed them as a rock band like the Rolling Stones and Aerosmith, instead of any kind of hair metal band. Their behavior and actions followed up on this. Bands of that time like Poison and Motley Crue had gotten more and more outrageous and ridiculous in their blatant attempts to gain the attention of this new MTV generation. GNR changed things a little bit because everything that they did from drugs to sex to fights to snarky interviews was meant to be 100% real. For a time, the band had teased their hair and put on glam makeup, but they quickly stopped doing that for a new image. They made an overt attempt to scare the crap out of people showing fans and writers alike that they did not give a shit about anything or anyone, except themselves. This is not to say that each member was completely selfish, but instead that the only thing that mattered in their lives was the band. By the early 1990’s, this camaraderie between band members was slowly withering away as Rose began to exert more and more control over the group. The arrival of Nirvana and the bands from Seattle signaled the end of this music scene being the epicenter of popular rock in the United States. The death of River Phoenix in 1993 at the Viper Room foreshadowed the end of the strip as party central. Soon enough, more and more hotels began to pop up as that part of Los Angeles soon embraced tourists, rather than local musicians.

The film is well known for its many scenes featuring rock star excess. The scenes include:
An extremely intoxicated Chris Holmes of W.A.S.P. is interviewed in a swimming pool, with his mother by his side. He stumbles through the interview, proclaiming himself "a full-blown alcoholic" and "a piece of crap" while pouring what appears to be vodka over himself.
In a hot tub surrounded by scantily dressed young women, Odin lead vocalist Randy O insists his band will become millionaires, more famous than The Doors and be "bigger than Zeppelin". He says that the possibility of superstardom eluding him causes him to ponder suicide.
An interview with L.A. club owner Bill Gazzarri, whose "sexy rock and roll" dance contests at Gazzarri's on the Sunset Strip are presented as being sleazy and sexist.
Discussions with various musicians about the way women in general, and groupies in particular, are treated badly in the metal scene.
Riki Rachtman and Taime Downe, owners of the Cathouse club in L.A., discuss how girls get entry to the club faster if they dress "sleazy."
Paul Stanley of Kiss is interviewed in bed, surrounded from head to toe by three half-naked girls.
Steven Tyler and Joe Perry of Aerosmith talk about spending millions of dollars on drugs.
Ozzy Osbourne, while cooking breakfast in a kitchen, discusses his wild rock and roll lifestyle. In a scene that was later revealed to have been manipulated in post-production, he spills orange juice all over the table, apparently due to uncontrollable shakes.[2] Spheeris also interviews him about sobriety, to which he replies, "It fucking sucks."
An interview with Lemmy from Motörhead. In his autobiography, he claims that Spheeris interviewed him from a distance, possibly in an attempt to make him look stupid.[3]
Candid and sobering interviews from various artists about drug use, abuse, and dying (or nearly dying) from overdoses.
Lastly, Spheeris takes her cameras to Sunset Strip to film the nightlife in 1980s Los Angeles.

What Classic Tune Combines Steve Vai, Zakk Wylde, Ozzy Osbourne, Geezer House Boy and Lemmy Kilmister?|Guitarworld
Zakk Wylde as well as Steve Vai carry out in San Diego throughout the 2016 Creation Axe Tour.
(Photo: © Daniel Knighton/Getty Graphics)
Back in 1994, Ozzy Osbourne and Steve Vai cowrote a handful of songs. Depending on to some sources, Vai was even slated to perform on Ozzy's next cd, the disk that would certainly come to be 1995's Ozzmosis.
For whatever explanation, nonetheless, that didn't happen. In simple fact, only one song from those composing treatments has ever before observed the lighting of time, a five-minute-long ditty contacted "My Little bit of Guy," which blowing wound up on Ozzmosis. And, most importantly, it features lyrics by Motörhead frontman Lemmy Kilmister.
"I wrote a track along with [Lemmy] and Ozzy called 'My Little bit of Guy' that seems on Ozzy's Ozzmosis report," Vai said in December 2015, upon listening to the updates of Lemmy's death at age 70. "Lemmy wrote the verses. If you listen to [them], you can gather an understanding right into deep blue sea softness that was comfortably resting under the outside character. The song is profoundly touching, and when I fulfilled his boy Paul, I discovered just how earnest those verses are actually."
When some delusional fans hear Ozzy's version of "My Little bit of Man," they firmly insist that Vai is actually playing either electricity sitar or even lead guitar-- or each. And also would hold true-- besides the fact that it isn't. Zakk Wylde, Ozzy's guitar player during the time (as well as at the moment of this particular creating), is actually participating in both guitars with-- it must be pointed out-- a large amount of style and also taste. But delay, there
's even more! To complete the remarkable hodgepodge of talent, African-american Sabbath founder Geezer Manservant plays bass on the monitor and Yes/David Bowie legend Rick Wakeman plays keyboards. Ozzmosis is actually the only Ozzy cd to feature House boy, his longtime Sabbath bandmate, on bass. Until now, anyway.Anyway, you can
hear"My Little Male, "which is officially attributed to Osbourne/Kilmister/Vai, below. Appreciate!

MOTÖRMANIA '81 -- LIVE & LOUD IN NYC.
PIC(S) INFO: Spotlight on English rock 'n' roll/metal punk band MOTÖRHEAD, photographed from the stage & pit area during the “Ace of Spades” tour of 1981, performing live at the Palladium Theater, NYC, on February 5, 1981. 📸: Bill O'Leary.
PHOTOGRAPHER'S OVERVIEW: "Although technically not my best work, my photos of MOTÖRHEAD are classic if nothing else. These were shot on the “Ace of Spades” tour while opening for OZZY OSBOURNE at the Palladium Theater in New York City. The “Ace of Spades” album as well as bassist/ vocalist Lemmy have both become iconic in the world of hard rock and heavy metal.
I was fortunate to get to hang out with Lemmy and drummer Phil Taylor when 4 months later they returned to New York City where they played a very small club in midtown Manhattan, I believe called Club 57.
MOTORHEAD were a gigantic influence on the new heavy metal genre called thrash metal, they played fast, they played very loud and they were high energy. I look back on this time and realize how lucky I was to capture the original band at this point in their career."

OZZY OSBOURNE Says He ‘Couldn’t Understand’ What LEMMY Was Trying To Tell Him The Morning MOTÖRHEAD Legend Died
In a new interview with Classic Rock, Ozzy Osbourne revealed that he spoke to Ian “Lemmy” Kilmister on the morning that the legendary MOTÖRHEAD frontman passed away. “He was a good man, Lemmy was,” Ozzy said. “All the guys from MOTÖRHEAD have gone now, from the original band. Nominiert für die Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame
Devo
Janet Jackson
John Prine
Kraftwerk
LL Cool J
MC5
Radiohead
Rage Against The Machine
Roxy Music
Rufus feat. Chaka Khan
Stevie Nicks
The Cure
The Zombies
Todd Rundgren
Wo aber bleiben bitte sehr Bands die den Rock wirklich beeinflusst haben, Bands die den Rock geprägt haben. Bands aus denen Legenden wurden. Bands wie zum Beispiel;
Ohne Cowboys From Hell würde die harte Musik heute in meinen Augen anders klingen.
Nominiert für die Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame was originally published on The Art 2 Rock

EXODUS Frontman Hasn't Seen Any New Metal Bands Who Have Potential To Become Future Icons
RARE BLACK METAL COLLECTIBLES
EXODUS singer Steve "Zetro" Souza has bemoaned the lack of new bands who can take over as festival headliners once all of heavy metal and hard rock's current top draws have retired. Speaking to France's Duke TV, Souza said (see video below): "There's no more Ozzy Osbournes anymore; there's no more BLACK SABBATHs anymore — they're gone. Where's the iconic bands that initially came out with the sounds that you love? "A lot of fans come up to me, and since SLAYER has announced that this is their last tour and they won't be continuing on… Glenn Tipton isn't playing with JUDAS PRIEST anymore — he actually does; he plays three songs in the set. And look, we lost Lemmy a couple of years ago, so MOTÖRHEAD's done. A lot of things can happen. "I've never really seen any band that really impresses me that looks like they're gonna be a JUDAS PRIEST or an IRON MAIDEN — that size of band — and be able to carry on for 40 years with that same push and all the same people and building more fans," he added. "[I'll] be curious to see what happens." Souza is now on his third stint with EXODUS, having previously fronted the band from 1986 to 1993 and 2002 to 2004. A decade following his second departure, Souza returned to the fold in 2014, just in time to appear on the group's latest album, "Blood In Blood Out". Souza has said in recent interviews that EXODUS will wait for guitarist Gary Holt to complete his touring activities with SLAYER before they officially begin work on the follow-up to "Blood In Blood Out".
