Eleven Questions
Tagged by @clarissalopeswriter - thank you kindly!
i. how long have you been writing?
I wrote my first poem at like, 4 years old on my grandfather’s typewriter. It was about flowers. So, a little before then. As a kid, I used to rewrite movie plots in my head.
ii. what are the major themes of your current wip(s)?
You gotta forgive yourself, worth comes from within, make your own destiny, make home where you want it to be/home is where the heart is, etc.
iii. what do you want people to take away from your story once they’ve read it?
Oh man. Anything positive that helps them, really. I don’t like going into stories with this in mind. I draft with a general feeling in the back of my head, like I’d write stories that were supposed to mimic “that feeling you get walking into an old church” and stuff. I just want them to be able to take away something.
iv. would you be excited if people write fanfiction about your wip(s)?
uhhhhhyEaH
v. what’s your go-to writing beverage?
Used to be coffee until I started forgetting I made a beverage and letting it get ice cold, then it became tea. I drink a lot of cold tea when I’m writing.
vi. who is your favorite oc? tell me about them!
Hmmmm. This is tough because I have a clear favorite in each story, but so many stories. From my WIPs here, I think I like Fred Coriander the best. He’s not super prominent, but he’s plot-important. He’s an older gentleman who has a terrible garden in his backyard that produces the weirdest, messed up plants and vegetables. But he is endlessly positive and is the type to roll with whatever life throws at him. His wife left him a while ago, before he came to Linsay, and he’s channeled all of his energy into that little garden. And he brings everyone food that he grew himself, even if it’s weird, and everyone is very supportive of his efforts. He’s basically Gemma’s uncle who asks her for help all the time because he keeps accidentally growing poison ivy, poison oak, and other dangerous plants somehow.
vii. do you feel that mistakes are important learning tools in the writing journey?
The MOST important! I’ve learned so much from the stupid thing’s I’ve done. I wouldn’t be the writer I am today without them.
viii. rank your ocs by their capability in a footchase (either running after or from smth, your choice)
Teva
Mel
Keema
Gemma (first if running to help, though)
Oz
Rangi
The Wanderer
ix. does your wip have romance? tell me about it!! if not tell me about a friendship/important relationship in your wip!!
One of ‘em does. Mel and Gemma are very supportive of each other’s disasters. They have a similar intensity when encountering new discoveries, mess with each other in surprisingly thoughtful ways, and cure each other’s unique type of loneliness. The two met in an interrogation room and then Mel moved herself into Gemma’s house. And then they grew on each other like moss on rocks.
x. do you believe in the advice kill your darlings?
I’ve seen a few interpretations of this phrase, one being killing characters. I’ve always known “kill your darlings” to mean removing things from the story that you like but don’t work, and I fully endorse it. If it’s bogging down the story, messing up some development, or totally unnecessary, get rid of it, even if you love what you wrote right there. Move it to another document or something so you still have it, but if it isn’t working, it isn’t working.
and finally, xi. do you prefer plotting or worldbuilding? why?
Worldbuilding, by far. Plot does not come easy to me. My process usually goes: build world of story, make characters, mine conflict from everything in there/relationships, smash conflict together and hope a plot-jumble comes out. I tend to stick with short stories because they don’t usually require a lot of plot, at least not the ones I write, and let me do some character arcs over a handful of pages.
