Uh oh, another grit post /j
This is a simple recommendation list for pigeon grit. These are the best grits I've found on the market in the USA. (If you're in Australia, look for something like 'pink powder minerals' instead of grit to supplement minerals.)
The absolute best two grits available are the All-in-One Versele-Laga grit and the Jovati grit. Both of these offer a full complement of vitamins and minerals and even some amino acids. (Reminder to get your pigeon some UVB light anyway though, just to be safe.)
It can be a bit hard to find the actual full ingredient list for the Jovati online, but I've seen it through pictures via other people who have bought them, so I know for a fact that it contains Lysine (amino acid) among things I'd like to make sure my pigeons are getting. At least, the versions that I have seen! It's possible the formula has changed since then, but I haven't been alerted if that's happened.
Here's a couple links to these products, just so you can see exactly what I'm pointing at. I have zero affiliate or commission link business going on here, but I want you to be sure you're getting what I suggested you get, even if it's not on the same website.
(Side note, thanks for the thorough labeling VL, I do love that about you.)
I'm not actually sure if anyone else sells the Jovati. I think it's possible its a European product (like the VL) that is only being sold through one USAmerican retailer. But I'm not really sure.
You might be thinking, well okay Evelyn, but what if for some reason I just can't get one of these grits, even if I wait for them to come back into stock, or save up money, or whatever! Don't fear. There's still a third option.
I don't think it is quite as good as these two. It doesn't offer amino acids, and that's something I really am pleased the other two grits are supplying. But I think it's a HELL of a lot better than a granite grit, an oyster-only grit, an un-enhanced red grit, or god forbid nothing at all.
It's the Red Pigeon Grit & Mineral-Plus Mix by Des Moines, to which I will just refer to it as the Des Moines grit. Annoyingly, everywhere it is listed the ingredient list has been cut about in half - I was informed recently that it is almost as complete as our two top favorites up above, but they've neglected to bother telling us so unless you have the physical packaging in your hands. Here's a link to the Des Moines grit.
It is my understanding you can get this stuff on Amazon, and in smaller quantities than the VL and Jovati. Remember that it should last you a good long while, so long as you store it in a cool, dark, dry location, but I understand not wanting to buy so much for only one bird.
Remember, the vitamins these grits are providing are important. The minerals they are providing are important. Pigeons with deficiencies can behave strangely. They can develop serious health problems. They may be trying to eat all the plants in your house. Their eggs might look like utter crap, they might break easily. Their feathers don't look quite as good. Their health needs this support. They can't go out and get it! We're all they have.
AND REMEMBER. THIS IS IMPORTANT.
If your pigeon has not been on an enhanced grit, do not start by free feeding them. You have to ease them into it for at least a couple weeks. They cannot moderate themselves. Provide no more than a pinch or two daily. If you do not do this, you risk them impacting.
Once they have absorbed a comfortable amount of minerals and vitamins they have been lacking, they will moderate themselves just fine, and you can free feed grit with no worries.
If you enjoy my posts, please consider tipping me on ko-fi!

How Has the Boom in Mushroom Exports from India Been Analyzed?
Mushrooms, the delectable and highly nutritious fungi, have enhanced our cuisine for millennia. The expansion of the food industry, rising consumer preferences, and growing awareness of health benefits have significantly boosted mushroom exports from India in recent years. Once a niche product, mushrooms are widely used in the food industry, healthcare, and other fields. With notable market trends and ample room for expansion, 2023 looks promising for the mushroom industry. By 2028, the mushroom market is expected to reach a projected value of USD 63.0 billion, growing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 5.8% based on trade data.
This blog will provide a detailed analysis of mushroom exports from India, including mushroom export data, key trends, challenges, and insights into the mushroom export market.
Is the Mushroom Export Business Profitable in India?
Exporting mushrooms from India, particularly oyster mushrooms, is a lucrative business. According to mushroom export data, between 2019 and 2024, the mushroom market in India is expected to grow at a CAGR of 13.2%. This growth is driven by increased awareness of mushrooms' health benefits, rising demand for organic produce, and the growing popularity of vegetarian and vegan diets.
Mushroom cultivation in India can yield significant profits, reaching up to $190,000 annually. Moreover, mushrooms require less area and are ready for harvest within three weeks of casing (covering compost with a thin layer of sterile soil or materials like chalk powder).
By 2023, the mushroom market in India is expected to be valued at billions of dollars, with a market size of roughly USD 1.18 billion, growing at a healthy rate of over 12% annually.
Top 5 Mushroom Producing States in India
As an agricultural country, India has immense potential to develop various mushroom varieties. Let's explore the top mushroom-producing states in India:
Bihar Bihar is India's largest producer of mushrooms, producing over 28,000 metric tons in 2021-22, accounting for 10.82% of the country's total mushroom production.
Maharashtra Maharashtra is the second-largest producer, contributing over 9% of total production, mainly known for button and shiitake mushrooms.
Odisha Odisha ranks third, producing over 9% of the national total, with a focus on oysters and crimini mushrooms.
Haryana Haryana is the fourth-largest producer, known for cultivating button and oyster mushrooms, contributing over 5% of the national total.
Punjab With over 400 mushroom growers, Punjab has an average annual yield of 45,000 and 48,000 metric tons.
Mushroom Global Market Report 2022-23
The global mushroom market has grown significantly, from $57.18 billion in 2022 to $62.44 billion in 2023, a 9.2% CAGR, according to global mushroom export data. This strong market is projected to maintain its growth, with an expected value of $90.88 billion by 2027, increasing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 9.8%.
The rising demand for vegan foods contributes to this growth as consumers increasingly adopt plant-based diets for health, animal welfare, and environmental reasons. The Asia-Pacific region emerged as the largest market in 2022 and is expected to remain the fastest-growing region during the forecast period. Major mushroom-exporting countries include Australia, Brazil, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Japan, Russia, South Korea, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
How Much Mushroom Does India Export?
According to the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA), India exported 7,768 metric tons of fresh and processed mushrooms worth Rs. 123.64 crore (US$16.16 million) in 2022-23. This represented a 173.8% increase in volume and a 151.8% gain in value compared to 2021-22, as per mushroom export data from India.

In this blog, we will explore the different types of pearls, from the classic Akoya pearls to the exotic Tahitian pearls.
1. Akoya Pearls: Classic and Timeless

Lyon Markets, Roman Ruins, & Australia VS Wales
(Entry by Elena)
The day after the wine tour we got out and saw more of Lyon. We went to Les Halles de Lyon Paul Bocuse which are the most amazing markets. Every stall was overflowing with amazing meats, cheeses, and pastries - but the speciality seemed to be seafood. There were cafes and restaurants all throughout the markets and everyone seemed to be trying the oysters. We bought some goodies and had a delicious Lyonnaise lunch before heading to Lyon Roman ruins. The site used to be a massive theatre and is the best place in France to see Roman ruins. It was amazing to see such a well preserved site and the museum had an amazing collection of Roman items found in the area. So cool! After the ruins we went home for a rest before going to our last Rugby World Cup game in France - Australia VS Wales.
Change of pace but Iâm writing the entry about the Australia VS Wales game because Lachlan doesnât want to talk about it. From what I can understand this game was the worst Australia has ever performed in the history of the Rugby World Cup. Wales beat us 40-6. Australia actually won the world cup in 91â and 99â, so a pretty dramatic fall from grace. Apparently a guy named Eddie Jones is to blame? Lachlan and James keep yelling about him and the whole crowd booed him at the game. Other than that it was a cool experience! The Welsh seemed thrilled so good for them. I had fun! (Lachlanâs crying next to me as I write this)
And thatâs basically it for our wonderful French tour!! Tomorrow morning we wake up early and drive 5 hours back to Paris for the night. Then the next day we begin our trek back to Aus. Weâll be seeing you all soon!

To truly capture the essence of Australian coastal cuisine, it's important to highlight the local seafood specialties of the region where you are located or the event is taking place. For example, if you're in Sydney, featuring Sydney rock oysters would be a fantastic choice. These oysters are known for their distinctive flavour and are often enjoyed fresh or with a squeeze of lemon. Similarly, Moreton Bay bugs, a type of lobster found in Queensland, have sweet and delicate meat that can be showcased in dishes like bug tails with garlic butter or bug salad. By incorporating these regional favourites, you can offer an authentic taste of Australian coastal cuisine.
Freshness is Key
To ensure the seafood you serve is of the highest quality, establish relationships with trusted seafood suppliers who prioritise freshness. Seek out suppliers who have a reputation for sourcing directly from local fishermen and markets. This direct sourcing guarantees that the seafood is as fresh as possible. When receiving seafood deliveries, pay attention to storage and handling techniques. Maintain proper refrigeration to preserve the quality and taste of the seafood until it's time to prepare and serve it.
Diverse Seafood Preparations
Australian coastal cuisine offers a diverse range of seafood preparations that cater to different tastes and dietary preferences. Grilling is a popular cooking method that imparts a smoky flavour while keeping the seafood tender and moist. You can experiment with marinades and sauces to enhance the grilled dishes further. Seafood salads, such as prawn and avocado salad or a citrus-infused crab salad, provide a refreshing and light option for guests. For a more casual approach, consider serving crispy salt and pepper calamari with a tangy dipping sauce or create fish tacos using barramundi or snapper with a vibrant tropical salsa. By offering a variety of preparations, you can cater to a wide range of palates.
Sustainable Seafood Practices
As the demand for seafood continues to rise, it's crucial to prioritise sustainability to protect the oceans and marine life for future generations. When selecting seafood suppliers, choose those who follow sustainable fishing practices and support well-managed fisheries. Look for certifications such as the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) or Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) labels, which indicate that the seafood is sourced responsibly. By showcasing your commitment to sustainability, you align your catering business with the values of environmentally conscious consumers.
Accompaniments and Pairings
To elevate the seafood dining experience, consider incorporating native Australian ingredients into your dishes. Lemon myrtle, with its citrusy and fragrant flavour, can be used to season seafood or as a garnish. Finger limes, known as "citrus caviar," provide bursts of tangy citrus flavour and add a unique texture to seafood dishes like prawn cocktails or ceviche. Indigenous spices like wattleseed and bush tomatoes can be used in marinades or rubs to impart a distinct Australian flavour profile. When it comes to beverage pairings, Australian wines such as Sauvignon Blanc or Chardonnay are known for their crispness and ability to complement seafood. Additionally, locally brewed craft beers, especially pale ales, can offer refreshing and complementary flavours to seafood dishes.
By delving deeper into these aspects, you can create a more comprehensive and detailed article that provides practical insights and guidance for incorporating Australian coastal cuisine and seafood into catering menus.

South Melbourne Market
A market patronised by both tourists and locals; this is certainly more upmarket. The usual fare of antipasti, nuts, fruits, veg, meats are all present. But add to that, little boutiques selling artworks, pottery, clothes and artisanal bread and chocolates. Famous pastry shop, Agathe, resides in this market. Be prepared for the snaking queues!
Your relatives and yourself, head over one Sunday for brunch. Yes, they drove all the way into town for the market. You have been here before, but its worth a revisit. Your first stop is a pie shop â you purchase a chicken and camembert pie. Laden with so much cheese, it truly befits its name. Problem is that is a bit too rich to eat the whole thing at one go. Luckily, you have your cousin who can polish off the remainders for you.Â
Next stop, OYSTERS! Pretty much every market would have a fishmonger selling them. Some markets more appealing than others. South Melbourneâs are appetising with a huge variety of oysters and a high table laden with sauces from Chipotle to Tabasco to homemade Thai chilli sauce. You procure a dozen Kangaroo Islandâs oysters. They are on the smaller side but not as briny as others. You give a few sauces a try, but ultimately, you are a lemon and tabasco fan.
Your cousinâs girlfriend professes not to enjoy seafood very much. Her experience with it being overcooked and fishy. You and your cousin encourage her to give it a taste and she approves! She soon adventures to trying scallop sashimi as well. The scallops werenât bad, but the oysters were definitely the highlight of the visit.
The meal is polished off with some borek which you arenât much of a fan. But you never quite liked eating minced lambâŠor red meat for that matter. You appreciate the bread with the thick Greek yoghurt though.
In between eating, you wander about the shops. You find some amusing trinkets, decide against queuing for a croissant at Agathe and turn down more food. Youâre stuffed and ready to head to Dandenong Mountains for a bit of a walk. For those wondering, Dandenong Mountains is pretty much in the opposite direction. But thatâs Australia for you, you must drive to really enjoy it. Thankfully, your cousin does!Â
