Nach schweren Vorwürfen: Berliner Kulturzentrum Oyoun beantwortet Fragen nicht

Wegen eines Tagesspiegel-Berichts spricht das Oyoun von einer „Schmierenkampagne“ – und ignoriert wichtige Fragen. Gleichzeitig lädt es sich weitere BDS-Anhänger ins Haus.

Offiziell verspricht das Oyoun gegenüber Journalisten eine „transparente Kommunikation“. Man sei bereit, „transparente Informationen bereitzustellen“, heißt es in einer Nachricht. Doch die Realität sieht anders aus.

Nach schweren Vorwürfen gegen das Kulturzentrum möchte das Oyoun eine Reihe von Fragen auch nach mehrfacher Nachfrage nicht beantworten. Insbesondere solche zum Wirken der umstrittenen Mitgründerin, Geschäftsführerin und künstlerischen Leiterin des Hauses, Louna Sbou, bleiben unbeantwortet.Die Tagesspiegel-App Aktuelle Nachrichten, Hintergründe und Analysen direkt auf Ihr Smartphone. Dazu gehört die Frage, weshalb Sbou in ihrer früheren Funktion im Café Be’kech Mitarbeiter anwies, israelische Produkte und Speisen zu boykottieren – und weshalb sie Mitarbeitern sogar verbot, zur Beschreibung von Gerichten das Wort „Israelisch“ auf die Menütafel zu schreiben.

In einer ersten Antwort hatte das Oyoun derartige Boykottanweisungen zunächst bestritten. Allerdings liegen dem Tagesspiegel nicht nur Zeugenaussagen, sondern auch die konkreten Anweisungen vor, die Louna Sbou schriftlich erteilte. Weiterhin beantworten die Verantwortlichen nicht, weshalb das Be’kech, als dessen Mitgründerin und Kuratorin Louna Sbou fungierte, seine Räumlichkeiten für einen Auftritt der verurteilten PFLP-Terroristin Rasmea Odeh zur Verfügung stellen wollte und dann, als Odeh nicht persönlich anwesend sein konnte, die Übertragung ihrer Videobotschaft vor Publikum ermöglichte.

Entsetzte jüdische Studenten erhielten keine Antwort

Drei jüdische Studenten, die der Veranstaltung als Beobachter beiwohnten, wurden damals von Teilnehmern beleidigt. Im Nachgang schrieben sie das Café an und fragten, weshalb es der verurteilten PFLP-Terroristin in diesen Räumen überhaupt eine Plattform gebe. Auch im Hinblick auf einen Eklat im Oktober 2021 schweigt sich das Oyoun bislang zu einer heiklen Frage aus. Damals wollte ein Filmfest in den Räumlichkeiten des Zentrums unter anderem einen Dokumentarfilm über die liberale Ibn-Rushd-Goethe-Moschee zeigen, die von der Frauenrechtlerin Seyran Ateş mitgegründet wurde. Nach der Vorführung war eine Zuschauerdiskussion mit einem Protagonisten des Films geplant.

Oyoun unterband Zuschauerdiskussion

Als das Oyoun von dem Plan erfuhr, schritt es ein. Es zeigte zwar den Dokumentarfilm, unterband jedoch die anschließende Zuschauerdiskussion und ließ stattdessen ein Statement verlesen, in dem man Ateş „Islamophobie“ vorwarf.„Ich habe Lust jemanden zu töten“ Zwölfjährige in Frankreich bedroht Englischlehrerin mit Küchenmesser

Dieser Vorwurf ist perfide, denn tatsächlich ist Ateş praktizierende Muslima und auch Imamin der liberalen Moschee. Allerdings sprechen ihr Islamisten, denen die Berliner Moschee zu liberal ist, immer wieder die Religionszugehörigkeit ab, beschimpfen sie als „Ungläubige“ und bedrohen sie mit dem Tod.

Ich bin damit einverstanden, dass mir per E-Mail interessante Angebote des Tagesspiegels unterbreitet werden. Meine Einwilligung kann ich jederzeit widerrufen.

Wie kam das Oyoun also dazu, Seyran Ateş öffentlich Islamophobie zu unterstellen? Welche Aussagen soll Ateş jemals getätigt haben, die einen solchen Vorwurf rechtfertigen würden?

Auch hierzu schweigt das Haus gegenüber dem Tagesspiegel.

Stattdessen behauptet es nun öffentlich, es sei aktuell Opfer einer „Schmierenkampagne“. Unterstützer streuen gar das Gerücht, kritische Berichterstatter gäben dem Oyoun keinerlei Möglichkeit, zu den Vorwürfen Stellung zu nehmen. Dies ist grob unwahr.

Gruppen zu Gast, die den Hamas-Terror feiern

Nicht beantworten möchte das Oyoun weiterhin die Frage, wieso es wiederholt Organisationen und Personen seine Räumlichkeiten zur Verfügung stellte, die die Existenz Israels als jüdischen Staat delegitimieren – obwohl dies einen klaren Verstoß gegen das „Landeskonzept zur Weiterentwicklung der Antisemitismus-Prävention“ darstellt.

Unbeantwortet bleibt zudem die Frage, weshalb das Oyoun vor diesem Hintergrund dennoch den Gruppen „Palästina Spricht“, „Revolutionäre Linke“ sowie „Palästina Kampagne“ seine Räumlichkeiten zur Verfügung stellte – und ob den Betreibern zum Beispiel entgangen war, dass die „Palästina Kampagne“ nach dem Terror der Hamas am 7. Oktober öffentlich erklärte, sie halte den Terror für gerechtfertigt und unterstütze ihn sogar.

Wie berichtet, läuft die öffentliche Förderung des Kulturzentrums zum Jahresende aus. Die Betreiber des Oyouns protestieren dagegen ab Donnerstag mit einem dreitägigen Festival, zu dem das Oyoun ein weiteres Mal gegen das Landeskonzept verstößt und nicht nur diverse Unterstützer der BDS-Bewegung eingeladen hat, sondern auch erneut der Gruppe „Palästina Spricht“ eine Plattform bieten wird.

Dabei handelt es sich exakt um die Gruppe, deren Auftritt im Oyoun bereits im Mai 2022 zu einem der zahlreichen Eklats geführt hatte. Die Senatsverwaltung stellte schon damals öffentlich klar, dass „Palästina Spricht“ Positionen vertritt, die sich „gegen das Existenzrecht Israels richten und als antisemitisch zu werten sind“. Eine Veranstaltung unter Beteiligung dieser Gruppe dürfe in einer öffentlich geförderten Einrichtung wie dem Oyoun keine Räume zur Verfügung gestellt bekommen. Genau dies wird an diesem Donnerstagabend jedoch ein weiteres Mal passieren.

Die Massaker der Hamas vom 7. Oktober bejubelte „Palästina Spricht“ übrigens als „Lektion für die Befreiung von Gaza“. Bei dem 7. Oktober handle es sich um einen Tag, der gefeiert gehöre.

Just wanted to draw attention to this, but renowned Palestinian musician Ramzi Aburedwan's first record with the Dal'Ouna ensemble, Oyoun Al Kalam has been made digitally available on multiple digital and streaming platforms (spotify, apple music, youtube) !! It's an absolutely beautiful album featuring the voices of Oday Al-Khatib and Noura Madi who were refugee students part of Aburedwan's music school. I cannot overstate how amazing and impactful their singing and vocalization sounds against the beautiful landscape of Aburdewan and Co's instrumentation. I'd also recommend listening to his most acclaimed album Reflections of Palestine while you're at it.

It is also common to hear criticism of Israel described as antisemitic, a fact that has resulted in the paradox of the German state actively suppressing those Jewish voices that do not conform to their expectations. A state-owned cultural center, Oyoun, faces defunding by the Berlin Senate for hosting an evening of “mourning and hope” put together by Jewish Voice for Just Peace in the Middle East, a Jewish organization. On November 9, the city of Frankfurt on Main forbade a planned rally called “Never again fascism – remembering Kristallnacht, fighting anti-Semitism,” apparently due to the organizer’s past support for Palestine. The police continue to selectively enforce bans on such phrases as  “stop genocide,” “free Palestine,” and “stop the war,” often with no prior announcement. A sanctioned protest in Berlin on November 10, organized by a coalition of Jewish and Israeli groups, resulted in several arrests due to the sudden mid-protest banning of some of these phrases. They included the arrest of a Jewish-Israeli woman who held a sign that read: “As a Jew and Israeli: Stop the Genocide in Gaza.” The war in Gaza comes at a moment when every major political party in Germany is lurching rightward on the issue of migration, embracing xenophobic and Islamophobic policies once reserved for the marginalized far right. “Germany cannot accept any more refugees,” Friedrich Merz, the leader of the Christian Democratic Union, the party of Merkel, said. “We have enough antisemitic men in this country.” Scholz, a Social Democrat, appeared on the cover of Der Spiegel in a determined portrait framed by the quote: “We must finally deport on a grand scale.” The specter of antisemitism has proved opportune for mainstream parties, which are threatened by a surge in popularity for the far-right Alternative for Germany, or AfD, whose platform is proudly anti-immigrant. ... Just as reports of attacks on mosques have risen since October 7, recent incidents of antisemitic crimes have produced fear among Jews in Germany. Stars of David have been painted outside Jewish homes; a synagogue in Berlin was firebombed, albeit with no injuries or property damage. These are not isolated events; the number of antisemitic incidents in 2021 was the highest since authorities began tracking them. Yet politicians’ focus on Muslims and migrants as their source runs contrary to the facts. According to the federal police, the “vast majority” of antisemitic crimes – more than 80 percent — are committed by the far right.

The Wafa news agency reports that “dozens” of casualties have resulted from Israel’s targeting of a group of Palestinians at the intersection of al-Jalaa Street and al-Oyoun Street in the centre of Gaza City, which we reported on earlier. At least three bodies arrived at al-Ahli Arab Hospital in Gaza City as well as a number of critical cases, Wafa reports. The number of dead from this attack, which targeted a gathering point for internet access, is expected to rise, Al Jazeera’s Hani Mahmoud reports.

In the past 45 minutes, a drone seems to have fired a missile at a group of people at Jalaa Street, one of the major streets in the centre of Gaza City – very popular and thriving before the war. There was a group of people who was gathering at a place to get an internet connection. The vast majority of people here have family in the southern part and the centre, and trying to get hold of them. This is not the first time we see this pattern of attacks on civilians gathering in large groups, either at a food distribution or internet connection points, or even at a solar-powered point to charge their phones or computers. It has happened repeatedly in the past month; it happened in Sheikh Ridwan, where at least 12 people were killed as they were trying to get an internet connection. So far, what we have learned from civil defence crew members, three [bodies of dead people] were transferred to al-Ahli Arab Hospital. A few more are in critical condition and we are expecting the number of dead to increase.

It is no secret Germany has taken a vehement pro-Israel stance with unconditional support for their genocide against the Palestinians in Gaza. However, their weaponization of antisemitism against migrant communities has presented itself as vehemently authoritarian, anti-democratic, and just plain racist.

So here’s a list just so you know. Each bullet point can have its own dissertation written on it.

Ban the pro-Palestinian organization Samidoun in Germany

Ban pro- Palestinian or anti-Israel protests across the country, leading to many instances of police violence, brutality and racial profiling

Ban keffiyehs, colors of the Palestinian flag, or stickers that say “Free Palestine” in Berlin primary and secondary schools. If violated, the teacher holds the right to call the police.

CDU Leader, Freidrich Merz says: “If there are refugees from Gaza then these are initially an issue for the neighboring countries. Germany cannot absorb any more refugees. We have enough antisemitic young men in the country.”

German President Steinmeier calls for Arab communities to condemn antisemitism

FDP Vice President Kubicki calls for an upper limit for migrants in city districts

“A quarter of the city must not have more than 25 percent migrants, so that no parallel societies emerge. What we see on German streets today is the result of parallel societies that developed because people came together in certain neighborhoods.”

“Asylum seekers should only be distributed among the municipalities if there is a right to remain. In addition, family reunification should be restricted and asylum procedures should be carried out in third countries.”

CDU General Linnemann calls for migrant quotas in schools

“35 percent - in the opinion of CDU General Secretary Linnemann, there should not be more migrants in German schools. He can also imagine a quota for residential areas.”

Linnemann advocated the introduction of compulsory preschool education followed by a language test . “I would only enroll young people who really know the German language.”

“Liberal” politician calls for stripping of German citizenship for people who he believes is “antisemitic.” He also urges that an antisemitism test be present in German naturalisation applications.

Give Israel an extra 300 million euros to continue their genocide of Palestinians

ARD tells its journalists how to talk about dead Palestinians - you guessed it, only in the context of its Hamas’ fault.

Berlin Senate is trying to strip funding from a cultural center in Berlin, Oyoun, because it gave space to anti-Zionist Jews.

I can go on and on and on, but it seems gravely more clear that Germany is utilizing the war on Gaza to carry out their right wing authoritarian fantasies. We can see and expect more to come.

Faeser geht aber nicht den legalen Weg, erst rechtskräftige Urteile zu den verfassungsfeindlichen Inhalten zu holen, sondern greift direkt exekutiv durch. es werden erst Fakten geschaffen, nur um dann eventuell, nachdem der Schaden angerichtet ist, den Prozess um das Vorgehen zu verlieren. das selbe Schema wurde beim Palästinakongress, den Betätigungs- und Einreiseverboten von Abu Ghassan Sitta und Varoufakis, Finanzierungsmitteln von Oyoun, der Stark-Watzinger-Affäre, der From The River to the Sea-Parole und und und verwendet, aber da es sich bei letzteren um Palästinasolidarität gehandelt hat, hat sich die bürgerliche Gesellschaft nicht darum gekümmert. wer Compact hinterhertrauert ist halt zu 99%iger Wahrscheinlichkeit einfach nur sauer, dass sein Lieblingshetzblatt nicht mehr da ist, und da die selben Leute die anderen Übergriffe gutheißen, werden die wohl im großen und ganzen an den Übergriffen nichts ändern.

Sharing this story because it deserves more international attention:

The international cultural center Oyoun in Berlin is at risk of being shut down, because of a Palestinian solidarity event that took place there on Nov. 4th. The event was organized by the German chapter of Jewish Voice for Peace, however Oyoun is still being accused of antisemitism. Basically, they're being shut down for hosting an event by a Jewish organization, which is completely abhorrent.

They've drafted an open letter to the Berlin senate to hopefully change their minds about cutting funding. You can sign this open letter and read the full text in English here
