The Ibadan Forest of Horror:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
On March 22, 2014, in Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria, a group of motorcyclists discovered a dilapidated building in the Soka forest while searching for another driver who had disappeared in the area. After locating the structure, the motorcyclists encountered 23 shackled and severely malnourished individuals. A myriad of body parts, personal belongings, and human bodies in various stages of decomposition were also discovered in the surrounding region.
These particular crimes in the forest are thought to have been orchestrated by a nameless crew of ritualists patronized by affluent Nigerians and politicians who use humans for sacrificial purposes. Some survivors stated that the ritualists responsible kidnapped their victims by claiming to be part of the urban renewal initiative operated by the Oyo State government. However, there appears to be no explicit evidence supporting this theory.
Residents of the area claimed that the Oyo State Police declined to investigate the forest despite receiving numerous reports of previous abductions within the state. Some even asserted they had contacted the authorities after hearing awful screams coming from the forest. Despite the claims, the Oyo State Police still had zero interest in investigating the whereabouts of the savages involved with these disturbing activities.
The buildings have since been eradicated, and the federal government redeveloped the area into Oyo State Comprehensive Model School, bringing the community a revived sense of hope for the coming years. To this day, no suspects in connection with the monstrosities found in the Soka forest have been arrested, and the area is still regarded as dangerous to visit.

What is the Yoruba kingship system?
The Yoruba kingship system is a traditional form of government that has been practiced by the Yoruba people of Nigeria for centuries. The Yoruba kingship system is based on a hierarchy of rulers who are responsible for the governance and administration of their respective territories.
At the top of the Yoruba kingship system is the Ooni of Ife, who is considered to be the spiritual leader of the Yoruba people and the custodian of their cultural heritage. Below the Ooni are other kings and rulers, including the Alaafin of Oyo, the Oba of Benin, and the Alake of Egbaland, among others.
Each king or ruler is responsible for the governance of their own territory or city-state, and they are expected to maintain law and order, promote economic prosperity, and uphold the traditions and customs of the Yoruba people. The kings are also responsible for settling disputes and conflicts within their territories and maintaining good relations with neighboring kingdoms.
The Yoruba kingship system is steeped in tradition and culture, and the roles and responsibilities of the kings are deeply respected by the Yoruba people. Despite the influence of modernization and the Nigerian government, the Yoruba kingship system remains an important aspect of Yoruba culture and identity.

Gov Makinde counters President Tinubu, says states didn’t receive N570bn
Tumblr media
Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has denied a statement by President Bola Tinubu that the federal government gave N570 billion to all the States in the country. Makinde said this while addressing Nigerians in a broadcast during the #EndBadGovernance nationwide protests against hunger and hardship. President Bola Tinubu had said his administration had disbursed ₦570bn to the 36 states, Makinde in a newsletter shared on his X handle on Thursday, said the state was not in the know of such a grant. such a grant. How 'pregnant' passenger stole my car, made me unconscious - 43-yr-old man narrates experience0:01 / 1:07He said, “ “I responded to a question from a concerned citizen of Oyo State regarding the claim that the Federal Government ‘gave’ States over N570 billion as some kind of ‘hardship fund’ for citizens.“ Let me state categorically that this is yet another case of misrepresentation of facts. The said funds were part of the World Bank-assisted NG-CARES project—a Programme for Results intervention. “The World Bank facilitated an intervention to help States in Nigeria with COVID-19 Recovery. CARES means COVID-19 Action Recovery Economic Stimulus.“It was called the Programme for Results because States had to use their money in advance to implement the programme. “After the World Bank verified the amount spent by the State, it reimbursed the States through the platform provided at the Federal level. The Federal Government did not give any State money; they were simply the conduit through which the reimbursements were made to States for money already spent. “It is important to note that the World Bank fund is a loan to States, not a grant. So, States will need to repay this loan. Note also that NG-CARES, which we christened Oyo-CARES in our State, predates the present federal administration.” He further explained that the loan came in two tranches to states, saying Oyo State got ₦5.98 billion in the first tranche and ₦822 million in the second tranche. “So, in direct response to the message, the Federal Government did not give Oyo State any money. We were reimbursed funds (₦5.98 billion in the first instance and ₦822 million in the second instance). We invested in the three result areas of NG-CARES, which includes inputs distribution to smallholder farmers within our State. In fact, when the World Bank saw our model for the distribution of inputs preceded by biometric capturing of beneficiary farmers, they adopted it as the NG-CARES model,” governor Makinde added. ORISHAS IN THE IFA TRADITION
Tumblr media
Orishas, also spelled Orisa, are natural forces or supernatural entities of the universe. These spirits are also referred to as deities or gods of the elements in the Ifa tradition of West Africa. They serve as conduits or intermediaries between humans and the Supreme Being (Olodumare) to benefit and help humans enjoy life.
There are innumerable Orishas in the Yoruba system and its derivatives. Some of the most popular Orishas are Orunmila, Eshu, Ogun, Obatala, Sango, Oya, and Yemoja. These spiritual forces embody elements of nature like the river, ocean, thunder, and wind. They are also linked to unique attributes such as wisdom, peace, love, health, and prosperity. Many people desire to connect with these beloved deities for these reasons and more.
COMMON ORISHA NAMES AND ATTRIBUTES
The following descriptions outline some of the major Orishas in the Ifa tradition and their attributes. Though keep in mind that these Orishas are revered in many traditions outside of Nigeria. And each society has its own beliefs surrounding the character and nature of these deities within their culture.
ORUNMILA
Orunmila is the Grand Priest of Ifa. He is the first Orisha to be reckoned with in the history of the Ifa tradition. Orunmila brought the wisdom of Olodumare (the Creator) to earth. The Yoruba people venerate Orunmila as a prophet of Ifa, the spirit of destiny, and Orisha of wisdom and knowledge.
ESHU
Eshu, also known as Esu or Elegba, is another prominent Orisha of the Ifa spiritual system. This deity understands all the languages spoken in the world and serves as a messenger between humans and the gods. As the harbinger of rewards and punishment, Eshu often instills a sense of fear or trepidation in some. He is known for his pranks, cruelty, unpredictability, and disruptions. Hence, he is often referred to as the ‘trickster god.’

Spirits of Africa Numerology Deck // Asanee 44
OGUN
Ogun is the elemental deity of iron, as he was a warrior during his sojourn on earth. He cleared the way for other Orishas to gain entrance to the planet using a metal ax and the help of a dog.
OSUN
Osun also spelled Oshun, is popularly referred to as the river goddess. Linked to purity, fruitfulness, fertility, calmness, and love, Oshun embraces the attributes of water. She also embodies human characteristics like jealousy, spite, and vanity.
OBATALA
Obatala is one of the most powerful and oldest Orisha in the Ifa religion. He is referred to as the king of white cloth as he is a tranquil judge. Greatly associated with forgiveness, honesty, peace, purity, and purpose, this Orisha is credited with the creation of humans.
SANGO
Sango or Shango governs the elements of thunder and lightning. He was once a king of the great Oyo Empire. And as such, Sango is one of the most revered Orishas in Yorubaland. The name Shango means to strike, and when annoyed, he brings thunder to burn the enemies or offenders of his children.
OYA
Oya is commonly known as the powerful goddess of storms. She comes before thunder in the form of lighting and is a favorite wife of Shango in some traditions. The name Oya means physical action or ‘she tore.’ Oya symbolically depicts the air that humans breathe as she can bring about life or death in the form of hurricanes, storms, or tornadoes.
YEMOJA
Yemoja is specifically a water spirit and is often depicted as a mermaid goddess. She is regarded as the mother of all the Orishas (deities) and the giver of life in the Ifa religion. She is believed to have originated from Tapa (Iganna) in the Oke Ogun area, Ogun State, Nigeria. Like Oshun, she is also known as a deity of fertility though her purview is the ocean rather than rivers. She protects sailors, dockworkers, fishers, swimmers, and others who travel by sea.
SUMMARY
As indicated, the Orishas in the Ifa tradition are innumerable. They are seen as the messengers of Olodumare, the Supreme Being. Each Orisha has its own distinct personality and set of characteristics that can be called upon to help guide an individual throughout life. Through offerings and rituals, individuals seek to honor and communicate with these powerful forces to receive guidance and direction.
As one grows in your knowledge and understanding of the tradition, one will encounter more and more Orishas. As such, one will grow and advance in knowledge about the character of these beings. And in turn, one can benefit from the many blessings and gifts of these sacred energies.

So in Victoria 3 the transatlantic slave trade is represented by decentralized nations (which you can’t play as currently) with the law “slave trade” just passively sending slaves to centralized nations that also have “slave trade” and i noticed that several states which grew wealthy and powerful off the slave trade such as Oyo and Dahomey are centralized which I mean yeah that’s literally correct bc they absolutely did have centralized governments but it also means they get to push back the issue of how to represent the player controlling not just a nation with slaves but one whose economy revolves around the “export” side of the transatlantic slave trade (which is what states like Dahomey did but that’s not represented in the game). And you can’t dodge the issue when Brazil allowed the importation of slaves until the entire practice was abolished jn 1877
Which means when they do get around to making decentralized nations playable (which they’ve said they would) it won’t just be “Now you can help indigenous nations in America fight back!” but the slave trade topic will kinda come back up. I’m guessing they stick to keeping it kinda abstract and be something that doesn’t transfer any profits to the player or could be described as a “slave export simulator” but is a thing that happens and should be one of the first things to get rid of if you’re gonna industrialize. Maybe add something that a decline in the overseas trade practically inevitable

As preparations intensify for the Edo State governorship election on September 21, 2024, key figures within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have converged in Benin City. Among the prominent attendees are former Vice President and 2023 presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar and Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara. Their presence at the grand finale rally in Oredo Local Government Area highlights the PDP's determination to secure victory in the upcoming election.   The event, which saw the participation of most PDP governors, was marked by the conspicuous absence of Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde. This comes amid rising tensions within the party following an outburst by Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, who publicly rebuked Governor Fubara and expressed discontent with the state of the PDP in Rivers. UNIBEN Students Trapped as Storey Building Collapses Amid Downpour in Benin Wike, a former Rivers governor and a central figure in the PDP, recently declared that he would not support Fubara in future political endeavors. Speaking in an interview on September 13, Wike alleged that those who worked to secure Fubara's victory were sidelined after the election. He also indicated he would remain neutral in the Edo election, refusing to back either the PDP’s candidate, Asue Ighodalo, or the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate.   Wike's comments have added a layer of complexity to the PDP's campaign efforts. The rift between him and Fubara, coupled with his strained relationship with Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki, underscores the internal challenges the party faces as it heads into the election. Viral Video of Tinubu Sneaking Out of UK Urgent Treatment Centre Surfaces Online Despite these tensions, Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed, who chairs the PDP Governors’ Forum, has taken charge of rallying support for the party. The list of governors present at the grand finale was notable for the exclusion of Makinde, raising questions about the unity of the PDP's leadership at this critical juncture. Read Also: Nigeria’s FX Reserves Surge by $621.2 Million in 10 Days, The PDP hopes to retain control of Edo State, with its candidate, Asue Ighodalo, vying to succeed Obaseki. In the lead-up to the election, the party has sought to downplay internal divisions and project a united front.   Meanwhile, spiritual leader Primate Elijah Ayodele has weighed in on the race, predicting that the PDP’s candidate may be rigged out using the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BIVAS). He warned that the state would face hardship if any party other than the PDP wins the election.   As the election day approaches, all eyes remain on Edo, where the PDP’s ability to navigate its internal struggles could be key to determining the outcome.

FG and state governments fund the procurement of meters with N100 billion naira
Tumblr media
Prepaid power meters will be purchased thanks to a successful N100 billion fundraising campaign spearheaded by the federal and state governments. Our correspondent reported on this news made by Minister of Power Adebayo Adelabu during a briefing in Ibadan, Oyo State, under the Presidential Meter Initiative (PMI) program. President Bola Tinubu's administration is working to address Nigeria's meter deficit by promoting adequate metering and promoting greater openness. Adelabu noted that many customers are unwilling to pay bills due to unsatisfactory billing methods by power distribution firms. Currently, over five million of Nigeria's twelve million electricity users are metered, with a shortage of over seven million meters. President Tinubu has established the Presidential Meter Initiative and appointed a Presidential Meeting Council to address the meter gap. The group, chaired by Adelabu and supervised by the President's Senior Advisor on Energy, aims to acquire and install at least two million meters annually over the next five years. With N100 billion available for meter purchases through state and federal resources, the government is committed to addressing this issue. “The World Bank has already issued contracts for meter procurement, with meters set to be imported and assembled locally. We are balancing international and national competitive bidding processes. Meter importation will begin before the end of the year,” he added. Adelabu highlighted the increased availability of meters, allowing Distribution Companies to sell them directly from suppliers, but acknowledged that exchange rate changes have increased meter costs from N80,000 to N120,000, emphasizing the need for continued financing.                          Tribal Marks: The African Tattoo
Tribal marks, also known as scarification, is a traditional practice that has been used by various ethnic groups in Africa for centuries. It involves cutting or scarring the skin in a specific pattern or design, usually on the face, and is typically done during childhood or adolescence.
The marks are used to identify a person's tribe or ethnic group, and can also serve as a form of beauty or adornment.
The tradition of tribal marks varies among different ethnic groups and regions in Africa. In Nigeria for instance, it's mostly practiced by ethnic groups such as the Yoruba, Igbo, and Efik. Each ethnic group has its own unique designs and patterns, and the marks can have different meanings or symbolic significance.
Among the Efik, the marks are used as a symbol of beauty, and young girls would be scarred with intricate designs as part of their initiation into womanhood.
The tradition of tribal marks has been on the decline in recent years, as many people opt for other forms of self-expression or choose not to have them at all.
Some people have abandoned the tradition because of the stigma associated with the marks and discrimination that is faced by those who have them.
Additionally, the government of Nigeria banned the practice in the late 1970s, although enforcement of the ban has been lax and it's still being practiced by some communities.
It's worth noting that the tradition of scarification is not limited to Africa, and has been practiced in other parts of the world, including Oceania, Asia, and the Americas.

Mr Akeem is royal-born, so he has long stripes on his face.
"It is like a football jersey," he quips, adding that they made him popular in the local market.
On a serious note, Mr Akeem says he regards the scars as sacred, and does not believe people should mark their faces just for beautification.
This need for identification through facial marks was also strong in northern Nigeria, especially among the Gobir people of Sokoto state.
Tumblr media
Ibrahim Makkuwana's ancestors, pastoralists from Gubur in present-day Sokoto, did not have facial marks. But, he said, as they moved around looking for farming land, "they fought many battles and conquered many places".
They then decided to make distinctive marks on their cheeks, "akin to the ones their animals had, which would help them in identifying their kinsmen during battles", Mr Makkuwana says.
"That was the origin of our marks," he tells the BBC.
But there is also a distinction between the Gobirawas.
Those with six scars on one cheek and seven on the other have both parents from royalty. Those with six marks on both sides have only their mothers from the royal family.
Tumblr media
Then there are the children of butchers, with nine scars on one side and 11 on the other, while those with five and six marks on either side trace their lineage to hunters.
As for fishermen, they have distinct marks drawn up to their ears.
Meanwhile, among the Yorubas and Igbos of southern Nigeria, some marks are linked to life and death.
There was a belief in their communities that some children were destined to die before puberty.
Known as Abiku and Ogbanje respectively by the two ethnic groups, these children were believed, by the Yoruba, to belong to a coven of demons living in large iroko and baobab trees.
It was common for women to lose several children at a young age in succession, and it was thought it was the same child, reappearing again and again to torment their mother.
Such children were then marked to make them unrecognisable to their spirit mates so they would stay alive.
Many of these infant deaths are now known to be caused by sickle cell anaemia, an inherited disorder common among African people.
Tumblr media
Yakub Lawal in Ibadan in south-western Oyo state, was marked as an Abiku.
"This is not my first sojourn to earth, I have been here before," he says.
"I died thrice, and on my fourth return I was given these marks to stop me from returning to the spirit world," he adds.
Closely related to stories of the Abiku and Ogbanje are those whose marks are in memory of a departed family member or one who has been "reborn".

Steer clear of our internal issues, FG warns foreign powers
Tumblr media
ABUJA — The Federal Government yesterday warned foreign countries to steer clear of the nation’s internal affairs. The warning came against the backdrop of foreign flags being flown during the ongoing protest against hardship in the country, especially in some northern states, including Kano, Kaduna and Zamfara, and the arrest of some foreigners as sponsors of the protest. This came as the protest, which had thawed in most states where it was held, continued in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, yesterday, as protesters and some journalists were attacked by thugs who infiltrated the protest. The Nigerian Army has also detained the soldier who fired the shot that killed a 16-year-old boy in Zaria, Kaduna State, on Tuesday evening, saying he was being investigated. Also, the Plateau and Bauchi governments which imposed a curfew in the heat of the protest earlier in the week, have relaxed it, as normalcy returned to the two states yesterday. FG warns foreign countries on interference The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, who gave the warning while briefing members of the Diplomatic Corps in Abuja, however, highlighted the importance of cordial international relationships. Recall that the protest, which gained momentum in major cities, such as Lagos, Benin, Osun, Oyo, Kano, Gombe, Yobe, Borno, Niger, Kebbi, Abuja, and other northern towns, was marked by violence, and that at least six Spaniards were arrested in Kano in connection with the protest. The minister appealed for continued collaboration from the international community to support Nigeria’s efforts in overcoming its current challenges and achieving a better future for all Nigerians. He warned: “While the government continues to work hard through the various reform programmes and measures to address challenges facing Nigeria and Nigerians, it is pertinent to remind us that no nation tolerates foreign interference in its domestic affairs and that of its citizens. Nigeria is not an exception. “The government will take appropriate action against any foreign entity residing in Nigeria that is found to have directly or indirectly supported the protesters by whatever means or seeks to interfere in the internal affairs of the country. “Nigeria cherishes and continues to value the cordial relationships that happily subsist between her and your countries and organisations and will not do anything to undermine or take for granted such relationships. “Indeed, more than any time before now, we solicit your understanding and collaboration in the ongoing efforts of the Federal Government in addressing the economic challenges confronting the country, to achieve a better life for every Nigerians at home and abroad.’’ In his address at the meeting, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, reaffirmed the government’s support for peaceful assembly and freedom of expression, while committing to investigating the violence and bringing those responsible for violence to justice. Idris thanked the diplomatic community for their support and assured that the worst of the unrest is over.He expressed optimism that the government’s policy interventions would soon yield positive results for the nation. “I want to assure your excellencies that the Federal Government has launched an investigation into the violence that we saw in the last week, to identify and bring to justice all those responsible.“ We are committed to preventing the recurrence of such unfortunate incidents in the future. I also want to thank you individually and collectively for your support and understanding during that difficult period. “I want to assure you that the worst is over, and we can now as a nation march forward to enjoy the fruit of all the policy and programme interventions being implemented. I thank you for your kind attention,” he stated. We’re probing 7 Polish nationals arrested over Russian flags in Kano— DSS Meanwhile, the Department of State Services, DSS, yesterday, revealed that it is investigating seven Polish nationals who were arrested in Kano over their alleged involvement in the widespread waving of the Russian flag during the protest. Speaking during a meeting in Abuja on Wednesday with members of the diplomatic corps, the DSS spokesperson, Peter Afunanya said the Polish nationals were arrested in connection with the waving of Russian flags during the protest.
