Confession: Owen Corley doesn't just crave huge cocks, he needs them. That's why he and the Freelancer were together for so long. Unfortunately, it's why he could not resist The Monitor.

Anthem prompt: the breath you take before waking up
My angsty babies. So. Much. Angst.
Piper doesn't know Owen watches her sleep. He usually wakes much earlier than she does and is content to watch her until she wakes, drawn to how peaceful she looks when she sleeps. He'd even gotten good at telling when she was about to wake. She'd take a much deeper breath and let out a little groan as she exhaled. He'd close his eyes again before she opened hers so she never caught him staring.
Being in love with your best friend was hard.

Owen: I don’t really have any friends.
Freelancer: Those are bold words for someone in hugging range.

owen tried, consistently, to communicate his needs. it wasn’t perfect and they both need to sit down and have a legitimate heart-to-heart about what they require from each other to make this work, mush/awkwardness and all, BUT the point is that he did put in some effort.
i feel like what’s really really bothering me about all of this is that it’s a known fact that with one confirmed exception that we know of (the monitor), being both a cypher and a lancer is pretty much out of the question. i guess that’s why the freelancer and haluk acted like he was being unreasonable, especially as things continued to escalate while he can barely even fly.
to owen, being a freelancer is about how becoming More, becoming a Hero- even if the lancers aren’t really seen as such anymore. he wants to change that, he wants so desperately to be loved, to be seen, to be wanted. he wants to fight the bad guys and save his people. he wants them to depend on him so he can depend on their attention and love.
he wears these feelings on his sleeve despite acting as if he’s ~mysterious~. he wants his mask to be jovial and opaque, but he also cannot Deal with the thought of someone not understanding him, especially if it’s someone he cares for. so, he tries to hide it in plain sight. overshare, overshare- oh, no, i was Kidding, i can’t believe you really believed that! could you imagine if i shared what was Really happening in my head? ha!!!
idk where i’m going with this but it’s so upsetting that he’s always on the freelancer’s side just to be brushed off when he mentions becoming a lancer without even being reminded of the gravity what he’s trying to accomplish is. how it’s supposedly impossible. it’s not like the freelancer actually believed he could do it at any point.
he’s literally dealing with his own delusions of grandeur that might have been under control for a while if the freelancer kept vaguely enabling him by beating around the bush, but the sudden change and reintroduction of, in owen’s mind, the freelancer’s A team really screwed him up!
he went from being fine with his position but not Content to seeing his partner, his friend, his livelihood slipping away and not knowing how to handle it on a personal level. and then you add in the fact that his entire HOME was in jeopardy- the people he’s come to care for, the people who might one day love him if he could only get to where he NEEDED to... he could have it all if they just gave him a chance.
his desperation wasn’t rooted in being power hungry or wanting revenge. he was scared. he was desperate. he saw everything, all the possibilities of a dominion-ruled world, a world where he lost the freelancer, a world where he lost his home, a world where he was back at square one, fighting to survive again.
anyway i haven’t slept yet and i’m about to cry over this man again so i shall end my post here.
