Heat rewatch #324 (shockingly I have not actually seen it this many times) and going OHHH yes well of course this film is about Fathers and Daughters in such an anxiogenic, spectral way that I barely wanted to acknowledge it at first, and it was only when the novel came out that this element became unignorable and targeted at me personally. (JESSICA Matzoukas, oh my god.) I was thinking about how the photographs on the wall in the Gustafson home were taken by Jessie Mann; that the initials on the stolen truck are of his four daughters (RAJA). He casually points this out in the director's commentary and you're like Oh, OK!!! This is so baked into the structure of the film that even Mann, who is diligently tightlipped about his own neuroses, is like, "Just FYI I am going to ensure this whole thing is haunted from the ground up :)"
The concept I find myself circling around in trying to make sense of it is Derrida's reading of Kierkegaard and the Akedah. Or like a hybrid of that + the Oresteia. One of the many fascinating things about Lt. Hanna as a character is his CONSTANT, frankly obsessive awareness of the precarities specific to teenage girlhood. Obviously part of this inevitably stems from his line of work. But the way he compartmentalizes it with respect to his own personal role as a stepfather...... it's almost as if he fears contamination, even if only subconsciously. Men are dangerous to girls; by extension, he is dangerous to girls, particularly since he has this Will Graham-esque empathic approach to criminal investigation. (My own conjecture: I think those creepy blink-and-you'll-miss-them doll parts that are hanging above the dining room table in the Gustafson house are Mann riffing on the aesthetic dread of Hans Bellmer.) By severing himself from the domestic sphere in this crucial emotional way, he is, like most Mann protagonists, Doing Risk Management. In this case it's more of a psychological, symbolic exercise than the practical kind McCauley concerns himself with, where the consequences of interpersonal attachment are more direct, tangible, and perilous. But the irony of course is that this "protective" disengagement is a significant catalyst for Lauren's suicide attempt, and it's his attention she is soliciting, his facsimile of the home (hotel room) that she invades. "She chose you."
Curiously, Hanna occupies "Fatherhood" almost exclusively in this abstracted, civic dimension and even his subjective experience of obligation (I.E., of guilt!) stems more from duty than blood instinct. (Peripherally related but significant is that Hanna apparently first tried to BECOME A LAWYER before realizing he was too fucked up from Vietnam to do anything except relive the brutal destructive thrill of Senseless Carnage Over and Over Again, Forever. So he became a cop. LOL.) One of Mann's favorite literary tropes that he transposes onto his cinematic storytelling is reproductive failure and everything that this metaphorically represents. Vincent Hanna cannot become a biological father and the novel frames this as a curse he mistakenly displaces on some mysterious anomaly that is nevertheless conveniently localized within the woman. (It is the wife who miscarries and at no point does he ever wonder about matters of, say, virility. LOL again.) He is desperate to prevent the destruction and dissolution of other families because he cannot abide the damage wrought upon Women and Girls — note the phrasing when he threatens McCauley at the diner, "if it's between you and some poor bastard whose wife you're going to turn into a widow" — but the Derridean trade-off is that he sacrifices his own. By pursuing the responsibility to one he necessarily denies that which he owes to the others; to heed the call to justice by a grieving mother and her dead daughter — both strangers to him — he defaults on the debts incurred by the marriage contract. MICHAEL, why would you do this to me.

'𝐓𝐢𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐨 𝐰𝐚𝐭𝐜𝐡 𝐉𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐥𝐞 𝐉𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐥𝐞~
'Tis the season to watch Jingle Jangle
The holiday season is approaching. And if you still don't believe it's the most delightful time of the year, Netflix has a great Christmas-themed musical that is just for you. I bet you will feel the happiness within you and even with the people around you when you get to watch this. Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Journey is a suitable and even motivating movie to watch, kids can watch this and even adults too.
Jeronicus Jangle (Forest Whitaker) is such a sensational innovator who once was happy with his shop and family, but now happened to fall down the crack. It all began when his apprentice Gustafson (Keagan-Michael Key), though he thought that he is loyal to him but seems like he is not when he started robbing his greatest inventions, including and stimulated by the talking matador doll, Don Juan (Ricky Martin). Sadly, Jeronicus' wife passed away, his heart was so heartbroken by the loss of his inventions and even the loss of his wife. Also, his daughter had to relocate with her grandchild, Journey (Madalen Mills). And Jeronicus now has to figure out how to reopen himself to love while simultaneously saving his shop from bankruptcy. The bank would only take a breakthrough innovation as insurance. The bond involving Jeronicus and his granddaughter Journey has been at the emotional core of the tale and what works in "Jingle Jangle," because they both learn things from one other that allow them to grow as humans. A section of "Jingle Jangle" swerves into a sci-fi fantasy thriller, complete with the traditional "racing against time" pursuit sequence.
It has a cherry-on-top cast film. The primarily Black cast of characters and the main protagonist, a girl with great imagination and an aptitude for science, engineering, and arithmetic, might influence children. There are some other dazzling orchestral pieces in the Christmas film, as well as uplifting sentiments like families, traditions, patience, reconciliation, and exploration.
However, "Jingle Jangle" is primarily a heartwarming story about how compassion can reignite faith and help families get through difficult times. The plot is excellent; I was both fascinated and moved by it. It has a good deal of comedy, as well as firmness and soul. All of this is aided by the delightful effects, which are consistent through most of the. Stop-motion animation is often used creatively.
All I can say is that Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Journey is a wonderful new addition to the Holiday film fiction, and I'm pleased to spend 2 hours of my time watching this. If you enjoy family flicks, musicals, or Christmas movies, this is the film for you. I am sure in my prediction that it would become a Holiday must-have. And, let's face it, given the year we've all seemed to have, you owe yourself a little happiness. Now go and get your family and spend some time watching this on Netflix!

Grading every team in WNBA’s chaotic 2020 offseason
Photo by Ned Dishman/NBAE via Getty Images
Four stars moved teams, and everyone else tried to keep pace. The WNBA’s superteam movement is here.
The 2020 WNBA offseason is winding down after a full week of the most exciting player movement the league has ever seen. Four game-changing pieces flipped teams in Skylar Diggins-Smith, DeWanna Bonner, Kristi Toliver and Angel McCoughtry, while other teams quietly re-tooled in the W’s new age of superteams.
So who’s made out best so far?
Here’s a rundown of how all 12 teams have done.
Atlanta Dream
Additions: Kalani Brown, Glory Johnson, Alexis Jones, Shekinna Stricklen
Departures: Alex Bentley is still a free agent, Marie Gulich, Brittney Sykes
Most questionable decision: None
The Dream won’t be title contenders in 2020, and their offseason decisions prove they know that. In an effort to rebuild, they shipped out guard Brittney Sykes, on an expiring contract, to land 2019 No. 7 pick Kalani Brown from the Sparks.
Brown was the best player on Baylor’s championship team, and the 6’7 center could be a great building piece for Atlanta. They also signed wing Shekinna Stricklen, a career 38 percent three-point shooter, to a two-year deal, and quality starter Glory Johnson to a one-year deal. The Dream have eyes towards the future, but also gave reason for fans to come watch right now.
Grade: B+
Chicago Sky
Additions: Sydney Colson, Azura Stevens
Re-signings: Courtney Vandersloot and Allie Quigley are expected to re-sign, Stefanie Dolson, Kahleah Copper
Departures: Astou Ndour, Katie Lou Samuelson
Most questionable decision: Trading Ndour for a 2021 first-round pick
The Sky swung and missed on the best free agents available, leaving them steps behind the Mystics, Aces, Sparks, Sun, Mercury and Storm. So instead, they made minor moves, hoping Diamond DeShields breaks out into an MVP candidate to boost the team closer to contention.
The team traded Samuelson along with a first-round pick to land Stevens, a center who was injured for almost all of last season (and who the team could’ve drafted in 2018.) That was a questionable move with a steep asking price. Making a salary cap decision to ship a talented stretch big in Ndour for a first-round pick was confusing, too. The Sky didn’t get much better this offseason.
Grade: B-
Connecticut Sun
Additions: DeWannna Bonner
Re-signings: Natisha Hiedeman, Bria Holmes, Jonquel Jones
Departures: Shekinna Stricklen, Morgan Tuck, maybe restricted free agent Courtney Williams
Most questionable decision: None
The Sun landed one of the big four free agents in Bonner, finally erasing the “we don’t have a superstar” label the team threw on itself en route to the WNBA Finals. In fact, now they have two, as the team re-signed center Jonquel Jones. The future of restricted free agent point guard Courtney Williams is still in question, but if she returns, the Sun have unquestionably improved from last year’s great team.
Grade: A
Dallas Wings
Additions: Astou Ndour, Katie Lou Samuelson
Re-signings: Megan Gustafson, Isabelle Harrison, Moriah Jefferson, Imani McGee-Stafford
Departures: Glory Johnson, Skylar Diggins-Smith, Azura Stevens
Most questionable decision: Trading Stevens, and not receiving any players in return for Diggins-Smith
The Wings have one job now: build around Arike Ogunbowale, who was one of the league’s best scorers as just a rookie. To an extent, Dallas has done that by trading for Samuelson, a premier floor-spacing wing and Ndour, a three-point shooting 6’5 big.
Disappointingly, though, Dallas gave up on Stevens, a second-year big from UConn who, if healthy, could become one of the best players in her draft class, for Samuelson. The trade netted the team an additional 2021 first-round pick, which is a win, but may not make up for how valuable Stevens may be. The team also landed three picks for Diggins-Smith, and no players at all. Picks sound nice on paper, but how many rookies can the team expect to keep? The Wings have four of the first nine picks in the 2020 draft.
Grade: B
Indiana Fever
Additions: None
Re-signings: Betnijah Laney, Tiffany Mitchell
Departures: None
Most questionable decision: N/A
The Fever re-signed their restricted free agents, Betnijah Laney and Tiffany Mitchell, and have done nothing else. They’re still sure to miss the playoffs, but the growth of Kelsey Mitchell and Tierra McCowan will be worth watching. The post-Tamika Catchings rebuild keeps (slowly) rolling.
Grade: C
Las Vegas Aces
Additions: Angel McCoughtry, Danielle Robinson
Re-signings: Liz Cambage is expected to re-sign
Departures: Sydney Colson, with Sugar Rodgers, Carolyn Swords and Tamera Young as unsigned free agents
Most questionable decision: Signing McCoughtry
No team in the WNBA has more talent than Las Vegas. The question is if it’s the right talent. The Aces’ problems last year were mostly the result of poor floor-spacing between their two bigs, Liz Cambage and A’ja Wilson. In response, Vegas signed a sub-30 percent three-point shooter coming off major injury in McCoughtry, and added Robinson, a career 13 percent long-distance shooter.
With the Mystics, Storm and Sun stretching the floor on offense and swarming with switchable defensive bigs on defense, I’m not sure how Vegas catches up.
Grade: C+
Photo by Adam Pantozzi/NBAE via Getty Images
Los Angeles Sparks
Additions: Marie Gulich, Kristi Toliver, Brittney Sykes
Re-signings: Chelsea Gray is expected to re-sign, Tierra Ruffin-Pratt
Departures: Alana Beard (retirement), Kalani Brown, Alexis Jones
Most questionable decision: Signing Toliver to a three-year maximum deal
The Sparks got better, and that’s important as Candace Parker nears the end of her career. Poaching Toliver, who helped the team win a title in 2016, was huge. Not only did the signing take away from the reigning champs, but it added a floor-spacer and leader to a team that desperately needed both.
Will signing Toliver, a 33-year-old who nearly missed half of last season due to injury, to a long-term contract bite LA in the future? Maybe. But with Nneka Ogwumike, Gray and Parker all together and healthy now, the team had to take this chance to win now.
Grade: A-
Minnesota Lynx
Additions: None
Departures: Temi Fagbenle is still a free agent, Danielle Robinson
Most questionable decision: Not matching Phoenix’s offer for Diggins-Smith
The asking price for Diggins-Smith (three first-round picks) was reportedly too much for Minnesota, and the franchise may be a long-term winner for holding onto its assets and cap room. As teams keep filling their roster with bloated contracts for next season and beyond, the Lynx may be able to snatch stars whose teams are unable to pay them for a cheap price.
Still, Lynx fans should be a bit disappointed they couldn’t lure Diggins-Smith, especially with Sylvia Fowles at the back end of her career. At least they’ll have Rookie of the Year Napheesa Collier to watch grow.
Grade: B-
New York Liberty
Additions: Layshia Clarendon
Departures: Bria Hartley
Most questionable decision: Signing Clarendon to a two-year deal
The Liberty’s big addition is going to come in April, when they draft Sabrina Ionescu. For now, they’ve been relatively quiet save for signing Clarendon, the Sun’s point guard who missed the playoff due to ankle surgery.
Signing the former all-star to a one-year deal to mentor Ionescu would’ve made sense, but she’s owed $240,000 over two years to stay in New York. Will the 28-year-old who averaged seven points and three assists for her career be worth that deal?
Grade: B
(This grade may change in the future. We’re still waiting to see if the Liberty trade Tina Charles, who they used their core player designation to retain.)
Photo by Barry Gossage/NBAE via Getty Images
Phoenix Mercury
Additions: Bria Hartley, Skylar Diggins-Smith
Re-signings: Britney Griner, Yvonne Turner
Departures: DeWanna Bonner, Essence Carson is still a free agent, Leilani Mitchell, Camille Little (retired), Sancho Lyttle (retired)
Most questionable decision: Signing Hartley to a max deal
The Mercury signed arguably the biggest free agent of them all in Diggins-Smith. That’s a huge recovery from losing Bonner who wanted out as a free agent, and none of it would’ve happened without brilliant general manager work. Phoenix was able to sign-and-trade Bonner to Connecticut for three first-round picks. Those picks were then used to land Diggins-Smith.
Then, inexplicably, the Mercury signed Hartley, a backup guard who scored 10 points per game on 36 percent shooting, to a max deal. Phoenix cap-locked itself from landing other free agents in the short term, and gambled with its future cap space. This signing made little sense.
Grade: B
Seattle Storm
Additions: Morgan Tuck
Re-signings: Breanna Stewart
Departures: Courtney Paris and Shevante Zellous are free agents
Most questionable decision: None
The Storm are about to get Sue Bird and Breanna Stewart back after both missed last season due to injury. Those might be the most consequential offseason additions of the winter. With those two back, as well as Jewell Loyd and Natasha Howard, who was an MVP candidate in their absence, the Storm are a favorite to win the 2020 championship. Moving a pick for Tuck was a nice depth move, too. Seattle didn’t need to do anything else.
Grade: B
Washington Mystics
Additions: Leilani Mitchell
Re-signings: Elena Delle Donne, Emma Meesseman
Departures: Kristi Toliver
Most questionable decision: Letting Toliver walk
The Mystics are the league’s reigning champions, and they are bringing the whole gang back together minus Toliver. Washington had a tough decision: keep Toliver at a full three-year max, pray for her health and risk not being able to keep a coveted young player due to cap space in the future, or move on.
They chose to move on after seeing the team win 12 out of 14 games without her in the regular season last year. That move became all the more validated when the team signed Most Improved Player of the Year Leilani Mitchell. Mitchell is coming off the best season of her career, averaging 13 points on 43 percent three-point shooting. The 34-year-old vet should fit seamlessly into D.C.’s pace-and-space system.
Losing Toliver will still sting, though.
Grade: A-

Murrell v. Educational Education Management Corp.: An Ohio Bankruptcy Court Misinterprets "Undue Hardship"
Calvin Murrell was thrown out of work in 2000 due to knee and back injuries. Murrell then attended Stautzenberger College, a private, for-profit community college with a total enrollment of around 300 students. He obtained a degree in web tech at Stautzenberger and then attended Spring Arbor College and Owens Community College, but he failed to complete programs at these schools. Murrell took out almost $73,000 in student loans to finance his college studies, and in 2018, he tried to discharge this debt in bankruptcy. He maintained that being forced to repay this debt would create an "undue hardship." Judge John Gustafson, an Ohio bankruptcy judge, applied the three-part Brunner test to determine whether it would impose an undue hardship on Murrell if he were forced to repay his loans. "Under the Brunner test," Judge Gustafson instructed, "the debtor must prove each of the following three elements: (1) that the debtor cannot maintain, based on current income and expenses, a 'minimal' standard of living for [himself] and [his] dependents if forced to repay the loans; (2) that additional circumstances exist indicating that this state of affairs is likely to persist for a significant portion of the repayment period of the student loans; and (3) that the debtor has made good faith efforts to repay the loans." To obtain a discharge of his student loans, Murrell was required to prove all three elements of the Brunner test. Educational Credit Management Corporation opposed the discharge, arguing that Murrell failed to pass any of the Brunner test's three elements. ECMC produced a witness who testified that Murrell was eligible to participate in an income-based repayment plan (IBRP) that would require him to pay between $63 and $94 a month. Judge Gustafson observed that Murrell's family income was about $44,000, consisting of $32,893 earned by Murrell's wife and $13,068 in Murrell's Social Security Disability payments. Judge Gustafson concluded that with a little belt-tightening, Murrell and his wife could make monthly student-loan payments of $63 to $94 a month and still maintain a minimal standard of living. Therefore the judge refused to discharge Murrell's student loans in bankruptcy. In my view, Judge Gustafson misapplied the Brunner test when he ruled that Murrell's student loans were nondischargeable. The Brunner test does not ask whether a debtor can maintain a minimal standard of living if required to make token loan payments under an income-based repayment plan. Rather it asks whether the debtor can pay off the student loans and maintain a minimal standard of living. If Murrell signs up for an IBRP that requires him to pay $63 per month for 25 years, he will never pay off his student loans. Quite the contrary; his student-loan debt will grow larger with each passing month. Let us assume Murrell makes monthly payments of $63 under an IBRP. And let us further assume that his student-loan debt accrues interest at 5 percent. Interest at that rate on $73,000 amounts to $304 a month--almost five times the amount of his monthly payments. Under an IBRP, Murrell's debt will negatively amortize as unpaid interest accumulates and becomes capitalized. Thus, the $73,000 dollars Murrell owes in 2019 will grow to a much larger number by the time 25years have passed. The essence of Judge Gustafson's ruling is that no one is eligible to discharge student loans in bankruptcy because it is always possible to make token monthly payments under an IBRP. Indeed, debtors in IBRPs who are unemployed and have no income are not required to make any payments on their loans. Currently, there are 8 million student-loan debtors enrolled in IBRPs. Virtually none of these people are paying down the principal on their loans. When their repayment obligations come to an end,--after 20 or 25 years--they will owe considerably more than they borrowed. This amassed debt will be forgiven, but the amount of the forgiven loans will be taxable to them as income. This is insane, and the only purpose of these income-based repayment plans is to hide the amount of student-loan debt that is not being paid off--probably at least a half-trillion dollars.

Dezeen's top 10 skyscrapers of 2017
Architecture editor Jessica Mairs continues our review of 2017 with 10 skyscrapers that made their mark this year, from the unapologetically tall to the peculiarly shaped.
Chaoyang Park Plaza, China, by MAD
Completing just in time for the end of the year, MAD only revealed final photographs of its Chaoyang Park Plaza yesterday – but the mound-shaped towers has been attracting photographers for several months.
Rising in parts to 120 metres, the complex of 10 buildings is set on the southern edge of one of Beijing's largest parks. It is based on Chinese ink paintings of mountain ranges and rock formations.

Marina One, Singapore, by Ingenhoven Architects, A61 and Gustafson Porter + Bowman
Wooden walkways are arranged in sinuous layers around the atrium of this skyscraper, echoing the formation of terraced paddy fields.
Abundant planting spills from the edges of the walkways, forming an oasis at the centre of the 223-metre development, which joins Moshe Safdie's icon Marina Bay Sands towers and a topical park called Gardens by the Bay on the edge of Sinagpore's Marina Bay.

Poly International Plaza, China, by Skidmore Owings & Merrill
The latticed exoskeleton of the 161-metre Poly International Plaza tower is based on the folds used to create paper lanterns.
Faceted glazing is set into the gaps in the framework, which can be admired through a 90-metre atrium at the heart of the office building in Beijing.

Lotte World Tower, South Korea, by Kohn Pederson Fox
The 555-metre Lotte World Tower in Seoul is the loftiest on this year's list. The skyscraper tapers towards its summit, where a glass-bottomed observation deck provides an unrivalled view of the city for those with a strong constitution.
The building – well within the supertall category reserved for skyscrapers above 300 metres– is currently the fifth tallest in the world.

American Copper Buildings, US, by SHoP Architects
The crooked silhouettes of these two residential skyscrapers by SHoP Architects are linked by a 91-metre-high skybridge containing luxury leisure facilities.
Copper-cladding covers two faces of each of the towers, while stripes of glazing down their sides frame views out across Manhattan's East River from heights of up to 164 metres.

Rothschild Tower, Israel, by Richard Meier
White louvres cover the facades of the 154-metre-high Rothschild Tower, giving it a typical Meier – and Tel Aviv – colouring.
Its location in Israel's White City affords residents views of some of the 4,000 Bauhaus-style buildings that surround it, and beyond to the Mediterranean Sea.

150 North Riverside, US, by Goettsch Partners
This rectilinear block by Goettsch Partners meets the ground in a dramatic taper, wedging itself between a railway line to the west and the Chicago River to the east.
At 220 metres, 150 North Riverside is by no means the tallest building in Chicago, but its 20:1 height-to-base ratio garnered plenty of attention from readers.

Beirut Terraces, Lebanon, by Herzog & de Meuron
Staggered floor plates provide shaded terraces at each level of Herzog & de Meuron's 119-metre-tall Beirut Terraces building.
Pot plants positioned sporadically around the edges of the balconies provide splashes of colour to its otherwise white slabs, which sandwich layers of glazing that give residents panoramic views over Beirut.

Bund Finance Centre, China, Foster + Partners and Heatherwick Studio
This pair of 180-metre towers completing in October form the final piece to the Bund Finance Centre, a mixed-use development in Shanghai by Foster + Partners and Heatherwick Studio.
Strips of textured granite used to frame the glazed blocks provide a visual link with the surrounding lower rise development, which features an ornate arts centre veiled in a kinetic curtain of bronze tubes.

Tribunal de Paris, France, by Renzo Piano Building Workshop Last month, Renzo Piano's firm completed Europe's largest law courts, in Paris. At 160 metres tall, it is also one of city's tallest buildings to complete since a recently lifted skyscraper ban.
But the scale of stacked-block formation, which forms large planted terraces, reawakened old yearnings for a return to the city's skyscraper height restrictions.

#VeryEmbarassing #brainstealer Gustafson, three blocks that way Arlington Tower 1028 Consider it done. But you will owe me so goddamned big...you're lucky I'm not asking for your first born. What are you talking about?....what do you have in mind, kidnapping?...We can't touch him...everyone in that building is under the heaviest security they can barely shit without someone watching them. What the FRIG is that? Latest in corporate espionage 'brain stealer'....Hackers can be expensive, sloppy...traced...hunted down, with you paraded infront of the media. Very embarassing. These little beauties ..untouchable as they are discreet. Supply it with a target...it secreets 9 different types of anesthetic and neuro relaxers and voila..his entire memory perfectly copied. Mr. Gustafson won't know what the hell happened other than a wonderful night's sleep with the woman of his dreams. He'll probably even have a little accident too.... Don't you think someone will notice this thing has bored into his brain?! You are a simple bastard aren't you?.. It first puffs a numbing agent up his nose to deaden the hairs...then crawls up the nasal cavity...into the sinus...and only has to puncture through a thin wall of bone and tissue...no fuss no muss...in/out...and in less than two hours...data beyond your wildest dreams. Everything he has ever thought...from when he was a friggin baby on his momma's boob. All stored right there..in those sacks back there... Collect the data...this thing dies... No one the wiser...and you very much the richer.
