I can’t believe I can’t find my baseball cap. Like what did I do with it??? Sure I haven’t been out a lot on sunny days because of the weather but that’s like one of my staple accessories. It, along with my umbrella have been connected to my purse for years. I got a new purse but there’s no way I would’ve thrown out that cap. I’ve had it for...5+ years. Ah! I know where the cap is I got my dad. I guess Okinawa baseball cap it is. Swapping an astronaut out for a shiisa dog.
#mumblings#I've spent like two weeks slowly digging through all my stuff trying to find my astronaut cap#resigning myself to having to buy a new one#and just remembered that amongst all the stuff my step mom gave me when she was getting rid of dad's stuff was the cap I got him in Okinawa#I think I even remember where it is too#thank goodness because otherwise my scalp will burn if not this weekend then next weekend while cheering for the race#please say it's still in the tub with all the wall masks#aha I found it! I didn't realize she gave me two of dad's caps the other is like from my first year overseas when i sent him one for the#'independent country' island that was in my provence#he loved that one because it confused the heck out of people because they hadn't heard of it#it's a tourist location island that no one lives on but you have to go through a mock version of immigration to get to#it's mostly just a nice nature area#with a cool library and some birds

ok do i understand why a lot of toddler and kid shows give characters parents and family in the military/police; "real kids in real life are in military/police families so we're just trying to be realistic", whatever
but said show runners never seem to think about the implications beyond that, or think about how kids outside of those contexts, who don't have those warm fuzzy (or even neutral) feelings, would see it
#like my niece was a toddler when disney first got their hands on bluey so ive seen a lot of the show#and every so often its mentioned that bluey's maternal granddad was in the australian army. likely in the 1970s & 80s#idr if its every specified how long he was in the army for or where he was; just that it was “in the jungle”#it could've been thailand vietnam western new guinea kashmir or where ever. and they just drop it like a casual funny thing like!#'haha granddad you're so fun show us how to camouflage ourselves with mud like when you had to hide in the jungle :)'#like. i get *why* the showrunners did stuff like this: they grew up where that sort of thing was normal* and just want to portray 'reality'#*meaning they had older family members who were in the military and were stationed overseas#however. they've never honestly *thought* about the context and reasons said family were sent overseas#and that it was terrible they were over there for reaspns beyond that they couldn't see their father in oerson for awhile#or like how steven universe (shut up) had that episode where we meet steven's racist uncle#and the showrunners were like 'its for (white) kids to relate to because we all have a relative who hates illegal immigrants'#without even taking into consideration (or just not caring) that kids of color and immigrant children would see that#im rambling but yknow what i mean?#mickey.txt

The Frenchman wore an ugly button up shirt with a cheeseburger pattern battering every inch of fabric. "The cheeseburger is the food of Americans", he explained, "and Americans are vain." The associations between Americans and vanity and Americans and cheeseburgers were so strong he could not help but circuitously assume cheeseburgers were also some product of extravagant New World psychological masturbation, rather than a meal of somewhat pitiful necessity, or worse, a product as European in origins as he was, and even here he could not escape the disinterested rabble of the burgs and becs at home. Here the Frenchman was a strange, grumbling, conceited man rummaging through a cold pile of hash browns in a rickety diner in a forgotten plain of middle America, once again among the poor and old and settled. Meanwhile the burger had spread from far more innovative immigrants than he to all corners of the lands through its satisfaction of need and easy digestion. It was pitiful that such a soul, in trying to keep inflated that buoyant pride which gave him life in this sea of corn and depression, unable to avoid his failure in the arts overseas, felt the need to invent and then attack strange symbols and ideologies through highly unusual means, such as ironically wearing a cheeseburger shirt. In a way, he had brought a sort of avant-garde to the old town, just as misunderstood here as it would've been anywhere else, for not only was it baseless and stupid, but seemingly mad. He would pretend to be obsessed with burgers--in a way he was--in order to more fully accentuate his hatred for them.

Expat Life
Photo by Kranich17 I decided to write this article on Expat Life because it has and still is a crucial part of my life. Although I cannot even determine a time when I got the bug and desire to have such a lifestyle. I was born outside of the UK as my father was in the British Army. We moved back to the UK when I was 11, and at 17, my parents dropped me off at Edinburgh train station and off I…

Don Moynihan at Can We Still Govern?
An exhausted Bradley Boone, the assistant Fire Chief at Pensacola, took to Facebook on Saturday. As his community was recovering from Hurricane Helene he asked viewers for help. Not with aid or supplies. They had plenty of that for now. But to dispel the rumors that were making it harder for him to do his job. These rumors include that 150 people were missing, that the community was overrun with violence, that there were not sufficient food and water, that roads which were in reality in need of repair were being shut to limit the flow of help, and that FEMA was unwelcome. He said he had spent a large chunk of his day talking to citizens face-to-face to dispel the rumors. Boone is an example of how emergency responders have become one more category of public service worker who have discovered that they now have a second job they did not sign up for. Alongside librarians, teachers, public health officials, election officials, and law enforcement, emergency responders must now also be misinformation experts. They have to spend their days separating facts from reality for constituents who are being lied to via right-wing conspiracy theorists. FEMA set up a website to battle misinformation. Some of it comes from the usual suspects, like foreign adversaries such as Russia, seeking to sow mistrust, or professional conspiracy theorists like Alex Jones. But many of the lies (that FEMA is only offering $750 to disaster victims, running out of money, that FEMA money has gone overseas) comes directly from the people who could be in charge of the national disaster response next year.
JD Vance, Trump, and Fox News are key conveyers of the $750 lie. ($750 is intended to cover up-front costs, but citizens can apply for tens of thousands of dollars more in relief for property damage).
Trump said that Biden refused to talk to the Governor of Georgia, part of a pattern of discriminating against red states. But earlier in the day, Governor Kemp described the conversation he had with Biden the day before, and praised Biden’s support: “He offered that if there’s other things we need, just to call him directly, which — I appreciate that. But we’ve had FEMA embedded with us since a day or two before the storm hit in our state operations center in Atlanta; we’ve got a great relationship with them.” Other Republican leaders have issued similar praise of the responsiveness of the administration.
Trump: “They stole the FEMA money, just like they stole it from a bank, so they could give it to their illegal immigrants that they want to have vote for them this season.” Yeah, this is also untrue. But fun fact: Trump raided the FEMA budget to redirect money towards his immigration policies, including building a wall.
The misinformation, and much worse, is coursing through social media because much of social media has given up on policing lies, and some social media (e.g., Truth Social, Elon Musk’s X) see a strategic advantage in lying about the disaster. This false post from Elon Musk was viewed 28 million times. No community notes.
[...] We could be angry here about the hypocrisy. Trump says Biden does not want to deliver disaster aid to Republicans. Biden not wanting to visibly help swing states like Georgia and North Carolina, right before an election, doesn’t make much sense. But it fits with Trump’s own attitudes about disaster response. Multiple Trump aides say he was reluctant to allow FEMA support go to blue states. “One of his first questions would be: Are they my people?” according to a former aide, Stephanie Grisham.
But setting aside the hypocrisy, we should care because conspiracy theories affect the competence and quality of service delivery. I used to do research on disaster response. One thing that was clear is how important it is to have a functional national crisis response agency, and how dependent the response is on human factors. FEMA itself is not a large organization: it organizes and relies on a broader network of responders, and on the trust of the public. Take that trust away, and their ability to help people collapses. Competence really matters for disaster response like few other government functions. You can't bluff your way through it. You can’t learn the job as you go along. Mistakes are costly. Musk’s Cybertruck is on its fifth recall in the space of a year, while the boss spends his day on social media. His status as a natural disaster schmuck emerged when he promised to rescue a group of kids in Thailand stranded in a cave with a tiny submarine. When a cave diver who advised the successful rescue mocked the impracticality of Musk’s plan, Musk labeled him a pedophile, and hired a private investigator to dig up dirt on him.
[...] There is a basic asymmetry here. Democrats would certainly attack missteps by a GOP President failing in disaster response. The failure of Hurricane Katrina marked a key point in the decline of President Bush’s popularity. Trump was criticized for his sluggish response to Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico, and for pushing his appointees to violate scientific and ethical guidelines when releasing public information about the path of hurricanes to align with his Sharpie additions to a map. But that criticism was grounded in reality. Instead, the GOP simply turns to conspiracy theories rather than engaging in troublesome facts. More climate-driven disasters are coming. This is the future. Trump won’t acknowledge or prepare for this reality. Indeed, Project 2025 has proposed that the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration should be “broken up and downsized” because it is “one of the main drivers of the climate change alarm industry.”
Another top notch post from Don Moynihan, this time addressing the hydra of lies and conspiracy theories about FEMA and the response to Hurricane Helene (and Milton).

Employers desire foreign workers who are accustomed to the hazardous work sites of industrial construction; in particular, they specifically solicit migrants who do not have a history of labor organizing within SWANA. In response, labor brokerage firms brand themselves as offering migrant workers who are deferential. Often, labor brokers conflate the category of South Asian with docility; [...] as inherently passive, disciplined, and, most important, unfettered by volatile working conditions. "We say quality, they [U.S. employers] say seasoned. We both know what it means. Workers who are not going to quit, not going to run away in the foreign country and do as they are told.” [...]
For migrants, the U.S. oil industry presents a rare chance to apply their existing skill set in a country with options for permanent residency and sponsorship of family members. Migrants wish to find an end to their temporary worker status; they imagine the United States as a liberal economy in which labor standards are enforced and there are opportunities for citizenship and building a life for their family. [...] What brokers fail to explain is that South Asian migrants are being recruited as guest workers. Migrants will not have access to U.S. citizenship or visas for family members; in fact, their employment status will be quite similar to their SWANA migration.
While nations such as the Philippines have both state-mandated and independent migrant rights agencies, the Indian government has minimal avenues for worker protection. These are limited to hotlines for reporting abusive foreign employers and Indian consulates located in a few select countries of the SWANA region. [... Brokers] emphasize the docility of Indian migrants in comparison to the disruptive tendencies of other Asian migrant workers. [...] “Some of these Filipino men you see make a lot of trouble in the Arab countries. Even their women, who work as maids and such, lash out. The employer says one wrong thing and the workers get the whole country [the Philippines] on the street. [...] But you don’t see our people creating a tamasha [spectacle] overseas.” [...] Just as Filipinx migrants are racialized to be undisciplined labor, Indian brokers construct divisions within the South Asian workforce to promote the primacy of their own firms. In particular, Pakistani workers are racialized as an abrasive population.
[...] While the public image of the South Asian American community remains as model minorities, presumed to be primarily upwardly mobile professionals, the global reality of the population is quite to the contrary. [...] From the historic colonial routes initiated by British occupation of South Asia to the emergence of energy markets within the countries of SWANA, migrants have been recruited to build industries by contributing their labor to construction projects. Within the last decade, these South Asian migrants, with experience in the SWANA oil industry, have been actively solicited as guest workers into the energy sector of the United States. The growth of hydraulic fracturing has opened new territory for oil extraction; capitalizing on the potential market are numerous stakeholders who have invested in industrial construction projects across the southwestern United States. The solicitation of South Asian construction workers is not coincidental. [...] Kartik, a globally competitive firm’s broker, explains the connection of Indian labor to practices of the past. “You know we come from a long history of working in foreign lands. Even the British used to send us to Africa and the Arab regions to work in the mines and oil fields. It’s part of our history.”
Seasoning Labor: Contemporary South Asian Migrations and the Racialization of Immigrant Workers, Saunjuhi Verma in the Journal of Asian American Studies
