Thangalaan Movie Review: The film works because of its concept and Pa Ranjith's execution.

 Thangalaan Movie Review Synopsis: THANGALAAN follows the narrative of a brave guy. The year is 1850. Thangalaan (Chiyaan Vikram) is the Veppur village leader, who lives with his wife Gangamma (Parvathy Thiruvothu) and their four children. Despite his position as chief, he is forced to labor as a bonded labourer. The zamindar's (Vettai Muthukumar) soldiers set fire to his farm, destroying his produce. He is unable to pay taxes and is compelled to relinquish his land. This is when Lord Clement (Daniel Caltagirone), a British officer, comes in Veppur. He is looking for gold in a nearby region and asks the Veppur people for assistance because he is aware of their ancestral ability in locating it. Everyone initially refuses, claiming that the gold mine area is filled with ghosts. Thangalaan's great-grandfather, Kaadaiyan (Chiyaan Vikram), was also an expert. Thangalaan agrees, and a few villagers accompany him in the gold-finding mission. Thangalaan, on the other hand, suffers from hallucinations of Aarathi (Malavika Mohanan), a sorceress and defender of the gold field. What occurs next determines the rest of the film.

Thangalaan Movie plot Review:

Pa Ranjith and Tamil Praba's plot is creative and unique. Pa Ranjith and Tamil Praba's screenplay has flaws, but it is thorough, engaging, and addresses some significant subjects. Azhagiya Periyavan's dialogue is crisp. However, the Hindi-dubbed dialogues fall short of expectations.

Pa Ranjith's direction is exceptional. There is no doubt that he is technically proficient. He has previously employed sound, mood, camerawork, and other techniques to create a distinct cinematic experience, and THANGALAAN is no exception. The moment in the pre-climax that transitions from night to day and back again demonstrates his creative ability. He also offers the film a commercial approach while avoiding the common cliches seen in mass entertainment. He does everything his own way. While doing so, he discusses caste atrocities and avarice, which contributes significantly to the picture.

On the other hand, in numerous instances, the film becomes overly weighty and even untidy. There is a lot going on, and the audience may become overwhelmed as they assimilate everything. The film is also quite abstract, and despite commercial components, it is not your standard mass-appeal film. These two reasons would limit the attractiveness.

Thangalaan Movie Review Performances:

Chiyaan Vikram becomes unrecognizable. His change is incredible, and his performance is nothing short of spectacular. He has delivered some outstanding performances, and this is undoubtedly one of his greatest. Parvathy Thiruvothu gets into character and appears to be a poor peasant. She also has a significant role and performs admirably. Malavika Mohanan has a minimal screen time but steals the show. She is an excellent fit for the role. Daniel Caltagirone is amazing. Vettai Muthukumar is barely present. Hari Krishnan (Varada), Preeti Karan (Arasani), Arjun Anbudan (Asoka), and others provide valuable support.

Thangalaan music and technical aspects:

G V Prakash Kumar's music is not chartbuster and may not appeal to the Hindi audience. The film's tracks, including 'Murga Murgi', 'Katai Ghana', 'Koi To Aae Raah Dikhae', and the title song, fail to attract. G V Prakash Kumar's background score is significantly better.

Kishor Kumar's cinematography is stunning. The action in Stunner Sam is a little gory, but it works well for this type of picture. The outfits worn by Aegan Ekambaram and Anitha Sundaresan are not glamorous, but rather realistic and rustic. S S Murthi's art direction is thoroughly researched. Hybrid 360's visual effects are exceptional. Selva R K's editing could have been smoother and faster-paced.

Thangalaan Movie Review Conclusion:

The film's concept, execution by Pa Ranjith, and award-winning performance by Chiyaan Vikram contribute to its overall success. However, this is not your usual mainstream entertainer. As a result, its Hindi adaptation will require strong word-of-mouth from its target population to be successful at the box office.

You know, while I am excited about Star Trek: Prodigy coming to Netflix on December 25th, I have decided we will take a Break Discussing about ST: Prodigy for a while and let's talk about some new other topic.

Or else, People will think, this blog is more focused about Star Trek: Prodigy!!

So let's talk about an animated series which, some of you don't know, this even exists!! Because, you haven't heard of this series yet or unknown about!!

Look, I am from India, the mostly populated country and developing country in the whole world!! And when we talk about Animation in India, there might be a chance, you won't know anything about Indian Animation. Because, for years, India's Entertainment Industry, didn't even rely upon Animation. Especially, Bollywood Industry. Because, Bollywood Industry haven't been relying upon Animation, a Vast Medium of all things Live-Action Counterpart cannot achieve. Granted, there are VFX existed on Live-Action things, but not Animation!! Because, People are Unaware of that "Animation is not for Kids Only, it's for Everyone."

As an Animation Fan, you know, discovering new things is a habit.

I always think, when will India create their own Super-Creative Animated Series?? If Australia can create Bluey, then why not India??

But then, something happened in Early 2021, that is Unbelievable!!

Before I touched upon ST: Prodigy, in 2021, there was an Indian Animated Series, which I think, it could be the next big thing for Animation!! And it has the Potential to be India's "Avatar: The Last Airbender"!!

Yup, I am talking about "The Legend of Hanuman"!! It's an Original series from the Indian Version of Disney+, called as Disney+ Hotstar, labeling as Hotstar Specials!!

No, it's not from Disney or Pixar or Marvel, in fact, it has nothing to do with Disney, whatsoever, except from giving a boost to this series' massive popularity in India!! It is made by Indian Animation and Comics creation Studio, Graphic India!!

It is based upon and Centred around Lord Hanuman, the important character from Saint Valmiki's Ramayana, which is an Indian Hindu Mythological Epic.

For those, who don't know about Ramayana, Google Search about and Research Ramayana!! You will get the Idea!!

This series is about Hanuman's Journey from being an ordinary Vanara (Humanoid Monkey) to becoming a Legend.

This series has the same plot as Ramayana, but centring around Hanuman, he is the Main Character for the show only.

Yeah, yeah, I know, there are many series and Movies made upon Lord Hanuman and Lord Ram!! But for me, after Ramayana: the Legend Of Prince Ram by Indian Animation veteran Ram Mohan and Japanese Animator Yugo Sako released in 1992, this series has etched a special Place in my Heart and Mind, to be honest with you!!

First of all, the elements in Animation, it's not like movie quality like Star Trek: Prodigy, as it's aspect ratio is 16:9 HDTV Format, but the quality is still up to the mark, especially when you rewatch this series entirely or freshly watch it. You will get some good quality Animation in it.

And the Visuals and VFX, all are outstanding!! Every aspect you see is detailed!!

Second, is the Audio mixing, Voice Dubbing and Music. Most of the People voice casting in this series in The Original Hindi Version are the people who excelled in Hindi Dub, for example Sanket Mhatre as Lord Ram, Damandeep Singh Baggan or Da Man as Lord Hanuman etc.

Third, the Direction. Sharad Devarajan, Navin John and Jeevan J. Kang, are just delivering best directing in one of the Animated Series based upon Hindu Mythology Epic. Even Sharad Devarajan said, that he was inspired from Japanese Animator Hayao Miyazaki's "Princess Mononoke" to make this series.

And finally, this series has so much story to tell about Lord Hanuman and his journey from being an ordinary Vanara to Serving Lord Ram and his brother Lakshman to save Lord Ram's Wife, Princess Sita to becoming an Icon for everyone, a legend.

It has Two seasons both released in 2021 with 13 episodes each and The Third season is in production and releasing on January 2024.

As I said, before it is available on Disney+ Hotstar in India, and for the US Viewers, they can watch it on Hulu (Merging with Disney+ later in 2024) in the Hotstar Hub. This series has been dubbed in 7 different Languages like Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Bengali, Malayalam, and Marathi and Subtitled in English.

And talking about 9.2/10 on IMDb, it's the first Indian Animated series to cross 9/10 Rating on IMDb!! For other than India, Only I know as of yet, A:TLA and Bluey got this rating above 9 out of 10

It has a record 9.2/10 Rating on IMDb and in fact, in 2021, according to Ormax Media, it has become the first Indian Animated Series to cross 8.5 million Viewers in the first 10 days after Season 2 of it was premiered!! A Whopping 8.5 million viewers!! No animated series in a paid streaming service in India has done it before, and proof that Indians are very optimistic about "The Legend Of Hanuman" and praising the Animation and the Creative Lore of it!!

If you have time, please watch "The Legend of Hanuman" on Disney+ Hotstar in India and Hulu in the US, it is the series you really need to watch out for and worth the Time and Money!!

FILM AWARDS SEASON CHECK-IN Part Deux - No Spoilers

THE GOOD GLASS ONION: A KNIVES OUT MYSTERY- People can like - or not like - what they want. I can only control what I like. But when I read about people who didn't like GLASS ONION I just think, "Do you just not like fun?" This is a fun film. It's hilarious. I think it improves greatly on KNIVES OUT, which I felt was overpraised. It loosens up Daniel Craig's Benoît Blanc giving him a personality instead of letting his accent do all the work. I found it very clever and entertaining and if Rian Johnson can continue to improve on these films, I would love to see more outings with the character.

THE MENU: Another fun film. Dark comedy directed by Mark Mylod (SUCCESSION) and written by late night comedy writers Seth Reiss and Will Tracy ( which is remarkable because there is nothing less funny than light night comedy). Centered around a group of strangers who congregate for a night of high dining under Chef Slowik (Ralph Fiennes who can always be trusted to bring dry wit to the table). While I love Anya Taylor-Joy, I think too many of her characters - or rather, how she plays them - are too one-note; too cool and even-keel. Ralph Fiennes continues to be a delightful actor. BABYLON: A stunner. Maybe it's because I love Old Hollywood and loved all the touches and references to that era (Margot Robbie's character is a nod to Clara Bow, even using a quote attributed to Bow as one of her lines. Brad Pitt is drawn after John Gilbert; Jean Smart a Louella Parsons type).

The trailers can't do all 3 hours and 9 minutes of the film justice, but I think it encapsulates the journey the film takes.

People are already dismissing it as a fawning love story to Hollywood and they're not wrong, but it is a film that doesn't litigate the past. It shows all the seediness within Old Hollywood. The heartbreaking desperation of those who dreamt of being stars. It's an unconditional love of accepting an era warts and all. Margot Robbie gives it 1000% percent. Paramount is running Robbie as Lead and while there are some tremendous female lead performances this season -Olivia Colman in EMPIRE OF LIGHT, Danielle Deadwyler in TILL, Cate Blanchett in TÁR and Michelle Williams in THE FABLEMANS. While I want Danielle Deadwyler to win, I would be so happy if Robbie did. I can't imagine Emma Stone had this role before her. As great as Stone is I don't see that character as richly drawn if it had been another actress doing it.

More films. NO SPOILERS.

RRR: This film is what people meant by crowd-pleaser. My audience was so hyped during this film. Spontaneous clapping and cheers all throughout the film. We were all joined in our love for the over-the-top action, the comedy and the smiting of British soldiers. Like BABYLON, it's a bit over 3 hours but doesn't feel like it. The leads, the story, the action is outstanding. CGI? A bit dodgy, but it's so deliriously fun.

It is on Netflix but as their US distributor stated at the screening Netflix has dubbed it into Hindi instead of using the original Telugu, so if you want the real deal it is in theaters.

WHITE NOISE: I like films that takes big swings and this and BARDO: FALSE CHRONICLES AND A HANDFUL OF TRUTHS certainly do that and for that alone it makes me love a film. Noah Baumbach's adaptation of Don DeLillo's novel. It was once consider not filmable but Baumbach assembled a great cast to give it the old college try.

The cast makes it work. Much like Cate Blanchett in TÁR who masterfully delivers dialogue that could easily be sedam Driver is able to make it entertaining. Same with Gerwig, Don Cheadle...essentially the entire cast (which includes Andre "3000" Benjamin and Jodi Turner-Smith in small roles, and younger actors Raffey Cassidy and Sam and May Nivola (children of Emily Mortimer and Alessandro Nivola).

ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT: Searing look at the brutality of a war and the folly of men who sacrifice people lives just for their own glory and gain. This is the first film role for Felix Kammerer who got it straight out of theatre school. He is devastating as a teen solider who realizes too late that he and his friends have been sold a bill a goods about the nature of war. Director Edward Berger (with Felix Kammerer and Daniel Bruhl who executive produced the film and has a role in it)

It's brutal but that's what I loved about it. War should not be glossed over and glamorized. THE PALE BLUE EYE: I am putting this in the GOOD pile even though it probably belongs in the MEH pile because I have never been disappointed in a Christian Bale/Scott Cooper collaboration. This could have been better as it drags in the middle, but it is a promising film and Bale is never not good.

Vanessa Kirby is also impressive. However, for me it felt like the cast was trying to wring some emotionality from this dry, mediocre script and for that they should be applauded. On the merits of the story itself, I think PSAs have more heart. THE FABLEMANS - There's been some comparisons of Steven Spielberg's THE FABLEMANS to Alejandro González Iñárritu's BARDO: FALSE CHRONICLES AND A HANDFUL OF TRUTHS because both films are film à clefs, both films are viewed as indulgent (THE FABLEMANS at a 2 1/2 hours; BARDO 2 hours and 54 minutes (apparently there is a cut that has 20 minutes shaved off, but I saw the longer one).

But if I had to choose one over the other I would go with BARDO. Yes, it is so abstract at times, so surreal and yes, indulgent, but it's not safe. THE FABLEMANS is safe. It's covered in bubble wrapped and handled with gloves. It's behind protective glass it's so safe. For a movie about his love of film and family, Spielberg and co-writer Tony Kushner seems to keep the passion at arms length. But there were high points. Michelle Williams is terrific and the storyline about the parents is much more interesting than anything about young Steven...I mean, Sammy's, life. SHE SAID: This could have been and, perhaps, should have been a TV movie. My issue with the film isn't really the film itself. The acting is fine but staid (with the exception of Samantha Morton who only is in one scene and blows everyone else out the water), the story functional, not unlike reading an article. But it was hard to view the film on its merits when the absurdity of a film saluting the women who exposed Harvey Weinstein, yet it is coming from an industry that shielded Weinstein and rewarded him all the while. Though Seeta’s depiction cannot be described as damning, the character is confrontational, condescending, and manipulative not only to men, but later to Anita in wanting to secure even a fraction of her deceased brother’s fortune for herself.

Adding to the film’s questionable writing is a scene where Anita meets Preetam’s sister-in-law (Kumkum) about ninety minutes into the film – this encounter will eventually convince Anita that traditional married life is honorable, worthwhile. The sister-in-law, residing in the countryside, extols the sources of happiness in her life: tending to the homestead, the time spent with her children, and the company of her husband. She also adds that being on the receiving end of her husband’s beatings is just an aspect of their time together, and that she does not mind at all. This line comes from almost nothing and will be received as outdated. I profess not to know about gendered norms in India during the 1950s, but even then, such dialogue should have provoked some ire from audiences. Anita has a change of heart, and becomes more open to loving Preetam. This character development arrives too rapidly, sending another conflicting message about gendered roles that could have been prevented. This is reckless writing.

Yet if one can forgive these storytelling indiscretions, the two central performances are outstanding. Beginning with Guru Dutt, he brings an intensity – not in regards to sexuality or loquaciousness, but to how he commits just enough emotion for each comical or dramatic scene he appears in – to his performance that makes it difficult to look away from. Always charming and combining a social cynicism with his character’s artistic passions, Dutt, like in Baaz, is a well-rounded, excellent romantic lead who can laugh at his own travails. He might not be the handsomest, the fittest, or the most confident-looking fellow who ever graced a Bollywood film, but his acting discipline renders all of that irrelevant. Murthy’s floating camerawork and use of chiaroscuro. A beautiful string line carries the flowing, ¾-time melody. It is a lovers’ waltz – in rhythm, if not in how the two lovers approach and move with the other.

With the music and the acting as convincing as Preetam’s sister-in-law’s talk with Anita, Mr. & Mrs. ‘55 is a pleasure to watch. But this praise comes with some reservation – that Guru Dutt and Abrar Alvi are not interested here in portraying genuine feminists or feminism. Their intentions in how the women are portrayed might be satirical, but this is never clear (perhaps that calls for a more conscious, respectful remake; I certainly think that satire and feminism can clash and coexist in a Bollywood movie). Nevertheless, Mr. & Mrs. ‘55 represents a triumph for most everyone involved (all of whom were to build off their work here and destined for greater films), offering ridiculously watchable entertainment.

‘Kapusong Pinoy Studio 7 Musikalye sa Brooklyn’ captivates East Coast Fil-Ams

Filipinos from all over the US trooped to the Kings’ Theatre last May 11 to witness a night of pure entertainment from some of GMA Network’s sought-after stars—Christian Bautista, Julie Anne San Jose, Rayver Cruz, Kyline Alcantara, Golden Cañedo, Betong Sumaya, and Alden Richards.

The highly-successful show, dubbed ‘Kapusong Pinoy Studio 7 Musikalye sa Brooklyn’, was filled with a variety of performances—from high-energy dance numbers, powerhouse vocal sets, duet performances, and heartfelt moments that kept the Kapuso abroad in high spirits.

As the concert attendees entered the venue, they were already greeted with Filipino festive music performed by the rondalla group of the Filipino Arts and Music Ensemble (FAME).

The show’s highlights were when the Kapuso stars took the opportunity to celebrate Mother’s Day by serenading three well known and respected Fil-Am Mothers, Cora Reyes, Menchu de Luna and Joyce Andes-Davis while giving out roses to the moms in the audience.  They also serenaded five Fil-Am community leaders who represented their outstanding organizations – Helen Kwong of CEBU, Inc., Theia delos Santos of Filipino Intercollegiate Networking Dialogue (FIND, Inc.), Eddie Manongsong of FALConn (Filipino Amateur League in Connecticut), Dulce Barangan of Ilocano American Association, Inc. (IAAI) and Fely Perez of Philippine Heritage Center.. In this special segment, the Kapuso female artists wore elegant, highly creative gowns designed by noted Fil-Am fashion designer, RC Caylan.

Sinulog, a ritual prayer-dance honoring Senyor Santo Nino or the Child Jesus performed by Tribu Cebuano was the opening act of the show, followed by a skit presentation of MUFACEA, a student group from Montclair State University and William Paterson University in New Jersey.  

The Studio 7 squad expressed their utmost gratitude for making their first international Musikalye show a huge success.

Christian, who exhibited why he is one of GMA’s most powerful singers with his stellar performances, feels grateful for the overwhelming support of the Kapuso abroad, “Thank you so much for spending time with us.”

“We’re very fortunate dahil nadala namin yung saya ng Studio 7 sa international stage. Hopefully, marami pang shows na dumating para mas marami pa kaming mapasayang Kapuso abroad,” Julie Anne said.

Rayver, on the other hand, shared his experience in his first international show as a Kapuso artist, “Ang saya ng samahan naming lahat. Masaya kami na nakapagbigay kami ng ligaya dito sa Brooklyn.”

Thankful for the opportunity to entertain the Filipinos in the US, Kyline shared, “Sobrang saya makasama ng mga Kapuso natin sa New York at hopefully, makasama ko ulit sila soon.”

“Kahit nasa ibang panig man kami ng mundo, hindi nawawala ang mainit na pagtanggap ng mga Pilipino,” said Golden who impressed the Fil-Am audience with her vocal prowess.
