The Da Nang Tourism introduction program took place on July 25, 2019 at St.Regis Hotel in Mumbai, India. The program was jointly organized by the Danang City Department of Tourism and Bangkok Airways with a plan to diversify international tourist markets approved by the city in the period of 2019-2020.
For the first time to promote in India, the Tourism Department has focused on connecting Indian market travel partners, especially in the financial capital of India -Mumbai to develop this market in the near future.
Attending the event were Mr. Tran Xuan Thuy, Consul General of Vietnam in Mumbai, India; Mr. Sudhir Patil, Founder of Veena World, one of the leading travelers in India and President of the Maharashtra Travel Association and members of the Association; approx. 72 guests who are Indian tour operators, wedding organizers and units specializing in MICE.
Sharing with guests at the program on stable development and the attraction of Vietnam tourism has attracted more than 15.5 million visitors in the past year, Mr. Tran Xuan Thuy especially emphasized the tourism potentials of Da nang, one of the most livable cities in Vietnam.
Indian travel representative to welcome the tourism business delegation from Da Nang, Mr. Sudhir Patil (Veena World) expressed his thanks to Da Nang and Mumbai’s market connection efforts as well as the expectation of good cooperation in the future between business partners.
Mr. Thanut Nachon Chanachon, Representative of Bangkok Airways in India, co-event organizer believed the positive changes of the Indian outbound market to Da Nang in the near future: “The destination of Da Nang is really a new and attractive name for Indian market. Many of our partners are committed to promoting this new market, so I think the effect of the event will be visible in the near future ”.
Mr. Varun Madaan, the founder of Vivaah Makers opened the wedding market in India for Da Nang after his survey visit in November 2018. Upon his support, Da Nang already sees confirmed Big Fat India Weddings in November 2019 and March 2020.
There exists a small concern about the lack of direct flights but the businesses still actively reach the Indian market and also appreciate the effectiveness of partner connections in the program.
In the program, one of the well known attractions in Da Nang, Sunworld got introduced to Indian customers. Ms. Phung Pham Thanh Thuy, Business Manager of Sunworld said: “The number of Indian tourists coming to Vietnam is very limited compared to the potential and the power that this market has. Tourism promotion in India is considered necessary to introduce Da Nang to travel partners and media to facilitate the construction of suitable tour packages. Travel units, transport companies, service providers such as hotels, entertainment.. need to join hands to build facilities to meet the needs of Indian guests ”.
Mr. Nguyen Son Thuy, Indochina Unique Tourists Director said: “India is a potential source of customers to supplement the structure of the“ pie ”market share in the context of China and South Korea markets are accounting for a high proportion in Danang. Da Nang has always pioneered in finding new markets and promoting itself in India once again affirms this role.”
According to Ms. Le Nguyen Bao Ly, Deputy General Director of Vietnam Travel Mart, the unit has been exploiting the Indian market for many years but still faces difficulties in high ticket prices because there is no direct flight, “Hopefully, the program will attract guest partners who are really interested in Da Nang destination and push the tour actively. Currently popular tours focus only on Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City in combination with Cambodia, Indian visitors to Da Nang are still in minority.
Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Anh, Director of Omega Tours (DMC) expects to exploit Indian visitors in these upcoming 3-6 months. However, he noted that this is still a challenging market.
The program was well planned and very well organized by Da Nang City Department of Tourism and Bangkok Airways. The organizers showed great interest to understand the demands of wedding planners and absorbed the requirements.

1.5 Billion Int. Tourist Arrivals in 2019; UNWTO Forecasts 4% Increase in 2020
The UNWTO has reported that in 2019 there were 1.5 billion international tourist arrivals globally, the tenth consecutive year of growth. The total equates to a 4% increase on 2018, which is also the forecast increase for this year. All regions saw a rise in international arrivals in 2019. However, uncertainty surrounding Brexit, the collapse of Thomas Cook, geopolitical and social tensions and the global economic slowdown all contributed to a slower growth in 2019, when compared to the exceptional rates of 2017 and 2018. This slowdown affected mainly advanced economies and particularly Europe and Asia and the Pacific.
Looking ahead, growth of 3% to 4% is predicted for 2020, an outlook reflected in the latest UNWTO Confidence Index which shows a cautious optimism: 47% of participants believe tourism will perform better and 43% at the same level of 2019. Major sporting events, including the Tokyo Olympics, and cultural events such as Expo 2020 Dubai are expected to have a positive impact on the sector. Presenting the results, UNWTO Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili stressed that “in these times of uncertainty and volatility, tourism remains a reliable economic sector.” Against the backdrop of recently downgraded global economic perspectives, international trade tensions, social unrest and geopolitical uncertainty, “our sector keeps outpacing the world economy and calling upon us to not only grow but to grow better,” he added. Given tourism’s position as a top export sector and creator of employment, UNWTO advocates the need for responsible growth. Tourism has, therefore, a place at the heart of global development policies, and the opportunity to gain further political recognition and make a real impact as the Decade of Action gets underway, leaving just ten years to fulfill the 2030 Agenda and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals. Growth The Middle East has emerged as the fastest-growing region for international tourism arrivals in 2019, growing at almost double the global average (+8%). Growth in Asia and the Pacific slowed down but still showed above-average growth, with international arrivals up 5%. Europe, where growth was also slower than in previous years (+4%), continues to lead in terms of international arrivals numbers, welcoming 743 million international tourists last year (51% of the global market). The Americas (+2%) showed a mixed picture as many island destinations in the Caribbean consolidated their recovery after the 2017 hurricanes while arrivals fell in South America due partly to ongoing social and political turmoil.
Limited data available for Africa (+4%) points to continued strong results in North Africa (+9%) while arrivals in Sub-Saharan Africa grew slower in 2019 (+1.5%). Tourism Spending Against a backdrop of global economic slowdown, tourism spending continued to grow, most notably among the world’s top ten spenders. France reported the strongest increase in international tourism expenditure among the world’s top ten outbound markets (+11%), while the United States (+6%) led growth in absolute terms, aided by a strong dollar. However, some large emerging markets such as Brazil and Saudi Arabia reported declines in tourism spending. China, the world’s top source market saw outbound trips increase by 14% in the first half of 2019, though expenditure fell 4%. “The number of destinations earning US$1 billion or more from international tourism has almost doubled since 1998,” said Mr Pololikashvili. “The challenge we face is to make sure the benefits are shared as widely as possible and that nobody is left behind. Italian Exhibition Group returns to China to promote international tourism
Italian Exhibition Group (IEG) is returning to China to promote international tourism business. The appointment is at the Shanghai World Travel Fair (SWTF), one of the major tourism industry expos of Eastern China, the 16th edition of which is being held from 18th to 21st April.
Over 750 exhibitors from 53 countries and regions of the world are awaited at the Shanghai Exhibition Center.
SWTF, co-organized by Europe Asia Global Link Exhibitions (EAGLE) – joint venture created by Italian Exhibition Group (IEG) and VNU Exhibitions Asia – and Shanghai International Convention & Exhibition Corp. Ltd (on behalf of Shanghai Municipal Administration of Culture and Tourism), offers the sector’s trade members a unique business platform and, for the general public, an all-round insight on tourism products, all in the largest tourism region of the Chinese market, Eastern China (China is the world’s largest outbound tourism market, with 149.72 million outbound journeys and a 14.7% increase in 2018).
With over 15,000 trade members expected and a public of 50,000 visitors, the 2019 edition of SWTF will host a busy calendar of appointments and new features.
