Bettina Speckner began her studies in the painting department of the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. After a few years she moved to the jewelry department under Professor Herman Junger receiving her diploma from Professor Otto Kunzli. Bettina has received many awards and accolades for her work including the prestigious Herbert Hoffmann Prize, commendations for the Danner Prize and The Prize of the State of Bavaria. Since her first solo exhibition in 1995, she has shown internationally, both in numerous solo exhibitions and group shows including Brooching it Diplomatically, curated by Helen Drutt English and Micromegas curated by Otto Kunzli.
"Bettina Speckner doesn’t like to talk about her work. When pressed, she speaks of process, or of the parts that compose the whole, in terms of universals of form, color, and structure. Not an unusual response from a jeweler, except that most of Speckner’s work involves mediation of psychologically super-charged photographic images, preciously worked materials, and carefully considered comments on adornment. Photographs inevitably invite speculation and interpretation and each piece offers seductive opportunities to communicate narrative or suggest emotional content. However, in most of the work the image is her subject only as it functions related to its own disruption and abstraction."
Kate Wagle, excerpts from Bettina Speckner, Deliberations and Negotiations. Metalsmith 26.2

View from the Jeweler’s Bench: Ancient Treasures, Contemporary Statements
This exhibition at the Bard Graduate Center in New York City runs through July 7th. It look at how contemporary jewelry makers are now drawing upon antique jewelry and antique techniques to create their own work. I don’t have many pictures to offer, but you can see an itaglio ring made of carnelian and gold dating from the 18th Century at top. Then a shot of the exhibition room itself, which is dark so that all the jewels shine all the more brightly under spotlights. the exhibition features works by contemporary jewelry artists Ashley Buchanan, Jeanette Caines, Lin Cheung, Giovanni Corvaja, Mary Lee Hu, Gabriella Kiss, Otto Kunzli, emiko oye, Mary Hallam Pearse, Nicole Jacquard, Anya Kivarkis, and Kiff Slemmons.
To see a few more pics and info on visiting the gallery, go here: https://www.bgc.bard.edu/gallery/exhibitions/91/a-view-from-the-jewelers

Podcast/ Kim Hill and Otto Kunzli
So disappointed to have missed out on hearing Kunzli speak while he has been in New Zealand. I really like jewellery... like I wrote more about jewellery than videos for art in context...
His red dot pins are so great, it’s kinda punk like wearing a safety pin or something

The Netherlands has several schools of jewelry art, but with the exception of diamond cutting, historically there has never been a presence of any significant jewelry tradition. Dutch designers did not have to contend with the established rules, and as a result they enjoyed considerable freedom in terms of experiment.
"Collect ", the May International Fair of Contemporary Art in London was designed to show the works of many artists who explore the concepts of jewelry, values and beauty through the overthrow of traditional materials and methods. Among them are representatives of Germany, Switzerland, Britain and Holland. Otto Kunzli made a famous rubber bracelet, inside of which is hidden a golden ball. Carl Fritsch grinded the precious stones into powder and then restored them with glue from this powder. Now he is experimenting, drilling holes in precious stones and, linking them together, makes up various configurations of them. Giys Bakker, co-founder of the design company Droog, decorates garments with precious stones. Ulrich Raichhofer makes a necklace in which gold and glass splinters are combined.
The use of non-standard materials is another way to question the notion of "value." Dorothea Prühl uses a tree to create huge necklaces. Christophe Zweveger covers the bones of animals with flesh-colored hair. Lisa Walker collects three-dimensional collages, using plastic details and turning it all into sculptures that can be worn as decorations. Sebastian Busscher cleaves together the eclectic combinations of the materials he finds on the street.
The creation of "stories" for jewelry is another important element of creativity. Such narratives can vary and have an individual or collective source, but individual memories often fit into universal themes. Most prefer stories related to local themes. Gesin Hackenberg drills the circles from the ejected plates, connecting them then to the necklaces, which she puts on the originally used and thus mutilated plates. Iris Eichenberg studies the psychological effect of the transition to a new culture by engaging in the manufacture of brooches and necklaces from interior elements of premises, such as flooring, walls; Used and parts of furniture. Francis Willemstiin even uses old spare parts of cars, evoking her memories of childhood

Otto Künzli, Swiss, L'exposition, bijoux de 1967 à 2012.Considered a master of conceptual jewellery, Swiss artist Otto Künzli has intelligent hands and a mischievous spirit. He makes liberal use of irony to question the assumptions of our society and criticise its shortcomings. He is an iconoclast. He plays with symbols and makes free with cultural references. He uses jewellery as a means of expression, but does not neglect its ornamental function.
