ShoalClan - “In The Tides There Is Strength”

The only remaining Clan after the Vanishing, ShoalClan was historically regarded as rather timid and soft-hearted, as they tended to avoid conflict and didn't have much of a relationship with their neighbors. The other Clans generally agreed that ShoalClan was aloof and thought themselves better than everyone, but had no real skills to prove that belief. ShoalClan was unaware of this perspective. Quite simply, they had no interest in the near-constant battles the other Clans kept having.

ShoalClan was named for the shallow water and submerged sandbank they live near. They were often very sociable and tended to move in small groups. Before the Vanishing, it was uncommon to see a ShoalClan cat entirely on their own. The Clan's motto, “In The Tide There Is Strength”, refers to how nearly unstoppable they are when working as one. Perhaps their most important cultural trait was how closely knit they were. ShoalClan cats aren't known for handling solitude very well.

When trading between the Clans, ShoalClan’s specialties were seashells, turtle eggs, crabs, sea holly, and sea thrift. They also had access to seaweed and seagrass, though these were less popular among the other Clans as they found them smelly and repulsive.

ShoalClan cats believe that the dead find new life as jellyfish- specifically moon jellies. In order for the soul to find new life, the body has to be brought to the very edge of the territory where the water is deepest. Otherwise the spirit gets stuck on land, unable to move on or let go, reliving their final moments over and over again for eternity.

The two known leaders of the Clan are Otterstar (now deceased) and Willetwish. Otterstar's deputy and healer were Sealwhisker and Mumblespark respectively. Willetwish has no deputy, as she has yet to declare the fact that she has nine lives, but her healer as of now is Storkpaw.

Otterstar

I’m bringing back my old warriors ocs and fixing them up a bit. This is Otterstar, she is the leader of one of my clans ShimmerClan. The ShimmerClan cats live on a beach. I unfortunately don’t have much lore for her yet but if I do think of anything I’ll update this post and write some more!

Here are the leaders of the clans. I won’t go much into Silkstar since I already did but I will say she’s the second oldest out of the leaders with Otterstar being the oldest. Drystar is third and Blizzardstar is the youngest.

Otterstar is the leader of Cascadeclan and he’s pretty chill and relaxed. He hates fighting and is the peacemaker. He was actually the one to create the role of the mediators having been one for a short while before becoming leader. He’s the oldest and he and Silkstar are close friends. Alittle note, in their younger days before Silkstar became mates with Whitetail her and Otterstar had a short fling but ended it when they realized their clans come first, plus he has decided to devote himself to the river. He also comes from The Kin having left long ago to follow the river to find his calling. He felt he could do good out in the world and ended up joining Cascadeclan where he earned the respect of the clan and was named deputy then leader.

Drystar is the leader of Snakeclan and he’s an unusually strong fighter. He takes pride in his scars and due to Snakeclan traditions new leaders must get bit by a snake before going to retrieve their nine lives to prove their strength and he wears his snake bite with honor. He’s proud and he loves to show his strength and is always ready to cause some bloodshed. He doesn’t tolerate the younger cats who don’t know what they’re doing.

Blizzardstar is the leader of Flickerclan and she’s righteous and cold. She values loyalty and if you betray her or Flickerclan then you’re labeled a traitor forever. Thats how she views Emberfoot and Goldenstream. She’s stubborn and does not like asking for help so when Flickerclan is having problems with rogues she refuses to ask for help and would rather handle it on her own. Due to being the youngest leader she is looked down by the other older more experienced leaders and hates that they don’t take her seriously. She became leader when the previous leader, Milkweedstar, died from the fire.

Extra rambling/fun facts under the cut :)

So so happy that Shine finally has his full name! I wanted the scene to be a big callback to when he was apprenticed... That was so long ago, and look how far the clan has come!

A few fun facts/meta notes:

-This isn't stated in the comic, but Warmshiver and Shine are kin! I decided they would be back in the very beginning, because their color palates are basically the same. I considered them bringing it up in this page, but the dialogue for it felt a little too clunky. It'll come up if/when it's needed!

IN RECENT HISTORY...

[5 YEARS - NOW]

This is a brief overview of what has been happening in each of the Clan’s recent histories. These include passings of leaders or respected figures, events, and how each Clan is situated by the time roleplay starts. Events pertaining to adoptables and high rank openings remain vague as to allow for applicants to shape their characters history and why they're there, such as how long a leader may have been in power or how long ago they stepped down or passed!

Shoreshimmer Clan

- [adoptable] Minkstar maintains their Landbound Leader position for the last several years, despite being urged to step down due to their progressing age and distant personality in the more recent moons.

- The last Seabound Leader, Otterstar, passes due to an allergic reaction to a bee within the last few years, allowing for their deputy to step up as new lead and choose their own.

- Urchinsneeze, the last Apothecary, stepped down to join the elders sometime within the last decade, but not before naming a successor. Old and frail now, Urchinsneeze scarcely leaves camp.

- The [adoptable] Seabound Deputy, Jellydrift, is chosen for the role in the last few moons after the passing of Sandsong.

- The tentative peace that had been established between Shoreshimmer and Torrentfall 4 years ago is on thin ice, so to speak, as a sudden and strong frost befalls the inland Clan that drives them to fish and hunt closer to Shoreshimmer's territory.

- An influx of humans have been seen on the southern beaches studying the whale bones known was Past Remnants to the Clan on and off through the last year, a minor inconvenience but still uncomfortable.

- One of the lower tidal caverns collapses in the last few moons, thankfully not trapping anyone, but heightening alert in regards to the integrity of the caverns themselves.

- The last few years have had particularly excellent salmon runs, feeding hungry bellies before winter settles in each year, and they are hoping this trend continues into this fall.

- The pack of marine wolves has been seen this past winter and spring making dens on Saltpath Isle, the islet that is only accessible to the cats during low tide due to its distance. This would not raise concern if not for the closeness of the pack to the Clans main caverns. Hopefully they do not return to these dens this year and choose to den somewhere else.

Torrentfall Clan

- The previous leader, Quartzstar, passes during one of the intense floods over the last few years after being swept away, cutting her leadership reign short. Being one of the more progressive leaders of Torrentfall, things she had been changing has left her deputy with pieces to pick up after her.

- The leader prior to Quartzstar, Plumestar, was a rather unremarkable leader who stepped down to join the elders of the Clan.

- Quartzstar's deputy rises up to lead, and eventually [adopt] Tinyfish is chosen for new deputy.

- While salmon runs have been very good for Torrentfall as well, floods have been terrible within the territories the last few years, one of which being the one that claimed Quartzstar's lives. The threat of being swept away has been higher than ever in the last years, causing controversy on whether or not to move camp to a more stable place or if the Clan can weather the storm.

- The previous Apothecary, Dashblink, mysteriously disappears and never returns. Their scent is followed to a certain spot before the trail goes entirely cold and disappears. With no successor in plan, the medics and seers had to find the best to take their place, causing intra-Clan disruptions due to disagreements, before one is settled on.

- Tensions with Shoreshimmer continue to teeter precariously, especially as the Clan is forced further along the rivers and banks due to intense shifts in weather.

- The more traditional of Torrentfall have begun to view Thornrush as a meddler and an unnecessary addition to conflicts between themselves and Shoreshimmer. They feel as though Thornrush always takes Shoreshimmer's side when conflicts arise, and their interventions are becoming unwelcome.

- Run ins with brown bears have been becoming more and more frequent over the last years due to the influx of salmon during the salmon runs. Thankfully no one has gotten hurt yet, but time will tell.

Mistshroud Clan

- The previous leader, Yarrowstar, becomes secretive and paranoid, even amongst his own Clanmates. As age sets in, this turns to confusion and outright lashing out. Eventually he is coaxed into stepping down, allowing for his deputy to step up.

- The current deputy is chosen.

- The current apothecary [adopt] Hazylight has a vision, interpreting it as the incoming winter to be brutal and harsh. Who they share this with remains to be seen.

- The Clan faces some unrest during Yarrowstar's leadership, splintering the insides of the Clan between the secretive and those seeking to hold more open relations with their neighbors. This unrest continues to the current moon, the rift deepening even with a new leader.

- One of the Clans brewers has begun working with toxins over the last few years, exploring the capabilities of creating poisons. This is a polarizing idea, further creating rifts within the Clan.

- The Clan has been battling sickness on and off through the last few years, as despite their best efforts, cats still seem to be getting sick. There's been a further push for making brews and insulations to combat the dampness causing the sickness, as it has progressed to a point where it sounds as though cats have liquid in their chests if it lingers too long.

Thornrush Clan

- The previous leader, Pikastar, disappears before returning with a severe case of amnesia. He doesn't seem to remember anything about the Clan, let alone his position. It is jarring to say the least, but as he cannot lead, he is succeeded by his deputy.

- The new deputy is chosen.

- The apothecary, [adopt] Lichensting, ascends to their current position following rigorous self-training in regards to healing and medical issues. They become one of the most proficient, if not one of the most prickly, that the Clan has in terms of healers.

- Strange sounds come from beyond their borders, but no one is willing to investigate them.

- Thornrush intervenes once more between Torrentfall and Shoreshimmer four years ago, much to the dismay of one of them, before their current treaty is formed.

- A brief but destructive wildfire swept through a part of the territory a year ago, scorching the ground and flora. It has since begun to regrow thanks to the Firetenders fostering the burnt land.

- A handful of apprentices get in trouble for daring one another to swim to the island in the center of the lake, and then actually doing it. Nobody was hurt, but annoyed adults had to swim to the island to fetch the exhausted apprentices.

- Thornrush has begun hosting the firefly festival in the last few years, inviting the other Clans to their old growth redwood forest home to watch migrational fireflies light up the night.

- A prowler that goes by Rustedzeal was exiled in the last two years after attempting to kill a Clanmate using the revered black widows. Many wonder if he had something to do with Pikastar's odd behavior.

Skyreach Clan

-The previous deputy, Sunflight, goes on a small expedition and returns... different. It's as if they have seen something frightening that they cannot describe, sitting and staring stone faced and wide eyed at the wall. One night, Sunflight runs out of camp, visibly frightened as if something were chasing them, and that is the last that is seen of them.

- Due to Sunflight disappearing into the night, Shadowstar has to announce a new deputy, who in turn is their apprentice, Divingmask. This is seen as an odd and impulsive choice as Divingmask is inexperienced and young, and unfit for the deputy position.

- Shadowstar passes in a rock fall, and Divingmask becomes [adopt] Divingstar, much to the shock of the Clan. Murmurs begin to spread, not out of malicion, but worry for the Clan to be led by such a young leader.

- Divingstar assigns a new deputy.

- The previous Apothecary, Quailfleck, who had been treating Sunflight during his fright decides to leave, solemnly saying their goodbyes to the Clan before departing, but not before naming a successor.

- A very rare wolverine is seen, not typically this far up north. It thankfully keeps to itself and moves on quickly.

- The rockfall that killed Shadowstar revealed hidden caves within the mountains.

- Snowfall has already begun early this past month, but it stays warm enough during the day that most of it melts.

The Beginning of Tensions

The trouble began when MireClan, known for their secretive ways and mastery of the marshes, was accused of stealing prey from BrackenClan’s hunting grounds. BrackenClan patrols found muddy paw prints near the Fogwood Divide, and prey left half-buried beneath the ferns. MireClan denied the accusations, claiming BrackenClan was only looking for an excuse to challenge them. At the same time, PrairieClan, proud and independent, found themselves caught in the conflict. BrackenClan sought their alliance, warning that if MireClan grew bold enough to steal from them, they would steal from PrairieClan next. MireClan, in turn, sent envoys to PrairieClan, urging them to remain neutral and not be drawn into BrackenClan’s paranoia.

For moons, the tension festered. Border patrols grew more aggressive, warriors bore fresh scars, and old rivalries deepened.

It only took a single spark to ignite the war.

The Spark of War

One fateful dusk, a BrackenClan patrol caught a lone MireClan apprentice hunting on their side of the Fogwood Divide. Before the young cat could explain or flee, the BrackenClan warriors attacked, leaving him gravely injured. He managed to drag himself back to his Clan, gasping out his attackers' names before he died. MireClan was outraged. Their leader, Otterstar, demanded justice. When Hawkstar of BrackenClan refused to offer reparations, Otterstar declared that they would take justice into their own claws.

BrackenClan, expecting an immediate attack, called upon PrairieClan’s leader, Windstar, for aid. But PrairieClan hesitated. Though they distrusted MireClan, they did not wish to be dragged into a war that was not their own.

Yet war came for them all.

The Battle at Hollow Oak

On the night when the moon was at its highest, MireClan launched their attack— not on BrackenClan’s heart, but on their borders, striking fast and vanishing like shadows into the fog. BrackenClan fought back fiercely, and soon, the battle spread to the Hollow Oak, where warriors clashed beneath its gnarled branches.

Seeing the chaos, Windstar could remain neutral no longer. He led PrairieClan into the fray, seeking to end the battle before it grew worse— but in doing so, he only deepened the bloodshed. Warriors fought like never before, their cries rising to the heavens. The ground became slick with mud and blood, and for the first time since the Clans had formed, true war ravaged the land.

The Red-Stained Sky

The battle raged until dawn, when a storm gathered over the battlefield. Lightning cracked, and rain began to pour, washing away the blood that stained the earth. Then, as if StarClan itself had spoken, the clouds parted just enough to reveal the sky— tainted red by the rising sun. The leaders, battered and bloodied, called for a ceasefire. As they gazed at the crimson sky, a great unease settled over them.

Was this the wrath of their ancestors?

The Aftermath & The Warrior Code

No Clan had won the battle— only lost. Many warriors had died, and the survivors bore wounds that would never fully heal. Shaken, the leaders met in secret beneath the Hollow Oak and vowed never to allow such a war to happen again. From this battle, some of the first laws of the Warrior Code were forged:

No warrior shall kill another unless necessary.

Borders must be respected, and any disputes must attempt to be resolved through words before claws.

Apprentices are not to be fatally harmed in war.

From that day forth, the memory of the War of the Red-Stained Sky lingered, and though the Clans would battle again in the moons to come,

never again would they see the sky stained so red.

It's the silence that wakes her. There's some sound, of course- the ocean is crashing on the shore, as always, and the screams of seagulls echo in the air. But there's no movement in the camp, no squealing of kits, no murmur of warriors talking.

The apprentice shakes the moss off her pelt and slinks out of the den. There's no one. She pokes her head into the warrior's den. There's no one. She searches the nursery and the elder's den. There is no one. She screams for her mother, for Otterstar, for Raydash. There is no one. She falls asleep sobbing, her throat worn raw.

ShoalClan is gone.

so in star of the night there are four clans: heatherclan (the clan where the main characters are from), brookclan (the clan which heatherheart’s love interest alderbrook is from), beetleclan (the clan where heatherclan apprentice berrypaw originally comes from and also where batear resides) and cloudclan. heatherclan is lead by rootstar, brookclan is lead by otterstar, beetleclan is lead by robinstar and cloudclan is lead by sweetstar. things within the territories are peaceful currently but all of the medicine cats of each clan keep receiving strange omens from starclan which none of them can decipher.

for yapping sake so i’m not brought off course i’ll just talk about the medicine cats because i keep thinking about them specifically. so time for introductions to all of the medicine cats and their apprentices in star of the night!

heatherclan has rabbitleap who’s only recently become the clan’s sole medicine cat after his mentor blacktail went to join starclan. blacktail was a very beloved cat within the clan with him being missed by all which has left young rabbitleap with big paw steps to fill in his absence. rabbitleap has the spirit of heatherclan ancestor smallant seemingly tethered to his soul and neither of the pair know why though rabbitleap has been trying hard to figure it out, it’s unhelpful though when smallant has only vague memories of when he was alive. starclan keep sending him visions of an incredibly bright star in the sky though he and the other medicine cats don’t understand what it’s trying to tell him. magpiekit is the future medicine cat apprentice for heatherclan with him already receiving visions from starclan despite still being in the nursery. in these vivid visions he sees his clan’s past varying in time period, sometimes it’ll be from when rabbitleap was an apprentice and sometimes it will be before even mothface, the clan’s oldest elder, was born. rabbitleap is hopeful that magpiekit can help him with his smallant spirit problem. rabbitleap is very hesitant on sharing any starclan business with the clan’s leader rootstar as rootstar has made it clear he doesn’t like rabbitleap much and much preferred blacktail. this strained bond makes rabbitleap fearful as medicine cats and leaders are meant to be close as a result of their positions in the clan and their closer connection to their warrior ancestors in starclan. it seems that rootstar doesn’t care for this though as he doesn’t share anything with rabbitleap and only cares for the power he can gain from his clan.

brookclan has thistlejaw, minnowwhisker and minnowwhisker’s apprentice snowpaw. thistlejaw is the oldest medicine cat in the territories and despite minnowwhsiker having been a full fledged medicine cat for several seasons now with an apprentice of her own he refuses retirement to the elders den siting that the only way that he’d stop serving his clan as medicine cat was if starclan were to drag him off to silverpelt and even then he’d put up a fight. he’s one stubborn fellow and always has been. he’s seen many battles and raids on his clan in his time alive leaving him with stories galore to captivate the kits in the nursery and even the apprentices when they bring him fresh kill. it wasn’t these battles or raids that gave him the worst of his scars however it was a fox attack on camp where he sustained his missing eye and the exposed portion of his jaw along with the exposed skin around the left side of his face where the fox ripped the fur out which never did quite grow back. he fought the fox off defending a brookclan queen who was in the den kitting when he was merely an apprentice. he has lived through three leaderships in brookclan with him not missing a beat in saying how proud he is that his clan has had so many strong and loyal leaders that he’s served under. otterstar and him are very close with the leader often seeking out wisdom from the older cat in important decisions for the clan, a relationship which rabbitleap envies greatly. thistlejaw has had two apprentices in his time as clan medicine cat the first was finchpelt, whom later went to join starclan after returning to the flooded brookclan camp to rescue a kit who had unknowingly been left behind during the great storm he managed to rescue the kit but finchpelt ended up inhaling too much of the flood water which killed him, and his second was minnowwhisker. minnowwhisker is the younger medicine cat who was apprenticed to thistlejaw after she proved to be far too nervous and gentle to be a warrior for the clan with thornstar (the clan leader prior to otterstar) decided she would fare better as a medicine cat where she could use her gentle nature to care for her injured and sick clan mates. despite her nervous demeanour minnowwhisker is a very friendly she cat with her having close bonds with many of her clan mates and even being close to the other clan’s medicine cats. because of thistlejaw’s advancing age otterstar has began to worry for his dear friend and to ensure that his clan remains strong in the event they lose thistlejaw he apprenticed the young snowpaw to minnowwhisker in hopes that having both her and thristlejaw around will make him the a great medicine cat. snowpaw is a young fluffy black tom with a distinct feathery white tail, which he got his name from. he’s rather sarcastic and blunt but does have an enthusiasm to learn, though he may show it differently from the other apprentices, with his training going well. being the only kitten to survive in his litter his mother, pebblefoot, is rather protective of him still even though he’s no longer in the nursery with her frequently checking up on him during her free time.

beetleclan has batear and his new apprentice crookedpaw. batear is a jet black tom with spiky fur, large ears, piercing amber eyes and fangs which poke out of his mouth. batear was originally a warrior apprentice but was moved to the medicine cat den against his wishes to be trained as a medicine cat to replace the elder medicine cat tawnyface. batpaw was angry with this as he was the best warrior apprentice the clan had with his leader and mentor robinstar even telling him so. tawnyface’s old age wasn’t the reason for batear becoming the next medicine cat, though tawnyface was seeking out an apprentice for that reason, it was that robinstar has received a troubling prophecy from starclan which had showed him what great destructive power batpaw could be capable of if he were to be a warrior for the clan and in order to prevent the prophecy from coming true he was made medicine cat apprentice. though batear doesn’t know any of this with tawnyface, robinstar and beetleclan deputy roseflight keeping the secret for fear that if batear found the prophecy out that he would make it come true out of spite. crookedpaw is fairly new to her training but is a fast learner and unlike batear actually wanted to become a medicine cat so she can help take care of the cats in the clan and to soothe their pain. crookedpaw was named after her strange pelt which makes it appear crooked. she shows great promise as a future medicine cat.

cloudclan has ivyheart as its medicine cat. ivy heart is an older pale ginger she cat with ivy green eyes and long droopy fur around her face and on her legs near her paws. ivyheart wasn’t always the clan’s medicine cat instead she stepped into the role after the clan’s medicine cat, twigbelly, and her apprentice, barleypaw, fell ill two seasons ago during leaf bare after illness spread throughout the clan. the illness ended up taking barleypaw’s life along with the other cats in the clan though not nearly as many as what would’ve died if ivyheart hadn’t stepped in and learned the basic remedies using memories from her kithood of watching the medicine cats organise their herbs and berries. twigbelly was left extremely weak even after the illness had passed and never completely recovered which forced him to retire from being the clan’s full time medicine cat moving into the elder’s den. ivyheart hasn’t yet learned everything there is to know yet but when twigbelly is fit enough to supervise her he’s able to keep her right. ivyheart is a very caring cat and loves her family and her clan deeply and just because she’s a medicine cat now doesn’t mean she’s forgotten her many moons worth of warriors training still retaining her fighting edge. unlike the other medicine cats in the territory ivyheart is the only one to have had kits having had two litters prior to becoming a medicine cat. these kits have went on to become brave and noble cloudclan warriors one of which happens to be the clan’s deputy frogsight. during the meeting with the other medicine cats she can’t help but let her motherly nature take over when talking to the younger cats seeing them like her trusted kin. she’s very proud of her fellow medicine cats and loves seeing how much their apprentices are growing each time she gets to see them at the meetings.
