Otis Spann was one of five children. He began playing the piano at the age of seven, with some instruction from Friday Ford, Frank Spann, and Little Brother Montgomery and by the age of 14, he was playing in bands in the Jackson, Mississippi area. Spann was known for his distinctive piano style. He became Muddy Waters' piano player in late 1952 and played on many of Waters' most famous songs, including the blues standards "Hoochie Coochie Man”. He continued to record as a solo artist and session player with other musicians, including Bo Diddley and Howlin' Wolf, during his tenure with the group. He stayed with Muddy Waters until 1968. Otis Spann was an American blues musician, whom many consider to be the leading postwar Chicago blues pianist and was posthumously elected to the Blues Hall of Fame in 1980.
Born Otis Spann on March 21, 1924 (or 1930) in Belzoni or Jackson, Mississippi and died April 24, 1970 in Chicago, Illinois at the age 40-46.

peter chauncey’s VIDEO OF THE WEEK: “Share Our News 2”—peter is based in the San Francisco Bay Area but he comes from Jackson, the state capital of Mississippi and a fulcrum city of the Civil Rights Movement in the 1950s-60s. It's The City of Soul, referenced in films, literature, and a Johnny Cash song. Jackson birthed electronic music composer Milton Babbitt, as well as blues and jazz artists such as Otis Spann and Cassandra Wilson. These elements and more inform peter’s singing & songwriting. “Share Our News” is an older recording with new relevance. The song speaks to the mass awakenings going on regarding race, conflict, and resolution. One single song spoken from the heart speaks to many.
