O Hospital Regional Alto Vale é uma instituição privada, filantrópica mantida pela Fundação de Saúde do Alto Vale do Itajaí (Fusavi). 2019: Harry snubbed in the in memoriam
2020: Luke Perry snubbed in the in memoriam
2021: Misha boggles Oscars viewers
2022: Slap over Allopecia joke
2023: Boredom but Brendan Fraser won for The Whale.
The Oscars tonight kind of boring. Take me back to Oscars 2021 when Misha was Darius' date.

I had totally forgotten Kim KiDuk passed away this year.
Truly a loss for cinema, 3 Iron and Pieta remain two of my favorite art experiences, because that's what they are, much more than movies.
#if you have the chance; watch his movies#kim kiduk#oscars 2021#ps: that in memoriam was disrespectful as fuck

Come on, man! You can't just leave us hanging like this! Did you have another twitter account deactivated and you don't even tell us what you wrote while drunk?! Please? Don't want to share some fun with your loyal readers?
It was the 2021 Oscar. I was mad the Academy completely change the order of the awards just so that they can end it on a Chadwick Boseman win (which he didn't win anyways), and I was bored. Mad+bored= drunk tweets. What else did you expect to happen? Speeding through In Memoriam like they don't care, the irony of no "show not tell" film award show, and after Boseman lost the already boring clip-less show ended up with the biggest popcorn fart endings in the history of the Oscar. At least if it had gone before Director, they could celebrate Zhao's win as the first Asian woman to win Best Director (and only the second woman). Or gone out with Francis McDormand's wolf howl which, while awkward, wasn't as awkward as the ending we actually got, an award for literally the only person who wasn’t there. I said it was the worst Oscar ever and my girlfriend said it was actually the best radio broadcast of the Oscars that she's ever seen. The shitshow has nothing to do with Covid and I asked, should I blame Steven Soderbergh? I think I should blame Steven Soderbergh. His Oscar '21 was worse than Ocean's 12, and that's saying a lot.
Back in 2016 Soderbergh directed The Laundromat, a satire about money laundering and corruption using fake trusts and shell companies. Inspired, I tweeted about Jordan's king (Abdullah II) having bought 3 beachfront Malibu mansions through shell companies undeniably connected to offshore companies. I was, like, come on, those offshore companies didn't just stop at 3 mansions, right? My old colleagues at the Malibu courthouse chimed in and reminisced about the 90's when Middle Eastern oil barons pretty much ran Hollywood and L.A., and which major studios were/are child corporations under the umbrella of major pharmaceutical manufacturers. We had good laughs over which producers were money laundering for crime families but some of them ended up making legit profit when their movies became bonafide box office hits. What were they thinking? Didn't they know the right way to commit tax fraud was through bogus high distribution fees? Did we tag every one of these schmucks? Yes. Yes we did. I had my twitter account for a total of one week until Oscar night.
Studios being child corporations under the umbrella of major pharmaceutical manufacturers is why these conspiracy theories crop up and why they think The Slap was staged.

94th Oscars Reaction
Hello guys, I was not able to show real-time updates about the 94th Academy Awards, due to work. But the giving of Oscars does not seem to matter when everyone’s mind is on the Technical Awards being pre-recorded, Rachel Zegler being shunned and…did Will Smith just slap Chris Rock on the face?
Anyway, here are my off-the-cuff thoughts about the awards and the ceremony itself:
All 8 pre-telecasted awards (I am still annoyed, ABC. Don’t ever do that for ratings!)
Best Supporting Actress: Ariana DeBose - West Side Story as Anita (Almost like Rita Moreno is handing over the baton to Ariana)
Best Cinematography: Dune (Well, really expected that.)
Best Visual Effects: Dune (I mean we can’t honor the Ryan Reynolds’s face inserted on an athlete in Free Guy)
Best Animated Feature Film: Encanto (Well, that makes it five Disney princesses in the ceremony, if you count Stephanie Beatriz, which you shouldn’t)
Best Supporting Actor: Troy Kotsur - CODA as Frank Rossi (Just simply happy!)
Best International Feature Film: Drive My Car (Glad my favorite film of 2021 got the recognition it deserved!)
Best Costume Design: Cruella (Jenny Beavan did not use Dalmatian skins here.)
Best Original Screenplay: Belfast - Kenneth Branagh (At least it’s not Don’t Look Up. PTA, we’ll still cheer for you.)
Best Adapted Screenplay: CODA - Sian Heder (This is a surprise!)
Best Documentary Feature: Summer of Soul (...Or, When the Revolution Could Not Be Televised) (Did Will Smith just slap Chris Rock on the face?)
Best Original Song: "No Time to Die" from No Time to Die - Billie Eilish and Finneas O'Connell (Now we can call them Academy-Award winning Billie Eilish and Finneas)
Best Director: Jane Campion - The Power of the Dog (Jane really is the driving force of The Power of the Dog. The Academy forgave her comments.)
Best Actor: Will Smith - King Richard (Smith, take your time. But you got some explaining to do.)
Best Actress: Jessica Chastain - The Eyes of Tammy Faye (Seriously, the makeup of the film is astounding. So, might as well recognize it.)
Best Picture: CODA (It’s nice to see the first streaming movie garner that Best Picture Oscar. Netflix, don’t panic.)
For ceremony highlights:
The hosts: They are serviceable. I just hate the focus on Twitter is on shaming Amy Schumer’s weight and dress.
The performances: Megan Thee Stallion is a distracting one for “We Don’t Talk About Bruno”. The best is “Be Alive” with Beyoncé.
The tributes: So, you nearly shirked Rachel Zegler, but you brought in Tony Hawk, Kelly Slater and Shaun White for the James Bond tribute. Okay, who brought in the ESPN guys to the room?
The memoriam: Nice to have separate tributes for Sidney Poitier, Ivan Reitman and Betty White. Just don’t undercut it with a gospel medley. Kind of lowers the seriousness.
And that moment: Enough joking or demeaning over Will Smith or Chris Rock. I understood Smith’s story, but that was unprofessional. Rock is already an off-the-cuff comedian. But…that was just tone-deaf. This will be a hard discussion for days to come.

I watched the new installment of Netflix's DEATH TO 2021 -

which is a great laugh and featured great performances by Hugh Grant, Diane Morgan and Tracey Ullman, among others (with Laurence Fishburne narrating and TED LASSO's Nick Mohammed providing commentary as the piece's director). One of the bits was about the 2021 Oscars having a new In Memoriam section for people who were cancelled. This "memoriam" included:

- Elsewhere on Netflix is Adam McKay's very divisive DON'T LOOK UP. One of the many, many, many actors in the film is Sir Mark Rylance.

While doing press for DON'T LOOK UP, Rylance spoke briefly of Luca Guadagnino's BONES AND ALL starring his DON'T LOOK UP costar Timothee Chalamet.

I wonder if interviewer Ella Kemp begged British GQ to let her interview Rylance due to his place in the Armie - Timothee Cinematic Universe.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/a4b501f1267373d1af01b0c6c27b371a/0db6d758628457fe-d0/s540x810/d18c503d8cde8f54d72de615331271d77e228387.jpg)

Rylance has a great fairytale second act. Like many fairytales it involves heartbreak. Rylance had a chance to do a Steven Spielberg films in the 80s but at the same time he was offered this big opportunity, he received an even bigger one. Rylance, a theatre legend, was offered to direct a season at the National Theatre and produce any play he wanted. He passed on Spielberg. and as fate would have it, Rylance met his future wife at the theatre company He worked steadily in the UK in film and theatre, happily so, especially when the Hollywood projects he would do were dismally received. In 2012 his 28-year old step-daughter, filmmaker Nataasha Van Kampen passed away suddenly. In the subsequent years he would suddenly get Hollywood film offers, including another from Spielberg offering him BRIDGE OF SPIES. Rylance feels that these offers are from the guiding hands of Nataasha who had always wanted him to do more films.

round up // MARCH 22

A short summary of this month’s pop culture picks: Cons! True crime! Cacti!
As always, It’s difficult to summarize my miso-mash of recommendations each month, so don’t be surprised when you see Tony Bennett and a magazine memorial below. And with the Oscars finally airing this month, 2021’s film year finally comes to a close. I’m still processing all of the events of the evening, and you don’t to hear anymore talk about THAT moment, so I’ve just got a few more recommendations from the list of nominees for you.
March Crowd-Pleasers
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/b45e61b461df56fa7587ed5697b895cb/94b9d48909a14c67-2f/s540x810/f3a8a1f6b2248c4ef782b576d7a448ddf8e39b18.jpg)
1. Queenpins (2021)
Pals from The Good Place Kristen Bell and Kirby Howell-Baptiste tell a true story about extreme couponing gone wrong! My expectations were low for a Paramount+ original movie, but with a cast also including Paul Walter Hauser, Joel McHale, and Vince Vaughn, I gave it a chance. What a pleasant surprise! If you’re a fan of any of those performers or if you have any interest in true crime stories more bizarre than gruesome, it’s worth a watch. Crowd: 8/10 // Critic: 7/10
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/377d8a77e2de55d58cd5e7f9e88e26f6/94b9d48909a14c67-b4/s540x810/a241399c141e82035bce8bead7799290a04e1854.jpg)
2. Uncharted (2022)
Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg are taking inspiration from Indiana Jones and Jack Sparrow as they search for Ferdinand Magellan’s lost treasure. Secret tunnels, intricate maps, and Antonio Banderas hamming it up as the villain make it one of the most fun big screen outings I’ve had in awhile. Don’t think too hard about plot holes—just sit back and enjoy the adventure. Crowd: 9.5/10 // Critic: 6.5/10
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/47ffcdb2e9aed10c18bfa748f8d697dd/94b9d48909a14c67-59/s540x810/6d2b8899e4cb5f299ab704050b918adc9ec070c9.jpg)
3. The Prestige (2006)
Christian Bale and Hugh Jackman are rival magicians battling through years of long cons! David Bowie(?!), Michael Caine, Rebecca Hall, Scarlett Johansson, Piper Perabo, and Andy Serkis get caught up in their schemes, and we get dazzled by the Christopher Nolan trickery. After watching, I naturally had to rank all of Nolan’s major films by Dead Wife Energy on Letterboxd. Crowd: 9/10 // Critic: 9/10
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/cb914938d07042bb56efc79a6f4624e6/94b9d48909a14c67-89/s540x810/421ea9d7bfa9c9f6acefa9cef885c347023de8b9.jpg)
4. 21 (2008)
If you can get past the Kevin Spacey of it all, 21 is a pretty fun true crime thriller. Jim Sturgess and Kate Bosworth are MIT geniuses making millions counting cards in Vegas. Spacey is their mastermind professor, and Laurence Fishburne is the Vegas bouncer trying to protect the casinos’ cash. I couldn’t keep up with all their Blackjack hijinks, but we can all connect with a story about struggling college students. Crowd: 8.5/10 // Critic: 7.5/10
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/32ca0e88971ad3181725081fd499b515/94b9d48909a14c67-95/s540x810/781c4abb6244bad5be2b38dc1f7dc4687655cb17.jpg)
5. Desert Botanical Garden (Phoenix, AZ)
I usually highlight cultural experiences around the arts, but if there’s anything that’s going to make me branch out, it’s a garden full of cacti. I made my first trip to the Southwest this month, and the landscapes lived up to my hopes and dreams after traipsing so many Western movies the last few years. (John Ford knew what was up.) You can find Chihuly glass installations that complement the foliage set up around the Garden, but the one-of-a-kind greenery and butterfly exhibit don’t need any dressing up to make them worth a visit.

6. In Memoriam: Entertainment Weekly + InStyle Print Editions
And now an ode to two publications that helped me figure out a little more about myself.
In the middle school and high school, I became a regular EW.com reader. Almost every day after school, I’d check out the headlines, slideshows, and reviews, eventually steering me from celebrity gossip sites (thrilling to a gossip-fueled sixth grader) to film history, critical thinking about art, and, okay, also some red carpet Best Dressed lists. I started subscribing to the magazine as an adult, and reading it cover-to-cover in the pool on Friday nights was just becoming a pastime.
When I turned 15 in 2007, my mom bought a super-fat September issue of InStyle with Gwen Stefani on the cover. I still have that issue on a shelf, and because I’m a weirdo, I have almost every issue from the decade-plus I’ve subscribed. (Note to self: Ask a therapist about this.) I stayed so long because InStyle never wavered in its commitment to making self-presentation and self-confidence accessible to every woman, its finesse at explaining trends and industry moments to non-insiders, and its incredible fashion photography. I’m not exaggerating when I say InStyle helped me figure out how to dress in high school (I call Middle School my “Fashion Dark Ages,” and you would, too, if you saw pictures), and I literally never skipped articles in the magazine for years to help me get there. At 15, I also discovered my loves for Audrey Hepburn and John Hughes movies, and those pop culture icons and this magazine came at just the right time to help me figure out what makes me come alive. (Note to therapist: There’s something in here that I could pay you thousands of dollars to unpack.)
While both mastheads are continuing online, I’m in denial the only two magazines I subscribe to won’t be showing up in my mailbox next month. Email newsletters and images on Pinterest are not the same as flipping through glossy pages, and I’ll miss them both dearly.

1. CODA (2021)
CODA may be an unlikely Oscar contender, but it’s no surprise it’s a fan favorite. Read my Crowd and Critic reviews in my latest installment of my Best Picture Project.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/88fd5652d144bf293909f725c8f06291/94b9d48909a14c67-8e/s540x810/e98abc7e9a18a41ccc629d6ea4567d3306e96511.jpg)
2. Licorice Pizza (2021)
On paper, this movie is not for me, which is why I didn’t rush to check it out. Sometimes I love it when I’m wrong! As a longtime HAIM fan, I loved seeing Alana in a role as complex and alive as this one, and the soundtrack is the best argument I should give ‘70s music and fashion another evaluation. (Sorry not sorry, but it’s not usually my thing.) If you have trouble believing this movie is a feel-good vibe start-to-finish, remember we live in a world where The Graduate, Harold and Maude and Lost in Translation are bona fide classics and the mostly innocent relationship in Licorice Pizza is less concerning than any of those May-December relationships. Crowd: 8/10 // Critic: 10/10

3. One Last Time: An Evening with Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga (2021)
I raved about this duo’s latest album, and this broadcast performance at Radio City Music Hall is additional proof they are some of the GOATs.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/33986e4eca882110ae3ec86c3af167fe/94b9d48909a14c67-61/s540x810/c12a131a4a38023c680531382710c3c14621c1d5.jpg)
4. Gun Crazy (1950)
It’s not Bonnie and Clyde, but it’s basically Bonnie and Clyde. Tense, tragic, and romantic all at once, Peggy Cummins and John Dall are killer as a pair of killers, and baby Russ Tamblyn makes an appearance, too. Crowd: 8.5/10 // Critic: 9/10
5. Good Reads
The reads I spent the most time with this month, including musings on Hollywood (duh), how we talk about controversial topics, and the further-developing #MeToo conversation.

6. Musical Instrument Museum (Phoenix, AZ)
In one room, you can see guitars Elvis and Johnny Cash played. In another (and another and another), you can see instruments from literally every instrument in the world. Speaking of Tony Bennett, the cafe has a quote on the wall from Tony Bennett calling this his favorite museum, but you don’t have to be as musical as him to find it impressive.

7. The Oscars
I chatted with ZekeFilm editor-in-chief Jim Tudor about our Oscars predictions and expectations in the latest episode of ZekeTalk—as you may have guessed we did not see THAT moment coming. I’m not pretending everything about this telecast would’ve worked even without it, but there were a still highlights worth catching:
Beyoncé’s performance of “Be Alive”
Troy Kotsur wins Best Supporting Actor
The Oscars Celebrates the 60th Anniversary of James Bond - I love a good montage!
CODA accepts the Oscar for Best Picture
Also this March…
Still not ready to stop move on from this year’s Oscar nominees? Me either. I just wrote about Being the Ricardos and West Side Story for ZekeFilm.
Also at ZekeFilm this month, we watched and wrote about major movies we missed from the 1910s. I checked out D.W. Griffith’s Intolerance, and, boy, was it looooong.
Button up your uniform and step into your dancing shoes! On SO IT’S A SHOW?, Kyla checked out Rory’s inspiration for a DAR event, the Hollywood Canteen. We watched the star-studded movie that promoted it, and then we looked into the other movie we mixed it up with, how Hollywood A-listers supported the war effort during World War II, and whether Rory’s idea was a hit. Spoiler: When the Andrews Sisters show up to sing, it’s a piperoo!

In Memoriam — My gentleman boy, Oscar (Jan. 2005 – Sept. 2021)
In Memoriam — My gentleman boy, Oscar (Jan. 2005 – Sept. 2021)
My heart is broken with Oscar’s passing, even though I know he lived a full life, lived it well and was loved throughout entirely. The house is quieter, a special energy is missing from our home, and the tears flow unexpectedly and fully. However, my heart, while in mourning, is bigger than before Mr. Oscar came into my life in 2005 and now capable of loving more deeply, of this I know for sure…
