COME HOME WITH ME | a hadestown oc animatic - full video

it's finally here! two weeks of work boiled down to two minutes. haha. i'm so happy with how this little passion project turned out. i was blessed to see the west end hadestown cast three times last year and was blown away every time. wanted to give a little something back with a personal touch. ❤️

The rat catcher also known Orvyn. Low-born and lacking renown, finds himself a master of behavior. The king’s lakeys, awfully aware of the rats plaguing the palace, advise the 23 year old to put his skills to use. He gets a dry place to sleep in return and Orvyn can only oblige. It’s the smart thing to. It would add a couple more years to his probably short life.

Being born in the sewers below the capital, he isn’t afraid of the small crooks and cracks of the tunnels, and manages to learn the rats’ habits. Whenever Orvyn is on duty the palace is clean and rat free, much to the disliking of the other catchers.

style practice - naoki urasawa

a couple of days ago i asked some folks to give me artists to try and imitate the styles of. obviously, i decided to draw orviah in them all because what better way to do some studies than by using it as an excuse to draw your favorite blorbos. naoki urasawa was among the named.

i've been meaning to read urasawa's works but time is not really a friend to me so alas. i tried watching the monster anime some time ago and my attention span simply could not hold steady. it's already pretty weak and monster is very slow-paced so that combination was pretty lethal to me. anyway, that all being said - this was very fun to do. i'm excited to do more. i learned a lot about what makes urasawa stand out from other mangaka who lean into this style of realism. it's really cool to figure out how subtle some of these differences are and yet how much they make a style iconic.

it was a bit tricky to do as i had little needed reference to work with. i had to figure out how to stylized uriah's white curly hair, how to stylize orvyn's scars, how to stylize both of their noses. something as simple as boots even. clothes was also hard because urasawa focuses so much on faces and the upper body in general in his work. despite the difficulties, this was a huge learning experience and also very fun to do and ultimately, i am SO proud of how they turned out! i hope you guys like them too. :-) can't wait to do more of these, tho they will have to wait until i move next week.

OH, also - i forgot to mention. i'm drawing them in their different AU versions for each style based on what i feel will be more fitting! this is them for their hadestown AU because i felt their fashion reminded me a bit of something i'd see in monster specifically. hehe. ❤️

Coming from someone who last night had a cat run across my face and slice open right above my eyelid and I'm lucky both my eyes are safe...

When Orvyn got that scar on his face that thing would've bled so freaking much, just full on waterfall. The soreness of it healing sucks. The amount of times accidentally hitting it because you just want to brush hair out of your eye. The want to rub your eye but you can't. The amount of times you have to answer "omg what happened to your face?!" (Bonus points for coming up with a different story every single time)
