did Vash really have a romantic interest in Meryl?

In the case of Meryl, there are several signs she has developed feelings for him. She accepts it and lets Vash be himself.

Mmm with Vash it’s hard to answer…

We see they’re good friends…she can be a bit tough with him but Vash always smiles to her.

I think that’s really sweet and he acts like that with everyone…

BUT

When Zasie kidnapped Meryl, Vash goes to rescue her and yes, that is something he could do for anyone who needs his help…but in Trigun Maximum chapter 28 when Vash suffers remembering all July’s tragedy…he thinks about Meryl in danger and keeps going.

And when he finally finds her in chapter 29, the worry and fear in his face is undeniable.

Then, there’s something really interesting FOR HIM happening after that.

Meryl witnesses July’s tragedy in a memory…and then she begins to be afraid every time she sees Vash in his angel form.

After seeing her so frightened, Vash says he feels like crying…

That could have separate them…

BUT

Vash receives a revolver from Meryl, being really surprised that she still wants to look after him, and smiles…relieved.

Meryl continues by his side, even after seeing his scariest power…and cares about him no matter the circumstances.

If we look for a romantic relationship…I think this is more complicated than that.

Oxford Languages defines romance as a feeling of excitement and mystery associated with love.

We can’t say Vash is excited or nervous about Meryl…All we see is Vash nervous about Meryl crying most likely because he doesn’t know what to do, but that’s all (and that’s really cute).

Instead of that, Vash could be more oriented to “love” instead of “romance”.

But for someone like him, who is 150 years old, full of sorrows and regrets…what does “love” mean?

Cambridge Dictionary says:

Love is used to describe all strong feelings of closeness and care between two people.

After all they have been though together, they developed really strong feelings for each other, especially closeness and care.

And there is this moment, one of the most precious to me in this relationship.

Almost at the end, Vash is going to confront Knives but he makes a promise to Meryl before he leaves.

(Yes, we know he was a bit late but remember he was really injured, he had to heal at human speed at that time…but he was already on his way when he was found again).

He could have made promises many other times in his life but here he doesn’t only says he will return. He, who never asks nothing from anyone, asks her to wait for him.

Ok yes, he may be capable of love all humans…but he has always been a lonely wolf. He has friends, but he always travels alone.

It is until he meets Wolfwood and Meryl that he wants to stay with someone.

And Meryl is the one Vash wants to wait for his return.

Winter 2024 Anime Review

Solo Leveling - 24 Episodes

This has been and will be my most anticipated series. We've only scratched the surface of the story and people are going nuts. I've been reading the light novel translations for a while now and I'm not even a little ready for when certain things are animated.

Easily one of the best anime adaptations out there. More to look forward to.

Sidenote - A1 is killing the animations considering it's one of their bigger ones in a while.

Also - they did a really solid job with the sound design, a lot of the timing made certain scenes feel just that much more intense.

9/10 - Amazing

Frieren - 28 episodes

Such a unique watching experience.

I think so many shows these days are fast paced, and action oriented, especially within the fantasy genre. This is such a relaxing and enjoyable watch.

The story is moving and the animations are warm and fuzzy.

Not much I'd change about the series.

10/10 - Masterpiece

The Apothecary Diaries - 24 Episodes

The second half of this series kept up with the flow of the first half really well. I feel like that shouldn't be a feat but it really is these days.

I genuinely love watching the subtleties of the romance in this series and the medical mystery cases are just as fun to watch.

The story has so many little bits and pieces working throughout the show and the last episode had me wrecked for reasons I never saw coming.

Just overall a big fan of this series.

9/10 - Amazing

Delicious in Dungeon - 12/24 Episodes

This series has no right to be this much fun.

The animations match the energy of the show so well and I think it's one of the best "entertainment" series of the season.

I was worried it would start to repeat itself but found that the characters become the highlight of the series and I looked forward to every episode.

(This is the series this season that I'm high-key obsessed with.)

Shangri-La Frontier - 25 Episodes

One of the most fun looking MMORPG animes I've seen. I remember reading the teaser manga a while ago and was stoked to see it animated. Just a genuinely well done gamer oriented series.

They do such a good job at showing exactly the kinds of small things gamers pay attention to and some of the combat learning is stellar.

Not to mention the sound track honestly did not need to go as hard as it did?!

Really hoping they continue on with this for another season.

Bucchigiri?! - 12 Episodes (Updated)

I haven't seen any coverage for this show for some reason. It's a one shot that Mappa animated. The story felt quite slow but I personally had fun with it, the character design was satisfying - gives a bit of Jojo's and SK8 vibes. After a few weeks I couldn't stop thinking about it and went back - it ends up being a decently satisfying story. It's rare to see single season shows and I think that was really refreshing.

(Opening and ending are both bangers)

Mashle - Season 2 - 12 Episodes

I decided to watch this once all the episodes had aired. I found that it's not one you can be in the mood to watch all the time, but when you are it's just as hilarious as the first season.

I've enjoyed the pacing of the story and I'm looking forward to future seasons.

Unwanted Undead - 12 Episodes

Another series I read the manga for when it premiered. There's something about this series that gets me hooked. While the animations aren't anything of note, I find the story is oddly unique and I ended up bingeing all the episodes in one go. Definitely one I'm curious to see where it goes.

Mr. Villain's Day Off - 12 Episodes

This is purely for my own personal interest in attractive moody villains with alter ego's. It's a lot of fun to watch and it's just so wholesome.

A theory on the creation of Anime Goemon and why he is a different person from Manga Goemon

oh boy this is going to be long

First, we must look closely at Chapter 5 of the original manga. It is titled “Suspense Zone” and it is based off of the Arsène Lupin story of the Devil’s Red Ring.

The chapter was originally the 8th Chapter of the manga before being reordered in later publications, and it released in September 28, 1967. I suggest you give it a read for yourself.

The Red Ring functions differently here, however, in that it periodically transforms the victim into somebody else, almost like their opposite. In this chapter, it is Mr. Danshiyaku, the criminal who aims to take over the country by controlling the Yakuza, who transforms into the master hitman, Master Koroshi. In sticking with Monkey Punch’s interest in Western culture contrasting with Eastern culture, we see the Western Danshiyaku become his opposite, the Eastern Koroshi.

Lupin decides to work with Master Koroshi, asking him to kill Danshiyaku to prevent his takeover, but by a cruel fate, Koroshi is killed in a trap created by Danshiyaku. It is then that Lupin reveals they are really the same person.

Master Koroshi’s outfit, long face, hairstyle, sanpaku eyes, the lines beneath the eyes to show age, and his habit of closing one eye resemble that of Anime Goemon’s, don’t they?

Gone are details like the big eyes, thick eyebrows, long eyelashes, the kimono with the cross pattern resembling a student uniform, etc.

This dramatic scene where he walks out is the same too. Also similar to Anime Goemon, Koroshi has moments of shock where he breaks character like here.

That is because Anime Goemon is based off of Master Koroshi, not Manga Goemon!

For that we must look at when planning began for the Pilot. Yasuo Otsuka stated it was in the summer of 1968, with the idea for a Lupin anime being first proposed around July 25 (you’ll see how this lines up with Goemon’s introduction to the manga soon enough). Yutaka Fujioka, however, stated in an interview in 1978 that it was started 12 years ago in the summer of 1967 when he was 39 years old, but these numbers do not line up unless 1967 is changed to 1968. Perhaps it was some kind of mistake with his memory.

After planning, the team would put together a Pilot loosely adapted from the chapter “Triple Play” released in October 3, 1968, and “Camera Tricks” released in October 17 of the same year.

At the time of planning for the Pilot, however, Goemon was not yet a friend to Lupin in the manga. The serial drama that introduced Goemon as an enemy to Lupin ran in 1968 from April 4 to April 25, but the ending 4th chapter to it had not yet resolved the conflict between them. After this series, there was a break before Goemon would appear again.

In fact, Monkey Punch has stated in an interview for Weekly Manga Action on May 20, 2004, that Goemon was originally never going to be a friend to Lupin, remaining an enemy until the very end. For these reasons, Goemon was not planned to appear in the Pilot.

It was only until August 15 to August 29 in the Kobudo series that Monkey Punch had resolved the conflict between Lupin and Goemon, changing his mind to make them instead friends to also help push the oriental feeling of the manga.

Goemon was created to bring a more Japanese-like character into the series. He is first introduced as resentful of Western ideals, and Lupin on the other hand disregards Eastern ideals. It’s until the second series that they both start learning to accept each others’ cultures, and Goemon decides to reject his masters. His masters tell him his idea of mixing together previous fighting techniques into a new one is a terrible idea simply because they do not wish to accept any new cultural ideas, but they also cannot accept Lupin simply being just as strong with his newer techniques either, and so they provide him with arbitrary advice and even try to make him cold-hearted, to which Goemon responds with:

"I appreciate your advice so far.

But all you have is the past that you have experienced. On the contrary, I have the future that I am about to experience. Do you understand? That is the difference between us!!"

This change of mind was late into planning for the Pilot, and so it was too late. Suddenly, Goemon was now a part of the main 5 and the staff had no idea what to do. 

The staff had put together the plan for the Pilot with the focus of highlighting the dynamic between Lupin and his dedicated partner Jigen, but if they were to add Goemon into this dynamic, where would he belong?

Monkey Punch tends to develop his characters further and exemplify specific traits as time goes on, but at the time of the manga, the only dynamic Jigen and Goemon could provide as a trio to Lupin was simply serving to him as a gunman and swordsman. The staff needed to somehow figure out how Goemon would bring something new to the dynamic without interfering with what they had already established for the pilot.

The staff was very dedicated to sticking to the source material, but they could not bring in Manga Goemon as he was, so they proposed an idea, what if they instead modeled Goemon off of Koroshi? He would still be a character based off of Monkey Punch’s manga, and his interactions with Lupin are strong enough to bring over. The planning team may have been under stress due to this, and so this seemed like an easy solution.

Also, considering that Koroshi as a character helps represent the Eastern vs Western clash, like Goemon, it would be reasonable to think that he may be MP’s prototype to Goemon. Given how MP fleshes out his characters over time, the staff would tend to try to predict these by exaggerating specific character traits, so perhaps by exaggerating Goemon’s samurai-like qualities and aging him up, he would serve as a greater contrast to Lupin and perhaps become as how MP would develop him later on. Obviously that was not the case in the manga, as MP would stick with Goemon representing a theme of acceptance of both past and future.

It is due to this that in the anime, Goemon sticks with his culture completely, and so it is him who is rejected by his master, who tries to kill him. The staff created Goemon with the intent of him never changing his mind about cultural values, and so although Goemon does join Lupin regardless, the theme originally told in the manga of acceptance is left incomplete.

The anime does try to toy with this idea of Goemon accepting other culture, such as when he is first introduced he secretly listens to the radio when he doesn’t think his master is there, or those few times in Part 2 where he is willing to try something new, but it tends to be dropped immediately in favor of far more moments where he is instead stubborn.

There are other ambiguities that the anime and pilot would seek to resolve too. Goemon’s sword is made to be the Zantetsuken, the iron cutting sword, before his sword is later to be explained in the manga as the Takemitsu, a bamboo sword his family passed down, and in Shin Lupin it is the Ryusei, the sword of a shooting star. Due to Zantetsuken’s creation as this sword capable of cutting nearly everything, maybe done as to provide more emphasis on the alchemy formula Lupin wishes to steal and to simplify Goemon’s ability, there became more focus on Goemon’s sword itself, with his character in many adaptations only existing to cut things, but the manga focuses more on it being his sheer strength that allows him to cut steel with bamboo, and even tear a person apart in hand to hand combat. I mentioned in the past too that in Shin Lupin, there is even a moment where he cuts steel without Ryusei but with an ordinary sword.

Additionally, the manga only makes it clear that Goemon is the descendant to the legendary thief Ishikawa Goemon, but the pilot adds that he is the 13th of his family to hold the name.

Now, let’s look at the unique relationship that Koroshi provides for Anime Goemon to model.

In the anime, Goemon tends to work on his own, leaving Lupin if he does not agree with a plan. The pilot also describes him as a lonely, wandering man. This is pulled from details from Koroshi such as here, where Lupin describes Koroshi as a “recluse.”

There is also here where Koroshi refuses to follow Lupin because he believes it is nonsense. Unlike Jigen, he serves as a partner who only acts in his own interests.

He’s just as irritable as in the anime, where Lupin describes him in the opening as someone who is scary when angry. This irritability works well with his disdain for Western culture.

In the pilot, there is a detail where when Lupin is made aware that his wine was poisoned, and he states that Goemon would not be the kind of person to do such a thing. Goemon is portrayed as wanting a fair 1 on 1 duel with Lupin, which is also reflective of Koroshi, who wants a fair 1 on 1 duel with Danshiyaku.

It could also be thought by the staff that Koroshi and Lupin would work well together because of the respect and similarities they share, which would also help explain them not fighting anymore.

They both leave behind written challenges as dignified criminals, and in the anime, Goemon insists on challenging Lupin in such a formal manner, unlike in the manga where he just appears constantly to attack by surprise when Lupin would rather not.

Lupin also pities him throughout the chapter, and in the anime when Goemon is introduced, Lupin looks down upon him and his belief in his sword technique.

Also, the anime frequently has moments where Goemon seemingly appears from nowhere to rescue Lupin when he is about to die, and Koroshi does the same too.

Yes, Danshiyaku wielded a gun in the manga, but to make him more samurai-like for Goemon they gave him the sword. In general, you can see that the anime, even in its adaptation of when Goemon is first introduced, changed his manner of speech significantly and added certain lines to give Goemon a more hostile, but samurai-like feel.

There exists a scene only in the anime in the episode in which Goemon is first introduced, where Fujiko lies to Lupin saying that Goemon took advantage of her. This is actually the opposite as Goemon is naive and gets nervous around women.

This is a scene and character trait pulled from Danshiyaku, and given that he exists as the opposite to Koroshi, the staff figured how Koroshi would act towards women and applied this to Anime Goemon, which is unlike that of Manga Goemon who keeps his composure.

In a way, this would create an interesting dynamic for him between Lupin, who is a womanizer, and Jigen, who dislikes women.

They also based the relationship off of Koroshi because they were unsure of how to explain Manga Goemon suddenly becoming friends with Lupin. In the original manga it’s not explained very well and played off as a joke as to why Lupin went from being very annoyed of Goemon’s antics to taking him in, and it doesn’t help either that Lupin had murdered Goemon’s friend, Majin. Goemon obviously wanted to learn from someone new, but it seems strange that he would forgive so easily, and Lupin doesn’t exactly have much going for him working with Goemon either.

One could say that MP focuses more on the fun of a concept rather than the explanation for it. Many of his stories simply exist as what-if situations, but given how this story is meant to be treated as canon, the staff insisted on something more logical, and with the other reasons for adding Koroshi in, he seems to also provide his own explanation for working with Lupin, with it being a mutual respect. Manga Goemon is younger than Lupin, and so their friendship begins at first as instead him respecting Lupin like he is his master.

To portray this older Anime Goemon, the staff picked a voice actor that would sound older and more mature to fit the samurai tone, with Goemon even sounding older than Lupin.

To quote Monkey Punch on Anime Goemon in comparison to the original:

“In the anime, he's changed a lot, but he's really more like a young boy.“

The truth, however, is that Koroshi was never even MP’s prototype for Goemon. The real prototype was Nitenzi Ondo of Western Samurai.

He looks and acts much closer to the bright and cheerful Manga Goemon, who seeks out justice for others and hates needless killing, and unlike Koroshi, these two both speak in a tone that is very un-samurai like. The theme of this work was that of a young samurai stumbling upon Western society, making friends and enemies in the process as he got accustomed to this new life while also bringing a part of his old life. The focus is on how Western and Eastern cultures clash and work together, and it is also the precursor to Bakumatsu Yankee.

Monkey Punch had wanted a more Japanese feeling to his Lupin manga, and given that Western Samurai had been released only 3 months prior to Goemon’s introduction, Monkey Punch had decided to bring Nitenzi Ondo to the world of Lupin under a new name, Ishikawa Goemon.

Monkey Punch contemplated between a the names of famous Japanese thieves such as Nezumi Kozo, of which the Nezumi clan would later become a frequent villain group in the manga, or Ishikawa Goemon, and it was decided on Goemon because there was another famous manga at the time using the name Nezumi.

Notice how Manga Goemon’s design was not actually based on the original Ishikawa Goemon, and rather that influence is by name only. Manga Goemon’s real influence is of the film Moeyo Ken and its character, the young Okita Souji, who Monkey Punch would later portray in Bakumatsu Yankee. Nitenzi Ondo’s sword was also changed to appear more like a cane for Goemon, reflective of the film Zatoichi that also helped inspire him.

So, if this mistake occurred with the Pilot, why is it that the anime simply did not correct itself? Well the issue lies in that Part 1′s production was based around using the Pilot and whatever extra work that staff may have also left behind as their primary base for the Anime rather than the manga. The style of the Pilot was changed to that of Part 1, and so the new staff was reinterpreting Pilot Goemon, thus pushing him further away from the Manga original.

When Part 1 later became popular, it would be difficult for the Part 2 team to move away from this. Early Part 3 interestingly tries to combine the two, perhaps in an effort to slowly push him back to the source material, but over time his design began to lose the traits of his Manga version until it became like the more popular Part 2, which tends to be used for inspiration more.

Most Lupin adaptations, out of fear of him not being recognized by the audience as Goemon, simply avoid using the manga as a reference. Given that the anime also titles Goemon as a samurai, which the manga does not, there is also more push for him to act as one.

Personally, I think Anime Goemon is a very fun character to have around in the franchise, but it does upset me as someone who really likes his Manga counterpart more. I wish the Anime version’s existence wouldn’t prevent the Manga version from existing in an adaptation at all. When there is any influence from the manga, there always seems to be bias from the previous anime, but it’s very apparent that they are 2 completely different people, rather than just different interpretations of the same person. I feel that it’s also important when looking at his Manga character to not see it with the bias of the Anime because it seems then as if his character is very inconsistent, when it really isn’t. I hope someday he’ll be properly animated.

hawks has a capricorn sun, scorpio moon, and leo rising. this feels like a pretty balanced big three! it describes his public persona pretty well, imo. he’s hard-working, as evidenced by his status as the number-two hero. i think his scorpio moon is well-represented in his “i-don’t-give-a-shit” persona. because he does give a shit. he just doesn’t act like it. his leo rising is....... well, yeah. he’s super popular, everyone loves him, and he’s got a larger-than-life persona – although it’s kind of all curated. that falls in line with the sign of leo and specifically its placement in his ascendant – it’s what he projects to the public. his cockiness is..... very leo lmao i don’t think i’d change a thing here! these three placements meld together really well in his case.

hawks is so cunning. he’s able to think logically about things and has foresight that not a lot of other heroes seem to have. he’s much more realistic than his fellow heroes and works tirelessly to fulfill his duty – even though he would “rather be a lower-ranking hero” so he can slack off. he’s so complex and has a lot of contradictions in his personality, but that’s how real people are. and that’s why he’s so relatable.

❥ scorpio moon: not really interested in surface-level relationships. desires long-lasting and deep connection. potentially very secretive about their feelings even though they are intensely emotional. creative. mysterious. captivating. ambitious. empathetic – or at least aware of the vibes around them. a bit manipulative at times. the moon is in its fall here.

hawks is well-liked as a pro-hero – sure. but i don’t see him getting very close to anyone, really. he doesn’t seem interested in the relationships he has with other pros or any of his surface-level acquaintances. he’s definitely secretive, mysterious, captivating, aware of the vibes around him, and can be manipulative – all of these are PERFECT examples of why he turned spy. his creativity is always on display when he uses his quirk. he uses it in the most unexpected ways! he also uses it to retain his placid appearance – even while he’s chasing down villains with his feathers. this mirrors the way scorpios tend to maintain a placid surface while their emotions might be raging underneath.

i think hawks’s leo rising is a really prominent placement for him. whatever he wants to project to the public, he does. leos tend to be a bit larger-than-life, and this checks out here. he also has SUPER dramatic facial expressions, especially in the manga. he’s able to sense vibrations through his individual feathers, making him even more body-conscious than most other heroes. denki and bakugou both have this placement as well.

his lack of professionalism is probably because of his leo rising and definitely that sagittarius venus. at the same time, his lack of professionalism isn’t perceived negatively – it almost works in his favor regarding his career. it’s communicated in a way that people still feel his sense of responsibility. hawks is super honest and blunt, often to the point of being rude. i do think his libra moon tempers his communication a bit, making it more palatable than it would be otherwise.

from his wiki: hawks's given name is composed of the kanji for "disclose, open, say" (啓 kei) and "enlightenment, understanding" (悟 go). even his name outlines his honesty. he often seems restless – like he feels caged in – by the pro-hero framework. he says that he wishes he wasn’t so popular because it would give him more freedom. his impatience plays into how quick he is with literally everything. he’s used to getting things – and getting them fast – which (as a Sagittarius Bitch™️ myself) sounds about right for this placement.

i said this earlier, but he is sooooo complex – full of contradictions. and that’s really why i love him. two things can be true at the same time. and he’s proof! his ability to articulate information is really highlighted when he gives endeavor information through the meta liberation book that he highlighted. he’s using his judgement – knowing that he shouldn’t be outright with the info. but still communicates it in an effective way. which also ties into his problem solving and how detail-oriented he can be when he wants to be.

❥ cancer uranus: creativity. a fresh perspective. eccentric. intuitive. aspires to understand life itself. homebody. family-oriented even though he has family issues. strong reactions. patriotic. frees other generations from limiting traditions. sometimes takes time away to refresh.

since he’s slightly older than the student-age characters and younger than most pro-heroes, hawks has one different generational planet from the younger characters. this changes his general outlook on life a bit. where the younger characters deal with more introspection and “coming into themselves,” hawks deals with family issues and his ideals. he’s a fresh perspective and a bit unconventional in comparison to other pros. i would definitely say he’s a bit eccentric. also (tw here for family issues) his backstory with his parents is crazy sad. he wants to be family-oriented but his parents were so shitty to him that he has to wrestle with it. and this manifests in the way he wants to give the public the security that he didn’t have as a child. i touched on his dramatic facial expressions earlier, but this probably plays a part in them too – he has strong reactions to situations. he’s able to easily control his emotions, but those gut feelings are there. he’s patriotic in a...... weird way. he wants to give security to the public even while projecting his “i-don’t-give-a-shit” image, which – again – breaks the mold a little as far as limiting traditions. he refreshes himself with alone time – i can kind of see this when he’s spying. he takes a step back from what he’s used to and looks at it through another lens.

i think hawks’s placements interact really well with one another. with all his capricorn placements, i’m surprised he’s not more straight-laced – but he has some sagittarius and gemini energy that definitely give him the desire to be the exact opposite of that. he wants freedom in spite of his high achievement. he wants both things. and i don’t blame him. and what is gemini energy if not duality? i was initially surprised at how many earth placements he had, but after looking more into him, it clicked for me. he stays grounded in situations that someone with different placements might not. too much air and he might lose himself. too much fire and he might get carried away and combative. too much water and he might have a bit of an internal conflict. i really think his chart is spot-on. there’s nothing in here that i really disagree with. Wirbel “Just a little? I’m surprised. I thought one of Himmel’s party members would be…”

フリーレン「ヒンメルの仲間なら何？」

Frieren “Would be what?”

フリーレン「私のほうこそ意外だったかな。第一次試験でフェルン達を殺そうとしたんでしょ。フェルン愚痴ってたよ。犬とか蹴っ飛ばしてそうな奴だって。」

Furīren “Watashino hokoso igai datta kana. Dai-ichiji-shikende Ferun-tachio korosoto shitan-desho. Ferun guchittetayo. Inu-toka kettobashite-sona yatsu datte.”

Frieren “If anything, you surprised me. You tried to kill Fern’s party during the first test, didn’t you? Fern complained to me about it. She said you seemed like someone who’d kick a dog out of the way.”

Wirbel “I get that a lot. All I did was threaten them.”

Wirbel “My hometown is on the northern frontier. There are countless stories about Himmel the Hero there.”

ヴィアベル「千鏡の塔の攻略。七崩賢・不死なるベーゼや、皇獄竜との戦い。ガキの頃の俺は、そんな冒険譚が大好きだった。でも村のジジババ共は、そんな話滅多にしやがらねぇ。」

ヴィアベル「やれ村を襲った魔物を退治しただの。やれ商人の護衛をしただの。酷いもんだと単なる荷物運びまであった。全然大したことじゃねえ。つまんねえ話だ。そう思ったよ。なのに村のジジババは心底嬉しそうに、口を揃えてそんな話をするんだ。」

Wirbel “They’d talk about how he defeated the monsters that attacked the village, or how he guarded some merchant, or even how he just helped carry stuff like a porter. They were hardly impressive. Just a bunch of boring stories. That’s what I thought, anyway. But you could tell how happy the village elders were when they told those stories.”

ヴィアベル「勇者ヒンメルが死んで、魔族の残党が暴れ始めてから、よーくわかったよ。確かに千鏡の塔もベーゼも皇獄竜も、魔王すら、俺の村には関係ねぇわな。皆、日々の生活を守るので手一杯だ。」

ヴィアベル「きっと勇者ヒンメルが俺の村に来なかったら、世界が平和になっても、そこに俺の村は無かったんだろうな。」

Wirbel “If Himmel the Hero hadn’t come to my village, then I doubt it’d still be there, whether he saved the world or not.”

Frieren “I see. What are you trying to say?”

ヴィアベル「俺をここまで連れてきたのは、勇者ヒンメルのくだらない冒険譚だ。俺が言いたいのはそれだけだ。」

Wirbel “Those stories of Himmel’s less exciting adventures were what guided me here. That’s all I’m trying to say.”

ヴィアベル「少し長話が過ぎたな。結局あいつらと一緒に帰ることになっちまった。フリーレン。出会いは大切にしろよ。今生の別れってのは何も死別だけじゃない。いや、百も承知か。」

フリーレン「それだと私だけこっちに残っちゃうでしょ。」

Frieren “Then I’d be left all alone on this side.”

アイゼン「ヒンメル。俺たちは一刻も早く魔王を倒さねばならん。こんな小さな人助けになんの意味がある？」

Aizen “Hinmeru. Ore-tachiwa ikkokumo hayaku Mao’o taosaneba naran. Konna chiisana hito-dasukeni nanno imiga aru?”

Eisen “Himmel, we need to defeat the Demon King as soon as possible. What point is there in helping people in these insignificant ways?”

ヒンメル「確かに小さな人助けだ。きっとこんなことをしたって世界は変わらない。でも僕は、目の前で困っている人を見捨てるつもりはないよ。」

Fern “What exactly did she do to deserve this?”

フリーレン「仕方がないよ、ゼーリエの機嫌を損ねてしまったからね。まったく子供みたいな人だよね。まあ私も来たくて来たわけじゃないし。外で待っているね。」

フリーレン「やっぱり見えているね。私の魔力の揺らぎが。とんでもない手練れだ。平和な時代には似つかわしくないね。」

Frieren “You can see the fluctuations in my mana, can’t you? You’re incredibly skilled. This peaceful era doesn’t suit you.”

レルネン「そうですね。私は戦いしか知らない時代遅れの魔法使いです。ゼーリエ様にもよく言われます。魔王軍との戦火の時代に生まれていれば、名立たる英雄達と共に歴史にその名を残したであろうと。」

Lernen “You’re right. I am an old-fashioned mage who only knows battle. Ms.Serie often says the same thing. If I’d been born during the era in which we fought the Demon King’s forces, I would’ve gone down in history alongside the other famous heroes.”

Frieren “I see. So what do you want from me?”

レルネン「ゼーリエ様の弟子の中で、歴史に名を残したのは、最早おとぎ話となった大魔法使いフランメのみ。私が老いて死ねば、あの方が生きた証がまた一つ消えることになります。私はあの方を未来で一人孤独にさせたくないのです。たとえそれが、伝説の魔法使いフリーレン様を討ち取ったという悪名であろうとも。」

Lernen “I request a duel, Ms.Frieren.”

フリーレン「手合わせはしないよ。時間の無駄だ。まったく。戦いしか知らない魔法使いは不器用な連中が多いんだから。歴史に名を残す必要なんてないよ。ゼーリエは、ちゃんと覚えている。」

ゼーリエ「正直フランメは失敗作だった。あれほどの才を持ちながら、私ほどの高みへは辿り着けなかった。その後も沢山の弟子を取ったよ。どれも私の足元にも及ばないまま、ほとんどが先立った。」

The self-appointed big brother of the Jade Owls, Derrick is a Lumokinesis User who is the teacher of Russell and Zia. Thrown into things beyond her control, he is captured by The Jithran Guards and put into a prison ship alongside his students, Russell and Zia. He is then whisked away in a into a jail break committed by several prisoners who steal the ship for their own. Now wanted for Barratry and associating with an Ergokinetic user, Derrick is now a member of the Jade Owls. A rag-tag gang of wanted criminal mercenaries who travel throughout Otacaia by sea and air, looking for missions and avoiding the authorities. Derrick in addition acts as an advisor to the leadership of the Jade Owls (i.e. Haerile, Miri, and Suri).

28. what do they tell people they want? what do they actually want?

break has his desires and wants, but i don't think he even knows what those are right now. and if he did, he wouldn't be honest about them. while he doesn't directly lie to people, he'll simply not answer if you ask him something he does not want to answer. he'll say so, as well, alongside providing a rather surface-level answer. (think along the lines of, "oh, but that's really none of your business, is it? i'd very much love some candy right now, if you ought to know.")

he expressed his very first genuine want in the last moments of the manga, which was to stay with his family. and now he's here, apart from them. so, what to want, now? he's using his promise to shelly as orientation, which was to keep fighting as long as he still has those people to live for. he would love to go back home, but at the same time, he's not sure if being here is punishment for his crimes. so he's in a bit of a frozen state, where he doesn't dare to want just yet, unsure of his own position and feelings.

none of which he's going to admit anytime soon.

52. do they act on their immediate emotions, or do they wait for the facts before acting?

↑ big fan of waiting to gather facts before acting, though he knows that's not always possible. occasionally having to trust your gut is part of life. if he got to pick, it's important for him to have as much information as possible before he acts. there's two very nice contrasting scenes in the manga to showcase this: sharon getting kidnapped, and reim getting killed. while he stays relatively calm throughout sharon's kidnapping, because of both the information he already had and the information he acquired after her kidnapping, reim's death has him abandon his plans entirely, purely because of his emotional response to that loss. he ends up killing potential allies that he's been working towards teaming up with.

break will stay calm if he has reason to do so. he's quite calculated, and knows when he's acting on emotions, for which he needs a good enough justification. (later on, when sharon gets hurt because of him, he snaps a bit, as well, using that anger to direct it at people he was already going to kill, anyways.)

54. what’s their instinct in a fight / flight / freeze / fawn situation?

fight fight fight fight. break is a pretty aggressive guy if he has to be, especially in survival situations. he gets angry. mostly at himself, if he's the one getting bested, but that anger is channeled into his fighting. he also just likes fighting. it's the one thing he'll admit he's pretty good at, taking pride in his skill and being insulted if other people don't recognize it once the jig is up and he stops acting like a clown for the moment.

the fact that people at his workplace are collectively terrified of him and his skills with the sword says enough about that tbh. this even extends to people being terrified of his friends, because how could you ever be friends with the hatter through any other means than being more powerful than him?

So

Astrology, right?

Well I enjoy drawing. I have 2 main OC characters that I've been making a comic/manga on right? Wahoo I love em' so much

Well one thing is obvious, anything you create at a certain time and day will have those characteristic in their natal chart. Doesn't matter if it's an event, person, animal, significant object etc. So I wasn't surprised when I saw everything correlating to how I actually made their characters.

But then I was like "oml what if they were real peeps??? How would we all act to each other?" This is where synastry comes in and my unending curiosity. And when I tell you our NN's were perfectly conjunct, some angles sitting next to each other with a cup of tea and we had many soulmate/soulfamily aspects (it makes sense because I made the characters myself. So it's kinda like a rooted creation per say? Idk how to describe it but obviously since I'm working with the characters they had very 'destined' aspects with my natal. (Think about your best friends synastry charts or you with your families)

Another thing is, these 2 characters were main characters. It was a friendly comedy I decided to make. They had many fame degrees all over their charts 😂😂 The MAIN main one had many 28 degrees and some leo ones. The 2nd main character had many leo degrees with one or two 28 degrees

One of the characters was a girl with a lot of mischevious qualities. She's talkative and often shows a lot of emotion (sometimes in exaggerated ways too 😂) she had a gemini moon conjunct MC 😎 not to forget her action oriented qualities (she also has an aries sun) she comes off as rebellious at times and can have some more 'keep it real' vibes (she has lilith in the 10th which went with this)

My other character was a man who was more traditional. If it was an anime he'd be tsundere honestly. Has more refined tastes. Sophisticated and hardworking. Man had saturn in his 1st (and other placements but it's a long list) that goes with this. He's also quite distant yet friendly (he does get cold if annoyed though obv) // has aquarius rising. Has a RBF too (yes he's the killjoy in the story I think it's clear now)
