Fieldwork here on Rota is well underway, with about half of our mist-netting lanes and trails marked and prepped for next month's bird banding. But along the way, we find all kinds of incredible landscapes and hidden treasures.

Top left: A WWII Japanese artillery gun sunk into a manmade cave in a limestone wall. The old gun is being overtaken by the jungle and has ferns and moss growing all over the barrel.

Top right: An old wrecked boat inside the lagoon on Rota's northwestern shore, with brilliant blue sky above and turquoise water below.

Bottom left: Guam Coenogyne, a rare endangered orchid found only on Rota and Guam. This white flower with a red center emerges from a swirl of large bulbs with leaves that cling to the bark of a mossy tree.

Bottom right: An unbroken green glass bottle that originally held soy sauce, from sometime in the 1920s-40s when Rota was a Japanese colony.

I've been doing conference then vacation travel for two weeks at this point, but don't worry, I've found four libraries so far.

hii!! loved your botanical garden one-shot. had me thinking about one i went to over the summer in new mexico that had a whole section dedicated to BUGS! does ronnie like bugs too? i feel like it's hard to like plants without seeing a few creepy crawlers here and there. how would she react to an exhibit solely based on them?!

Ronnie would love an exhibit dedicated to bugs! She would be fascinated by how ant colonies work or how centipedes move and even finds spiderwebs covered in dew to be very pretty. She likes looking at them and thinks they're cool, but if someone ever asked her if she wanted to pick one up, her answer would be no. And that even extends to asking her dad to take care of any bugs that got into her room, but only the crawly kind. She won't let her dad kill them like he wants to, of course.

As long as a bug doesn't touch her, she'll sit and watch them crawl around (unless they're on her bed.) Of course, the one exception is cockroaches.

She's not exactly scared of bugs, but it feels way too weird whenever an ant crawls on her leg or a mosquito lands on her arm. Like the goosebumps feeling, but in a bad way. At least she's not scared of them as a teenager. She was probably afraid of them as a little kid, though.

Bonus: If I had to pinpoint her favorite bug, it would either be a ladybug or moth and not like a common house moth but perhaps a luna moth

Bonus bonus: She would definitely ask the guys if they would still be friends with her if she was a worm
