Daphne Oram’s Oramics system used hand drawn 35mm film strips to generate sound

For a long period, the results of Oram's experimental tape recordings were of little interest to the BBC. However, in 1957, Oram was commissioned to score the radio drama Amphytryon 38; using a single sine wave oscillator, a collection of homemade filters, and – of course – a series of tape recorders Oram created the BBC's first entirely synthetic score. Impressed with the results, the BBC eventually set up a committee to look into "Electrophonic Effects," which resulted in Oram being teamed up with another recording engineer, Desmond Briscoe, to launch the BBC's Radiophonic Workshop in 1958. Housed in a spare room and stocked with some out-of-date equipment, the BBC wanted the workshop to serve as a sound-effects and jingle factory, but Oram saw things differently, hoping to develop the Workshop into an essential hub for experimental audio projects and the production of ambitious electro-acoustic works. After less than a year, Oram realized her vision would not win out over the BBC's and so she left the Workshop to found her own Oramics Studios for Electronic Composition in a converted oast house in Kent (where she would continue to compose boundary-pushing work and eventually develop the process of Oramics, a means of creating sounds using hand-drawn 35mm film strips that were then read by her own specially-constructed machine).

It was about a 4 hour drive and you were stuck and the Varsity bus. You were hoping to sit in the front with the driver to avoid any farts or unnecessary wedgies or wet willies but it turned out that Coach Oram was the bus driver. You know if you sat by him he’d shove you under his asscrack for the whole ride. You started walking up the stairs right behind Louis W. He was know for being extremely gassy. This time was different as he was walking in front of you he let out a loud rip but it was more than a rip. As the bus ride went on you thought maybe nothing would happen, maybe the jocks would just leave you alone.

It was about 2 hours into the bus ride and Cade Williams came up to you and dragged you to the back of the bus. “I gotta shit so bad little faggot”! “And your gonna smell and watch me”

Maybe it was because it was shit. The bus soddenly started to fill up with the rotten stench of shit and farts. Every football player was holding there stomache whilst it was gurgling. Every football player was splattering hot farts out of there assholes. Both of the Oram boys were in hysterics, they loved bathroom humor and to be trapped in a shit smelling bus was just the thing to make them laugh. It only got worse from there. Each player brought a giant can of expired chilli with them and as soon as the stank left there ass they made sure to fuel up for more. Number 54 Casey Moddrell was the biggest player on the bus. He took up one seat and ate 5 cans of beans to himself. He and his buddies made there way through the shit smelling hallway and went to your seat. What they did next was unbelievable. Daniel Held open your mouth really wide. You started squirming and whining and eventually your dick got super hard. Konner kept breathing in air through his mouth and Belching it in your face, it was so gross that you even had food particles in your face. Eddie came up next and started to make your situation worse. He spat on his hand and started stroking your cock. It enlarged so much that you didn’t know how much more you could handle. The kept stroking and spitting and burping and and farting and you were squirming around, so confused and aroused. Now was the big moment. Casey pulled his shit stained football pants down and placed his asshole over your mouth. Now that your lips were right against his hole he could do his worst.

It was so bad but so good that you just let go and came everywhere. Every jock on that bus was soaked in an ungodly amount of sweat. But that didn’t stop Casey. He continued to groan as he farted down your throat. Eventually he ran dry and sealed the deal with some powerful belches. “GOD DAMN IM A SMELLY BASTARD”!! He was so proud of his accomplishment. Your body had changed drastically as well. All of the gas sat in your stomach just waiting to be released, it was the worst feeling. All you could remember was feeling nauseous, sticky and bloated. You’re gut was probably bigger than a 45 year old dads beer gut. Over this course of time you had been destroyed by the football team and the coaches couldn’t even give a fuck. For all you know they probably added to the stench themselves too. They are as equally alpha and disgusting as the team. It was halfway through the ride to the game and we stopped for an all paid for all you can eat buffet. You could already tell this wasn’t going to be good. On your way out of the bus Coach Oram stopped you.

“What the hell happened to you faggot”?

At that moment you could feel something unsettled in your stomach things weren’t feeling quite right. Jérôme Noetinger — Sur quelques mondes étranges (Gagarin)

Sur quelques mondes étranges by Jérôme Noetinger

With Sur quelques mondes étranges, Gagarin Records in Hamburg bring us a new — and rare — solo release from French improviser and composer Jérôme Noetinger. Though an influential and widely respected figure on the European experimental music scene for over thirty years, Noetinger's work might be less known to listeners outside of Europe. This solo release may help in exposing Noetinger's music to a wider listening audience.

Realized in a Hamburg studio over three days in 2019, Sur quelques mondes étranges (loosely translated to On Some Strange Worlds) offers a glimpse into Noetinger's practice, existing primarily in a realm of looping sonic textures that might rather elicit connotations of a sculptor chiseling away at their material than a person working with the abstract notions of sound. Comprised of two sides of shorter tracks, one side-length 18-minute piece and one side of 21-second lock grooves, the end effect of Sur quelques mondes étranges feels more like a smorgasbord of what Noetinger is capable of than a definitive statement of his musical priorities.

This might have to do with the fact that more often than not Noetinger works within the framework of improvisational collaborations. On Sur quelques mondes étranges we find him alone in the studio traversing various predetermined structures and sound strategies. Using reel-to-reel tape machines, radios, sundry electronic devices and prerecorded material, Noetinger's process might involve starting a piece with a tape loop or building the atmosphere of his improvisation from a more specific sound object. He does this in the piece Steinmeck, which revolves around the cryptic incantation of that word. In each piece, the overriding density of the music pulls the listener in, challenging them to find their way through the many layers of sound.

To get a better idea of the prevailing atmosphere on Sur quelques mondes étranges, imagine Daphne Oram with a bad headache at the BBC Radiophonic Workshop composing soundtracks for a collection of J. G. Ballard short stories. Initially recorded only a few months before the onset of the Covid pandemic, the tracks on Sur quelques mondes étranges, with titles like Tonalités cosmiques pour anorexie mentale (Cosmic Tones for Anorexia Nervosa), Assault, Histoire d'un conflit (History of a Conflict) and Le bouffon moderne (The Modern Jester), work like harbingers of the dystopia to come. Recorded without any overdubs through room microphones and performed over tube-powered speakers, the material's analog tonal quality achieves a very live and spontaneous feel, giving us the sense of being right in the room with Noetinger as he performs.

Though the shorter pieces over the first two sides might provide a useful overview for people who aren't yet familiar with Noetinger's work, they don't really do justice to his improvisational process — something that needs more time to develop and unfold. As a result, these pieces often seem truncated or at the very least severed from what might have been more interesting long-form excursions. Thus, one is left with a mildly exasperated sense of wanting to hear more development than afforded by the confines of these relatively brief tracks.

Side C's excellent 18-minute Eine andere magische Stadt (Another Magic City) goes some way in abating this sense of dissatisfaction — but it also leaves one longing for more pieces of this duration. As it is exactly in this long-form context that Noetinger's work really shines, allowing one to get a better sense of how he moves through the accretion and dissolution of his material. And in this sense, Side D's collection of lock grooves (Zwölf Stationen — Twelve Stations ) seems like a frustratingly poor use of vinyl real estate. Another full-side piece like Eine andere magische Stadt would have certainly been more welcome than these snippets, which, quite frankly, seem more like an excuse to fill an empty side of vinyl than anything else.

In a sense, Sur quelques mondes étranges puts the cart before the proverbial horse, giving us many short answers but not providing a space for us to ask the deeper questions required to navigate the mystery of Noetinger's work.

Boomkat Product Review: Very rare venture from Swedish a/v master Kent Tankred, deploying his “concresizer” image/sound mangler in properly free adventures between absorbing noise textures and expressive organ and rhythm excursions - RIYL Pan Sonic, NYZ, CC Hennix, Russell Haswell, Daphne Oram. EMS graduate of the ‘70s, key member of The Freq_Out Orchestra and half of The Sons of God with Leif Elggren; Kent Tankred’s reputation in the Swedish underground is inversely proportionate to his sparse handful of works, best highlighted in 1995’s ‘Ordinary Things’ for Flykingen Records. ‘There Is Nothing To Attain’ is his first new release since 2010’s CDr of the same name, and supplies a 2 hour canvas ideal for exploring his wildly variegated sprawl of post-human styles, where he clearly relishes the possibility of his machines to make freaky as fuck, outlandish electronic sounds that exist in the space between music and non-music. He’s been at this since the early ‘70s and by this point you can trust that Tankred knows what he’s up to, or, then again, maybe doesn’t - as his work is full of an intuitive, inexplicable vitality that feels as ancient and primitive, as it does advanced. Tankred’s music isn't for everyone, but for those who like to be challenged and poked, it's a vital trip. Tankred doesn't shy on the track lengths either, with most running into ten+ minutes, variously doing JCB-scale dentistry with ‘Kökkenmödding 1’ and sharply contrasting with the Hennix-meets-NYZ-alike organ vamps of ‘PSR-266’, but also reserving the right to go stringently minimal on the absorbing tracts of ‘Pulsar’ and ‘There Is Nothing To Attain 2’. His rhythmic/percussive provilicites come to life in ‘Dialog’ and there’s an unmistakeable sort of far northerly dread scope to the seething drone of ‘Obsession 2’ and to-the-bone abstraction of ‘Pots’ that surely resonates with Pan Sonic, primed for those who really like to get their ear’s teef into it and swill it around. Sister with transistor : Telling the story of the unsung heroines of electronic music

Have you ever heard about the pioneers of electronic music? Have you ever heard those incredible stories?

Stories like the one about Clara Rockmore, who helped refine the conception of the theremin, created in the 1920s by a Russian physicist. A curious electronic instrument that could be played without any physical contact.

The story of Daphne Oram, hired as an engineer at the BBC studios in the 1940s, who began recording and manipulating sounds on magnetic tape after work.

Even Delia Derbyshire, who created sounds for nearly 200 BBC programmes and the iconic theme music for the science fiction series Doctor Who, which began in 1963.

Or Laurie Spiegel, a composer trained at Juilliard, who worked as a researcher at Bell Labs in the 1970s, working on sound variations. Whose work caught the attention of NASA in 1977, and whose musical interpretation was included in the disk sent into space to represent all of humanity.

If you haven't heard of them, you should watch the film Sister with transistor. If you know these stories, you should still watch this documentary, for its powerful storytelling and its powerful montage of archive.

In February 2021, music lovers and cinephiles were able to discover this documentary at the 6th edition of FAME, the international festival of films on music, organised by the Gaité Lyrique in Paris. The film won the student jury prize and special mention from the jury.

With Sisters with Transistor, the filmmaker and artist Lisa Rovner makes a powerful and sharp documentary. She shows portraits one after the other and reveals to her viewers personalities and stories that are both discreet and eccentric but above all unknown. She rehabilitates the history of the pioneers of electronic music.

Clara Rockmore, Delia Derbyshire, Bebe Barron, Eliane Radigue, Daphne Oran, Suzanne Ciani, Laurie Spiegel, Pauline Oliveros, Maryanne Amacher and Wendy Carlos. These names may not be familiar to everyone, but behind them are women who have revolutionized electronic music.

« We women were especially drawn to electronic music when the possibility of a woman composing was in itself controversial. Electronics let us make music that could be heard by others without having to be taken seriously by the male dominated Establishment” says Laurie Spiegel, one of these pioneers.

With the help of synthesizers and oscillators, they have, as true explorers, since the 1940s, deconstructed the barriers of musical research. The film depicts the relationship between women and men in the musical universe, the relationship with the codes of the music industry from the 1950s to the 1980s, as well as the reluctance to include electronic experimentation and sound creation in the history of music. The film then mentions the social, political and cultural contexts of the 20th century.

The film traces these stories through testimonies and incredible archive images. It aims to make known the history of these women who often worked in the shadows, but who are nevertheless at the origin of inventions and sound creations from which we have inherited. They have largely contributed to redefining the boundaries of music. Lisa Rovner talks about these women who have created bridges between academic composition, experimental scene, film, television and advertising, using these "machines of the future" such as synthesizers, oscillators, filters and sequencers.

Sister with transistor is an inspiring film, a real commitment. It shows a quality of archival footage. The film editing is poetry : both musically and visually. And in my opinion, it is an important film for the electronic music history.

Women in Electronic Music: Daphne Oram

Daphne Oram (1925 - 2003)

Daphne Oram began her musical life by playing the piano and organ. She worked at BBC as a studio engineer. Oram was the first woman to set up a personal electronic studio. She was also the first woman to design and create an electronic musical instrument.

Oram composed the first piece of music that combined acoustic orchestration with live electronic manipulation. It was an orchestral work called “Still Point.”

Daphne Oram created her own electronic composition technique known as “Oramics.” Drawings etched into film strips are read by the machine and converted into sounds. This was an innovative creation in the music production world, as it allowed for more flexibility and control over certain parameters of the sound.

Cosmic Neighbourhood - Library Vol 1 - keeping the Hauntology flame alight (Kit Records)

Adam Higton presents his first collection of library music. Encompassing comic strips, collage and sound art, York-based illustrator and musician Adam Higton's work documents the daily goings-on of the forest folk within the realm of the Cosmic Neighbourhood. In classic Higton style, this new 10" sees songs acting in response to a series of paper-and-scissors compositions. Sonically, these recordings straddle new and old, taking modular electronics, flutes, bells and softly pattering drum machines, before colouring them all with the amber glow of some forgotten, psychedelic kids' TV programme. Higton's benign toots and echoing jingles bring to mind Daphne Oram's early delay experiments or the meandering playfulness of Tom Cameron. Radiophonic and time-worn, it still somehow sounds like the future.
