Wow. I can't believe the words coming out of my opponent's mouth. The concept that all Weird Al does is "make existing songs about food" is just such outdated, twentieth century thinking. Do we want a President who discounts the "style" parodies? America does not need a leader who doesn't share their enthusiasm for the polka medleys, or their excitement that one of the guest animators on Yankovic's latest polka opus crafted the "Albuquerque" video from Newgrounds

[F4F] Stage Fright Comfort from Your Charming Ringleader
Tumblr media
Introducing, Bernadette Popovski! This woman runs the biggest covert risk known to man.
She is the Ringleader of Popovski's Circus of Miracles and Delights (that's the full name because she's extra like that). Her circus hosts many talented empowered folk showing off their powers, all under the guise of mere circus tricks. The fire eater is a fire elemental, the lion tamer is a telepath and a shifter, the trapeze artist is an air elemental, ect.
Thus the circus is able to maintain covert, even though its been heavily investigated by DUMP. Hell, the only person to ever get close to busting Popovski was some rookie stealth investigator, but even they couldn't make anything stick.
The circus even offers discounts and private seating for daemons who want to feed on the audience's emotions.
Her listener is a Sonal Energetic, whom Bernadette always refers to as her Magnum Opus. After hearing the listener's voice even once, she knew she had to have her in the circus. It took a month or so of continuously asking, some would say begging, but eventually the listener agreed.
All the world's a stage, and Bernadette was made to shine, and drag those bright enough into the spotlight with her. Kicking and screaming.

Archmage Rolan Rebuilds Tower, Vows Service to City of Baldur’s Gate
Featured Guest Article by Calia Steelheart
All will remember that fateful day on which the towering mage’s keep fell within our brave walls, formerly owned by one curiously absent Ramazith, on the very spot where we have watched a new tower rise from the ashes of this great city. Readers may recall our very own Baldur’s Mouth story that first detailed the young prodigious Archmage’s ousting of the previous owner of Sorcerous Sundries, and in this featured article we explore his historic rise and the soon-to-be public grand opening of Rolan’s Tower.
Having survived the Descent of Elturel and journeyed to a new start in Baldur’s Gate, the Archwizard Rolan exemplifies the determination and perseverance of our great city, forsaking the previous tower to join the brave adventurers in their climactic fight on the historic day that it fell. One source close to the wizard who wished to remain anonymous stated “Credit where it’s due – he’s certainly come a long way. Haven’t we all, darling?”. Another source declined to provide an official comment, however, was overheard making the following utterance in private communication in reference to the battle for Baldur’s Gate, paraphrased for this publication, “he proved capable when it mattered most, it has been an honour to [fight against] those who threaten my kin alongside him.”
Whilst maintaining a famous humility despite his considerable achievements on behalf of the city thus far, Rolan has demonstrated exceptional talent as a wizardly scholar, which he intends to put to use for the good of the citizens of Baldur’s Gate. Archmage Gale Dekarios of Waterdeep provided an exclusive interview, sharing his insights on our own city’s Archmage’s capabilities. “You may imagine that wizards are bound to recapitulate the same spells ad infinitum – but quite the opposite. Unique is his ability to craft his own path through the Weave, to dance through it as though hearing a bright new melody where the rest of us hum the same tired tune. Now, his signature magnum opus, as it were, is of course the mighty wave of thunder, but nary has there been a more studious disciple of the arcane arts, and none more committed to distributing the abundance of his intellect. That is not to discount the incomparable deeds of other wizards of legendary note of course, amongst which I fancy I also feature.” Due to limitations of space permitted for print of this article, the remainder of Dekarios’s words will be printed in the next issue of Baldur’s Mouth.
With the ongoing construction and anticipated reopening of his Tower, Rolan himself has provided the following words to all who find themselves in the city, both local and newcomer alike, “I am thankful for all who have come together to assist in rebuilding the tower in my name. I am committed to being the wizard that the people of this city deserve and will not hide behind illusions or cheap tricks. Baldur’s Gate has welcomed me, and my family, and I intend to welcome it back. Once my doors are open, you will find the tower a place of learning for all, and one to be boasted along the Sword Coast, I assure you.”
Wyll Ravengard, son of the Grand Duke Ulder Ravengard, speaks highly of Archmage Rolan, stating “There is no doubt in my mind or in my heart that he will make good on his promises to the city. Much can be said ill of his predecessor, but I have scarcely met another so dedicated to their craft or their loved ones as the new owner of the tower. Rolan the Steel-Hearted has chosen to make Baldur’s Gate his home, and honours us with his exceptional gifts, it is our duty to receive and support all who seek to share the wealth of their talents within our walls.” Another dedicated citizen of Baldur’s Gate put it thusly, “Roly’s a good guy, if the city doesn’t support him, it’s their [expletive] loss.”
In addition to governmental officials and hard-working citizens, several businesses organizations and have already expressed support for the Archmage’s endeavors, including the local chapter of the Society of Brilliance. A spokesperson for the Society provided the following statement: “As scholars, we are committed to advancing understanding and promoting acceptance and cooperation within academic spaces. We look forward to continuing our partnership with Rolan and sharing our resources for the benefit of all who call Faerûn home.” A local blacksmith has also been working closely with the wizard in the reconstruction of the tower.
Visit Forge of the Nine in the Lower City for all your smithing needs!
Much like his devotion to Baldur’s Gate, to those who know him personally it comes as no surprise that Archwizard Rolan is deeply devoted to family. His sister and brother demonstrate superior talent in their own right and were instrumental in recent victories in the city and beyond. In addition, sources can confirm that they are both skilled in comedic verse and in possession of the most charming of manners and most captivating of features. Though it cannot be verified, the wizard is said to have described them as ‘exemplary role-models of the highest wisdom and judgement, with whom I never disagree, and whose presence causes me such joy that I might weep nightly’.
Those who would seek to share in the Archmage’s vast intellectual fortune and always delightful company will be disappointed to learn that his heart has already been spoken for. Making time in their busy schedule, Tav themselves sat down with these authors to share their thoughts on the man who captivated them so…
[Here the paper is ripped, where someone has carefully removed the final quote of the article.]
What would be the quote provided by your Tav?

tfw shower thoughts happen during services
I accidentally wrote an entire dvar Torah during shul yesterday and the only appropriate place I could think of to share was here, on Tumblr, so here I've come to share it.
There is no one type of Jew. In fact if anyone tells you there is you can immediately discount whatever they're saying, because they've already proven their ignorance. We can't even agree on how to categorize and group ourselves; the only common denominator among Jews is we worship the One G-d, Unique in His Oneness. Everything else depends on circumstances.
There's a common Jewish joke to this effect: "Two Jews, three opinions." I rather think our history of debate is one of our great strengths - it forms the basis of our quintessential and almost instantly recognizable learning style. We sit in pairs or groups with a holy book on the table between us and read it aloud... And we argue over what exactly, precisely, the author meant. What did he mean by this word, this phrase, this parallel structure, this reference? What can we learn from the text to apply to our daily lives?
Jewish study halls are loud.
And believe me, they're not necessarily polite, either. Some full-time scholars treat arguing like a beloved hobby. The magnum opus of the Jewish academic world, the Talmud, contains the collected opinions of the greatest ancient sages, written down when the chain of oral transmission was threatened. To our great fortune, they also preserved the lively discussion (source) and passionate name-calling that came with it: "empty-headed", "scatterbrained", even "a first-born son of Satan" come up more than once. (Source) They insulted each other, each other's wives, each other's entire generations to prove a point.
So how do we resolve these conflicts? How does the study hall ring in harmony, rather than strife?
The answer lies in another Jewish maxim (we love our proverbs):
שבעים פנים לתורה / Shiv'im panim la-Torah. / There are seventy faces to the Torah.
Biblical context: The Torah refers to 70 languages, 70 nations, and means "all the people in the world." So when we say there are 70 faces to the Torah, we leapfrog off that concept and say "The Torah encompasses all possible permutations and interpretations in the world." (Recall the scene in Fiddler on the Roof where someone says, "They can't both be right!" and Tevye responds, "You know, you're also right..." Source.)
The Talmud is a unified text because the sages recorded in it were debating toward a common goal. Their opinions may have been equally valid (peep the story of Rav Eliezer vs the majority, source), but at the end of the day they agreed on a deciding factor and made a final decision. The study hall rings in harmony because we argue and debate not toward a common goal but for a common purpose: to increase our knowledge and understanding, and to deepen our love and relationship with G-d. With this as our guiding principle, differences of individual interpretation melt under the overriding truth that all are facets of G-d's World.
How does this apply to us? Let me make this very, very Jewish and end with a parable.
So, nu, you're sitting in the study hall and your partner has just spent the last twenty minutes trying to explain a fakakta idea and you KNOW he's meshugana but you don't have time to reason with him because the rabbi just hammered on his desk to call for the afternoon prayer service. You take a deep breath and remember - shivim panim laTorah. He can keep his ideas, and maybe next time it'll be your turn to rant, because the Word of G-d is infinite and encompasses all interpretations.
And another:
You stand with the prayerbook in your hands and stare at the paragraphs written by sages hundreds and thousands of years ago and you struggle to relate to the words, even though your teachers and rabbis have lectured about how meaningful they are over and over again. You take a deep breath and remember - shivim panim laTorah. These words were codified with a particular set of meanings in mind, but you have a unique relationship with G-d. You can use these words OR their original intention to inspire your own, private prayer, and it is equally valid. Because the Word of G-d is infinite, and encompasses all possible permutations of prayer.
70 whole and unique faces to the Word of G-d.
Whether you're in the midst of an emotional crisis, a spiritual crisis, an existential crisis, or a motivational crisis, may each of us merit to see the conflict we are feeling, and find a new face to study instead.

4, 6, and 7!
For this ask game @nocturnalfandomartist Hi Nocturne! Thank you for the ask! :D This is very long, hopefully you don't mind :) 4. Do you have beta? How important is it to the process? As a general rule: no. I have a naturally sharp eye for grammar, spelling, and cohesion. I prefer going through my writing myself with a fine-toothed comb, because beta reading my own fics helps me notice what I need to improve at a rate faster than someone else could point it out. Reading my writing aloud is something I also enjoy doing that helps me keep dialogue smooth, my syllables flowing, and my pacing watertight. In addition, because so many of my works are interconnected in an intricate spiral galaxy of depth and parallels and foreshadows and flashbacks and LORE, it's impossible for a beta reader to fully grasp all that I am intending to convey in any single story without reading...literally everything everywhere all at once which I am writing. No oneshot of mine is truly a oneshot. :) However, I don't discount the benefits of beta reading! Editor feedback is valuable for pointing out subconscious habits of mine and improvements to my flow that I can make. It also is valuable in reinforcing my writing voice; I have learned very quickly what sentence structures I am not willing to compromise on, lol. I use what I learn from other endeavors to enhance my fandom writing. I also make an effort to continue reading published books, articles, screenplays, etc. in addition to posted fanfiction. While fanfiction is in no way "inferior" to published work, there is much to learn from published work that has passed through gateways of editing that fanfiction slips by. In other words, just because my fics are deliberately not beta read doesn't mean that I aim to let my writing stay stagnant. I am still learning and will always be learning. Only a few of my fics will be jestingly tagged as "No beta we die like X"—typically older ones from my "Throwback Archive" that I don't care about cleaning up. They're the equivalent of rough sketches, so they don't need to be anywhere near my usual standards for posting. For my giant Fire Emblem fic*, however, I'm worldbuilding with someone in particular. Once I complete a few drafts of the entire massive story, I will have him alone beta read that, in order to get his feedback on keeping the giant cast all in-character, keeping the route-crossing satisfactory, etc. *This is not posted yet and will not be for a while. It's my fanfic magnum opus. It will be hundreds of thousands of words and multiple books long. And, since I am a plantser, I can't share portions of it because it is all written and drafted out-of-order. I can't wait to drop the entire story on AO3 someday. That will be a glorious day.
6. Post links to your 3 fav fics: Well, all my proper "favorites" are the giant ones that haven't been posted yet. (The Three Houses one, Under My Wings, and the secret sparkling project.) My posted "favorites" differ day by day, depending on what mood I'm in. "To Bee a Leader" is ever dear to my heart. But, at present, I am partial to "Where Sorrow Rings" (FE Engage, during-canon angst) "Reigniting" (TLoZ Ocarina of Time during-canon drabble) "もう少しだけ" (Death Note during-canon drabble)
7. How do you write emotional scenes? Do you ever feel what the characters feel? Do you draw from personal experiences? I am invested in what is called "third-person deep POV." I love getting into the head, heart and soul (or, as Transformers would call all three together, the spark) of characters and wresting out their deepest thoughts, feelings, and very being. Line by line, droplet by droplet, I fish it out out of their darkened depths. So, yes, I feel what the characters feel. If I don't feel what the characters feel as I write, then my readers won't either as they read. That is one of my goals in writing characters within third-person deep POV: to make the readers feel what the characters are. Obviously, I can't 1:1 relate to everything my characters go through. Moreover, I hope I don't, since some of them go through some pretty nasty messes I wouldn't wish on anyone. 😂 But, I will thoroughly analyze my characters' perspectives from their shoes and see if anything across my personal experiences can be either directly or distantly relatable to that, and begin composing from there.

Do you think otokonoko anime/manga and characters are just acceptable trans fetishization?
I think that Full Metal Daemon Muramasa is available now from GOG in censored form for the discounted price of $23.99 and the JAST storefront in uncensored form for the reasonable price $39.99. that latter price goes down pretty often when it's on sale, though, so keep an eye out!
the magnum opus of mysterious author and kendo instructor Narahara Ittetsu, Muramasa has held a very strong reputation internationally for how difficult it was to translate. after just over a decade of uncertainty, it is now available to read translated into english in its entirety. you'd be a fool to miss out.

The Regalia's Magnum Opus - Mingled with Darkness
Tumblr media
"Whomever fights monsters should see to it that in the process they do not become a monster. And if you gaze long enough into an abyss, the abyss will gaze back into you."
The mysterious Thirteenth Shard - the world known commonly as the Void - is a major point of contention for many scholars, adventurers, and researchers alike. Its citizens are not unlike that of the ones on Etheirys, but with the great distinction of becoming the physical manifestation of their deepest desires and excesses, left unchecked and wanton due to their inability to truly perish from the primordial Darkness which permeates their realm.
And while this boasts true for the rank-and-file among their hierarchy, there exists an upper echelon of these beings - these "Voidsent" - wherein they are considered and classified as nobility. These beings hold considerable power in the world of darkness, and some are even said to have crossed the boundary between their world and ours, making a more permanent - albeit dangerous - home for themselves. The aforementioned nobles have become the focal point for the Higuri Regalia's latest clothing line.
Created from the genius of the Diamond Sultan, this new collection of exclusive attire blends the aesthetic of the Void with that of the Near East. The inspiration from this coming from the fact that Radz-at-Han was founded atop a now-closed void fissure, this fusion of Thavnairian and Voidal culture has resulted in a beautiful marriage of alluringly tenebral proportions. Armed with such knowledge, the guilds of Radz-at-Han were eager to rekindle their alliance with the Higuri Regalia to fashion together - pun intended - another selection of masterful works.
Tumblr media
Welcome... to the Abyssal Gala.
Thanks to his Mhachi heritage, Lord Thiji Higuri was able to easily create such masterpieces using void matter as the precious resource of choice to make these unique designs possible. But not without some help. For the first time ever, the Regalia has taken under its wing a beloved fan of the business, whom has aspired to become an apprentice for some time now.
Opening the catalogue’s contents, you would find a picture of the Diamond Sultan and his promising apprentice on the very first page, and a foreword on the other, undoubtedly by the aforementioned merchant-lord of fashion… (Credit and thanks to @minstrels-ink and https://twitter.com/CluoraStefany for the pictures!)
Tumblr media
“Greetings, reader.  I am Thiji sor Higuri, Diamond Sultan of the Higuri Regalia.   Beyond this page lies the Power in Beauty Catalogue’s Abyssal Gala - invented through what we now know of the Void.  If you have the drive and the will to achieve new heights of fashion, we humbly welcome you to browse.  However, per protocol, I must warn all new customers who catch wind of this of an important detail:
Due to the amount of passion and dedication put into this extensive  catalogue, we of the Regalia have implemented a special deal to cater to  those who are less favorable towards hostile conditions.  While the outfits and accessories themselves are set at prices that could potentially make the Syndicate’s coffers shudder, a generous discount is offered to those who choose to commission these with an Anti-Glamour enchantment.  This ensures the garments are unmarred and ultimately broken beyond repair - Sisters forbid - as numerous people are so insistent on charging into battle wearing the most impractical of  outfits…”
"With that out of the way, I am pleased to announce that the Higuri Regalia has now begun taking in talented individuals looking to make their mark on the realm of high fashion. These 'Mythrite Apprentices' are fully sanctioned and supported by our company, and will be granted leave to contribute to future lines with their own approved creations. One of such is the lovely Hannish native you see to my left known as Izayoi T. Keer, or Izzy Sapphira. She has shown much promise in recent moons, and it has culminated in her genius being showcased for the first time in this new line. Specially marked pages within this line denote outfits invented by Miss Izayoi; we pray you are pleased with what she has made."
“As always, you may send all commission requests to either myself, Treasurer Susuna, Baroness von Suna, or any of my Head Secretaries if you are interested in receiving enlightenment.”
“Now, seeker of fashion - when you are prepared, you may turn this page, and learn why the Regalia’s motto is ‘Where There is Power in Beauty.’“  -Thiji Higuri
(Starting the day after this post, and every several days thereafter, a new set of attire or accessories will be showcased.  This will simulate the turning of a page whilst giving each piece ample time to be appreciated.)

TEKVENTURES! I wanna ramble about Tekventures.
Tumblr media
if you remember them you qualify for a veterans discount
So they were Sgt.Frog ocs that my best friend SARAZA and I made on flipnote for edgy amvs and comics. I wanna say I wassss 13? give or take. But these little guys were my EVERYTHING. We thought of a billion stories about them. Then I got sick of drawing frogs eventually and wanted to make them more of an original thing. Our first sketches were of anthro goats, but over time with my style changes, an the fact that I hate spending more than 2 seconds drawing anything, they no longer resemble any specific animal and turned into fuzzy nondescript species of alien thing. ANYWAY I wanted to make them into a "real comic series" when i was 17. That's when I started the chapters that are still up on tumblr n webtoons! and a few other sites probably that I forgot about.
Tumblr media
I've been harsh on it in the past but honestly I still love it to bits. What's there is a solid little comic and i still think it's adorable!
The only thing is, that's judging it based on what's there. It's a basis for a cute episodic thing with low stakes! Like the early mlp fim episodes or the new care bears cartoon. But that's NOT what it was planned for in the long term. Oh no, I was so ambitious. I had at LEAST 50 episodes planned which would weave together into this massive arc that would introduce other space teams, wayward space travelers with secret pasts connecting to the main cast, sad backstories for everyone, ALL of the family members of the main cast, a villian team with like... 'anti-versions' of the main cast, and a dramatically foreshadowed final confrontation with robot clones that want to destroy their planet. OH AND ROBIN too! Besides all that, they ALSO have multiple side story episodes about crashing to earth and befriending a human girl named Robin who has to keep them secret.
Tumblr media
That might have been um. a lot.
But when you start writing a story with your best friend when you're 13 you most likely have NO CONCEPT of "too much". Who am I kidding I STILL have trouble pacing myself. But when you come up with a story it's hard not to think it's just GOLD! And that you've gotta keep it no matter what! Because that stuff is fun!
I went full force into the comic in my senior year of highschool and eventually I finished the first chapter! It took me a year. And then I looked at my plans for the other 49 episodes and thought "maybe I need to rework some things.."
I rebooted the comic once, tried making smaller stories, all that, but I wasn't quite feeling the same drive anymore. I realized I was comparing my work to high budget tv shows with like. a full team of writers and artists. and studio funding. and greenlit seasons and all that. And it was making me feel TERRIBLE about my art!
So I quit comics! I started hating comics! I hated how long they took and how restricted I felt (with my own expectations) and I lost my confidence in finishing projects because I was so sad about giving up on my big magnum opus. and I just kinda gave up and started only doing fandom art for a couple years. I did a jyushimatsu ask blog and kept it up for ages! And then a new season of Osomatsu came out and I realized when comparing it that I was basically writing an oc at this point. And that I CAN commit to long term projects if i dont get self conscious about it!
I still didnt wanna jump into comics again. But I thought of some new characters that I was becoming attached to. the very very beginnings of what could turn into a new idea.
Tumblr media
I thought "well i still love cartoons about space! even if im not making tekventures anymore maybe i could do another space story. a really tiny one."
so i started making an rpgmaker game! and it started taking forever. so in the meantime i made a really rough doodle comic about how the characters first met. as a little side story thing.
Tumblr media
and THAT was the key. I had to stop thinking about it like i was making a big cool tv show and starting my career and all that. its just a fun thing, off the cuff, not overthinking it, just for fun and personal expression.
so im still going with it! and its GREAT! Rocket chip has 12 planned chapters, and I'll be halfway done by the end of the year.
But BOY did it take me forever to learn that.

✎ The Raven & The Dove
Completed novelette. 13 chapters, 10.8k words and my only finished story, discounting a cringe 8 chapter short story I wrote when I was 12. Am I proud of this? It's not my magnum opus, that's for sure. I wrote this in 2 months. However, I'm happy that I finished a story and hope to write many more in future.
Summary:
Shadowed by a civilian woman who knows of his profession and yet doesn't care, the assassin for hire known as "The Raven" can't help but act more human.
When the woman, Hannah, worms her way deeper and deeper into the wretched life he lives, The Raven wishes that he was strong enough to turn her away. But his infatuation and her damned persistence won't let him.
As the two spiral deeper down a path of no return, The Raven has to wonder, “Who’s ruin will this lead to?”
His own? Or Hannah’s?
🪻 One Shots 🪻
✎ He, The Whisper (Dreamer adjacent)
POV of a character I don't plan on giving a POV in the actual book. Secondary main character of "Dreamer" and a powerful entity stripped of his original rank. This one shot goes through his thoughts as he's trapped in the Nightmare Realm. 200 words.
✎ Synth-thia, Sin-thia
Quick crack about my OC Zinthia from After School Guardians meeting her original concept who was made by me as a young, cringey child. 994 words.
✎ The Storm Called Death
Vivien from The Frost Prince's Paramour? feeling cold and angry for 195 words. This is only significant because there's a curse on him that causes him to always be cold and will eventually freeze him to death. The only thing that can stave it off is human contact but his family want him to die so he's forbidden from being touched. Otherwise, this is just him having a pity party.
I really wanted to share the newer piece a wrote for this WIP (A Pane-ful Scene) because I love it so much but I think I should keep it in my pocket cuz I might actually use it.
✎ Poor, poor, Mayor Mendler
High key fanfiction of A's Academy For Gifted Girls set post story. It's basically that one prompt about the hero and villain's rivalry being a prank on their brother the mayor except these guys are girls. 1360 words.
✎ Horology
730 words. Father Time stops time because he's disgusted with mortals but the birth and commands of some entities born outside his reach scares him into letting the timestream flow once again. Based off of a line I wrote for a companion piece song to Nighttime Live!
"Once upon a time seven powers arose
Born to a land where time itself froze
The Netherworld let out a quake
Father Time began to shake
In fear of what his God could make"
✎ Monster Knows Best
A young Kai from Pyre & Frost talks about the monster that lives with him in his house. Murder is mentioned and covered up. 374 words.

This chapter takes this magnum opus past 100k! Can't believe it's gotten as long as this and thank you everyone that's sticking with it!
Chapter 17: Dialogue
War is pointless. I have seen a lot of it, far more than I ever cared to, and I have become intimately acquainted with it. While I believe that some things are worth fighting for - such as our quest to defeat the Daleks - I don’t believe in the necessity of all-out warfare to resolve conflict. Most conflicts - providing they concern people and not single-minded war machines - will never effectively be resolved in bloodshed. It’s an endless circle of suffering without knowing who will fall victim to it; whose blood will be spilled; whose lives will be shattered; whose hearts will be broken. The only way to end a bitter war is to do what everyone should have done from the beginning: Sit down and talk. Diplomacy. Dialogue. Consensus.
Rationally, I knew that as I considered the two wars raging on in my mind: There was, for one, the battle I was doing with my past demons. That was a war I had to fight. One couldn’t bargain with demons and I would have to overcome them in my own time. It wasn’t going well. I suppose at the time you could have said my demons had me on the run. In the shape of nightmares, they haunted me, finding me every time I closed my eyes, and they were slowly wearing down my defenses.
It certainly was a contributing factor to the other conflict that was weighing so heavily on me: where my relationship - my friendship - with Helen had been nothing but harmonious for the longest time, there was only conflict now. We were caught in a vicious circle with our fears, wants and needs, going round and round, back and forth, up and down. Every time I thought we were getting somewhere, things changed and the unpredictability of it all was weakening my resolve. The kiss, unexpected and confusing as it had been, had dealt a critical blow. The more I thought on it, the more obvious it became that I wouldn’t be able to keep myself together much longer. I was tired of doing battle. I was tired of facing conflicts. My past demons I could fight a while longer, the battle of my heart, however, had reached the tipping point. It was about to break me. It was time to do the one thing we should have done long ago: talk.
I splashed water in my face and shuddered from the cold that awakened my senses. I knew I had to find a way of talking things through with Helen at last and work out where I stood. I could feel myself tearing apart under the strain of being pulled back and forth. The question remained as to how.
Taking a deep breath, I assessed myself in the small mirror. I looked desperately tired and I couldn’t help but chuckle and shake my head to myself. Don’t get me wrong, I am quite happy with my appearance and am pretty confident in it but there and then, I wasn’t surprised at Helen’s lack of interest in me. Discounting, of course, the fact that she had kissed me… Before my mind could take me into another tailspin, I dried my face with a paper towel and turned away. Sleep would help, I told myself. I would get some rest, gather my strength and approach Helen after. By then, I hoped I would have a plan for how to do so… Either way, I couldn’t hide out in the bathroom all day so reluctantly, I returned to the main cabin.
I probably should have stayed to gather my thoughts a little longer, my grasp on my emotions was tenuous at best, particularly when I caught sight of Helen. She was sitting in one of the four seaters to the right of the plane, facing forward. I hoped I could slip past and she wouldn’t look up but sensing the movement behind her, she did just that. And that was it. I stalled in my tracks when our eyes met.
My face must have said it all as her expression turned concerned. I hovered in the middle aisle. I needed comfort and despite everything, as my best friend she was best placed to provide just that. I was relieved, surprised and deeply grateful to find she seemed still willing to play that part.
“Do you want to sit with me?” She offered softly and I nodded.
“Yes,” I managed no more than a single syllable as my chest felt tight and I could barely swallow my emotions. They were incredibly difficult to keep under wraps, crawling up in my guts and across my back, invading my mind and threatening my eyes with tears. I moved to sit across from her but she demonstratively scooted over and made room beside her, an open invitation should I wish to take it - and I did. As I sat, I realised we were far closer than we had been in a long time - except for the events that had brought on my state of distress. I pulled at the ends of my sleeves, anxiously fiddling with them, which was one of many tell-tale signs that I was not well and I knew Helen would be able to spot them all. No-one knew me as well as she did.
“Are you okay?” Her question was a natural starting point and yet, her soft tone of voice surprised me. I couldn’t tell whether it was because she could see how much I needed her or if she was finally ready to talk. I couldn’t be sure but I, for my part, had reached the end of my tether. And so, I did something I probably should have done long ago: I stopped pretending.
“No,” I admitted, and tears, unbidden yet inevitable, filled my eyes. As my walls crumbled, so did my resolve and my determination not to ask for the things I wanted and needed. I swallowed my pride. “Can I-” I didn’t need to explain to make myself understood. I simply turned towards her, reached out gently and Helen went the rest of the way.
“Yes,” she confirmed softly and wrapped her arms around me; and for the first time since the Daleks appeared in the skies of London, I felt truly safe. Gingerly, I reached around her and rested my head in the crook of her neck. Her arms around my shoulders tightened and her hand reached into my hair, stroking softly. It was a lovely feeling and the last of my defenses came crashing down.
“You’re still my best friend,” I whimpered pitifully and Helen’s voice was heavy with tears of her own when she replied:
“And you mine.”
And at that, I started crying properly.
“What is going on with us, Helen?” I sobbed and clawed myself into her shoulders. “How can we fix this? I can’t do this much longer, it’s tearing me apart!” It truly was. I had never felt as broken as that. Not even on Nixyce VII; or when I was floating in the depth of space, awaiting death; or when I had been given my terminal diagnosis. I had been dealt blow after blow but I hadn’t broken. I had been too stubborn, too bullheaded. I had grown bitter and hard and numb. Now, through Helen, I had become the very opposite. While you could argue I’m still stubborn, I am not bitter anymore, I haven’t been for a long time. Not since meeting Helen. And I didn’t feel numb anymore, not with her. With Helen I felt so very much alive and I felt like I was on fire as I stumbled through what might very well become the ruins of our friendship. I hadn’t broken before because I had gotten used to the hardships, I hadn’t known any different. Now I did. Helen had made me dream again, I had hope, I had a future that I wanted to see, wishes that I longed to see realised. I had things to lose and I was utterly unprepared for it.
“Me too,” Helen whispered in response and she was beginning to tremble as her composure slipped as well, catching me off guard with a wave of emotion that I’d had no idea she was keeping at bay. “I’m so sorry, Liv, I’m so so sorry, it’s all my fault,” she sobbed and clung on to me in turn. That was something I didn’t want to hear and I couldn’t let it stand. I would not have her blame herself for something I had started and forced upon her.
“No, it’s not, Helen, it was me that-” I started and pulled away. I could regain my composure if just to comfort her. That was something I could do. So I grasped her face and sought to wipe away the hot tears that fell onto her cheeks.
“But it is, Liv, it is,” she repeated, laughing bitterly and she shook her head. “I just-” She gasped for breath.
“Just tell me what you want me to do,” I told her firmly, trying to make my voice confident and steady. “Tell me, how you want me to act, what I’m allowed to-” I became keenly aware of how wonderful it felt to hold her face, be as close to her as I was, but all I wanted was for her to stop crying and I was prepared to do anything to make that happen. “Just tell me where I stand Helen, and I promise I will do everything in my power to make things go back to normal. That’s all I need, for you to tell me what you want!” And I meant it. I didn’t want to put pressure on her but I knew that if she gave me her decision, I could put myself together again the way she needed me to. I just had to know and in the long run, I would be okay.
Helen gave a weak, sorrowful smile.
“I want to kiss you again. That’s what I want, that’s what I-” Her voice was barely more than a whisper and she cast her eyes down, even as I caressed her cheeks.
“What?” I mumbled as her words didn’t sink in. It was as if she all of a sudden was speaking a foreign language which bore no meaning to me.
“I should have just let you kiss me when we got back to Bakerstreet and we wouldn’t be-” she continued quietly, sadly, and slowly I pulled away. “I know I hurt you so much and what for?” She gave a bitter laugh, shaking her head, and then looked at me, cautiously awaiting my reaction that didn’t come.
I sat stunned, shaking all over, both terrified and exhilarated. My heart was pounding in my chest for fear and excitement alike but I couldn’t move. I couldn’t believe her words, not yet. Not when I had been disappointed before and I feared I might be misinterpreting things through wishful thinking.
“I thought you… weren’t interested in me…” I mumbled at last, surprised I managed to form words at all.
“Of course I am interested in you,“ she breathed and her expression was nothing short of regretful. She dropped her gaze again in what appeared to be shame. I couldn’t speak as the words echoed through my mind. I needed a moment to compute them. Helen tried to bridge the tense silence with stuttered explanations: “I just… didn’t know how to… or what… God, Liv, I don’t know how to do this.“
“Helen, what are you saying?“ I asked softly, trying to make sense of her words. I needed her to explain another way before I would be able to believe that my mind wasn’t playing tricks on me.
Suddenly, there was an explosion.
The plane shook violently and we lost altitude. We dropped for a moment, and I gasped from the pain that shot through my ears from the loss of pressure and the sheer volume of an explosion. I knocked into the table and Helen’s cry of anguish seemed to come from far away, despite our proximity. Perhaps my eardrums had burst… My ears were ringing and I felt dizzy and nauseous as I tried to get my bearings.
Another blast hit the plane and instinctively, I lunged for Helen, pulled her into my arms to protect her.
We were under attack.
At the time, I couldn’t grasp what was happening, not properly, but we were being shot at. Energy blasts bolted past the windows as we took a sharp left turn.
“LIV!” River yelled over the noise and Helen and I didn’t need words to understand each other. Our emotional confessions would have to wait for a time where our lives weren’t in immediate danger - if such a time would ever come. We bolted upright and, pulling ourselves along the seats, we rushed to the cockpit as quickly as we could while the plane shuddered.
“Okay, so, maybe we didn’t go quite as unnoticed as we had planned. They might have been waiting for us!” The Doctor didn’t sugarcoat things. The Daleks had spotted us and in the bright light of day - with no clouds in the sky to hide behind - we had become an easy target. There was nowhere to run. Looking back, I can’t tell you how between four objectively intelligent people such as us, it hadn’t occurred to us to wait for cover of night. I think, for a moment, we had felt invincible. We had accomplished what we had set out to do. We’d had the unexpected joy of River join us. And we had her magic piece of equipment that was supposed to be the solution to all of our problems. I was beginning to have serious doubts about that. “Liv, take over!” The Doctor requested and I already had my hand on the yoke.
“This is a passenger plane, we have no means of defending ourselves,” River observed, craning her neck to look around the sky for our attackers. “We need to outrun them.”
“How did they find us?” Helen shouted over the noise as another blast hit the back of the plane. The yoke was shaking violently in my hand, I could hardly keep the plane steady. One of our engines had likely been damaged. There was no way we would make it back to England in that state. We had to land and I wasn’t sure I would even be able to do that safely.
“They spotted us on the way there and must since have worked out a way to scan through the dampener,” the Doctor carried on as I tried to evade the weapons blasts.
“They’re going to shoot us down,” River warned, her voice tense and I ground my teeth.
“The best I can hope for is getting us down in one piece,” I yelled as a shot narrowly missed us.
“Do it!” The Doctor agreed hurriedly and another blast smacked into the rump of the plane. It ripped a hole into the main cabin, I could feel the draught of air escaping but River was quick enough to act and pull the cockpit door shut.
Everything happened very quickly.
“Hold on tight everyone!” I eased the yoke down and we took a dive, though more quickly than I would have liked. I’m not exactly sure how much of it was my doing and how much altitude we were losing through the damage we were sustaining. One of the engines sputtered and gave out. The ground was getting closer at an alarming rate. I tried to pull us up again, level out so we could glide the rest of the way but the plane was barely responding. “BRACE!” I shouted and out of the corner of my eye, I saw the Doctor pull Helen down, shield her as best as she could.
I waited until the last second, did everything I could to stabilise us which was precious little. In an explosion, the one remaining engine went up in flames as well and I lost what little control I had. I barely had enough time to duck under my arms as we crashed into the ground.

“Med-tech Chenka?”
I’d been leaning against the wall to one side of the waiting area. I didn’t like standing in the centre of a group of strangers - most of which looked less than trustworthy - so I had taken to pressing my back to a wall from where I could observe the room. There hadn’t been much in the way of engagement from the facility staff, so when my name was called out by a young man in a lab coat, I was surprised. He was scanning the crowd, evidently searching for me and slowly, I raised my hand. There was no point in second thoughts now, not if I wanted to find out what the Ides Institute was all about.
“Yes?” I took a step forward.
“Ah, great! If you would follow me,” he gestured for me to come along and I felt an awfully lot of eyes on me as I did as asked. I wasn’t sure how long the ever-growing crowd had been waiting but it must have been some time.
I wasn’t really sure of what I was doing when I was led further into the building. I had filled out the forms - as truthfully as I dared in some places, omitting details in others - but it seemed enough for them to take an interest. I was interested too, if just to see what the place was about. There was security and I couldn’t blame them. With the state of the world outside, being the only ones with significant resources could make them a desirable target.
I was shown to an interview room of sorts. It wasn’t as sterile as the interrogation room I had been put in on the Space Service vessel, but it wasn’t exactly comfortable either - a lot of polymer and glass. At least the man across from me had a somewhat warm expression.
“We don’t get a lot of med-techs out here,” he opened and I had hoped my profession might be a hook to get them talking. I needed them to be interested to find out more about the workings of the Institute. “Particularly not ones educated to such a high standard at Kaldor City Hospital.”
“You pulled my records,” I observed, trying not to be too unsettled or seem surprised. That was something I hadn’t expected. For the Institute to be able to learn about my education on the basis of a name and profession, meant they had resources and connections even greater than I had anticipated. I tensed but tried my best not to let my uneasiness show. If they managed to find my educational record, there was every chance they could get hold of my employment history and follow the trail to Nixyce VII. I had just outrun the Space Service, I had no intention of being returned to Kaldor. I wondered if I had made a mistake by putting down my real name but if I hadn’t, I might not have been called for interview. Many others seemed to be waiting in vain.
“You wouldn’t believe the amount of fake credentials we are given, this is a desired opportunity and we have to be able to rely on the expertise of our volunteers,” the man carried on easily and not unpleasantly so. “Alongside a science and a communications officer, as well as a captain, medical support would be most advantageous.”
I simply gave a nod of acknowledgement.
“Perhaps you could give me a little more detail on what exactly the mission entails?” I queried cautiously.
“It’s very much as the poster says: We are looking to recruit a crew with varied qualifications between them to undertake a mission to the edge of space. We have developed technology to allow for information to be passed back to us, all we need now are volunteers to undertake the great endeavour. The adventure of a lifetime,” he spoke the words with enthusiasm like a sales pitch. He seemed quite eager to gain my interest, which was encouraging. I would have to try less hard to convince them of my abilities, but it also opened up more questions:
“The adventure of a lifetime, huh? I’m not an expert but I’m fairly certain the edge of the universe is an awfully long way away. I have travelled in space plenty and even with the most powerful drive systems, I doubt it would be the matter of just one lifetime.”
“You’re inquisitive and quick, Med-tech Chenka, you would be a prime candidate. Of course, you’re right. You would be put in stasis until the ship arrives at its destination, the autopilot would be programmed accordingly,” he explained but wasn’t put off by my scepticism.
“Makes sense. Though that would mean all manner of things could happen to us while we’re in cryo sleep… and - forgive me if I’m being blunt - I don’t know of any space ships that would sustain a journey as long as that and then have enough fuel for the way back…”
I awaited his response as I folded my hands in my lap.
“You’re right of course. It would - most likely - be a one-way mission,” he answered after short deliberation and studied my expression, my reaction, as closely as I was studying his. He seemed intrigued by how I would respond but all I gave was a huff and a chuckle.
“Hence the generous compensation advertised?” I deduced and he leaned onto the table.
“Does that knowledge put you off?” He questioned outright and I mulled it over for a moment. The answer came far easier than I would have expected as it was a truthful one:
“No.” I hadn’t walked in here with the intention of signing up to a one-way mission to the end of the universe, but sometimes things just fall into place. A plan was forming in my mind. Meanwhile, the interviewer seemed pleased with my response as he smiled and tapped on his tablet with some enthusiasm.
“What would be your motivation for going? I’ve spoken to volunteers who want to support their family’s future with the monetary pay-out, people who have a scientific interest in what’s out there and wanting to make a name for themselves… what should I put down for you?” He watched me curiously.
“I simply want to… go and see the stars, far away from here, do something with the rest of my life.” It was a fact that I wouldn’t have much life left but they didn’t need to know that. In fact, they mustn’t know it if I wanted a chance at being selected. Given the fact that I would never be able to return home as easily as that and that I had little interest in staying in the Frontier Colonies, it didn’t seem like such a bad option. I also had an idea for how to make good use of the generous pay package that seemed to be on offer. The course for the limited future I had was becoming more and more clear. Maybe I didn’t need to spend what remained of my life trying to help the people of this world while having no resources and hope of doing so. Maybe I could get away and leave behind the means of actually getting these people out of poverty. I wouldn't need money, not in the long run.
“Well, it’s safe to say we are interested in employing your services, we can talk contractual details once we are sure you are as suitable for the mission as you appear on paper,” he smiled. “Numerous tests and lengthy preparation for the journey will be required.”
“I suppose that’s fair, given it’s the mission of a lifetime quite literally,” I conceded. “Will I be able to stay at the Institute for the duration?” I didn’t fancy looking for accommodation in the meantime, particularly if I was going to dedicate myself to this mission. While I wasn’t sure yet whether the Ides Institute was trustworthy or what its sidelines and research were doing to the Colony, I felt like I might have found a good option to use up what was left of my life. Seeing the end of the universe wouldn’t be such a bad final accomplishment.
“That is a requirement, yes,” he confirmed and I smiled, trying not to look too eager. The prospect of having a roof over my head, a meal and a bed was incredibly tempting in itself.
“Then fine,” I agreed and he was plenty enthusiastic for the both of us when he grinned:
“Excellent.” He took some notes down on his tablet, then looked up to me once more, eager to keep going: “Have you ever been in stasis before?”
“Not for any length of time,” I answered truthfully. There had been a few instances in which I had been put in prolonged artificial sleep during a long space journey but that was it. Actual, prolonged stasis was a whole different matter.
“We will need to do some health checks to be sure you are physically able to participate,” he noted down, nodding to himself and for a moment anxiety swept through me. Medical tests were sure to reveal my terminal condition which would certainly disqualify me from the mission. I would have to find a way around them.
“That won’t be an issue. I am a med-tech after all,” I answered as easily as I could manage. “I’m healthy in every way.”
“It’ll just be a formality then,” he smiled and my heart sank.
---
Regaining consciousness was a nice surprise. I hadn’t actually expected to live, considering the speed at which the ground had hurtled towards us. I remembered thinking that Helen might have a chance with the Doctor protecting her, and that had been comfort enough to hold on to the yoke for as long as I did.
“Liv? Liv-” It was Helen’s voice I could hear when I slowly came to. I would happily follow her voice, wherever she was going to lead me. It was a relief to find she was guiding me back to consciousness and not into the hereafter as I’d feared.
“You’re okay, Liv, come on now,” the Doctor’s voice was there too and as I blinked against bright sunlight, I made out two shapes above me.
“We have to move!” River’s voice came from further away and I squeezed my eyes shut tightly for a moment, willing them to focus and when I opened them again, I found Helen and the Doctor looking down at me. While they both looked dishevelled, their expressions were hopeful. They seemed mostly uninjured. We had all made it - we had been beyond lucky. I parted my lips to speak, ask if they were okay, but no coherent words would come out, just a groan of pain as I became aware of my discomfort. There was a sharp pain in my chest - broken rib, I gathered - a splitting headache - concussion, I deduced - but worst of all were my arms. I whispered a curse under my breath as I shakily tried to raise them. Gritting my teeth through the pain, I forced myself into checking my range of movement and wiggling my fingers. My arms weren’t broken, I realised in relief, but there were lacerations, cuts and burns covering the length of them. I remembered ducking under my arms just before the crash and they had taken the punishment while protecting my head. I winced in pain.
“You’ll be okay,” the Doctor insisted, drawing my focus, and pulled me up to a sitting position. Moving someone as quickly as that after major trauma was unwise but all the while River was urging us on to get going. Despite feeling nauseous and my ears ringing, I managed to take in our surroundings: the crash site. Around us, the plane was in a bad way. It had broken in two, the hull was torn, anything of worth stripped away, it was a husk - one that was catching fire. It was a miracle we had survived. My eyes turned from the destruction and towards Helen who looked incredibly pale, her attention devoted to me and her expression anxious.
“I’m okay…” I told her weakly as my voice returned. We could talk about all the unspoken things later, given we survived this ordeal. All I wanted to do at the time was to reassure her.
“They’re coming!” River called and I spotted her standing a few yards away, her hair tousled and some minor cuts and scrapes but otherwise fine. She was shielding her eyes against the sun and glancing into the distance. I followed the path of her eyes and while my vision was still not fully restored, I could make out shapes in the distance. I didn’t need to be told what was happening. The Daleks were coming to check if they had finished the job. If we wanted to survive, we would have to find shelter and hide.
“Liv, can you stand? We need to get out of here,” the Doctor prompted and I gave a nod even though I wasn’t sure whether that was strictly true. I only knew that I wouldn’t have a choice if I wanted to live.
“Over there, looks like houses!” Helen spoke up hurriedly and pointed to somewhere behind me.
“Get in!” The Doctor grinned at the lucky break.
“Then that’s where we’ll head, come on Sweetie, get them going,” River urged and we didn’t need telling twice. The Doctor and Helen both stood to help me up but it was Helen that wrapped her arm around my middle, making sure I remained upright. I felt dizzy but well enough to walk. The first few steps were unsteady but it quickly passed and while I probably didn’t need Helen’s help after that, I wasn’t going to give up her closeness if I didn’t have to. We had things to talk about but the thoughts were wiped from my mind when a huge explosion took away my ability to hear properly once more. River’s voice was distorted when she yelled:
“Go on, they can’t see us, they have to think we died in the wreckage!”
I looked around and saw her holstering her blaster. Behind us lay an inferno and I drew the inevitable conclusion: River had shot and ignited the fuel tank hoping to make our deaths seem obvious. And so, we rushed towards the nearby buildings.
“How did we walk away from that?” I gasped once we broke into the safety of what seemed to be a set of abandoned barracks.
“We shouldn’t have, we really shouldn’t have,” Helen agreed as she walked me to a nearby chair. The furnishings were sparse but it was of no concern as I dropped onto the chair with adrenaline ebbing away and exhaustion setting in. My arms were throbbing with pain and I knew I’d have to do something about that if I could.
“No but that is what the Crystalliser does. It identifies that one chance and amplifies it,” River explained, taking up position by a window to see what the Daleks were doing. Meanwhile, the Doctor was giving the door a blast with her sonic to lock it and interjected:
“But that doesn’t mean we’re always going to walk away, sometimes, there is no chance and-”
“But we did, we’re okay,” River sought to calm her and reassure the lot of us. She reached into her pocket and pulled out the valuable piece of technology, presumably to check it hadn’t been damaged in the crash. “They’re circling the wreckage… don’t seem interested in anything else.”
“This was a lucky find. Of all the places we could have crashed: we have a nearby - what is this? - army base?” I looked around and tried to work out what exactly this place was. While the basics of furniture remained, the space had clearly been cleared out. I didn’t expect anyone to be returning any time soon.
“Also thanks to the Crystalliser,” River mused as she pocketed the device once more. “As is the fact that they seem to be flying off without searching the area!” She broke into a grin.
“They’ll be watching the skies, we ought to stay here, wait for cover of darkness, make them think we died in the plane crash, then carry on by road,” the Doctor mused, stepping up to the window to watch the Daleks carry on on their way.
“This will add days to our journey,” I groaned as I weighed our options. The best we could hope for was that there was some sort of military transport that had been left behind. Under normal circumstances I wouldn’t have expected to find anything of value left behind but given our lucky charm, I had the feeling we might do regardless.
“We will pick up another plane but not yet, it’s too dangerous,” the Doctor hummed, keeping her eyes on the skies outside. “We'll have to wait until tonight for sure.”
“Let’s have a scout around for supplies, there’s bound to be a lot here,” River seemed to have moved on from the Daleks and started looking around. All of our supplies had been aboard the plane and we needed to be prepared for the onward journey.
“Medical kit would be nice…” I hummed, mourning the loss of the one I’d had but I was sure that was the sort of thing we would come across. My arms were burning with sharp pain. The wounds would need cleaning out and bandaging up to avoid infection.
“Not a problem!” River gave back with a grin as it was one of the first things she found. “Catch!” She threw it in my direction and I rolled my eyes at her exasperated. I was in no condition to catch it. She had, however, not aimed for me but Helen. She gave an endearing squeak of surprise as the medical kit knocked straight into her chest but she managed to hang on to it. She looked over to me and I gave her an encouraging smile. It wasn’t like I would be able to bandage myself up anyway.
“We’ll go have a look around, don’t go anywhere!” The Doctor warned us and we both nodded.
“You’ll have to talk me through this.” Helen gave an apologetic smile once River and the Doctor had left to search the place. She set the medical kit onto the table and unzipped it.
“You’ll be fine,” I answered confidently and rested my elbows on the table. Most of the injuries stretched across the outside of my lower arms where I had ducked and put them over my head. Whether it had been the windscreen shattering or debris from the nose of the plane was anybody’s guess. There was one particularly nasty, deep cut that went up the length of my left arm. I was lucky that it was the outside of my arms as my ligaments seemed intact. Another stroke of luck in an unlucky situation. I examined my injuries with keen medical interest while Helen had gone rather pale. She pulled up a second chair and sat down next to me, wringing her hands together clearly unsure where to start.
“Just… clean it, disinfect it, wrap it up…” I explained to help her along. “That big cut might need suturing through…” I nodded towards my left as I held out my arms to her. “Maybe, if you wrap up my right arm first, I can then have a go at it…” I suggested.
“Won’t it hurt?” Helen asked, growing visibly concerned but started pulling compresses and antiseptic from the kit.
“There might be some local anaesthetic in there if I’m lucky,” I retorted, glancing into the bag. “Which of course, I am,” I gave a mild smile and nodded towards a set of vials and syringes.
“Right, okay…” she nodded, and set it all out on the table. Her hands were shaking ever so slightly. It was quite the role reversal.
“It’s really not that bad under the circumstances. I heal pretty quickly, remember?” I reassured her. “Start on the right, wipe as much of the blood off as you can, then put some disinfectant on it. Then cover it up with a sterile compress or something like that and put a bandage around it.” I pointed out the different items as I went and gave her a hopeful smile.
“You make it sound so easy,” she hummed and I chuckled.
“Just take your time.”
Carefully, Helen took hold of my right arm and started sponging the blood away. The cuts she revealed were numerous. She was very gentle about it, doing her best not to cause me any more pain than necessary. The disinfectant, however, was bound to cause just that. I winced when she sprayed it onto my wounds.
“I’m sorry,” she whispered anxiously but just shook my head and ground my teeth through it.
“It’s fine,” I promised her once the initial burn subsided a little. “Try not to think about it too much.” She looked distressed not because she had a problem with blood but because she didn’t like hurting me, I realised, and so I decided to try and distract her: “Bad timing, wasn’t it?” The words had slipped over my lips before I had given some thought to what to say. It was the one - the only - thing on my mind, now that we were in relative safety again. I could have slapped myself had my arms been in better condition. Putting Helen on edge even more had not been the plan but now the words had been said and the subject broached once more.
“Yes, I suppose it was…” She hummed in response as she pressed gauze to the injured areas. I reached out, difficult as it was with my other hand, and held the compresses in place so she could get the bandage to secure them.
“Do you want to-” I stalled for a moment, wondering if it was the right time, the right place but part of me knew that there never would be a right time if we carried on as we were. Moments in between were all we had right now and this was one of them. No running. No fighting. Just sitting still and tending to our wounds as we awaited the next brush with danger. The Doctor and River were off scouting around the place leaving us with privacy and opportunity to speak of the things we needed to. I took a deep breath. “I mean what we were talking about earlier, before we were interrupted…”
“I- I suppose we should…” Helen nodded her acknowledgement, awkwardly fiddling with the beginning of the bandage.
“Helen-” I started, intent on laying my heart bare to her. If there was any chance her interest in me was something she wanted to pursue, I would make sure she had all the facts to make a decision with. I would tell her plainly just how deeply I felt for her.
“No, Liv… let me try to explain,” she interrupted gently, her brow creasing into an emotional frown. Her eyes remained on the task of gently wrapping the bandage around my arm but her expression betrayed her mind wandering.
“Okay…” I nodded and waited patiently as she gathered her thoughts. Difficult as it was, I wanted her to be comfortable so I thought it best to leave her to dictate the pace of our conversation.
“I… I told you about my brother, didn’t I?“ She started at last and immediately, I knew what she was referring to: Albie. Her brother who had been taken away to prison for being gay. Not long ago she had shared his story with me after we had helped out our neighbours Ron and Tony. Suddenly, I started seeing some of the things she’d said in a different light. She had said she was a little jealous of them on Albie’s behalf but seemingly, it had been more than that… for the first time I considered she might have been jealous for herself as well, for their ability to lead the life they wanted, while she…
“Yes, but Helen, that was years ago and…“ I offered gently as I hoped she would see that what had happened to her brother wouldn’t happen to her. We lived in a different time. It shouldn’t be something that held her back if what she wanted was… I couldn’t bring myself to say it, to even think it, not yet.
“It’s easy for you! You didn’t grow up like that!” Helen interrupted me with deep-rooted frustration in her voice as she tied the end of the bandage up. “You’ve never had anyone tell you it’s wrong to feel those things, to see someone you love, your own sibling, die because…“ Tears threatened to overwhelm her and I acted quickly, I brought my hand down on hers and grasped tight hold.
“It’s okay, Helen, I understand…“ I started but she just shook her head:
“No, you don’t and that’s fine, just… just, please, try to imagine how hard this is for me,” she requested weakly and I could hardly deny her that.
“Okay…“ I nodded and she did too. Slowly, tentatively, she intertwined our fingers properly, watching our hands as they rested in the table between us, and she kept watching them as she took a deep breath and continued:
“I am interested in you,” she repeated the words she had uttered before our plane had been shot down. She hadn’t thought better of it and I hadn’t misheard her at the time. My heart jumped into my throat, starting to hammer furiously as she continued: “I like you… more than just a friend but I didn’t know how to… and then, when I was finally starting to work things out in my head, slowly coming to terms with those things for myself… you started dating Tania and I…” She broke off for a moment, brushing stray tears off her cheeks awkwardly while gathering her composure. My heart went out to her as I considered what that must have been like. “I pushed it all down, locked it away again, because it hurt…“ She confessed and I nodded mutely. I understood what it meant to lock feelings away. I had been doing it for years with my feelings for her but I had never had the misfortune of having to watch her take up a relationship with someone else. Guilt settled in my gut, sorrow for not having realised that that was what was going on and having inadvertently caused her pain. “And when we saw that future in which you died, I… when I saw myself like that, I wanted to protect myself from that heartbreak… so I pushed you away, I thought if I didn’t… if I didn’t fall in love with you, that future couldn’t happen. I wouldn’t lose you.“ Her voice broke and so did my heart.
“Helen…“ I squeezed her hand, fighting tears of my own. It should have been a joyous occasion, the realisation of my hopes and dreams to hear her confess her interest in me, but to see the pain it had caused her didn’t allow me to rejoice.
“But I was so wrong,” Helen acknowledged at last and looked up to me. “I was already in love with you, I was just hurting both of us for no good reason…“ She gave a sorrowful smile and my heart leapt at the depth of emotion in her eyes, emotions that could only be described as love. My other arm could wait. I had far greater concerns.
“You were scared,” I tried to express my understanding, even as all I could really think about was the fact that she had just admitted to being in love with me.
“I was terrified, I still am!“ She gave a bitter laugh through tears.
“Of what?“ I questioned and grasped her hand tighter, ignoring the pain that shot through my arm as a result. There was no way I would let her go, not now, not ever, not now that she- “I am not going to die on you, no way, I won’t…“ While my current state wasn’t exactly reassuring, I started making promises anyway and she interrupted me:
“I’m terrified you hate me for how I treated you.“
“Oh Helen…” My expression softened. “I don’t. I couldn’t…“ Never, not for a moment, had I felt anger over how she had behaved towards me. Confusion, yes. Sadness, of course. Anger? Never.
“And I’m terrified how deeply you could hurt me, if you wanted to, if the Daleks took you from me or…“ She seemed to shrink into herself, turning her into the scared little girl that I imagined had been trapped inside her all these years, unable and scared of becoming the woman she wanted to be and realise the dreams and feelings she had.
“Don’t you trust me, Helen?“ I asked gently and she gave a sad smile.
“Of course I do.“
“I would never hurt you,” I told her firmly and she shook her head to herself.
“I’m a coward, aren’t I…“
“No,” I shook my head as well. “You’re one of the bravest, most amazing people I’ve ever met. You’re protecting yourself because in the time you grew up you couldn’t be the person you wanted to be; so instead of conforming and giving in, you chose to keep your own company and lock away your heart in pursuit of other goals. That’s not cowardice, that self-preservation,“ I gave her a smile of understanding and then pressed a kiss to her hand as I chose my words carefully: “But you’ve also been denying yourself every opportunity for happiness… not that you need a person to make you happy, you’re not dependant on others to do that, I know that, that’s not what I meant, I just…“ I gave a weak smile. “It’s scary to let someone else in, trust me, I know… but you’re denying yourself the opportunity not only to be hurt by someone but also to have them look after you. Cherish you. Love you.“
“Oh Liv…“ Helen sobbed and buried her face in her free hand. Quickly, I reached up, cupped her cheek and brushed away the tears as best as I could.
“Please just… give me a chance,“ I asked. I pleaded for the one thing I had wanted for so long. “Let me try to make you happy. I know I can.”
She cried more freely but nodded mutely and kept doing so until she had regained control over her voice:
“If that’s- If you still want that, after everything-” she whispered and I smiled through tears of my own:
“More than anything…” My heart was pounding at the prospect.
“Guess you were right…” she mumbled as she wiped her eyes. “It’s impossible to make yourself stop loving someone…“
“So you lied when you said you’d never been in love…” I noted, softly, and she nodded:
“Yes. I’m sorry,” she answered remorsefully but I had forgiven her already. I leaned forward and brought our lips together once more. Helen stiffened for a moment, caught off guard, but I held my nerve. I waited patiently for the tension to ease from her posture and slowly, tenderly, she returned my kiss. Her lips were warm and soft, trembling and wet with tears though they were, and I committed everything about the kiss to memory.
