Fred Smith Tribute

It is with great sadness CEI shares the passing of its founder and inspiration Fred Smith.  Fred is the animating spirit at the Competitive Enterprise Institute. He conceived of the idea for an organization that would, in his words, "find a more positive answer to the challenge Joseph Schumpeter laid down in his essay, 'Can Capitalism Survive?'" He founded the organization and served as president for nearly three decades.  He died Saturday at the age of 83 at home in Maryland where he is survived by his beloved wife Fran. Fred was a friend and mentor, an advocate and ally, and an inspiration. His bright light lives on in CEI's work.  Fred Lee Smith December 26, 1940 - November 23, 2024

CEI senior economist Ryan Young shared a heartfelt remembrance of his relationship with Fred on the OpenMarket blog. Ryan writes: "CEI had a more freewheeling personality than other think tanks, which is still true today. "Fred himself was the same way. He was gregarious, whip-smart, stubbornly principled, and he was fun. "Everybody in Washington knew Fred, and Fred knew everybody. Even people who disagreed with everything he stood for couldn’t help but like him. He was always smiling and laughing, even when making serious intellectual arguments. People around him couldn’t help but take on some of his joy. Fred was a Washington institution, in a good way. ... "The reason to work for Fred is that he gave CEI’s scholars the freedom to build their own programs and choose the issues where they could make the biggest difference. If you were principled, driven, and entrepreneurial, Fred built an environment where you could succeed on your own terms."

Openmarkets to pay record fine over breaches, former head of trading banned

The corporate watchdog's Markets Disciplinary Panel (MDP) has handed down a record fine of $4.5 million to Openmarkets (OMG) and banned former acting head of trading Virginia Owczarek from providing any financial service for three years, following a history of compliance breaches at the Sydney-based fintech.

The Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) found Owczarek is not fit and proper to provide financial services or to participate as an officer in the financial services industry, having accepted a $2,000 payment from a client for stock tips and engaged in "inappropriate and unprofessional communications" with a client regarding SMARTs alerts.

The regulator also found Owczarek used personal devices for client communications, including trading instructions. 

This is just part of a wider compliance and supervision problem identified by ASIC at the wealth management and trading fintech between 2018 and 2021, and Openmarkets claims to have turned a new leaf since then.

The company has raised $10 million since inception, according to Crunchbase, and pulled out of an initial public offering (IPO) in 2021 with its former CEO Ivan Tchourilov resigning in early 2022.
