Prince of Vale 10
(back to more serious matter)
5 am, cafeteria
Jaune: *sitting down in front of Ren, looking exhausted*
Ren: Jaune, are you ok?
Jaune: *looking back at his friend, a tired smile on his face* Never better. *Yawn* The splitting up of the SDC and Vacuan's demands of reparations are a nightmare to deal with, faunus activists are mad at my decision with Blake and the coffee machine broke.
Ren: ... Strangely enough, i feel as if the last part is what's really breaking the camel's back.
Jaune: *sigh* No coffee equals Ozpin not being able to work at all. *Rubbing his eyes* The damn fool is an addict. So i had to take care of most of the paperwork by myself.
Ren: *taking his eyes off Jaune, looking at Oobleck still being as quick as ever while preparing the schoolwork for the day* Are you sure there isn't a second machine?
Jaune: *shaking his head* Oobleck is naturally this energetic. Besides, his thermos is full of hot cocoa, not coff- *sees an energy drink in front of him* -ee. *Perplexed, looking at Ren* You brought this?
Ren: *also perplexed* No? I don't drink that, it's bad for the heart.
Jaune: *looking around, seeing nobody beside them* ... *Shaking his head* I must have bought it then. Guess i'm soo tired, i'm getting memory loss.
Meanwhile
Cinder: *looking down at Trivia* You gave him the drink?
Trivia: 👍
Cinder: *nodding* Good. *Sigh* It was hard enough to see him work all night without being able to help... *Pensively* Do you think we should assassinate Jacques? It would fix a lot of problems.
Trivia: 🤔 🙅
Cinder: *sigh* Figured as much.

Could you elaborate more on if Summer and gylinda (sorry if that's spelled wrong) were narrative foils? That sounds really interesting!
right so from what little we know about what glynda’s been up to since the fall of beacon is that she is, to all appearances, the ONE member of the inner circle who took a deep breath after ozpin died and kept her shit together. the others:
lionheart, already a traitor, continued to ask how high when salem said jump
ironwood exacerbated the global crisis by withdrawing his troops and closing the borders, thus inflicting deep economic pain on mantle and eroding international trust
qrow imploded and had to crawl back up from rock bottom after his faith in ozpin was destroyed
theodore refused to act until it was almost too late to prevent the crown’s coup because he was preoccupied with the more distant threat of salem
but glynda? she took point on the effort to reclaim beacon academy from the grimm and whenever she wasn’t doing that she was personally rebuilding vale. the last we see of her in v3, she’s on the brink of collapse working herself to the bone in vale. but in ‘after the fall’ she’s holding things together, even if just by her fingernails; she’s on top of it enough to have team CFVY’s academic transcripts and a letter of recommendation ready for them when they decide to apply for transfer to shade. in v4, half a year after beacon fell, port and oobleck seem optimistic about the situation at the beacon (“there is still much work to be done at the school” says busy and difficult, but the mood isn’t dire). and when we glimpse her again in v8, it’s apparent that normalcy has been restored in downtown vale; the dust shop is open for business and the streets outside are not overrun by grimm.
glynda had a hellish nightmare situation thrust into her hands as the de facto new headmistress of a fallen school and the person all of vale turned to for protection and guidance in the wake of this horrifying tragedy, and within a year she managed to pick up the pieces and restore peace and safety within the city, even if she couldn’t take back her school. that is astounding, and especially striking in context with the rest of the inner circle crumbling.
what made her different?
this is speculative. but i think that glynda, like summer rose, is a true believer in the ideals that huntsmen are supposed to uphold: compassion, mercy, cooperation, striving for peace, defending those who cannot defend themself. she trusted ozpin, but unlike the others, her loyalty was not for him but for the things he claimed to believe… so when everything fell apart and the burden of leadership landed on her shoulders, she acted in accordance with those ideals. reached out, brought people together, trusted in those who offered their help, and kept widening the circle until the great burden had been shared between many hands. and after salem razes vale? she does the same. goes to find help.
(i don’t think she told anyone about salem, but rather she put her faith in humanity’s capacity to pull together rather than try to shoulder everything herself. this is in contrast to qrow during the haven arc and ironwood, who bring new people into the loop but see the world as hopelessly divided and riven by distrust.)
if i am right about this and also on the mark with regard to summer rose, this would position them as reflections of each other: both huntresses who believe in and embody the true ideal of what they are supposed to be, both guided in their choices by this staunch moral conviction. summer discovers that she is complicit in enacting a horrific injustice and without hesitation turns around to stand with the victim against even her own family; glynda weathers a catastrophic tragedy and stands tall while every other pillar of ozpin’s circle collapses because she puts herself among the people and inspires them to keep pushing with her. both of them Do What’s Right.
which makes it very narratively compelling to juxtapose them with each other, because they are opposites—fighting on opposite sides—but they are also the same.
furthermore, summer has been holding beacon academy against glynda’s siege for the last year-and-a-half or so; either summer has been able to avoid notice during this time, in which case glynda is due to be hit by a freight train of a moment of realization, or glynda has seen her and knows that her opponent is summer rose—a woman who may once have been her student or her classmate, depending how old glynda is supposed to be, and certainly someone she knew and worked with fourteen years ago when they both believed in ozpin.
if that isn’t grounds for a very personal enmity in the vein of cinder and winter or qrow and clover, i will eat. my. hat. summer was there the night beacon fell—she’s the one who left ruby alive when she scraped cinder off the tower—fighting on the side of the grimm. she’s the one who’s been steadily drawing grimm to the school on salem’s behalf! that is glynda’s home! those were her students who died that night! and in reverse, it is almost certainly glynda who knows the secret of the vault’s location, glynda who remains steadfastly loyal to the divine cause of subjugation-or-annihilation, glynda who upholds the system summer fights to tear down. DO YOU SEE MY VISION… the disciplinarian and the revolutionary…

Soo if jaune is the only one who pass.. Who gonna be his team? team cfvy? cinder team? Or his gonna be like qrow like a solo hunter
Previous
Short summary of my answer; I haven't really decided on an answer to this question at the time of writing this. For now, I'm thinking he's simply attending Beacon alone without anyone on his team until the next semester when a new team arrives, perhaps. OC team, maybe?
And to answer the suggestions; CFVY is a team of third years and it would be really awkward to just add a first year into their already established dynamic, although it would be very fitting considering the current canon. Cinder has yet to really do anything in Vale, let alone start infiltrating with Emerald, Mercury, and Neo under the disguise as Haven students for the Vytal tournament. Qrow is a solo huntsman after already graduating with Team STRQ, which tells me that having a team is required to graduate.
---------------------------------------------
Jaune's siren wailed at him as he groaned, raising his tired limb and reaching for his scroll. Shutting it off, he blinked, feeling the stinging pain in his eyes. Sleep, once again, continued to be a privilege he hadn't yet earned, or at least not at night, anyways. Giving another groan, he pushed himself from his bed, ready to attempt another day.
The nightmares continued to haunt him, even after a week of his "passing" of initiation. He gagged on his toothbrush thinking about it, throwing up in the sink. With a weak groan, he turned on the faucet and washed away most of the bile. He'd get the rest later, if he had the energy for it. For now, he had to finish getting ready.
Looking to the time, he'd have to miss breakfast. Again. He couldn't remember the last time he had breakfast before initiation. He closed his eyes to try and remember but could only sway and nearly fall over after overcoming the pain in his eyes. Pulling on his uniform, he made his way down to class.
"Good morning, Jaune." The girl greeted as she passed him. He groaned like a zombie in return. He never caught her name, but he recognized her by her large rabbit ears on her head. She'd tried starting a conversation with him, but he was either too tired or she was too busy with her team to take it further than small talk. Still, it was nice to be greeted every morning by a friendly face.
"Mr. Arc, so glad of you to finally join us." Grumbled Professor Port.
"Huh?" Jaune looked to his watch. Crap, he was late. Class was almost over.
"I will see you after class, Mr. Arc. And don't worry, I've already informed Professor Oobleck, and the headmaster."
Jaune moaned as he slid into his seat. He was about to get another earful of 'no free rides at Beacon Academy' from the large, red huntsman. He blinked once, then twice, then was woken up by a thunderous roar of a weapon being fired.
"What the hell is the matter with you?!" A woman shouted.
"What? Shouting didn't work!" A fat hand waved into Jaune's direction. "And see? He woke up!"
"That is not the-!" The woman sighed. "Jaune Arc, you will return to your quarters and get some rest. You are excused from the rest of your classes for the day."
Jaune, however, couldn't hear her. He was too busy reliving the worst day of his life. Hearing everyone scream, the flash in the cave, the red-eyed nightmares that hunted him in the shadows. Suddenly, a face came into view. It was the face of woman with green eyes and glasses. He felt her cold hands touch his face, forcing her to look at him.
"Look at me." She calmly said. "Breathe with me, okay?" Deep breath in, deep breath out. Deep breath in. Deep breath out. "Do you know who I am?"
"Pruh... Professor Goodwitch." Things started to slow down around him.
"Yes. Yes, that's right. Do you know where you are?"
"I'm... I'm at Beacon." His heart slowed, too. "I'm at Beacon."
"Very good. Very good. Did you hear what I said?"
"I... No. No, ma'am."
"That's okay. I told you to return to your room and get some rest. Do you need help getting there?"
"No, I... I'll be fine." Jaune said, holding back the whole truth. He would be fine reaching his room, but what then? He didn't know.
The only thing he did know what that he was alive, and they were all dead.

I love cooking. Sorry if this isn’t as high quality as the rest! I forgot to save it earlier and it deleted like 7 paragraphs and dialogue so I had to rewrite some of it AND I was struggling to think of how I wanted to continue it. Also it gets kinda funky at the end so uhm yeah if you’ve got any questions about that part feel free to ask ily guys remember to be silly
Split would open her eyes, finding herself in an empty white void. This was definitely a dream, or a nightmare, she hasn’t figured it out yet. Hopefully it wasn’t the latter..
She sat up, looking around before trekking through the blank space, curiosity fuelling each step she took. Something about this place was… ominous. Like she shouldn’t be here.
If that didn’t make it better, she felt as if she were being watched. As if something were documenting her every move while she made her way deeper into the void.
`What if someone is..?`
The thought made her shudder. Someone, or something, was hiding in this blank canvas. Hiding out of sight despite there being no crooks or crevices, nor shelves or walls, to hide in or behind. Whatever this threat was, she did not plan on sticking around for a friendly meet and greet, picking up the pace as her ears lowered.
As she continued on his invisible path, she noticed something in n the far distance. She couldn’t entirely make it out but it seemed… Well she couldn’t really describe it. But seeing as there was nowhere else to go, she made her way towards it.
As the trekked closer she began noticing how the floor was fading from its pristine whiteness to an inky black. If that wasn’t enough, she also noticed how every pawstep she took left a small ripple effect on its surface, as if she were walking on water.
That’s not possible is it? The only times she’s heard of that happening is in religion and that one lizard. Maybe it was oobleck? She knew enough about it, well the basics at least. It was a liquid when there was no force applied and solid when there was.
If so why didn’t it stain her paws? She’s seen it stain people’s hands went dealt with, so why weren’t hers becoming black or at least grey?
She was yanked from her thoughts as she heard the subtle sound of movement behind her, whipping around to meet whoever her friend, or enemy, was. Unfortunately, it was no friend and a deep scowl graced the Fruit-Taur’s face.
"You?! What are you doing here?! How are you even here?! Out of everything, it’d had to be you! I don’t get why DrRETRO doesn’t just use a sledge hammer against you already! No one likes you!"
She snapped at the smiling rock beneath her a quiet yet guttural growl rumbling in her throat as her ears folded back.
"Silence dog creature."
She was taken aback, quite literally, when it spoke, blinking as she stared at it incredulously. Its voice horrifically deep and statical.
"You can talk? You’ve been able to talk this whole time?!"
"Always have been. Now leave."
"Huh-"
"Leave. You’re not supposed to be here. I don’t want you here, your thoughts are too loud and disturbing my work. So shoo shoo, I’m busy."
MR stared up at her, its smiling face unable to show up its obvious glare of disdain and condescending contempt for her.
"You’re still here?"
"You act as if I want to be here."
"Then leave."
"Tell me how!"
"Don’t raise your voice at me, I have divine authority you’d only see on your glass screens."
Split let out a mocking snort.
"You? Divine authority? The most you can do is magic tricks."
The rock, now infuriated, glared at her shoulder, a small flame appearing on her clothing as it did as she let out a yelp and immediately pat it out.
"Apologize and I’ll consider not breaking your limbs. At least not all of them."
"I’m not apologizing to an oversized geode! Especially not one who set me on fire!"
MR was about to set her ablaze entirely, turning her into a blackened banana before a moment of malicious remembrance crossed its mind as it hummed in response. Physical torment lasted long, yes. But anyone could recover from it. Even the most vicious wounds of attacks can be healed, even if they left scars, they still healed.
Emotional and mental torment however... Those were difficult to conquer. Even the strongest of men can crumble at the feet of a weak mind. The detrimental effects that it can leave behind are sickening. The way it can drive people mad and take drastic measures to make it stop. It was too perfect of an idea for the rock to let go. It had used it many times in the past on specific victims, especially its current one.
Besides, it'd be killing two birds with one stone...
"Your friend."
"I have a lot of friends."
"The hairy one."
"I have a lot hairy friends."
"The detective."
"Bive?"
"You two are close, no?"
"Duh! She’s-"
"You care and love her don’t you?"
"Love is such a… strong word? I adore her! But of course I care about her!"
"Interesting. How is it you tell her of your life and she never responds with similar information?"
"She’s probably just had a bad childhood? Wait a minute how do you kno-"
"How do you sympathize with a freak such as her?"
Split’s expression hardened, but before she could jump on the defence, it continued.
"You know she’s a a failure right?
"A mistake."
"She’s not even supposed to exist."
The fruit-taur snarled at it, a spark of fury slowly growing into a bonfire.
"Now listen here you-!"
"What is your goal?"
"What are you talking about?!"
"Is it to be her rock?"
"Is it to be her white knight in glistening armour?"
"To fix her?"
"You’re wasting precious energy on her.. You can’t fix a vase that’s been shattered in to millions of pieces. You can’t fix a broken record. You can’t fix her."
"This isn’t about fixing her! Shut up! You’re just trying to trick me!"
"Au contraire. I’m just trying to enlighten you of your situation. After all we’ve both had someone we care for."
"Well, you still have that someone…"
Despite her fury, a small twinge of confusion nagged her.
Perfect…
"I had someone. I cared for their every need. When they were hungry, I was the first to feed them. When they were thirsty, I always brought them enough water to last them throughout the day. The others? They saw them as an experiment. An analysis. Something to simply studied. Me? I treated them as if they were my own child."
Split felt the anger in her begin dying down as she listened on. For once, she felt… bad for the rock.
“I taught them to walk, to speak. Countless nights I would lay awake for them when they were ill. Whenever it stormed, they were afraid of the thunder, so I would stay by their side to help to rest. To bring them comfort.."
As cruel as the stone was, it sounded like an excellent paternal figure. She never knew it had such loyalty and affection in it. Perhaps something changed it?
"I did everything for them. I would’ve given my life for them. And you know what they did?"
"What?"
"They stabbed me in the back. They left me when I needed them most. I returned to find them gone and my life’s work with them. I loved them and they abandoned me as if I were garbage. Do you know, how painful it is, to care for someone as if they were your successor, your own blood… just to have them turn their back on you..? It’s worse than any physical wound imaginable…"
The fruit-taur couldn’t help but sympathize with it. Clearly it was hurt, hurt beyond imagination. It had gave and gave and gave, only for its affection to never be reciprocated. Whoever did this to MR had turned it into what it was now, a bitter and broken mess. Who could do such an awful thing?!
As if it could read her thoughts, it spoke up.
"You know them too."
"I do..?"
"Yes. You give them the same amount of love and attention as I once did. You treat them with respect and kindness while others turn their back on them, as they rightfully should."
Split stared at it for a moment, surely it didn’t mean..? No! That’s impossible… Right?
"You’re not talking about..?"
"Your little detective friend? Unfortunately, I am…"
She felt her heart drop. No. That couldn’t be true! It had to be lying! Yeah. That’s right! It’s lying. She would never do such a thing. Sure she wasn’t always the most morally correct person, but to do that?! That’s too far. Not even Gnarpy was that cruel, and xe threatened everyone! Even Fleshcousin! But there was still sense of doubt that whispered in her head, its voice quiet yet loud enough to be heard.
`What if it’s not lying..?`
"Hard to believe isn’t it? I assume you have no intent on locating her now do you?"
"What..?"
"She’s here you know?"
"Right now?"
"Yes."
"… Can I talk to her?"
"I guess so. Continue going forward in the direction you were originally going. You’ll find her eventually."
Spilt looked behind her, tilting her head slightly.
"That’s all? She’s th-"
She turned back towards the stone, a quiet ‘oh’ escaping her mouth as she realized it was gone. How does a rock move that fast? Does it have legs or something? That’s a funny idea- Wait no no! She needed to get answers. No distractions.
She sighed as she continued forward, the questions that whirled in her head made her feel ill.
Is she actually the reason MR was who it was now? Did she actually break its heart? Why didn’t she tell her this earlier? Was she trying to hide her true self? Was she even who she thought she was?
The more Split thought, the more distraught she became. She was starting to believe that everything she knew about Bive, everything she cared for, everything she adored about her was a flat out lie. How stupid could she be? How naive was she?! She thought she finally found someone she could connect with, to spend time with, to love even.
Then the truth came and proved it all to a sick and twisted fantasy.
Eventually, she came across the paranoid detective. She seemed distressed, like usual but it seemed much more intense. Like she was expecting something. Like she was in immense danger. She seemed more jittery than ever.
As Split got closer, Bive soon took notice of her, seeming to calm down a little, a small grin even appearing on her face. However as she saw the hardened expression on the fruit-taur’s face, she tensed up once more, her grin slowly disappearing as she got closer.
"Split..?"
She paused a few feet in front of her, staring down at the detective before sighing. Bive tilted her head as she tried to read her face, why’d she look so upset? Did something happen
"Why?”
"Why what?"
"Why’d you do that to it?"
"Do what to who?"
"You know what I’m talking about!"
"Well, to be honest I really don’t."
Split bit back a harsh retort, forcing herself to remain calm.
"Why’d you just… abandon MR?"
Bive was completely taken aback. Firstly, how’d she even find out about her history with the stone. Secondly, who told her she abandoned her?! She never abandoned anyone! If anything she was abandoned! Well not really but that’s not the point!
"Aha… What?"
"Bive please tell me it’s a lie."
"You don’t believe it right? You don’t actually believe that do you?!"
"The more I think about it, the more believable it sounds!"
"It’s all a lie, I promise! Who even told you this? It’s obvious they’re trying to distract you from the real threat such as the clowns and snow so-"
"ENOUGH WITH YOUR CONSPIRACY THEORIES! STOP TRYING TO CHANGE THE SUBJECT!"
Bive was taken aback. Never had she heard Split so upset, and especially never at her. It hurt. It hurt a lot actually. Did she even know the actual story? Who tricked her like this?!
She tried to stammer out a response before Split just responded with a frustrated growl.
"Please just tell me the truth. Did you leave? Yes or no?!"
"It’s a much more complicated answer than that! That’s not fair!"
"So you do know it?!"
"Well! I didn’t say that!"
"Then what are you saying?!"
"That our connections are more complicated than that!"
"That sounds like you’re trying to tiptoe around the fact that you know MR."
"I- Well-! Just please!"
She watched as the fruit-taur sighed, turning her head to the side as she used her hand to rub the temples above her forehead.
"I may know it just a bit but-"
"But..?"
"I didn’t abandon it! I just left!"
"That does not make it sound any better…"
"Well I just-"
"We just aren’t on the best of terms because of previous events!.."
"I wonder why.."
It was like every answer that came out of her mouth wasn’t the right one. At this point Bive was beginning to panic. Apart from Split she had virtually no one else. Scratch that, she HAD no one else. Everyone else didn’t listen to her, they found her insane, they thought her truths were lies. She couldn’t lose Split, the mere thought of it scared her more than anything else.
"Look I dunno what they told you but it’s not true please! I promise!"
"It’s getting harder to believe you…"
Bive watched as Split took a step back, her panic growing into pure terror as she noticed the stone that had materialized beside her. Of course. Why hadn’t she realize it sooner? That dumb rock was the reason Split didn’t trust her, it was the reason she didn’t believe her. It lied to her and got her on its side. She hated MR, it was lying, cheating, skank that fed off of suffering.
But so far, it seemed as if it was winning this battle..
"Split, please! You can possibly believe it can you?! You-You don’t actually… Right?… RIGHT?!"
Split only stared at her, too upset to think of a response. The agonizing 'reality' had set in that the detective she once loved was a two-faced traitor. It hurt her too much to even think of it as she fought back tears.
The stone looked towards her, despite the permanent smile that graced its face, it seemed express some sort of empathy towards the fruit-taur. As if it knew how she felt, as if it had once been in her place.
It let out a quiet hum, signalling for Split to go of which she did without hesitation. Her paws heavy as she left the two alone…
Bive could only watch as she left, her own feet stuck in place, her mouth too dry to let out a pleading ‘stay’. Before she knew it, she was gone. Where? She had no idea, but she had disappeared past the horizon and could no longer be seen. She turned to the stone, watching as it gave her its sickening and mocking grin. How could something be so cruel? How could something be so vile?! How could something be so… cruel?
A wave of pure hatred and grief washed over her, the stone knew it too. It felt it coursing through her body, and it relished it. It fed off of such negativity, and right now? She was a gold mine…
"You… You stupid-! WHAT DO YOU WANT FROM ME?!"
The rock didn’t answer, just stared… Just stared as tears streamed down her face, just stared as she trembled with mental agony, just stared as she glowered at it with pure unfiltered hatred.
"WHY CAN’T YOU JUST LEAVE ME ALONE?! WHY DO YOU FOLLOW ME?!"
Her breathing was heavy and irregular as the stone answered her with a command.
"Drown… Let your suffering be the waves that kill you…"
The ground beneath her seemed to liquify as she fell straight through it, letting out a yelp as she splashed into the inky 'sea' beneath her. She had tried to swim back to the surface, despite her poor abilities, but it was futile as some sort of thin layer of invisible 'glass' blocked her escape. She held what little breath she had as she pushed at it.
She could see MR staring down at her, staring at her as she tried to break through. It’s mocking grin still gracing its face. It knew it had won but it wouldn’t indulge in its victory until it saw the realization in the detective’s eyes. Until it saw her realize she had lost.
She kicked and punched and clawed and scraped at the layer, fighting to escape as her lungs pleaded for air. Her chest felt as if it were on fire as she continued, her movements becoming weaker
Split would awaken from her sleep before groggily looking around. She was back in reality, back in the maze, back with her… Split looked down at the sleeping detective, a wave of guilty disgust washing over her as she realized she was leaning against her.
Bive felt herself getting tired, her limbs began aching as her actions became weaker and weaker
The fruit-taur nudged her off, not enough to wake her up to prevent an awkward and painful conversation.
The detective’s movements became slower before eventually stopping. Her body tired and aching as her chest continued to burn…
Split let out a sigh, getting up as she gathered her own belongings, despite not being much, and began leaving.
She gave the stone a glance, the sudden realization of defeat hitting her as she began to slowly sink. The 'water' was cold yet oddly comforting in a way, it quelled the fire in her chest. Bive couldn’t help but feel relaxed in its waves..
She avoided thumbtacks and coffee cups as she made her way out of Bive’s corner of the maze. Meeting Fleshy by pure coincidence due to accidentally bumping into it.
Her vision began to blur and her mind began to cloud. Bubbles escaping her mouth as she continued to sink down into the dark abyss.
Fleshy escorted her out of the maze, babbling random nonsense as it usually did while remaining upbeat and optimistic, not picking up her solemn attitude.
For once she felt at peace, no more running, no more fearing, just peace.. It was a nice feeling. The light around her had began to dim as she sank deeper and deeper.
She waved a polite goodbye to the fleshcousin as she made her way back to the elevator, pressing its button as she waited patiently.
She eventually hit the bottom, the light dim as she laid on the sand-like ground. The aching in her body had stopped. The fire in the chest had been quelled. All that was left was for her to close her weary eyes…
She heard the familiar and welcome ding of the elevator, her floppy ears lifting as she stepped into it. Mark and Wallter were there but paid no attention to her as they argued over wood and concrete. She placed a coin in the elevator’s slot and selected Splitsville. She needed some time to herself for now…

Pulse of Life Press 1st Anniversary - and an experiment!
It's been a whole year since I started this crazy artform! I can't believe it myself. The amount of books I've made in the past year has long since hit the double digits, and each and every one of them is incredibly important to me, flaws and all.
However, there was one book - my first book - that had more issues than the others, some that outright interfered with reading. Luckily I've been learning book repair at the same time as binding, but when I tried to fix some of the problems for Bernhardiner, it went...well... about as badly as it could.
What to do, then, with a ruined book? I didn't have enough decorative paper to completely redo the cover, with all the little dogs. But then I thought - why not leave the cover? I know how books work - I could pretty easily detach the whole case from the ruined textblock, make a new textblock, and just reuse the old case. It seemed like a sound experiment. Now, for the press's first anniversary, I have compiled most of the process under the cut, complete with pictures.
Please come along with me on this journey!
This was the beginning of the process, after having slooowly and carefully detached the endpapers of the textblock (right) from the case itself (left). You might remember this from my recent shitpost! To loosen the adhesive and separate the two parts without ruining either one, I initially slid a bonefolder into the hinge area of the case, and then switched to a thin little boi called a microspatula to slip through the glue not unlike a letter opener.
This did lead to some wear and tear on the boards of course, but it could have gone a lot worse. Most binders that I've learned from use a homemade wheat paste to attach case to textblock, but so far I have not been able to make it without the ingredients turning into an Oobleck-esque gelatin. Thus I use PVA glue, which is far stronger, and can lead to things like this. Still, not too bad. The case was successfully salvaged!
Before I describe and show off the redux, I just wanna share a couple of the errors and mistakes I made on the first textblock here, as I usually try and photograph my books with the least amount of flaws visible. Here we can see, firstly, that the glue job on the spine was shoddy at best; none of it really got quite between the individual signatures of the book, leading to weird gaps like that which compromise the stability of the book and show off the spine liner/mull, to my dismay.
In the other two pics you can see page numbers where they're definitely not supposed to be. Ah, MS Word, you son of a bitch and your terrible, terrible pagination settings. Took me months and months to learn how to paginate my books correctly, up until about my FINAGLC bind.
Not enough glue here on the pre-made endbands, either. It would sometimes fold under while reading, which wasn't super fun to see.
Finally, the botched repair that started this whole journey - I had attempted to fix one of the gaps between signatures (seen earlier) with some Japanese repair tissue, but ended up sticking these pages awkwardly together and fucked up that little top part there. A nightmare!
For all the above reasons, I actually decided to go back to my original typeset and revamp it. I've gotten some... teasing in my binding groups for the fact that my first few books were set in Times New Roman (which I actually find satisfying to read, thank you very much), which apparently gives off a sort of amateurish vibe. I've been experimenting with body fonts since, and the two I reliably use at the moment are usually Sylfaen (for shorter, smaller books) and Baskerville Old Face (for longer books). I switched it to Sylfaen here, and you can compare and contrast the results far down below.
Now, I'm not going to detail the entire bookmaking process here - just the interesting bits. If you want to learn how to make books, I highly suggest checking out @renegadepublishing's resources, as they're how I learned. But here we can see all the new signatures of the new edition nice and crisp and printed. In the second photo they've even been punched for sewing already!
At the co-op where I print and sew my textblocks, I often get to use real nipping presses like this bad boy right here. It's entirely metal (iron?) and way too heavy to lift. Between the two scrap papers peeking out is the new Bernhardiner!
But at home, this is my current set up:
Everyone, meet the eponymous Pulse of Life Press. POL Press, meet everyone.
A family member of mine made the wood part (obviously, a separate piece from the HS books) for me last Christmas, with no real knowledge of what a book press should look like at all. It's sort of a cross between what's known as a lying/finishing press and just some sort of regular old clamp. I line it with wax paper, stick the spine of the book in the center, tighten, and then cover the rest of the textblock with my trusty viz Homestuck books. It's a little MacGyver-y, but it's served me well.
This is the part where you glue the spine, attach the endpapers, and so forth.
For this redux, I decided to continue practicing making my own endbands instead of using the same pre-made ones I had for the first copy. These ones actually came out pretty darn well, if I do say so myself! They're the absolute neatest I've made them so far, and that's a relief. Obviously I still need work, but it's so lovely making them. <3
After this, I actually don't have a lot of pictures! It's basically just press, attach the spine liner and glue again, press again, casing in, and then...
Et voila!
Lookin' pretty good, if I do say so myself.
I didn't get exact duplicate photos of the original textblock's mistakes for a before/after, but you can probably just tell from these just how cleaned up the new one is. Rest assured those pesky out-of-place page numbers are long gone, and my spine gluing has gotten a lot better. I'm honestly just glad that it cased in so well - I was worried about that flaky board for a minute there!
And that's all. Thank you for coming with me on this little peek behind the scenes! Here's to many more books in the coming year - more to read, more to make, and more to write.
Cheers!

Things Best left ... ALONE (8)
--== Table of Contents ==--
Pyrrha yawned, and stretched, knocking the books she had in bed with her to the floor. She blinked and yawned again. She actually felt refreshed, and twisted about in her bed to sit up, with her legs dangling off the side. Pyrrha didn’t remember falling asleep, but it was obvious to her that she had. Looking out her windows, she noticed the sun was well on its way towards setting.
“I must have been more tired than I thought.” she commented as she yawned again, and turned her eyes to the jar on her desk. “I wish you hadn’t let me sleep so long, I have a lot of home…”
Pyrrha sat up straight, blinked and focused her attention on the jar. Her brow knitted for a few seconds before relaxing. Stretching, she prepared to stand up, pushing aside the thought of hearing such a soft whisper. There was no way she heard…
“I’m sorry, Pyr.”
She was alone in her dorm.
“Well, I need to get… “ Pyrrha stopped talking and looked at her desk, in utter confusion. “When? I couldn’t have? I was asleep…”
Sitting neatly on her desk was a small, neatly piled stack of about 6 pages. Picking up the first page, she studied the page. It was perfectly typed, and read just like how she would right. She sat on her chair, and quickly read through the remaining pages.
“This is the paper I need to write for Doctor Oobleck’s class… but how?” She leaned back in her chair, it was perfectly formatted, included the proper citations. There was no way. Pyrrha turned her focus on the jar. “Do you know how this happened?”
“Present… for you… sorry… for nightmare.” came that soft musical whisper.
Pyrrha shook her head rather roughly. No, this couldn’t be. There is NO way a jar would be answering her. She had already convinced herself that the changes in its glow were coincidence, nothing more. Taking a slow, relaxing breath, she turned her focus back to the paper and actually read it through completely.
It was in her style of writing. The word flow was exactly how she normally formats her prose. Setting down, the pages, she once again glanced at the jar. She bit her lip, she had to admit things had gotten a little strange ever since she had brought it into her room. She no longer felt alone.
“Well, I have other homework I should get done., before I return Blake and Yang’s books.” Pyrrha twisted about in her chair, and reached into her satchel, pulling out several worksheets and a couple of rather thin class text books. “What?!?”
Pyrrha scanned all the worksheets, they were all filled out, in her handwriting. Any long answers written perfectly in her voice. This wasn’t possible… there was no way she could have forgotten, having completed all her assignments. There was just no way.
(Image generated by perchance ai text-to-image)
With one of the sheets still clutched in her hand, her gaze fell, on the jar.
“Present… I help… forgive me.” once again that musical whisper dance past her ears.

[Musharna mail! Cw for major mortal injury, pokemon abuse, cults, religious trauma
A church. Well, what’s left of it. The ceiling seems to have exploded open. Floating above the church is Eternatus, Eternamaxxed and Mega Evolved, wreaking havoc while screaming in pain.
The Sword and Shield of Galar, Zacian and Zamazenta, are locked in cages on either side of the stage.
This place feels familiar, and not in a good way. Looking around at the pews, the shattered stained glass, the statues of clawed hands and Galarian legendaries, it fills you with dread.
Time skips a bit and you’re trying your best to remove the lock on Zamazenta’s cage, when suddenly
Searing pain, from your back spreading through to your front.
You look down to see the Rusted Blade, sticking straight out of you.
The sword is swiftly removed as you try to scream, but it comes out whispered, as screams usually do in dreams.
You look up to see a woman with curly short purple hair, a clawed hand necklace, glasses, and a long robe standing over you. She simply sighs, dropping the sword and walking out of view.
As the nightmare begins to fade, the floor seems to grow around you, sucking you in, like quicksand or perhaps oobleck. It covers you completely, and the dream ends when your eyes are covered.]
Jo shoots up in the middle of the night, gasping for air. They clutch their stomach, right where that wound would be. That wound that was never theirs In the first place.
That. Dream that shouldn't belong to them...
It suddenly occurs to them that this MUST be part of somethin' supernatural. Jo's never had anything to do with the heroes of galar, let alone eternatus...
First thing in the morning... They need to investigate.

By the end of the game you are getting like freshly caught krakens and something called "Shadow Oobleck" (?) is in a jar on your desk. When you go to check out the docks you realize that you are not at Generic-Island-Name, but at the home of nightmare horror creatures. From here there are multiple ending depending on how nice you were to the eldritch beings ranging from becoming an immortal cook who now lives on Eldritch Isle to getting torn into 579 billion pieces before being resurrected and torn apart again as entertainment for the common horrors to getting a free ride home. Including a secret ending in which after you land you dont even comment on the weirdness and no one thinks you notice and you just get to travel the world with your crew of eldritch abomination pirates.
Cooking horror game where you play as a cook working in the galley of a ship in the 1800s. There’s some kind of supernatural nautical horror story going on in the background but you barely notice this because you spend all day cooking in the galley.
#oh and the ship name should be cute and generic#like daisy or something#give it dating sim options for conversations#and have them stop at increasingly insane docks#i want this game fr#ghosts#demons#weird cat?#space creatures are scary but NASA saw something in the ocean that made them think space was the safer option#all im saying

Hey it’s me oobleck sans fan number 5. So I showed one of my friends “oobleck sans” and they instantly started shipping them with nightmare sans because “they’re gooey sanses”. So I wanna know, would their dynamic work or flop? (So I know what to tell them the next time I get the chance to talk with them)
I did make a ship name for 'em, it's Oblivion lol
And most likely it'll flop
But im not saying it shouldn't let your imagination run wild

Ooh... Such a pretty red gem... Wait, what? Oh! Right! Jaune's waking nightmare.
First off, once again, I am impressed by the amount of thought and detail you put into your ideas. It's good to have two brains thinking up ideas on this, and I suspect nothing terrible will come from two brains collaborating on a singular subject. Not like it's ever happened in either fiction or reality, right?
...Anyways, as for what's been presented.
Events
How the story would progress compared to the canon is obviously going to be wildly different since about 80% of the main cast from Volume 1 is dead. That's kinda how I went with Jaune going to the Forever Fall with Professor Goodwitch. No Ursa show up, but the Rapier Wasp does get a cameo, if only so Jaune can have a W. Thus far we've covered up to about... Episode 14? Wow! I forgot half the Volume was initiation and exposition. Still, that means The Stray and Black and White are up next, which means we should be seeing a certain, quirky android here soon.
Mountain Glenn is something I knew I'd have to address eventually, so it'll be interesting to see Jaune's interaction with the school trip. Especially since it's Doctor Oobleck chaperoning him. How exactly we go from them walking around the mountain to crashing a train full of White Fang into Vale, I haven't quite figured out, but we'll cross that bridge when we get there.
Thinking on it, the Mountain Glenn episode could technically be Jaune's moment of redemption. Think about it; Jaune is surrounded by Grimm on all sides, people are running and screaming all around, and Jaune is so deep in it that he has to fight his way out. So he does.
Characters
Will Jaune upgrade his weapon? Maybe. I haven't really thought on it. Mostly because when I think about Jaune upgrading his weapon, I think about that Chibi skit where he's just hammering away at his sword with a toy mallet. Gives me a giggle every time.
So far what I have for Penny is her sort of acting like a therapist for Jaune. Part of her programming is going to be empathy and CBT so Jaune doesn't feel uncomfortable talking about his trauma.
You know, I will admit that I don't really know how Sun is going to factor into this story. I mean, he appears in the same episode as Penny, but he just kinda runs off, comes back to hang with Blake, then fights with her against Torchwick on the docks. Actually, now that I think about it, I haven't thought about how to implement Torchwick and his gang either!
Last Survivor Au
I'm glad you're all enjoying this au but well I come here today to talk about more ideas I had and how the timeline of this universe might be going, So get ready in your chair or whatever you're doing and look at the moon and fall for this genjutsu.
Events:
Well, because of the deaths, many of the episodes that exist in volume 1 would not happen as they normally would, but they would be changed. A good example would be Jaunedice, which could address how Jaune is trying to improve and go through this trauma. Black and White may have the fastest events due to increased security in Vale.
Mountian Glenn's events could be different and I see two possibilities, No one will investigate and the robbery that Roman did is a complete success, Jaune Penny and Oobleck's will investigate the train and the criminal base, And if we follow this second route we can have maybe jaune vs neo (Happy noises silent knight fans)
If we follow the second route we will have the train crash in the middle of the city and the same events that happen in the canon universe would happen
Characters:
I see the characters in this universe as broken people who are trying to heal from psychological problems, can I see Jaune improving his weapons? Yes I can but for now he is more focused on improving his mental state and health.
I can see Jaune spending time with Penny teaching her things about how to be ''human'' like showing videos or comics that he likes. It would be something like older brother and younger sister.
I imagine that Sun and Jaune would be like Might Guy and Kakashi from Naruto, but if Sun and Neptune asked Jaune for a boys' night out he would refuse the request.
Well, these were the ideas I had today, I hope you all like them.
