05.05. 22:09 | Ilo Pisara vs Hc rasvamaksat 8 - 4
Ladies and gentlemen, gather 'round as I regale you with the tale of Ilo Pisara's latest conquest on ice—a spectacle so grand it made our previous encounters look like a toddler’s tea party. Our heroes vanquished Hc rasvamaksat with an 8-4 triumph that'll be sung about in hockey rinks for generations—or at least until next weekend. Teppo Winnipeg, oh what a sight! With defense as porous as Swiss cheese but offense blazing like he stole Prometheus’ fire—scoring twice and assisting four times. A puck-moving defenseman or our very own hockey deity? You decide. Sami Noddy swung his stick like Thor’s hammer, netting four goals while dishing out assists faster than my uncle at a family BBQ—all this despite playing defense like he was trying to make friends rather than stop plays. And let's not forget Jani Saari—the two-way forward who must've thought the puck was part of some loyalty program given how often it stuck by him. Two goals, five assists, and more hits than my favorite Spotify playlist. As we sail into future battles, remember: today we feasted on victory; tomorrow we hunt for glory once more. Onwards Ilo Pisara—to dazzle or disastrously delight in defeat!

Prompt #10: Homecomings
Prompt: Channel
Characters: Berude Eijinn, Cirina of the Mol Tribe, Ugdan Temulun of the Mol Tribe, Lyse Hext, Yugiri Mistwalker, Gosetsu
Content Warnings: Stormblood spoilers this time!
Author’s Notes: Nothing tonight. I’m fighting off a food coma from bbq chicken nachos.
Berude stood at the pass that would lead her to the Ruby Sea and parts unknown. The Steppe and the tribe at her back, she turned to see two women standing nearby - her younger sister in all but blood, Cirina, and their grandmother and tribe leader, Ugdan Temulun. Both bore gentle smiles, although Cirina’s was watery, weak, and she gripped her hands tightly to keep them from shaking.
This was the only life Berude had ever known, ever since her mother had fled when the Garleans arrived with weapons that spat fire and machines of death. A raen among the tribes stood out even more than the people of Doma who traded in Reunion. So when her mother returned to fight alongside her father, the Ugdan had blessed her with a new name - Berude of the Mol tribe. She barely remembered her parents now, a pair of blurry-faced raen faded with time. Nor did she remember the name her parents gave her. She was Berude, for it was the only name she ever knew.
Here, she learned to hunt, to skin, to tame horses, and the art of swordplay. She had friends here and considered Cirina and Temulun to be as close as she had to an actual family. But when the dreams of falling stars began, Temulun had called the young woman to her ger. “Yours is a rare gift, my dear,” she had said at the time. “A blessing from the land. This gift is one you must share, not for the betterment of our tribe, but for the Star itself.”
Which brought her here, to the entry of this mountain path. Impulse overtook her and she ran to her family, hugging Cirina tightly. “I do not wish to go, sister,” she whispered. She felt Cirina begin to sob and hugged her tighter. “But if it is what the spirits say, then you know I must.”
Sniffling softly, Cirina stepped back. “I know. Promise you will not forget us, Ru.”
Berude gave Cirina her own watery smile. “Never, Ciri.”
Temulun stepped forward and placed a hand on Berude’s shoulder. “Take these gifts, dear girl. Channel them into the Star you wish to see. The path will be long and it will not be easy, but you will always have a place here.” With those words, the Ugdan took Cirina by the shoulder and led her back to the tribe’s camp.
Taking a deep breath, Berude took her first step up the winding path to the port by the Ruby Sea.
-
Traveling through a dark cave network from Doma, Berude’s breath hitched when she caught sight of the green plains of the Azim Steppe. Behind her, Yugiri, Gosetsu, and Lyse stopped to rest their weary feet for a moment. Berude continued onward. The gray light of dawn was creeping ever higher, until the sky was suddenly painted with soft pinks and yellows, fading to lavenders and blues to herald the Dawnfather’s return.
She opened her arms wide and welcomed the touch of the sun and the cold winds blowing from the mountains on her skin. She was home once more, after nine long years. Had she done enough, she wondered. Would Temulun say she had channeled her gifts of the Echo and Blessing of Light well? She had saved Eorzea from the Garleans, Ascians, and dragons. She had ended wars, soothed ancient hates, and brought a formerly isolated nation back into the fold of the Grand Companies.
But was it enough?
Would it ever be enough?
Would the Star keep taking from her and never allow her a moment’s respite? She thought she had found peace once, and deeply loved the man who had brought it to her. Until he had been cruelly ripped away from her by a power-mad priest with delusions of godhood and his private guard.
“It’s beautiful here,” Lyse murmured from just behind her in awe. “I thought the Twelveswood was massive, but this…this is incredible!”
Berude nodded in agreement. “It is.” She inhaled deeply, the scent of earth and grass and beasts revitalizing her. “The Azim Steppe is wild, untamed, it is freedom in its truest form.”
Lyse’s reverence for the Steppe was just the reminder Berude needed to know she had channeled her gifts well. If she had never left, Garlemald would have eventually marched here and slaughtered the tribes. None of her friends among the Scions, whom she loved so dearly, would be alive. The Star would be as one nation, ruled by an iron fist under the ivory banner of tyrants.
And that she could not allow.
“Just a small piece of this land.” Yugiri had also recovered from their hasty escape and joined them, Gosetsu close behind. If we are to continue our search for Hien, we should begin at-.”
“Reunion.” Three sets of eyes trained on Berude and she shrugged. “I know these lands well. I will take us through the quickest route.” Together, the group set out for the small trading village.
The Azim Steppe was freedom, and she would see that freedom delivered to Gyr Abania and the rest of Othard. If Hydaelyn’s Blessing and the Echo failed, she resolved to channel her protective rage to beat the Garleans back. Not just for her friends, nor her tribe. For the Star and all who dwelled upon it.

You Make My Heart Skip A Beet

You Make My Heart Skip a Beet
Pairing: Steve Rogers x Bucky Barnes (Stucky)
Word count: 3.8k
Rating: Teen and Up
A/N: Based on this lovely prompt by @greyhoundsgirl. I have to be honest here, I’ve never actually seen Top Chef though so I thought it would be safer to make up a new fictional amateur cooking competition which I’ve titled Chef Wars :p
No warnings to speak of, apart from maybe for awful food puns, but it is a bit of a cracky piece, and it’s in Sam POV (poor guy). Hope you enjoy!! 💗 Huge thanks to the amazing @rainbowsandcoconut for brainstorming, food puns and awesome beta’ing, as usual 😘
Read on AO3
Summary:
“I made soda bread.”
Steve lets out the 6’2” supersoldier equivalent of a squeak. “Oh, I love soda bread,” he says eagerly, rolling forward on the balls of his feet like he does when he gets excited. “My mom used to make it all the time when I was growing up.”
The tips of Barnes’s ears turn red, and he mutters something that sounds suspiciously like, “I know.”
****************************
When Sam and Steve had first been approached about being guest judges on an Avengers-themed special of Chef Wars, they’d spent a full fifteen minutes jumping around the common room in the Tower like a pair of overgrown kids on a sugar high.
Guest judges. On Chef Wars.
It so happens that Sam and Steve watch Chef Wars religiously. In fact, Steve even mentioned this in passing in one or two of his more recent interviews when asked how Captain America likes to spend his downtime, which is probably how the show’s executives had thought to invite them in the first place.
Sam’s love for cooking and cooking shows was passed down to him by his mother Darlene, and he, in turn, passed it on to Captain America – though if you’d told ten-year-old Sam that, he would’ve thought you were nuts. Poor Steve isn’t exactly the culinary sort of guy himself, but once Sam started turning up on his doorstep three nights a week to keep him company and make sure he didn’t sink further into depression, he’d slowly started to enjoy the shows Sam insisted on watching with him. Sam figured the familiarity of the actions and the low stakes of an amateur cooking competition would be perfectly suited to someone trying to integrate into a new century, while still being just exciting enough to hold the attention of an adrenaline junkie like Steve.
And he was right. So now, every Thursday night, the two of them chill on Steve’s couch, yelling at the TV and pretending they‘d do a better job of it than the contestants. Which, to be fair, Sam probably would, but Steve decidedly would not. What Steve lacks in culinary skills, though, he more than makes up for with his crazy supersoldier metabolism, rivaled only by the Other Guy and sometimes Thor, once he’s cracked open the mead. Steve can eat, and he does so with relish.
So needless to say, when they got the invite, they’d both jumped at the chance. Who wouldn’t, when presented with the opportunity to do the thing they did every Thursday night for funsies, but this time for realsies? And after weeks of giddy anticipation, today is finally the day.
Filming day.
The whole thing had gotten off to an excellent start. The sun was shining, Steve had actually been whistling on their way to the studio instead of nervously drumming his fingers on the dashboard (something which got on Sam’s nerves like nothing else), and they’d been offered some quality Italian espresso when they arrived. The show got on the road as soon as they’d gotten a quick tour of the studio, and after lights, camera, action, the contestants were introduced one by one.
There is Bernadette, a Missouri housewife who turned out to be somewhat of a BBQ expert and who reminds Sam of his Aunt Jenna; there’s Bob, a big, burly dude from Kentucky who wouldn’t look amiss on a Pro Wrestling show but who ends up surprising them all with a surprisingly delicate edible flower-dish dedicated to his lovely wife; and Yulia, a tiny, fierce girl from Bulgaria with some mean knife skills who Sam suspects could very well be a distant relative of Natasha’s.
And then there’s Bucky Barnes.
Bucky Barnes is a thirty-one-year-old physical therapist from Brooklyn who’s looking to change careers and get into the restaurant business full time. He has that whole hipster vibe going on: long, meticulously conditioned chestnut hair in a messy top knot, designer stubble, sleeve of – admittedly awesome – tattoos on his left arm. His cool, blue eyes and sharp cheekbones give him a model-like appearance, and yet there’s something soft and disarming about him.
Steve certainly seems to think so, at least.
The moment Barnes came walking through those glass doors, Sam heard Steve suck in a sharp breath at his side. A quick glance at Steve’s slack-jawed expression told Sam all he needed to know, since the dude is about as subtle as a sledgehammer. He’d elbowed Steve in the side until he looked over and pretended to wipe some drool from the corner of his mouth. Steve’s eyes went wide as he hastily mirrored the movement, missing the joke by about fifty yards. Oh, boy.
From that moment onward, Steve’s brain seemed to have gone through a blender, turning it into a rainbow smoothie – which was pretty unfortunate, considering they were going to have to interact with the contestants in a way that was suitable for daytime television.
The thing is, Steve is not exactly what you’d call a people person at the best of times. He’s fine with someone he’s known for a while and feels comfortable with, but with strangers he’s just… a little awkward. Credit where credit’s due, Steve is one of the most loyal, sweet, funny and whip-smart guys Sam has ever known – and let’s not forget stubborn as hell – but he’s also very, very bad at social cues. It’s not his fault, of course. Steve had gone from growing up pretty isolated without any real friends to speak of, to suddenly spending years surrounded only by his army buddies, which wasn’t at all representative for how normal people interacted with each other (Sam knows this from experience).
While Steve’s many social faux-pas are an endless source of entertainment for Sam, he’s not a total asshole, and he has tried to help Steve practice his social skills. Unfortunately, giving him well-meaning advice like “just be yourself” seems to be a sure-fire way to ensure Steve will put his foot in his mouth somehow.
That’s why Steve prefers to put on his Cap persona for public interactions. When he’s Captain America instead of Steve Rogers, all he has to do is look commanding and sort of friendly and say bland things like “I’m very happy to be here” and “You did well, son” and no one would be any the wiser that beneath that righteous exterior, Steve was floundering and wondering when he could reasonably leave whatever social engagement Pepper had sweet-talked him into attending, and head home to the comfort of his armchair and his sketchbook.
For today’s engagement, Steve had wisely adopted this approach as well, and the fact that he was genuinely excited to be there helped to loosen him up a little – so really, it should’ve all been fine.
But then Bucky Barnes from Brooklyn walked into the room and turned his big, blue eyes in Steve’s direction, and Steve promptly seemed to forget who or what a Captain America even was.
So far, Steve has already missed his cue twice, and it’s taken Sam stepping on his toes to get him to focus. To be fair, though, Steve puts in a valiant effort to pull himself together, managing to ooh and aah in all the right places when talking to the other candidates – sheer dumb luck, if you ask Sam. But as Steve’s best friend and confidante, Sam sees right through it. He hasn’t missed the way Steve’s gaze keeps drifting in Barnes’ direction, and coupled with the blush creeping up the back of Steve’s neck whenever Barnes’s eyes meet his, it doesn’t take a genius to figure out that Cap has got himself a Manhattan-sized crush.
Now, most people probably aren’t aware that Captain America is also attracted to men, but Sam has a feeling that by the end of this episode, that cat will be most definitely out of the closet. Steve’s never purposely hid his sexuality; it was more of a question of it never having come up yet. It sure as hell has come up now.
And what makes this even better is that Barnes is just as bad. He stuttered his way through his introduction, very obviously starstruck at meeting Captain America, but also very obviously gay as hell for him, if the way his eyes lingered on Steve’s chest and thighs is any indication. Sam, for his part, is incredibly amused by it all. Not only does he get to be on the set of his favorite cooking show, he also gets to rib Steve, throwing in as many food puns as he possibly can – most of which go over Steve’s head because he’s too busy drooling over Barnes. Sam’s wit is wasted on his friends.
Then, it’s time to judge. In the first round, the contestants are supposed to make something which represents why they got into cooking in the first place.
Sam can feel Steve practically vibrate with nerves at his side as they walk up to Barnes’ station. Feeling magnanimous, Sam decides to have mercy on his muscly pal and take the lead on this one.
“Mr. Barnes,” he says, giving Barnes an encouraging smile. “Tell us about your dish, if you please.”
“Call me Bucky,” Barnes says, returning the gesture with a quick quirk of his lips.
Next to him, Steve repeats the name in a whisper, most likely unaware that he’s even doing it.
Sam has to bite down on the inside of his cheek to keep from smirking.
*****
Bucky’s confessional
“I grew up in Brooklyn, as the eldest of five kids. My dad left when I was fifteen, and while I was still in school, my mom had to work three jobs to provide for us all. She wasn’t home much, so it was kind of up to me to make sure dinner was on the table most nights.”
Bucky plucks at the seam of his black skinny jeans, lost in thought. “I think that’s why my specialty is comfort food. Nothing unnecessary, just hearty, nutritious food, y’know?” With a tilt of his head, he adds, “Although since all my siblings moved into their own places I’ve been cooking mostly for myself and my cat, so I’ve been experimenting with adding some twists to my tried and tested recipes.” He laughs, right hand clasping the back of his neck in a bashful gesture. “I’ve had… mixed success. Luckily Alpine has loved all of it. She’s my cat.”
“My first dish today is Irish soda bread with sage butter and Himalayan sea salt,” Bucky continues. “Bread was something we could never have enough of in our household. Five growing kids, y’know? And also, um...” A slight blush creeps its way onto Bucky’s cheeks, his eyes flitting around nervously. “Well, I guess you could say I used to be a bit of a history nerd growing up. I was super interested in World War II, particularly, uh, Captain America.” His blush deepens, spreading upwards from the neckline of his white t-shirt to the tips of his pierced ears.
“I, uh, I basically read every Steve Rogers biography I could get my hands on, which is why I learned to make things like soda bread because, y’know, Steve Rogers was Irish. Is Irish,” he corrects himself. Bucky’s eyes glaze over, taking on a faraway look. “Man, I couldn’t believe it when Cap was found a few years ago,” he marvels, “and alive. I don’t think I slept for a week after I found out.” He stares into space for a moment before shaking himself. He clears his throat, eyes refocusing on the person behind the camera. “Anyway, so when I heard that Chef Wars was doing an Avengers-themed special, I immediately applied because Steve – Cap, I mean- Captain America. Um. Yeah, so Cap mentioned in a few of his interviews that he watches Chef Wars, so I figured there would be a good chance he’d be watching this one too, you know? And then I got the email that I’d been selected and that he was going to be the one judging us, and I just…” Bucky trails off, looking a little faint, the blood draining from his face as quickly as it had risen.
“God, I just can’t believe I’ll finally get to see him in the flesh.” His eyes widen. “In person, I mean," he hastily amends. "And I’m excited about my dishes too, of course. I really hope Cap will like them. And the Falcon. Him, too. Yeah.”
*****
“I made soda bread.”
Steve lets out the 6’2” supersoldier equivalent of a squeak. “Oh, I love soda bread,” he says eagerly, rolling forward on the balls of his feet like he does when he gets excited. “My mom used to make it all the time when I was growing up.”
The tips of Barnes’s ears turn red, and he mutters something that sounds suspiciously like, “I know.”
When Steve puts a piece of bread into his mouth and chews slowly, he sniffs, eyes turning a little watery. “It tastes exactly like my mom’s,” he says in a hushed voice, sounding like he can’t quite believe his taste buds. Sam pats Steve’s back consolingly, before scooping up some sage butter with his own piece of bread and taking an enthusiastic bite.
“Hmm, nice,” he says, giving Barnes an appreciative nod. “And the butter? You make that yourself, too?”
“You butter believe it,” Barnes replies, then immediately looks horrified, like he can’t believe he made a pun that bad on national television.
Sam cackles, holding out his fist for Barnes to bump. When Barnes has recovered enough to return the gesture with his left hand, Steve stares longingly at their touching hands, before letting his gaze trail over the tattoos on Barnes’ exposed forearm. Since he's not exactly subtle about it, Barnes catches him looking and gives Steve a tentative smile when their eyes meet. Steve chokes on absolutely nothing and launches into an impromptu coughing fit. “Crumbs,” he wheezes, thumping a massive fist on his massive chest, “wrong pipe.”
Sam just smirks at him, before turning back to Barnes. “That was delicious,” he tells him. “Can’t wait for your next dish, man.”
“Really, really, good,” Steve chimes in once he’s caught his breath. “Well done, Bucky.”
Barnes goes as red as a tomato, eyes trained on the floor as he awkwardly shifts from foot to foot. “Thank you, Captain.”
“Steve, please,” Steve implores.
Barnes bites his lip, looking up at Steve through his lashes. “Thanks, Steve.”
Sam's pretty sure Steve stops breathing altogether right then. Christ, it’s like there’s an electrical current running between the two of them, the air crackling with it. Thunderbolts and lighting, very very nauseating.
Sam claps his hands. “Right,” he says loudly, “moving on to the next contestant now… Yulia, what have you prepared for us?”
*****
By the time the second round rolls around, Steve has had a series of meltdowns and Sam has spent precious time he could’ve been exploring the set and taking pics for his mom on talking Steve out of a bathroom stall. Damn, he’s a good friend. It takes all of Sam’s VA-honed therapist skills to convince Steve that he’s doing fine, he’s not embarrassing himself, and no one but Sam has noticed Steve’s massive heart boner for Barnes yet. Sam actually isn’t entirely positive about that last one – or the first two for that matter – but Steve doesn’t need to know that. There are still two rounds to go.
In the second round, contestants are asked to make a dish that represents who they are as a person.
While the contestants are cooking up a metaphorical storm, Sam and Steve walk around their stations to chat with everyone some more, camera crew on their heels. Steve manages to get out at least three complete sentences, and Bernadette and Bob are too in awe of him to notice the few times he says something that doesn’t actually make any sense. Yulia has given no indication that she even knows who either of them are, and Sam can practically feel the relief radiating off of Steve. He guesses that’s part of why he and Natasha get on so well.
When they round on Barnes’ station, Barnes has just started seasoning his dish. There’s a checkered dishcloth slung over his right shoulder and a focused look on his face, which turns into one of low-key stress the moment he spots Steve and Sam coming towards him. Leaning his hip against the counter, Sam settles in to watch Steve make a fool of himself. He's not disappointed.
“Wow,” Steve says inanely, gesturing in the direction of Barnes’ hands. “That’s- you’re- you’re really good at that.”
Barnes pauses his turning of the peppermill to give Steve a slightly panicked look. “At… grinding?”
At Steve’s strangled cough, Barnes seems to realize what he just said, his bewildered expression morphing into one of abject mortification. The poor guy looks like he’d very much like the ground to swallow him whole right about now.
Honestly, these two deserve each other.
When they've finished chatting to everyone and it’s time to taste, Barnes is asked to explain his dish and how it represents him. He seems to have pulled himself together somewhat since their last encounter, his stance a little more confident now and his eyes only drifting to Steve’s pecs every other sentence.
“I’m a simple guy,” he tells them, somehow managing to make it sound genuine instead of cliché. “I enjoy the little things in life. I like taking care of people, making them feel good and comfortable, and I think that’s reflected in my cooking. I enjoy making comfort food, the hale and hearty stuff.” He licks his lips, meaningfully adding, “Although, don’t get me wrong. I do indulge occasionally. I’ve got my guilty pleasures same as everyone else, y'know?” That last part is directed at Steve, who nods dazedly, like he knows exactly what Barnes means. Gross.
“So I guess you could say you’re just… arugula guy?” Sam grins, cheerfully ignoring the growing sexual tension.
Barnes stares at him for a beat, and then snorts. “You know what?” he says, returning Sam's grin, “the s’more I get to know you, the s’more I like you.”
Sam has a very real moment where he thinks he might actually fall in love with this guy himself. It’s only Steve’s doe-eyed look that keeps him from proposing to Barnes there and then. Okay, and maybe the fact that Barnes is clearly smitten with Steve, and also Sam is straight and very happily dating Nat, who would not hesitate to gut him if he decided to elope with some pasty hipster dude.
Barnes’ dish – mac and cheese with black truffle and locally sourced cheeses and fancy cuts of bacon – is mouthwateringly good, and Sam tells him as much. Using appropriate words to do so. You know, like a normal person.
Steve, on the other hand, moans loudly around his bite and then, mouth still full, he blurts, “That’s exactly what I thought you’d taste like.”
In the painfully awkward silence that follows, Steve and Barnes blush so hard the combined heat of their flaming cheeks could probably power most of New York City. This time, Sam can’t contain his laughter. He crows as he gleefully slaps his thighs, and even some of the crew is hiding having a hard time staying professional in the face of such blatant dumbassery.
Shaking his head, Sam grabs Steve by the bicep and herds him towards the backroom. “Come on, Casanova,” he says. “Let’s get you some ice for those burns.”
*****
For dessert, Barnes goes all out.
He actually makes Captain America cake pops, shaped and decorated like Steve’s shield with blue, red and white frosting. Steve’s eyes almost bug out of his head when he sees them. Barnes explains how they’re “sort of an adult version” of normal cake pops, which makes Sam raise an eyebrow. He’s been on the internet. He unfortunately has seen adult versions of all kinds of Captain America paraphernalia. Fortunately, Barnes just means that his cake pops have some sort of liquor in the center, “for a punch, you know?”
The starry-eyed look Steve gives Barnes clearly conveys just how clever he thinks that is, and Sam surreptitiously rolls his eyes. No game whatsoever, either of them.
“I’ve never had a cake pop before,” Steve says, carefully picking up one of the treats and inspecting it curiously.
“Oh,” Barnes says, blinking at him. “Well, normally you’d eat them in one go, but these are a bit bigger than usual because of the shape of the shield, so you probably won’t be able to fit -”
The rest of his sentence sort of peters off into a stunned silence as Steve proceeds to stick a whole-ass giant cake pop in his mouth in one go, letting out an appreciative grunt as he chews and then swallows.
Barnes’s mouth goes slack. “Oh my god,” he breathes, his eyes glazing over, and Sam cracks up. Again.
The cake pops are actually surprisingly good, despite their garish (sorry, Steve) appearance, and then it’s time to retreat and deliberate. As was to be expected, Steve has a crisis of conscience.
“I can’t vote for him just because he made my mom’s soda bread and he practically raised his baby sisters by himself and he cooks for his cat and he has pretty eyes, Sam!” he laments, voice muffled into his massive forearms. Sam makes the filming crew promise not to air this bit. It takes some doing, but finally Sam manages to convince Steve that Barnes’s food was simply the best. Better than all the rest. He even does a little Tina impression to get his point across, and that seems to do it.
When they announce the winner, Barnes smiles so wide it transforms his whole face and makes Steve melt into a puddle of Gü.
Sam has to nudge Steve again to get him to say his line, since he’s too busy mooning over Barnes to notice the autocue changing. “Ah, yes!” Steve says loudly. “First prize is a substantial sum of money, sponsored by Tony Stark, which we hope will go towards opening your own restaurant–"
“… and a weekend stay at Avengers Tower, also sponsored by Tony!”
Steve’s head whips around to him in surprise. Sam winks at him. “Including a private tour of the premises by none other than Captain America himself. Isn’t that right, Steven?”
A beat of silence, and then Steve.exe starts back up. "Right,” he nods, drawing out the word. “Yes. That’s right.” Sam pats his arm. Good man.
Stepping forward, Steve takes Barnes’ hand and shakes it slowly. “Congratulations, Bucky. I look forward to seeing you again soon," he says, adding, after a quick, bracing inhale, “and maybe when you visit, I can make my mom’s stew for you? If- if you like?”
Sam feels a surge of pride. Look at Steve go, being something almost in the vicinity of smooth.
Barnes laps it up, beaming at Steve. “I’d really love that,” he says in a low voice, still holding Steve's hand. “I’m sure you’re delicious.” His eyes widen. “It’s delicious. The stew – not- not-" Abruptly, Barnes stops babbling, then seems to come to a decision. “Oh, fuck it,” he mutters, and pulls Steve towards him, crashing their mouths together in a scorching kiss.
Over the noise of the assembled crowd's whoops and cheers, Sam gleefully calls, “And that, my friends, is a wrap!”

Note
The second half (which never got through) is just generally a shakespearean comedy of errors where Lan, Jiang and Jin cultivators keep showing up thinking they are needing to rescue LWJ or JYL and instead find a giant BBQ/tea-party thing happening. LWJ is bouncing A-Yuan on his knee and feeding WWX by hand. All the cultivators are like...Whaaaaaaat?!? And you would write it better (not that you have to) because I am not a writer.
Aaaaaah there we go. (first part)
Imagine if it’s JC himself that goes. His sister has suddenly gone to Burial Mounds without informing him? After she was visited by Lan Wangji? This is all very strange, and something can’t be right. And while he doesn’t assume that Wei Wuxian would ever hurt his sister, that’s still his sister they’re talking about. If anything happened to her... If WWX did anything weird to her... he could never forgive that.
So he arrives at Burial Mounds all ready to give WWX an earful, but instead, he finds JYL and an older woman, happily chatting in front of a big oven/grill/hearth/whatever, and are they currently exchanging recipes? And JYL looks up at JC and is like “Oh, what a delight to see you here! Sit down, the food will be ready soon, you have to join us!” And JC is like “excuse me for a second”.
He continues onwards looking for the one that caused this entire mess, but this whole village is mostly just farmers doing their jobs, a whole-ass lotus pond for some goddamn reason (on a mountain???) and he’s just steadily getting more confused. What the hell is WWX even doing here?? Is he a farmer now or what?
Finally, he hears laughter, and grumpily stomps into that direction. No doubt who that is going to be. He finally finds the miscreant. But... LWJ and WWX are seated on some cut timber or something, so close together that their arms and their legs are touching, and there is a small child seated on LWJ’s lap. WWX is currently teasing said small child, while LWJ looks on with a face JC would be hard-pressed NOT to call adoring... but he will not even admit to that under threat of death. It’s so fucking domestic he thinks his eyeballs are breaking. His brother is obviously in love and it’s just embarassing to watch.
He is eventually pulled away from the sight by Wen Qing, who’s just like “Leave those idiots alone, i think their stupidity is contagious and the last thing we want is another one of those.” She brings him back to where the food is currently being served, and seats him down next to Granny Wen.
Granny Wen first calls him “a very nice young man” and then proceeds to mercilessly grill him fror the remainder of the meal. At some point, JC is just like “I came here to save my sister, how did it end up like this” but then he sees his sister interacting with all these Wen people, happy and open, and there is real relief in JC’s heart.
This is not like Lanling Jin, he thinks, where every sentence spoken and every gesture made is calculated in a bid for political power. This place here simply allows people to be as they are. And his brother has built it.
He doesn’t know how he’s supposed to feel about that.

Standing in front of Tom’s door, you let out an uneasy sigh. It wasn’t supposed to be like this, and yet here you were, trying to gather the courage to knock on your boyfriend’s door to break up with him. Your heart was aching at the thought, but you knew you had to do it. The year that you had been with Tom had been the best year of your life, but something changed between the two of you in the last week. You were searching for a new job, not currently satisfied with your current one; and Tom was stressed over trying to get his roles and timing lined up properly so that he could afford to be home for big events, like birthdays and holidays. The past few days had seen meaningless bickering between the two of you, but it always ended at the end of the night when one of you apologized for their words and it was forgotten until the next miniscule fight. Yesterday though, it was different.
“What do you mean you applied for a job in Australia?” Tom asked, running a frustrated hand through his hair as he paced about the room.
“I mean I applied for a job in Australia. What part of that doesn’t make sense to you?” You huffed in annoyance. You knew you shouldn’t have told him that you were looking internationally for jobs- especially when you two had discussed moving in together in the future.
“The part where you leave me here when you move there!” He raised his voice, making you involuntarily flinch.
“I haven’t even gotten the job yet. And have you forgotten that you’re the one who leaves me for months? Your job keeps you away from me, how do you think I’m supposed to feel? I can’t ever bring a plus-one to a party or go on a double date with my friends because my boyfriend’s always gone. And when you are here, you don’t even want to go out in public.”
“You knew when we started dating that I’d have to be gone so don’t put this all on me and my job! When I’m gone, I can’t even enjoy my life, knowing that you’re here.”
“If I hold you back so damn much then why are you still with me?” You hadn’t meant to ask it, but you couldn’t stop yourself from letting the question out. When the angry Tom faltered as he tried to come up with a response, you felt your heart break. You lowered your voice and made way to grab your purse from the nightstand in his room. “If I get that job in Australia, I’m leaving.”
And with that, you left without another word. You managed to make it back to your place without crying, but once you were in the safety of your own bedroom, the tears fell freely and they didn’t stop for hours when you got the phone call you’d once been eagerly waiting for, the phone call you’d been dreading.
You got the job in Australia and you told them you’d take the position gladly. You had a couple weeks to pack up your life in England and move across the world, but first you had to end things with Tom. Neither of you had reached out since last night, neither of you wanted to think about your question and Tom’s lack of answer, neither of you wanted to admit that you really would leave Tom if you got the job.
Letting out another anxious breath, you knocked quietly on his door. You prayed he’d answer and not one of the other boys. You didn’t want to see anyone else, you barely wanted to see Tom. You knew this encounter couldn’t last long, you wouldn’t even dare to step inside the house. You were distraught, but you knew that going inside only meant you’d be going back to Tom for good, all plans of a breakup forgotten. When Tom answered the door, you felt your heart surge with sadness. With bags under his eyes and his hair a disheveled mess, he looked far worse than just upset- you didn’t want to think about how he most likely didn’t even sleep last night, a common occurrence if you two ever went to bed angry.
“Can we talk?” You asked quietly. He stepped back to let you inside and you shook your head. His already blank stare seemed to fall as he realized you didn’t want to go inside, didn’t want to be that close to him. Tom stepped out onto the front porch and wordlessly closed the door behind him. “I- um-“
“You don’t hold me back.” He said softly, his eyebrows furrowed in sorrow. “I was just stressed, and I shouldn’t have said that. I still love you, you’re my home.” He tried to take your hands in his, but you pulled back with a frown.
“But you did say it. We’ve said so many things in the past week that we say we don’t mean, but we still say them to begin with. If you didn’t think I was holding you back, you wouldn’t have said that. I can’t keep living like this, I can’t handle the arguments that we blame on stress when we both know there’s underlying factors to it.” You paused, nervously fiddling with your fingers. “I got the job in Australia, and I’m taking it. I love you, Tom, but I shouldn’t get in the way of your career, and, if you love me too, then you shouldn’t stop me from my career.”
“Y/N, please, don’t do this.” Tom pleaded, eyes filled with tears. “We can work it out. I- I’ll go with you.”
“You can’t. You have a career to focus on, and your whole life is here.”
“But you’re my whole life. I’d leave everything behind for you because you’re my everything, it’s always been you.” When he tried to hold you again, you let him. You let him embrace you, holding onto you tightly like you were his lifeline. You felt his tears landing on your shoulder as he whispered, “Don’t go. I love you.”
“I love you, too.” You told him sincerely, pulling back from his embrace. “But it’s over.” You took one last tearful look at him before rushing back to your car, leaving him there broken on the front porch.
“Who was it?” Harry called from the back patio as he heard Tom come back in through the front door. Tom stopped in the hallway, his tearful eyes scanning over the few pictures of you and him hanging on the wall intermixed with pictures of him and the boys and their families. He had forgotten his whole family was out back, waiting for him to return from answering the door, so that they could enjoy a family bbq.
“Tom?” Sam asked, getting up from his seat when his older brother still didn’t respond.
“Fuck!” Tom yelled from inside the house. The Holland clan in the backyard heard a loud series of crashing immediately following coming from the hallway, sending Harry and Sam rushing into the house to check on Tom.
“Oh god.” Harry halted in the entryway of the hallway.
“It’s bullshit!” Tom shouted, throwing another picture frame against the wall. As Harry tried to wrestle the last unbroken frame from Tom’s hands, mindful of the glass, Sam studied the scene and he felt his own heart ache as he realized Tom was only destroying the pictures of you. The twins both knew you and Tom were going through a rough patch, but they had thought it was getting better, at least Tom always made it sound that way.
“Tom, Tom, what the hell’s going on?” Harry questioned, still trying to pry the picture frame out of his older brother’s hand.
“Harry, stop!” Tom’s voice was hoarse as he tried to yell, but it came out as nothing more than just an angry croak.
“Harry,” Sam said, carefully picking up a broken picture of you. All three Holland boys knew that was Tom’s favorite picture of the two of you. Hell, it was his lockscreen, the first time ever it wasn’t Tessa. It was of you and Tom at the beach; you were sitting in his lap, smiling for Harry as he took the picture, but Tom had tickled you at the last second, making you let out a surprised squeal, which ended up making the picture that much better. It reminded Tom of the happy days of your relationship, and that’s why it was the first picture to be thrown at the wall and destroyed.
The last picture, the only one untouched, was you and Tom at the Onward premier just a few months ago. You were so proud of him for being in a Pixar movie, and he was so happy to have you by his side. Though he was standing with his brothers, he had been too busy staring at you as you laughed at something he said to realize that the press were still taking pictures. Your laugh was his favorite sound in the world, and he didn’t hear it enough recently.
Defeated, Tom let Harry take the picture out of his hands. He had destroyed every other picture frame with you in it, but destroying a picture of his brothers just because you were there? He couldn’t bring himself to go through with it. He sighed, “She broke up with me.”
“Really? Couldn’t tell.” Harry said sarcastically as he hung the picture back up on the wall.
“Wanna talk about it?” Sam asked and Tom sniffled his tears back, shaking his head. “Well, let me get you some shoes so you don’t step in any glass.”
Sam left for a moment and returned with shoes for Tom and Harry got out the dustpan and vacuum to clean up the shards. Tom made his way back out to his family, knowing they had heard his outburst.
“I’m sorry.” He mumbled, taking a seat next to his mum. His heart was heavy, and he knew he should’ve said those words to you.
~~~
It had been a year, and it had been the worst year of your life. The job was great, Australia was great, your life should’ve been great, except it wasn’t. You loved your job, Australia was treating you well, you had a few friends from work, your apartment was nice, but none of it felt like home. It took a year, but you finally wound up back in England. The company had an opening in England and you took the chance to get back to your old life, or at least get back to that life without Tom.
You had tried to move on, gone on a few dates here and there over the year, but none of them felt right. They weren’t Tom, and all you wanted was Tom. You hated to feel like one of those crazy ex-girlfriends, but you did keep up with his presence online, knowing which roles he had landed and which of his movies were coming out when- you told yourself it was so you could avoid watching those movies, but in all reality, you watched them anyway just to see his face again. You thought that you had missed him when he was away filming, but damn, you missed him now.
You missed those sweet reunions when he’d come home and those tearful goodbyes when you’d kiss like it was your last time. You missed talking on the phone to him as you planned out your next visit to him. You missed facetiming him on Fridays while you both put on the same movie so it felt like you had some sort of date night together. You missed his little sleepy smile that was your favorite thing to wake up to, the butterflies in your stomach when he’d tell you again and again how much he loved you. You missed spending time with his family- playing video games with Harry (which he always cheated on), cooking with Sam (which inevitably led to Tom coming into the kitchen, seeking attention from you and causing a food fight), helping Paddy out with his homework, laughing with Tom at one of Dom’s jokes so much that your sides hurt, cooing over Nikki’s scrapbooks of young Tom, and of course snuggling with Tessa.
You missed going to weekly pub quizzes with him, which is why you were currently at that very pub on your second night back. In a lone corner of the pub, you kept your head down as you tried to enjoy your lonely night. You knew coming back would just bring back the wave of memories that you wanted to forget. You could practically hear Tom cheering about winning the pub quiz, pulling you in for a passionately drunken victory kiss. But it wasn’t pub quiz night, and you knew that Tom wouldn’t be in the pub, even if he was in town, even if he stayed on the same routine like he had a year ago.
“Y/N?” Your heart dropped, hearing your name from an all too familiar voice. It may have been a year, but you’d recognize the voice of a Holland anywhere- or rather two Hollands. Putting on your most convincing smile, you looked up to meet the eyes of the twins.
“Harry, Sam! How have you been?” You asked, politely.
“Good. We didn’t know you were back.” Sam said as he and Harry took the two open bar stools next to you.
“Yeah, well, Australia kinda sucks when you don’t know anyone there.” You stated, acknowledging the alcohol in your system was probably making your words even more candid than you meant to. “I wasn’t expecting to ever come back, especially not this soon.”
A silence fell between you and the twins. It just about broke you; you were once so close to them, and they thought of you as the sister they never had. You wanted to ask about Tom, but you knew it was wrong. You left him, you broke his heart, not the other way around. You didn’t get the chance to ponder asking the burning question because Harry already answered it.
“He’s not doing well.” Harry spoke up and you could see the sadness behind his eyes. He offered you a weak smile, “He really misses you.”
“And he knows he messed up.” Sam added.
“It wasn’t just him, though. It was me as well.” You said softly. You bit your lip to hold back the tears that you could feel coming.
“Just talk to him.” Sam rested a comforting hand on your shoulder.
“I’ve got to go.” You pushed his hand off of you and made your way to the door.
“It’s not too late, Y/N.” You heard Harry call after you, but you left the pub anyway.
With a heavy heart and with tears streaming down your face, you let your feet carry you home. You paused when you reached your destination- it wasn’t your new apartment, it was Tom’s house, he was your home. It was dark outside but you could make out through the front window that he was in the kitchen. Just seeing his figure made your heart soar. So you were back to the same position as last year- nervously standing on his doorstep, working up the courage to speak to him. As you stood on his doormat, your footing felt uneasy like there was something under the mat.
Taking a step back off the mat, you crouched down already knowing what was wedged under the welcome mat. A small gold key lay on the ground, covered in dirt. You let out a soft sob at the sight. Tom had given you his spare key and you had given him yours but your apartment keys were too similar, so you came up with the doormat solution. He’d keep his spare key under the doormat for you and you’d keep yours under your doormat for him. It was a silly idea, especially considering that he was a famous actor, but you still had hopeful butterflies in your stomach from seeing that he’d left it there. Before you could put the mat back in its place, the door swung open and your gaze landed on the one and only Tom.
“You’re- you’re here.” He said softly. His brown eyes filled with the same sadness that was present the last time you left him. You quickly put the mat back and stood to his level.
“Yeah, I am.” You replied with a nod. Tom cleared his throat awkwardly, taking a moment to notice your tear-stained cheeks and red eyes appearance.
“Do you want to come in? I’ve got a kettle on.” He offered and you nodded. He stepped aside, letting you come in. He closed the door behind you and you followed him quietly into the kitchen. He swallowed down a lump in his throat, “How’s Australia?”
“Second worst stress-induced decision I’ve ever made.” You admitted, your lip quivering as you spoke. With tears in your eyes, you softly added, “Leaving you was the worst.”
Tom didn’t say anything, he just wrapped his arms around you and let you cry into his chest. You missed his loving embrace, too, how he’d hold you and make you feel so comforted, so safe. You weren’t sure how long you cried into his shirt, but you could feel his own silent tears landing on your shoulder.
“I’m sorry, for everything. I shouldn’t have left. I just miss you so much, and I thought that-”
“Hey,” Tom hushed you softly, pulling back to delicately cup your face in his hands, “I’m sorry, too. I just wanted you to come back.”
“I love you so much, Tom.”
“I love you, too.” He pulled you in for a gentle kiss. He wrapped his arms around your waist again, keeping you close to him. “I’ve got you now.”
BTS American Hustle Life Ep6
Ep 5 recap:
BTS are still in LA learning about hip hop. After their lyric challenge last episode, they had a little party (bbq) with Warren G to celebrate. Over dinner Warren G asked them if they got to spend much time with their friends and family and we learned the heart-breaking truth that they don’t and that it’s been 2 years since some of them have even been home.
The episode’s challenge was to shoot a music video and their task was to find some women to appear in the video. Cue some hilarious and cringeworthy moments as 7 terrified lads combed the streets trying to speak to the opposite sex. The filming was equally – if not more - hilarious to watch.
Onwards and upwards…
So they are still filming and straight away Jungkook is getting himself into some mischief. I laughed when the stylist hurried out yelping to get out of there because he doesn’t have a spare outfit.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Jungkook makes it back to solid ground and starts recording his self-cam again. ROFL at him running away squealing when one of the ladies plays up to his camera.
Now the ladies are in bikinis and sunbathing and the groups have to sit next to them and film. I almost couldn’t breathe from laughing especially when V, Jungkook and Suga walking away pretty swiftly after they’d finished; Jungkook saying he nearly *died* back there. And Suga grinning like he’d just been released from prison and saying he’s relieved it’s over. I really never expected Suga to be so nervous of women! He’s usually so chill.
Lol at the three of them watching Jin and J-Hope filming with the ladies (and acting fairly naturally) and Jungkook wondering how they can have fun like that as he thought his heart was going to explode and he’d die *crying with laughter emoji*
Tumblr media
 Ah, it was really no surprise that J-Hope won the challenge. He was the only one who had fun, could get within a foot of a women and not look two seconds from shitting himself LMAO.
His and Jin’s reward for being the winning team was a collectible figurine/model of their choice? Cool!
Tumblr media
Next day…
So Jin and J-Hopes next challenge is to find their beat box master but they have to beat box in the street to draw them out? I totally agree J-Hope, it’s utterly embarrassing. Yep, I had a little fast forward through that.
So they find their master, Fraahz and go back to his place where he goes through the basics of beat boxing with them. Their attempts are cute, although I think that microphone may need to be turned upside down to drain the spit ewwwwww looooooooooooooooooool.
Elsewhere, RM and Jimin’s task is to find their dance master – lol at RM’s pained reaction at having to dance again
Tumblr media
Oooooh they’re going to learn some bboying! Wow, Jimin picks it up pretty well – I always thought he was a good dancer (since he led the dance class in Carpool Karaoke) that’s why I was surprised that J-Hope was considered the band’s best. RM does a pretty good job too! They really are such a cute duo. It’s quite a unique friendship they have – hard to describe. Bet they’re knackered after that dance session though.
Yep! Well… RM is knackered.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
V(?) teasingly trying to wake him up and RM kicking his leg in retaliation. This band really do act like brothers. It’s like they’ve lived together since they were born.
Lol at Jin and J-Hope repeatedly bursting into giggles as they fail time and time again to get through their beat box and meditation practice.
******************************************
It’s the next morning  and RM and Jimin meet their dance teacher in the park for a little exercise (although they claim they didn’t know it was for exercise).
AHAHAHAHA RM almost dead after running a couple of laps. To be fair it’s probably scorching outside which won’t help. LMAO, the dance teacher putting the weight jacket on Jimin as the exercise was too easy for him. Poor Jimin and RM look absolutely floored by the end – I hope the walk back to the dorm isn’t too far for those tired little legs.
They’re back in the dance studio later on and poor RM get’s hit in the head by Jimin’s foot – aww. RM gets revenge by slapping a high five to Jimin’s hand/wrist extremely hard *crying with laughter emoji*. I love these lads so much <3 They are such characters.
Jin and J-Hope meet Fraahz again in the park to go over their beatboxing practice. I was impressed that they managed to get through the meditation without bursting into giggles. That part with them turning animal sounds into beats was hilarious.
******************************************** While the others are working with their masters V, Suga, and Jungkook are chilling at the dorm watching basketball and Jungkook is pretending to shoot people with a tablet… Lol, here comes Tony and N to spoil their fun! What are the three of them going to get? RnB!
Wait whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat?! Hold the **** phone. Did they just say they’ve never heard of Whoopi Goldberg????!!! I ain’t from the states either man but she is a l-e-g-e-n-d. These three lads need to sit down and watch Sister Act 1 and 2 STAT.
Tumblr media
Iris Stevenson, the woman Sister Act 2 is based on, is such an inspiration.
OMG they are going to get to do some gospel singing! *squeal*
Wow, Jungkook, you have such a nice voice <3 What an absolute cutie.
This was a great thing for the 3 of them to do. Not only was Iris’s happy and motherly soul something I think they desperately needed but, from what the lads were saying afterwards, I think musically it was important they learned how to feel love for singing again. The amount of practice they had to do as trainees – and no doubt still have to do - and the type of practice, as well as the stress of trying to ‘make it’ seems to have taken a lot of joy away from their art. And that is a real shame. If you don’t like what you’re doing, if your heart isn’t in it, then how can you possibly be happy? You certainly won’t be the best you can be!
Aww V has a wonderful voice for this kind of music too. But he’s not feeling well :( You need to rest up sweetie.
Iris is such a lovely and amazing woman.
Tumblr media
Go V and Suga bragging about how great Iris is <3 Wonderful lads.
Okay, so they are going to each show off what they’ve been learning and then score themselves out of 100 “fairly”. Why do I get the feeling that “fair” will be used very loosely lol.
J-Hope and Jin did well with beat boxing although I think Jimin and RM were a little harsh with giving them a score of 69. Bet that gets reciprocated when it’s their turn. Aaaaaaaaaaaaand I was right lol. RM did really well with the dancing thought, kudos to him.
Tumblr media
Next up it’s Suga, V, and Jungkook. Aww sweet Jimin getting up out his seat to hug V and tell him how much he loves his voice <3 <3 And ten seconds later he rigs the scoring so that he and RM are not last *facepalm*. At least he takes it back at the end and honestly gives them a score of 100 points. This means he and RM lose and the punishment is….
The winners get to smash the losers faces into a plate of whipped cream. LMAO. This I have got to see!!!
Oh Jungkook… <3
Tumblr media
“Oh delicious”
Tumblr media
But Tony’s “Welcome to America” in reply just killed me
Tumblr media
Ahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaaha
Tumblr media
Look at the happiness on Jungkook’s face *crying with laughter emoji*
Tumblr media
*dead*
Tumblr media
There are so many crude analogies that I could make here… Jungkook creaming Jimin’s face and them both loving it but I will… refrain.
LMAO RM flinging cream all over the place in retaliation.
Tumblr media
So we got to see the music video and it was quite good. I felt it wasn’t very polished though as there was a noticeable difference between the colouring/lighting between the car scenes and the scenes at the mansion that you wouldn’t expect/want in a professional MV. I really like the song though.
Final musings.
Another enjoyable episode. This one was both fun and funny. The boys have got great personalities and can make even silence seem interesting. They are a delight to watch and I’m so glad I’m still at the beginning of the journey <3
Two eps to go: Episode 7 up next…
Luang Prabang, Laos - Part 1
Day 161 – Chiang Mai, Thailand to Luang Prabang, Laos
In the afternoon, I packed up my bag and hailed a Red Songthaew to Chiang Mai’s airport, boarding a small, propeller plane that would take me to Luang Prabang, Laos. The flight was short, about an hour and a half east, over the mountainous green highlands. The air outside was thick and hazy, caused by smoke from burning farmer’s fields. I learned that between February-April, this was fairly common for northern Thailand and Laos, as farmers burn their fields before reseeding the soil.
Arriving at the small, red roofed airport in Luang Prabang, I quickly passed through customs, paying for my visa on arrival with US dollars. It was an interesting visa experience for me, as the visa application fee varied depending on the home country of the traveller – with Canadians paying the highest amount of any listed country. After doing some research after the fact, it appears that this is based on the reciprocal cost a Laotian would need to pay to visit Canada. Furthermore, the visa costs are also apparently related to the amount of international aid provided to Laos, where citizens of countries which have provided a higher level of aid pay lower visa costs as a result. I had not given much thought to the reciprocity of international visas before my arrival in Laos, and this was an eye-opening, educational experience for me.
As I was negotiating for a ride into town in the arrivals hall, I had the very good fortune of meeting a fellow traveller from San Francisco, Tonya, who was also travelling by herself. We quickly found out that we were also staying at the same guesthouse, and became immediate friends! Sharing a ride into town on a multi-coloured tuk-tuk, we also realized that we had a very similar itinerary planned around Asia for the coming few months! After settling into our hostel for the evening, we headed out into the town as the sun was setting.
Tumblr media
Luang Prabang
The small city of Luang Prabang is built on a peninsula at the confluence of the Mekong and Nam Khan Rivers, surrounded by lush green mountains. Now a UNESCO World Heritage site, Luang Prabang was once the capital of the historic Lane Xang Kingdom from the 14th to 16th centuries (also known as the “Kingdom of a Million Elephants”). Luang Prabang was also a historic trade centre in Southeast Asia, given its proximity to the meandering Mekong Rivier, which runs for almost 5,000 km through China, Myanmar, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam.
Luang Prabang is also known for being the centre for Buddhism in Laos, and has many active temples, or “Vats” scattered throughout the town centre. The town was part of a French protectorate between 1893 and 1954, and the colonial influences of this era can still be seen in the architecture throughout the urban centre. Modern day Luang Prabang showcases traditional and French colonial styles throughout the town. Given the current UNESCO protections, the historic town centre was also remarkably free of the overdevelopment that can come with tourism. It was evident to me that the town had taken great care to protect their cultural heritage and architecture, with conservation and sustainability in mind.
Tumblr media
Luang Prabang Night Market
As evening fell, Tonya and I wandered over a short distance to Sisavangvong Road, the main street through the peninsula, which was bustling with a vibrant night market.  The street had been closed off to vehicles and scooters, and there were hundreds of red and blue covered stalls and bamboo mats lining the street, selling countless beautiful and unique wares. There was an incredible collection of handicrafts, ceramics, silks, clothing, antiques and other souvenirs for sale. Many of the items sold were handmade by ethnic groups in the nearby hills, although some stalls also sold cheap, imported trinkets. Overall, the market had a relaxed atmosphere, with the vendors typically waiting for the visitor to inquire about the items rather than making sales pitches. One stall in particular caught my eye – where the trader was selling jewellery and cutlery which were apparently made by recycling fragments of bombs which had been dropped on Laos by the United States during the Vietnam War.
I had no previous knowledge of the bombing campaign in Laos during the war, and was stunned to learn that there were close to 600,000 bombing campaigns in Laos between 1964-1973, with the goal to cut off supply lines along the Ho Chi Minh Trail running into Vietnam. To this day, there are estimated to be almost 80 million unexploded bombs throughout the country, which continue to kill innocent men, women and children who happen to come upon them – near half a century later. It sickened me to think about all of the bombs lying dormant in fields and forests throughout this picturesque, welcoming country.
Tonya and I briefly stopped by a money exchange to switch out our US dollars to Laotian Kip. The local denominations were huge - with banknote amounts ranging between K500 to K100,000. For the remainder of my time in Laos, this made it quite challenging to monitor just how much money I had, as the many “zeros” on the banknotes automatically tricked my brain into thinking I had more money than I actually did!
One of the Many Fresh Smoothie Stands in the Market
We spent the remainder of the evening browsing the night market, sampling spicy Laotian dishes at the food stalls along the street, and enjoying passionfruit smoothies. It was a great first day in Laos, and I was lucky to have equally terrific company with Tonya!
Day 162 – Luang Prabang
After grabbing breakfast at our hostel and befriending a few other travellers, Tonya and I headed out to explore town, passing first through the morning farmer’s market just along the street outside. The vendors start setting up before sunrise, and it was already busy as we walked through around 8:30am. Local produce and the catch-of-the-day were set up for sale on mats on the ground. Ready-to-eat snacks were also for sale, such as charcoal-grilled honeycomb, baelfruit, mung-bean rice cakes, Mok Pa (a dish cooked with catfish caught in the Mekong), Lao Khao Soi, various meats cooked in banana leaf, Khao Jee Pate (a Laotian take on a Banh Mi Baguette sandwich) barbecued frog, water buffalo sausage, coconut milk pancakes, young coconuts, various noodle dishes, and even grilled rat – just to name a few snacks! We enjoyed stolling along the street, chatting with the friendly vendors, and taking in the vibrant colours, sights and smells of the market.
We continued onwards to the bank of the Mekong River, lined with palm and banana trees. Long, shallow river boats churned through the milky brown water below. Beyond the wide, lazy river, we could see lush green mountains in the distance. As we walked along the embankment, various tour operators approached us, trying to sell us tours in these slow riverboats. While we were certainly interested, Tonya and I had done our research on reputable tours, and planned to purchase our trip up the Mekong for the following day.
Drying Orange Robes in a Monastery in Luang Prabang
Turning inland, we began to meander along the quieter streets of town, lined with traditional Lao houses and guesthomes, many of which were constructed with bamboo materials during the colonial period. The UNESCO protections in the town continued to be evident, as there were no high-rise buildings or large tour buses anywhere in the town centre. Tuk-tuks and scooters were by far the most common means of transportation for locals and visitors. As we walked, we occasionally passed some active Buddhist monasteries, and while we could not enter, we could see the laundered orange robes of the monks hanging out to dry.
Tumblr media
Wat Xieng Thong
We visited one of the best-known monasteries in the town centre, Wat Xieng Thong. Dating back to the 16th century, the temple complex housed a gilded ordination hall, with large, sweeping roofs, along with numerous stupas, chapels, a library, a drum tower, and a funeral carriage - historically used to carry the urns of Lao royalty. The architecture throughout Wat Xieng Thong was simply stunning, with every structure richly decorated with engravings, colourful mosaics, paintings, gilding and elaborate sculptures.
Ready for some shade and bite to eat, Tonya and I headed to the banks of the Nam Khan River, crossing a bamboo footbridge to the far bank. The bamboo bridges of Luang Prabang are built by local families on an annual basis, facilitating the journey to and from the old quarter of the city. Incredibly, though these bridges are solely built from bamboo and rope, they are very sturdy! As visitors to Luang Prabang, Tonya and I paid a small toll to cross the bridge, which contributes to the upkeep and annual bridge replacement.
Bamboo Bridge across the Nam Khan River
On the far banks of the river, we arrived at Dyen Sabai  – a restaurant recommended by a friend of mine from Western, Brandon - who had briefly lived abroad in Laos, and had generously given me all sorts of local recommendations! He had highly recommended that I visit Dyen Sabai for their Lao Buffalo Fondue. The setting was peaceful – Tonya and I sat on low futons at a riverside table, surrounded by a beautiful bamboo garden. The buffalo fondue dish turned out to be cooked in a similar way to Chinese hot pot/Korean BBQ. The servers prepared a small charcoal fire in a metal container built into the table, before placing a specialized cover overtop. This set-up allowed Tonya and I to cook the meat ourselves on the grill and cook the vegetables in the broth. It was a delicious (and interactive!) meal, a recommendation well worth it.
After lunch, we traversed back over the bridge, and walked along the banks of the Nam Khan river to Utopia, a outdoor bar and bucket-list destination for any backpacker to the area (I think I had about 10 different friends recommend I go!). Tonya and I spent several hours of the late afternoon enjoying several Beer Lao while sitting on the floor cushions, chatting with other travellers and taking in the incredible ambiance of this lively riverside bar.
As evening began to fall, we returned to the town centre to climb Mount Phousi for sunset. A small mountain located in the heart of the historic town centre, Phou-si literally translates to “sacred hill”, and stands approximately 100m tall. While it was a bit of a climb to the top, I was happy for the exercise! Along the trail as we ascended were many gilded statues of Buddha, with a small temple and golden stupa at the summit. Arriving just on time for sunset, we took in an incredible 360-degree view of Luang Prabang, the Mekong River shimmering in a deep shade of orange, reflecting the mesmerizing sky above. The distant mountains were blanketed in a smoky haze from the burning of brush and farmers fields.  While the hill was packed with tourists who had the same idea as us – it was still a wonderful way to end a day of exploring the city. Ready to tuck into some more of Laos’ famous street food, Tonya and I returned to the night market along Sisavangvong Road, taking in the brightly lit red and blue booths framed by tall palm trees and the opulent Royal Palace. After sharing and sampling countless delicious dishes, we headed back to our hostel, stopping at a booth on the main road to purchase tickets for our boat trip up the Mekong River the following day. I crashed almost immediately, as I was planning to wake up before dawn to view the morning Almsgiving ceremony, a daily tradition of local Buddhist monks.
Manual processors by and large have a plastic body that isn't much solid. Notwithstanding, assuming you utilize the machine circumspectly and take appropriate support, it'll serve you for a significant long time. You can bolt your manual processor onto the ledge, and don't go in for a ton of room.
Then again, uncompromising electric pounding machines are typically made with aluminum and they accompany wonderful toughness. The metal edge will keep going you for quite a while and let you utilize the machine easily. We saw that numerous business grade crushing machines are made with cast aluminum that will last you a lifetime with legitimate consideration and upkeep.
Spending plan
The spending plan is a significant part of a wide range of buys. Electric meat processors cost more contrasted with manual ones. In this article, we have recorded the best pounding models in the market with various sticker prices so everybody can get the best inside their spending limit.
Size
Granulating machines come in different sizes. Before you settle on your ideal alternative, settle on the sum you need to pound. There's no point getting an unreasonably enormous or little crushing model as that will make a problem rather than accommodation.
The size of the processor shifts with the size of the plates. Additionally, more modest processors have a more modest taking care of chute and they're more viable with home use. Assuming you need to get a processor for proficient use, do get the one with an enormous taking care of chute so you can crush a great deal of meat in a brief timeframe.
Cutting edges
It's essential to keep the cutting edges sharp as they help to pound the meat appropriately. At the point when you're utilizing the crushing machine, you need to deal with the sharp edge with care to guarantee wellbeing for yourself and the processor.
Abstain from scouring the forefronts and the granulating plate together as that will make the edge dull with time. Clean the sharp edges altogether in the wake of crushing them and dry them prior to putting away them.
Proposed Use
Perhaps the most amazing determinations that you ought to consider prior to purchasing the meat processor is its proposed use. Whenever you have settled on the financial plan, it's an ideal opportunity to sort out your expected use for it. In case you're intending to purchase the processor for home use or to utilize it on occasion at that point getting a colossal costly processor won't be an insightful decision. The paper towels would not prevail to exude from one side to another, instead of retaining fat and oil extras behind.
Assuming you're wanting to get the processor for proficient use, get a processor that can withstand some weighty beating and ready to pound an adequate measure of meat routinely. We have painstakingly picked the granulating machines that can oblige everybody's requirements.
Accessible Space
You ought to guarantee the measure of free space you have in the kitchen is adequate to hold the processor. Assuming you have less space on the kitchen counter, a huge crushing machine will be an absolute aggravation as it'll be difficult to utilize the machine on restricted space. Notwithstanding, assuming you have a wealth of room in the kitchen, you may settle on the bigger variations as you'll have the option to utilize it there with no issue.
At the point when the processor won't be being used, store it securely in the kitchen cupboard or the storeroom. Manual meat processors are altogether more modest in size contrasted with electric ones. Assuming you have tight dividing issues in the kitchen, ensure you get a model that is reasonable for the accessible kitchen space.
Level 3: Fancy some Barbie, mate?
Well, not the Barbie you are thinking, of course. In Australia, Barbie is the term used for BBQ. Anyway, hope you all have been doing great and welcome to level 3 where you are about to see a lot of different BBQ talk.
Before I get into the meaty business, let me catch you all up on some life stories. So, as you know it, the Aussie Experience is a roller-coaster ride. It’s super exciting with so much going in Sydney, like beach walks, downtown visits, bar crawls, making new friends and adjusting to the lifestyle here but it is a challenge to balance all of that with academics. And, with the likes of my circuits and telecommunications class, it’s not a breeze because the class meets all 5 days a week, unlike most other classes which meet 2-3 times a week. Most of the day time has been spent on campus in last 3 weeks and I get the chance of sightseeing mostly at evening and night. Places in Sydney start closing 6pm onwards, however, the 8pm late sunset does allow you to do more. Although, I am almost done with the summer course (survived the midterm - did I though?) and only 2 more weeks of circuits hopefully before we get our one week break between semesters. Definitely looking forward to that!
As I have mentioned before, Sydney is expensive and so is the public transport here. On top of that, exchange students don’t get student discounts on transport which doesn’t make it any better. So I used some life hacks and bought a bike from Gumtree (basically Australia’s Craigslist) to get to class and save some costs of using the bus every single day. Also, been using it to explore the city and hey, it’s a great workout too because most roads are steep. Perfect - got two birds in one stone!
Tumblr media
The stunning panoramic view of Sydney Cricket Ground
How could we not talk about cricket here? The Australian cricket team is regarded one of the most successful in the world with 5 cricket World Cups under their belt. One of the highlights of last week was to catch live action of the Australian domestic cricket league, Big Bash Live (BBL), at the Sydney Cricket Ground. It was a thrilling match between Melbourne Stars, the favorites and table-toppers of BBL, and Sydney Sixers, the home team and underdogs. It was a great day to be there as the Sixers came out strong with a shocking home win over Melbourne. The sweet Sydney-Melbourne rivalry was honored with energetic cheers from the home crowd as their team climbed up to 2nd place on the table. What a moment!
Tumblr media
Embracing the Sydney Sixers spirit with my friend and AirBnB host
Now let’s get down to the Barbie, mate. After the midterm, few classmates and I decided to celebrate the occasion. The celebrations kicked off with going for lawn bowling and then barbie at a friend’s place. Lawn bowling is outdoor styled bowling, different from the indoor pin bowling which is the more popular version. As opposed to aiming for striking down all pins in indoor bowling, you aim to get your bowl as close as possible to the Jack which is set at a certain distance and point at the beginning of the game. It might sound easy, but different weight distribution on both sides of the bowl really makes it a deal of swirling your wrist perfectly so the ball turns at the right time - and doesn’t end in the gutter haha. Lawn bowling with freshly brewed tap beers is a go to activity for old and retired Australian people in the summer!
Tumblr media
Posing like true Lawn Bowling champions..
After the bowling session, we headed over to our mate’s place. Aussie BBQ is essentially a soft white bread with ketchup spread over it and topped with a grilled sausage of your choice of meat. Simple good ol’ shrimp on the Barbie mate. However, I tried the grilled chicken kebab wrap with the Greek tzatziki sauce, which is the version for chicken lovers. Aussie people are very hospitable and it was great to be a part of that.
The next day, I woke up to an invitation for another barbie. This time, with my house mates, as a farewell for our Brazilian friend who was leaving for Brazil next week. It was a Brazilian style barbie by the beach with all kinds of meat and Farofa, a Brazilian delicacy to have with grilled meat. It was the first time I was engaging in a barbie by the beach and it was an absolutely wholesome time bonding with more people in my sharehouse.
Delicious home-made Garlic Bread and Chicken on the grill at Coogee Beach
Next up was the impatience for long weekend of Australia Day, which was coming up on Sunday. Since it was a very eventful weekend filled with celebrations and exploration I will give you a detailed view of it next week and not pack this dedicated barbie post with any more info. Until then, I have a message for you...
Is this a hint for Level 4? We shall find out.
I have a question about SC&BBQ. When you mentioned Sue, you said the reader saw her in a new light. Yet I don’t quite understand why. The friendship drifting apart seems to be more on Strawberry, as she is the one who isn’t responding to Sue, particularly after her boyfriend cheated and neither her nor Hoseok comforted her for a while. I would just like to know if you’ve made it clear why we see her in a new light and how that relates to their friendship declining.
Be prepared for a slightly long answer.
Okay, so we’ve established that Sue and Strawberry have been friends for a very long time at this point in story, there have been points in the story where it’s been hinted at the reader, (Strawberry) has been there more for Sue then Sue has been for the reader but they’ve always been friends.
Obviously both characters are in college and friendships do tend to drift apart or aren’t as close as they once had been. For example, in Part 5, the reader (Strawberry) mentions how whenever she went through a breakup, Sue would give her a call, (she’d sometimes actually go see her but mostly would call) but it would be Hoseok who actually went over to comfort the reader.
I’m really glad that you pointed out the texts and who’s responding to who. To state the obvious point, (there are many) there is a major time difference between the US where the reader and Hoseok are and Hong Kong where Sue is studying abroad, and then there’s factoring in jobs, classes and so they can’t be texting each other constantly or every single day. But it’s in Parts 11 and 12 that things start shifting.
Since Part 11 and 12 take place in the same day, we can see that Sue messages both the reader and Hoseok, but in completely different tones. With the reader, she’s friendly and apologizes for not texting because she’s been busy, but with Hoseok that’s when things change. She sends him multiple texts within a few minutes almost demanding a response before changing her mind, which leads to the reader noticing something that something is not quite right, especially since she had just texted her earlier that day.
It’s not the reader or Hoseok who purposely stop texting Sue. Again, they all have their lives and jobs, but it’s Sue that has stopped texting them, that’s why when the reader gets the phone call from Sue she’s happy to hear from her friend. In Part 16, the reader even points out that Sue just called when Sue makes the comment of them forgetting how to use their phones. Now, if you remember in Part 15, the reader had no idea who was calling Hoseok while they were being intimate with each other. Hoseok didn’t even know that it was Sue calling either because he never really checked it before turning it off and didn’t find out until later, and even then he doesn’t tell her because he doesn’t want the reader to worry about it. But by then when Hoseok does try to call Sue back afterwards, she’s not answering his calls or texts until the last chance, and then she lashes out on him without even mentioning that she broke up with Colin. They aren’t able to comfort Sue about the breakup because Sue is taking any hurt that she’s feeling, out on Hoseok and the reader.
From this point onward, any texts coming from Sue, are more strained, clingy, rude, and demanding. The reason why the reader (Strawberry) says that it’s like she’s seeing Sue in a new light, is because in their entire friendship, she has never seen Sue act like this before, which is reinforced when Hoseok even reflects back on Sue’s texts in Part 16 and makes the comparison that she’s acting more like Colin. Ultimately, the reason that Hoseok and the reader are slowing down in their responses with Sue, is because they’re nervous and worried. Sue owns Hoseok, and they had been wanting to tell Sue that they were mates in person when she came back, but now that they know she and Colin broke up, to them it seems like a dick move to suddenly drop the news that they’re together when she broke up with Colin. There are a few more points where Sue texts them, but it’s in the most recent part that the reader reflects on how Sue had spammed them both with texts during Hoseok’s heat, (a time where neither of them could really sit down and respond to every single text the Sue sends them).
The reason why they’re worried however, (I don’t want to go into too much explanation of this part because I will be diving further into this with the remaining parts) is that now that Hoseok and the reader have mated, (she has the mate mark) in the hybrid world they’re married, but because Sue is Hoseok’s owner and not the reader, Sue still has legal rights over Hoseok, and can remove him from the reader if she wants to and the law will be on her side and not the reader’s. Because of that, they’re just trying to keep their distance, and not make Sue anymore angry/upset.
I hope this longish explanation helps, and I promise that we will be seeing more interactions with Sue in the remaining Parts. There is still so much happening that hasn’t even been touched on yet and I don’t want to ruin anything for anyone just yet. If you’re still confused, definitely let me know and I can try to explain so more to help.
Hanami Season
March 21st onwards
When the Sakura is out in Japan there is a party atmosphere as Japanese families, couples, salary men stop for beeru, nigiri picnics and insta moments beneath cherry blossom hues. There is a media frenzy from January when the projected blossom forecasts come out. In mid-March, the tv crews are about in the top hanami sites looking for the magic number of five open blossoms on a designated tree. This signals the official start to the season in Japan. Good merch is available in the shops, the travel agents suggest weekends away to get your pink blossom fill and photographers make good business snapping up next year calendar shots and wedding couple pictures.
Tumblr media
Our first glimpse of the Sakura this year was in Kagoshima on the Southern island of Kyushu. Pink is the usual cherry tree colour so the white against the moody greys of the sea and sky were an attractive contrast. The rain drops on the fleeting blossoms are a truly ephemeral moment of nature.
This highly managed `natural phenomenom` attracts many international visitors. This year we hosted two sets. The first arrivals were Susannah and Alvin, a little premature for the Nagoya and more centrally located blossoms, so we headed to Kyoto to check out the historical sights.
Tumblr media
The first stop of the day on this version of `Tamsin’s Kyoto Tour` was the world famous Kinkakuji or Golden Temple. This tourist site is always packed and we joined the extensive queue to enter early before it was even open. Once inside we dutifully took our pictures walked the trails around the `tranquil` location and indulged in green tea and Kinkakuji themed sweets.
The sites history dates back to 1397. The temple narrowly avoided destruction during the Onin war between 1467-1477 when all the surrounding buildings were destroyed by fire. However after surviving for over 500 years including through the bombings of world war 2, that claimed a lot of Japan’s historical monuments, Kinkakuji finally succumbed when a `crazed` novice monk decided to burn it to the ground in 1950.
Tumblr media
Ginkakuji was the next stop on our Kyoto tour. The Silver Temple is located across the other side of the city and marks the beginning of the Philosophers Path. The temple buildings perch in front of the mossy hillside garden, whose paths meander through the towering pines. At different viewpoints from above the cityscape of Kyoto, ponds, gravelled zen gardens and the somewhat dowdy Pavilion appear in the foreground.
Ginkakuji was built by the grandson of the Shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu who was responsible for the construction of Kinkakuji. It was supposed to be covered in silver leaf when finished, hence the name, but by the time of its owners death, it was still unfinished so was purposefully left incomplete. This was in keeping with the Wasi-Sabi artisitic movement that is centred on transcience and imperfection.
Tumblr media
We did manage to find the odd early blossoming tree but most buds were tightly closed. Our final stop on the rather lengthy trail was Nanzenji. The most impressive part of the temple complex was the massive Sanmon entrance gate. The gate was apparently built in 1628 to honour the Tokugawa clan soldiers who died in the siege of Osaka Castle in 1615. The vistas across the grounds and Kyoto were very impressive (and a great spot for a quick selfie.)
It was great to extend the tour itinerary to include the Philosopher’s Path; however, it can take time away from other potential landmarks. The feedback from the Tamsin’s tour participants was it was a bit far and not enough places to sit down!
A few days after the Kyoto trip we were joined by other Trowbridge travellers - my parents. Finally the blossom was starting to appear en mass so we headed to Tsurama Park in Nagoya to get involved with the blue tarp action of a hanami party beneath the trees.
Tumblr media
Mum was ready in her matching pink attire to get the perfect Sakura photos. The sun shone and we ate some lovely cheese tartlets and drank hot canned tea and coffee. Making the most of the somewhat unpredictable March weather. We then headed for another well known Nagoya Cherry Blossom spot - Yamazaki River. Again, it was not quite full bloom yet but this meant it was not too crowded and we could enjoy the peaceful one kilometre stroll along the river.
Tumblr media
The next day was miserably rainy. As it was Saturday, Rob joined our group and we headed up to 31st floor of Mum and Dad’s hotel for a picturesque breakfast.
Tumblr media
This pic of Susannah is taken in what has to be the most scenic ladies toilet ever. Having missed the hanami party the previous day, Rob was keen to get in on the Sakura photos (this one is courtesy of the fake display in the hotel lobby).
After a wander around Osu kannon, we found the Puffle and waffy cafe for an afternoon snack. At this point the group split to accommodate varying tastes. Rob took Alvin Record store shopping and on a Kirin tasting session. Meanwhile, the rest of us headed top the Tokagawa Museum. The blossom outside the museum was in glorious full bloom. This was marred somewhat by the continuous rain. We spent some time taking pics then mooched around looking at the museum’s collection.
In the evening we decided to indulge our inner carnivores and to bbq some meat at a yakiniku restaurant.
The following day was Alvin and Susannah’s last. We got a quick trip in to the Shinkansen museum. It’s a great interactive space with so much information. Mum was pleased as she got to see Mount Fuji from the window of a bullet train (kind of), and there are lots of amazing displays and exhibits, but I personally loved the fact that the toilets were styled like a shinkansen’s; small things...
