https://www.reuters.com/world/uk/uks-starmer-hold-emergency-meeting-riots-intensify-2024-08-05/
LONDON, Aug 5 (Reuters) - British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said violent protesters who had targeted Muslim communities would swiftly face the "full force of the law" as he sought to quell days of anti-immigration rioting.
The fatal stabbing of three young girls in the northwest English town of Southport last week has been seized on by anti-immigrant and anti-Muslim groups, with disinformation spread online and amplified by high-profile far-right figures to spark disorder in towns and cities.
"Whatever the apparent motivation, this is not protest, it is pure violence and we will not tolerate attacks on mosques or our Muslim communities," Starmer said on Monday after an emergency meeting with police and prison chiefs.
"The full force of law will be visited on all those who are identified as having taken part."
Police chiefs said they had arrested 378 people since the start of the unrest and warned of "lengthy prison terms" for those found guilty of violent disorder.
The violence erupted last Tuesday after social media posts said the suspected attacker in Southport was a radical Islamist who had just arrived in Britain and was known to intelligence services.
Police say the 17-year-old suspect was born in Britain and they are not treating it as a terrorist incident. The suspect's parents had moved to Britain from Rwanda.
Interior minister Yvette Cooper said rioters had felt "emboldened ... to stir up racial hatred" and that the protests were not a proportionate response to concerns about near-record levels of immigration.
"Reasonable people ... do not pick up bricks and throw them at the police," she said.
Protests, mostly involving a few hundred people, have continued across the country, with shops looted and mosques and Asian-owned businesses attacked. Cars have been set on fire and some unverified videos on social media have shown ethnic minorities being beaten up.
Australia and Nigeria were among countries to issue warnings on Monday to citizens resident in or travelling to Britain.
On Monday evening, protests spread to Plymouth in southwest England. Several hundred anti-immigration protesters wearing English and British flags faced off against a greater number of counter-protesters, kept apart by police in riot gear.
Protesters threw bricks and fireworks and scuffled with police. Sky News said three police officers were injured.
In Rotherham, northern England, protesters on Sunday tried to break into a hotel that housed asylum seekers in what Starmer called an act of "far-right thuggery", following protests on Saturday in other English cities and in Belfast.
Starmer said a "standing army" of specialist police officers would tackle outbreaks of violence where needed.
Northern Ireland's assembly will end its summer break a day early to discuss the violence.
POLICE BLAME ONLINE DISINFORMATION
Police have blamed online disinformation, amplified by high-profile figures for driving the violence.
Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, known by the pseudonym Tommy Robinson and previously the leader of the defunct anti-Islam English Defence League, has been blamed by media for spreading misinformation to his 875,000 followers on X.
"They are lying to you all," Yaxley-Lennon said. "Attempting to turn the nation against me. I need you, you are my voice."
Elon Musk, the owner of X, also weighed in. Responding to a post on X that blamed mass migration and open borders for the disorder in Britain, he wrote: "Civil war is inevitable."
Starmer's spokesperson said there was "no justification" for Musk's comment. Musk later criticised Starmer for a post on X which identified mosques as needing particular protection.
In Whitechapel in London, lawyer M. A. Gani, 33, said the British Bangladeshi community was "living in fear".
"We've never seen this kind of far-right groups (being so) active and anti-immigrant," he said.
"I hope that the UK (government) will take initiative to calm down the situation."
Britain's technology minister, Peter Kyle, met representatives of social media platforms including X to remind them of their responsibility to stop the spread of racial hate and incitement to violence.
"There is a significant amount of content circulating that platforms need to be dealing with at pace," he said.

Interest rates: Bank of England governor admits rise painful for many

By Daniel Thomas, Nick Edser & Faisal Islam
Business reporters and economics editor, BBC News
Interest rates have risen by more than expected in a shock move as the Bank of England battles to slow soaring prices.
The Bank raised rates to 5% from 4.5%, the highest level in 15 years. Most analysts had expected a smaller rise.
“I understand the difficulty and the pain that causes for many people,” Bank of England governor Andrew Bailey said.
The move will lead to higher repayments for people with loans and many mortgage holders, but it should benefit savers if the rise is passed on.
Mr Bailey said that if the Bank did not raise rates now, “it could be worse later”.
“Many people with mortgages or loans will be understandably worried about what this means for them… but inflation is still too high and we’ve got to deal with it,” he added.
He warned that to get inflation lower, wage rises “cannot continue” at the rate they have been.
But he denied the Bank was trying to cause a fresh slump by putting up rates so sharply.
Nevertheless, mortgage rates have soared over the last year and a half:
The average two-year fixed residential mortgage now stands at 6.19% while the five-year rate is 5.82%. In June last year, those rates were closer to 3%.
Those on a typical tracker mortgage will pay about £47 more a month. Those on standard variable rate (SVR) mortgages face a £30 jump
Since December 2021, that is an increase in monthly repayments of £465 on a tracker and £297 on an SVR.
Borrowing costs are also likely to rise. Currently the average annual interest rate is 21.86% on bank overdrafts and 20.13% on credit cards.
The dramatic move comes as the Bank tries to show it is in control of inflation, the annual rate at which prices go up, which was much higher than expected in May and far above levels seen in other countries.
Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is also under pressure to tackle the problem, having vowed to halve inflation by the end of the year.
On Thursday he said the job “has got harder” but added he was “totally 100% on it”.
“Rooting out inflation is not easy. It requires difficult decisions,” he added.
He added that people’s weekly shop had “gone up far too much” and the government would make sure supermarkets behaved “responsibly and fairly”.
In a letter to Mr Bailey, Chancellor Jeremy Hunt said he would meet regulators next week to discuss how it can make sure falls in wholesale costs are passed onto customers. It comes after supermarkets have been accused of making too much money from rising food prices.
However, they have denied profiteering, with the British Retail Consortium saying stores are working to keep prices “as low as possible”.
Shadow chancellor Rachel Reeves said families would be “desperately worried about what today’s interest rate rise might mean for them”.

How the interest rate rise affects you
Five tips for saving money on your mortgage
‘I have to find £400 more each month’
Ewan Cameron bought a flat in London two years ago and has just managed to secure a new fixed-rate mortgage deal, but not before he had two mortgage offers pulled.
He has now got to find an extra £400 a month to pay for his home, and is considering renting out the spare room to help pay for it.
‘I moved abroad to save but still can’t afford a mortgage’
In theory raising interest rates makes it more expensive to borrow money, meaning people have less to spend. This makes it harder for firms to raise prices.
However, the process also drags on the UK economy, which is struggling to grow. Higher rates are also forcing mortgage lenders – who are affected by the Bank’s decisions – to put up their own rates.
Matt Smith, a mortgage expert at property portal Rightmove, said the rate rise would not be “much of a shock” to lenders.
He said the Bank had opted for a large hike in part to reassure the financial markets – though it remained to be seen whether it would work.
“If today’s news does provide some reassurance, then we’d hope to see some stability return to the mortgage market which will help those looking to take out a mortgage this year to plan ahead,” he said.
There have been calls for the government to step in and help homeowners, but Mr Hunt and Mr Sunak have so far dismissed suggestions that ministers could intervene.
However, Mr Hunt is set to meet with banks on Friday as pleas grow for more to be done.
Labour has also said it would not intervene. But it has said the government should force banks to help homeowners struggling with mortgage payments, for instance by allowing them to switch to interest-only payments for a temporary period.
Consumer champion Martin Lewis has warned “a mortgage ticking time bomb is now exploding”.
The Bank’s Monetary Policy Committee (MPC), which sets UK rates, voted 7-2 in favour of a half percentage point rise – its biggest hike since February.
Two members of the committee voted to keep rates on hold.
In a letter to Mr Hunt, Mr Bailey said that overall inflation was still set to fall “significantly” during the course of the year as energy prices come down.
But he added that the Bank would continue to monitor inflation closely, and would raise rates further if necessary.
Interest rates remain the Bank’s primary tool to lower inflation, despite debate over their effectiveness.
The Bank said it was “continuing to monitor closely the impact” of the significant increase in the Bank rate so far.
It added that given the number of people yet to come off fixed-rate mortgage deals, the full impact of recent rate rises would “not be felt for some time”.
What do I do if I can’t afford to pay my debts?
It is important that you do talk about financial difficulties before finding yourself in a spiral of debt. The earlier, the better.
If you think you cannot pay your debts or are finding dealing with them overwhelming, seek support straight away. You are not alone and there is help available.
A trained debt adviser can talk you through the options available.
What help and options are available to people struggling with debt repayments?

3 convicted Islamist terrorists in Britain could go free in the next few months
Three men imprisoned in the United Kingdom for a range of terrorist plots may soon walk free as their cases go before a parole board.
Parviz Khan, Jawad Akbar and Zakariya Ashiq will go before a parole board over the next few months, with Akbar’s case expected to go ahead before Christmas this year.
Khan, 50, was convicted in a plot to kidnap and behead a British soldier in 2008 after a six-month sting operation by British police. A judge sentenced the Birmingham resident to 13 years in prison, including time awaiting trial.

Ashiq, 26, attempted to join the Islamic State by flying to Syria in 2015, but failed to enter the country and had to return home. Police arrested him at Heathrow Airport upon his return and went to prison for six years.
The three men have also been identified as the disciples of a “hate” preacher, Anjem Choudary, who has inspired dozens of convicted terrorists and over a dozen plots over the past two decades, according to a report by The Daily Mail.

How to Buy Online Halal Meat
In order to find out what people in the UK are buying and eating, you can join an online halal meat tasting trial. There is an online halal meat tasting trial for many of the main meats across the UK - including pork, beef, lamb, turkey and chicken. You are invited to take this tasting tour for a serious investigation into the whole online halal meat marketplace in the UK. The tour aims to investigate halal meat from the customers point of view. And you can take a trip to some of the places that you hear about on the internet.
You will be able to sample some of the best products and expert advice. There will also be a live discussion between the experts and you can interact with others using a Q&A forum. You can even email your questions and the team will get back to you as quickly as possible. When you are through the online halal meat tasting tour, you will have learnt all about some of the most popular online products in the market today.
As you can imagine, the most popular product is the halal Chicken. This includes both kosher and non-Kosher products. Most halal products are available from an online meat store. From kosher chicken to kosher beef and pork; the list is endless.
If you are looking for more information on the different types of halal food available online, there is a wealth of information for you. The most popular types of food to purchase include kosher and non-Kosher products. However, there are thousands of variations of each. So it can be hard to know which is best for you. You may want to do some research on your own to see which type would be best for you.
The first question to ask yourself is what type of halal food London do you eat? Do you eat kosher food or are you allowed to use meat that is not kosher? It is important to find out the difference between the two.
Many people are confused about which meats are permissible for consumption and which aren't. Kosher halal meats include kosher chicken, kosher fish and kosher pork while non-kosher animals include deer, swine, rabbits and hares. In addition, kosher food does not include any dog meat. For example, a dog could be kosher but not certified as such so you would need to check with the local authorities for the same.
The other question to ask yourself is where you plan on purchasing your online halal meats. There are many sources including online directories but you need to ensure that they are authentic. Many directories will sell fake products at a higher price. You also have to make sure that the website is run by a recognized organization and will provide you with a certificate of authenticity.
When shopping online for your online halal meats, it is important that you look at the label carefully. Look for the words 'halal' and 'legal'. These labels will indicate that the product is clean and does not come from an animal in violation of Islamic law. If the product does not contain these words and has no certification from an Islamic institute or institution, then the product should be considered infidels. This means that it is not permitted by Muslims to consume it. Purchasing online halal meat from an established source will help to ensure that you are buying authentic products.
Once you have chosen your source for online halal meat, you need to shop around. If you find a store that sells it online and the price seems too good to be true, chances are it is. Ask questions and read the website carefully. If you find information about the company or the school that taught the teacher how to prepare halal meat, you can be reasonably assured that it is safe to eat.
Before ordering any online halal meat you should read the terms and conditions. Check to make sure that the food is Kosher and that it is packed according to the required specifications. This can be checked on the government web sites as well. Never purchase online halal meat that you are unsure about as you could end up paying a hefty sum. Also, read the reviews left by previous buyers to see if there have been any complaints against the online halal meat vendor.
The quality of the meat and the service of the online seller will determine your experience. With so much information on the internet it is easy to compare products and make an informed choice. With these guidelines in mind you should be able to find a reliable online halal meat vendor.

Residential property design in post-Covid world

Residential property design in a post-Covid world

Placemaking ‘settlements’ with eco-credentials: image : Withers
How property design will be different in a post-Covid world
Covid-19 is accelerating rapid change in what we want from our homes and how housing developments are designed, a new report from international law firm Withers explains.
COVID-19 Residential Property Design Report
The report, which features insight from fifteen world-leading business and property experts, discusses the impact of Covid-19 on how we use our homes as well as where we want to live.
Key considerations that the experts anticipate are driving a rapid shift in where and how new homes are developed in the post-Covid world include: an increased demand for a more flexible living space; a greater focus on a home’s locality and nearby amenities; a heightened aspiration for community; and a greater emphasis on more sustainable and environmentally-friendly construction methods.
Homes will no longer serve a purely domestic purpose…
According to the experts, people will expect their homes to deliver much more because they will no longer serve a purely domestic purpose – they will become places that must fulfil home, work and social needs.
‘The home won’t just be a trading commodity you return to, play video games, have sex and go to sleep. People will be more interested in their living space.’
Robert Adam, Founder, Robert Adam Architecture Consultancy.
Spending more time in the home will also lead to more in-home entertaining. In the experts’ view, this will elevate the importance of these aspects of the home and this will be felt in design.
Location, location, location will mean a move from city centres…
Property agents have reported an increase in the number of people moving from city centres in the wake of Covid-19, to locations that are further afield than people had traditionally considered. These locations are not rural but offer a feeling of being outside of the central metropolises while still being well served by the kind of amenities and resources they are used to.
There have also been reports of increased demand for homes in well served villages, market towns, and coastal areas within an hour and a half journey to the cities; as home working offers more freedom and people look for more living space and greener environments.
Homeowners will expect more amenities on their doorstep…
As more time is spent at home, for one purpose or another, experts believe that the immediate locality will have to satisfy needs that were previously met elsewhere. Wherever people live, they will expect more amenities, variety, and infrastructure to be provided locally.
Withers’ experts believe that people have embraced local services and retailers during the pandemic and have questioned their use of larger national providers in a way that they hadn’t done previously. In some instances, confidence in national retailers was undermined by shortages and people discovered that there was more choice on their doorstep than perhaps they had appreciated.
‘As people have refocussed on getting provisions nearby, local businesses have seen a real boost… there’s been a nice re-discovery of traditional local shops’
Richard Pickering, Chief Strategy Officer, Cushman & Wakefield.
image : Withers
Suburbia will need to reinvent itself…
People’s expectations and requirements might have moved on, but the experts believe that suburbia has been slow to adapt. A theme from the report is that the suburbs feel tired and lacklustre and in their current configuration they are ill equipped to accommodate the resurgence in demand for community, brought about by an increased amount of time spent at home.
Withers’ experts believe that suburbs will need to become destinations that people want to spend time in, rather than simply travel to or from. Ultimately this is about creating a sense of community where perhaps it had been lacking, for which you need the businesses, shops, services, and amenities that make community possible.
‘The suburbs are knackered. They aren’t community hubs because they were built to be driven out of, so there’s nothing there’
Robbie Kerr, Director, ADAM Architecture.
‘Early 20th century suburbia that have very little to offer, homogenous outdated houses, there’s no ‘there’, there… the challenge is to create new settlements around them… it’s difficult to urbanise a suburb, but it needs doing’
Professor Yolande Barnes, Chair at Bartlett Real Estate Institute, University College London.
Vertical villages – buildings that offer housing, amenities, working spaces and ‘green’ space: image : Withers
New housing developments could look and feel a little different…
There is a prevailing sense that new settlements will be characterised by mixed use, mixed tenure, and mixed community features. The experts believe that housing developers will have to think harder about how to achieve this and these design considerations are likely to rank higher up the agenda than they have done historically.
‘Placemaking is a buzzword that has come to define a lot of the debate around the future of real estate after the pandemic and is perhaps best characterised as the creation of a space with a unique community which enhances quality of life. The norm is a nod to placemaking with a duck pond in the middle of a housing estate, but new settlements need long term management and curation’
Professor Yolande Barnes, Chair at Bartlett Real Estate Institute, University College London.
A home’s eco-credentials will be considered more…
The experts believe that new home buyers will drive demand for sustainability in new homes and settlements, and that developers may have to deliver on sustainability and environmental promises as never before.
‘Housebuilders will want to develop and build a reputation based on both their eco credentials and also their placemaking credentials’
Lucian Cook, Head of UK Residential Research, Savills.
Jeremy Wakeham, CEO of the Withers Business Division and a commercial real estate partner added:
“The world over, the buildings we work, live and socialise in are wrestling with the challenge of catering for our new demands and this presents extraordinary opportunities. This report examines this historic turning point in attitudes and practices to how we use property across all areas of our lives.
“Homes are taking on a new level of importance. Our respondents anticipate that people will expect their homes to deliver much more because they will no longer serve a purely domestic purpose. As more time is spent at home, for one purpose or another, the immediate locality will have to satisfy needs that were previously met elsewhere. Wherever people live, they will expect amenities, variety and infrastructure to be provided locally. Getting behind the right targets at the right time will be crucial for investors and developers.”

First Week Settling-in Durham
Teruntuk teman-teman yang ingin melanjutkan Master atau PhD Islamic Finance di United Kingdom, disini terdapat beberapa opsi university yang menyediakan jurusan tersebut seperti di Bangor University, Markfield Institute of Higher Education (MIHE), Reading University berlokasi di Kuala Lumpur, City University of London, Lancester University, Salford University. Durham University sendiri memiliki Master Islamic Finance and Master Islamic Finance and Management.
How beautiful it is!! Lovely village.
Note: 1 pounds setara Rp17.800 (kurs berubah setiap hari); 1 pounds = 100 pence.
"Hendaklah mereka mengulurkan jilbabnya keseluruh tubuh mereka".

Observing Ramzan in the time of COVID-19
New Post has been published on https://apzweb.com/observing-ramzan-in-the-time-of-covid-19/
Observing Ramzan in the time of COVID-19
As millions of Muslims observe Ramzan, the month of dawn-to-dusk fasting, how will social distancing and self-isolation work in a world fearing contagion from an unseen enemy?
For the first time in recent history, the Saudi Arabian government has closed down Al-Masjid Al-Haram (The Great Mosque) in Mecca and Al-Masjid an-Nabawi (The Prophet’s Mosque) in Medina, considered to be Islam’s holiest sites, for Ramzan, as part of its efforts to contain the spread of COVID-19.
And in much of southern India, the making and distribution of nonbu kanji (rice gruel) for the fast-breaking meal (iftar) through mosques is in doubt. While the act of prayer has not been affected, the community spirit that mosques foster during the holy month may be missing this year. Even so, people are determined to make the best of circumstances.
Staying safe
“Muslims throughout the world are facing Ramzan at the time of Coronavirus. But we hope everything will go smoothly as usual,” says Nawab Mohammed Abdul Ali, the Prince of Arcot, who is based in Chennai.
“I would advise my Muslim brethren to avoid going to the mosque for prayers during Ramzan. There should not be any congregation at all, whether for iftar or for taraweeh (special prayers). It is also part of the sayings of Prophet Muhammad that during medical emergencies and inclement weather, one should not go to the mosque for prayers,” he says, adding that people should stay at a safe distance this year, while conveying their festive wishes to one another, rather than embracing or shaking hands, as is commonly done.
Many community leaders feel that it is better for Muslims to stay in during Ramzan. “The virus does not recognise religion or for that matter, a fasting or non-fasting person. The best way out is to remain wherever one is,” says Mahmood Alam, former professor of Persian at Jawaharlal Nehru University, Delhi and a published Urdu poet.

Alam and his wife have been in self-isolation at their Delhi home since March 18. “Every year, representatives from seminaries would distribute the calendar denoting timings for breaking and keeping the fast for each day. We will miss them this time due to social distancing. The best parts of Ramzan are the prayers. I wish there would be a safe way to help the poor and destitute with our donations during the lockdown.”
The calendars, which used to range from postcard-sized printouts to pamphlets, have transitioned online as downloadable ‘Ramzan planners’, complete with journal-style pages listing out verses and prayers. With its emphasis on abstinence, Ramzan has always been about self-restraint and introspection.
Of prayer and promise
‘Ramadan’ is an Arabic word whose root is Ramad, meaning ‘scorchedness of the earth due to excessive heat’. It is pronounced as Ramzan in much of South Asia.
Believed to be the month when the Holy Koran was revealed, Ramzan may be observed for 29 or 30 days, depending on the Islamic lunar calendar. The festival ‘Eid Al Fitr’ marks the end of Ramzan.
Most Muslims try to finish at least one complete recitation of the Koran by the end of the month, and mosques engage skilled qaris or trained reciters to conduct the late-night taraweeh prayers that are exclusive to Ramzan.
There is an increased emphasis on charity, especially on the payment of zakat, a fixed percentage of a person’s savings of the year to be given to the needy.
“This lockdown may be a blessing in disguise — one will be more focussed on prayer and less distracted by iftar parties and shopping,” says Fathima Sulaiman, a homemaker based out of Chennai, who is visiting her hometown Tiruchi. “The meals may not be as sumptuous as during previous years, but it is an opportunity for me to spend time with my extended family of 15 members,” she adds.
Reaching out
Elsewhere in the world, lockdown restrictions have seen unemployment and goods shortages, but these have been counter-balanced by growing communication between locality residents through online platforms like Nextdoor and Facebook.
“It’s unfortunate that the lockdown is on during the most anticipated month for Muslims because there will be no taraweeh prayers, community iftars and all-night stays allowed at our mosques,” says N Sabrine, an Indian-American real estate professional based in Dublin, California.
Sharing iftar among family and friends may also be difficult because getting groceries has become much harder. “Our local mosque is collecting food donations that will be distributed among needy families as part of Ramzan-related activities. Sermons will now be streamed online for the benefit of those staying in,” she adds.

Many Islamic scholars in the US have announced schedules for app-based sermons throughout the month. In the UK, mosques in London will be participating in online initiatives like counselling and Korannic talks. This is currently unavailable in India.
“Due to the lockdown, there will be no prayers in mosques, but there is no plan to shift sermons online as of now,” says Moulvi Abdul Rahim, Tiruchi District Secretary of Tamil Nadu Jamathul Ulama Sabai (a council of Islamic scholars).
For Egyptian national Haitham el-Khouly, a software executive working in Qatar, helping those who have lost their livelihood due to the lockdown has become this year’s Ramzan goal. “People can no longer gather in the ‘iftar tents’ that used to be open to all during the holy month. I am planning to donate money to people who are going through a tough time in the lockdown,” he says.
Scaling back and reconstructing life’s timetable may not be impossible, says homemaker Fathima. “This Ramzan may be a chance to rediscover ourselves, bond better with our families, chat with old friends to rekindle past memories and to do all those small things, which we wanted to do but lacked the time.”

How Halal Tourism is Reshaping the Global Tourism Industry
By Yulia Belopilskaya,
Spending by Muslim travelers is expected to rise to US$220 billion by 2020, with the number of Muslim tourists growing to 156 million from 121 million in 2016. That's according to the Global Muslim Travel Index (GTMI) 2017, which was produced by Mastercard and CrescentRating, a 'halal-friendly' travel consultancy.
'Halal' tourism is clearly a growing market segment, with Muslim tourists seeking destinations which meet their needs, in terms of diet, dress or rituals. Translated from Arabic, 'halal' means permissible in accordance with Islamic teaching. Alcohol, pork, nudity and gambling are off limits.
With a burgeoning middle class and increasing disposable income, many countries - whether Muslim or not - are looking to attract these travelers. Malaysia, the United Arab Emirates, Indonesia and Turkey are among the leading Muslim destinations. Singapore, Thailand and the United Kingdom are among the top non-Islamic or OIC (Organization of the Islamic Conference) destinations.
Despite being a predominantly Buddhist country, albeit with a sizeable Muslim population in the south, Thailand has proved to be a popular destination for Muslims, mainly from Indonesia looking for affordable vacations and Thai food. As for the UK, Muslim spending is expected to rise to US$4.1 billion by 2020 even though there has been a spike in Islamophobic assaults following recent terror attacks in London and Manchester.
Adapting to the needs of Muslim travelers
Given the potential of this sector, it's important for the hospitality industry to adapt to changing halal requirements to meet the needs of Muslim tourists. According to CrescentRating, hotels and restaurants should offer halal food at the very least. A destination is then seen as increasingly attractive for Muslim travelers - as assessed in the GTMI ranking - based on the availability of prayer facilities, Muslim-friendly washrooms and Ramadan-related offerings. While many airports are now offering halal food and prayer rooms, some still lack wash or ablution facilities.
Shaping the future with technology
In addition to more traditional online travel agencies or OTAs such as booking.com or TripAdvisor, Muslim-friendly platforms are springing up. Take for instance Halalbooking.com, a London-based market place for halal tourist accommodation that is expecting to achieve revenues of at least one billion pounds by the end of 2021.
Peer-to-peer platforms are also emerging. Bookhalalhomes.com has become the world's leading portal for halal accommodation rentals. It differentiates itself from Airbnb by guaranteeing halal-certified services such as halal food and designated prayer rooms.
Smartphone apps are also being developed. The Tourism Authority of Thailand has launched an app that helps Muslim travelers find halal products and services. It provides information about prayer times, food options and sightseeing tours. Another app, HalalTrip, offers information related to more than 65 destinations worldwide. It generates revenue by selling suitable tour packages, whether it's experiencing Great White Sharks in South Africa, culture and history in Spain, or shopping in Dubai.
Compared to more established western OTAs though, halal tourism e-commerce is still in its infancy. As we've outlined, however, it's a growing market that needs to be served. Technology will continue to shape the growth of the sector by allowing hoteliers, restaurateurs and others to demonstrate that they are sensitive to halal requirements.
How innovation affects demand
With spending by Muslim travelers on course to reach US$220 billion by 2020, and Islam the fastest-growing religion in the world, Muslim tourists are definitely some of the most important customers in the travel market.
Pull factors such as family-friendly and Muslim-friendly services are important, as is halal awareness. Where safety concerns and basic halal requirements are met, Muslim tourism will continue to grow.
As for technology, halal tech firms appear to have established a first-mover advantage. But it's only a matter of time before major western OTAs enter and seek to dominate this promising market.

Gang rape victim speaks about seeing her attacker Yaqub Ahmed on video
The 27-year-old mother sitting beside me on a suburban park bench is trembling with a mixture of fear and rage. She can barely suppress her anger as she recalls the moment she watched a video of a refugee being escorted from an aircraft at Heathrow after a mutiny by passengers halted his deportation.
As The Mail on Sunday revealed last year, that man was Yaqub Ahmed, a Somalian who a decade earlier had been convicted and jailed with three others for a sickening gang rape.
Today his victim breaks her silence and, in an exclusive interview, condemns the holidaymakers who stepped in to defend him, ignorant of the horrifying attack that ripped her life apart.
In the video, filmed by a passenger, Ahmed, 29, is seen screaming as a group of people on board bellow at officials to ‘take him off the plane!’
For Hannah (not her real name), those pantomime-style cries were as nothing compared to her terrified screams as she fought for her life during Ahmed’s gang’s attack in a dingy flat in North London in August 2007 when she was just 16.
‘You think that was a bad scream? Try hearing the screams that I made,’ says Hannah in a powerful message to the ‘bleeding heart’ passengers who decided to intervene in Ahmed’s deportation.
And she asks them: ‘How could you defend a rapist? How could you intervene? He was in handcuffs, he was being taken out of the country… who are you people to interfere with justice?
‘Fair enough you didn’t know the situation, but now I hope you feel proud of yourselves because you stopped something that I have waited for for so long: something that made me feel that little bit safer.’
Her four tormentors were jailed for a total of 35 years and, while one is believed to have died after fleeing to Syria to fight for the Islamic State group, she is haunted by the thought of seeing the others who have now been released and remain in the UK.
Ahmed’s deportation would have given Hannah a modicum of comfort, but since the failed attempt to kick him out, her mental health has collapsed.
Yaqub Ahmed, 29, was convicted of gang raping a 16-year-old in a North London flat in 2007
Already struggling to cope with the complex post traumatic stress disorder triggered by her rape, she is now too terrified to travel more than two miles from her home. In November she quit a job that she loved due to her mounting anxiety and stress.
‘A lot of the time I just feel hopeless, it’s never going to end, I’m never going to get away from it,’ she says. ‘They need to deport him. How have they allowed this to happen? It’s an absolute farce. I thought there was meant to be victim’s rights. Where are my rights here?’
Officials escorting Ahmed on the flight to Turkey last October abandoned his deportation shortly before take-off after around a dozen passengers – unaware of his sickening crime – took pity on him and angrily intervened. The three-and-a-half minute video posted online showed passengers waving camera phones amid a barrage of shouts and whistles. One bearded British man in a blue T-shirt approached Ahmed before telling fellow passengers: ‘He says they’re separating him from his family, his family’s here.’
Another man jabbed his finger at an official and, drawing his finger across his throat for dramatic effect, barked: ‘When he gets to Mogadishu, they’re going to kill him.’
Ahmed’s victim, known as Hannah for this article, spoke to the Mail on Sunday about seeing the video of her attacker
To applause from the passengers, the four-strong Home Office team finally relented and frog-marched Ahmed from the aircraft as one holidaymaker shouted: ‘You’re free man!’
Hannah was unaware of the failed deportation until she read this newspaper’s front page story five days later and realised Ahmed was one of her rapists.
Eventually she summoned the strength to click on the video and, as she sat in her bedroom, was horrified by what she saw. ‘I couldn’t bring myself to watch the video at first, I just read the article, but when I finally did watch it, I was in my room and it was just awful. I got so angry and upset,’ she says.
‘I feel like I should have been told, so I didn’t have to find out in the way that I did.
‘I just didn’t want to see his face again. They applauded and cheered and said, “You’re free man!” It just enraged me.’ Five months later, Ahmed remains in an Immigration Removal Centre at a cost to taxpayers so far of at least £18,000.
Home Office sources say the Government is still planning to deport him, although he appears to have launched yet another appeal.
He was listed to appear before an immigration tribunal in Nottingham on March 14. Both the Home Office and the tribunal last week refused to reveal the outcome of the hearing.
For Hannah, the intense focus on Ahmed’s botched deportation has brought horrific memories of the incident from 11 years ago flooding back.
Ahmed was going to be deported to Somalia, before a group of passengers intervened last year
By her own admission, she was a wayward teenager and by the age of 16 had moved out of the family home and was living in a hostel.
Her life changed after she enjoyed a night out at the Zoo Bar in London’s Leicester Square. After becoming separated from her friend she was approached by a man – now known to be Adnan Mohamud – who persuaded her to go to a flat in Crouch End on the false pretext that her friend was there waiting for her.
‘I couldn’t find her and I had no phone or bus pass. She had everything,’ Hannah recalls. ‘I was calling out and this guy approached at me and said, “Your friend has gone with one of our friends.” ’
She then recalls the terrifying moment she realised that she had been lured into a trap.
‘I got to the place and my friend wasn’t there. They said she had gone to the shop and that she was coming back.’ She buries her head into a pale blue scarf and sobs, before bravely continuing: ‘They did what they did. They held me down. They took turns.
The passengers told Home Office officials that the man was being separated from his family
‘I kept trying to get at them. That’s why they had me on my front, so I couldn’t get to them easily and then one of them turned me over and I got him by the neck. I just felt this adrenaline. I remember just grabbing him, trying to get any part of him, trying to grab his face. I was trying to bite and claw.’
Hannah punched one of her attackers, only to be punched back. Despite being stunned by the blow, she managed to force her way past the men and escape, tumbling down a flight of stairs as she fled.
By the time she burst free, neighbours who had heard her screams had alerted police who arrested the men at the scene.
Despite overwhelming forensic evidence, the men, aged between 18 and 20 at the time, denied rape, forcing Hannah to relive the ordeal during several days of cross-examination at a trial. It left her even more traumatised. ‘They had four barristers and they were saying some awful things to me. The things they said to me messed me up for years.’
One man yelled out ‘you’re free man’ after Ahmed was escorted off the plane and back to Heathrow Airport
Yaqub Ahmed, then 19 and living in Clerkenwell, North London; Adnan Mohamud, 19, who lived in the flat where the rape took place; and Adnan Barud, 21, from Holloway, North London, were each jailed for nine years for planning and carrying out the rape. A fourth man, Ondogo Ahmed, 19, also of Holloway, received eight years for conspiracy to rape.
As he sentenced them, the judge said their actions would have a severe psychological impact on their victim – an assessment that has tragically proved only too true.
Various therapies have so far failed to help Hannah, who has struggled to access the specialised mental health care she needs. ‘The PTSD thing is the worst because that can come in at any time. Certain things will just trigger me off.’
Ondogo Ahmed, was one of one of Yaqub’s accomplices. He disappeared from the UK and died while fighting for ISIS in 2013
Hannah says her primary school-aged daughter has provided something to live for but fears her anxiety affects their relationship. ‘She is my world but I am not able to be the best mum at the minute. She has seen me crying recently and its hard – it’s spilling out into my mothering duties.’
Hannah, who has now moved out of London, contrasts her struggle to find help with the huge sums of taxpayers’ money spent on Yaqub Ahmed, who is thought to have been granted refugee status after arriving in Britain from Somalia as a youngster.
Last month, The Mail on Sunday revealed how Ahmed’s lawyers had been reimbursed £3,339 in legal aid for their work in challenging his detention and removal between 2010 and 2016. The solicitor and barrister who acted for him at his Crown Court trial got £28,000 and his ongoing stay in a detention centre is believed to cost £100 a day.
Ahmed is not the only gang member the Government has failed to kick out.
Mohamud, also born in Somalia, was released from prison in May 2013 and initially told that he was not liable for deportation.
The Home Office reversed that position eight months later when the security situation in Somalia improved, but he has been fighting the move ever since. A spokesman for his legal firm Fountain Solicitors declined to comment.
Meanwhile, Barud, who was released in July 2014, cannot be deported because, while born in Somalia, he has British citizenship.
Hannah was saved by the police, after she burst free from her attackers and screamed for help
Ondogo Ahmed, who is thought to have been born in Eritrea, was released in 2012 and, despite being on licence, astonishingly managed to sneak out of Britain and join IS in Syria. The Ministry of Justice told Hannah earlier this month that he is believed to have been killed there but ‘there is still an outstanding warrant for his arrest, should this information not be correct’.
She is understandably astonished that he was able to flee. ‘How was he allowed to abscond when he was meant to be on licence? Isn’t that their job, to be keeping tabs on dangerous individuals?’ But Hannah saves her anger for the officials on the deportation flight.
‘They should have executed their job, which is to calm things down, to tell the passengers if they don’t stop causing trouble they will be removed from the flight just like any other unruly passenger.
‘The more they stuck up for him, the more he screamed. It’s like a kid having a tantrum, the more attention you give that kid, the worse their screams get.’
She thinks the passengers were seized by a ‘mob mentality’.
‘It’s the bleeding heart brigade. They see someone in handcuffs and they are assuming it’s an injustice.
Hannah was particularly aggrieved at the Home Office officials who took Ahmed off the plane
‘Those people should have realised it takes a lot to get someone deported, maybe we shouldn’t interfere. It was just people who wanted to do a good deed and feel proud of themselves.’
Sarcastically clapping their actions, she adds: ‘Well, I hope you all feel proud of yourselves.’
Hannah says she has decided to speak out in the hope that her attackers are finally booted out of the UK. Her pleas for information from the Home Office fell on deaf ears until The Mail on Sunday intervened and a Victim Support Team got in touch.
A Home Office spokesman said: ‘We are determined to protect the public by removing foreign national offenders who commit criminal offences. We are committed to ensuring that the victims of foreign national offenders receive the information they are entitled to should they request it.’
But Hannah despairs of the glacial deportation process and, appallingly, it is she who is now considering leaving Britain.
‘I just want to be able to move around freely, and until I know that they are out of the country I’m never going to get that peace,’ she says. ‘It shouldn’t have come to this. It should have happened already. All I want to do is have the opportunity to rebuild, to recover. I just want what everyone else has.’
