Hi, I read Toman and Muslim Reader a while ago and I like it So since Eid al-Adha is near, can you write a second part with the addition of Tenjiku and Yuzuha?

And I wonder what their reaction will be when they discover that a reader cannot marry a person who is not a Muslim unless he converts to Islam and performs all the religious duties as it should.(It was funny when reading Mitsuya and Draken's reaction when they found out that Muslims don't get tattoos 😂😂)

I think Imma convert to Islam to be honest 'cuz it's such a cool and peaceful and beautiful religion and I honestly hate anyone who thinks of them as terrorists or some other bad thing.

Is what you said 'Eid al-Adha' this festival where you kill/sacrifice a goat or sheep or something? My friend told me that she would do it this wednesday or thursday, as in the festival being two days long or something...? Also she said that she'd fast on the 27th...oh well

Anyways, I actually laughed my ass off when I thought about their shocked faces and then also thinking of each other like 'damn, Draken/Mitsuya has one too!' and then the first one calling the other and berating each other about getting their tattoos removed lol

Also, I'm going to write stuff which is sadly not happening canonly, and I'm only at chapter 139, so please bear with me. Also you didn't tell me which ones, so I just did these below plus your precious Yuzuha.

Nah bruh, that's not it.

he saw you for the first time when he craved some food in the convenience store

didn't really think much of you at first, but he didn't really see you before

you also didn't really look like a japanese woman, more like a foreigner

so, he just watched you for a bit

you were actually having a pretty good life, and he was a little jealous

but then, one day, you were quickly making your way to a bigger shop, while talking to somebody in a stressed manner, you were sweating and looking around fevereshly

over the time he watched you, he grew somwehat protective of you

and when he saw you like this? He didn't like it

he thought that somebody was after you, and what would be the best way to introduce himself to you?

After all, many people here knew him and also not to mess with him

"my name is Izana Kurokawa, and I noticed that you didn't look very well. Are you alright?"

and when you noticed him, like really staring into his eyes, he lost it

you were the most beautiful woman he's ever met actually, and he felt his breath hitch

"Huh? Oh no, it's alright love, just preparing for a festival is all!"

Festival? But there were no Japanese festivals announced yet-

"Oh, let me introcuce myself first. My name is ____ ______ and I'm from ______. I'm a muslim, as in my religion is Islam, and in a week, a day called Eid-Adha will come and there we will sacrifice a sheep/goat and share some meat with our aquaintances and eat it along with friends and families."

This was too much input, but he managed to understand

"Do you guys have a sheep yet?"

"Sadly no, we also can't buy slughtered meat from the meathouse because it's not halal."

"And what does that mean?"

"It means that the sheep is not slaughtered by a muslim."

"...and what if I bring you an alive sheep? would that be okay?"

"What? Oh, no. No no, please, you don't have to stress yourself, Kurokawa, it's alright!"

Nah, it was not. Your parents were in dire need of a sheep actually

And safe to say, you were secretely happy that the friend you made the day prior did not only help you with your groceries, he also brought you a sheep the next day

...but where did he get that animal from?

after your confrontation, Izana had no choice but to tell you the truth.

He told you about everything that happened and expected you to give him a scared expression and then run away

but you gave him a sad look.

"I can somewhat relate to what you're going through right now. But doing all this because you're holding a grudge against his little brother is not going to lift your spirit, you know?"

You poured him a cup of tea and he thanked you silently.

Izana was surprised that you still talked to him. He really expected you to run away

"would Shinichiro be okay with you trying to hurt his brother? You're Emma's brother, after all. Have you gotten in contact with her yet? I'm sure she'd love to see her sibling again."

Emma...?

Tears spilled from his eyes. His shoulders shook.

"Izana...it's okay. let it all out. God knows what you're going through. He is testing you."

"why..? Why is god doing that to me...?", the leader croaked, and you could see a spark in his eyes.

"Because he loves you. God loves every single living form in this planet. He created us, after all. And he is also the most forgiving of us all.

Talk to Mikey, talk to Emma. Talk to everyone you don't like and see what happens. Hope for the best, pray for the best thing to happen. Imagine how happy Shinichiro would be if he saw his two brothers getting along! Imagine how happy Emma would be to see you again!"

He thought about it, but he was not so sure.

But he tried.

He asked you to accompany him, and you said yes with a smile. you were glad to aid as emotional support.

What you didn't tell him though, was that you already knew Mikey and Toman.

Izana didn't.

And so, Izana met with Mikey, who firstly greeted you, and then also greeted Izana, but with a little less respect.

"Listen, Manjiro Sano, I'm sorry. Surely, you must've read my letters by now,", he started as he noticed a carton boy with opened letters that looked an awful lot like the ones he and Shin sent each other.

"I...was jealous of you. That you were his...real brother. I wanted to be his brother too, but well..."

Mikey understood. "then let's be brothers, Izana."

Izana looked at him with more widened eyes, then he looked at you. You smiled at him.

From that day on, Tenjiku and Toman were good with each other, thanks to a little help of yours.

Izana also felt closer to you. He felt at ease with you. He wanted to know more about you.

Izana wasn't really a religious person, so it gave him a little whiplash when you told him that you could only marry a muslim or a converted muslim.

He never knew that he'd want to try to become or do something for someone

but if it was you, then he'd for sure try.

and it was actually the best experience he had

praying fives times a day was no problem, as you and him frequented a mosque that wasn't too far away from you

he was a little sad by the fact that he couldn't pray with you, but the brothers on the other side welcomed him with open arms

Izana would've actually liked to stay there longer and listen to the men, but he remembered that he had to meet up with you in two minutes

like an excited puppy did he tell you about everything he knew, and only after a second did he realize that you knew most of it already

still, you gave him a smile and encouraged him to learn more

That guy is just as stupid as the others.

He also just noticed you recently, but he found you to be a pretty foreigner

He actually wanted to hang out with you, and so he also introduced himself

"Name's Kakucho, may I know your's, pretty lady?", he was actually quite the charmer (my headcannon)

you smiled, his heart pounded, and you said your name as well

still, you asked him about his scar, which was...very visible

"Ah, just a little accident!"

"Really? Poor you ...Oh, it's time for me to go, it was nice hanging out with you! See you soon!"

and with that, you left.

like Izana, Kakucho felt the strong need to look after you.

I mean, c'mon, who wouldn't want to protect a pretty girl like you?

Kakucho also hoped that he'd have a chance with you, but we'll come to that later

Safe to say, you two saw each other very soon

some nameless delinquents were cornering you and you had no other choice but to scream

Out of curiosity, Izana's "brother", looked at the source

and he saw red.

you were holding your purse close to your chest and pressed yourself against the wall, and in front of you were three guys with knifes in their hands

"give us you-" *CRUNCH*

the first one fell down, two more to go

You stared at the body on the ground, he must've given the guy a concussion

then you looked at your savior, who just punched the other two away and came to you

"Are you alright, ____?" "Yeah, I'm fine. But you didn't have to beat them up like that. but...but still, thank you."

he smiled and blushed and felt so happy that he saved you

"It was no big deal, but hey-; what were you doing at this hour? It's already past six!"

"I had to pick up my little brother from his friend's house. um, would you like to accompany me? I don't want to get attacked again, you know? I mean, if you're free at the moment...!"

Could this day get any better?

"Sure! You know where he lives?"

"Yup!"

and so, you two talked and laughed along the way here.

You felt your cheeks heat up. Why? guess we'll never know

"Uh, yeah! Y-yeah, sure! But! I-it shouldn't be taken lightly! Fulfilling the five prayers is not easy, or reading the Quran, or learning arabic, or doing your best at all times. Of course, the religion is beautiful and makes a better human out of you, but it is not to be taken lightly, and shouldn't be accepted because out of love to a person, but to Allah.

He created us after all. And the only thing he wants from us is to believe in him, to look for him when times get rough, to search assurements from him when you do not feel well, to thank him for having such a life as yours, even if it's bad. It could always get worse, so always be grateful for your creator."

Kakucho then started thinking more of the religion than of you

mans never had such a peaceful feeling when he was listening to podcasts of converted muslims and men or sheikhs talking about things that can or shouldn't be done

Kakucho thought that he'd never see heaven, but he prayed

"dear god, sorry for only talking to you now, but there's this girl I like-no, I love her! And well, it's kinda stupid of me to say this, because you know, 'cuz you created us and shit, but...could you maybe bring us together? I'll also try my best in becoming a muslim!"

He just hopes his prayers were heard

Eid-Adha came and you were busy as heck

you didn't have time to pick up kakucho's phone (let's imagine they have phones in that timeline) because of making all the food and cleaning up the house

boy did he get worried

he was already by your door and ready to know when his phone rang

it was you

he didn't even let it ring the second time and picked up the call

"Y-yeah?"

"Kakucho? Are you alright? Why did you call me so often? Did something happen?"

Again, he relished the fact that you were worried about him

"Ah, it's nothing, I was just asking you if you'd like to hang out with me today?"

"I'm sorry, but I'm still preparing the food for our holiday!"

"Oh! I'm sorry! I totally forgot about it-"

"Hey boy, stop standing in the way!", a male interrupted

the man was carrying a cut sheep

Kakucho thought about punching the man but started helping him when he remembered in front of who's house he stood

'if that guy is her father, then I have to leave the best first impressions!'

Kakucho. You were still in your gang uniform. YOU HAVE A SCAR ON YOUR FACE.

But the man didn't let a single emotion be noticed than hard work and fatigue, so he didn't really fight the delinquent who shockingly offered his help in a sweet tone and nice smile

"Dad, you're late- Kakucho?!", you yelped.

"You two know each other?", your mother chimed in as she examined the boy who was now standing with the cut sheep, your father let himself fall on a leathered chair

"Yeah, he's the one who saved me from the bad guys!"

'YOU TOLD THEM ABOUT ME?!?!?'

his day couldn't get any better

"Hello, my name is Kakucho, and I'm glad I could help, I'll be taking my leave now-"

"Stay."

Kakucho and you looked at your dad with surprised faces

"Who'll help me cut it into smaller pieces? My wife is tired and my daughter is not strong enough"

of course you objected because well, you're a girlboss/feminist

but eh

let the men do something for a change

and that's how kakucho ended up laughing at your parents stories of you being the clumsiest baby they had, with you dying out of embarrassment of course

your dad took him out for a moment

"Do you like me daughter?"

ran could've been a little dissappointed in himself for not knowing that shop, but oh well

this 'gentleman' told you to follow him

you were shocked but also happy

and you guys actually made it to the shop

this is the second part of five stages of confusion

1. why is there a different smell in every direction he breathes?

3. why are there sausages, onions and fish hanging from the ceiling?

4. why was there a cat on the cash register?

an elder man came to view and you bowed politely

ran felt somewhat out of place when you talked to the grandpa in a foreign language

the man studied your paper and put everything you needed in a bag

then he said something which made you mad

you quickly fished out your money and slammed it on the counter

the man yelled something

you yelled something

you pushed ran out of the shop

you ran out

but not before petting the sweet cat, which purred in return

and you sighed angrily

"uhm...what was that??"

"he didn't want to accept the money."

"so? good for you."

"wha- no! I was the first customer there. He had this shop only opened recently. and I felt pity on him, so I gave him thrice from the actual price I had to pay."

"why?"

"Because that's what people from my family do!"

He didn't understand you

but he wanted to get to know you more

so he tried to accompany you as much as possible

and well, you two became friends

and you talked about your religion a lot

ran liked that about you

that you were a kind young lady, who only wanted the best for everybody

but he froze when you once spilled the tea about one od your cousins from your dad's side

"and she wants to marry an American, I mean, can you believe it?!"

"wait, what's so special about it? I mean, if she loves him, then...you know...?"

"Yes, but he is not muslim. And he doesn't want to convert to Islam. That's the problem."

"...I don't- I don't understand-"

"A muslim woman has to marry a muslim man. This is tradition and religion."

You heard puking sounds and you gagged as well, but you also chuckled.

"I c r i e d when I saw the head. I don't wanna suffer alone, love."

please just pretend they all have phones.

"Also do you wanna eat? I made food. It's our holiday after all!!!"

of course she came over

But she was mad surprised when she saw the amount of food there

she's never seen so different looking stuff

she wanted to eat something from every plate

but full.

Defiant acts of celebration broke out in Iran as state television broadcasted footage of mourning following the death of president Ebrahim Raisi in a helicopter crash.

Fireworks were set off in several cities on Monday night and some people posted videos of themselves dancing in the streets early on Tuesday.

However, the open displays of celebration were limited as dissent is often met with a strict crackdown by the hardline regime.

In one video showing fireworks, a woman’s voice can be heard saying: “People are rejoicing at the downfall of Raisi.”

“People are celebrating and I congratulate the president’s death,” said another man over another clip. “I hope the rest of them die too.”

People in the capital Tehran told The Telegraph there was a heavy presence of armed security forces in several neighbourhoods.

“I went up to the roof last night, and there were fireworks in several parts of the city,” a resident of Karaj, near the capital Tehran, said.

“I also heard people chanting ‘death to the dictator’ somewhere close by,” he added.

Many Iranians celebrated in secret and some people told the Telegraph they stayed awake waiting for “good news to come out of the mountains”.

“I was on my phone all night and when I finally saw the news, I jumped from bed and started dancing,” a man in Tehran said.

“I went to a nearby shop, and it was incredible. The shopkeeper, whom I know, gave me a free cigarette and said, ‘Let’s hope for more crashes like this’,” he said.

The mother of a Kurdish prisoner executed earlier this year posted a video of herself dancing upon hearing the news of Raisi’s death.

A shopkeeper in central Isfahan said he experienced a surge in selling sweets on Monday as people “keep coming to celebrate”.

“It’s very strange and good, people come and congratulate me for the death of Raisi,” he said. “It’s been a long time since I saw something like this.”

“Many are hiding their happiness because they are afraid of government spies and worried about the subsequent consequences,” he added.

On Monday afternoon, state TV continued to broadcast scenes of mourning and tearful individuals.

“I don’t know what to say,” said a crying man. “I’m shocked, and I hope God helps people in these grieving times,” said another.

“He lost his life while serving the nation, which made me very sad,” said a man in a mosque where people had gathered to mourn. “He held a special place in people’s hearts.”

Mourning songs and live footage of memorials played continuously on several state channels.

Many changed their logos to black and aired tributes about how “beloved and close to the people the martyred president” was, highlighting that he lost his life on the “flight of service”.

“The president set new benchmarks for good governance, and we hope his legacy continues,” a presenter said. “He accomplished significant feats and would have achieved even more if given more time.”

“He was a soldier of the Supreme Leader, and anyone who respected the Supreme Leader respected him as well. He was dedicated to the development of Iran,” an analyst said on state TV.

Iran’s president and his foreign minister were confirmed dead after the helicopter they were travelling in crashed in a mountainous region during bad weather on Sunday evening.

Rescuers reached the wreckage early Monday morning after a desperate search mission hampered by rain, fog and snow.

Mr Raisi won Iran’s closely stage-managed 2021 presidential election, a vote marked by the lowest turnout in the Islamic Republic’s history.

His victory brought all branches of power under the control of hardliners, after eight years in which the presidency had been held by Hassan Rouhani, a pragmatist who entered into a nuclear deal with Washington.

“These three years of Raisi were like a nightmare,” said a woman in her late 20s in northwestern Mashhad, Raisi’s hometown.

“I do not expect any big change to happen now, at least we can hope,” she added.

Under the code name “Noor” or “light” in Farsi, the Islamic Republic has intensified a clampdown on anyone violating its draconian female dress codes.

The morning sun cast a gentle glow on the quiet street as the lady prepared to open her shop. Among the familiar sights, an unusual sight caught her eye—a letter accompanied by a joker toy and some money. Her curiosity piqued, she furrowed her brows and reached for the mysterious items.

As she unfolded the letter, the words revealed a tale of redemption that unfolded many years ago.

MANY YEARS AGO , I HAD STOLEN THIS TOY FROM YOUR SHOP. I APOLOGIZE FOR THAT. HERE'S THE TOY AND THE MONEY FOR THAT. I HOPE YOU FORGIVE ME.

The lady's initial confusion transformed into a warm smile as she absorbed the essence of the letter's sincerity.Without a word, the lady closed the door behind her, leaving the street outside to the whispers of a gentle breeze.

Tahira stood at a distance, observing the scene unfolding near the shop. Today marked the day she relinquished the last stolen item she had been carrying with her—a symbolic act that lifted the weight of her past sins. A serene smile adorned her lips, reflecting the internal peace she felt at finally being liberated from the burdens of her transgressions.

As she placed a gentle hand on her stomach, Tahira addressed the life growing within her. "Little baby, never stray from the path of righteousness. Always heed the commands of Allah Ta'ala and follow the sunnah of our Prophet Muhammad (sallallahu alaihi wa sallam)," she advised with a tender tone, instilling words of guidance to her unborn child. Turning away from the scene, she spoke softly to her baby, "Now, let's go. Your father and siblings are waiting." Tahira began walking, the rhythmic sway of her steps carrying a sense of newfound freedom.

Sisters, I need help. Lately I’ve become obsessed with khimar. They look so pretty! I keep watching YouTube videos of khimar tutorials, khimar hauls, etc.

It got to the point where I thought of buying one, but I’m not sure if they’re my style. They are so pretty and flowy, and I like that you can tie them “inside” or “outside” to create two different looks, but they’re also more conservative and … idk I have trouble envisioning myself wearing one? It’s so different from the hijabs I wear now. I even thought about photoshopping my face onto khimar product photos just to get a better sense of it, but I didn’t do that lmao. I’m also interested in the built in niqab. I don’t know if I would have the confidence to wear it, but I want to try. Right now I just wear masks a lot.

So since I wasn’t sure if it was my style, I thought I could maybe try looking for a store that sold them and try them on in person, but of course no luck finding a store near me. The closest (and only) I could find was at least 8h by car away.

But, to my huge surprise, I found several online shops that not only deliver to my country, they even send from right here! So the delivery costs are very low and there is no import tax and it would be very easy to return. I compared several stores and found one I could buy from. I selected two khimar, one longer double-layered black one, and one shorter khimar in blue. The prices are affordable, and as I said I could return them with low delivery fees. Should I do it?

I don’t know why I am so nervous, to be honest. For whatever reason it feels like such a big step? Like a stronger commitment to hijab or Islam? Please send me reassurances or advice

In the days since the March 22 terrorist attack on a concert at the Crocus City Hall near Moscow, there has been a growing wave of threats, physical abuse, and harassment from law enforcement and ordinary citizens against Central Asian diasporas across Russia.

The attack, which claimed at least 144 lives and was allegedly conducted by four Tajik nationals with ties to the Islamic State-Khorasan, has resulted in a vicious spike in the xenophobia and discrimination that have defined the lives of migrants in Russia for decades. Both the government and law enforcement have been actively fanning the flames of this hatred, in ways that ultimately serve Russia’s narratives around its invasion of Ukraine.

Last week, a shopping pavilion owned by Central Asian migrants was burned down in the city of Blagoveshchensk on the Russia-China border. In Kaluga, southwest of Moscow, a group of unknown perpetrators beat up three Tajik citizens on the street, one of whom was later hospitalized. Migrants from Kyrgyzstan were reportedly held at Sheremetyevo Airport outside Moscow for two days only to be later returned home. There are reports from across Russia that customers are refusing the services of taxi drivers of Tajik nationality. Kyrgyzstan already has called on its citizens not to travel to Russia, and the Tajik Embassy in Russia has told its nationals in the country to stay at home.

“This is the worst life in Russia has ever been,” Muboris, a Moscow-based cook from northern Tajikistan, told us over the Telegram messaging app. “My manager texted me saying he doesn’t need no terrorists at his restaurant and that he will stop paying me.”

“Now any offers to do [construction work] immediately stop as soon as employers learn I am from Tajikistan,” said Sadriddin, who has been living in Russia for more than a decade and who asked over Telegram not to use his real name. “I have some savings to wait this out, but they won’t last long, and I need to feed my family back home.”

Unable to find gainful employment in their economically stagnant countries, Central Asians go to Russia to search for work. According to Russian Interior Ministry data, labor migration from Central Asia hit a five-year high in 2022, with as many as 978,000 Kyrgyz, 3.5 million Tajiks, and 5.8 million Uzbeks entering Russia intending to work. In recent years, remittances (mainly from Russia) have totaled the equivalent of a third of Tajikistan’s GDP and a quarter of Kyrgyzstan’s. But while Russia remains a popular destination, migrants there have long faced issues from wage theft and ruthless bureaucracy to daily abuse, discrimination, and even death threats from law enforcement and ordinary Russians alike—and now it is only getting worse.

Valentina Chupik, a recognized human rights lawyer and the director of a Russia-focused migrant rights group, reported that she has received more than 2,500 calls from migrants in Russia since the terrorist attack complaining about illegal detentions and searches. Police raided facilities across Russia associated with migrant workers and detained dozens of people on suspicion of breaking migration laws. Members of the Russian parliament immediately called for further limits on migration from Central Asia, and a source at Russia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs told the media that the government may tighten control over migrants.

Police raids on establishments that employ migrants and occasional spikes in anti-migrant rhetoric among government officials are common in Russia. While the authorities’ response is clearly aimed at projecting strength to a domestic audience—and simultaneously deflecting attention from their failure to prevent the attack—the corollary effect has been the continued normalization of violence against those who represent the proverbial “other”—the central figure in the worldview that sustains Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Despite the Islamic State-Khorasan claiming responsibility for the attack and the United States warning the Russian government about the likelihood of such an attack just a few weeks ago, the Russian government immediately tied the attack to the Ukrainian government and its Western partners. In his first remarks following the attack, Russian President Vladimir Putin alleged without any evidence that Kyiv had provided a “window” on the Russia-Ukraine border to enable the attackers to try to escape.

In subsequent comments on March 25, Putin, while acknowledging the role of the Islamic State-Khorasan in the attack, doubled down on allegations that Ukraine played a role and said the United States was “using every channel to try to convince its satellites and other countries … that there is supposedly no indication of involvement by Kyiv.” And he suggested that the attack was part of what he described as efforts by Ukraine, “carrying out the orders of its Western handlers,” to “sow panic” in Russia as Moscow’s forces are making gains in its invasion. Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, now deputy chairman of Russia’s Security Council, wrote in his Telegram channel that if Kyiv’s involvement in the attack were revealed, “the terrorists themselves, as well as Ukrainian officials, must be destroyed.”

By simultaneously blaming the Islamic State, Ukraine, and the West, the Kremlin perpetuates the idea of “fortress Russia,” besieged on all sides. Regardless of who was behind the attack, the Kremlin “needed” it, Ukrainian sociologist Oleksandr Shulga said. Given the war’s duration and its negative impact on the Russian economy, he said, the Kremlin can no longer galvanize public support with the promise of rapid victory or material gain. And so they have fallen back on fear: “They need to replace mundane everyday life problems with something at the level of instinct and survival,” Shulga said.

Racism and xenophobia are embedded in much of Russian society, and in this case that has somewhat cut against the authorities’ preferred narrative. The authorities identified the suspects as Tajik nationals, but official statements, such as that of Federal Security Service head Alexander Bortnikov, have emphasized the purported culpability of Ukraine and its Western allies rather than the ethnicity of the suspected attackers. Nonetheless, the responses of ordinary citizens reveal the long-standing, visceral racism against non-ethnic Russians. Popular reactionary Telegram channels, many of which have thousands of subscribers, repeatedly mention the suspects’ Tajik nationality, employing heavily racialized and dehumanizing language. On March 25, popular pro-war author Alexander Lyubimov published a diatribe referring to Tajiks as “barbarians” and “not human.”

Violence—particularly the spectacle of violence—both real and symbolic is inherent to fascist regimes such as Russia’s and has defined the Russian authorities’ response to the attack. Images of the obviously tortured suspects have flooded official channels and the pro-war ecosystem on Telegram. One popular video shows a man in camouflage cutting off the right ear of Rajab Alizade, one of the suspects, and forcing the severed flesh into his mouth.

On March 23, another pro-war channel posted a video showing one of the suspects, whose face shows signs of beating, in a hospital bed being interrogated by an unknown man. The caption reads: “Interrogation of the beast in the hospital.” The comments reveal a rampant thirst for violence. “Putin, bring back the death penalty—and make it public,” one reads. “Cut off the ear of this one, too!” another reads. Another commenter calls on the interrogator to “hang him by the balls and break his fingers.”

This dehumanizing language echoes that which the same posters, as well as state media propagandists, use toward Ukrainians. While Tajiks and Ukrainians are two very distinct groups, the normalization—indeed, glorification—of violence against one group sustains the mindset that allows for violence against the other. Medvedev again wrote in his Telegram channel that Russia “will avenge everyone [killed in the attack], and everyone involved [in organizing the attack], regardless of country of origin and status, is now our legal and main goal. Watch out, bastards.”

“[Medvedev’s words] signal that almost everything is possible, everything is permitted, and this is very alarming,” said Stephania Kulaeva of the Anti-Discrimination Center Memorial.

While the 144 concert-goers were the first victims of the terrorist attack, they will not be the last. Central Asians in Russia—and, indeed, anyone who is not an ethnic Russian—are now suffering an even higher rate of attacks and harassment. This is the result of a deeply entrenched imperial worldview in which those not part of the empire’s ethnic core are seen at best as expendable and at worst as nonhumans who deserve the violence to which they are subjected.

In Ukraine, Russian soldiers, driven by this mindset, continue to kill service members and civilians alike, propelled by anti-Ukrainian hatred that the Kremlin’s response to the Crocus City Hall attack will only exacerbate. Immediately after the terrorist attack, Russia stepped up its bombardment of Ukraine, hitting Kyiv for the first time in six weeks. In Putin’s Russia, violence always begets further violence.

“My grandmother has lived there her whole life,” Martín said, his eyes finding mine in the rear-view mirror. “And even she leaves Granada in August.”

The sharp edges of the Sierra Nevada slowly lifted itself from the surface of the Earth, welcoming our approach into the city.

“I’ve lived in hot. I can do hot. I’m sure everything will be fine,” I responded.

The eyes in the mirror wrinkled, and my companion gave me an acquiescent little smile before returning his gaze to the road. Martín had offered me a ride down south after he had found me slumped on a kerbside near the Parada de Autobús in Getafe. I had missed my bus to Granada, so I supposed he could be forgiven for feeling a little sceptical.

He was travelling to Granada to pick up some of his grandmother’s belongings, he had said, before him and his family took to the south coast of Spain. He went there every August for its cool ocean breezes, affordable accommodation, and — at least for Martín — the entertainment of seeing scores of tourists pink like lobsters and staggering around on the streets. They were always “borracho y quemado” he told me gleefully when I asked him what his plans were for summer. Drunk and burned.

When we arrived at my accommodation we said our goodbyes, but not before a final warning from Martín. He slapped me on the shoulder and reminded me that August was for “sitting and drinking, not walking and seeing”, before throwing me a bottle of water he bought from a shop nearby. But after checking in, I set out immediately. I had come to Granada with a specific goal in mind, and I was eager to go out and meet it.

The Alhambra was the fortified jewel of the Nasrid empire. The Iberian Peninsula had been under Islamic rule for seven-hundred years and the influence of that time dominated the city, overwhelming the usual Gothic architecture of Spain. Nowhere in Granada was this Middle Eastern presence felt more than beyond the walls of the Alhambra.

The fortress sits atop a hill overlooking the span of the city and stares eye to eye with the Sierra Nevada nearby. Me, alongside thousands of others just like me, laid our assault on the palace walls. No doubt reminiscent of the oncoming hordes that had done the same in centuries gone by.

Once inside, the Alhambra welcomed us graciously. Luminous wisteria rippled in the breeze and a mist rose from the water features that wound their way through the grounds, kissing at my skin and providing a respite from the sun outside the palace. I found a shady alcove to slump myself into, and I wondered if this was the last sight an invader would have seen. Exhausted and thirsty, lulled into tranquillity by the neat garden, soothed by the trickling water of the streams. Their laxity paid back in full with a sabre in the spine, victims of the Alhambra’s charm.

The stone cornices that made up the alcove were etched with verses of Arabic and my eyes followed the elegant lines, licks of calligraphy twisting and winding their way into my mind. I was drawn to a piece that graced the archway in front of me, and the plaque nearby translated its intentions.

There is no Victor but God, it read.

My heart thudded in my chest. A medieval fear coursed its way through the centuries.

Something ancient had burrowed its way into my viscera. How many like me had died in this alcove? Poisoned by the enhancements that laced the foundations of the Alhambra.

The heat and thirst were making me delirious. I greedily finished the last of Martín’s bottle of water and stood to my feet with a last ounce of energy. As I moved, the metal armour shifted heavily on my torso and the weapon at my side clanged in protest. I thought of the others that had failed, hypnotised by Moorish spells. But not me. I was a Castilian soldier. This was my last assault on the palace. I marched forward, staggering and uneasy on my feet, with cowardly Nasrid foot soldiers gawking and wailing from every direction. I mounted the steps that approached the palace entrance and looked up at the arched doorway. It was interwoven with mosaics and jewels which shone in the sunlight, hinting at the MiddleEastern riches that lay just ahead. I shoved open the ornate doors, slamming them against the stone frame. Unstoppable.

My eyes darted around the room, finding walls lined with stacks of jewels and gold. Spices from every corner of the Islamic empire singed at my nostrils, and I bounded into the room hungrily. I turned to lunge at a pile of gold in the corner, but felt nothing but the thud of my head on the dense stone wall. A pile of blood red rubies stacked as high as the Sierra Nevada called to me from the other side of the chamber and I staggered over, unbalanced feet slapping at the tiles below. I clawed at the rubies, begging to satisfy my desire, but claiming only fistfuls of air in the process. I looked around wildly. The bounty that I so painfully sought after was slowly fading away.

I was growling in frustration when my vision began to blur. My body went limp and I hit the floor with a dull thud. A fog of unrecognisable figures swarmed all around me and shouts of agua could be heard.

In my fading vision I saw a man sitting in the Islamic throne that graced the centre of the room. The glint of a familiar pair of eyes glared at me from above his fixed smile. Smugness. It seemed there was nothing in the world funnier than this. Yet another foreigner, yet another failure.

The face of Martín broke into a roar of laughter, his face contorted. “Always borracho y quedmado,” he said, cackling.

this is a very valid and normal feeling, even for people who are born muslim, so you’re definitely not alone in how you feel.

for making ramadan special alone:

try and set daily goals that you want to work on every day during ramadan. do you want to finish the Qur’an from start to finish and have a set amount of pages to read per day? do you want to do a specific amount of dhikr each day? giving yourself something to work towards can help you enjoy your own company while you work on yourself alone

decorate your room !! fairy lights, moon and star stickers etc. there are lots of ramadan decor ideas you can search for on pinterest, that’s definitely my go-to. decorating your home or room can make you feel happier in your own company, spending time there by yourself in worship as it’s nice to look at and be in

Allah says, when talking about ramadan, “The month of Ramadan is that in which the Qur’an was sent down as a guidance for mankind with clear proofs of guidance and discrimination. Therefore, whosoever of you is present at home in this month, let him fast therein. But whoso is sick or is on a journey, shall fast the same number of other days. Allah desires to give you facility and He desires not hardship for you, and that you may complete the number, and that you may exalt Allah for His having guided you and that you may be grateful. And when My servants ask you about Me, say: ‘I am near. I answer the prayer of the supplicant when he prays to Me. So they should hearken to Me and believe in Me, that they may follow the right way.” (2:186-187). the fact that He says ‘I am near’ right after talking about ramadan and fasting shows that you won’t be alone, He is telling you that He is close even when you feel lonely. try and find comfort in that and spend time with Him during ramadan. really try and feel His presence there with you. sit on your prayer mat after you pray to do some dhikr — or, remain seated and do anything else too! sometimes, when I’ve finished praying, I like to bring my laptop and do some work while I’m still sitting on my prayer mat to feel like I’m still in the company of Allah سُبْحَٰنَهُۥ وَتَعَٰلَىٰ. talk to Him too, out loud or in your heart, and really make Him your Friend. i can guarantee that this will definitely make you feel less alone and feel happier that you’re in the company of Allah. when you recite Qur’an out loud too, the angels come down and listen. so when you do read Qur’an throughout ramadan, know that there are many angels in the room with you!

there are also lots of muslim discord groups that you can join and talk to other fellow muslims - i’m sure many are in the same boat as you and you can make lots of virtual friendships there as well Insha’Allah.

is there a mosque or an islamic centre near you? you can also visit there and, maybe—you never know!— after seeing familiar faces every day, you might end up making friends!

if anything, i’ll be doing my ramadan challenge and you can do it with me too if you’d like :) that way we’ll be doing the same things together ♡

as for celebrating Eid alone:

spending time by yourself that day can still be really fun. what do you like doing? going for a walk? going shopping? what are your favourite movies? make a whole list of things you’re going to do on the day— a whole packed itinerary of things you love. maybe you’ll wake up and pray and go to the mosque? then you’ll go to a cafe or get some brunch or buy some boba and treat yourself. then maybe you’ll come home and cook some lovely food or order your favourite takeout and light some candles, watch your favourite movie, put on a face mask. something like that! you can still make it a fun day out for yourself and treat yourself.

although you don’t have many muslim friends, if you have other non-muslim friends, you could perhaps still enjoy with them? i almost wasn’t able to go home to my family (as I live on campus at university) this year so, i know my muslim friends are going to be busy with their families, but my other friends who are christian saw that I was sad that I was going to be alone for eid and told me they’d celebrate it with me and dress up, try and cook asian food for me hahah and watch a movie with me. now, alhamdulillah, i am able to go home to my family for eid Insha’Allah but my point is, if you have other close friends who aren’t muslim and they know how much it means to you, perhaps tell them that you’d really like to spend the day with them so that you feel less alone on the day

overall, the main thing i’d say is to enjoy being in the company of Allah سُبْحَٰنَهُۥ وَتَعَٰلَىٰ and really feel His presence, and also to set goals that you can work on during ramadan and feel comfortable in your own company as well. either way, it will boost your spirituality. I pray that you feel happy throughout ramadan rather than lonely and that your struggles bring you closer to Allah سُبْحَٰنَهُۥ وَتَعَٰلَىٰ and His Mercy, Ameen. if you need any further tips, do send me another ask!! ♡
