Many Voices United As One
The political left is missing a central voice, a central unified message.
tRumpism provides a unified identity. There is no message, just an identity where there is only binary based evangelical beliefs where no one is responsible for anyone else and no one is correcting language usage or calling out hateful bigoted rhetoric. They want to say and do and believe whatever they want.
The Civil Rights Movement had a central unified focus, to give African Americans the same citizenship rights that whites took for granted. Many other equal rights movements grew during this time period: including the Black Power Movement, Women's Movement, American Indian Movement, Rainbow "Power", and the Independent Living Movement.
With all these movements, there was still that central unified message demanding Civil Rights, justice, equality, and accessibility.
Most of our leaders from the Civil Rights Era have passed on. We need a unified voice.
Right now, the more liberal leaning movement is fractured along the more progressive younger side and the more lived experience side.
There seems to be many younger people who are bitter. They feel that the world never gave them a chance to even try to achieve a job or buy a home. Gen Z and younger Milennials have basically been told that they are screwed.
Many older people are used to doing things by themselves.
Baby Boomers grew up during the turbulent 60s and 70s. Their parents dealt with the depression and WWII. When the Baby Boomers were growing up, the economy was thriving and factory jobs could be easily found. Baby Boomers could buy homes and build equity. That world doesn't exist anymore.
Growing up, Gen Xers were left to fend for themselves. They basically raised themselves and were expected to just figure life out. They are the children of those who were young during the Civil Rights Era and those who fought in Vietnam. Gen Xers were the lackey kids where both parents worked outside the home. Surviving is what Gen Xers know how to do.
Older Milennials lean more towards how Gen Xers are.
There are generational rifts and no focus, no unified voice to pull people together.
Younger people don't seem to understand that change takes time. Things don't change instantly. Social movements take time and effort. It is about the long haul, not the instant gratification. It is about patience, assertiveness, and understanding.
It is also about not attacking people who don't agree with you or who don't agree with everything in the manner that you want them to.
Holding healthy boundaries is key. There are lines that should not be crossed. Addressing misconceptions is important, but there are people who are determined to not budge no matter what.
Lots of people in this country have been experiencing the Dunning-Kruger Effect. Many want the easy route. And soooo many don't understand what a credible source is and get much of their information, or should I say misinformation, from social media. They also want someone to blame.
There are way too many people who don't understand how things work yet insist that they do. This is a huge problem. They want to feel that they have some sort of control in an ever changing world that they don't understand.
tRumpism gives them that easy route, that sense of control, someone to blame, and the promise that things will go back to a time when they understood the world.
It is all an illusion, but an illusion that tRump supporters have united in.
The more liberal leaning side does not have an anchor.
There is no leader who is seen extreme enough for progressive liking. There are people on the left who want the illusion as well, just a different illusion.
They are against war. They want more humanitarian aid. They want the Green Deal. They want racism, ableism, and bigotry shutdown. They want the language usage changed. They want affordable homes and medical care available to everyone. And they want all this now!
The left has fractured along generational lines and there is nothing currently available that can mend that fracture.
We need to unite under that same focus that was present during the Civil Rights Era - Civil Rights, justice, equality, and accessibility for all!
This needs to be a grassroots effort as it was before, only this time we need to add climate change initiatives, because climate change and human rights are closely linked.
Intersectional approaches need to be used in this grassroots effort.
We need to unite as one voice!! That is how we fight tRumpism.

I do think that you should mostly still listen to BDS as far as companies to boycott go, because companies like Re/Max and AXA directly profit from the occupation. The movement in general also has widespread support among Palestinians which should not be ignored. Boycotts, divestment, and sanctions are effective non-violent methods of ending colonial violence.
However, I find what BDS in general defines as “normalization” to be flighty at best and harmful at worst. BDS actively dismissing joint Israeli-Palestinian peace activist groups like OneVoice and Standing Together serves what purpose exactly?
The arguments I’ve seen against these groups range from “they support a two state solution” to “they don’t acknowledge the reality of the power imbalance between Israel and Palestine”. The first argument is true at times, but a lot of people are looking at solutions based on a more practical view rather than what is ideal or even fair. Personally, I’m in support of a single binational secular state with equality for all citizens and proportional representation in government, but that’s just me. I understand why so many people see the two state solution as more viable, though.
As for the second accusation, I don’t think it’s true. I do think that these groups are willing to acknowledge the violence done by Hamas, for example, and the losses suffered by Israelis, which maybe is what makes people annoyed. But it’s not a zero sum game. It’s a fact that innocent civilians have been kidnapped and murdered by Hamas. It’s also a fact that the IDF is an occupying colonial force with extensive and sophisticated weaponry and a large budget, while Hamas is a comparatively small militia.
The other argument I see is that these groups are too naive, that they don’t see reality. But I think it’s the opposite; I don’t think anyone who’s actually lived through this violence can be seen as naive. I think it’s a genuine recognition that this cannot last forever, that neither Jews nor Palestinians will leave, and therefore the only thing to do is to figure out a way to coexist peacefully.
It would be one thing if BDS said “we are ideologically opposed to these groups and choose not to actively support them”. But they and their supporters have made them out to be like covert liberal Zionists who are trying to trick activists. It’s absurd, these groups are pretty transparent and open about their goals and ideology.
I’m not saying you have to support Standing Together, or even agree with them. But to dismiss them completely is foolish and, in my opinion, counterproductive.

A Sign Of Love
Tumblr media
A/N: italics represent flashbacks
You watched your boyfriend’s band play from the left wing of the stage. Every bang of the drums could be felt in your chest, every strum of the strings brought an odd tingling sensation to the tips of your fingers. You pressed your hand against one of the pulsating speakers, a soft smile stretching your lips as you felt the rhythm in your bones.
Calum’s eyes met yours with a large grin on his face once the song ended, his hands quickly signing “I love you.” With a cheesy smile you signed the words back at the man, his lips blowing you a kiss in response before returning his attention back to the show.
Sunlight warmed the breeze that brushed past your skin, fallen leaves soaring through the streets. The park bench felt cold against your legs as you waited for your charming date to show up.
It was your first date. The first after the man tried to chat you up at a party weeks ago, only to find out that the loud music was not the cause for his words being unheard. This fact did not deter him as Calum still seemed adamant to talk to you, eager enough to swipe your phone from your hands and make your contact list grow. Eager enough to fill each other’s notifications with messages for weeks. Eager enough to ask you out.
Clammy hands held your phone as you checked the time over and over, a dictation app ready to be used. A rose suddenly hung over the screen, gaze rising to meet a smiling Calum who held the flower out for you. You noticed the notebook held under his arm.
You grasped the flower with a small smile and stood up to greet him with a quick hug.
“Hi,” you said, phone ready to catch the next words he spoke. Instead a look of concentration overtook his face as he slowly signed ‘Hello, you look beautiful.’ Heat rose to your cheeks as he grinned down at you, nodding as though to emphasise his point.
You just smiled and looked down at the rose between your fingers, excited for what the rest of the afternoon could hold.
A sweaty Calum engulfed you in his arms, still bouncing off of the adrenaline from the show he just finished. Your nose scrunched up at the smell though your arms still encircled his torso, holding him tight. Only when a water bottle was thrown towards him did he relinquish his grip.
‘You did great, baby,’ you signed after he downed half of the bottle in one gulp. His lips formed a ‘thanks’ with a joyful look in his eyes before grabbing your cheeks, pulling you closer to meet his lips. One kiss turned into two then three then four before you pressed your hands against his chest to push him away, his lips still chasing yours as you pulled back. ‘You stink, shower first, then we’ll see,’ you signed to your boyfriend who nodded in defeat before a mischievous look filled his eyes. ‘Join me?’
Were you born deaf?” Calum asked one day as you laid side by side beneath the summer night, months of dating behind you.
In all of this time he had always been attentive and supportive, treating you as normally as he possibly could. You could tell he had been secretly taking a sign language course as his skills improved every week, your heart filling with something you had never felt as you saw how much effort he was putting into being able to talk to you. And yet he had never dared to ask the big question, too scared of offending or upsetting you by mentioning the disability that has shaped you into the person you are today.
You read the words as they came up on the screen of your phone, glancing at him briefly before turning back to face the stars.
“Nope. I mean, I was always deaf in my left ear, but I could easily get away with it and live life as normal, if anything sharing headphones was the only trouble. But then one morning I woke up and with a slight ringing in my right ear. A ringing that went on and on and wouldn’t stop. And I couldn’t stop it, no matter how strongly I hit the walls and anything around me, desperate to hear anything else. This obviously alarmed my parents who came rushing in but I didn’t even notice until my dad grabbed me by the shoulders to force me to stop. I watched as his lips kept moving but no sounds came out. Nothing, Cal, not even a whisper,” you told your boyfriend as your eyes welled up with tears. He noticed this and wrapped his arms around you to pull you into his chest, hand stroking your head comfortingly. “The next thing I remember was being in A&E for ages and a couple doctors testing my ears. Eventually one of them handed me a piece of paper that said ‘sudden sensorineural hearing loss.’ The cause hasn’t been identified, but basically there is something wrong with the sensory organs of my inner ear so they can’t detect sound. They said that it was good that I had been diagnosed early and that treatment with corticosteroids would be able to bring my hearing back, but I wasn’t so lucky. So no, I wasn’t born deaf, but that’s my story.”
Calum pressed a kiss to your head and took your phone-clutched hand, kissing it too before grasping the device. He returned it after typing a message and sat up in front of you. ‘Thank you for sharing that with me. I know it must have been difficult but I appreciate you opening up, and I am so incredibly proud of how far you’ve come since that fateful morning.’ A small smile sat on your lips as you read the text, sitting up to face him too.
‘I love you,’ he signed, vulnerability in his eyes as he awaited any kind of response from you. Your smile widened in joy and surprise at his confession. Hands reaching out to intertwine with his, you carefully uttered the words back. Hearing your words made him grin from ear to ear, hands squeezing yours before leaning forwards to give you the most loving of all kisses. His soft lips melted into yours as he reached to gently place his hand on your cheek.
The night was perfect. He was perfect.
Celebratory beers were passed around the backstage dressing room followed by what you presumed were cheers. You chuckled lightly to yourself as you watched the scene, thinking of how oxymoronic your relationship was. One who devoted their life to creating music and sound and the other who couldn’t hear. With a tap to the shoulder Calum refocused your attention to him, signing a ‘you alright?’ with a slightly concerned expression.
You nodded with a smile, looking down at the silver ring on your finger before signing back your reply.
‘I’m happy.’
A/N: I have written this piece for the project ‘DisabledSOS’ organised by @skinnylukes ! This project aims to support and spread awareness about 5SOS fans with disabilities, chronic illnesses, and other health conditions. Carly brought back this movement specifically to bring about more disability-inclusive writing to tumblr and our fandom as I know that most writers (including myself) don’t tend to cater our pieces to this audience. I was really excited when she asked me to join the event and I hope i did it justice! Be sure to check out the #disabledsos tag for other fics/blurbs like this!
Inspired by Season 5 of Skam France, which deals with a normal teenager who experiences sudden hearing loss and has to learn to adapt to his new life. You can watch without seeing the other seasons, each season is based around a different central character and you see everything through their eyes so most things that happened previously are not necessary to follow the show. I truly recommend it!!

Been working on Caleb Shepard's playlist for his Mass Effect 2 stories tonight. I usually start with previous lists (any Shepard) because many of them cross over between them, and sure enough, I was able to pull about 70 songs just from those. But then I started playing with the recommended section at the bottom of Spotify. Currently sitting at 88... including this gem that I never knew I needed - a group called OneVoice doing a mashup of Radioactive and My Songs Know What You Did In The Dark. (Both are songs on Caleb's list separately)

The History of the Home Composed Song Contest
We need to head back to 1990. This was a year where the Eurovision Song Contest was one of its most historically significant. Held in a soon-to-be defunct Yugoslavia, numerous entries had themes about peace, or the hope for coming together, as Europe’s borders were in the midst of rapid transition. Perhaps this was the inspiration for a new type of Eurovision Song Contest to be created? Our…

I am 34 years old. Almost 35 in 4 month's time. Not married yet , no kids. Just a bunny as housemate 🐰 And I am fine with this, no matter what the society thinks I should be!
But here what's more:
I want the same possibilities to be hired to a new job as a man, since I can be successful as a man. I want to earn a higher salary as a man. I want to have a great carreer as a man. To walk outside in the night with no fear as a man. To be respected for my role, as for a man. To be considered and respected for what I do and not for what I wear.
We are in 2021, so please stop discriminating women! We are limitless and we deserve it! No matter where we do we come from! 🌏🌎🌍
