Heart(s)broken
Tumblr media
I am not ready. I have been dreading this for over a year.
Tumblr media
Nope.
Tumblr media
Nope.
Tumblr media
No thank you, please.
Tumblr media
(Okay, but seriously. You're beaten to hell and are still serving face.)
Tumblr media
Bepo is the bestest boi 😭 Their friendship is so important to me.
Tumblr media
NGL, this is a cool shot.
Tumblr media
Sulong Bepo, let's goooooo!
Tumblr media
😭😭😭😭
Tumblr media
🚨BEPO GRABBED KIKOKU 🚨
Tumblr media
This just... I am still a wreck about this. This man lost his entire family and country when he was 10. He lost the one person who helped him open his heart again when he was 13. He then built up a crew of 20 strong that he sent away to protect them from Dressrosa. And now he's lost them too. Checkered fate indeed.
Tumblr media
Oh, Bepo. You know he's also devastated by leaving the crew behind, but he knows they would want him to get Law out. So all he can do is trust in them. 💔
Tumblr media
Bepo is me, and I am Bepo.
Tumblr media
There goes One Piece, making me cry about a ship again.
I just... Wolf gave Law the Tang when he was 16. It's been his home for a decade. It's the most stable home he's had since before Flevance fell, and now that's gone, too. 💔💔💔
Tumblr media Tumblr media
😭😭😭
Tumblr media
THAT'S WHAT WE'VE BEEN WONDERING FOR THE PAST 400+ DAYS. ODA, I'M BEGGING YOU.
---
Anyway, I wrote a short fic about the aftermath of Winner Island (appropriately titled "Aftermath") after the chapter came out, and my emotions are still pretty much there.

Reminder. Law lost a miriad of love with that loss.
The Tang, beloved home and memento of the first guy after Corazon who was nice to him and saved him again.
His hat, probably the very last thing he still had from Flevance and his first family. (Assuming the post ts hat was made out of the same hat)
His crew, including childhood friends and new friends alike, his family, before the strawhats the only people he cherished and trusted. He even now has to trust them to be okay, that's how much hope they fostered in him.

I've been avoiding episode 1115 for an entire month after it was released and despite reading in the manga about what will transpire, I'm still brokenhearted because the guilt of not being able to protect his ship and crew will flood more questions for Law because surviving yet again has got to be a sick joke from some sort of higher power at a certain point. Is it because he's a D that there's a mysterious force compelling him to survive no matter what? Why him, specifically? If an incurable disease and a limited lifespan was not enough to kill him, if his fate was so checkered to the point that he had to bear witness losing his family, his savior, his home, and his nakamas, what's the point of being alive? He has too much love to give and I won't be surprised if he was already introspecting on the idea that he's like a curse bringing the inevitable to his loved ones because his love was doomed to be tragic and unfortunate.

@1000sunnygo episode 1115 delivered! Thank you, Toei, for the expansion, although I have to change my fics that have Kikoku as absent (probably was in the manga too).

goddamn, but the animators delivered HARD on the blackbeard vs law finale
they made law just as hot as i dreamed they did an awesome job expanding on what we got in the manga, which by nature is always a lot more sparse and leaves a lot to the imagination. but they added so many things that just made the scene even better?? blackbeard walking away after destroying the tang, his crew and him actually looking like theyve been in a rough fight, the added lines and blackbeard reaching for law, the huge elaboration on bepo's sulong fight, bepo turning back and collapsing before forcing himself to get back up again (😭), the reference to how the crew started out, them going under and bepo having to find him again
I'm in love
but seriously i was looking forward to seeing this animated and it more than exceeded my expectations holy shit

No, I'm not okay 😭
I want to see Law smile, laugh and being happy, not sad and beat up.
When I wanted Law back and to see our snow leopard hatless more. I didn't mean like this, Oda. No, no, not Law. Not the Heart Pirates 💔
Episode 1115, I'm not ready!!!! Fuck. T-T
Yes, I'm hugging my kitty Law plush, pouting and crying.
Once again, fuck you, Black Beard!!!!

Post-Winner Island Fic Roundup
Now that the end of the Winner Island fight has been animated, I'm sure there are people looking for some catharsis. I thought I'd round up the fics I've written post-chapter 1081 (and now episode 1115). You'll find a mixture of gen, Heart Pirates-focused and Lawlu fics here:
"Aftermath" (PG | Gen | 1,122 words): The aftermath of the fight at Winner Island.
"The Heart Is a Thing to Be Broken" (PG-13 | Lawlu | 5,514 words): The Straw Hats learn about Winner Island.
"My Heart in Your Hands, My Hands around Your Heart" (PG | Lawlu | 1,908 words): In Luffy's lowest moment, Law takes Luffy's hand and promises that his story will not end.
In Law's lowest moment, Luffy takes Law's hand and promises the same.
"Your Heart, Broken in My Chest"* (PG-13 | Lawlu | 3,661 words): Luffy was far from an expert at having someone else’s heart in his chest, but he was pretty sure what was happening with Torao’s heart wasn’t normal.
AKA, Law and Luffy switched hearts after Wano, and Luffy feels Winner Island happen.
"My Heart, Fragile in Your Hands"* (PG-13 | Lawlu | 2,380 words): “I failed them,” Law whispered, and it felt like a confession—like at church in Flevance. Confession was supposed to absolve someone of their sins, right? He doubted there was a god anywhere who could absolve him of his. And yet, he confessed at the altar of Luffy. “They were my responsibility, and I failed them.”
Or, Law wakes up in the Sunny's infirmary after Winner Island.
"Our Hearts, Made Whole in Each Other"* (PG-13 | Lawlu | 2,312 words): Luffy cupped Law’s cheek with his hand, softly grazing his thumb over a yellowing bruise. “Torao is so pretty,” he said quietly, a note of awe in his voice. Law flushed. “Torao’s heart is beating so fast.”
“Yeah,” Law agreed, swallowing. “It is.” Luffy’s, despite a few flutters, was beating steadily in Law’s chest. Law, on the other hand, felt pinned to the spot, one hand holding Kikoku and the other in Luffy’s grip.
“You should stay.”
Law blinked. “What?”
“You should stay,” Luffy repeated. “On the Sunny. With me."
"From the Ashes" (PG-13 | eventual Lawlu | 3/? | 10,811 words): Blackbeard takes Law and the defeated Heart Pirates captive after their defeat at Winner Island.
"A Thing Both Terrible and Beautiful" (Explicit | Lawlu | 3,525 words): Law wants it rough, wants it to hurt, because it’s what he deserves after losing everything. Again.
Luffy knows he needs something else.
"Cursed"** (PG-13 | Gen | 1,411 words): After Wano, Jean had never been prouder to sport the Heart Pirates Jolly Roger on his back, tattooed over the slave brand that had marked him as cursed for so many years.
But they had failed Law on Winner Island.
Jean had failed him on Winner Island.
"Celebration"** (PG-13 | Gen | 1,689 words): As the Heart and Straw Hat Pirates celebrate the jailbreak of the imprisoned Hearts, Shachi tracks down a guilt-ridden Law and offers his captain some moral support.
"Loyalty"** (PG-13 | Gen | 1,264 words): The only solace the Hearts had after being taken captive by the Blackbeard Pirates was the revelation that Bepo had gotten Law away from the battlefield. They’d all sworn in Wano that they would do whatever it took to protect their self-sacrificing captain, and any of them would have made the same choice, had they been able.
They were the Heart Pirates, and Trafalgar Law was the beating heart at the center of the crew. They would hold out until Law came for them, and they would give the Blackbeard Pirates nothing.
"Night"** (PG-13 | Gen | 1,131 words): Their rescue comes at night.
"Food"** (PG-13 | Gen | 1,217 words): “Sorry for borrowing your kitchen without asking. I just...”
“It’s fine,” Sanji said easily before starting to roll up the cuffs on his sleeves to his elbow. “You wanted to make something for your people, didn’t you?”
“I...” Clione blinked in surprise. “Yeah.”
“I get it,” Sanji said. Once his cuffs were rolled up, he crossed his arms and leaned against the side of the counter. “It’s how people like us show our love, right?” Sanji went on. “Through our cooking.”
"Caught"** (PG-13 | Gen | 1,283 words): Maybe this wasn’t such a bad death, Hakugan thought as he felt darkness beginning to encroach on his vision. He’d been on the crew of a Warlord, had helped in the fight that defeated two Emperors, and had seen more incredible, unbelievable things than he would have once thought possible; it had been a much more fulfilling life than he would have had if he’d stayed in his boring, backwater home in the North Blue.
He would never regret agreeing to join Trafalgar Law all those years ago.
He only hoped that his captain would somehow live on to fight another day; as long as Law lived on, so would the Heart Pirates.
"Lost and Found (You)" (PG-13 | Lawlu | 7,554 words): Five times Law and Luffy almost lost one another and one time they did something about it.
* These fics are in a series and were written for Lawlu Week 2023.
** These fics are in a series and were written for Heart Pirates Week 2024

Slight spoilers for 1115 but happy to have canon animated disabled Kuzan to add on (technically his leg loss is revealed in Film Z but movies aren't canon and I can't get fun gifs from manga pages).
Tumblr media
Love his little "ta-da" arm spread after literally breaking off his prosthetic ice leg. Man spends the first half of this episode alternating between black humor over his injuries, gratuitous drinking and kicking ass.

One Piece and Disability
As a cripple myself I just wanna rant real quick about how much I love the disability rep in One Piece. There are a few key things I love about how Oda includes disability
Disabled people can still be badasses. Chapter 1 Shank's loses his arm, six years later he becomes a Warlord of the Sea. Nekomamushi and Inuarashi both lose limbs and replace them with weapons. Franky just Franky.
Disabled people are badasses but still affected/limited in some way by their disabilities. Shanks is still a terrifying fighter, but Mihawk points out that he is a less capable swordsman then he used to be. Issho is terrifyingly powerful but he is still blind, he does not know what Luffy looks like and mourns it. He can be taken advantage of in a dice game. He can sense the world around him but that doesn't fully make up for the fact he can't see. Whitebeard is under constant medical care, unhooked from his machines he can only fight for so long.
The older you get the more likely you are to become disabled. These people are fighters in a harsh world, the majority of older characters have some form of disability. Lost limbs, illness, cuts and scars that hurt them and impede their abilities. Terrifying badasses who comment about not being able to fight how they used to.
There are a variety of disabilities. Loss limbs, blindness, and illness have been mentioned. It can be argued that every devil fruit user is disabled, since they cannot even have a bath without becoming weak. Those who ate failed smiles, completely unable to properly express their emotions. (This is sticking to canon, not even going into how a lot of the characters show signs of autism, ADHD, anxiety, depression.)
Disabilities can still be an advantage. Spoilers for Wano ahead but one of my favorite fights is Killer vs Hawkins. In a fight that would have caused anyone else to be forced into killing their friend, Killer can safely remove Hawkins arm because Kid doesn't have one.
Tumblr media
I can probably keep going on and on about One Piece disabled characters. The best bit is that Oda is subtle about the disability rep, these characters just exist in this world, they aren't called out as different or special. They just are

An old observation from a japanese youtuber that I've been withholding for this episode's release,
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The difference between Law getting bloodied up until now and his loss against Teach is that here, Law is completely silenced.
Law's cheeky pride is usually full on display when he's down and on the brink of death. Because everything would still be under his control - his plans in motion and his important people away and safe. But this time, Law had no comeback to Teach's taunts. His comfort place and comfort people were taken out in his presence.
It's his first physical and psychological defeat.
