Enzo Anselmo Giuseppe Maria Ferrari, Cavaliere di Gran Croce OMRI, was born on February 20, 1898. Enzo Ferrari was said to have been born on February 18, 1898 in Modena, Italy and that his birth was recorded on February 20 because a heavy snowstorm had prevented his father from reporting the birth at the local registry office; in reality, his birth certificate states he was born on February 20, 1898, while the birth's registration took place on February 24, 1898 and was reported by the midwife. He was an Italian motor racing driver and entrepreneur, the founder of the Scuderia Ferrari Grand Prix motor racing team, and subsequently of the Ferrari automobile marque. He was widely known as "il Commendatore" or "il Drake". In his final years he was often referred to as "l'Ingegnere" (the Engineer) or "il Grande Vecchio (the Great Old Man)".
Ferrari's management style was autocratic and he was known to pit drivers against each other in the hope of improving their performance. Some critics believe that Ferrari deliberately increased psychological pressure on his drivers, encouraging intra-team rivalries and fostering an atmosphere of intense competition for the position of number one driver. "He thought that psychological pressure would produce better results for the drivers," said Ferrari team driver Tony Brooks. "He would expect a driver to go beyond reasonable limits... You can drive to the maximum of your ability, but once you start psyching yourself up to do things that you don’t feel are within your ability it gets stupid. There was enough danger at that time without going over the limit."
During the late 1950s and 1960s seven Ferrari drivers were killed driving Ferrari racing cars: Alberto Ascari, Eugenio Castellotti, Alfonso de Portago, Luigi Musso, Peter Collins, Wolfgang von Trips and Lorenzo Bandini. Although such a high death toll was not unusual in motor racing in those days, the Vatican newspaper L’Osservatore Romano described Ferrari as being like the god Saturn, who consumed his own sons. In Ferrari's defense, contemporary F1 race car driver Stirling Moss commented: “I can’t think of a single occasion where a (Ferrari) driver’s life was taken because of mechanical failure.”
In public Ferrari was careful to acknowledge the drivers who risked their life for his team, insisting that praise should be shared equally between car and driver for any race won. However, his longtime friend and company accountant, Carlo Benzi, related that privately Ferrari would say that "the car was the reason for any success."
Following the deaths of Giuseppe Campari in 1933 and Alberto Ascari in 1955, both of whom he had a strong personal relationship with, he chose not to get too close to his drivers, out of fear of emotionally hurting himself. Later in life he relented his position and grew very close to Clay Regazzoni and especially Gilles Villeneuve.
Enzo Ferrari spent a reserved life, and rarely granted interviews. He seldom left Modena and Maranello and never went to any Grands Prix outside of Italy after the 1950s. He was usually seen at the Grands Prix at Monza near Milan and/or Imola, not far from the Ferrari factory, and named after the late Dino. His last known trip abroad was in 1982 when he went to Paris to broker a compromise between the warring FISA and FOCA parties. He never flew in an aeroplane and never set foot in a lift.
He married Laura Dominica Garello (c. 1900–1978) on 28 April 1923, and they remained married until her death. They had one son, Alfredo "Dino", who was born in 1932 and groomed as Enzo's successor, but he suffered from ill-health and died from muscular dystrophy in 1956. Enzo had a second son, Piero, with his mistress Lina Lardi in 1945. As divorce was illegal in Italy until 1975, Piero could only be recognized as Enzo's son after Laura's death in 1978. Piero is currently the vice chairman of the Ferrari company with a 10% share ownership.
Made a Cavaliere del Lavoro in 1952, to add to his honours of Cavaliere and Commendatore in the 1920s, Ferrari also received a number of honorary degrees, the Hammarskjöld Prize in 1962, the Columbus Prize in 1965, and the De Gasperi Award in 1987. In 1994, he was posthumously inducted into the International Motorsports Hall of Fame.
He was inducted into the Automotive Hall of Fame in 2000.
Ferrari died on 14 August 1988 in Maranello at the age of 90. His death was not made public until two days later, as by Enzo's request, to compensate for the late registration of his birth. He witnessed the launch of the Ferrari F40, shortly before his death, which was dedicated as a symbol of his achievements. In 2002 the first car to be named after him was launched as the Enzo Ferrari.
The Italian Grand Prix was held just weeks after Ferrari's death, and the result was a 1–2 finish for Ferrari, with the Austrian Gerhard Berger leading home Italian and Milan native Michele Alboreto; it was the only race that McLaren did not win that season. After Ferrari's death, the Scuderia Ferrari team has had further success, winning the World Drivers' Championship in 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003 and 2004 with Michael Schumacher, 2007 with Kimi Räikkönen, and the Constructors' Championship in 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2007 and 2008.

Rewatched "Hocus Pocus" with the folks...
It was a muggy and cold Friday, we had nothing better to do and the TV's Netflix app was acting up. I could've fixed it, but Mom was impatient. So... Off to the Mouse's demesne we went, and she randomly picked the best Bette Midler vehicle to ever exist. Here's a few random thoughts.
You can really tell the production company only managed to finagle a few weeks around Salem. The daytime scenes sort of track (although a lot of 'em were actually shot in Marblehead, Mass.) but the rest of the movie has that specifically closed-off feeling that really screams "Shot in Burbank, California". It's kind of fittingly hokey; with quaint little New England towns sort of melding into the nineties' idea of a spooky set: dead trees, lots of moss, random headstones, a bajillion fog machines working in tandem.
The movie sort of feels like a horror flick that's had its teeth pulled out, too. I couldn't put my finger on it as a kid, but having grown up and having watched Lawrence Gordon and Bryan Yzna's Necronomicon and Mick Garris' Masters of Horror, I could really dial in the impression I had: this is the work of horror movie buffs dialing their schtick down for the sake of easy Disney cred - and none of that seems to diminish the black-hearted, cackling fun at the heart of the movie. Unsurprisingly, Mick Garris was one of Hocus Pocus' producers. The movie's visual language screams "nineties' horror movie". No wonder I keep pairing viewings of it with Nimoy's The Halloween Tree - that other kids' vehicle gives me the same basic feeling.
I like how anchored it is in the nineties. The shoes the town bullies steal from Max feel amusingly retro, now - and Ernie/ICE (Larry Bagby) feels very coded in 1993's trends. It's just another movie among many that showcase just how bonkers the entire decade was, culturally. For similar vibes on the West Coast, give Hocus Pocus an Encino Man chaser.
My father's a very... credulous movie-watcher. Kathy Najimy affects a sort of goofy facial palsy as Mary Sanderson, and keeps it up as any well-trained character actor would. Dad honestly asked us if Najimy had the same condition as Jean Chrétien, one of Canada's former PMs - made famous for his lisp and crooked mouth. Having watched Sex and the City with Mom a few years back, he needed a few appearances for Sarah Sanderson's actress to really dial in.
Yes, Dad; that's Sarah Jessica Parker acting like a total airhead. Yes, Dad; you're basically watching actresses usually known for snarky deliveries camping it up decades before "camp icons" would become a mainstream concept - and yes, Winifred, Sarah and Mary are a few gags short of the Three Stooges, Except Evil. Yes, I always thought that was intentional.
Apart from the Sisters, the rest of the cast feels... meh. It's like you're watching The Mask, except the plot's designed to toss Bighead out the window and put the focus on Ipkiss. Of all the meh-sters of their craft at work, I'd have to give a big-ol' fist-bump to Omri Katz as Max Dennison, for not really bringing flesh to the basic arc of the big-city-kid-who-hates-it-here-and-who-comes-around-through-shenanigans. It's there, it works, but it sort of lacks soul.
Surprisingly, Thora Birch wasn't completely terrible, except maybe for her character's reaction for Max's dismissal being to bodily toss herself onto a pile of pumpkins and cry. I mean - who does that?! I was a Halloween diehard as a kid who's get sick before running the neighbourhood and who'd faint in his chair while his mother was putting greasepaint on him, as desperately eager as I was! If someone had ruined Halloween for me, I'd keep it in for the candy run and then ruin my facepaint while ugly-crying with my mouth stuffed with too many fun-sized Reese peanut butter cups.
On the plus side, the movie having originally been a Disney Channel production allowed the team to work in a ton of cameos. The Dennisons' costume party features a Program from Tron, in a blink-and-you'll-miss-it moment.
There's something to Bette Midler's Winifred that makes me hope she's prototyped that high-energy, ultra-camp poshness with kids, before actually trying for screen tests. The lead Sanderson Sister feels like Mary Poppins gone horribly, wonderfully wrong - to the point where I'd hope she's been given occasion to play her outside of the movie, at least once or twice.

Ten-goal Robins’ play-off hopes revived
Weekend Previews
THREE days after ASHTON UNITED’s biggest win in years, co-boss Jody Banim has his sights set on the play-offs. He accepts that it’s a long shot but sees no reason why his side shouldn’t give it all they’ve got.
As he put it: “I know it looks unlikely but somebody sneaks in every year. We’ve got to keep on winning and see where it takes us. If we win our game in hand we’re only five points behind Warrington.”
The Robins’ 10-1 victory at Skelmersdale on Tuesday was only three goals short of their all-time record, a 13-1 defeat of Marple in the Lancashire Combination in 1919. Understandably it left Banim delighted.
“We’d been threatening it for weeks. But we’ve been profligate in front of goal. We should have put four or five past Matlock last Saturday because we must have had four or five clear on-on-ones,” said the Hurst Cross co-boss.
“I’m not saying I was expecting a 10-1 win but somebody was due to suffer. Yes Skem are bottom of the table and had a young side but I won’t let that take anything away from us. The lads did a very professional job and never stopped. And don’t forget that in their previous game, Skem only lost 4-0 at Blyth.
“Since Boxing Day we’ve won ten of our 15 games, and of the four we’ve lost I was only disappointed with the displays at Marine and Barwell. If the lads work hard and do everything right I can’t complain.”
Tomorrow (Saturday) in the Evo-stik NPL premier division Ashton travel to Causeway Lane to play Matlock, the team they beat 1-0 last week. Banim is confident of a third consecutive victory but stresses that it won’t be easy. “There’s no surprise element now and they’ll be out for revenge. I never like back-to-back games,” he commented.
The Robins have made no pre-deadline signings. Banim and partner Will Haining are satisfied with the players at their disposal.
“It’s not the biggest squad but I think it’s good enough,” said Banim. “There’s no point signing anyone if they’re not really going to play.”
Matt Chadwick is banned tomorrow after being sent off last Saturday for two yellow cards.
In National League North, STALYBRIDGE CELTIC travel to Altrincham for the second time in a week, but this time it’s for a home game. Bridge take on relegation rivals Worcester City in a veritable six-pointer but the game takes place at Moss Lane due to the parlous state of the Bower Fold pitch.
Groundsman Pete Owens is confident, however, that the game against Telford United will take place at Bower Fold on Tuesday.
Steve Burr’s men have their fate back in their own hands as they now lie 11 points behind both Worcester and Gainsborough Trinity but have four games in hand.
Celtic will unveil new signing Andy Bishop, the seasoned striker signing during the week from Hyde United, but will be without midfielders Kristian Platt and Gary Gee, both with groin injuries.
CURZON ASHTON have a full squad available for their trip to Chorley apart from long-term injury victims Iain Howard and Matt Flynn. Manager John Flanagan has made no late signings.
In the Evo-stik NPL first division north, Tom Bailey and Matt Russell have returned to play-off chasing GLOSSOP NORTH END who are on the east coast at Scarborough Athletic. Four under-21s have been promoted to the first-team squad: Josh Lowe, Mason Davies, Danny Ashton and Hadfield midfielder Liam Turner who is on the books at Macclesfield.
DROYLSDEN face Ossett Town at the Butchers Arms without Domaine Rouse who is suspended. Scott Metcalfe is injured and listed as very doubtful. No signings have been made.
Jason Hill misses MOSSLEY’s game at Clitheroe with a tight hamstring. Co-bosses Lloyd Morrison and Peter Band have brought in striker Elliot Harrison on loan from Halifax Town. Danny McLaughlin comes in from Diggle and Nathan Quinlan has been allowed to join Chadderton on a dual registration.
Macclesfield midfielder Omry Perel has switched his NPL registration from Droylsden to HYDE UNITED but other than that the Tigers have made no signings.
Manager Darren Kelly explained: “The fact is we don’t need anyone. Tomorrow, at Ossett Albion, we have everyone available and that’s a headache but a great one to have. We’re fully fit and raring to go and there’s no room for any excuses.”
NPL deadline transfers
Liam Turner from Macclesfield Town to Glossop North End Perel Omry from Droylsden to Hyde United Elliott Harrison from Halifax Town to Mossley Josh Brizell from Glossop North End to Skelmersdale United Ryan O’Hare from Droylsden to Skelmersdale United Henoc Mukendi from Stalybridge Celtic to Sutton Coldfield Town Kurt Sherlock from Stalybridge Celtic to Warrington Town
