NRAI tells shooters optional camp postponed, SAI says 'principally approved' it | More sports News

NRAI tells shooters optional camp postponed, SAI says 'principally approved' it | More sports News
NEW DELHI: The National Rifle Association of India (NRAI) has postponed the optional national camp, slated to be held from October 5, due to “administrative compulsions”. This is the second time in two months that the national camp has been postponed, the first being in August, when the NRAI was forced to call it off in view of the COVID-19 pandemic.
In an email to the shooters, NRAI secretary Rajiv Bhatia wrote, “Due to administrative compulsions, the coaching camp proposed from 5th October, 2020 in Rifle/Pistol events at the Dr. Karni Singh Shooting Ranges, New Delhi is postponed. “A fresh circular will be issued in due course of time. Inconvenience is regretted.” Speaking to PTI on Thursday, a top top pistol shooter confirmed receiving the circular from the NRAI. However, the Sports Authority of India (SAI) stated in a release that it has “principally approved” the coaching camp for the core group of shooters that was formed keeping in mind the Tokyo Olympics. “… However, considering the prevailing extraordinary circumstances of the COVID-19 pandemic, the details of the camp are being worked out in consultation with all the stakeholders,” the SAI said in the release. “In light of the present quarantine requirements of 7 days, especially when shooter/ support staff would be travelling from various parts of the country, holding a short camp of 10 days for shotgun was not considered prudent,” the nodal sports body added. “In addition, measures for implementing a quarantine process for shooters accommodated at the hotel vis-à-vis the shooters travelling from homes residing in NCR are being worked out.” In the release, the SAI said 64 additional shooters would be provided ammunition and targets on government expense. The Dr Karni Singh Shooting Range was thrown open to the athletes on July 8 and since then, a handful of shooters including Olympic quota holders Sanjeev Rajput and Manu Bhaker, have been training at the facility on their own. “The SAI had already opened up the Dr Karni Singh Shooting Range (KSSR) in New Delhi for the NRAI core group as well as the developmental group and Khelo India shooters. “SAI also understands the requirement of a dedicated camp for shooters preparing for the Olympics and has principally agreed to the coaching camp for the NRAI core group who have been selected as Olympic probable.” Another reason for the postponement of the earlier camp was a woman coach returning positive for the coronavirus at the Karni Singh Shooting Ranges. Two weeks ago, the NRAI received a request from the national coaches in rifle, pistol and shotgun disciplines to organise a one-month national camp to ensure better preparations for the Olympics. Considering the request of the coaches, the NRAI had planned to start an optional camp for 100 shooters from October 5, but going by the national federation’s latest circular, the chances of a full-fledged national camp anytime soon seems bleak.

Olympic Shotgun: India Seeks to Win More Tokyo Olympic Quota
The Indian shooters will make an earnest final attempt to add to the nine Tokyo Olympic quota places that they have won, so far, for the Olympic 2020 Games. While the men and women have been camping in Doha, Qatar, preparing for the Asian Championship, the national junior team left for the competition.
Olympic fans from all over the world are invited to book Olympic 2020 tickets from our online platforms for Olympic Tickets. Olympic Shotgun fans can book Olympic Shotgun Tickets from our ticketing marketplace exclusively on discounted prices.
India’s gathering of nine quota places may not associate well with the 25 that world leader China has won so far, but India has done very well to declare itself in the air pistol and air rifle events in which it has won seven quotas. It will be able to field teams for the mixed air events in the Tokyo Olympic.
The circumstance that India has topped the medals tally in all the four World Cups this season in rifle and pistol, in Delhi, Beijing, Munich and Rio is ample testimony to the prowess of the young guns, and the healthy progress the team has made from the last Olympic in Rio when it drew a blank.
Anjum Moudgil and Apurvi Chandela had secured the women’s air rifle quota last year in the World Championship. Saurabh Chaudhary and Abishek Verma have won the men’s air pistol quota places. In women’s air pistol also, India has caught the maximum probable two quota places through Manu Bhaker and Yashaswini Deswal.
Only Asian Games gold medalist Rahi Sarnobat, who won the allocation in women’s game pistol and the experienced Sanjeev Rajput who secured the men’s rifle 3-position quota, have managed to go beyond the air events, to enhance the collection. India will be keen to win quickfire quota places and the women’s rifle 3-position quota. There is an opportunity of plenty of medals, especially by the juniors, but the focus will be on the number of Tokyo Olympic quota that India wins in Doha, as it will be the last chance.
The shotgun team has not been able to get hold of a single Olympic 2020 Games quota so far, for Tokyo Olympic, even though there are a bunch of high-quality shooters capable of achieving the target. Asia is fairly strong in shotgun, which has many variables and basics playing their part as associated with the identical atmosphere in the indoor ranges. It will be a challenge for the likes of former world champion Manavjit Sandhu, Olympian Kynan Chenai, or for that matter Mairaj Ahmad Khan who missed the skeet final in the last Olympic narrowly, to win the ticket to Summer Games.
The suggestions may be bright, but the health of the Indian shooting will be known only in the Tokyo Olympic. It is important that India has the numbers and quality to try and follow the fine examples of Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore, Abhinav Bindra, Gagan Narang and Vijay Kumar, who won a gold, two silver and a bronze in all, in three successive Olympic in Athens, Beijing and London.
Olympic 2020 supporters can get Olympic Tickets through our trusted online ticketing market place. Sportticketexchange.com is the most consistent source to book Olympic Packages.

Commonwealth Games: Birmingham 2022 shooting & archery events could take place in India
New Post has been published on https://thebiafrastar.com/commonwealth-games-birmingham-2022-shooting-archery-events-could-take-place-in-india/
Commonwealth Games: Birmingham 2022 shooting & archery events could take place in India
Sanjeev Rajput won shooting gold for India at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games in 2018
The 2022 Commonwealth Games could see shooting and archery staged in India several months before the main event starts in Birmingham.
The unprecedented proposal has been put forward by India, who had threatened to boycott Birmingham 2022 after shooting was excluded from the Games.
If approved, the idea would avert that risk.
BBC Sport understands the results of the competitions would count towards the official medal tally.
The change will be considered by the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) over the coming weeks.
It could be accepted by its executive board as soon as next month, and then put to a full vote of the CGF’s 71 member associations.
India has agreed to pay for the cost of hosting the two competitions – thought to be as much as £20m.
Shooting’s Birmingham u-turn
Shooting has been included in every Games apart from one since 1966.
But last year Birmingham 2022 announced that the sport – along with archery – had been left out of the programme, as they are both optional sports for host cities.
Beach volleyball, para table tennis and women’s cricket were included instead as organisers focused on trying to attract younger and more diverse audience. Shooting was deemed to be of no benefit to the West Midlands as it would have been staged in Bisley, Surrey.
India has a proud record in shooting. At the 2018 Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast, the country’s shooters accounted for 16 of their 66 medals, contributing to a third-placed finish in the medal table. They threatened to boycott the event if a compromise could not be found.
That caused alarm within the UK government, which hopes the £788m event will be an advert for global, post-Brexit Britain and help secure trade deals. Birmingham 2022 will be the biggest and most expensive sports event to be staged in the UK since the London 2012 Games.
In August, sports minister Nigel Adams wrote to CGF officials suggesting a compromise in which shooting would be staged at Bisley in the UK in 2022, but not be part of the official Games programme.
A groundbreaking move
In November CGF officials held crisis talks with Indian sports authorities in New Delhi and expressed optimism that a solution could be found.
Last month it announced India had dropped the threat of a boycott.
But BBC Sport has learned that India’s Olympic Association has now written to the CGF with a groundbreaking proposal for a pre-Games shooting and archery competition.
The idea, backed by India’s government and the two sports’ international federations, is for the events to take place in either New Delhi or Chandigarh four months before the action gets under way in Birmingham.
Medals would count in the event’s official table.
Some will welcome the suggestion as a highly innovative solution that enables shooters and archers to take part in the Games and successfully avoids a highly embarrassing and damaging boycott by the Commonwealth’s largest country.
Others, however, may fear an exception will be made simply because of India’s political clout, and that it could undermine British teams’ prospects at Birmingham 2022 if they start the event already trailing India in the medal table after the proposed shooting and archery competitions.
In a statement, CGF chief executive David Grevemberg described it as an “innovative proposal with the ambition of strengthening Commonwealth sport” and said it would be “reviewed by the CGF and discussed with Birmingham 2022 delivery partners”.
He added: “Key aspects of this assessment will be to ensure that the proposal conforms with our rules and regulations, is operationally deliverable, sets manageable precedents for the Commonwealth Games and ultimately adds value to athletes and the Commonwealth Sports Movement.”

#739 Abhishek Verma, Saurabh Chaudhary and Sanjeev Rajput make India proud in ISSF World cup; Bumrah’s magic and Rahane’s century helps India thrash WI in first test; 2nd test is on even terms as Holder shines for WI and Kohli for India; Djokovic-Federer-Nadal still the men to beat in US open; Halep, Kerber, Muguruza, Tsitsipas and Thiem shocked and more...:-)
Rahane made first test against WI his own by scoring a century in 2nd innings. Vihari century by 7 runs. He has been impressive with his temperament in this series. WI had to play patiently to force a draw but what transpired has always worried WI cricket fans. Bumrah’s lethal spell of 5-7 ensured WI were reduced to 50-9. He bowled with pace, swing and great skill. He bowled a couple of left handhers with ball pitching on middle and off stump line and straightening to uproot the stumps. Dream deliveries. WI eventually were dismissed for 100. India won 362 runs. It is their biggest win in overseas tests in terms of runs. In 2nd test, WI won the toss and elected to field again. Rahul and Mayank played ease early against Gabriel and Roach. Holder got one to swing which dismissed Rahul. India 32-1. Pujara fell to Cornwall for just 6. It has been poor WI outing for Pujara. Mayank and Virat Kohli took India to lunch at 72-2. Post lunch, both played with intent as India’s total went past 100. Just like quite a few Indians in this series, Mayank didn’t make good use of start as Holder dismissed him for 55. India 115-3. Rahane just made 24 as Roach dismissed him. India 164-4. India were in a bit of trouble here. India needed one of those big daddy hundreds from Virat Kohli. Just after taking India past 200, Holder dismissed Indian captain for 76. Off late, Virat had made quite a few fifties without converting. It’s a bit unusual but most players go through this phase. India 202-5. Vihari and Pant played well as India’s next gen players took score to 264-5 by end of play. Its an even day where both teams didn’t take full control of the match.
US open kick started in usual fashion. Next gen players like Tsitsipas and Thiem both lost in opening rounds. Zverev struggled but won first 2 rounds in 5 sets . Nadal reached 3rd round without being tested. He won first round in straight sets and was given walkover by Kokinikas in 2nd round. Federer was tested in first 2 round. Sumit Nagal shockingly took opening set against Federer. He had chances to hold early in 2nd set but 2 back to back double faults pulled him back. Federer didn’t look back as he won in 4 sets. He won 2nd round too in 4 sets against Dzumhur after being a set down. Djokovic looked in good form but had a bad left shoulder pain in 2nd round match. Would be interesting to see if he can recover fast from that. He could potentially face Wawrinka in 4th round should he beat Kudla. Medvedev also should good sign of form early on. He could potentially meet Djokovic in QF. Goffin beat Carreno Busta to setup 4th round clash with Federer who outclassed Evans in flat 1000 minutes. Federer didn’t lose a point on serve in 2nd set which is a sensational achievement. De Minaur shocked Nishikori in 4 sets to setup 4th round clash with Dimitrov. Winner of this could face Federer in QF. Kyrgios, Cilic , Isner and Monfils are few dangerous players who are still in the draw. In ladies draw, Kerber , Halep and Muguruza lost in first 2 round itself. Serena seems to be favorite to win her 24th slam. Osaka , Keys, Barty and Pliskova could be potential challengers. Serena has setup 4th round clash with Martic. She could potentially face Barty in QF and Pliskova in SF.
In shooting where Olympic quota is at stake, Abhishek Verma won gold in 10m pistol in ISSF World cup. In the medal round, Verma was the only shooter to shoot four scores in excess of 10 in the first series before a last shot of 9.4.Saurabh Chaudhary wins bronze in the same event. Proud moment for India. This win is equivalent to Sindhu winning world championship. Sanjeev Rajput wins silver in 50m 3 rifle position. He too qualifies for 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Shooting can produce some great results for India in 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Fingers crossed.

ISSF WC: Saurabh wins 10m air pistol gold, secures Oly quota
NEW DELHI: A 16-year-old shooter from India once again made each of his seven other challengers feel old on Sunday by winning a World Cup gold in his first senior ISSF final; the world record in a men’s 10m air pistol final and the Olympic quota place that came along for Saurabh Chaudhary was the icing on the cake.
The final at the Dr. Karni Singh Shooting Range was like watching a ‘catch me if you can’ sequence unfolding in front of a packed audience in the Finals hall. Right from the first series of five shots to the end, Chaudhary — a Commonwealth Games, Asian Games and Youth Olympic Games gold medallist — firmed up his position at the top to finish a world record score of 245.0.
His dominance showed up in the point difference of 5.7 from the silver medallist, Damir Mikec. The Serbian finished with 239.3 to bag the second Olympic quota place available in the event.
The bronze medal went to Wei Pang of China, who scored 215.2 points.
The lead of 2.6 points after the first two series of five shots each would generally be considered enough to clinch the top place on the podium in any world competition, but it seems Chaudhary wasn’t satisfied with that.
“I knew I had a big lead but didn’t bother about it. Just kept doing what I was doing,” said Chaudhary, who now holds both junior and senior world record in men’s 10m air pistol finals.
A lot of cheer emanated from behind the eight shooters, with a boisterous crowd bobbing in the stands.
“I have shot with such crowd everywhere, but never bothered about it. It was the same at the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta,” he added.
About the Olympic quota and world record, Chaudhary said it happened because he was focused on winning gold.
“I never thought of the quota, just wanted to do my best. And never thought I will make a world record,” the Meerut boy reckoned.
Chaudhary made it to the final earlier on Sunday by finishing on top of his qualification round with a score of 587. The other two Indians in the fray — Abhishek Verma and Ravinder Singh — failed to make it to the medal round.
However, there was a setback in store for India as the Commonwealth Games and Youth Olympics gold medallist Manu Bhaker finished a disappointing fifth in the women’s 25m Pistol event.
Bhaker could only muster a score of 22 in the eight-woman final after qualifying with an impressive 590 — 296 in Precision Stage and 294 in Rapid Fire Stage.
Asian Games gold medallist Rahi Sarnobat failed to reach the medal match after racking up 580 points — 287 in Precision and 293 in Rapid Fire.
A lot of hopes were also attached with Sanjeev Rajput and Parul Kumar in the men’s 50m Rifle 3 Positions, but the duo failed to go past the qualification phase on Sunday. While Parul finished 22nd with 1170 points, Rajput was 25th in the standings with 1169 points.

Olympics shooting selections: Saurabh chalks up his best in air pistol
Saurabh Chaudhary asserted his class as he topped the 10m air pistol event with a score of 588 in the Olympic shooting selection trials at the Dr. Karni Singh Range here on Wednesday.
This was the best score for the 17-year-old, who had won the Asian Games gold in 2018 and had followed that up with two individual gold medals and four mixed team gold medals with Manu Bhaker in the World Cups last year.
Abhishek Verma, who was equally impressive winning two gold medals in World Cups last year, was second with 585.
Good numbers
In the scores that are counted for the Olympic selection prior to the current trials, Saurabh has had an impressive string of 585, 581, 587, 580, 586, 584 and 583.
The National Rifle Association of India (NRAI) has decided that it would consider the scores in the Asian Games, World Championship, World Cups and the Asian championship while finalising the team for the Tokyo Olympics.
Also read: Events affected by coronavirus in India
Since the World Cup in Delhi has been postponed this season, the national federation opted to have a trial to fill the scores.
With only a handful of shooters in each event, it was decided not to have the finals in any of the events.
Annu takes top spot
In women’s air pistol, Olympian Annu Raj Singh topped with 579, one point ahead of Esha Singh, while Olympic quota winners Manu and Yashaswini Deswal had scores of 574 and 570 respectively.
In the 50-metre rifle 3-position event, the top four slots in the combined scores of men and women were occupied by Olympic quota winners, Aishwary Pratap Singh Tomar (1178), Anjum Moudgil, Tejaswini Sawant and Sanjeev Rajput, in that order.
Anjum, who had won the air rifle Olympic quota with a silver in the World Championship, is eligible to shoot the rifle 3-position event as well in Olympics.
The results: Men: 10m air pistol: 1. Saurabh Chaudhary 588, 2. Abhishek Verma 585, 3. Dharmendra Singh 579, 4. Om Prakash Mitharval 577, 5. Gaurav Rana 576.
50m rifle 3-position: 1. Aishwary Pratap Singh Tomar 1178, 2. Sanjeev Rajput 1169, 3. Chain Singh 1169, 4. Swapnil Kusale 1169.
Women: 10m air pistol: 1. Annu Raj Singh 579, 2. Esha Singh 578, 3. Manu Bhaker 574, 4. Yashaswini Deswal 570.
50m rifle 3-position: 1. Anjum Moudgil 1174, 2. Tejaswini Sawant 1170, 3. Ayushi Podder 1168, 4. Sunidhi Chauhan 1163, 5. Gaayathri Nithyanandam 1158.
