Tuesday News & Notes from Around the World:
So often, equestrian media is dominated by names from ‘big six’ nations. But beyond those global superpowers, there are so many riders breaking down barriers and playing a colossal part in building an equestrian industry in countries for whom competing on the world stage is a brand new novelty. One of those? Lithuania’s Aistis Vitkauskus, who we’ve been following at EN for a few years now. Get to know him, his cool, quirky Commander VG, his philosophies, and his love for fly-fishing in this profile from the FEI.
This year’s MARS Badminton Horse Trials is a special one. Okay, let’s be real, it’s Badminton – they’re all special! But this year, the world’s first five-star celebrates a big birthday, and we’re looking forward to all the celebrations of the history and future of this magical competition. Want to start feeling those butterflies nice and early? You’re in luck: on April 9, there’ll be a preview evening in Gloucestershire, packed with some of the biggest names in eventing and guaranteed to be heaving with fascinating stories and interesting insights. Get your tickets here and I’ll see you at the bar.
Costs continue to rise for eventers, and so it’s always exciting when a chance to save money pops up. That’s what’s been offered by British eventing organisers BEDE Events, who have launched a ‘loyalty scheme’ for repeat competitors: compete in five BEDE events through the season, and at the sixth, you’ll have your start fee waived. More money for cheesy chips! Sign me up, tbh.
The season is officially underway, but there’s so, so much left to come. Catch up with US Eventing in the latest episode of the USEA Podcast, where host Nicole Brown is joined by EquiRatings’ Diarm Byrne, USEA CEO Rob Burk, and President Lou Leslie to find out how they reckon it might unfold – from team predictions to exciting moments yet to come, and plenty more besides. Tune in here and get excited!

As if eventing at the top level and vying for a place on the French Olympic team wasn’t enough, young British-based upstart Gaspard Maksud — who you may remember from his sparkling sixth place finish at the 2022 World Championships — has spent his winter learning the ropes around seriously beefy showjumping tracks. Vibrant Closing Ceremony Marks the End of Memorable Hangzhou Asian Games 2023
India’s Remarkable Performance at Asian Games in Hangzhou
The 2023 Asian Games in Hangzhou came to an end with a memorable closing ceremony that praised the participants’ outstanding accomplishments and highlighted Chinese culture.
Indian competitors made a standout performance in the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou, China, that was marked by quality and tenacity. India, who had a delegation of 655 athletes, accomplished an incredible accomplishment by breaking their previous record of 70 medals established in Jakarta in 2018 and winning a total of 107 medals.
28 gold, 38 silver, and 41 bronze medals made up India’s impressive medal haul, which was an increase above the 70 medals earned by a squad of 570 athletes four years earlier. Only four countries managed to surpass the 100-medal threshold in Hangzhou, making India’s contribution to the total medal count all the more noteworthy.
The Indian shooters stood out among the competitors, winning 22 medals in all, including seven golds. Neeraj Chopra successfully defended his javelin throw championship, giving athletics its opportunity to shine. Track and field competitions gave India a total of six gold, fourteen silver and nine bronze medals.
India’s success in archery was further enhanced when the compound team won all five gold medals available in their division. The gold rush was maintained by the cricket and kabaddi teams, who each took home two gold medals. Along with winning gold, the men’s hockey team also qualified for the Paris 2024 Olympics.
India Secures Olympic Quotas and Historic Gold Wins
Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy’s triumph in badminton signified India’s first men’s doubles gold medal at the Games. Squash, tennis, and equestrian victories added to India’s total gold medal count. The cricket teams for men and women both won gold.
The significance of Hangzhou, though, went beyond the number of medals. The competition offered 74 slots in several sports as a lead-up to the Paris 2024 Olympics. Six of these quotas were won by India, with boxing taking the top spot.
The tickets to Paris were acquired by athletes including Nikhat Zareen, Preeti Pawar, Parveen Hooda, and Lovlina Borgohain. India had a significant presence in the French city thanks to men’s hockey and athletics, assuring that the country would be well-represented at the next Olympic Games.
A Vibrant Closing Ceremony
The 80,000-person-seat ‘Big Lotus’ Stadium served as the venue for the event, which attracted viewers with a 75-minute show of lights, music, and lasers. The conclusion of more than two weeks of gruelling sports action was marked by the athletes from the 45 participating nations bidding farewell.
The goal of the closing ceremony’s “Culture and Sports” merger of sports and culture was to achieve harmony. In front of Chinese Premier Li Qiang and other officials, acting head of the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA), Randhir Singh, formally proclaimed the 19th Asian Games to be over.

In accordance with the principles of the Olympic Council of Asia, Singh declared the 19th Hangzhou Asian Games ended and invited the youth of Asia to come together to celebrate the 20th Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, in three years.

The Olympics ended a while a go but I finally wrote this out!
Olympics!Leverage
Parker is a world famous artistic gymnast, an absolute monster on the balance beams and the definition dexterity on the floor. Became a meme because of her terrible track record in interviews, it's not that she's actively trying to be rude or awkward, she just doesn't know how to hold back the adrenaline from performing the perfect floor routine.
Alec Hardison is a nerd through and through and has no shame in revealing in an interview that he only picked up the bow and arrow when he was 12 was because he thought (and still thinks) that Legolas is the coolest character ever. Nana enrolled him in a local archery class to help him with his ADHD, turns out internally roleplaying as Bard the Bowman was great therapy. He likes the recurve bow but his true love is the compound.
Sophie Devereaux is a dressage legend. Her first olympics was as a eventer but she decided her that true passion lies in dressage. She competed in 10 olympics total (7 of them in dressage, won gold in 5, silver in 2 and bronze in 1). Has ridden many horses in many games but her heart will always belong to Griff (short for Maximundo Grift Valegro LAM 15B9) a true white Lusitano Arab mix stallion, they won gold in 2 Olympics together (eventing and dressage). Sophie retired after the tragic death of her husband (and olympic gold medallist sailor) Nate Ford, decided to follow a career as an equestrian games commentator, trainer and social media sensation. Was invited by the BBC to be the main tv host of the Olympics coverage alongside the experts of their respective sports.
Eliot Spencer is a veteran that found himself in cooking and Taekwondo. He still feels like a newcomer, its hard not to when your peers became third-degree black belts at 15 and you discovered the sport at 23 and fresh off war. But goddamn Eliot tries his hardest. Now he is 31, it’s his second Olympics and he’s not going to settle for silver this time, his first and only goal is Gold (the second goal is having fun).
Breanna Casey is a skateboarding prodigy. She’s 16 and thrilled that skateboarding is finally being recognized as a legitimate sport and can finally rub on those mean boomer’s faces the she is an olympic athlete now (take that, you raisins!). She’s super nervous but she’s been on the international competition scene since she was 11, she got this... right? She’s a social media Menace with a capital M, 2 million followers on twitter and brand deals helped her so much with her sport expenses, Nana can only help so much with plane tickets and skateboard equipment. A shitpost master and posting in the middle of competitions is her Brand™ and the public loves it.
Harry Wilson feels like a deer in the headlights of a 12 wheeler truck and the only way out is to narrate what’s happening and he LOVES IT. He won a ticket to the golf preliminaries, got lost on the way back from the bathroom, met a lady he swears he saw on TV once and somehow he’s on national uk television commentating alongside an olympic legend and other experts now. He’s having the time of his life and if someone noticed the odd one out here they haven’t snitched yet.
The majority of the crew doesn’t have a criminal background (I’m looking at you Parker) but when they notice that judges are being very unfair and showing favoritism they couldn’t sit still. They bump into each other while snooping around.
Plot twist: turns out the judges are being paid off by a multibillion dollar company to tip the competition towards athletes sponsored by this corporation and that would bring them the most profit.
The payments are made in hard cash envelopes and hand delivered to avoid any paper trail.
The grand heist is to intercept the 8 suit cases full of cash being delivered in the next 7 days, expose the judges and donate the bribe money to the wronged athletes.
Everyone is trying to be very professional and careful. Harry’s still having a great time.
#leverage#my post#leverage redemption#lev red#leverage au#leverage Olympics#quinn is in taekwondo#tara is in showjumping#chaos is a air pistol shooter#i gave up on putting eliot on the pentathlon bc the horsemanship in that was horrendous and i refuse to allow him to be associated with it#leverage parker#alec hardison#sophie devereaux#eliot spencer#breanna casey#harry wilson#i pulled the reverse jung on sophie#instead of dressage to event its event to dressage#shes known as the star destroyer in equestrian circles bc you cant look away from her but be ready to compete for second place#the concept of 5 top athletes and their over enthusiastic friend plan a heist is so funny#if anyone has wants to write it please do i have no plans for this

Are Atlanta fashion shows always to benefit its brand or others in a positive way?
ATLANTA- Events are always happening in Atlanta from sports events, concerts, even fashion shows. Most people tune in to fashion shows to know what is in, and what is out. Atlanta being a city based capital, is shy of horses and never the less the equestrian style. The popular brand Polo is once again, for the fourth year, bringing its popular Atlanta Fashion & Polo Classic fashion show back. This event is being held at Bouckaert Farm in Fairburn, Ga which is south of the city of Atlanta. To differ the event each year the presenter of the event, the Michael Wilson Collection which is also sponsored by Bentley Atlanta, likes to change up the themes to make it more special. As Polo as you see in their brand, has a more of an polo match vibe, the creators goal is to make it a professional "Black Tie Expierence". This cocktail event, held at The Georgian Terrence Hotel, set the perfect scene for the equestrian clothing style, Polo offers.
Atlanta style is very diverse, as you see all types from skirts and boots to short sleeve crop tops paired with sweatpants and a jacket. The two main draws to tie the event to its clothing style, were the charity polo match and the designer fashion show. I believe this was a perfect way to put out their brand and how it will express itself to the customers admiring the clothing. Polo did a great job amping up the guest with food, alchol, cigars and live music from DJ Mark Battle and DJ Frank Ski, to tune them into a great experience. The founder of the show stated " This was an amazing weekend, and so far our best Atlanta Fashion & Polo Classic yet". Atlanta is such a great place to host such shows because of how open-minded people who live in and outside of Atlanta is to style and how it changes.
A VIP experience is what anyone would want while choosing a ticket to a show, well the Atlanta Fashion & Polo Classic had the ideal package for guest who chose the option. This option included such a luxurious ride in a Bentley, which was provided by one of the sponsors Bentley Atlanta, after you step off a helicopter ride to the venue. Any major car companies are hard to get sponsored by, but with the past Wilson has with Sid Barron who is the General Manager for Bentley Atlanta, they help each other benefit each others companies. The trade of their businesses has benefited both men, as Wilson contributed Polo blazers to Barrons clients, and in return Barron contributed cars in aid to Wilsons events.
This event is bringing such a light to the Polo Brand, as all its proceeds went to the Ride to the Olympics Foundation, which is a non-profit organization started by Wilson. The Ride to the Olympic Foundation which helps underprivileged youth gain accesses to equestrian sports ; horse riding lessons, horse farm visits, summer camps, and trips to show jumping polo events. As much publicity as this event gets for the brand, it will go to a great cause that will benifit everyone in the long run and help the less fortunate.

Olympic Equestrian: FEI confirms cancellation of 2020 Jumping Nations Cup Final
The International Equestrian Federation (FEI) has announced that this year's Jumping Nations Cup Final in Barcelona has been canceled. The competition was due to take place at the Real Club de Polo de Barcelona (RCPB) between October 2 and 4 but the event is the latest to fall victim to the coronavirus pandemic.
Olympic fans from all over the world are invited to book Olympic 2020 tickets from our online platform for Olympic Tickets. Olympic Eventing fans can book Olympic Equestrian Tickets from our ticketing marketplace exclusively on discounted prices.
Local organizers the Real Federation Hospice Española decided to cancel, alongside the FEI. Rule changes had already been announced for the event in April when the COVID-19 outbreak forced the cancellation of qualification series competitions.
This would have seen 22 countries from around the world invited to compete instead of having to qualify. The decision to cancel comes after a spike in COVID-19 infections in Spain. Last month, the Catalan Government in Barcelona again asked the public to stay home if possible as cases rose.
"We have looked at every scenario, including potentially running the Longines FEI Jumping Nations Cup Final behind closed doors without spectators, but the combination of the situation in Catalonia and the ongoing international travel restrictions has meant that we have unfortunately been forced to jointly agree that regrettably, this year's Final cannot go ahead in Barcelona, the risks are simply too great," said FEI President Ingmar De Voss.
When we announced changes to the rules for the Final back in April, we were cautiously optimistic that even if the series fell victim to the pandemic, we would be able to save the Final in Barcelona, but sadly that has proved impossible. Of course, this is devastating news for everyone involved, not least the athletes that were hoping to compete at the Final, to our hosts in Barcelona and of course to our top partner Longines, but health and safety have to be our top priorities.
While we are all very disappointed now, we very much look forward to returning to Barcelona for the Final in 2021. It has also been confirmed that there will be no promotion and relegation between the Nations Cups leagues this year.
This means the same 10 countries will contest the top-tier Division One in the 2021 season Belgium, France, Germany, Great Britain, Ireland, Italy, The Netherlands, Norway, Switzerland, and Sweden. Barcelona has been a regular host of the Final, with Ireland winning last year to book their place at the Tokyo Olympics.
"This difficult decision is very disappointing for our club and our members and everyone involved," RCPB Foundation President Emilio Zegrí said.
The Longines FEI Jumping Nations Cup Final is an annual highlight for us, the city of Barcelona and all the national and international spectators who fill the stands year after year, but we needed to take this decision now, knowing that a last-minute cancellation would have meant significant costs for the National Federations have made travel plans for their athletes and horses. However, we want to transmit a positive message of hope. We will redouble our efforts so that the 2021 Final can be celebrated as an outstanding edition.

Football is coming home? Greenwich Park will welcome the Euro 2020 fan zone
Greenwich Park could host a "family-friendly" supporter zone Euro 2020 next year as part of London's joint organization of the European International Football Tournament. Sports enthusiasts from around the world can purchase Euro Cup Tickets online to enjoy its stunning performances.
Part of the park could be closed in June and July as part of the plans, the first major event to be held since the 2012 Olympics.
To mark the 60th anniversary of the championships, the tournament will be held for the first time in Europe. Wembley Stadium will host the semi-finals and final, as well as group matches.
Fan zones have been part of major football tournaments since the great success of the World Cup in Germany in 2006. However, although these fan zones are freely accessible, it seems that fans would need tickets for at least some games in the Greenwich Park fan zone.
The road through the park will be closed and roads will probably be closed around downtown Greenwich on the busiest days, according to the Greater London Authority, which plans the fan zone.
Much of the park was closed during the summer of 2012 for the equestrian and modern Olympic and Paralympic Pentathlon events, a test event that took place the year before.
Neighbors living near the park led a highly publicized campaign against the arrival of the Games, including the construction of a stadium on the field next to the National Marine Museum, where the fan zone will be held.
While fears of permanent damage to the park proved unfounded, downtown Greenwich traders reported a drop in activity, with non-Olympic visitors staying away and spectators away from the shopping streets.
Consultation sessions on the plan will be held at the Forum, Trafalgar Road, SE10 9EQ from 2 to 9 pm on Tuesday, July 23 and from 11 am to 4 pm on Wednesday, July 31.
A spokesman for the Mayor of London said: "Londoners, football fans and visitors to the capital expect an incredible experience at Euro 2020 - and the mayor will do everything in his power so that this competition remains engraved in the memories.
"In order for fans to come together to enjoy this unique sporting event in a family environment, the mayor and agencies are currently working with the local community to see if it would be viable to create a fan zone in Greenwich Park.
"A number of consultation events will be held with local residents to discuss proposals for organizing a fan zone in Greenwich. If these proposals move forward, local residents will have priority access and measures will be put in place to minimize disruption. " A planning request could be submitted later this summer.
Football fans can get Euro Cup 2020 Tickets through our trusted online ticketing market place. EuroTickets2020.com is the most reliable source to book Euro 2020 tickets.

New Post has been published on https://toldnews.com/sports/jerome-guery-wins-in-mexico-city/
Jerome Guery wins in Mexico City
Although some riders can take years to gel with a horse, Guery and Quel Homme de Hus, a 13-year-old bay Holsteiner, started their cooperation with a bang, winning a 12-horse jump-off against the clock with a fast-paced, wild ride at Campo Marte, a huge grass surface venue in Mexico City which hosted the equestrian events at the 1968 Olympic Games.
“For me, it’s incredible,” Guery said after finishing 0.96 second ahead of Abdel Said of Egypt and 1.17 seconds clear of Harrie Smolders of the Netherlands.
“This horse, I have just been riding him for two months, he comes from my best friend. A lot of emotion for me, it is a nice victory.”
Guery’s triumph was met with huge cheers from the energetic crowd at a packed Campo Marte and handed the 38-year-old Belgian a ticket to the lucrative Super Grand Prix at the Global Champions Playoffs in Prague in November.
“It’s a special victory here, with the public and the atmosphere,” said Guery, whose win was rewarded with prize money of €102,630 ($116,172). “It’s really special.”
Jump off
Since its foundation in 2006 by former Dutch Olympic champion Jan Tops, the Longines Global Champions Tour and Global Champions League has grown into the world’s richest showjumping circuit. This year, the Tour has expanded to 20 legs, including new stops in New York, Stockholm and Montreal.
After competing in a sandy arena in Doha last month, horses and riders had to adjust to completely different conditions in Mexico City, which has an elevation of 2,250 meters (7,381 feet) above sea level.
Although eight of 12 riders finished the jump-off with clear rounds, Guery was one of the few competitors who went for broke, beating Said and Venise de Reverdy with a tight turn into the final fence.
“I knew my horse has a big canter, and I wanted to use it on the big arena like this,” Guery said about his elegant stallion. “I think I won on the two last ones, because I really pushed and the horse listened to me perfectly. There is not many horses like this. This really is a superstar.”
Guery’s victory moved him up to joint seventh spot in the overall LGCT rankings, alongside France’s Julien Epaillard, with 40 points. Fellow Belgian Niels Bruynseels is the overall leader with 55 points, followed by Germany’s Daniel Deusser on 52 points. Another Belgian, Pieter de Vos, is tied for third in the overall standings on 48 points with Britain’s Ben Maher.
“I’m very happy,” said Bruynseels, who finished in 11th place in Mexico City. “To be the leader of the ranking of competitions with the best riders, best horses and best shows in the world is something very special.”
Maher, Brash out early
There was disappointment in the Mexican capital for Maher, the defending overall LGCT champion, who failed to reach the jump-off after his horse, Madame X, produced 12 penalties.
Maher, who dominated the tour last year with his wonder horse Explosion W had started the 2019 season with a runner-up place last month in Doha to Epaillard.
Scott Brash, last year’s Mexico City winner, riding Hello Senator also had three rails down, leaving no British riders in the jump-off.

Global Champions League
Earlier in the day, Shanghai Swans continued their perfect start to the 2019 season with a second straight win in the Global Champions League team competition.
With seven teams separated by just eight seconds after the first round, over a course designed by Javier Trenor, there was everything to play for in the second round.
Valkenswaard United had been in pole position after the first outing on Friday as Bertram Allen, with Molly Malone V, and Alberto Zorzi, aboard Contanga, finished the course close to two seconds faster than their nearest rivals, Paris Panthers and Shanghai Swans.
But United were eliminated in a dramatic second round on Saturday after Zorzi was forced to retire when Contanga pulled up injured.
That allowed the Swans to follow up their win in Doha last month with victory in Mexico City as Sweden’s Peder Fredricson, Ireland’s Shane Sweetnam and Deusser produced a total of four penalties, one clear of the Hamburg Giants and four ahead of the Monaco Aces.
“My horse jumped great today,” said Fredricson, the star performer of the Shanghai Swans with two clear rounds on two different horses. “For a speed class, it was quite a big track. Of course, the pressure of the team and everything, everything adds up. That’s what makes it so good.”
Miami Beach
The Tour heads to Miami Beach for its third leg next week with the Swans looking to extend their lead in the overall classification over their nearest rivals, the New York Empire.
“It’s a good start, we to try hold on the whole season,” said Fredricson, the reigning European champion.
His teammate Deuser added: “This was really a team win.”
“We have a strong team and the expectations are high, but in the end we really had to do it over two rounds. We are going with a lot of confidence in the next leg.”

Olympic Eventing: Triple Olympic gold medalist Hoy takes lead after the cross-country phase of Tokyo Olympic
Olympic triple team gold medalist Andrew Hoy of Australia made his way to first place with Bloom of the Hauts Crets after the cross-country phase of the full test for Tokyo Olympic.
Olympic fans from all over the world are invited to book Olympic 2020 tickets from our online platform for Olympic Tickets. Olympic Eventing fans can book Olympic Eventing Tickets from our ticketing marketplace exclusively on discounted prices.
Sixth on the course of 20 fences from Derek Di Grazia to Sea Forest overlooking the heart of Tokyo Bay, the seven-time Olympian and the eight-year-old Selle Français mare crossed the finish line with seven seconds to lose to take the start driving on a score of 27.7 penalties. The International Equestrian Federation (FEI) claims that the increasing heat and humidity provide a perfect environment for testing on-site cooling facilities for equine and human competitors.
"It’s a very nice position to be in and if I win I’m very happy for this year, but it’s next year I want to win," Hoy said.
My horse was galloping very well and his heart rate and temperature were very good when I arrived. The scary accommodations here on the site were excellent. As an Olympic venue, it is ready a year ago because the terrain is excellent and the construction of the cross country fences is very good, but next year will be very different.
As the Australian jumpsuit was second after the dressage phase, only overnight leaders Yoshiaki Oiwa and Bart L JRA could challenge them. But the Japanese driver was 14 seconds from the clock to collect 5.6 time faults and move to fourth place with 30.1 penalties.
German superstar Michael Jung, another three-time Olympic gold medalist and heading to Tokyo 2020 as defending champion, straddled the seven-year-old Fischerwild. They also finished clear over the fences and the clock to move into second place with 28.0 penalties.
"It was hot but it wasn’t a big problem," Jung said.
The grooms and everyone really took great care of the horses, and everyone tried to make the job for horses and riders as easy as possible. Another pair for the host country, Japan, Ryuzo Kitajima and Vick Du Gisors, almost hit the optimal time of 5min 30sec to go from fourth after dressage to third, ahead of Oiwa and Bart L JRA, with 28.2 penalties.
The compatriot Kazuma Tomato is slightly behind in fifth place on Tacoma d'Horset with 30.4 penalties. Britons Georgie Spence and Halltown Harley complete the top six with 30.6 penalties and there is less than a barrier between them and the leaders. Seven of the 16 runners remain on their dressage marks, while eight others have just had time lapses.
The only combination to pick up jump penalties was long distance scouts Kazuya Otomo and Condorcet, who had a run-out to the second element of the inclined rails doubled at fence 10 to fall from one place in the 16th. Tomorrow, the action returns to the new facilities at Baji Koen, site of the equestrian events of the 1964 Tokyo Olympic Games, for the final jump phase.
"Altogether the horses healthier well after the cross country, despite the challenging conditions, and they are all now back home in their air-conditioned stalls at Baji Koen resting ready for tomorrow’s jumping," Goran Akerström, the FEI's veterinary director, said.

Olympic Dressage: With horse-riding in his genes, fouaad mirza gears up for Olympics debut
The new year brought great news for Fouad Mirza. The Bengaluru boy was assured of his place in the Olympics in November but it got the official stamp when the International Federation for Equestrian Sports (EFI) released their rankings after the 2019 season.
Olympic admirers from all over the world are entreated to book Olympic 2020 tickets from our online platforms for Olympic Tickets. Olympics Dressage followers can book Olympic Dressage Tickets from our ticketing marketplace exclusively on discounted prices.
The confirmation was the icing on the cake for the fast-rising star, who just two years ago had broken India’s 36-year equestrian medal drought at the Asian Games, bagging silver in both the individual and team events. The Indian government even conferred him with the Arjuna Award in 2019 for that achievement but as it turns out, not everything was smooth sailing through the year.
The horse with whom I won the silvers, Seigneur Medicott was injured early on in 2019, which was a big blow to me. I was counting on him to help me through the qualifications but unfortunately, he could not participate, Fouaad Mirza revealed in an exclusive chat with the Olympic 2020 Channel.
However, his determination did not waver. Riding the newly-acquired Dajara 4, Fouaad Mirza rode to victory at CCI3*S, an Olympic 2020 qualifying tournament at Strzegom, Poland in October, which he lists as one of the highlights of his season.
The royal lineage
Horses have continuously been a part of Fouaad Mirza’s life, seeing his father, Dr. Hasneyn Mirza is an equestrian veterinarian. He fits to a family whose families comprise a royal from the state of Mysore.
“I ongoing riding at the age of five, and it was always somewhat I would do after school and obviously, the passion to be around horses slowly started taking shape,” supposed Fouaad Mirza
A retired army officer, Colonel Rajesh Pattu, who is also somebody I look up to, gave me a few old cassettes of Sir Mark Todd’s international career and those got me hooked. I have watched them so many times that I can tell you exactly minute-to-minute what happened, Fouaad Mirza revealed with a tinge of that childish joy in his voice. While he was in school, he realized he had a competitive streak and as he grew older he harnessed it into a sport that was ideal for him.
“It was wonderful to combine my competitiveness with an animal I loved to be around and so I started riding at the national level and it was there that my journey actually began,” he supposed.
The ultimate dream
The equestrian is currently training in Germany and is looking to get his into his groove before his big dream rolls around in about six months. Look, there is always the risk of injury in any sport, and I cannot hold me back because of that fear. I will keep training hard and take part in more events to be in the best possible shape before Tokyo Olympic, he stated.
Nonetheless, I have not ever been one to bow down under the weight of a big challenge, my modest nature does not allow that. Others may think I have no chance nevertheless I always think I do - if you don’t do that for yourself, nobody else can.
And how does he rate his chances at the Olympic 2020 “It is going to be tough when you are rival against the best athletes from around the world. It will be my first Olympics and while the Asian Games was big, this is even bigger. All I can say is if it’s my day, I will come out on top and I will try my best to make that likely,” he signed off.

If you are a horse enthusiast who needs ideas for a vacation, the town of Saumur in the River Valley will be a loud scream.
The French cavalry in France has been based in Saumur since the 1700s, and you can come to see how things are done at the famous equestrian school, Cadre Noir. When you walk in your town, your street, you will notice the brightness of the stones in the Saumur monument: This is the tufa, a soft limestone with brilliant yellow under the sun. Discover the best things to do in Saumur.
[toc]
1. Musée des Blindés
One of the world's leading tank museums here is Saumur. The Musée des Blindés has almost 900 armored vehicles, only a quarter of which can be shown at any time.
This enormous cache of track vehicles was founded in 1977 and was the brainchild of Michel Aubry, an army colonel whose goal was to keep as many of these tanks in working order as possible.
So more than 200 are drivable, including a Schneider CA1 from 1916, as they’ll demonstrate at the three-day Carrousel military tattoo every July, which has been going for 160 years.
2. Château de Saumur
Crossing the Loire River into Saumur for the first time, the sight of the castle rising above the Loire River is a place that will stick with you. Dominating the horizon from a ridge, this landmark began as a fortress in the 900s.
Later, Anjou's René converted it into his Château dAAourour in the 1400s and the design has changed a lot since. The building has been covered with scaffolding for restoration over the past few years, closing lots of furniture.
3. Musée des Arts Décoratifs
On the first floor, there’s a lavish assortment of decorative items from the 1300s to the 1700s. A lot of space is devoted to ceramics, especially fine porcelain from the 17th and 18th centuries, but there are also great tapestries and furniture in pristine condition.
You are from Saumur, so the only thing that is right is that there should be room for equestrianism, where there are all sorts of horse-like items like harnesses, pedals, bits, and saddles, some of which become back to ancient times.
4. Pierre et Lumière
Set in a cave, Pierre et Lumière is a good omen for the wonders of the River Valley in Anjou and Touraine, with 20 attractions, including churches, châteaux and the entire town (the village of Baugé is a floating turned on), all carved from tufa in scale models.
The workmanship is almost unbelievable, and each sculpture is perfectly lit in solemn underground galleries. Pierre et Lumière is a useful option to keep up your sleeve in the summer as it has a stable temperature of 13 ° C here, perfect if you need to beat the heat.
5. Musée du Champignon
Pierre et Lumière’s neighbor is another journey underground, and you can get into the Musée du Champignon on a combined ticket. Mushrooms are big business around Saumur, giving France more than 80% of the white knot types.
You can rate your appetite for mushrooms in a mining workshop that harvests about 12 million tons per year and has the largest mushroom collection in Europe.
You will delve into a network of bunkers, housed in prehistoric troglodyte caves, to learn about 500 species of edible wild mushrooms and find some tricks in the trade to grow and harvest. There is also a store at the end where you can pick up some mushrooms for dinner.
6. Cadre Noir
The name, Cadre Noir comes from an elite army of cavalry instructors dressed in black, founded in 1828, and still makes up the faculty at the academy. Cadre Noir members regularly get gold in events, dress, and dance at the Olympics.
You can visit the academy for instructive tours of the facilities, and there’s enough to keep kids enthused as they’ll be able to meet and pet the horses. In the summer, there are extraordinary performances that demonstrate the accuracy of the Cadre Noire army.
7. Musée de Cavalerie de Saumur
In the old stables of Cadre Noir is a museum that will familiarize you with the 560-year history of the French cavalry.
You’ll go back to the early days of the cavalry during the reign of Charles VII in the 15th century and come up to speed with the mechanized divisions that replaced horses a century ago.
There are tableaux of history’s great battles and two galleries full of weapons, equipage, armor, harnesses, and uniforms. A few of the wooden stalls in the stables have also been preserved to give you a clearer picture of life in the cavalry.
8. Église Saint-Pierre
The church's glittering facade on the Place Saint-Pierre is baroque, dating back to the 1600s, but it hides a much older gothic and gothic structure. The church was founded around the time the Plantagenets held sway in this part of France.
The interior has a few intriguing things to note: There is a rug from the 1500s illustrating St. John's life and actions. Peter, while the wooden stalls in the choir date back to the 1400s.
9. Loire Boat Trip
Moments from the tourist offices Pont Cessart and Saumur, there, the jetty, from April to October, you can start the beautiful cruises on the Loire River. The most popular excursion takes less than an hour, in which you will be introduced to the heritage and nature along the riverbank with the help of a multilingual guide.
If you're lucky, you'll be able to spot a variety of waterfowl and fishing birds, and the journey ends with a glass of Bouvet-Ladubay Saumur, local fizzy sparkling wine.
10. Dolmen de Bagneaux
A few kilometers south of Saumur is an intriguing giant monument: Bagneaux Dolmen is one of the largest tombs in Europe, and is notable for its height, with a chamber as tall as 18 meters. The structure comprises 15 large slabs of sandstone and two wedging stones to help hold it all together.
Dolphins date back about 5,000 years and will be used as burial chambers. The sandstone material will have to travel far when it is mined on nearby Morrand and Terrefort hills, no more than 400 meters away.

In an Ancient Woodland, One of Italy’s Rare Gated Communities Flourishes
ROME — Name another golf community that shares its heritage with the Etruscans or was once a battlefield for medieval noblemen whose families produced a Who’s Who of popes. But wait, it gets better.
The Olgiata, as this tangle of woodland is called, has been invaded by barbarians. It was traded among families, put up for auction and given as a wedding gift.
Once flax was abundant here, as were barley and oats. In the 20th century, Olgiata was the home of the immortal racehorses Nearco and Ribot.
Three thousand years of history buys a lot of character.
Its latest incarnation? Olgiata not only is home to a world-famous golf course, but it has also introduced a modern twist in one of the oldest of old-world countries: It is one of Italy’s rare gated communities, an oasis of sprawling villas where gardeners toil and the wealthy work out under the watchful eye of surveillance cameras and security guards.
In a country that treasures its rich history, celebrates its culinary gifts and thrives on personal (and often kinetic) interaction, golfing and isolated luxury living have been slow to catch on.
Homegrown duffers and real estate investors here hope that is about to change.
In October, the Olgiata Golf Club will host the 76th Italian Open, a tournament growing in prize money — $7 million — and importance on the European Tour.
“We have the best players’ lounge on the professional tour,” said Barbara Zonchello, director of the tournament’s organizing committee. “We are known for the food and hospitality available to the players.”
This time, however, the organizers are trying to show that they offer more than a charming stop for pro golfers.
The stakes are high, as Italy prepares to host the Ryder Cup for the first time in 2022 at another course in Rome — Marco Simone Golf & Country Club.
Italy was an unconventional — if not risky — choice to host the prestigious biennial competition between the United States and Europe.
In Ireland and Britain, golf is so sacred that people will drive three hours to a course in the middle of nowhere and brave rains and winds for just about any professional tournament.
Spain and Germany also have much more mature golfing infrastructures and devoted participant bases and have produced champions like Seve Ballesteros and Bernhard Langer.
“The feeling toward golf in Italy is changing,” said Franco Chimenti, president of the Italian Golf Federation.
“More people are approaching this sport and leaving behind all prejudice that has stopped its growth in the past. We are constantly working to make golf accessible to everyone: children, women and the disabled.”
The emergence of Francesco Molinari as one of the most talented and recognizable golfers in the world has helped. The Turin native won the British Open last year and became the first Italian ever to hoist the Claret Jug.
He also was a key member of Europe’s victorious 2018 Ryder Cup team, as were last year’s Italian Open champion, Thorbjorn Oleson, and the 2017 victor, Tyrrell Hatton.
In the Ryder Cup, organizers see an opportunity to prove to the world that Italy is a worthy host, as well as to spread the gospel of golf to homegrown weekend golfers and international tourists.
“It is the most important golf event in the country and the peak of our road toward the Ryder Cup,” said its director, Gian Paolo Montali.
“It’s important for our golf tourism.”
Olgiata, this serene stretch of countryside 15 miles north of Rome, is perhaps the perfect showcase for this mission.
Behind 12-foot-high privet hedges, swimming pools reflect tile-roofed estates set back on large and lush lots.
There is a tennis and country club and, in a nod to its recent past, an equestrian center with rows of stables, show and jumping rings as well as a network of riding trails.
It has been a popular enclave for the international set. Embassy personnel, corporate executives and a handful of Lazio footballers and actors have found solace in estates that range from 1.5 million to 8 million euros, or $1.6 million to $8.8 million.
There are spring waters nearby; spas and Pilates instructors seem to outnumber trattorias and taverns.
Conservancy regulations have kept the landscape lush and offered a home to more than 30 different species of birds.
“It is a place for people who seek a healthy, active lifestyle,” said Stella Carnacina, chief executive of Carnacina Immobiliare, a real estate company that specializes in the area. “But they also want space and security and a feeling of being in the country but close enough to Rome.”
But the Olgiata Golf Club, which opened in 1961, is the jewel in this affluent community shaped by rolling woodlands near where Veio, the Etruscans’ richest city, once stood.
For 300 years, it toggled between war and peace with Rome before finally being overrun in 396 B.C. Two of the world’s foremost course designers have laid out a challenging, long course (7,566 yards), with towering trees and umbrella pines and small creeks running through it.
Since history plays a vital role in the perspectives of Italians, as well as golf aficionados, it is worth noting that Olgiata’s original designer was an Englishman named C.K. Cotton who, according to the golf course historian Geoffrey S. Cornish, descends from the design tree of Douglas Rolland, a Scot whose work in the late 19th century is considered among the most influential in the sport.
In 2010, the American course designer Jim Fazio, whose uncle George Fazio is also considered a modern master, gave it a makeover costing more than €1 million as part of Rome’s bid, which it eventually abandoned, to host the 2020 Olympics.
Olgiata is the only Italian entry on Golf Digest’s list of the World’s 100 Greatest Golf Courses. Still, Italy is barely a toddler in the world of golf.
In 1968, the golf writer Dan Jenkins came to Olgiata for Sports Illustrated to take the measure of the sport.
Then, Olgiata Golf Club was the host of the World Cup of Golf, an annual competition where two-man teams represent individual countries.
He was struck by an Italian fan who paid “$4.50 for a ticket and thinks it entitles him to stroll out on the greens and chat with the players.”
He wandered the fairways with “Italian royalty, socialites, movie stars, embassy employees and Via Veneto strollers” who stared at pros like Gary Player, Julius Boros and Lee Trevino, and “watched them ponder what is so tricky about the game.”
“All you got to do is grab a bunch of sticks and go thresh around in the trees,” Mr. Jenkins wrote.
Fifty-one years later, Italy now has 398 golf courses.
The Ryder Cup will take place across town at Marco Simone Golf & Country Club, which was built in the late 1980s by the fashion designer Laura Biagiotti.
It is perhaps a more telegenic site, with views of the dome of St. Peter’s Basilica. But the cradle of golf in the Eternal City remains at Olgiata.
“It is the most Italian of golf courses, and grounded into our history,” said Ms. Zonchello, the Italian Open director. “It is a course Italian golf grew up on.”
