The Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA) currently allows high schoolers in the state to compete in sports based on gender identity. However, a proposed policy amendment would require athletic programs to be offered separately for a boys' division, a girls' division and an "open" division.

Any athletes who wish to compete based on their gender identity would be required to participate in the "open" division, according to the proposal. Eligibility for the "open" division would also include athletes "in the process of transition that have undertaken medical changes," the proposal says.

A separate proposed amendment would also require participation in girls' sports to be limited to students whose biological sex is female. The amendment, modeled after guidance in Alaska, acknowledges such a move may spark legal challenges due to some interpreting the policy as "discriminatory."

"Focus is on fair competition and protecting the integrity of female sports," a listed "pro" of the change reads.

The proposals follow school boards across Washington state recently urging WIAA to rethink its current gender identity policy. The Central Valley School District Board of Directors last month approved a resolution asking the governing body to "restore equity" to sports, arguing current practices "frustrate" Title IX by "allowing biological males to unfairly compete with biological females in athletic endeavors."

The Mead School District Board of Directors passed a similar resolution last month, raising concerns over how allowing students to compete based on gender identity impacts safety in girls' sports.

Some high school coaches have also voiced frustration with WIAA's current practice, such as the coach of the girls' track and field team at Cedarcrest High School in Duvall. Dean Vergillo's team placed second at this year's state championships after a transgender runner on an opposing team won the girls' 400-meter sprint.

The runner's individual victory helped her team beat Vergillo's by just eight points in the overall scoring. Vergillo claimed his team "had no idea" the transgender athlete would be competing.

"My biggest disappointment in this situation is how [WIAA] didn’t prepare us for what was coming,” he said at the time. “We’ve had many coaches, through text, emails or just verbally, state their displeasure with the situation.”

Any amendment proposed by WIAA needs approval from 60% of voting members in order to pass. The WIAA Representative Assembly will begin voting on proposals in April.

Punk Times! My name is PK Penhasi and this is the free online hub for the culture zine I started with some of my friends in Olympia, Washington and is moving on to be based out of San Diego for the time being. Eventually, I hope to see it crossing state borders all over the Imperial core of the USA. This zine is evolving with each new issue as new collaborators come on and new ideas spring forth from the void in my head that some call a brain.

Self-published and printed for free at the library, I began this zine to keep my writing skills sharp after 4 years of college and no career prospects in mind. Specifically, a multi-genre zine seemed perfect for my many hobbies including literature, poetry, games, comics, journalism, and short prose. In addition, I want this to be a space that unites people, where your voice can be heard and perspectives shared without censorship or 450 character counts. Deep dives into culture, introspection, spirituality, philosophy, and fart jokes are the norm here!

In a world where social media algorithms seem to expand our connection with the world at large, they also are amazing at limiting what circles we actually get to bear witness too in echo chambers of similar post types. Eliana Lahote was born in La Push, Washington to Emily Clark and John Lahote. She spent her first few years in La Push before her mom left her dad and moved to The Bronx until her mother’s death when she was 20. She then had to move back to La Push and live with her dad. She had to get used to living in a quiet place as opposed to loud sounds of the city. Having to work multiple jobs to keep Emily and herself from being homeless, she feels oddly calm in the forest. It’s unsettling at first.

Eliana has continued nightmares from coming home to her mom OD’d on the floor and is very shy around her father’s friends and their kids. She is a very independent person and is sweet and kind when she isn’t in survival mode. But she’s a strong woman who had to fight plenty of her own battles. El doesn’t know much about the stories from the tribes from her dad’s side, but will soon get thrust into the world with the wolves always passing by her house.

Hello it is 1 am and I am irrationally angry aboit the fact that the USA capital is Washington DC and some asshole decided to make a new state called Washington just to confuse things and if you want to know who did it his name us Richard H. Stanton

also their state capital is called Olympia and I think that's cringe. The guy who named that was Isaac N Ebey but it's nit really his fault cause he was naming it after the Olympic mountain range. The Duwamish Indians originally called the mountain range Sun-a-do but spanish navigator Juan Perez called it Santa Rosalia cause Europeans think they know more than natives. But not to be outdone, some english navigator John Meares decided he knew better than the Indians and the other Europeans and called it Olympus. And what pissed me off is that you know this guy was not a professional mountain namer. This guy was probably itching to name shit and instantly jumped for the Greek gods the moment he saw a mountain range. So now we're stuck with mount Olympus on the actual opposite of the world from Greece, god damn it
