Sonny stared at the suspect through the glass in Olivia’s office. He crossed his arms over his chest, switching the weight in his hips as the large Italian man sat in the cold interrogation room. What was it about him? Why did Sonny feel this need… no, this urge, to go in there and interrogate him? He wasn’t even the arresting officer. Fin should take the lead on this one, if they were playing by the rules, but…

“You wanna go in there and talk to Al Pacino, Sonny? Maybe you can share lasagna recipes…” Fin mimicked Sonny, crossing his arms over his chest.

“Alright, first of all, he looks NOTHING like Al Pacino.” Sonny uncrossed his arms and turned to Fin. “Second,” He pointed a lazy finger at his coworker. “We don’t all know how to cook lasagna the right way. Some of those recipes died with other generations. And I mean, look at him! Do you think he’s ever cooked anything a day in his life?” He pointed to the suspect.

“I was just trying to be funny.” Fin pressed his lips together and rolled his eyes.

“I bet he couldn’t even make spaghetti without over-cooking the noodles.” Sonny rose his eyebrows, realizing that the joke was lost on his partner.

“Carisi, you gonna take a crack at The Godfather or what?” Olivia interrupted.

Sonny sighed and nodded his head, patting Fin on the shoulder before walking into the interrogation room.

“Finally! I’ve been waiting here for hours!” The suspect lifted his hands in the air and looked up at Sonny. His caramel brown eyes stopped and dilated at the sight of the young detective. “Who are you?”

“I’m Detective Dominick Carisi…” he looked back to see if Amanda or Fin were coming in behind him, but it looked like he was playing Good Cop all on his own today.

“Carisi…” He smiled and leaned back in his chair. “Are you related to Angelo Carisi?”

“Not that I know of… my father is Dominick Sr., and he never told me of any Angelos.” Why was he telling him this? This is an interrogation, not a family reunion. Get it together, Sonny.

“Dominick Senior?” He cracked his knuckles and leaned forward in his seat. “I’ll bet they call you Sonny, huh?” A charming smile crossed his lips.

“They might.” He undid the button on his suit jacket and leaned his hip against the table. “It looks like people call you for a lot of things.” He dropped a Manila envelope in front of him.

“We traced a wire transfer for over fifty thousand dollars to Robert Linetti for…” Sonny opened the envelope and pulled out the bank statement. “Services rendered.” He spun the piece of paper around so his suspect could get a better look. “You mind telling me what kind of services those were?”

The suspect smirked, looking up at him with guiltless eyes. “Money comes in, money comes out… what’s the difference?” He shrugged his shoulders.

“What’s the difference?” Sonny leaned forward. “The difference is that a girl was raped and almost killed in Linetti’s club last night.”

“What happens in Linetti’s club has nothing to do with me, we have a business arrangement; nothing more.” He placed his hands flat on the table, his pinkie brushing Sonny’s thigh.

“A business arrangement?” Sonny shuddered as a tingling sensation rushed down his leg.

“He needed some money to start up his business, it was the least I could do.” He moved the rest of his fingers onto the detective’s leg, tugging on the fabric of his pants.

“I’d do the same for you… treat you real nice, buy you a couple of ‘big boy’ suits.” He bit his lip and gave Sonny a look he’s never received from a man before.

“I…” He swallowed hard, feeling his hand travel further inward. He’s never let a suspect touch him before, let alone like this. Could Liv and Fin see where his hand was? Could they tell if he inched just a little bit closer to him before pulling away? Where was that video camera at again? “Are you…” He took in a deep breath. “Are you trying to bribe a police officer?”

“I’m just having a little fun.” The suspect slid his hand up and over as Sonny continued to stammer, forcing his plump pink lips to spread apart.

“Carisi!” Olivia opened the door, draining all the blood that was pumping between his legs.

The man removed his hand, taking his time to slowly draw it back over his gray pant leg. He winked at Sonny before looking up at Olivia.

“Congratulations, Mario, you’re lawyer’s here. You’re free to go… for now.” She placed her hands on her hips and let out a long sigh.

“Perfect timing.” He stood up. “Let me know when you find out who hurt that girl… I’d like to send them a message.” He reached into his pocket and pulled out a business card. Taking a pen out of the inside of his suit jacket, he wrote his cell phone number on the back of it, handing it to Sonny.

“If you ever need a new suit.” He pressed it into his palm, staring at him for a little too long.

“I’ll keep that in mind.” He wrapped his hand around the older man’s fingers, squeezing tightly.

Something about the way he looked, talked, and smelled made Sonny question himself. Why did he want to keep staring into those brown eyes? Why did he want to keep talking to him, to let his hands move wherever he wanted on his body? He was normally so sharp during his interrogations, he’s never let anyone get to him on the job.

“Mr. De Luca.” Mario’s lawyer stood next to Olivia, his briefcase in hand.

“Right.” He left the card in Sonny’s hand, smacking him hard on the shoulder before letting go. “New York’s finest.” He snickered. He met his lawyer across the room and looked back at Sonny one last time before leaving the room.

“What the hell was that?!” Olivia berated. “I’ll buy you a big boy suit? Are you kidding me?” She stormed toward him. “What if he was an actual suspect? What if he…”

“I’m sorry, Lieu. I know. I know, I just… I don’t know what happened.”

In these strange and unprecedented times, it’s comforting to have familiar rituals to fall back on. Though many of our favorite traditions have been curtailed by COVID, from Super Bowl parties to holiday travel, there’s one winter habit that’s completely unchanged this year: getting good and mad at the Golden Globe nominations.

Though awards season is operating on a weird and delayed schedule this year, the ceremonies will still take place, and this morning’s Globe noms marked the official beginning of the circuit. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association came through with a selection of nominees that include plenty of worthy contenders—alongside picks so random (and undeserved!) you can only scratch your head. Here are the biggest surprises and most outrageous snubs from the 2021 nominations.

Snub: I May Destroy You & Michaela Coel

This omission is so egregious that “snub” doesn’t even cover it. Michaela Coel’s I May Destroy You was arguably the best show of 2020, a wholly original and dizzyingly bold chronicle of a young woman trying to rebuild her life after a sexual assault. In the era of Peak TV, it’s rare to feel as though you’re watching something genuinely new, and that feeling permeated every frame of this searing, surprising show. Leaving the show out of the Best Drama category is bad enough, but for Coel to miss out on a nomination for either acting or writing is outrageous.

Snub: Jurnee Smollett (Lovecraft Country)

HBO’s Lovecraft Country did earn a nomination for Best Drama Series, but none of its actors were recognized for their work. Jurnee Smollett, whose breakout lead performance as Letitia Lewis anchored the series, is the strangest absence of all, particularly since she was widely tipped for some much-deserved recognition.

Surprise: Emily in Paris

Look, we all hate-binged Emily in Paris, we all enjoyed the memes, we all understand the show’s frothy appeal. But to name it one of the five best dramas of the year is straight batshit.

Snub: The supporting cast of Mrs. America

This shouldn’t really come as a surprise, since nominating the movie star while ignoring everybody else is an extremely Golden Globes move. But FX’s miniseries about conservative firebrand Phyllis Schlafly was stacked from top to bottom with extraordinary, nuanced performances from a largely female cast, including Uzo Aduba as Shirley Chisholm, Rose Byrne as Gloria Steinem, and Margot Martindale as Bella Abzug—all of whom deserved a nod.

Surprise: A welcome spotlight moment for female directors

In the 77-year history of the Golden Globes, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association has nominated a grand total of five female directors. In 2018, Natalie Portman memorably called out the ceremony onstage for its lack of female directing nominees. And this year, the HFPA took notice, nominating three women in its Best Director, Motion Picture category. One Night in Miami’s Regina King earned a well-deserved nod, as did Promising Young Woman‘s Emerald Fennell and Nomadland’s Chloé Zhao.

Snub: Black directors and performers in the Best Drama category

It’s baffling how many superb films made by Black directors—and starring Black talent—were omitted from the Best Drama category, despite performances from those films recognized in the acting categories. Spike Lee’s Da 5 Bloods, Shaka King’s Judas and the Black Messiah, George C. Wolfe’s Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom and Regina King’s One Night in Miami (which earned her a Best Director nom) were all absent from Best Drama. All five of the nominated movies focus mostly on white characters.

Snub: Minari

Lee Isaac Chung’s acclaimed drama about a Korean family who move to Arkansas to start a farm in the 1980s has been widely tipped as an awards frontrunner this year. Unsurprisingly, the internet was furious when the Globes placed the film in the Foreign Language category rather than Best Drama. Thanks to a controversial HFPA rule, Minari is ineligible for Best Drama because a majority of its dialogue is in a language other than English—and according to Chung, the movie’s distributor chose to enter it in the Foreign Language category rather than Best Drama. So while this may not meet the technical definition of a snub, it’s still a disappointment.

Surprise: James Corden

Asked to guess which member of The Prom‘s star-studded cast would be nominated for a Globe, most smart pundits (and honestly most regular people) would probably have put their money on Meryl Streep. But instead, it was Corden’s widely panned performance that earned the sole acting nomination for Ryan Murphy’s splashy musical dramedy.

Welcome to the ninth year of Every Movie Has a Lesson’s “Awards Tracker.”  My goal every year is simple: Help each and every one of you win your Oscar pools. As a member of three recognized awards-voting bodies of film critics (OFCS, OFTA, and Chicago Indie Critics), it’s a pleasure and honor to see my own picks made it into the award season discussion. I loved Joey King, Michelle Pfeifer, Kaitlin Deaver, Rose Leslie, Cate Blanchett, Ellen and Portia, Phoebe Waller- Bridge, Cynthia Erivo, Eddie Murphy and Paige Butcher, Brad and Leo, Zoe Kravitz, Helen Mirren, Annabelle Wallis, Lisa Lu, Bill Hader, Kerry Washington, Lisa Bonet, Colin Jost and Scarlett Johansson, Patricia Arquette and Nicole Ansari-Cox.

The SAG award also had some very well dressed which included Reese Witherspoon, Michelle Williams, Lupita Nyongo, Zoey Kravitz, Millie Bobbie Brown the Schitts Creek cast and Patricia Arquette. Christina Applegate was a bit too old school but she rocked it. The people on the SAG carpet were very chatty.  Parasite was named best cast. Other winners included Zellweger, Joaquin, Sam Rockwell, The Crown, Laura Dern and Dinklage. I have not seen The Morning Show but I was a bit shocked to see Jennifer Aniston win over Jody Comer, Helena Bonham Carter, Olivia Coleman or Elizabeth Moss. This was an award from her fellow actors so I suppose they wanted to send her some love. Her ex Brad Pitt won as well and went on and on about himself.

The Grammys were pretty somber with a lot of ballads and the sadness of the death of Kobe Bryant that day. Aerosmith refused to let drummer Joey Kramer play with them and many found the performance a mess. A wonderful moment was Tanya Tucker and Brandi Carlile with their song that went on to win best country song. Tanya Tucker won best country album. Other winners included Billir Eilish, Lizzo, Elvis Costello and the imposters, Gary Clark Jr., Nipsey Hussle and John Legend, Willie Nelson, Michelle Obama and Dave Chappelle. I had no love for the fashion of Ariana Grande or Rosalia. My best dressed were Lizzo, Camila Cabello, Elle Mai, Jameela Jamill, Billy Porter, Bebe Rexha and Alessandria Ambrosia.

The 2020 Critics’ Choice Awards, often regarded as one of the most reliable Academy Awards foretellers in Hollywood, is airing live from Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, California on Sunday night with Taye Diggs hosting.

Martin Scorsese‘s The Irishman leads the pack with 14 nominations, while Quentin Tarantino‘s Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood scored 12 overall nods. The popular war drama 1917 received eight nominations while Greta Gerwig‘s retelling of Little Women received nine.

2019 has been a very high quality year for film and I feel this has been the toughest list to put together in the whole ten years of Let’s Go The Movies. Which is certainly a very good and amazing thing for cinema and films. Not only have this years best come from cinema releases but Netflix have really come into the picture with some incredible films with amazing performances. With my list it might feel a little bit all over the place with some of the films that are on it due to UK release dates, but also take into consideration that I have also been lucky enough to see some previews of films as well.

I had 22 films that were on my list for Best Films of 2019 and it has been very tough to knock that down to the 10 that have then made up this list. Just missing out (Brittany Runs a Marathon, Can You Ever Forgive Me?, Klaus, Judy, Crawl)

10. Ready or Not (Review) The most dangerous game of hide and seek that you may ever witness, Ready or Not was a massive surprise film in 2019 and it is so unique that I hope more people get to see it after its cinema release earlier this year. It has some fantastic performances, manages humour within very serious scenes and will also make you want to cover your eyes as well.

9. Fighting With My Family (Review) This film felt very special as a reminder of my love for WWE wrestling back in the late 90s and early 00s, I even used to attend wrestling sessions myself as loved it that much. So seeing an amazing story of a British woman who managed to get to the very top, with a supportive and very different family was very enjoyable. With Florence Pugh leading the film as well, with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson being the driving force behind the film after seeing a documentary on Paige and the family.

8. Ad Astra (Review) Quite possibly the most visually stunning film that I have seen this year and I really feel sad that Ad Astra seemed to quickly come and go at the cinema without much talk around it. Everything about it looked amazing and it did not follow the same usual story about space. A terrific leading performance from Brad Pitt and addresses feeling lonely, which is surely a theme everyone can understand at some stage of life.

7. Little Women (Review) Quite possibly one of the most adapted novels of all time and in 2019 we got slightly updated characters which worked out so well with the truly outstanding cast boasted in this one. I wasn’t fully sure if we needed this film but it turns out we really did and it was an outstanding adventure from start to finish, the timeline of the film is done with shifts over the seven year period which works in a fantastic manner.

6. Wild Rose (Review) It feels like a very long time ago that this film was released but that could be because I cannot remember a time not listening to Glasgow (No Place Like Home) which is an amazing song both in the film and out of the film as well, I really hope it manages to get the Oscar nomination for best original song. Along with that song we get a terrific performance from Jessie Buckley and as strange as it may sound I feel so proud of her and happy for her. Considering how young she was on UK talent show looking for the next Nancy for Oliver, to then do this outstanding piece of work. A lovely film highlighting Scotland and country music. Not forgetting a nice supporting role from Julie Walters!

5. The Favourite (Review) A release from the very start of the year that felt like such a wait for the UK. It is another unique film, I feel as though that has been a common theme throughout this top 10 list which can only be a great thing considering it means I have plenty of different types of films. Olivia Colman in her Oscar winning performance with Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz both nominated. A very female empowering film based on well rumours quite frankly. A very different take on anything to do with the Royal Family and its well hilarious!

4. The Farewell (Review) The Farewell is about a really sad event, cancer but the grandmother not actually being told that is what it is. It’s actually based on a real lie, as soon as that popped up on the screen then I just knew I was going to be hooked with this one. Mainly in Chinese and learning about a very different culture which just so happens to actually work considering she is still alive to this day. It gives you hope as we have all gone through a loved one suffering with cancer and hearing that word seems to be the worst thing for the mental side as well. Mixture of amusing moments was something The Farewell really managed to nail.

3. The Irishman (Review) So much talk around The Irishman and of course that is going to happen when Martin Scorsese manages to get Robert De Niro and Al Pacino back together again along with Joe Pesci! Too much of the talk has been around the running time but I have watched the film fully twice and did not find any issue with it. The performances are that good from the leading and supporting cast that you find yourself engrossed in the world of Jimmy Hoffa.

2. Marriage Story (Review) This film broke me into so many pieces that even the next day I did not feel quite the same. The level of acting is among the best I have ever seen with the argument scene from Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson, raw and felt so real that it really is something else to witness. Showing how people can change even when they have been together for so long and while they want to remain friends that it really is not possible after a certain point.

1. Jojo Rabbit (Review) I am not even fully sure how to start with how much I adored this film, I wasn’t really sure if a satire was something I would ever really like. But I can confirm that Jojo Rabbit has well and truly opened me up to having a different mindset towards this type of film. Roman Griffin Davis delivers one of the best child performances I have ever seen, so I am going to claim of all time. He is outstanding and the stereotypes addressed in this film are done in a laugh out loud manner. It also contains a truly tragic and upsetting scene which took me by surprise.

Schitt’s Creek Nabs Five Nominations for the 2020 Critics’ Choice Awards

Moira Rose once famously said that her favourite season is ‘Awards Season’ and we suspect the crew of Schitt’s Creek will agree with her on that as the show has scored a total of five nominations at the 2020 Critics’ Choice Awards.

The nominations for next year’s ceremony were announced overnight and every single member of the Rose family was recognized for their work in the show. Catherine O’Hara has been nominated for Best Actress in a Comedy Series, Eugene Levy for Best Actor in a Comedy Series, Dan Levy for Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series and former FASHION cover star Annie Murphy for Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series. Plus, the series itself is nominated for Best Comedy Series.

It’s not the first time the show has been recognized by the industry, having previously been nominated for four Emmys this year also.

In the Best Comedy Series category, the show is up against Fleabag, Barry, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Mom, One Day at a Time and PEN15. In the individual categories, Eugene is nominated alongside Ted Danson, Bill Hader and Paul Rudd amongst others, whilst O’Hara’s category is hotly contested with the likes of Christina Applegate, Alison Brie, Rachel Brosnahan, Kulia Louis-Dreyfus, Kirsten Dunst and Phoebe Waller-Bridge all also nominated.

Over in film, Martin Scorcese’s The Irishman received 14 nominations overall, Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood scored 12, and Greta Gerwig’s Little Women got a total of seven nods. Jennifer Lopez also scored her first Critics’ Choice nomination for Hustlers, and Booksmart (starring former FASHION cover star Beanie Feldstein) also received a nod in the Best Comedy category.

The Critics’ Choice Awards are largely considered to be one of the key indicators for the Oscars. According to EW, “The Critics’ Choice Awards have predicted the Oscar’s eventual Best Picture champion winner six times” since 2009.
