BECOMING A WARD !

Evangeline’s sister Mary-Beth who was thirteen years her senior had wicked conviction and drive. She read chemistry books under the cover of candle light and kicked up a storm when male teachers doubted her ability to perform in male-dominated subjects. Her ambitions got her to Kingsburry College where she made friends with a kindhearted girl in the year above her who reminded her of Evangeline. Mary-Beth and Adelia became fast friends and by extension so did Evangeline. After Amelia’s untimely demise, Mary-Beth still remained close with Richard through medical school. Due to the nature of the company Kingsburry College and their alums kept, Benny Sharpe had no problem cozying up with his wife’s friends. After 12 years in the the senate and two presidents, Benny Sharpe was appointed to the secretary of defence policy office as a bipartisan olive branch. His views on the escalating Gulf war made him amendable to his Republican compatriots. Evangeline felt a growing sense of unease regarding her husband’s late nights at the office and the black SUVs she continually saw. She felt both Benny and Reuben slipping away from her but she chalked the latter up to early ages of teenagedom. The extra stress was threatening to boil over, as she fought with Benedict whenever he was home and circled the drain of paranoia when alone.

In the hot Virginia summer of 1989, Evangeline had left earlier in the morning at the behest of her girlfriends who thought she needed a break. Benedict Sharpe was visited by three men a twelve year old Reuben did not recognize. He had seen this kind of thing before, his dad had a rolodex that could rival the president. They didn’t acknowledge Reuben’s presence upon entry and his father asked him to stay downstairs and away from his office for the duration of their meeting. He nodded silently, knowing this would never be the case. As they talked, Reuben inched closer to the room on his hands and knees as not to make much noise.

There was shouting and hushed bickering, Reuben couldn’t make out any of it even with his face to the carpet runner as he squinted beneath the closed door. Eventually growing bored of whatever diplomacy his father was conducting he returned to their TV room to lay upside down on the couch and watch baseball. Orioles and Angels.

It wasn’t til his father was angrily ushering the men out, red with anger and a glowing cigar did the young boy even remember there were guest. The front door was slammed shut and his father swore every word Reuben wasn’t allowed to say as he stomped back up the stairs and loudly announced he wished not to be disturbed. Reuben did just that. Watching Kirk McCaskill standing at the plate.

He was restless and growing anxious of the silence from his dad’s office. By now he’d be racing up and down the stairs complaining about everyone’s inability to do anything. He made his way back up and knocked on the office door and awaited a response. The silence was eerily long. He twists the knob and saw his father face down on his desk, cigar still burning in his Navy ashtray. He stared for what felt like an eternity before ultimately closing the door and returning downstairs. Something didn’t feel right but what was he to do? He fell asleep on the couch and was only awoken by his mother’s scream.

It was Mary-Beth who expressed her concerns for the safety of her nephew on a hushed phone call to Richard. She phoned and asked if it’d be possible for him to keep Reuben for a few days at most, until she settled things with her younger sister. Evangeline was inconsolable and was sent to a home for women for the foreseeable future. Though Mary-Beth was somewhat willing to take Reuben back despite her schedule— Richard already had a few wards and didn’t mind homing Reuben.

LIFE AS A WARD !

Reuben has bitchy older sibling energy despite the fact he wanted to be accepted so badly. He enjoyed being very woe is me through his time at Woodrow. If Richard was around, he was turning his nose up at everything but with the other wards, he's probably not that bad. Probably spent a lot of time with Chef Pierre just eating his mis en place or bothering Davis while he was groundskeeping.

AESTHETIC

Too good looking for the way he treats himself. Tired glossed over eyes and a general discontentment with existence at any moment. Dried out ballpoint pens, and clammy handshakes. Someone you want to hate but also feel bad for.

EDUCATION !

first year 13-14 home schooled at Woodrow before going to the local co-ed preparatory school McCune (completely fictional but think phillips exeter!). Undergraduate statistics degree at Georgetown (go Hoyas!) and then a graduate degree in public policy most likely ???

EXTRACURRICULARS !

Reuben's only extracurricular was walking the halls and grounds, not particularly good at anything— he much prefered bothering the staff with his ramblings when no one else was around.

- they're the head scientist from Orion and Oriole's old precinct, and back before they were transferred the three of them were their own little Olive-Otto-Oscar/Olympia-Otis-Oona type trio if you get what i'm saying

- they're like the kind of guy who can improvise a whole gadget out of a different device like a calculator or something, or even parts of broken gadgets and things like that. they do this kind of thing for fun a lot of the time as well and have a ton of just totally random gadgets that they invented because they were bored. oftentimes they'll build the gadget and figure out what it does afterwards, and they'll also just build things to see if they can (for science of course)

- they like taking things apart and putting them back together i think. they probably deconstruct a lot of pens and mechanical pencils for fun. knowing them they've probably also turned some of those pens into gadgets when putting them back together

- they also like to try and replicate devices from movies and tv shows and video games and stuff to make them into gadgets. they've been trying to make a gadget that works the same way as the portal gun from Portal for over a year now but they've had with no success so far (they're a big fan of Portal btw. i think this says a decent amount about them as a character)

- basically they're like the resident goofy inventor character who keeps accidentally blowing things up and stuff because they were bored and wanted to see what happened if they fired this very unstable gadget they built. for science of course this is all for science

Couple of years ago, he was having a good time, he was 14 years old when his friends are extremely busy for a moment. when his parents are picking him up from school, The bullies appears in front Oscar's parents while Oscar walking towards the car and then he's being attack while his parents save his life. That's what Oscar become a scardy person. And the bullies run off. Oscar has a special surprise from his parents. they were taking him to the beautiful desert. in the meanwhile with Oscar, He found something shiny like a treasure when his parents are exploring. he found a beautiful Zircon that use for the belt as a prince and the Strange present he also find it. As soon his parent came back for going home, Oscar is taking it hide it. And when he returned home, Oscar is opening the present in his room. the shapeshifter appear out from the box. "Whao! it's okay I'm not going to hurt you. and who are you?" he said. The shapeshifter introduced himself, saying "I'm Spheric. And you will be the power." this is how it ends.

The Minnesota Twins have been around the .500 mark all season long. The team surpassed that mark with a good week of baseball, but the Orioles beat them last night and had a chance to send the Twins back to .500 today. The Twins struck first in the first as Eddie Julien lined a one-out double to center. He reached third base on a grounder and would score on a wild pitch. This put the Twins up by a run, but it wouldn’t last long. Ryan O’Hearn, Austin Hays, and Aaron Hicks started the second with singles. Colton Cowser and Ramon Urias drew bases loaded walks. Adam Frazier knocked in a pair with a single to left and Gunnar Henderson drove in one more with a base hit to left. Anthony Santander capped off the inning with a run-scoring single to right. Baltimore had a 6-1 lead after two frames. Tyler Wells ran with the run support and tossed five good innings. He hit a snag in the sixth when Byron Buxton singled and Donovan Solano doubled him home. The Twins pulled within four after six frames. The Orioles bullpen stood up as Bryan Baker threw two scoreless innings. Danny Coulombe had a scoreless ninth and the Orioles took the series from the Twins today at Target Field. 

-Final Thoughts- Sonny Gray had the one bad inning that costed him today. He almost left in the second, but gave the team some length. He went six innings and allowed six runs on six hits with three walks and five strikeouts. Oliver Ortega threw two scoreless innings and Jorge Lopez put up a zero in the ninth. Donovan Solano led the offense with three doubles. Eddie Julien and Michael Taylor had two hits each. The Twins hit 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position and left eight men on base. Today’s game was a quick two hours and twenty-seven minutes. Tomorrow, Kyle Gibson faces Joe Ryan in the finale of the first half.

April 21, 2022 - Olive-backed Oriole (Oriolus sagittatus)

Found in parts of northern and eastern Australia, Indonesia, and Papua New Guinea, these orioles live in woodlands, forests, rainforests, and urban areas with trees. Usually foraging alone or in pairs, they eat insects and fruit. Females build cup-shaped nests secured to forked horizontal branches of trees or tall shrubs from bark strips, grass, and spiderwebs and incubate the eggs alone. Both parents feed the chicks.

Olive-Backed Oriole, at Karumba. The horizontal yellowish stripe across the neck is a leaf and not part of its colours. This is the first time I've seen one live.

An under-utilised native tree: Glochidion ferdinandi

This is the ever adaptable Cheese tree Glochidion ferdinandi, I would love to see these used more widely in our streetscape as street trees but also as shade trees in gardens or parks. They have the same glossy luscious look as a Lilly Pilly or Waterhousia but with the added benefit of being semi-deciduous in winter.

Glochidion ferdinandi is named after its sweet little cheese parcel shaped fruit which burst open to reveal bright red seeds which attract a range of fruit and seed eating birds including the, Lewin’s Honeyeater, Olive-backed Oriole, rainforest pigeons and doves, and parrots.

The Cheese tree grows from anywhere between 5 and 20 metres, sometimes it can be seen as a suckering shrub if it’s in an unfavourable or stress inducing position. The leaves are a food source for the larvae of the Shining Pencil-blue Butterfly.

The dense crown of Glochidion ferdinandi lends it to be utilised as a great screening tree or it can even be clipped to create a tall hedge. It grows quickly and once established is very hardy. What more could you ask for from a native tree?

She likes to collect seeds for her garden. Both as a hobby and for her experiments.

Astrid just lays in bed and uses magic to cook for her, since she doesn’t want to bother other oriole while she’s weak

10. Do they have any regrets?

Her first and only break up with Diavolo. Granted he was too busy with work, but she didn’t make an effort to convey her feelings properly and broke up with him instead, reasoning it was better since they were only together because she wanted his pact and power. However she came to regret centuries later.

She’s glad they’re together again.

Full name: Deirdra Margalit Araya

Meaning of name: Variant of Deirdre; “Wanderer” in Irish

Family:

Jaume Margalit (deceased): Deirdra’s younger brother by three years. They were as close as two siblings can be, and Deirdra often protected him from whoever dared to mock or try to hurt him. Just like his parents, Jaume had a strong sense for justice and was also a rebel that drove him to join the Nationalists in secret before his worried parents could keep him from it. His death at the hands of a Loyalist soldier was what drove Deirdra to leave their village as well to fight for a better future and back then, avenge their beloved brother.

Meritxell Araya (deceased): Deirdra’s mother, a seamstress. Their role model in their childhood, Meritxell was a pillar in the community and a woman with an iron will who stood up for those in need. The rupture of her family in the Civil War and having to let her oldest child go after her youngest one was murdered took a heavy toll on her but also saw her fervently supporting the Nationalists and housing them. She was killed by Loyalists and the Margalit Araya family home burnt to the ground as a warning to all those in Valanguer who dared to act against Queen Jacinta.

Daví Margalit: Deirdra’s father whose biggest hobby is reading and briefly was assistant to the owner of a book shop. He took on the role of teaching in the village school of Valanguer and gave his love for literature to his children as well. Daví wanted a better world for Jaume and Deirdra and supported the Nationalists who had taken up arms against the Queen Jacinta and her loyalists, which ultimately got him into prison. It’s Deirdra’s biggest wish to see their father be a free man again.

Enkidu: A beech marten and Deirdra’s animal companion and familiar. One night while some humans were camping in the woods, he was attracted by the warmth of the fire and the next morning Deirdra woke up to him being curled up next to them. Even though they can’t communicate that well with each other, they are inseparable.

Their straight hair, originally dark blond, has been dyed dark blue, reaches their chin and is either in a short bun with a few loose strands or completely loose. Their eyebrows are thin and their original dark blond color while their eyes are light green. Their face is heart-shaped with a pointy chin. They have a slightly roman-shaped nose and thin lips as well as a tooth gap between their front teeth. 

Deirdra carries themself with a swagger and is very expressive when talking.

Backstory:

Deirdra Margalit was born as the oldest child of Daví and Meritxell in the village of Valanguer in the countryside of Oriol. They grew up with not a lot of wealth, while not being the ones off the worst in their village, but learned to value even the small things and treasure a community in which everyone helped everyone - very true to the sentiment of “it takes a village to raise a child”. Their father was an intellectual within the community and their mother, who was seen by many as a leader in Valanguer, were very openly critical of the Oriolà monarchy when it took a more hostile turn towards its rural population and got involved in a war led by their bigger neighboring patron empire Calpacia to the point where young adults were forcibly drafted. The populace divided itself soon into  sympathizers of the Loyalists who supported the ongoing course led by the Oriolià Queen Jacinta and the Nationalists who were led by the Queen’s cousin, which meant that even in a small village acquaintances and even friends could become enemies. 

Their father was arrested and imprisoned as a political enemy when the political infighting divided the populace into . The point that pushed them to actually get involved in the Nationalist armed resistance was the death of Jaume. After an argument with their mother, Deirdra left as well without knowing it would be the last time they would ever see her. Meeting many other nationalists on their way to the capital, they soon found a home in the currently besieged capital and met the daughter of a butcher named Renée. Meeting a kindred spirit who had also recently lost family helped them adapt to this new living situation and they soon became comrades-in-arms and more. When the Nationalist leaders called for fighters to take the fighting outside of the city and into the rural areas where the Queen’s Men had taken refuge, they immediately volunteered. For a year, their life consisted of camping in the wilderness, awful food and fearing of getting shot at whenever they passed a hill. It was there when they met their familiar and gave them the name Enkidu after a character from a story their father used to love.

Three years after the first battle the Civil War ended with the Nationalists’ loss of the capital of Oriol and its siege led by the Loyalists. Queen Jacinta gave the choice to everyone who fought for the Nationalists to lay down their weapons and either leave the country as exiles or be put in prison for treason against the crown and receive a lighter sentence, most of Deirdra’s comrades made their choice, fully aware that the Queen’s word couldn’t be trusted and traitors would most likely get executed and thus continued the fight at home. Deirdra themself chose to leave with Renée as they were young and could still have a life together - and end up regretting it for a very long time, when Renée was unable to leave at the last minute.

The following years in exile Deirdra travelled the world with other Oriolà exiles, on one occasion even travelling to Nevivon, and developing a network all across the continent. Their travels led them to Vesuvia where they settled thanks to the help of an exiled politician and integrated them into the local Oriolà community. They met the magicians Asra and Ximena when wanting to progress in their magical studies and became good friends with Julian, often frequenting the Rowdy Raven with him. Their friendship with Sayelle, whom they met thanks to Asra, briefly became romantic and grew steadily until the plague hit Vesuvia and its inhabitants were overwhelmed by it. Deirdra’s instinct to leave the city and those infected behind was met by refusal by both Ximena and Sayelle, and the gap between Deirdra and Sayelle was only broadened when Deirdra decided to aid Asra in a ritual that would bring the Devil himself into the mortal world while it was actually intended to bring Ximena back to life. The fact that their resurrected friend was unable to recognize any of them and their presence actually caused her pain saw Deirdra cutting ties with Asra and almost exclusively being around their compatriots.

The Twins At A Glance- The Minnesota Twins have fallen on hard times over the past two months. Since May 1st, they are (23-30), which is the third-worst record in the American League in that span. The pitching staff has allowed the third-least amount of runs and scored the second-fewest runs. The Twins scored just three runs in Atlanta and hit 0-for-23 with runners in scoring position in the series. The front office needs to decide on guys like Joey Gallo, Max Kepler, among others. Do they bring up Matt Wallner, who has been raking at St. Paul. He is hitting .381 with two homers and five RBI over his the past seven games. Chris Williams has ten homers over the past month. Something needs to change because the starting pitching has been very good and deserves to win. Griffin Jax has thrown 14 2/3 scoreless innings. Jordan Balazovic has a 1.50 ERA over six innings. Oliver Ortega could be used in higher leverage innings with injuries to Brock Stewart and Jose De Leon. Cole Sands has started a rehab assignment with the Saints. Caleb Thielbara has started throwing, but likely won’t return until after the All-Star Break. 

The Orioles At A Glance- The Orioles are having a solid season as the young core is really starting to click. The Reds took two of three from the O’s this week, but the Orioles are (3-3) on their current homestand. Austin Hays has been a solid bat with a .314 average. Baltimore picked up Aaron Hicks, who has been figuring things out with a .270 average, four homers and eleven RBI since joining the team. Adley Rutschman is becoming one of the best catchers in baseball with ten homers and thirty-four RBI. Baltimore is hitting .253 as a team. The starting pitching hasn’t been a strong suit with a 4.66 ERA, which is twenty-first in baseball. Former Twin farmhand Tyler Wells has been their most consistent starter. He has a 3.75 ERA over sixteen games. The bullpen has a 3.79 ERA, which is eleventh-best in MLB. Yennier Cano has been a bright spot out of the ‘pen. The Former Twin has a 1.14 ERA in 39 1/3 innings of work with thirty-five strikeouts. Felix Bautista has allowed just five earned runs over 37 2/3 innings, while locking down twenty-one saves. Danny Coulombe has thirty-seven strikeouts over 27 2/3 innings of work. Kyle Gibson leads the team with eight wins. 

What To Watch For- The Twins went (4-3) last year against the Orioles. The O’s took two out of three games in Baltimore in May then the Twins walked them off twice last July. Pablo Lopez didn’t allow a run over five innings in his lone start against the Orioles. Dean Kremer gave up five runs over four innings in his only start against the Twins. Bailey Ober has never faced the O’s. Kyle Bradish gave up four runs in four innings in his only start versus Minnesota. Sonny Gray is (6-5) with a 4.60 ERA in twelve starts against the Orioles. Cole Irivin gave up one run over 6 2/3 innings in his only game against the Twins. The Twins season is at a crossroads. They can either turn it around or it feels like it could sink back down. They are in first place of the American League Central and need a strong couple of weeks before getting guys back after the All-Star Break.

Every single person looking up to see them. Bros, yes. But lovely in the golden light with brims swung to the back. I want shoulders like they have.
