PS Gahlaut: Ensuring Fertilizer Supply During Crucial Times
What makes this achievement remarkable is its timely execution. At a critical juncture when India faced a peak demand for DAP (Di-ammonium phosphate), the seamless arrival, rapid unloading, and swift distribution coordinated by MV Patricia Oldendorff alleviated any fears of scarcity. PS Gahlaut emphasized, "If India had experienced a shortage of DAP during the rabi season, it could have led to significant challenges. Crops such as wheat and barley might have struggled to thrive, potentially resulting in a food shortage. This could have driven up food prices and negatively impacted farmers' incomes. Additionally, without the right fertilizers, farmers would have had to rely on less effective alternatives, which could harm both the soil and the environment."

Blue Visby Solution showed significant CO2 savings
The first trials of the Blue Visby Solution prototype reduced CO2 emissions by an average of 17.3 per cent during voyages on two bulk carriers chartered by CBH Group, a member of the Blue Visby consortium, Splash 247 reports.
In March and April 2024, the first trials of the Blue Visby Solution, a project best described as a mitigation tool for sail-fast-wait-time operations, took place on the bulk carriers Gerdt Oldendorff and Begonia. The two vessels made ballast voyages to CBH Group’s grain terminal in Kwinana, Australia.
The test results showed CO2 savings of 28.2 per cent for Gerdt Oldendorff and 12.9 per cent for Begonia, averaging 17.3 per cent at 14 knots.
In the case of Gerdt Oldendorff, the prototype tests resulted in CO2 savings of 7.9 per cent when compared to the vessel’s assumed speed of 12 knots. If the vessel increased speed to 14 knots, the potential CO2 savings would be 28.2 per cent. Several speed benchmarks were tested – revolutions per minute, idle times and normal situations. The parties also had a choice of how to calculate the financial cost of fuel savings and extended ocean crossing – using contract rates or market rates provided by the Baltic Exchanges.

Oldendorff: Newcastlemax Biofuel Trial | Merchant Marine Jobs
Vale, working in partnership with Oldendorff Carriers, have just commenced their first biofuel voyage on a bulk vessel. The trial is taking place on an Oldendorff vessel performing a laden Vale voyage from Brazil to Asia, carrying a full cargo of iron ore.
Tumblr media
The Hinrich Oldendorff (209,113 deadweight built 2016) loaded the biofuel in Singapore on October 16th on the ballast voyage to Brazil. The vessel then loaded Vale’s iron ore this Tuesday November 28th at Guaiba Island Terminal and will consume the blended biofuel on the laden leg from Brazil to Asia.
The B24 biofuel on board is a blend of about 24% used cooking oil of vegetable origin (286 metric tonnes) and the balance is fuel oil. The product supplied is both European Union Renewable Energy Directive (EU RED) compliant and certified by International Sustainability & Carbon Certification (ISCC). The expected well-to-wake CO2 equivalent savings is around 18% or 784 metric tonnes of CO2 equivalent and will contribute to Vale’s Scope 3 emission reduction.

Sometimes one of the joys of a port call is the chance to give something back to the wider maritime community, and so it was on 26 April for Captain Turbureanu and his crew on the bulk carrier "CORA OLDENDORFF" when they had the pleasure of receiving 31 students from the nautical school in Brindisi (the Istituto Tecnico Economico e Tecnologico Carnaro-Marconi-Flacco-Belluzzi), together with tutors Stefania Catanzaro and Antonio Catanzaro. A plainly industrious, very happy and much enjoyed visit was organised in liaison with the Brindisi Port Maritime Advisor, and following safety familiarisation there were tours of the Engine Room, Deck and Bridge, with crew members describing the vessel and its equipment, and answering many interesting and also searching questions. Restorative fruit juice and snacks were then provided, and the students disembarked with many positives to ponder in relation to a possible career at sea.

Seafarer App Mapping Ocean Pollution Used to Clear Isle of Man Beaches
The ocean pollution mapping platform Eyesea, which is supported by and uses data compiled by the commercial shipping industry, was recently deployed for the first time to organize a coastal clean-up operation. Launched in beta trials at the end of 2020, the system seeks to use data submitted by seafarers on commercial ships and recreational boaters to map pollution in the oceans and shoreline to help local authorities with clean-up operations.
The Eyesea app was used as part of a survey of the coastline of Isle of Man after the island was battered last month by storms and high tides, which washed up large amounts of rubbish and debris as well as fishing nets. The platform was used to highlight areas where the concentrations of debris and rubbish had washed up, helping organizers to plan a clean-up initiative that saved time and maximize their efforts.
More than 1,100 pounds of trash that littered a large area of Douglas Beach on the Isle of Man located in the Irish Sea was collected in a join clean-up event organized by the charities Beach Buddies and PlasticBusters. More than 100 volunteers were dispatched to the areas with the highest concentration of debris using the data from Eyesea.
Jaime Amoedo, founder of PlasticBusters, said: “It was great to be able to test the Eyesea app for the first time, and it gave our group of volunteers quality information, in advance, about the specific locations that waste had washed up on Douglas Beach. This allowed us to focus our efforts on those areas that needed the most attention.”

Eyesea was launched in December 2020 with the participation of more than 60 commercial ships and super yachts preparing to deploy the app to collect observational pollution data contributing to building comprehensive maps designed to inform and empower government and NGO environmental efforts. The Eyesea prototype has been tested by ships operating in Canada, the United States, Australia, New Zealand, India, Hong Kong, Chile, South Africa, the Isle of Man, and the UK. The proof-of-concept tests were conducted in January by crew members aboard one of Oldendorff’s dry bulk carriers sailing in the Atlantic Ocean off the east coast of Florida and by seafarers manning a vessel managed by Union Marine Management Services sailing near Guinea-Bissau and Senegal off the west coast of Africa.
“We are often asked what we do with the Eyesea data we collect and how we will use it. This event is one answer to those questions,” said Graeme Somerville-Ryan, founder of Eyesea. “The shipping industry - with our tech and our reach - can provide key support to community and government clean-up initiatives. It was great to see a proof-of-concept test work so successfully.”
Seafarers who tested the app reported that it was simple to use. The idea is that they snap a picture of the pollution and debris with the geotagging from their phone highlighting the position. As more data is compiled it will be possible to identify hazards in the ocean as well as washing up on shore that requires the attention of local authorities or can be addressed by volunteer groups.
Volunteers efforts were maximized with the datamap prepared from the Eyesea app (photo courtesy of PlasticBusters)
