This is a Zen retreat, but it's possible that a shed is being rented out as an Airbnb. There's also an additional residence on the property. Located in Ojay, CA the 1962 home has 3bds, 2ba, and asks $1,399,900 (recently dropped by $70K).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's a colorful home, decorated in Zen fashion with a fair amount of military collectibles, as well.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The kitchen is directly off the living room, which I didn't expect. It's a cute kitchen.
Tumblr media
Very nice bath looks newly remodeled.
Tumblr media
The primary bedroom.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I think that this is the 2nd bedroom, but it's housing a collection and the closet doors have been removed.
Tumblr media
The garden behind the house.
Tumblr media
The 2 sheds are also behind the house.
Tumblr media
Small patio between the sheds.
Tumblr media
They're very tiny.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Basically a bed/sitting room.
Tumblr media
It looks like one shed is used to house more of the military collection.
Tumblr media
Here's the 2nd residence.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is nice. There's a sleeping nook in the corner, with a loft on top.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's one large room with a pretty big kitchen.
Tumblr media
It's actually a large studio apt.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The bath is very nice, also, and includes a washer/dryer.
Tumblr media
The gardens are very well-maintained.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The yard is quite large and includes this lovely fountain. The lot is .24 acre.

Shannen's Native American Descent
We all know Shannen Doherty was of Irish descent through the paternal side of her family.
The Doherty / O’Doherty family is an Irish clan based in County Donegal. The O’Dohertys are named after Dochartach (c. 10th century), a member of the Cenél Conaill dynasty which in medieval Irish genealogy traced itself to Niall of the Nine Hostages. The O’Doherty clan and family name is one of the most ancient in Europe. The clan traces its pedigree through history, pre-history, and mythology to 2BC. (Source)
Tumblr media
Shannen and her dad, John Thomas Doherty, in Ireland ca. 1996/97.
Shannen was also from English and Scottish descent through her mother Rosa Elizabeth née Wright. The red-haired Southern belle also has Native American ancestry, most concretley the Chumash people (Source), and thus has Shannen (Source).
Tumblr media
Shannen and her mum spending time in nature, ca.2024.
Shannen explained that she wasn't able to be with her dad when he passed away on the 4th of November of 2010. Her best friend Chris Cortazzo told her to spend some quality time with her mother and him at his ranch in Tennesse, which is surrounded by Native American ground. When she was there suddenly the wind shaked the plants and trees and she felt her father’s arms go around her and say “It’s ok baby, I love you. I’m here" (Source) (Source).
Her mother Rosa said that one of her great-great-grandmothers (she doesn't know the grade) was forced to move in the called "Trail of Tears", the forced displacement of approximately 60,000 people of the "Five Civilized Tribes" [Cherokee, Chickasaw, Choctaw, Muscogee (Creek), and Seminoles] between 1830 and 1850, and the additional thousands of Native Americans within that were ethnically cleansed by the United States government (Wiki). Furthermore, she said her ancestor was from the Chumash people and was forced to move from Mississipi to Oklahoma (Source).
Rosa also said about Shannen's Native American's heritage:
"The whole Indian heritage to Shannen was very, very important ... Shannen swore when she bought this property [a ranch in Malibu to live with her mum, her friends, and to do a shelter for horses]… she says, I just feel it. She says, I know that this is where I'm supposed to be. And she just felt that whole Indian."
Also she was proud of having directed "Charmed"'s episode "The Good, The Bad and The Cursed" that features a storyline involving American's First Nations people's and Native actors Kimberly Guerrero (from Colville and Salish-Kootenai native peoples from Alaska) and Michael Greyeyes (Nêhiyaw (Plains Cree) from Muskeg Lake Cree Nation in Saskatchewan, Canada).

The Chumash are a Native American people of the central and southern coastal regions of California (Wiki), in portions of what is now Kern, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, Ventura and Los Angeles counties, extending from Morro Bay in the north to Malibu in the south to Mt Pinos in the east. Their territory includes three of the Channel Islands: Santa Cruz, Santa Rosa, and San Miguel; the smaller island of Anacapa was likely inhabited seasonally due to the lack of a consistent water source.
Modern place names with Chumash origins include Malibu, Nipomo, Lompoc, Ojai, Pismo Beach, Point Mugu, Port Hueneme, Piru, Lake Castaic, Saticoy, Simi Valley and Somis. Archaeological research demonstrates that the Chumash people have deep roots in the Santa Barbara Channel area and lived along the southern California coast for millennia.
The Chumash lived in over 150 independent villages, speaking variations of the same language. Much of their culture consisted of basketry, bead manufacturing and trading, cuisine of local abalone and clam, herbalism which consisted of using local herbs to produce teas and medical reliefs, rock art, and the scorpion tree. The scorpion tree was significant to the Chumash as shown in its arborglyph: a carving depicting a six-legged creature with a headdress including a crown and two spheres. The shamans participated in the carving which was used in observations of the stars and in part of the Chumash calendar. The Chumash resided between the Santa Ynez Mountains and the California coasts where a bounty of resources could be found. The tribe lived in an area of three environments: the interior, the coast, and the Northern Channel Islands. Some researchers believe that the Chumash may have been visited by Polynesians between AD 400 and 800, nearly 1,000 years before Christopher Columbus reached the Americas.
Tumblr media
Chumash Family by American sculptor George S. Stuart
The maritime explorer Juan Cabrillo was the first European to make contact with the coastal Alta Californian tribes in the year 1542. Spain claimed what is now California from that time forward, but did not return to settle until 1769, when the first Spanish soldiers and missionaries arrived with the double purpose of Christianizing the Native Americans and facilitating Spanish colonization. The Chumash people moved from their villages to the Franciscan missions between 1772 and 1817.
Mexico seized control of the missions in 1834. Tribespeople either fled into the interior, attempted farming for themselves and were driven off the land, or were enslaved by the new administrators. After 1849 most Chumash land was lost due to theft by Americans and a declining population, due to the effects of violence and disease. The remaining Chumash began to lose their cohesive identity. In 1855, a small piece of land (120 acres) was set aside for just over 100 remaining Chumash Indians near Santa Ynez mission. This land ultimately became the only Chumash reservation, although Chumash individuals and families also continued to live throughout their former territory in southern California.
No native Chumash speak their own language since Mary Yee, the last Barbareño speaker, died in 1965. Today, the Chumash are estimated to have a population of 5,000 members.

Map of the Trail of Tears
Chumash worldview is centered on the belief "that considers all things to be, in varying measure, alive, intelligent, dangerous, and sacred." "They assume that the universe with its three, or in some versions five, layers has always been here."
Human beings occupy the Middle Region, which rests upon two giant snakes. Chronological time is unimportant, though the past is divided into two sections: the universal flood that caused the First People to become the natural world and, thereafter the creation of human beings, the arrival of the Europeans, and the devastating consequences that followed."
The middle region (sometimes referred to as 'antap), where humans and spirits of this world live and where shamans could travel in vision quests, is interconnected with the lower world (C'oyinahsup) through the springs and marsh areas and is connected to the upper world through the mountains. In the lower world live snakes, frogs, salamanders. The world trembles or has earthquakes when the snakes which support the world writhe.
Water creatures are also in contact with the powers of the lower world and "were often depicted in rock art perhaps to bring more water to the Chumash or to appease underworld spirits' at times of hunger or disease." Itiashap is the home of the First People. Alapay is the upper world in Chumash cosmology where the "sky people" lived, who play an important role in the health of the people. Principle figures of the sky world include the Sun, the Moon, Lizard, Sky Coyote, and Eagle. The Sun is the source of life and is also "a source of disease and death." The Sky Coyote, also known as the Great Coyote of the Sky or Shnilemun, is considered to be a protector and according to Inseño Chumash lore, “looks out for the welfare of all in the world below him”. During the creation of mankind, the Sky Coyote was present among the other important cosmological figures. The Eagle, also known as Slo’w, is the force that maintains momentum and order among the other stars so that they do not fall down on and destroy earth.

Chumash pictographs.
The Chumash cosmology is also centered around astronomy. Rock art and arborglyphs that have been found within Chumash sites are thought to have depicted Polaris (the North Star) and Ursa Major (the Big Dipper). These two astrological entities were paramount to the Chumash belief system as well as their perception of time. It is believed that the Chumash used these constellations to determine what time of the year it was depending on the position of Ursa Major around Polaris.

I love that Shannen showed her respect to her ancestry in some "Charmed" episodes, like in 2x10 "Heartbreak City" (click to see if bigger):

Charmed 3x01 "The Honeymoon is Over" (click to see bigger):
Tumblr media
And the already mentioned 3x14 "The Good, The Bad and The Cursed" (click to see bigger). Her love for horses also comes from that connection:

Remember when I used to do events? Me neither.
BUT I'M DOING ONE NOW!
I'll be at Bart's Books in Ojai, CA next Thursday, March 21st at 6pm to interview my genius bike-touring, adventure-having, genre-bending cartoonist friend Tessa Hulls about her new graphic memoir Feeding Ghosts. The book explores three generations of her family's tumultuous history from Maoist China to America and beyond. It's rich and cathartic and unbelievably gorgeous. Tessa's spent the last nine years bringing it to life. You can read more about it in the San Francisco Chronicle or the New York Times.
Tumblr media
Given the lengthy isolation and emotional toll required to craft a book like this, I'm very keen to have a packed house to help celebrate its emergence into the world. If you've never been, Bart's has a gorgeous outdoor courtyard and an absolutely amazing selection of used titles. Well worth the visit.
Tumblr media
If you're not in Southern California and still want to get your hands on the book, you can do that! It's out! Order from Bookshop.org or request it at your local library.

Raïna interview at VoyageLA page.
Tumblr media
[Raïna and her horse Quincy]
Dr. Raïna Manuel-Paris has a multicultural background, born of a French father and a Dominican mother. She was raised in France and England until her early 20’s then moved to the US. Fairy tales and Legends were her refuges. They helped her understand the difficulties of her childhood. By the age of twelve, she had read most of the myths and legends of the world. From Ireland and Russia to Arabia. She holds a Ph.D. in Mythological Studies with emphasis in Depth Psychology from PGI.
She also holds a Masters Degree in Film from Columbia U. She taught Magic and Ritual and Myth and Symbol for 15 years at the Art Institute in Santa Monica, where she also offered guided meditations and somatic energy work. Her own spiritual seeking and evolution has taken her from Bali to the sacred shores of Lake Atitlan in the Guatemalan Highlands of the Sierra Madre… She is also adjunct faculty at PGI where she taught a course in Archetypal Patterns in Cinema. She assisted Dr. Lionel Corbett during his Psyche and the Sacred workshop with its ritual aspect. She has also taught at the Relativity School in Downtown LA. She is a published author of non-fiction and scholarly articles: Trauma War and Spiritual Transformation, Journal of Jungian Thought, 2017; The Mother- to-be Dream Book. Warner Books, 2002.) She is also a poet and published one book of poetry with Raven Books as well as several poems in various publications. Her documentary the Bridges of My Father was selected for the short film corner at the Cannes Film Festival in 2009.
Tumblr media
[Raïna's husky mix Numen]
Currently, Raïna splits her time between Los Angeles and Ojai, CA. She works with individuals in a process she calls “The Cradle and the Crown,” assisting men and women in coming to alignment body mind and soul, developing deep aliveness as well as careful listening to the whisperings of their soul’s desire. She also uses the Tarot and other oracle tools to help her clients. She is a speaker /lecturer at the Joseph Campbell roundtable on the Tarot: the 22 universal patterns of transformation and on Love: Primal Agent of Change as well as the Myth Salon in LA. She has given numerous lectures at the Philosophical Research Society and taught workshops based on the Cradle and The Crown process. She practices Natural Horsemanship, with her horse Quincy, and also spends time exploring the Ojai valley with her husky mix, Numen. She also plays the ancient frame drum and sings. She is working to complete a novel with archetypal motifs. She also wrote a play with writing partner Susan Kacvinsky: “Seeking Sophia” which had a staged reading in Los Angeles in 2014.
Her work with students, including many veterans, always emphasizes the ways in which one reconnects the Soul of the World, Anima Mundi, with Corpus Mundi, the body of the world, and how to hold the tension between the inner world and the outer world in a way that engages curiosity and compassion. She worked on an online course “Awakening the Magician Within” as well as on her lecture “What Women Want”. Probably the one thing that has been at the core of her life is the understanding that we are all spiritual beings, whether we know it or not, magical beings with a desire for healing and love. And that archetypal stories, and the ancient mysteries of nature, provide a helpful direction towards an authentic relationship with the Self. Having a life with ritual and contemplation is very helpful as well. Soul, she believes, needs Mystery more than Meaning in order to feel the joy of its divinity.
Tumblr media
[Raïna Paris]
Has it been a smooth road? A life is not a smooth ride, ever, if you want to actually live. What I learned as a child was so filled with confusion and misunderstanding, judgment, and rage, I became fear-based and so mixed up inside I had to learn to untangle all the different strands of my life and identify them, like the four impossible tasks given to Psyche, There has been many losses and deep grief along the way as well as health challenges. But always the deepest learning comes from all those challenges as well as the wisdom of the body, Re-learning to listen to the instincts and the intuition, trusting the inner guidance which has always been there but that took time to relearn to trust. I had to learn how to live from a place of inner authority as opposed to outer expectations. The mystical tools, like the Tarot, and the wisdom teachings of the ages, have always been beautiful signposts along the way.
We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know? I am not someone who likes to teach or talk about something for the sake of talking. I need to come from love in whatever I do. Specially because I was so fear-based, And I also need to know what I am talking about, what I am trying to convey, not only intellectually but in the body and in the heart. I am a scholar, a guide and a poet. And I do not ever talk about a subject however scholarly without implicating myself on a personal level. It’s not something I decided to do, it’s just how I am. I am always trying to live a life that is absolutely personal and authentic to me and at the same time, share my experience with others in the hopes that it might be helpful or useful.
So I go into the places of the In-Between, of liminality. It is the place of dreams, of imagination, and it is also the world of Nature, where the truth lives, at the threshold between this world and the archetypal world, I work with the tarot from an archetypal viewpoint because it is an ancient wisdom tool and I believe it helps give perspective to this crazy road trip called life, which often seems to spiral back to the same places we have experienced before. I also teach a seminar about the Cradle and the Crown process which helps people connect with the power and passion of childhood joy as well as the wisdom of inner authority. Once the weeds of false beliefs get rooted out, I find there is a beautiful way to live in tune with the Self and the world around us.
Tumblr media
[Another photo of Raïna and her horse Quincy]
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least? I love that the city is surrounded by Nature, so close by, from parks and mountains to ocean.
It is a challenging place with just as many opportunities to heal and transform, as there are opportunities to lose oneself.

walking through the picturesque streets of cardinal hill, you find ( forest "ori" james ), the ( 26 ) year old ( dance teacher ) originally from ( ojai, CA ). living alongside them in such a small town, you know that they're ( optimistic ) and ( impulsive ), but what you might not know is that they are a ( witch ), and that they’re hiding something…
quick facts
name: forest james nickname: ori age: 26 gender: nonbinary, masc-presenting sexuality: disaster bi occupation: dance teacher height: 5'5" weight: 132 pounds hair: brown, wavy/curly, lets it grow down past his ears or to his shoulders sometimes and then will trim it shorter eyes: dark brown languages: english, spanish, some french and italian time in cardinal hill: 6 years +
bio
ori was born on a commune in ojai, california 26 years ago. they had two loving parents, an older sister, and as time passed they came to have three more siblings. ori also viewed the other children and adults in their community to be his family; they picked up on "what's mine is yours" from a very young age. everything was shared, they helped wherever they could, and it was a fairly serene upbringing.
the commune didn't really inhibit children by gender stereotypes or norms, so it was easy and almost natural for ori to eventually label themself as genderfluid, or nonbinary. they felt they could skim the entire spectrum on the gender binary on any given day, and this was accepted and honored by most people around them.
from day one, ori was an artistic child. they preferred to spend time along painting, or creating in some way, rather than doing the physical labor out in the fields. they still did the work that was asked of them, but when the artsier jobs were offered to them, ori thrived.
their parents often said that ori danced before they could walk. waving little baby arms around, and moving their body whenever there was music playing. when ori was three, he was able to go to a studio outside of the commune and take lessons. by the time they were eight, they were competing regularly, and winning often. the competitive spirit was difficult for them to get into, but they quickly found they could be their normally helpful and cheerful self, and still win a competition here or there.
despite being an easygoing and artistic child, as ori got older they started to show signs of an obsessive side to them. around competition or performance time, he would forget to eat or sleep, too focused on practicing. when they found something in their homeschooling that interested them, they would stay up all night buried in books they'd found on the subject, able to recite passages over breakfast the next morning. ori became a bit of a perfectionist, to an extent that was oftentimes unhealthy, and nobody seemed to know how to help him through it when it got bad. they just waited for the cycle to end, for ori to burn themself out and be forced to take a breather.
when ori was seventeen, they left home. the circumstances surrounding his departure were unclear at best, and seemed to be very sudden. they said they just felt a bit of wanderlust, like they needed to see the world.
they spent about a year hitchhiking across the country. most of the time they traveled between similar communes that they’d communicated with over the years or had heard about. it was work that they knew and people they understood. when they were on their own in other places they offered dance workshops in bigger cities to make a bit of cash.
ori believes that ending up in cardinal hill was fate. the day they got there they felt in their heart and soul that they needed to stay, and they wrote home about it. they'd been on their way back home, but "home" quickly became cardinal hill. they got a job at a local dance studio, teaching children's classes mostly, and found a place to live that was well-suited for ori's needs.
it was easy for ori to offer space for their brother, when it seemed like ocean needed to get out of ojai too.
personality:
forest is very much a product of the environment they were raised in. they believe in cooperation with their colleagues and loving everyone around you. they’re very open about their feelings and they encourage others to be open as well.
it’s all positive vibes and happiness. it takes quite a bit to bring ori down because they take pretty much everything in stride and they can find the good in most situations. they also believe that everything happens for a reason and there isn’t much to be down about because of that.
the universe has a plan!
ori will make friends with anyone and will consider anyone a friend. if they have so much as smiled at someone (and they smile at everyone), then that person is now invited on ori’s next outing.
despite being all love and rainbows, they can often get snarky and sarcastic if they believe the moment calls for it. this clash in demeanor can get confusing to the people around forest.
they understand sarcasm but they don’t understand lying. what’s the point?
their way of dressing and presenting themself is similar to their happy-go-lucky attitude. all bright colors and sparkles and standing out in a crowd. they are loud in appearance even if they can stay softspoken in a crowd.
forest is still artistic and spends a lot of their free time dancing or painting. they love to paint in nature so it’s not uncommon to find them outside in the park with their easel set up with a good view!
