Tim Fanfic Recs

Okay, take two of writing this (since I accidentally closed the flipping tab when I had nearly finished my response for the ask which grrrr sorry anon). So, Tim fics. I am picky about Tim fics for lots of reasons that I don’t have the time nor the energy to get into but honestly what kind of Tim stan am I anyway here are my favourite Tim stories for each of my fave bat-centric characters:

Tim and Damian

To Make Me Better Than The Divine by elysean

Family is like a broken bone: if the parts don’t align, then they won’t heal right. Tim Drake, and a healing process long overdue.

Tim and Damian relationship fics that don’t demonise or woobify one or the other? In my fandom? Okay but seriously Elysean’s fics are so well thought out and so well written. It’s very internally focused and slow but in a really good involving way. Set after Tim’s return from inter-dimensional space prison, he recovers a bit more than he was allowed in canon, and he and Damian cover things like Dami picking up the TT to honour Tim. Sweet, soft, gentle. Like Tim!

Tim and Bruce

birds all sing (as if they knew) by Anonymous

"How do you spell 'engagement'?" "Who are you texting?" "Tim."

I know I know I plug this fic enough and I’m sure there are tons of delicious angsty fics about these two and like it may only update once a year but what updates they are every sentence every piece of dialogue every thought just shows how incredibly weird these two are and this fic is hilarious. Laugh out loud anarchical hilarity. Bruce feels Tim is pulling away and tugs him back, Tim doesn’t understand and pulls back, leading to the most over the top No don’t go I’ll have empty nest syndrome father son relationship. Selina and Stephanie sitting in the background watching their loved ones have public freakouts like oh boy... I chose that one for some reason. I cannot wait for the final confrontation. This fic manages to be heartfelt and hilarious all at once.

Tim and Cassandra

There needs to be more fics about their relationship which doesn’t just revolve around Cassandra being a sounding board for Tim to angst at. But uh, here are my favourite two.

Disclosure by Runespoor

"Did you try to clone her too?" Cass confronts Tim with a question that's more like a demand. Emotional honesty ensues.

Set between Steph’s death and Cass’ drugging to villainy. A badly written time for everyone involved, but this fic does such a good job at pulling very ugly raw feelings of grief to the surface. Cassandra lost her best friend, Tim lost his girlfriend. They both were presented with resources to bring her back. Neither took it.

Seen and Unseen by Molly_Hats

In which the separation between Tim and his second family is metaphorical, and Cassandra helps narrow the gap.

Set in the early days of Tim as Robin and Cass as Batgirl when they weren’t quite sure of each other yet. I love this fic because Tim - like me - is face blind. Anyway, this story is sweet and lovely and these two have such an open relationship with each other it makes for really nice reads when it’s focused on.

Tim and Dick

Things That Don't Kill Us by PolsVoice

After the events of Batman #71, Tim finds himself in Bludhaven looking for someone that he used to know.

Having Tim be a presence during the current amnesia arc would have been great but hey this is what good fanfic is for. These two need more in depth fics that doesn’t revolve around that one time Dick hurt Tim’s feelings in Red Robin so this fic, addressing the lack of meaningful interaction between these since 2011, addressing the horrendous too long amnesia arc, addressing the bizarre use of Tim during the recent Batman run... this is a very, very, very well written fic.

Shut Eye by audreycritter

It's easy to look at Tim Drake and think that his fistful of issues-- anxiety, insomnia, a worrisome coffee habit-- are the result of his tenure as Robin. But what if they predated that? ...Janet Drake is trying but he's never been an easy kid, exactly. And she'd be the first to tell you that it's not Tim's fault, but that doesn't really change much.

I mean this one is obvious but still. Janet trying so hard to be a good mother but she just can’t understand her own son not that she’s scared of him she’s just scared for him and she tries more than Jack ever did but she misjudges and loses her temper sometimes and... anyway, this is an excellent fic with a gut punch ending (no prizes for guessing how Janet’s story ends)

He tied a purple ribbon around a brick and left it on her windowsill with a note that said: Want to catch a movie on Friday? - Alvin.

Stephanie being a guiding beacon of light? Stephanie being acknowledged in her growth as a hero and character? Call backs to cute moments in the Dixon and Lewis runs? Tim growing past his pain and learning to reconnect with people? Oh god, so good. So good. More. Mm.

The twinkly-eyed actor talks to Benji Wilson about his new role in hit drama Last Tango in Halifax, as well as his previous career as a circus clown

It was Peter O’Toole who once suggested that we “should pity the pretty”. The actor perhaps felt that his looks had hindered his career. Rupert Graves, however, disagrees. “I think that’s nonsense. I think if you’re good-looking you get more advantages.”

It’s not said with any self-regard – Graves has none. Luckily for him at 51 he is still pretty, as countless fan sites attest. When I meet him his hair has been dyed black from its usual grey. He assures me it’s for a role and that he will be “undying” it the minute that role is finished. He is not bothered about ageing.

“I’m just reaching middle age. I’m getting older - that’s what happens. I’m actually quite pragmatic about it.”

The grey stays too for his new role in Last Tango in Halifax, playing a date for Nicola Walker’s Gillian called Gary, who in an early reveal turns out to be Derek Jacobi’s unknown son. Graves is plainly delighted to be joining not only an established hit but one written by Happy Valley’s Sally Wainwright, whom he calls “our greatest television writer”.

“She’s a proper bona fide genius. She is theatrical and absolutely human and true and has a very strong individual voice. It’s her warmth I like really – the latitude she gives to human error. All the characters are beautifully flawed, but also she’s properly funny.”

With his deep dark eyes and winning grin Graves is recognisably the same boy who caught the world’s eye in Merchant Ivory’s 1985 A Room with a View – including the famous scene in which he and Simon Callow dispensed with their clothes and cavorted naked in a pool.

“I remember I had to come in and say, ‘Anybody want to bathe?’ and I thought, ‘Oh no, that sounds so poncey and stupid. If you see the scene again I’m actually blushing but that’s not acting: that’s because I was frightened.”

Because he shot to very early fame in two Merchant Ivory films, A Room with a View and Maurice, it is tempting to assume that he must be posh totty. That he must have gone to Eton and Oxbridge, then Rada with perhaps a stint at the RSC before Merchant Ivory gave him his break.

But Graves is nothing like that and he never has been.

“Do you know Weston Super Mare?” he asks me. “It’s a s***hole. Bill Bryson said it was the worst place he’d ever been.” Rupert Graves grew up in Weston Super Mare.

“I like it because it’s such a s***hole. I like the West Country humour and slyness. I went to a shocking school. I didn’t have any kind of career path – I wasn’t going to be a professional. There was no chance of me getting into university or anything, my childhood wasn’t like that.”

It was an upbringing that gave him what he calls a certain recklessness. At 16 he left school to join the circus. It sounds like something from a penny romance but Graves really was a performing clown.

“It seemed like something I wanted to do so I did it. The circus was run by a Mr Thompson whose first name I never found out. They lost Rudy the Clown and Mr Thompson thought, ‘I don’t have to pay, I can do it through the YTS,’ so he got the government to sponsor a trainee clown which was me. I wanted to be an actor by then anyway. I kind of thought it might be a good thing.”

Thinking something might be a good thing and therefore doing it is an anti-method that has seen him through an entire career. He was a punk at 14 (“I had ripped jeans and a shirt with probably a bit of writing on it and choppy hair and a little bit of pink in there somewhere.”) He worked at Butlins, got an agent from the back of The Stage, was cast in Dennis Potter’s Sufficient Carbohydrate at Hampstead, that went to the West End from where he was spotted and cast in A Room with a View, aged 21. All of a sudden the punkish clown from Weston Super Mare was a star.

“Obviously the good part was that it gave me a profile. But I certainly didn’t take advantage of that profile - I was slightly embarrassed, probably, about the attention. And I felt I hadn’t earned it, I hadn’t earned the acting jobs, I hadn’t trained and I felt very insecure about all that.”

Graves retreated to the theatre to learn his craft, and when he came back to the screen it was TV and indie movies rather than big-budget feature films that became his natural berth. Gradually, via The Forsyte Saga, Scott & Bailey, The White Queen and Sherlock (he plays DI Lestrade) he has worked his way to something of a mid-career renaissance.

Not that he would even recognise the notion of a career trajectory.

“If I need cash I’ll do anything, I don’t really care. That’s how I earn money and I have my family [five children between the ages of four and 11] and I don’t have anything else.”

Of all the many, many jobs he takes to earn that money (on top of Last Tango he is filming three small films and an American TV mini-series, all for release in 2015) – it is Sherlock that has become the most high profile.

What’s struck him most about playing Lestrade in Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss’s hit reworking is that it brings with it a new type of recognition.

“Sherlock is the first thing I’ve been in where its fandom is fuelled by Twitter and social media. That has made a huge difference – people can talk to actors and each other directly, they can whip themselves into an absolute fury. It’s bizarre. The strength of it has surprised me.”

He has even found himself exposed to a particularly modern malaise.

“I’ve got somebody who is pretending to be me on Twitter, talking to friends of mine and insulting them – and then showing pictures of children’s legs saying, ‘this is my child sleeping.’ So I went on Twitter and said that’s not me. I did that for a couple of weeks but then it struck me that it’s such a narcissistic thing for an actor to do. I’m not that sort of person.”

That is not very nice. On the other hand, the kind of exposure that Sherlock and now Last Tango will bring – both shows have a large American following - has set Graves up for castings in the US, that place where under-valued British actors go to pay off over-sized British mortgages. He is ambivalent at the prospect at best.

“I tell you what, I really don’t like LA. Every time we do LA I’ve felt depressed. For someone who’s not a very strategic person it’s an extremely strategic industry town. But I have to do it and I’m tempted to go over next year just for a month, have a little sniff and see if I can get something.”

You could easily see Graves doing a Hugh Laurie or a Damian Lewis, turning up as a grizzled American cop or doc and suddenly becoming the global star he was all set to be when he was 21. Equally, you could envisage him continuing to pop up in all manner of British productions, turning in quietly engaging performances and then moving on, twinkly-eyed, to the next one. Either would be worth watching.

“The Good Soldier”: almost undoubtedly a reference to a novel about a love triangle between a woman and two soldiers

“Achilles Heel”: Saul’s Achilles heel is that he always answers when work calls, Tom Walker’s is that he loves his wife and kids… Carrie’s is literally every aspect of her existence

“From A to B and Back Again”: possibly a reference to the circular nature of the episode? They go from thinking they’ve got Haqqani to being back at square one by episode’s end

“Redux”: Carrie hallucinates Brody

“Halfway to a Donut”: Duck says this about some pastry. Like 4.06, they think they’ve got Saul and end up back to zero (donut)

“There’s Something Else Going On”: well there was!!

“13 Hours in Islamabad”: reference to the Benghazi attacks, which the episode basically lifts from directly and which also lasted ~13 hours

“Krieg Nicht Lieb”: Carrie meets a German spy woman! This means “war not love” (not perfectly translated), so an ironic take on “love not war”

“Long Time Coming”: Carrie and Quinn finally have sex!!!!!!! (just seeing if anyone is still reading this)

Season five:

“Separation Anxiety”: I think this a meta reference to the time jump and also to Carrie’s anxieties about being out of the CIA but back in that world

“The Tradition of Hospitality”: I believe this is a reference to Carrie + Otto being guests at the UN refugee camp and how… un-hospitably that trip ends

“Super Powers”: Carrie believes she has super powers when she’s off her meds

“Why Is This Night Different”: these words at said at Passover seder, which starts out the episode

“Better Call Saul”: horrifically embarrassing title that is a reference to Carrie calling Saul as well as the Breaking Bad spinoff starring Bob Odenkirk

“Parabiosis”: I honestly don’t know. It’s a scientific term and I haven’t rewatched those middle season five episodes since they aired and also don’t care to!

“Oriole”: this was Carrie’s code name with one of her assets in Iraq

“All About Allison”: this episode centers on our Lord and Savior Allison Carr, Queen of Online Handbag Shopping!

“The Litvinov Ruse”: I think this describes the trick they played on Allison thinking she was blown when she wasn’t

“New Normal”: some military or CIA person says this about ISIS or Russia and Quinn being gassed

“Our Man in Damascus”: this is the title of a book about a man who infiltrates a foreign government at the highest levels so I’m pretty sure it’s a reference to Allison

“A False Glimmer”: lifted straight from Quinn’s letter!

Season six:

“Fair Game”: was surely sad by Keane or Dar or Saul or someone else about something (sorry, haven’t rewatched these episodes either)

“The Man in the Basement”: it’s where Quinn threw that mug at Carrie

Ew Kitty au (A plan)

N/A: Still going to the arc, now, Talia and Damian are having a meeting with their dad about their last mission and the cat is out of the cradle.

Kurt Wagner is not an easily approachable man, unless, you´re one of his kids, then it´s easy to spot and talk with the elusive necromancer and today Talia and Damian want to explain their latest mission, Kurt is all about rare animals(used to exploit them in the past, but, for reason Kurt won´t disclose…he is an advocated for protection on animals)

“A vaporhags? The name is dumb but those are rare animals” Kurt pipes in drinking his beer with his bread and Damian, who is taking German classes is amused as to how Germans love bread. Kurt as if reading his son´s thought add. “Don´t laugh at bread” and Damian raises his hands in defeat as the smile continues.

“Yeah, if it wasn´t for the druid we would end up doing something stupid” Talia explained elegantly but is hard to keep the face when your brother is giving proves to be a herculean effort. “Right, the druid, uhm hum” Damian gives a big grin and Talia is giving a warning look to her brother(a secret oath was made among them to never reveal anything remotely linked with their love lives to Kurt or he´ll be over the moon) “Dad, she meets a druid, a cute and handsome druid named Charlie and she knows him” Damian snitch Talia up and now Kurt is looking at his daughter in joy.

Talia wants to deny, but, his father´s eyes are a way to glue on the story on herself and she can´t lie to him now. “Fine, his name is Charlie Pryde” and Talia remember the other secret and now knows she needs to come clean. “Yes, he´s the son of Kitty Pryde, mom knows Kitty for a while and she asked me to never tell you about her…her son, Charlie used to visit the palace, we´re not friends when kids…come to think of, we weren´t enemies either, too different and I liked to play with dolls and he liked to play with geckos” Talia explained and Kurt is not amused at all.

“Wanda hide Kitty from me?” Kurt asked completely bemused and Talia tries to damage control the situation.

“I guess, she was hoping to avoid two necromancers fighting each other, you´re very against any necromancer” Talia spoke in a calm voice.

“No, I´m against fakes necromancers, and nice try Talia” there´s a hint of pride in his eyes “you´re good with words, but, I know your mother hates me enough to prevent me to know Kitty” Kurt spokes and Damian, not sired by Wanda, wonders why, among all the women he sleeps, Wanda hates him so much(he thought the worse, but, Talia and the others assured it was consensual) “Your mother detests me, uses me as an excuse to justify the lack of her own sexuality, sometimes she likes women, sometimes men, sometimes both, sometimes neither and blames me for not be able to know herself” Kurt has a malice tone now “ is not my fault if she´s that indecisive about herself, and I´d not like she hide Kitty for so long from me”

Kurt does not have a friendly look and Talia remembers the last time she saw her father with such expression, so, to avoid anything bad, the woman pipes in “I think Charlie grows up nicely, the puberty was very kindly with him…stop from being the odd kind playing with geckos to be a handsome man” Talia is blushing and knows, deep down, that no daughter should have to confess such a thing to her father, yet, Kurt is an evil wizard.

“Wait, you really think he´s handsome?” Kurt is now in a good mood” the last time you said someone was handsome…oh, it was your ex, he never deserved you, Talia” the last part was spoken with care and Talia smiles, and soon drop the smile as Kurt asked for more details. “Dad, just because I think he´s handsome does not mean I´ll sleep with him, you can find someone pretty and not want to sleep with him”

“Really?” Kurt asked and Talia knows he may be joking, yet, Damian is not so sure and is not caring at this point, after all, is not like their father will ever change.

In the gothic house, Kitty Pryde is pacing back and forth as she´s thinking on her next move, Jia, Magik and Charlie are giving opinions as the dilemma is present to the Lady Necromancer.

“So, just to sum up” Jia speaks earning people´s attention “ One of Magda´s servants take the third baby, and only the third baby, away from Magneto, ok, why only the third one?”

“Good question, why only one baby?” Charlie asked and should be impossible someone looking at the baby, a newborn, and already know he won´t mix well with the family. “Is there any spell that indicates if Magneto´s the father? Wait, if exist why to take one baby?”

Magik pipes in. “Princess Wanda mentioned how she and Pietro are similar to Magda´s parents, as for the third baby…look, good question, how and where´s the doctor?” Magik read a few police romance novels and is asking the obvious questions, after all, Magda wasn´t alone in her birth.

“Well, the man, Dr Lewis, knew about the affair, and swear to not reveal the third baby, the child was never divulgated, in fact, Magda never thought she would birth 3 babies, her original plan was to save the girl and let the boy be raised in a different place as the boy will take after …Logan” Jia and Magik make a gross sound and Charlie rolls his eyes and soon Kitty continues “I bring the soul of the good doctor and he told me the secrecy of the birth requires a glamour and a good lie” Jia and Magik can´t understand why a woman would do such thing, Charlie, for once, is getting their point, why not run away from Magneto? “Charlie, your thoughts are being too louder, she couldn´t run…he wouldn´t let her”

“Anyway, the cheating was discovery as soon Wanda and Pietro and this…Jimmy was born, ironically, it was the good doctor that break the lie, one day, Magneto makes a question about Magda´s health and Lewis didn´t understand the question and Magneto jump to cheating conclusion…and he´s correct” Kitty sum up the fact. “Lewis told many secrets about the king and the Queen,” a smile reaches her face and everyone present knows she will use this as blackmail against Magneto. “Anyway, the doctor told me this woman named Bertha, take the baby to Latveria and that´s the problem”

“Doom is one of your enemies?” Magik asked and Kitty shakes her head.

“I can´t bargain in and demand all men called Jimmy to do a DNA test…well, I could, but, I rather not cause a big commotion” she is bitting her nail for a moment. “And Wanda did pay me to find the missing brother, if people know about his little detail, a civil war may arise”

“Is a complex situation, maybe, you could go with someone that Doom is familiar with, in fact, someone he would consider an ally…this could help” Charlie suggests.

“Uhm, yes, you´re right. In fact, I know who I´ll call” and Jia and Magik are disappointed once knowing Kitty won´t take the girls and much less Charlie “No buts, Charlie you´ll stay here and look after them, ok?”

Charlie nods and as the girls pout he explained. “ Doom is too dangerous and is not above attacking children, also, you two need to continue to study and no, you two won´t be left alone here, what kind of adult would let students be alone and without protection?” Magik and Jia saw his pout. And, Charlie in a good mood, mess with their hair.

“Charlie, can you teach her how to identify and fight against mental invasions?” Kitty is taking a few books in her infinite purse and the man nods. And Jia and Magik are more enthusiastic with this decision.

Kurt was sleeping soundly when his mirror vibrated, and it jolted Kurt out of his back and it was Kitty, again, not a sex mirror/talk, but, she has good news. “elf, do you still want to work on a project with me? Well, what do you think of a mission?”

Kurt´s mood gets much better now. “I´m listening.”

“I need help to enter in Doom´s country and you, as far I know, is a wizard he respects dearly, so, he will listen to you” Kitty explained the situation and Kurt smiles widely. Tonight is proving to be good after all.

Favorite Character Tag!!! (*Mostly A Rave About Perseus Jackson And How TLT Changed My Life as a Depressed ADHD Kid Because I Have Real Deep Emotional Connections To Him*)

Thank you so much to @the-alexandrian-alchemist for tagging me! Rules: Tag ten favorite characters, each from ten different fandoms, in no particular order

Percy Jackson and The Olympians: Percy! FRICKIN! Jackson! Okay, I know he’s the main character, but like, hear me out. Boy loves his mama, respects women, loves his best friend, stands up to bullies, wants to do his best, and was super relatable for me as a kid. Like relatable to the point of just being my constant mood. Here’s the thing, guys, Percy Jackson in TLT was just me but as a boy. He felt like a disappointment, like a failure, and wanted to prove to the world that he wasn’t a bad kid, that he wasn’t a trouble maker. He was an ADHD wreck and didn’t mean to be. He felt bad because he caused chaos wherever he went. He felt hopeless and frustrated because he couldn’t make his learning disability go away and it ruined things for him. He sucked at school, he couldn’t keep a filter on himself, he was impulsive and headstrong and teachers hated him for it. He was everything I was. Everything I hated about myself he hated about himself too. As small ADHD kid, who had always felt like my ADHD was my fault, meeting Percy was like a blow to the head and the heart. Suddenly there was someone, a hero, with all the same problems as me. Someone who was just like me, and also important. Chosen. Special. A hero. I had never read about another kid with ADHD. I didn’t think there was anyone out there who cared. I thought that there was hardly anyone with ADHD and because of that no one would ever understand. But Percy understood. Percy knew how I felt. I remember reading, for the first time, the part where he said he had ADHD. I read it over and over and then I cried and grabbed the book and showed it to my dad because “Daddy, look, he’s just like me!” My Dad is a Christian, against pagan things, but the man let me have my Greek Mythology filled Percy Jackson because this character made me feel special. Gave me hope. Made me smile. Made me believe in myself. I had never felt like I could be anything special because of my disorders. I had always been convinced I would amount to nothing. That I was hopeless because I would never focus, never pay attention, never keep a lid on it, never just control myself. I was convinced I was a lost cause. And Percy was too. But he became a hero. He showed me that my disorder was not something that was my fault. He showed me that kids with mental illnesses and learning disabilities could be powerful and strong and special. That I could be special. That I could be the main character. Percy Jackson showed me I could be a hero. And for that, I will always love him. Until the bitter end.

Wow, okay, after that, number two is Heroes of Olympus, Leo Valdez! Y’all know I love him. Ya’ll know why. If not, dm me, and I will gladly inform you about my boundless love for this flaming hot boy.

Simon Lewis from TMI! He’s just so funny and dorky and sarcastic and ugh, I love him.

Cardan from The Cruel Prince. Oh no..... I have a type. Dark haired boys with snarky personalities.

Oscar Silva from Renegades!!!!! Best boy. Smokey boy. Love him. Adore him. I would die for him. I would kill for him. He is all that is good in this world and if anyone ever hurt him, I’d have some strong words with them and possibly beat them up if I’m super mad. (I’m soft but you don’t fucking mess with people I love.)

Peter Park AKA Spiderman!!! He was my first favorite superhero and still is to this day. In Marvel at least. He’s just. . . . a mood, y’know?

Han Solo and Princess Leia. Did you know that my first fandom was Star Wars? No? NOW YOU DO! My dad got me into it when I was six. My mom still doesn’t understand.

Callum from The Dragon Prince ANISAKJHDH! Do I really have to explain? This boy straight up tried to die in his brother’s place, what more do you want?

Zera from Bring Me Their Hearts. So not a huge fandom, but this book ROCKS! I was so distressed becase I thought I’d read all the good books in my library, but then I found this one and I was like OH FUCK YEAH. Zera is a badass, emotional, wonderful girl, and she’s a snarky little shit and I would die for her. Also she’s the main character! So bonus points for having a main character who’s my favorite!

Kenneth Branagh interview: ‘Tom Hiddleston and I were always honest about Hamlet’

Kenneth Branagh has directed the theatrical event of 2017 – but there will be no encore, he says

Kenneth Branagh is bounding about on stage at RADA’s Vanbrugh Theatre in Bloomsbury, central London. As well as being one of the country’s best-known actors and a feted film director, he’s also president of the oldest, most prestigious drama school in the UK, and everything about his bearing suggests confidence and an ownership of this plush space. But at this precise point, he’s recalling the moment in 1979 when he recited a soliloquy from Hamlet – “Oh what a rogue and peasant slave am I…” – in front of the Queen and Prince Philip to mark the school’s 75th anniversary.

He gestures round the intimate auditorium, incredulous: “There was John Gielgud, Ralph Richardson, Edward Fox, John Hurt, all these people – and the Queen of England! I was about 19. Talk about learning to deal with nerves!” At the end, the Queen asked him how he managed to remember his lines. He meekly replied that he didn’t know.

In contrast to that daunting rite of passage, Tom Hiddleston – playing the Dane under Branagh’s direction in a special fundraising production at the school, where Hiddleston also trained – might be thought to have got off lightly. Yet he too has felt the heat this past month. A huge talking point, “Hiddleham” has eclipsed this year’s putative standout account of the part from Sherlock star Andrew Scott.

Hiddleston, 36, became a household name in the UK on the back of his brooding (and bottom-baring) turn on The Night Manager, and has gained an international fan base playing Loki in Marvel’s Thor series, a role Branagh cast him in when he directed the first of three Thor films in 2011. Tickets for his pop-up performance at RADA – allocated by ballot for the three-week run – have been like gold dust and there has been much wailing and teeth gnashing from those, including critics, excluded from this collector’s item event. Even the Guardian’s film critic pleaded for the production to be “beamed into Britain’s movie theatres”.

That’s not going to happen, Sir Ken affirms as the final performances loom this weekend, arguing that the 160-seater Vanbrugh “isn’t set up to do a big-screen transfer – though I embrace that idea in other venues. I am pro accessibility”. He also rules out the production having a further life. “We have been honest from the word go. No one was in an option to go to the West End – and there have been no conversations with Tom about doing it again down the line.”

Rather incredibly, neither he nor Hiddleston seems to have fully anticipated the demand. “I’m very, very surprised at the amount of attention it has got,” he confesses, suavely dressed in dark blue blazer and jeans, still boyish at 56. His leading man even worried there might be empty seats. “We thought we should do a ballot, because we knew he had fans, but Tom was very sweet about it and genuinely asked ‘Do you think we’ll sell out?’”

Branagh was the golden boy of British theatre who slightly got people’s backs up in his heyday, what with his get-ahead work ethic, the precocious age at which he penned his autobiography Beginning – just 28 – and the public relationship that played out between himself and first wife Emma Thompson, popularly referred to as Ken and Em. Has he got people’s backs up again?

“I hope not. Of course, you never want to disappoint anyone,” Branagh protests. “You have to accept a choice has been made. It was about being here, using this setting, for this purpose. We wanted to do an intimate, psychologically focused staging.”

For Hiddleston, a formidable Coriolanus at the Donmar in 2013, the challenge was to stretch himself at close quarters: “He wanted to discover an emotional depth that might have surprised people who consider him a cerebral actor.” In an interpolated opening scene, the audience sees the black clad prince of Denmark at the piano mourning his dead father in song – “He’s this raw, grieving thing,” says Branagh.

No play in the canon has fascinated Branagh more. Seeing Derek Jacobi play Hamlet as a teenager in Oxford changed his life. He got the role outright at RADA in his final year, then made his name with it in the late Eighties with his trailblazing company Renaissance, reprising it again for the RSC in the early Nineties. Then there was his adieu to the part in his star-studded 1996 film adaptation that found little favour at the box office but a lot of admirers among critics.

“That I should have pursued the play’s mysteries so assiduously continues to puzzle me,” he wrote in a foreword to the screenplay. Reflecting on his obsession now, he says: “Gielgud summed it perfectly as being about the process of living, of having to deal with the problem of losing the people you love. At my age you feel that keenly.”

Some say there’s something rotten in the state of acting; that thanks in part to the profile of public school alumni such as Hiddleston, Benedict Cumberbatch, Damian Lewis and Eddie Redmayne, it’s the toffs who get to the top. Branagh disagrees. “Tom will tell you that he was the only one in his year at RADA from a so-called posh background. Some 70 per cent of the people who come here receive financial assistance from us. No social group is excluded. The success of these actors resembles a wave but it’s not a trend. When working-class actors came to the fore in the Sixties, middle-class actors said: ‘Unless we have a regional accent and a rough diamond story, we can’t get a job’. But those are exaggerations.”

Things go in cycles, not least Branagh’s own fortunes. His Hollywood film career as both actor and director is burgeoning once more (after his critically slighted Frankenstein in 1994 he talked of having acquired “failure disease”, so pained were the glances strangers gave him).

He gave a sterling performance this summer as the visibly blanching naval commander evacuating terrified troops in Dunkirk, an opportunity for him to watch director Christopher Nolan in action. “It was remarkable seeing [Nolan] up there at the canvas, absolutely possessed by this thing, smart as a nut.”

His latest directorial project, a revamp of Agatha Christie’s Murder on the Orient Express, with a cast including Johnny Depp, Judi Dench, Derek Jacobi – and himself playing Poirot – is due for release in November. How can he improve on David Suchet’s performance? “You tip your hat to people who have played him before but it’s only the part that counts. I discovered Poirot is a surprisingly emotional character – compassionate and morally complex.”

For the moment, the “Branagh-bashing” as he himself called it in his autobiography – seems to have stopped. “My parents drummed into me not to get above myself, though that’s the sin I’ve been accused of throughout my career. I’ve had plenty of kickings, I will have plenty more but if you’re going through hell, the best thing is to keep going.”

At one point, the pressure was so intense it took all his courage to go back on stage. An actor friend of his, Jimmy Yuill, never forgot witnessing his opening night terror in 2002 at Sheffield, where Branagh was playing Richard III after a long hiatus from the theatre.

“I was in this contraption that was supposed to be realigning Richard’s spine. Jimmy told me: ‘I was coming down a corridor and heard this strange rattle and I realised it was your entire body shaking with fear’. I’m the other side of it now,” Branagh affirms, contentedly. The play is still the thing. “There are a few major Shakespearean roles circling and I hope to do more sooner rather than later.”

As for Hiddleston, fans shouldn’t feel distraught. “I’ve played Hamlet in four different productions, Derek Jacobi played it hundreds of times. And I’m sure Tom is interested in playing Benedick and Richard III. So, the public need to be assured that there will be a lot of pleasure coming our way.” Watch this space.

Chapter 8

April 13th, 2017. 4:57 PM.

As the elevator door opened, the five teenagers inside were surprised to find the hallway where they’d left their unconscious friend to be completely empty. Frustrated, Damian tightened his grip on the hilt of his sheathed katana. Raven placed a gentle hand on his back, feeling the anger in him rise.

“What were we thinking… of COURSE he was going to wake up. We just left him here in the middle of the hall like it was no big deal. Now where could he be?” Damian slammed his fist into the wall, the thud echoing through the empty corridor. “I should have known better… I should have already restrained him!”

“Damian, you’ve got to calm yourself,” Raven’s hushed voice slid into Damian’s ear as she whispered, being cautious not to alert Garfield to their presence. “Getting angry right now is only going to make things worse. Clear your mind…”

“… Find your peace. I know…” Damian shut his eyes for a moment, taking in several cleansing breaths. “I’m trying to do better.”

“I know you are,” Raven’s hand lighted onto Damian’s chest, and his heart rate immediately slowed. “Give it time, you’re already improving. But for now, we need to focus on finding Beast Boy. Tara, any luck contacting Jaime?”

“Nah, nothing yet,” Terra replied, still fiddling with her communicator. “Y'know, this would probably be easier if we just all gave each other our phone numbers.”

“Well, not all of us have phones,” Jonathan said quietly as he floated past Tara. “I still have to borrow Ms. Kori’s tablet every time I wanna call my dad.”

“Focus, Titans,” Damian growled. “The sooner we find Gar, the better. Let’s split up and start searching the Tower. Raven, you and Tara start at the foyer and work your way up. Superboy and I will go to the top and try to find Starfire. Be careful.”

“Stay safe, you two,” Raven replied, squeezing Damian’s hand. Their eyes locked for a moment before Raven and Tara took to the second elevator.

“You said your brother was on his way, right?” Jonathan asked as the elevator door closed before him and Damian. “Do you think that’ll be enough? I mean… don’t get me wrong, your brother is tough and all, but…”

“I know what you mean. And no, Grayson is definitely not enough,” Damian answered grimly. “If he were coming alone, he’d probably get himself killed. That’s why I had him bring his fiancée, and why I had him contact your father.”

“Wait, what??” Jonathan’s eyes widened at this information. “You had him call my dad!? Geez, Dame, do you really think this is that big of a deal??”

“The first time I fought one of these demons, the host body had no powers,” Damian began to explain, turning to face his teammate. “By the end of it, I had to blow up the Batwing on them to take them out. These things are dangerous… and now one has control of a metahuman capable of taking on the form of any animal he’s ever encountered. Who knows what he’ll be capable of?”

“Yeesh… I guess I hadn’t thoughta that…” Jonathan rubbed his neck nervously. “… Man, I hope Gar is gonna be alright…”

The elevator doors opened to the roof, where a figure stood in the doorway. Damian, not one to take chances, leapt into action immediately, cracking his foot into the face of the shadow before them.

Damian landed just in time to see Dick Grayson crumple to the floor.

“Agh!! Christ, Damian…!” Dick shouted, rubbing his jaw. “It’s just us!” Barbara rushed to Dick’s side, and she and Damian helped him to his feet.

“Sorry, Richard,” Robin apologized quickly as Dick stumbled finding his footing. “We’re all pretty on-edge right now, as you can imagine…” As the boy explained himself, a mighty wind blew across the rooftop, and a blur of red and blue swooped overhead, revealing a familiar red-and-blue clad man floating above the four heroes.

“DAD!!” Jon shouted as he rocketed up to meet his father in the sky. Superman quickly wrapped his arms around the boy, holding him tight. “Dad, it’s gotten crazy here!! Beast Boy turned into a werewolf, and there are demons, and we had to split up, and–”

“Jon! Jon, it’s alright now, take a deep breath! I’m right here, pal,” Clark spoke in a calm, reassuring tone as he stroked his son’s hair. “Everything’s gonna be okay, buddy. But we need you to be ready to fight. I know Garfield is your friend, but you have to be ready to give it all you got. Can ya do that?”

Jon shook his head, and looked into his father’s eyes, his brow furrowed. “Yes, sir.”

“So what’s up with you and Robin?”

Raven stopped dead in her tracks, turning to look at Tara with a very confused look.

“Tara… is now really the time to be asking this?”

“Well come on,” Markov continued, “you two are always hanging around each other, you’re always the first to make sure he’s okay, HE’s always the first to make sure YOU’re okay, and you read together. You READ together. Nobody does that!!”

“Damian and I have similar past experiences, so we just sort of… wait. What do you mean, ‘nobody does that’??”

“I mean, nobody does that. How do you do the… the pacing???”

Raven shook her head. “We literally read it together. It’s a mental thing. We read different characters, and we take turns with the narrative… I’ve done it with everyone on the team.”

Tara crossed her arms and raised an eyebrow. “Well, clearly not EVERYONE.”

Raven let out a quiet giggle. “Well, once all this is over, you and I should sit down together and–”

That moment, there came a loud crash from within the walls, and all the lights went out. The power to the whole Tower had been cut. Tara instinctively clutched tightly to Raven’s cloak in the pitch black of the corridor.

“… and we can read something together. What do you like to read?”

“Uhh…” Tara thought hard for a moment. “… I like Lewis. Like, Narnia? That guy? He’s good.”

“Oh, yeah! He’s a wonderful writer!” Raven replied excitedly. “Have you ever read The Screwtape Letters?”

“No, but I do have a copy,” Tara replied. “I’ve been meaning to check it out. But like, who even taught you to read like that?”

As if on cue, a bright flash of green broke through the black that surrounded the girls. When they turned to look to the source, they both smiled.

“Actually, I did that,” Starfire said calmly. “On Tamaran, it is customary to share your favorite tales with your children or younger comrades as such.”

“Kori!” Raven let out a sigh of relief as she walked over to her teacher’s side. “Thank Azar you’re here! I’m not sure we can handle this on our own…”

“Don’t worry, little sister,” Kori put her free hand on Raven’s shoulder and smiled. “We’re going to make sure Garfield is okay. Damian’s brother Dick is here, and even Jon’s father Superman came along. We’re gonna take care of everything.”

As Jaime walked through the Hall of Justice, he kept his eyes to the floor. Never had he been this nervous in his life; sure, it was scary facing down all those creeps that came after Raven, but this was the Justice League. THE Justice League. They’re like the superhero Hall of Fame, that’s pretty intimidating for a kid.

Victor kept his hand on Jaime’s shoulder, and guided him through the building, until they came to an elevator in the very back, which took them deep down into what appeared to be some kind of sub-level laboratory. As the two stepped out of the elevator, Jaime froze. There, standing before the enormous computer display, was the Batman.

“Hey, Bats,” Vic called, “I got somebody here who wants to talk to you. He’s got… questions.”

The constant clicking of keys on the keyboard stopped, and the imposing figure turned to face the two. He looked first to Victor, then down to Jaime. He let out a low hmph in acknowledgment, then turned and pressed a few more keys, and the display went dim.

Victor placed a few pats on Jaime’s shoulder. “Just relax. As long as you don’t piss him off, you got nothin’ to worry about.” Jaime nodded as Vic left the room.

“So…” Batman said, his voice a low growl in his chest. “Jaime Reyes. That’s your name right?”

“Uh, y-yes,” Jaime stuttered, standing up straighter. This was actually happening right now. He was talking to Batman. Batman.

The caped figure crossed his arms and leaned up against the computer console. “I’ve heard a lot about you from Damian… he says you’re a valuable teammate. Which is impressive, considering he’s never even said that about me.”

Jaime couldn’t help but raise his eyebrows. “R… really? He said that? Uh, th-umm, thank you.”

The two stood in silence for a moment. Then, the Batman reached up, and slowly pulled the cowl off of his head. Jaime stood blinking at his face for a few seconds. Wow… Damian looks just like him.

“So… he’s really your kid, huh? That’s…”

The man smiled. “It’s big. I know,” he said, walking forward and placing a hand on Jaime’s shoulder. “I’m sure you have a lot of questions.”

“Yeah, I do. I mean…” Jaime rubbed his eyes and shook his head. He had so many questions, where on earth was he supposed to begin. So, after searching his whole brain, he came up with “… who was his mom?”

Bruce cocked a brow as he let out a small chuckle. “Well! Straight to the point, aren’t you?” Jaime rubbed his neck nervously, turning a bright shade of red. Bruce crossed his arms and sighed. “It… it happened about fourteen years ago. Her name was Talia…”

Damian’s flashlight illuminated the livingroom of Titans Tower just enough for the five in his group to navigate around the furniture without bumping into anything. He was certain that the power outage was Garfield’s doing (or rather, whatever the demon was inhabiting Garfield’s body), attempting to gain the upper hand and kill them all. It wouldn’t be expecting all five of them, but then… the one who took control of Mark Mardon a year ago was able to stand up to Superman… but then again, this wasn’t the same Superman. This Superman seemed older… more experienced. Perhaps he would be strong enough to handle Mardon, but Garfield is probably far stronger.

Then again, Damian thought, even I was able to land a solid hit on Logan. Perhaps he’s not quite as strong as I’ve been assuming…?

As this thought went through his mind, a flash of green caught the corner of his eye. On instinct, he reached for his sword and launched himself towards it… but before he had a chance to strike, he found himself enveloped in a familiar dark energy, suspended in the air.

“It’s alright, Damian,” Raven whispered, her hands raised to focus her magic around the boy. “It’s just us.”

Damian released his grip on his hilt as Raven lowered him to the ground. “I’m glad you’re okay. Have you three found anything yet?”

“You mean aside from claw marks up and down the halls?” Tara chimed in from beside Kori. “No. Guess he’s a little ahead of us.”

“Hold on. That doesn’t make any sense…” Dick scratched his head as he spoke, trying to make sense of their situation. “We started from the top and checked every single room. You guys did the same from the bottom, so…”

Everyone froze as the realization dawned on them. Slowly, Damian turned his eyes upward and shone his flashlight at the ceiling to spot an enormous mass of green flesh and fur.

Right now, Beast Boy was a brutal, mindless beast, controlled by an actual demon from actual Hell, capable of rending them all limb from limb. And at this very moment, he had the high ground.

“Titans…” Damian said through grit teeth, his focus locking onto the Changeling, “… Ready.”

Garfield roared out like thunder as he dropped to the ground, crushing the living room table beneath his weight. Starfire made the first move against him, her body whirling like a top as landed several consecutive blows to Beast Boy’s face. But after a moment, Gar managed to brace in anticipation of her move, and brought her to a halt with her leg pressed against his face. With a growl followed by one swift motion, he batted Kori across the room, and immediately launched himself towards Tara.

Markov had regained her composure, however, and quickly pulled a sizable rock through the nearby window, clocking the wolf-beast in the side of his head with it as they were all showered in broken glass. Garfield stumbled back as Tara swung her stone into his head again and again, her arms swinging wildly as she struggled to attack faster. As she brought her fists down, intent on rendering the Changeling unconscious, Garfield took hold of the stone, crushing it in his hand. Tara stumbled back, tripping over what remained of the table, and Garfield pulled his lips back over his teeth in a sneer.

Just as he raised his claw to strike, Jonathan made his move, delivering a punch into Garfield’s chest with such force that the air seemed to crack at the point of impact. Gar flew upwards, smashing into the ceiling before dropping back to the ground, dazed and clutching at his chest. Jonathan’s eyes began to glow red.

“C'mon, BB,” Jon pleaded, “it’s us! Fight it, man, you’ve got to–”

Before Jon could finish, Gar delivered a swift crack with his head to Jonathan’s nose. The young Superboy stumbled back, hands on his face before the wolf-man flipped around, smacking him away with his tail.

“Y'know, I think Fido’s had enough fun for one day,” Dick quipped as he, Barbara and Damian pulled out their ropes. “Let’s kennel this puppy.”

The three leapt into the air in an almost synchronized fashion, their lines soaring behind them like some bizarre ribbon show. They whirled all about Garfield, wrapping him up tightly before landing in front of him and pulling with all of their might, bringing the creature down to its knees and unable to move. Raven quickly moved into position, casting her magic on the monster and glowing with a brilliant purple aura.

“By the will of Azar, I command you,” the mage girl called out with authority, “leave quietly this flesh you have taken, servant of the Fallen Serpent! You are ban–”

Before Raven could complete her incantation, somehow the possessed Changeling found the strength to tear through the sturdy Bat-ropes, and with one swipe sent the girl crashing through the wall.

“RAVEN!!” Robin’s panicked voice tore through the room as he bolted in the direction which his friend had been sent flying, leaving his friends to continue combating the creature. There, on the other side of a large hole in the wall, Raven lay unconscious, covered in pieces of broken wall and piping, blood running down a sizable gash in her forehead.

As Damian cradled his best friend in his arms, he felt his eyes begin to sting. This was on him; he should have known not to leave Garfield unattended in the hall before. He should have investigated his condition sooner. If he had just done what needed to be done… if he had just protected her like he should have…

Damian gently set Raven down on the floor, and grasped his katana. He knew the source of the tears on his cheeks was not just from guilt. This was the rage he’d been suppressing since his little clash with Reyes. For the past fourteen years, he’d been taught to control his emotions. The only emotion he was ever permitted to express in any sense was his anger. But upon joining the Titans, he found himself pushing his anger down just like all the rest of his emotions. And he was sick of holding it back.

In an instant, Damian rocketed towards the beast, making one broad stroke before crashing right into Garfield’s chest in a shoulder-tackle.

The green wolf-beast went one direction. But his right arm, from the elbow down, went another. Between them was a spray of red liquid that covered Damian’s face. As the young Robin pulled himself off the floor, he heard Beast Boy screeching in agony, as a bright red light shot out of Superman’s eyes into the stump where his arm should have been. What have I done…?

April 17th, 2017. 1:34 PM.

“Damian…?”

Damian’s eyes slowly crept open as the familiar voice slid into his ears. He lifted his head up off of his crossed arms to see that Raven was finally coming to. Her eyes were weary and her hair was unkempt, but Damian didn’t care. He just silently thanked any god that was listening that she was still alive. He stood up quickly, and rushed to her side.

“It’s alright, Raven,” he began to reassure her as he took hold of her hand. “You’ve been out for four days. But everything has been taken care of.”

Raven smiled at her closest friend for a moment, taking the time to find comfort in his presence. But quickly she felt a new pain in the back of his mind.

“Damian…” Raven whispered, “… what’s wrong?”

Robin’s heart dropped. He was afraid of what was about to happen, but… he swore he would never lie to her.

“Garfield… was injured in the fight,” he stammered, trying to find the strength to own up to what he’d done. “… I… I cut his arm off.”

Raven’s eyes widened for a moment. This was… this was serious. She almost let out an exasperated “you did WHAT??”, but she could feel the tear in Damian’s heart grow as he told her what happened.

“It’s my fault…” Damian’s eyes stayed glued to the hand he held, as tears began to well up behind them. “I just… I lost control. I saw how bad you’d been hurt, and I…” with this, Damian had to squeeze his shut. “Oh God, I thought you were gone. I thought… I thought he…”

Raven placed her other hand onto the boy’s face. “Damian… I know. It’s going to get better.” She pulled the boy into her arms, and ran her fingers through his hair. “The pain won’t go away… but I promise you, it will get better.”

Damian tried to hold himself together. Fourteen years, he’d been taught to control his emotions. The only emotion he was ever permitted to express in any sense was his anger. Even when his father and butler insisted that he open up, he kept his heart shut tight. Even when his mother turned her back to him, he stayed strong. But now, after everything, he broke down. He just fell all to pieces in Raven’s arms; his walls of strength and resilience gave way, and he cried weakly, like the broken child he’d denied all these years. For the first time in his short life, Damian knew how it felt to truly need someone. He needed these Titans. He needed his father. But above all else, in this moment, he needed Raven. He needed her like the earth needed the rain. And as they sat there in the infirmary of Titans Tower, they silently made a promise to one another: no matter what the cost, they would do everything in their power to be there for the other. Because Raven knew, after everything that had happened, that she needed Damian just the same. She wept there with him, holding the boy as tight as her weary arms possibly could. Damian saved her from her past; now she needed to do the same for him.

Let’s get started! 1. i just got my second ear piercings like two days ago 2. i secretly enjoy most conspiracy theories 3. i bought an app like earlier this year with a gift card that i thought had enough money on it but apparently it didn't so apple emailed me like a month after and was like "oh yeah you technically didn't pay for this app so until you do you can't update your phone or any of your apps" but i'm too lazy to fix it so i'm like a criminal technically 4. i have a scar on my leg from when i was seven or eight and i fell into a pond and cut my leg on a rock but i remember just being upset because i got mud all over my new pants 5. i have asthma and i'm allergic to most animals and nuts. lucky me. 6. i cut my hair super short like two years ago and i've finally been growing it out for the last few months 7. a week or so ago i went to this thrift store and they had the second, third, and fourth seasons of homeland on dvd for half off their usual retail price so i bought them but i haven't seen season one and currently have no way to watch season one??? what was i thinking????? now damian lewis just stares judgmentally at me from the cases every time i walk by them without watching them 8. a couple years ago when i was sick and had a fever i went to the aforementioned thrift store and i saw this framed picture of a seagull standing alone on a beach and i didn't have enough money to buy it so i cried but then i came back to the thrift store like two weeks later and it was still there so i bought it and it's been on my wall ever since 9. i wanted to learn how to play guitar when i was like ten so my parents bought me a guitar and my uncle was going to teach me but he never had the time so i just never learned how to play the guitar and i still have it and every time i see it i feel guilty for never learning 10. the only time i've ever been asked out on a date was when i was six or seven and i went to this zoo camp and a boy there kept asking me out but i didn't like him so i hit him with my clipboard until he left me alone 11. here's a fact you probably learned just by reading this: i love oversharing and talking about myself (but i only ever do it online because no one else listens to me) i tag @merriellshelton @webgottrash @freyja-sonaan @mechanikill @buckcompton and any other mutuals or followers who want to do this because i'm so tired i can't remember anyone's urls

Well I get the idea, work it out in me head, the kinks, plot holes and the like. Though I tend to only write it down if it fills me up with energy or motivation.

I Love this. I validate them, simple as that. I understand their concerns then explain why they have no reason to worry.15. How do you deal with writer’s block?

Procastinate and/or work on another WIP or just another activity.16. How many drafts do you need until you’re satisfied with a project?

I have absolutely no clue. I’m still writing my first ever draft.

Well, I get a bottle of coke and go through the plot in me head or whatever i want to write.

Kit, because we’ve already done this.

Oh good lord... See that’s the thing, Motivation comes and goes in waves. I don’t always keep myself motivated, I just know that I’ll have to get my WIP done sooner or later so why not now?

Oh boy... let’s see there’s like... 5 currently? But I’m just working on like 2-3 of them. I dropped alot more in the past few weeks and decided to focus on what’s more important to me.

Bruce, Katie, Rafe and Keith tbh

Kallura and Brafe I think?

I politely decline to do so until I’m ready.

Find quotes, lots of it and find writers who write the same genre as you and take their advice, learn from their mistakes. Refuse to give up on your idea if it breathes life into you. Find out why is it you want to write.

42. How do you feel about love triangles?

Can be interesting if done correctly

43. What do you do if/when characters don’t follow the outline?

Say fuck it and go with it, I want to explore this new development and see where it goes.

44. How much research do you do?

Depends on the topic.

45. How much world building do you do?

I sort of make most of it up as I go a long but I do have some concrete guidelines and i’d say fairly much.

46. Do you reread your own stories?

Sometimes, when i’m in the mood for it or editing things.

Netflix or reading another book.

I think it was the Kej Leon and Henry Graves situation.

Keith or Bella easily... they just know how to have a good time among other reasons.
