The camera pans, the scene changes. The dashing protagonist smiles at the moon and whips out...
A bag of nuts? With a brand name clearly labelled?
Or perhaps the comic relief characters swarm the leads, talking enthusiastically about how amazing this stomach medicine is.
Or how about yoghurt being featured more often than would be expected.
Maybe there’s an awkward cut to actors in full costume walking out and expounding on how great a product is.
...was that a PIZZA HUT in the background?
Shout out to Legend of Shen Li - I don't know whether or not the ice pops were a product placement, but they should have been!
Also not a cdrama but shoutout to this product placement filled video on Douyin- truly impressive!
Write-ins, propaganda, and images are welcome!

When I started watching The Double, I was trying to pinpoint why it felt so familiar, both visually (utterly gorgeous) and the insane OTP chemistry and dynamic between them, well, it turns out it's helmed by the director of Go Princess Go and Oh My General, who brought his trusty fan wind machine and petals along the ride. Sure, he has a bigger budget now and is limited by more censorship restrictions but it's still his signature style.

Seriously, so many scenes feel like homage shots to Go Princess Go that I've started to rewatch it like Pavlov's dog.

The trusty fan machine never fails.

The extra and gorgeous male lead (with a fan) with a penchant for dramatic poses.

Romance among flower petals.

Tragic death among flower petals.

Heroine taking the lead in a dance with the male lead.

Female lead openly thirsting after the hero.

Me: The cultural emphasis on romance as the most important form of interpersonal relationship is damaging and false
Me the moment I start watching a TV show: They’re dating. And also those two are dating. And those three. And this one is dating both those two and they’re fine about it. In fact everyone in the whole show is part of a polycule

I am incredibly normal about stories where women disguise themselves as men to do something that women have been forbidden to do
my obsession with them says nothing personally about me as a person in any way once so ever

My favorite part of oh my general is that every beautiful woman falls in love with Ye Zhao, sending her husband(s) scrambling. It wouldn’t take much for Zhao Yujin to convince Hu Qing that crossdressing is the only option.
All 60 episodes are subbed on Youtube I am begging you all to watch this

If you ever want a rec for a Chinese historical drama, I'm not an expert but I have seen a lot of them.
My general all round recs are Empresses in the Palace (also known as the Legend of Zhen Huan) for classic palace drama, with a satisfying end.
I feel so spicy about this drama, its so good. Zhen Huan character of all time.
Ruyi's Royal Love in the Palace, which is probably my favourite I think? Zhou Xun, who plays Ruyi is astounding, very subtle and understated and emotive at the same time.
The Story of Ming Lan is so good, it's all about family and rising against circumstance. Ming Lan is a joy of a character, she's so clever and tough behind this delicate front, and she has such rage in her.
And Oh My General for being wildly queer while resolutely heterosexual in the weirdest ways.
What if a jock dated a theatre kid, but the jock was a female soldier who has been living as a man to lead an army, and the theatre kid was a spoiled imperial family member who has had nothing expected of him ever.
What if she was a goofball and he was a prissy bitch but then he falls in love with her because she's the only person whose ever looked at him and expected him to be something!

Huh, is something burning? Oh look, there's a black lump of unidentified charcoal in this pot, let me clean that for you...
Wait.
Food?
...
Are you sure?
Whether they add ludicrous amounts of spice, don't know that you should gut a fish before cooking it, or have unique tastebuds (cough*coffeeinstantnoodles*cough), these characters are not ones you'd ever accept a dinner invitation from. I hope that their friends, family, and significant others have stomach medicine ready and waiting...
*we don't know for certain if he's doing it on purpose or not, but I wouldn't eat his food
Propaganda, examples, and write-ins absolutely welcome!

Watching Oh My General and I recognized some wordplay I'd seen in Fourteenth Year of Chenghua. In FYC Tang Fan corrects Sui Zhou being called an outsider (外人 wàirén, lit: outside person) by calling him a word that commonly means wife (内人 nèirén, lit: inside person) and Sui Zhou complains until Tang Fan calls him husband instead.
In Oh My General Yujin is upset that Ye Zhao has her military advisor Huli write her divorce paper, because Yujin thinks of him as an outsider (wàirén). When Ye Zhao says Huli isn't a wàirén, Yujin sarcastically asks if then she thinks of Huli as her nèirén instead. It's a really clever line that expresses both Yujin's jealousy that leads him to see Huli as a rival, and his insecurity that Ye Zhao would see her spouse (it's Yujin, Yujin is actually her spouse!) as a wife rather than a husband.
Also it's funny that Yujin is getting jealous when Huli is only writing the divorce document because Yujin wants to get divorced.
