"a disaster beyond description" - the parallax view on parallax (& coast city's destruction)

i've often talked about the importance of pre-parallax retcon hal jordan, what a radical move his downfall had been for an art medium so uniquely focused on status quo and how much walking that back in post-2005 continuity damaged the character & his development. however, something i've become increasingly interested in lately is the outsider point of view on the magnitude of coast city's destruction and hal's descent into madness -- the reverberations of one of the darkest days in the dcu were far and wide for a good long while there but rarely acknowledged outside of nostalgia pieces nowadays and even more rarely understood as a thoroughly visceral, well-written, well-planned arc that intentionally portrayed the superhero world as largely unsympathetic to the trauma of one of their own but the average civilian as grappling with that loss nearly on the same scale that hal did.

to that effect, i thought i would show a highlights reel of this outsider POV and how much it adds to the weight of the pre-2005 story. while i've accepted some tie-ins to major events (ie zero hour 1994, final night 1996), this will feature titles entirely unrelated to green lantern presented in real life chronological order by publication date in order to showcase the impact that's compelled me so (that's no convergence: green lantern, no legends of the dcu #33-36, etc).

"every office, every home, every school and hospital is atomized. the west coast and its entire ecosystem is instantaneously shattered-- and more than seven million men, women and children that once called the coast city area home-- die."

to set the scene, the explosion that destroys coast city actually appears in superman 1987 #80 (cover date: aug 1993) as part of hank henshaw and mongul's plan.

the destruction had spread as far as santa barbara & the los padres national forest. getting closer to ground zero, hank henshaw also proceeds to resolutely take care of a handful of the sole survivors:

you all know the reading order here. past the return of superman and the events of emerald twilight, the first outsiders to have gotten the news are the darkstars

whose immediate course of action is to brand hal jordan a criminal (darkstars #23, cover date: aug 1994)

and as zero hour-induced temporal anomalies keep coming up, the darkstars start seriously considering further tampering with time in order to prevent "the creation of a power-mad monster" (darkstars #24, cover date: sept 1994).

it's a sentiment that the majority of hal's justice league colleagues share, as zero hour: crisis in time and the final night both tell us, but a more sympathetic view comes two years later in the spectre 1992 #47 (cover date: nov 1996)

and a more neutral one from waverider in superman: the doomsday wars #2 (cover date: dec 1998)

interestingly enough, more details of the in-universe perception of hal's actions comes from deadman: dead again

where we learn that "sources close to the JLA" have actually issued a press statement naming hal as wholly responsible for the green lantern corps massacre, with no hint that they've been equally forthcoming about the motive behind his actions (deadman: dead again #4, cover date: oct 2001)

the last pre-retcon word goes to superman: day of doom #3 (cover date: jan 2003), a sobering portrayal of the immense horror of coast city's annihilation and subsequently a look into the reality that had made hal snap:

post-retcon, nostalgia pieces like dcu: legacies #8 (feb 2011) and dc retroactive: superman - the 80s (oct 2011) both treat the mad-with-grief version of the story as the truth -- as does the 2015 convergence event --but outside of these few instances, the tour de force of storytelling that is this years-long arc has been cast aside in favor of an unnecessary retcon. as the zero hour: crisis in time 30th anniversary approaches, i'd say it's just the right time to remember that hal (unrepentant hal, power-hungry hal, hell-bent on making everything right hal) had had a perfectly proportional reaction to the tragedy he'd endured, if not outright a justified one.

'“Barbenheimer” is officially here, and the battle between the bomb and the bombshell is about to ignite the box office.

Greta Gerwig’s cotton candy-colored “Barbie,” starring Margot Robbie as the plastic, fantastic doll, is expected to generate a huge $95 million to $110 million from 4,200 North American theaters over the weekend. Given the omnipresence of “Barbie” (the marketing is practically inescapable, with enough memes and marketing tie-ins to last a lifetime), initial estimates are all over the place. Warner Bros. is projecting a more conservative $75 million to start, while rivals and exhibitors believe the PG-13 movie could make as much as $140 million between Friday and Sunday.

In any case, “Barbie” will claim the top spot over Christopher Nolan’s atomic bomb drama “Oppenheimer,” which is aiming to collect a solid $50 million from 3,600 cinemas through Sunday. Universal is backing the R-rated historical biopic, which cost $100 million.

“Oppenheimer” runs at three hours (“Barbie” clocks in at just under two), which may limit the screenings per day. However, Nolan’s epic will benefit from premium large format screens like Imax, which is dedicating its entire footprint to his film for three weeks.

Together, the seemingly different blockbusters with twin release dates are fueling the phenomenon known as “Barbenheimer.” AMC Theatres, the nation’s biggest cinema chain, reported that 40,000 people have already purchased tickets for double features of “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” on the same day — up 20,000 from last week.

The $145 million-budgeted “Barbie” stars too many A-listers to name, but we’ll give it a shot: Ryan Gosling, Issa Rae, Dua Lipa, Simu Liu, Helen Mirren, John Cena and Will Ferrell round out the cast of the fantasy comedy, which follows Barbie and Ken as they leave the comfort and familiarity of Barbie-Land on a quest for self-discovery in the real world.

“Oppenheimer,” adapted by Nolan from the Pulitzer Prize-winning book “American Prometheus,” is an equally star-studded character study about theoretical physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer. Cillian Murphy plays the man who led the development of the atomic bomb, alongside an ensemble of Robert Downey Jr., Matt Damon, Emily Blunt, Florence Pugh and Alden Ehrenreich.

The potent combination of “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer,” as well as last weekend’s champion “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One,” is expected to fuel one of the biggest box office weekends in ages. Summer season has otherwise produced a string of underperforming options, like “The Flash,” “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” and “Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken.”

Tom Cruise’s newest “Mission” looks to add $28 million to $30 million in its second weekend of release, a decline of roughly 50% from its debut. The seventh installment in Paramount and Skydance’s globe-trotting action franchise opened to $56 million in North America and $234 million globally. It cost $291 million before marketing, so Ethan Hunt’s latest death-defying adventure needs to remain a draw throughout the summer to justify that price tag.

Elsewhere, the unlikely box office hit “Sound of Freedom” is imminently crossing the $100 million mark, which will put the film among the top 16 highest grossing of the year. The low-budget, faith-based movie about child sex trafficking has generated a remarkable $85.7 million to date. That’s thanks mostly to the religious and conservative media groups that have rallied behind the film.

Paul Dergarabedian, a senior Comscore analyst, calls “Barbenheimer” a “movie marketers dream come true.” He adds that the craze is “creating a rising tide of interest that should also boost the fortunes of ‘MI7’ and ‘Sound of Freedom’ as moviegoers flood the multiplex in search of movies to catch on the big screen.”'

Love Actually (2003)

Love Actually has grown to become a bit of a modern-day Christmas staple. I can see why, but won’t be including it in my roster. With a whopping 10 different stories interwoven through its 136-minute running time, of course some of them hit. The film has its sweet moments… but are they worth sitting through all the clichés and groan-inducing, painfully predictable, been-there-done-that scenes which could’ve been left out?

Set during the five weeks leading to Christmas, the characters and stories featured include:

Rock and roll legend Billy Mack (Bill Nighy) promoting his (terrible) Christmas single at the behest of his longtime manager, Joe (Gregor Fisher).

Juliet (Keira Knightley) learning her husband's best friend, Mark (Andrew Lincoln), is in love with her days after her wedding.

Jamie (Colin Firth) who discovers his girlfriend (Sienna Guillory) is cheating on him with his brother. After exiling himself to his French cottage, he begins falling in love with his Portuguese housekeeper, Aurélia (Lúcia Moniz), despite the language barrier separating them.

Harry (Alan Rickman), who is comfortably married to Karen (Emma Thompson) but tempted by his new secretary, Mia (Heike Makatsch). He does nothing to dissuade her advances, risking everything in the process.

Karen’s brother, David (Hugh Grant), is the recently elected Prime Minister. He cannot help but notice Natalie (Marine McCuthcheon), a household staff member of 10 Downing Street. The attraction is mutual but the pressures of the office compel David to push her away.

Newly-widowed Daniel (Liam Neeson), who finds solace from his grief by helping his stepson, Sam (Thomas Sangster), win over the girl he’s fallen in love with, Joanna (Olivia Olson).

Sarah (Laura Linney), has loved her co-worker Karl (Rodrigo Santoro) for years. When she’s told the entire office knows how she feels, she finally begins to muster the courage to act upon them.

Fed up with all of his unsucessful attempts to woo women, Colin (Kris Marshall) decides - despite the protests of his best friend, Tony Abdul Salis) - to travel to America and use his British accent to pick up ladies.

John (Martin Freeman) and Judy (Joanna Page) are professional stand-ins for films in the middle of rehearsing a series of sex scenes. Delighted to find someone they can simply talk to during the long, boring stretches in which they stand around naked - without it feeling awkward - a genuine attraction develops.

The stories are tied together with knots of varying looseness. Colin is a waiter at Juliet and Peter’s wedding. On the way to the airport, Daniel and his son bump into Rufus (Rowan Atkinson), an obsessive jewellery salesman whom Harry approaches in a moment of weakness. Some people work together, or live next to each other but there isn’t much connective tissue except the overarching theme of romance and the upcoming Christmas holiday. The point is, no one in this whopper feels essential, which makes the bad stories feel worse. Colin and his quest to get laid is so awful you’re a little embarrassed for everyone involved. I kept waiting for it to spring a twist upon us but no, it plays out exactly like some fantasy a 14-year-old Brit would dream up. Nearly as terrible is the tale of Juliet, Mark and Peter (Chiwetel Ejiofor). I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again. If you've been harbouring romantic feelings for years, haven’t told the person how you feel and you just watch from the sidelines, lubricating yourself with your own tears at night, you’re not sweet. You’re a creep. It’s extra awkward that Peter plays no part in this story.

Most of the other tales are charming. Daniel working through his own grief by teaching his son about life is a highlight, as are the stories featuring Colin Firth and Hugh Grant. They both have that everyman kind of charm which makes you cheer for them and have terrific chemistry with their respective love interests. I’ll even add Bill Nighy’s segment on the “Nice List”. The rest are ok but severely hampered by the number of people and plot lines we’re supposed to keep track of. Sometimes, actors and actresses are gone for so long it takes you a moment to remember what role they play in this “epic”. When a link between the stories is revealed, you’re unsure if this is new information or something you just forgot about. There’s simply too much going on. No one gets properly fleshed, leaving your mind to fill in the gaps. Luckily for you, familiarity endears you to these people because you’ve seen these scenarios a thousand times before.

As “The Ultimate Romantic Comedy”, Love Actually leaves much to be desired. The ultimate rom-com should be universal. It should contain at least one character that isn’t young, white and attractive in a major role. How about a same-sex relationship too? Maybe that was too much to ask in 2003. What should’ve been apparent - even back then - was how overstuffed with clichés this ordeal is. Every sweet love story and appealing actor is eventually shoved aside to make room for another you like much less… making this a constant back-and-forth between satisfaction and disappointment. No One Used To Care About The Vice Presidency. Here's How (And Why) That's Changed.

The Second-In-Command Position Used To Be "Insignificant" But Can't Be Ignored Today

The vice presidency used to look dramatically different than it does today. Largely, this is because of how little definition the Founding Fathers gave to the role in the first place. “The framers of the Constitution thought very little of the vice presidency,” says Jared Cohen, author of The Accidental Presidents. “They thought even less about succession. And I think that's fascinating because people didn't live that long back then, and succession should have been a fundamental feature of how they were thinking about democracy.”

Officially, the Constitution assigned the vice president only two jobs. The first was serving as presiding officer of the Senate, where the VP has the power to cast tie-breaking votes. The second was to assume the president’s duties in the event of disability, death, or resignation. In fact, vice presidents originally had so few formal responsibilities that a member of the first U.S. Congress thought they should be compensated on a per diem basis. As a result, most early vice presidents found themselves at loose ends.

The country’s first vice president, John Adams, had a view of the role’s limits from the very birth of the republic. Referring to himself as “a mere Doge of Venice,” Adams called the position “the most insignificant office that ever the invention of man contrived.” It wasn’t until the 20th century that the role began to turn into something more.

Warren Harding was the first president to invite his vice, Calvin Coolidge, to attend Cabinet meetings; Franklin Delano Roosevelt continued the practice with all three of his vice presidents. Nonetheless, Roosevelt’s last VP, Harry Truman, felt completely unprepared to assume the presidency when FDR died. Truman had been kept so ignorant of critical policy issues that he was only informed about the Manhattan Project upon taking the chief executive office.

“In Truman's 82 days as vice president, he didn't get a single intelligence briefing,” Cohen tells American Experience. “He'd only met FDR twice. He never stepped foot in the map room where the war was being planned. He was not briefed on the atomic bomb. He was completely out of the loop.” Once himself President, however, Truman set out to rectify the role he’d stepped into. He had Congress add the vice president to the National Security Council, while also elevating the office with a higher salary.

Having witnessed Truman’s difficulties, next-in-line Dwight Eisenhower also wanted to make sure his potential successor was intimately involved in the ins and outs of domestic and foreign policy. Vice President Richard Nixon was invited to attend briefings alongside President Eisenhower, met with dozens of foreign leaders on his behalf, and worked on important Civil Rights legislation.

But the most significant shift in vice presidential status came when Walter Mondale assumed the office. President Jimmy Carter treated his VP as a full partner, giving him unprecedented equal access to classified materials and meeting sometimes for hours daily to discuss important developments. Mondale was also given symbolic evidence of the role’s increased importance: a permanent office in the White House, for the first time ever.

The Carter-Mondale model became a template for how future presidents and vice presidents worked together going forward. And while every governing partnership is different, vice presidents in the modern era have often served as confidants, advisors, and diplomats of policy—finally transforming the vice presidency into an office of greater stature.
