it really says alot about oculus' pcvr drivers when just trying to set up and get into the vr alone is more of a workout than actually playing vr

Hey gang! Are you looking into getting an Oculus headset? Want money to buy your first games?

You’re in luck! Oculus offers this thing where you can refer your friends to get Oculus, and we BOTH get $30 in store credit! Now, I don’t have any friends—at least none with a headset?—so I figured I’d throw the link out to anyone interested <3

Anyway! To make this post more useful I will also give some recommendations:

Kingspray Graffiti/Vermillion. I have both, and if you find my review on Oculus you can follow a link for 25% off. They’re both painting games, one being of a more Bob Ross-style and the other being—illegal irl, I think?

Apex Construct! It’s a game where you shoot robots. I got it on sale and was pleasantly surprised to find Kellen Goff voicing one of the characters. Check it out!

Speaking of Kellen Goff: FNaF Help Wanted. Kind of what I want the $30 for, ngl. Self-explanatory, since it’s FNaF; it’s kind of all the games in one, but you’re actually there. (Highly recommend Markiplier’s playthrough if you want to check it out!)

Job Simulator, it’s fun and silly. You get to play through simulations of “jobs” from the understanding of robots who haven’t seen humans in a while. Also Vacation Simulator, which has handtracking. (Markiplier has also played this one.)

Resident Evil! This game is why I got my headset in the first place, and since then I just haven’t spent $40 on it. It’s a remake of the fourth game and Leon is still hot. (Callmekevin introduced me to it!)

BEAT SABER. It’s one of those VR games everyone knows about—and surprisingly, a great workout! But, if you don’t want to spent $30 (winkwink) just yet, try Moon Rider in the browser. (Jacksepticeye has played Beat Saber!)

Vader Immortal; another one I got on sale, my only complaint is it’s kind of short, but it made me feel important and it was crazy fun! There’s also Tales From the Galaxy’s Edge, but you don’t really get to play with lightsabers and it’s more of a Disney-ride kind of feel than a Star Wars movie. (Callmekevin has played Tales; IAmCrusty has played Vader Immortal!)

There are probably more, but that’s what I can think of now! Have fun <3

So Meta Verse is a thing

It all started fall 2021 in my advertising class.  My professor found the latest announcement from Facebook and it was the name change along with the announcement for their very own virtual reality world that was somewhat like VR chat.  For the lesson we reviewed the trailer and had some criticisms of it, aside from Mark Zuckerberg being the result of a sim going turbo.  We all collectively decided that the name change was weird, and it didn’t help that there were rumors going around that meta meant death in Hebrew along with the new logo having dark implications.  Clearly this was not good for PR but ultimately we all decided to take the wait and see approach.  Now the new Facebook VR app is out, there are demos and videos of it on YouTube and I am not impressed.

Visually it looks like a pre-alpha demo for an asset flip on steam.  The backgrounds are flat like a shovel wear PS2 game and we can just find a better version of this on VR chat.  It is also meant to be used for communication less like a game lobby and more like a zoom call.  Thinking about it, I would much rather use zoom than my VR headset for business and school.  Oh and there is a lot of crypto and NFT stuff going into meta verse so I’d recommend a hard pass.

Then I saw the thing that inspired this article.  Walmart made their own VR shopping app that also has poor graphics but is also the bleakest image of the future I’ve seen presented by a corporation.  It is set up like each level of a massive grey warehouse is a section of the store and the only company you have is a holographic cashier Siri.  It feels like it would’ve been a joke off of Futurama, but even Mom wouldn’t make this.  This feels like a dystopian shopping mall but completely abandoned yet somehow I still feel like I’m being watched.  It’s eerie and way too quiet, and the cashier Siri somehow feels very uncanny.  The video makes it clear that this is a part of Walmart Pickup, but the draw of pickup is convenience.  This VR app is already losing to regular pick up apps found on phones.  The only thing this app could do is show you what more expensive products look like along with their size.  Although, Amazon already has that if you were to buy furniture from them in the phone app.  

Not too long ago I was on this site praising the immersion of VR with my Oculus quest.  Now all this Meta stuff is being pushed, and well to be honest, I don’t see VR going beyond games and chat rooms.  Even then, there better be something else in that chat room.  So far Meta Verse and things like the Walmart app already has a better and easier equivalent on smartphones.  It seems as though the people working on these projects agree.  There are reports of Facebook developers being absolutely baffled by Zuckerberg's insistence on this meta thing, and also being forced to enjoy it for their jobs.  If this is the attitude of the developers, I don’t see this going very far at all.
